A technique is described for preparing finegrained lead telluride by ultrasonic agitation of a solidifying melt. Material prepared by this technique is dense and chemically homogeneous. N-type PbTe, containing 0.03 mole pct PbIz, has been made and its thermoelecCric Properties have been measured as a function of temperature. For comparison, the properties of similarly doped PbTe made by cold pressing and sintering, and by extrusion, have also been measured. The ultrasonically prepared material compares favorably with the others in its thermoelectric-efficiency factor. Comparison of compressive-flow curves for the three kinds of PbTe show that the ulhasonically prepared material has much superior ductility. The cleavage strength of the ultrasonic material is related to the grain size, D, by the Petch relation:Extrapolation to infinite grain diameter yields a fracture strength of 5000 psi for single-crystal PbTe. WHEN metals and semiconductors solidify in a mold they normally assume one of three cast structures illustrated in Fig. 1.' Solidification in a casting starts at the mold walls where a large number of fine crystals of random orientation can be nucleated to form the chill zone. Because of the anisot-ropy of the growth rate, those crystals whose direction of maximum linear growth is parallel to that of the heat flow grow faster and crowd out the crystals of less favorable orientation. A second zone, having a preferred orientation, called the columnar zone, thus forms adjacent to the chill zone. The speed of growth of the columnar grains will depend, in the case of limited undercooling of the melt, on the rate at which heat can be abstracted. The columnar zone can extend to the center of the casting, Fig. l(a), but it is frequently followed, in solid-solution alloys, by another zone of equiaxed randomly oriented grains in the central portion of the casting, Fig. l(b). The equiaxed structure in Fig. l(c) represents the completely grain-refined case where the equiaxed grain size is small. The third type of structure is the most desirable because it imparts a somewhat higher strength for all except high-temperature applications, it reduces segregation of the doping constituent, and it reduces the possibility of hot tearing (the separation of grains due to the melting of a low-melting point constituent in the grain boundaries). In order to obtain fine-grained castings, the nu-cleation frequency must be increased and grain growth must be restricted. Various techniques have been employed for obtaining this end, namely: rapid cooling, vibration, and inoculation of the melt. The success of these techniques depends upon the characteristics of the metal species and on factors controlled by heat transfer through the crucible walls. Recent studies2" have shown that the application of ultrasonic energy to the solidifying ingot is an extremely powerful tool in the improvement of the crystalline structure of metallic castings. Both the mechanical properties and homogeneity of the ingots are improved. Ultrasonic oscillations may affect the crystallization process by 1) permitting subcritical nuclei to agglomerate and thus form nuclei of sufficient size to cause crystallization, 2) changing the state of surface adsorption of various catalysts found in the liquid melt, 3) breaking pieces of solid from the solidified surface near the supercooled region thereby increasing the number of possible nuclei, 4) causing temperature fluctuations to occur in certain parts of the melt thereby increasing the supercooling at specific points in the liquid, and 5) decreasing the critical nucleus size by increasing the pressure at specific points in the melt.' The apparent rates of decarburization of liquid alloys of Fe-C, Fe-C-S, Ni-C, and Co-C systems and the rate of oxidation of solid graphite with pure carbon dioxide gas and with gas mixtures of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide have been measured in the temperature range of 1000° to 1600°C. The cotnposition of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide gas at the reaction surface has been measured by oxygen concentration cells with the ZrO,-CaO solid electrolyte. 1) The apparent rates of the carbon removal are essentially the same for all the cases of solid graphite, Fe-C, Fe-C-S, Ni-C, and Co-C systems under the same experimental conditions. 2) The apparent rates are independent of the carbon content in the high carbon concentration range but very much affected by the flow rate and the gas composition of the CO-CO2 reactant gas mixture. The ratio of the gas consumed by the reaction to the total quantity of the supplied gas is very large under the present experi~nental conditions. 3) There is a concentration gradient of' carbon dioxide in the vicinity of the reaction surface and the content of CO, becomes extremely small at the reaction surface. 4) A large time fluc-tuation of the gas composition was observed. This jluctuation implies the presence of unstable flow in the gas phase in the vicinity of the reaction surface. THE decarburization of molten steel by an oxidizing gas or by slag may be one of the most important chemical reactions in steelmaking processes. Nevertheless, the kinetics of this heterogeneous chemical reaction do not seem to be well-solved even with the previous studies. Although the conditions for the reaction in steelmaking processes are quite different from those in the laboratory scale, some critical experiments may give information on the mechanism of the decarburization. From the previous work,'-' it is known that the rate of the decarburization is independent of the carbon content in liquid iron with more than about 0.2 wt pct C when the oxidizing gases are supplied to the surface of liquid Fe-C alloys on a laboratory scale. Two rate-controlling steps have been proposed for the decarburization of liquid iron with the high carbon content: one is the surface reaction control proposed by Swisher and Turkdogan;' the other is that the rate is controlled by the gaseous diffusion through the gaseous stagnant layer. proposed by Baker. Warner, and Jenkins.7 and also by .Ito and Sano.2 In the present study, some experiments have been carried out for the evaluation of these rate-controlling steps in the decarburization of liquid iron with high carbon content. The apparent rate of decarburization of liquid iron has been compared with the rates of carbon removal of liquid Ni-C, Co-C, and solid graphite under the same experimental conditions. The composition of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide gas at the reaction surface has been measured by oxygen concentration cells. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Fig. 1 shows the schematic diagram of the reaction chamber. Solid graphite and liquid metals were contained in an alumina or magnesia crucible of 32 mm ID and 35 mm in height. The samples were heated by high-frequency induction and the temperature was measured by the calibrated optical pyrometer. The temperature was held constant to within 10°C. The re-actant gases were supplied to the surface of the samples through the quartz tube of 8.0 mm ID. The distance from the end of the quartz tube to the surface was 20 mm. The block of high-purity graphite was cut and shaped to the inner profile of the crucible. The height of the shaped graphite was 18 mm, which corresponded to the depth of the liquid iron of 100 g. About 100 g of Fe-C alloy (4.20 to 4.40 pct C), Ni-C alloy (1.84 pct C), Co-C alloy (1.85 pct C), and Fe-C-s alloy (4.35 pct c, 0.5 or 1.0 pct S) were melted in the crucible. The reactant gases were pure CO, and gas mixtures of CO-CO,: the flow rates were controlled by capillary flowmeters with bleeders.

Methods for analyzing flooding or cycling projects by means of two-dimensional flow calculations are presented in the literature. The use of these methods allows the determination of optimum operating conditions for such projects and provides information on pattern efficiencies, relative flow rates, pressure distributions and floodout histories. The accuracy of such analyses depends on the basic reservoir data employed, especially the absolute permeability distribution in the reservoir; however, absolute permeability data normally are determined from well flow tests and/or core measurements and are so limited in quantity and quality that they do not adequately describe the reservoir flow properties. A calculation procedure is presented for determining the areal permeability distribution in the reservoir. Use of the procedure allows verification of the basic reservoir data through the matching of past reservoir conditions, thereby providing proper data for reliable predictions of future operations. The calculation procedure is a numerical technique based on a mathematical model of the reservoir and is designed for solution by means of an electronic digital computer. Results from field application of this procedure are presented. Permeability distributions from measured data are compared to those calculated to indicate the need for the analysis. Comparisons of field-measured and calculated pressure distributions are given to establish the validity of the calculation procedure. The conclusions of this paper are (I) use of the calculation provides data that allow a match of past reservoir conditions and thus reliable prediction of future operations; and (2) the procedure should, where applicable, be used to provide adequate reservoir data for use in two-dimensional flow calculations and related reservoir analyses. INTRODUCTION One means of providing more precise engineering control over reservoir operations during all stages of depletion is to develop some type of model to simulate the reservoir, using information developed from the behavior of the prototype to predict the performance of the actual reservoir. The use of mathematical rather than physical models for this purpose has been gaining in importance recently because of the application and availability of electronic computers. Mathematical models avoid instrumentation difficulties and allow easier handling of large-scale problems. At present, analyses employing two-dimensional models are common, and thought is being given to the use of models in three dimensions. The use of multi-dimensional models is necessary to show not only what is occurring in the reservoir, but also where in the reservoir the phenomena of interest are taking place. Methods for analyzing flooding or cycling projects by means of two-dimensional numerical models are presented in the literature. The use of these methods allows the determination of optimum operating conditions for such projects and provides information on pattern efficiencies, relative flow rates, pressure distributions and floodout histories. The applicability of numerical models and the results of using such analyses have been presented through field examples. The references indicated here discuss fully the data necessary to build the mathematical reservoir model and the way the model is used to study or predict the future performance of the reservoir. The accuracy of the analysis of such projects depends on the basic reservoir data employed in the construction of. the model. In order to be sure the model represents the reservoir, it must be used to match some known set of reservoir conditions, i.e., to match past reservoir performance. The accuracy of the model is directly dependent upon the absolute permeability distribution in the reservoir; however, absolute permeability data are normally determined from well flow tests and/or core measurements, and are so limited in quantity and quality that they do not adequately describe the reservoir flow properties. There is always the need for better data and for verification of existing data. The purpose of this paper is to show the use of the mathematical model to match past performance in flooding or cycling projects, the use of numerical techniques to adjust the basic absolute permeability data if necessary so that a match is obtained, and in this way to generate the effective areal permeability distribution of the reservoir. A review of the basic concepts of the numerical model will be given, followed by a discussion of the data-adjusting technique for matching past performance. TWO field examples will be cited to show

A cyclic method for processing manganese ores using sodium sulphate as the basic reagent is described. Sodium sulphate is electrolyzed in a diaphragm cell to give an anolyte-containing agentisdescribed.Sodiumsulphuric acid and a catholyte-containing iselectrolyzedincaustic soda, a part of which is carbonated in a cyclic manner to form soda ash. The reduced ore is leached with the anolyte to dissolve the manganese and the impurities are precipitated by addition of catholyte. Manganese in the pregnant todissolvethemanganeseandtheimpuritiessolution is precipitated as synthetic rhodochrosite with a carbonated catholyte, and sodium sulphate is regenerated. Calcining the manganese carbonate gives a high grade product and the carbon dioxide is returned to the carbonation step. The results of laboratory tests using cells equipped with synthetic-fiber diaphragms and permselective membranes, which permit transfer of anions or cations during electrolysis, are described. A METHOD which has been considered for pro-cessing manganese ores under emergency conditions to recover a product suitable for smelting to ferromanganese involves reductive roasting of the ore for leaching with dilute sulphuric acid followed by precipitation of the manganese from the purified pregnant solution with sodium carbonate. Although the process is operable and involves no novel or untried steps, it is noncyclic in regard to reagents. Research seemed warranted to determine if a cyclic process could be developed by electrolyzing the sodium sulphate formed during precipitation of the manganese with soda ash to regenerate sulphuric acid and sodium hydroxide. Reduced ore would be leached with acid anolyte to dissolve the manganese. The iron, alumina, and other dissolved impurities would be precipitated with the caustic catholyte, and the manganese in the purified pregnant solution would be precipitated as artificial rhodochrosite with carbonated catholyte to regenerate simultaneously sodium sulphate for electrolysis. Waste boiler gas and CO, from calcining the manganese precipitate would be recycled for carbonation of the caustic catholyte. There is a surprising lack of data in the technical literature on diaphragm electrolysis of sodium sulphate. One of the more comprehensive papers, by Atwell and Fuwa, describes the problem involved in electrolyzing byproduct sodium sulphate from the viscose process with particular regard to the design and operation of asbestos diaphragm cells. Frisk' also investigated electrolysis of sodium sulphate from viscose-spinning baths to recover caustic soda and sulphuric acid. The objective in these investigations was to produce, by electrolysis and evaporation, a concentrated caustic-soda solution and a sulphuric-acid solution low in sodium sulphate. Because of these requirements, the process was not too attractive despite a favorable yield of caustic and acid with a reasonable power consumption. Because strong acid and base are not required for processing manganese ores and nonelectrolyzed sodium sulphate is not objectionable in either reagent, the present problem was somewhat simpler than that of these investigators. The purpose of this report is to summarize briefly the results of laboratory electrolysis of commercial sodium sulphate in diaphragm cells of different types and the application of the acid and caustic for processing manganese ores in a cyclic manner. Electrolysis in Permeable Diaphragm Cells The principal problem in electrolyzing sodium sulphate in a permeable diaphragm cell is to prevent mixing of the acid and base formed in the anode and cathode compartments. It is not enough to separate the anolyte and catholyte by a single diaphragm. A three-compartment cell in which the sodium-sulphate solution is fed to the center compartment and flows through the permeable diaphragms to the anode and cathode compartments is more efficient electrically. Diaphragms should be porous enough to allow flow of solution to outer compartments but tight enough to prevent gross mixing of the anolyte and catholyte. In addition to being resistant to acid and alkali, the diaphragms should offer minimum resistance to the flow of current. It is also important that the electrolyte contain a high concentration of sodium sulphate to furnish an abundance of sodium and sulphate ions and thereby decrease the current carried by hydrogen and hydroxyl ions. A practical limitation of sodium-sulphate concentration is imposed by the decreased solubility of sodium sulphate with decreasing temperature. At 20°C, a concentration of 200 g per liter sodium sulphate can be maintained. Little is gained in conductivity by using a concentration greater than 200 g per liter. WHEN bronze is melted in open-flame furnaces a considerable amount of slag is formed during the melting operation. This slag maybe incidental to the melting practice or it may be formed intentionally by slag-forming constituents added to the furnace charge to provide a covering for the melted metal. When this slag is removed from the furnace, it contains, in addition to the free metal carried with it by the skimming operation, a considerable amount of metal as oxide either combined or mechanically mixed with it. By the usual crushing and washing methods this metallic oxide generally goes to the tailings pile, so diluted by other foundry waste that its recovery is economically impossible. If this furnace slag is not mixed with other foundry waste, practically all of the metal oxide as well as the free metal may be recovered by some form of smelting operation. The first side of the problem to be considered is the amount of slag produced. It may not be true that the majority of foundries have no record of the amount of slag made, but it is certainly true that a very great many either have no record or pay little attention to it. Usually the collection of furnace slag for one normal week's run will be sufficient to determine the advisability of its being handled in a different manner from the crushing and concentrating generally employed. If a large representative sample of the accumulation is crushed and concentrated and the recovery compared with the results of a careful assay, it will be found that a large percentage of the total metal content was lost in the washing process. The percentage of loss will be greater than the metallic oxide content, as some free metal in extremely fine particles always is carried away in grains of slag. From such a comparison, it may be determined whether or not the slag should be melted, sold or treated as before. An example of an actual test of this kind is given below. In a foundry melting 50,000 to 80,000 lb. of bronze per day, a week's accumulation of furnace slag and ladle skimmings amounted to 16,500 lb.-over three times as much as the foundry superintendent estimated before the accumulation was made. Two tons of this material was taken as representative of the lot. This was ground through a thoroughly cleaned ball-mill and concentrated over a Wilfley table. The

Although the economic importance of recovering copper by leaching of mine work dumps from open-pit operations has been realized for some time, serious attempts to understand and to improve such operations through scientifi research has been made only in recent years. This progress report covers the results of chemical, physical, and biological studies pertaining to the dump-leaching process and discusses salient features and parameters that may be helpful in improving such operations. The dump leaching of low-grade copper ores, as an integral part of the open-pit mining operations in the Southwest, has been practiced for the last 50 years and is increasing in importance as one of the major sources of copper. The recent acceleration in dump leaching can be attributed to: (1) the greater tonnages of low-grade ores mined and dumped at newer mines as well as resulting from increased stripping ratios at the older mines, (2) the relatively small investment required for dump leaching facilities per pound of copper recovered contrasted with expansion of milling facilities to recover equal amounts of the metal by raising tonnage throughout, (3) low labor requirements needed for leaching, and (4) the simple and continuous nature of the process needing little close supervision of trained operators. In the past, the mining companies have not worried about efficiency in dump leaching but have been satisfied with whatever metal recoveries could be made without much effort. However, because of the huge amounts of metal accumulating in the low-grade waste dumps, compared to the relatively small amount recovered annually, an operator today cannot leave dump leaching to chance. What appears to be a simple, empirical process is actually a very complex one involving a large number of critical factors that encompass Several Scientific disciplines, such as physics, chemistry, geology, biology, and hydrology. Two equations are compared for calculating imbibi-tion rates of water into porous media. A linear relation was found to apply when the square of the volume of water imbibed was plotted against time for water imbibing in natural rock materials. The effect of adsorbed organic materials on surface wettability was determined from measurements of rate of imbibition, water saturation and water permeability. INTRODUCTION An understanding of the mechanisms by which water displaces oil from porous media requires an understanding of the role of capillary forces in the displacement process. The capillary forces are determined by properties of the water-oil-solid surfaces. Consequently, some measure of the surface properties of reservoir rocks is necessary if displacement behavior in oil reservoirs is to be predicted from laboratory measurements. Several experimental procedures have been proposed to assign quantitative wettability indexes to reservoir rock surfaces. The most recent of these proposals are those of Bobek, Mattox and Denekas' and Amott.' These indexes are designed to show a continuous variation from the preferential oil-wet to the preferential water-wet systems. They require measuring some property of the rock which is a function of surface wettability. The quantities are measured on unaltered core material and compared with values obtained for known oil-wet and water-wet extremes on the same material. These methods are useful but are semi-empirical in nature. They have the disadvantage that the measured quantities may be functions of other variables in addition to surface wettability. Some understanding of the behavior of water-oil-rock systems may be obtained from studies of the simpler water-air-rock systems. Surfaces of a given wettability are more easily maintained for the latter. Also, certain approximations can be made for the flow of water and air which are not justified for water-oil flow. The theoretical and experimental work discussed in this paper is part of a study of the role of capillarity in the dynamic displacement of air by water. The expec- tation is that observations for the water-air system will lead to generalizations which are applicable to water-oil systems. THEORY Imbibition is defined as that process by which one fluid displaces another from a porous medium as a result of capillary forces only. Differential equations have been derived to describe the displacement of oil by water during imbibition, but these equations have not been solved.".' With certain assumptions, however, solutions are possible for water-air imbibition.

ThE country rock of the Mavrovouni mine of the Cyprus Mines Corp. is hydro-thern~ally altered, disintegrated pillow lava, with very little tensile strength ("short" ground). In places, especially when wet, it is heavy ground, though not extremely heavy except where movement has been caused by underlying or nearby stoping operations. Damage by caving from roof or sides of galleries is not sudden but progressively faster when the size of the cave increases as a result of the fall of small pieces. CeMent and Concrete Linings During early operations, galleries in the country rock were supported by customary mine-timbering methods. Available timber, howcver, was of poor quality and of relatively high price, and replacements were frequent and expensive. Furthermore, the massive sulphide ore bodies required large volumes of fresh air for ventilation and cooling, and it was therefore desirable to provide smooth-lined galleries with low resistance for the introduction of air to the ore bodies. It was also desirable to eliminate hazards of fire in shafts and underground workings insofar as this would be practical. Cement and concrete were relatively cheap, and plans for using these in support of shafts, underground galleries, raises, and chutes, were developed steadily. Circular shafts with diameters ranging from 10 to 15 ft were adopted for all permanent shafts and airways. In places these were lined with concrete poured behind sectional pressed-steel forms especially constructed for this purpose. In other places, they were lined with precast-concrete blocks. It was found that such precast concrete of good quality could be produced on mass production scale and delivered at the mine from most favorable point of manufacture, at a cost of about 25 cents per cubic foot of concrete. This refers to prewar costs. As the use of concrete blocks in circular lined galleries was developed, it was found that there were very great advantages in the reduction of air resistance as compared with customary timber supports. After best methods had been developed, it was found that breakage and replacements were extraordinarily low, averaging only about 11\2 pct per year during a period of about 15 years. Furthermore, it has been possible to reclaim for re-use a very large percentage of the concrete blocks from abandoned galleries. During the history of the operations precast-concrete blocks have been used for lining shafts, raises, ore chutes, galleries, and shaft stations, ranging from 3 to 16 ft id. The thickness of lining has varied from 5 to 10 in.; with 12 in. thickness in a few cases. Junctions of two galleries at angles ranging from about 30 to 60° are usually made of poured concrete behind sectional forms, or of a combination of poured concretc and precast blocks. Pondering the action of a ball mill employed to carry on comminution from the product of fine crushing to the point where flotation, cyanidation or other concentrating methods are applicable, one wonders where this machine had its origin. When Henry Wadsworth Longfellow reiterated the observation of that older poet Von Logau, and wrote "Tho' the mills of God grind slowly, yet they grind exceeding small," he probably visualized the type of mill that was employed in medieval times for the production of flour, and can therefore not be considered as having gained admittance to the fraternity of millmen, on behalf of either poet. He does, however, make it quite clear that the efficiency of even these Mills of Destiny was low, and to that extent voices a characteristic of fine-grinding equipment that has been the bugbear of all metallurgical engineers. Principle of Ball Mill The principle of the ball mill probably is traceable to the action along the coast line of oceans or lakes, or in the mountain streams. Wave action on rocks and pebbles, close to the shore line, gives the potential energy to the grinding media, which, in their rolling and tossing, break down the sands, and the resultant "pulp" carried out from the shore is classified and settles out in sizes ranging downward to extremely he mesh. Surely, these are the real mills of God. If we allow our minds to dwell on the total tonnage that has been handled in this way, adding to the sands and clays at present in existence those enormous tonnages of metamorphosed sedimentaries we sense the vast quantity of rock that has been so reduced. Is it not likely, therefore, that the answer to the beginnings of pebble milling, and eventually ball milling, came through the perception of this natural mill by one of our engineering forebears? Methods of Grinding The relatively low return of mechanical input to a ball mill, in terms of useful work accomplished, has always intrigued me immensely. The potential energy absorbed by a ball raised to a high point in its path is apparently released with a very small return in useful work. Is the ball mill the most desirable means of he grinding, or is there some other method through which we can recover a reasonable amount of the energy input in terms of useful work? Some years ago, on his retirement, H. W. Hardinge was questioned as to his thoughts on the trend of fine-grinding equipment. As I recall, his prophecy at that time was that the most likely field for improvement in grinding media would be toward a charge of flat disks with some mechanical scheme to cause them to slide over each other. Undoubtedly, Mr. Hardinge went through the usual experience of the muller and bucking board, the customary introduction of the budding millman to his calling. Is it not likely, therefore, that the answer to the beginnings of pebble milling, and eventually ball milling, came through the perception of this natural mill by one of our engineering forebears? Methods of Grinding The relatively low return of mechanical input to a ball mill, in terms of useful work accomplished, has always intrigued me immensely. The potential energy absorbed by a ball raised to a high point in its path is apparently released with a very small return in useful work. Is the ball mill the most desirable means of he grinding, or is there some other method through which we can recover a reasonable amount of the energy input in terms of useful work? Some years ago, on his retirement, H. W. Hardinge was questioned as to his thoughts on the trend of fine-grinding equipment. As I recall, his prophecy at that time was that the most likely field for improvement in grinding media would be toward a charge of flat disks with some mechanical scheme to cause them to slide over each other. Undoubtedly, Mr. Hardinge went through the usual experience of the muller and bucking board, the customary introduction of the budding millman to his calling. The melting and casting of any commercial metal depends upon the success with which the problems attendant to the handling of the specific metal are overcome. Common difficulties encountered in the handling of commercial metals are tendencies to burn or oxidize excessively, low fluidity, entrapment of dross, hot cracking, cold embrittlement, cold shuts, and un-soundness caused by gas evolution. Beryllium is not only subject to these same difficulties but is generally more sensitive to them than are the more common metals, thus necessitating more exact founding precautions. Characteristics of Beryllium Certain characteristics of beryllium which make it particularly difficult to handle in the plant or laboratory are as follows: 1. The melting point of beryllium is about 2400°F and pouring temperatures vary from 2600 to 2900°F, depending upon the degree of fluidity required. The extreme chemical activity, combined with the high temperatures, makes necessary the use of inert atmospheres, slags, or vacuum for protection during melting and pouring. Furthermore, beryllium tends to react with the melting crucibles, tools, and molds, thus requiring the selection of suitable materials and proper maintenance of these items. 2. The very marked absorption of gas by molten beryllium and the subsequent evolution of gas during solidification causes a great deal of difficulty with unsoundness. Beryllium castings may also be subject to unsoundness as a result of gas formation by chemical reaction with the mold surface during solidification. 3. The very marked chemical affinity between molten beryllium and the normal atmosphere causes the formation of dross. On relatively quiescent melts, this dross forms a very tenacious film which, if carried over to the mold, can cause defects such as the formation of skins or dross in the interior or on the surface of the casting; folds or defects similar to cold shuts may also be found. 4. During the pour and attendant turbulence, the dross may be mixed into the metal and then carried to the casting. There it may be entrapped during freezing and cause internal defects, or it may float to the surface and cause severe dross defects on the cope side of the castings. 5. Solid beryllium is very weak at a temperature near the solidus line; brittleness is also a problem at lower temperatures. Thus, hot and cold cracking must be guarded against. Scope of the Experimental Work All of these problems have been given consideration in the work at Battelle. Before the work was started at Battelle, it was customary to melt beryllium in a vacuum furnace or under flux in graphite-lined induction furnaces. Because of the difficulty of preventing gas unsoundness in beryllium castings, an investigation was undertaken primarily to study this particular problem and, secondarily, to devise methods of overcoming the other difficulties encountered in the founding of beryllium. The objectives of the laboratory work were multifold: 1. To devise a practical method of melting, other than vacuum melting, by means of which consistently sound beryllium castings could be produced. 2. To obtain fundamental data which would promote a better understanding of the causes of gas unsoundness in beryllium. 3. To develop a casting technique which would permit low melt temperatures, minimize dross defects and hot cracking, and eliminate reaction with the mold surface. Up to the present time, a considerable amount of progress has been made on the first and third objectives, with the result that it can now be safely stated that consistently sound castings can be made by the open-pot melting method, using argon as a protective atmosphere and a proper casting technique. There has been some progress on the second objective of the project, but it cannot yet be safely stated that the problem is completely understood. Most of the experimental work has been conducted in an enclosed melting and pouring apparatus in which very-close control of melting variables has been effected. Findings based on the results of the work conducted in this small experimental apparatus have been applied to large-scale melts which have been made by techniques suitable for duplication on a commercial scale.

The separation of minerals by heavy liquids is a standard laboratory technique which goes back at least 50 years, but commercially economic application of this principal to ore concenfration has been prevented by problems of liquid recovery. Recent investigations which demonstrate the different types of liquid-solid systems on various ores using the two major heavy liquids - methylene bromide and tetra-bromoelhane — are discussed in this article. As a result of these studies, over-all liquid recovery, and especially desorption of heavy liquid from the mineral surface, was improved by the use of surfactants as well as both thermal and mechanical energy. The examples given in the article indicate that heavy liquids which should find major commercial use in ore concentration are now available. The sink-float process using a heavy liquid medium has long been recognized as a nearly perfect method of mineral separation based on the differences in density of the minerals. The use of heavy liquid separation (HLS) offers the potential of an ore dressing method that provides the maximum possible natural concentrate grade and high recovery. In addi- tion the process requires no water, causes no waste disposal problems, and is extremely simple — the crushed ore is merely introduced into a liquid whose density is between that of the minerals to be separated. The minerals lighter than the liquid float while those heavier than the liquid sink. As such, HLS has become a standard laboratory tool but major commercial application has been prevented by the requirement for complete recovery of the heavy liquid, imposed by economics and materials handling hazards. Investigations, both in the United States and abroad, have shown that improved liquid stability as well as improved chemical engineering techniques brighten the future for HLS in ore dressing. The available commercial heavy liquids suitable for mineral separation cost from $2.00 to $20.00 per gallon1 and on this basis alone their complete recovery is economically desirable. Possibly of even greater importance is the fact that any residual heavy liquid remaining on the products could create a serious toxicity hazard. Consequently, to make the process commercially attractive requires (1) essentially complete removal of the liquid from the ore products and (2) optimum recovery of the liquid for reuse. Until recently these two stipulations have remained as obstacles but laboratory and pilot plant research now in progress suggests that these may soon be overcome. Various heavy liquid recovery systems have been proposed to meet these requirements and might be classified into one or more of the following three general classes: Solvent Wash (Fig. 1): The dissolution of the heavy liquid from the ore with a less expensive solvent,

In both ignition and combustion of solid fuels, the extent of the reacting surface is an accelerating factor. Poor combustion permits a surplus of fuel to accumulate in the furnace because the rate of feed and the rate of combustion are not in equilibrium, and this produces an unbalanced condition detrimental to continued automatic service. In order to bum strongly coking coals satisfactorily in a conventional stoker during the three requisite types of operation—continuous, intermittent and hold-fire, frequent attention is necessary. Domestic stokers are defined by the industry as residential stoker heaters that burn 60 lb. of coal or less per hour. With a few exceptions, these units employ the underfeed principle of combustion in which both air and coal move in the same direction up and through the fuel bed. Domestic combustion equipment has difficulty in meeting the problems presented by the several variations in ash and volatile matter, in ash-clinkering tendencies, in coking properties, and in the particle size of bituminous coals. The work of Bituminous Coal Research Inc. at Battelle Memorial Institute has shown that, of these, coking characteristics and the clinkering tendencies have the greatest effect upon the operation of the conventional clinkering type of stoker. Typical coke formations in a clinkering type of underfeed domestic stoker are illustratcd in Fig. I, which shows (A) the ideal fuel bed obtained with a noncoking or free-burning coal; (B) the type of fuel bed formed with a coal that produces a weak coke; and (C) the type of fuel bed obtained with a strongly coking coal. C is characteristic of the fuel bed developed when the average Pennsylvania bituminous coal is burned in an underfeed stoker of conventional type. It is apparent from these pictures that the formation of coke trees will seriously interfere with the efficient automatic combustion of Pennsylvania bituminous coals.

Fox a great many years fusion welding has been used in and around petroleum refineries, but it is only within six or seven years that the more important pressure vessels have been constructed by this process, because before that time the properties of fusion welds would not withstand such rigorous service. Since the adoption of fusion welding for the construction of this equipment, the refiner has required pressure vessels suitable for operation over a very wide range of conditions. On the one hand, vessels must operate at extremely high temperatures, in the range of 950° to 1000° F., and on the other vessels must be suitable for operation at sub-zero temperatures down as low as -75° F. Also, vessels are required suitable for operation at pressures upwards of 1000 lb. per sq. in., and as low as a 29-in. vacuum. In addition, vessels are required to withstand the attack of very corrosive mediums. It has been a rather difficult task for the fabricator to meet all of these requirements, but as a result of the extensive research carried on by steel manufacturers and several fabricators of class I vessels, practically all of these demands have been met. In order to meet the refiners' requirements for this wide range of conditions, the fabricator has worked closely with the metallurgist. This has enabled him to choose the proper base metal for each service condition, but it has been the fabricator's problem to develop a welding rod and welding technique, as well as a heat-treatment, that would produce in the welded vessel characteristics in and around the weld comparable to those in the base metal. Where corrosion is not a serious problem, and where the operating temperatures are not too high, ordinary carbon steel has served very well. But when corrosion is serious, and/or when the temperatures are either very high or very low, it is necessary to use some form of alloy steel to give satisfactory service.

Edward Dyer Peters, the only child of Henry Hunter Peters and Susan Barker Thaxter, was born in Dorchester, Mass., June 1, 1849. From his father he was a descendant of the Peters family of Ipswich and Andover, Mass., whose earliest ancestor settled in Essex County in 1659; while upon his mother's side he descended from several old Hingham families, as well as from the Quineys and from Governor Bradford. Between the ages of fourteen and sixteen he was a student at the Episcopal School for boys in Cheshire, Conn. Near the school was an old tin mine, and he used to spend his Saturday afternoons exploring it. When Edward was sixteen, his father sold his property in South-borough, and for the next three years lived in Europe. Sept. 26, 1865, Edward entered the Royal School of Mines at Freiberg, Saxony. In the summer of 1867 he joined his family on Lake Geneva, and spent a part of the season in that vicinity, going to Chamounix and taking other trips. Extract from a letter to his father: Elbingerode, Harz, Aug. 30, 1868: I left Freiberg with my friend Lilienthal, on Wednesday the 19th of August, reached Leipzig in the evening and spent the night in that city: the next morning we took the cars and in the afternoon reached Eisleben, in Prussia, which was to be our first stopping-place; there are immense copper-mines and smelting-works at this place, and the method of working the mines is very peculiar ... The next morning we got up at five and spent the whole day in the smelting-works where I obtained a number of drawings of the furnaces they use here and a good many valuable data. Saturday morning we got up at four o'clock, and descended a mine about three miles from the town; the Director of this mine was one of the most intelligent and agreeable men that I ever met; he accompanied us in the mine and explained everything that was new to us. The system of mining at Eisleben is peculiar to this town, and is not used at any other place in the world; the copper ore comes in narrow, flat veins eighteen inches high, at the utmost, consequently the men work lying flat on their left side and using the pick with both hands: the ore is carried out of the side passages into the main ones, in very low waggons about twelve inches high, and four by two feet; the boys who pull these waggons have a board buckled to their left thigh and their left arm; they pass their bare foot through a strap in the waggon and wriggle along on their side dragging the waggon after them, with their foot, almost as fast as a man can walk above ground. In the afternoon we walked over to Hittstadt, about twelve miles, and remained there Sunday and Monday. Monday night, at ten o'clock we went out to one of the smelting-works, to see the refining of the copper; this is only done at night, so we worked there from ten in the evening till eleven the next morning, and came home all blackened up and with blistered hands, for our skin was not quite so tough as that of the workmen: at noon the same day we took the stage to Ascherls-leben, and then the train to Stassfurt, where there are immense salt-mines, as well as factories for the manufacture of bromium, which latter process is, however, kept a profound secret, so we had very little hope of seeing anything but the salt mines; we were talking with our landlord about our disappointment, that evening, when he told us that the director of the Bromium works was sitting in the next room with no company but his glass of beer, so we went over to him, introduced ourselves as Americans, and actually succeeded in persuading him that it could do his business no earthly hurt if he showed us his works; at last he consented, after making us give our word of honor

By executive order of the President, dated June 25, 1918, the investigation of matters relating to gas warfare, which had been initiated by the Director of the U. S. Bureau of Mines early in 1917, and had been continuously maintained and improved since, that time, was transferred to the recently created Division of Gas Warfare of the War Department. On the occasion of this transfer, both the President and the Secretary of War took occasion to speak most highly of the efficient service that had been rendered by the Bureau of Mines. It gives us great pleasure to reproduce here a letter from the President and from the Secretary of War, bearing on this subject and also to append a brief review of the work of the Bureau of Mines, prepared by its Director, Mr. Van H. Manning. The White House, Washington. June 26, 1918. MY DEAR MR. MANNING: I have had before me for some days the-question presented by the Secretary of War involving the transfer of the chemical section established by you at the American University from the Bureau of Mines to the newly organized Division-of Gas Warfare in which the War Department is now concentrating all the various facilities for offensive and defensive gas operations. I am satisfied that a more efficient organization can he effected by having these various activities under one direction and control, and my hesitation about acting in the matter has grown only out of a reluctance to take away from the Bureau of Mines a piece of work which thus far it has so effectively performed. The Secretary of War has assured me of his own recognition of the splendid work you have been able to do, and I am taking the liberty of enclosing a letter which I have received from him, in order that you may-see how fully the War Department recognizes the value of the services. I am to-day signing the order directing the transfer. I want, however, to express to you my own-appreciation of the fine and helpful piece of work which you-have-done, and to. say that this sort of team work by the bureaus outside of the direct war-making agency is one of the cheering and gratifying evidences of the way our official forces are inspired by the presence of a great national task. In the early days of preparation and organization, Dr. Manning's contact with scientific men throughout the country was indispensably valuable. He was able to summon from the universities and the technical laboratories of the country men of the highest quality and to inspire them with enthusiastic zeal in attacking new and difficult problems which had to be solved with the utmost speed. I do not see how the work could have been better done than he did it, and the present suggestion that the section now pass under the direction and control of the War Department grows out of the fact that the whole subject of gas warfare has assumed a fresh pressure and intensity, and the director of it must have the widest control so as to be able to use the resources at his command in the most effective way possible. The proposal does not involve the disruption of the fine group of scientific men Dr. Manning has brought together, but merely their transfer to General Sibert's direction. H. J. Kamack (E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co., Inc., Wilmington, Del.)—Rittinger's law usually is stated to the following effect: "The work (or energy) consumed in particle size reduction is proportional to the new surface area produced." The law has been stated substantially in this way by Taggart20 Berry21 Dalla Valle22 Coghill and DeVaney,23 Richards and Locke," Gross,25 and many others, and, according to Gaudin,26 was originally expressed by Rittinger in the same form. Consequently there can be little doubt that this is the understanding of the law among most workers in the field of particle size reduction. Bond and Wang, however, express the law in the form "the useful work accomplished . . . ." (italics theirs). The distinction is critical, for in the form used by Bond and Wang the law becomes, as they themselves remark "merely a more or less arbitrary definition of useful work," while in its usual sense the law expresses a physical hypothesis which has been verified experimentally within certain limitations. Considering the way the law has been used, it might be stated more explicitly as follows: "In a given machine operating under a given set of constant operating conditions, the work consumed in the particle size reduction of a given material is proportional to the new surface area produced." Or, as Coghill and deVaney have said,27 "the (Rittinger) law holds only when the tests being compared are made under analogous conditions." There are occasions when the law transcends these limitations; for example, the surface area produced per unit energy consumption for a given material in a ball mill does not vary much over a fairly wide range of operating conditions. But by and large, the surface area production per unit energy consumption will vary with the operating conditions, the type of machine, and the material. The essence of Rittinger's law is that the surface area production per unit energy consumption is independent of the particle size, and this has been verified experimentally by numerous workers for numerous materials, within certain limits. An important limitation is that when one grinds to very small particle sizes, agglomerative forces may tend to interfere with size reduction so that the surface area increases less rapidly than Rittinger's law would predict. Within such limitations, Rittinger's law can be regarded as empirically established. The law has, however, certain theoretical implications, and it seems to be chiefly against these that Bond and Wang direct their criticism. Solids are believed to possess surface energy which is proportional to surface area. Thus, Rittinger's law implies a proportionality between surface energy produced and mechanical energy expended (for a particular material in a particular machine). It does not imply that all or most of the mechanical energy is transformed into surface energy; in fact it is known that most of the mechanical energy is transformed into heat. Bond and Wang assert that most of this heat arises from the damping of elastic vibrations of stressed particles. This may possibly be true for crushing (with which they are chiefly concerned), although in grinding it is probable that much of the heat arises from friction between particles. However, the fact that the surface energy is small compared to the heat energy does not invalidate Rittinger's law, which implies merely that they are proportional. The authors also criticize Rittinger's law on the grounds that "this theory cannot be justified mathematically, since work is the product of force times distance, and the distance factor is ignored," and "energy input must be the product of force times distance, and the Rittinger theory completely ignores large variations in the distance (strain dimension or deformation) throughout which a force must act to produce breakage of different materials." However, the quantities force and distance as such are irrelevant to Rittinger's law, which considers energy input as an integral quantity. The fact that different materials require different forces and strains (hence, different amounts of energy) to break them is incontrovertible but again is irrelevant to Rittinger's law, which, as mentioned before, applies -only to a single material. Even in theory, it would not be expected that the surface area produced per unit energy consumption would be the same for different materials, because the surface energy per unit area is presumably specific to each material. The introduction of ovens for the production of metallurgical coke is believed to be due to L. L. Norton who operated an iron foundry in the vicinity of Connellsville, Pa. Persuaded by his foreman, an English immigrant named Nickols from Durham, L. L. Norton put up a 12-ft square oven which produced coke in 1833. The coal used was taken from a local mine at Mounts Creek. The oven seems to have been used in conjunction with the customary method of coking in mounds. It was in the Connellsville district also, in 1841, that two carpenters, Provence McCormick and James Campbell, formed a partnership with John Taylor, a stone mason, for the manufacture and sale of oven coke. The task of the mason was to construct the ovens, while the carpenters were to build the arks by which the coke could be taken by water to the market at Cincinnati. The following account of the enterprise was given by McCormick: "James Campbell and myself heard in some way that I do not now recollect that the manufacturing of coke might be made a good business. Mr. John Taylor, a stone mason, who owned the farm on which the Fayette coke works now stand, and who was mining coal in a small way, was spoken to regarding our enterprise, and proposed a partnership-he to build the ovens and make the coke and Mr. Campbell and myself to build a boat and take the coke to Cincinnati, where we heard there was a good demand. This was in 1841. Mr. Taylor built two ovens. I think they were about 10 feet in diameter. My recollection is that the charge was 80 bushels. The ovens were built in the same style as those now used, but had no iron ring at the top to prevent the brick from falling in when filling the oven with coal, nor had we any iron frames at the mouth where the coke was drawn. The top and mouth had to be repaired when they fell in. In the spring of 1842 enough coke had been made to fill two boats 90 feet long-about 800 bushels each-and we took them to Cincinnati down the Youghiogheny, Monongahela, and Ohio, but when we got there we could not sell. Mr. Campbell, who went with the boats, lay at the landing some two or three weeks, retailing out one boatload and part of the other in small lots at about 8 cents a bushel. Miles Greenwood, a foundryman of that city, offered to take the balance if he would take a small patent flour mill at $125.00 hi pay, which Mr. Campbell did. He had it shipped here. We tried it, but it was no good, and we sold it to a man in the mountains for $30.00, and thus ended our coke business." So successful did the coke subsequently prove to be in use that the three partners were asked to deliver more. Evidently they had had enough of the coke business, however, for they refused to have anything more to do with it. Few ovens were built between 1841 and 1855, and it is reported that in the latter year, "there were only 26 coke ovens along the river above Pittsburgh". Successful coke makers of these years included Mordecai Cochran, Richard Brookius, and Colonel A. M. Hill. It was the use of coke in 1859 in the Clinton furnace erected by Graff, Bennett and Co. in a plant on West Carson Street, Pittsburgh, that brought the real beginning of the coke-iron era in America. Here the successful use of Connellsville coke as a blast-furnace fuel was demonstrated beyond all possible doubt, and from the year 1859 the coking industry expanded tremendously. The era of beehive coke ovens During the latter half of the nineteenth century and the early years of the twentieth, the major percentage of metallurgical coke produced in the United States came from beehive ovens.
