W. I. Garms-—The authors state that when they added 11 tons of balls to the 45 pct volume ball load, the power needle did not budge. The question arises as to whether any increase in capacity accompanied the 11-ton addition. It is hardly conceivable that all of the balls making up the 11-ton addition were sterile. However, as the work done in the ball mill is not by kilo-watthours per se or balls per se but by kilowatthour-balls, it is possible that the kilowatthourballs in the mill before the 11-ton addition had a different amperage, voltage or robustage than those in the mill after the addition and that the overall outcome was that equal work was done before and after the addition. The authors can keep the efficiency that they got with the 45 pct volume 1-in. ball charge and get additional capacity by putting more kilowatthourballs to work in the form of the addition of 11 tons of 2-in. balls to the present ball charge, and subsequent makeup additions by weight of 20 pct 2-in. balls and 80 pct 1-in. balls. J. F. Myers (authors' reply)-—Mr. Garms points his finger at the 11 tons of "sterile" balls added to the Tri-cone mill. A fact so interesting to us that we felt it should be reported. Clearly, ball slippage at the existing mill speed prevented any further transfer of power from the shell to the ball mass. We agree that the kilowatthourballs would increase, were we charging rough 2-in. balls as suggested by Mr. Garms. The assumption is, of course, that we would get a corresponding increase in work done. Our reported data (CIME meeting, Vancouver, 1946) shows a gain of work accomplished of 7.6 pct as we decreased the ball size from 2 in. to 11/2 in. and a further gain of work accomplished of 2.1 pct when we went from 11/2 in. to 1 in. The mechanics of the continuous sintering process are briefly reviewed and the application of this process for the beneficiation of principal minerals used in making cement is shown. Pilot plant tests using pyrobeneficiation techniques were conducted with mixtures of limestone and shale in various ratios. Results are illustrated and show the percentage removal of carbon, carbonates, sulfur, alkalies, and volatiles as a function of the limestone-shale ratio. Tests with varying quantities of solid fwls, added to mixtures containing limestone and shale in a 4 to 1 ratio, were made to attain optimum elimination of the volatile constituents. Experimental results show that 90 pct of these constituents were removed during the calcination sintem'ng process. The advantages of using the beneficiated material for making cement are discussed with regard to prepam'ng, handling, and clinkering operations. A sintering process for treating raw materials or kiln waste products which contain high amounts of alkaline materials is described. Tests were performed with a high alkaline waste dust mixed in a 1 to 1 ratio with raw cement meal. The data from these tests and others using different halides for aiding alkali removal are evaluated by the alkali content of the cement clinker. Test results showed that the Dwight-Lloyd process could be applied with facility in beneficiating raw materials for cement making. Substantial quantities of deleterious volutile constituents were removed by calcining and sintering techniques. The continuous sintering process has been applied for a number of years as a means of beneficiating minerals for subsequent conversion to merchantable products. The process was developed and first used for nonferrous metallurgical applicatfons. However, it has risen to prominence for ferrous metallurgical applications where last year in the U.S. and Canada nearly 40 million tons of iron ore were treated by grate firing processes. Through the years of process development many investigators have realized the versatility of the sintering process and have directed experiments toward the use of it for applications with nonmetallic minerals. These have included calcining limestone, carbonizing coal, expanding shale, and burning cement raw meal. Today commercial sintering plants produce cement clinker from mixtures of limestone and shale, lightweight aggregate from shale or clay, and calcined products from phosphate shale. The mechanics of the downdraft sintering process have been presented by many authors. In general practice the materials to be agglomated are mixed as moistened fines with a solid fuel and this mixture is spread uniformly on the grates of the sintering machine. The charge is then momentarily directed under an ignition furnace. After ignition a continuous downdraft of air promotes combustion of the fuel and through heat transfer particles become partially fused into a coherent mass. This is cooled from continued draft induced after combustion. Many investigators have shown that distinct zones are formed during the process of sintering iron ores. At the midway point of the sintering process these are prominent and are, respectively, from the top of the bed to the bottom, comprised of a cooling zone of sintered material, a combustion zone of sinter formation, a calcination zone, a drying zone, and a zone of unreacted materials. Completion of sintering occurs near the discharge end of the machine where the firing zone approaches either the grates or grate dressing material called hearth layer. Here the peak draft temperature usually can be noted in the windboxes. The zonal pattern has been illustrated with the use of graphs which show thermal gradients as they progress through the bed of materials during sintering. Fig. 1 shows, in simplified form, thermal gradients existing when clinkering cement on a sintering machine. The thermal gradients illustrated are for periods of initiation, midway and completion of the clinkering process. A CROSS-SECTION of the converter aisle through one of the converters and reverberatories is shown in Fig. 5. The aisle is 280 ft. long by 60, ft. wide by 681 ft. to the roof trusse, which have a 63-ft. span and are us )ported by steel columns spaced at 2b-ft. centers. Two 80-ton electric trails, supplied by the Welman Smith .Owen Engineering Co., with 20-ton auxiliary lifts, serve this building. Matte shells and converter-slag shells are dumped into heavily con¬structed flat-bottom bins located on the south side of the converter aisle and 1.0 ft. above the floor. The material is broken by ball and by hand, shoveled off into ladles for unloading on to the reverberatory charge floor, and charged into the furnace as previously mentioned.

The steady-state creep characteristics of pure polycrystalline copper were studied in the temperature range 400" to 950°C and in the stress range 400 to 7000 psi. Tests were conducted in dry deoxidized hydrogen and all specimens exhibited high ductility before fracture. Two activation energies for creep were established as a function of temperature. Above about T/T, = 0.65, the activation energy for creep was 48,000 cal per mole whereas between 0.5 and 0.65 T, it was 28,000 cal per mole. The observed temperature dependence of the activation energy for creep follows the same trend as exhibited by the self-diffusion coefficient of copper in copper single crystals and silver in silver single crystals. It is therefore believed that the rate-cmtrolling mechanism in creep of copper in the stress and temperature range studied is diffusion-dependent and is probably associated with a dislocation-climb process. The low activation-energy region is attributed to enhanced volume difFusion from the presence of dislocations which act as short-circuit paths for diffusion. THERE is extensive experimental evidence1,2 that the activation energy for creep, Q,, for pure poly-crystalline metals tested at temperatures above one half the absolute melting temperature (0.5 Tm) is a constant and equal to the activation energy for volume self-diffusion, Qsd This equality is generally interpreted as meaning that creep in this temperature range is controlled by a dislocation-climb process. The existence of high-temperature creep activation energies not equal to the respective self-diffusion values has been suggested both theoretically3"5 and experimentally.6-8 Two examples of apparent nonequality between Q, and Qsd have been reported for the cases of silver7 and copper,' where activation energies for creep much lower than those for self-diffusion persist to rela- tively high temperatures (up to 0.6 T,). These observations suggest that dislocation climb may not be the only important process in the high-temperature deformation of these metals. That dislocation climb does indeed occur relatively slowly in these two metals due to their low stacking-fault energy has been suggested by many investigators.9-10 Although the creep behavior of copper has been studied extensively at low temperatures, the high-temperature activation energy for creep is not well-defined. The data of Feltham and Meakin8 indicated that Q, is temperature-dependent above one half the melting temperature, equaling a value of -30,000 cal per mole at temperatures up to 550°C and increasing to a value of -49,000 cal per mole at 700°C. No data has been reported above 700°C. The value of 49,000 cal per mole is very near the value of Qsd for copper reported by Kuper et al." as 47,100 cal per mole. In view of the lack of high-temperature creep data and the apparent temperature dependence of Q, for copper the present investigation was undertaken to determine the value of Q, over the temperature range of 400" to 950°C. It was hoped that such a study would clearly document the temperature dependence of Q, and yield significant information as to the nature of the rate-controlling creep mechanisms. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURES The material used in this investigation was high-purity OFHC copper. After rolling and recrystal-lization treatments spectrographic and chemical analyses showed only 0.0008 pct Ag, 0.0002 pctCa, 0.0002 pct H2, and 0.002 pct O2 as trace impurities indicating a purity of greater then 99.995 pct. Specimens were machined from cold-rolled sheet and the gage sections polished with 2/0 emery paper prior to annealing treatments. Annealing was done in both vacuum and dry deoxidized hydrogen atmospheres. No variation in creep strength was found as a result of the different annealing atmospheres. The final annealing temperature was either 700°, 800°, or 1000°C depending on the temperature range to be studied. A DISTINGUISHED engineer, the active head of a large mining company, has said that surveying attains the dignity of a profession only in the hands of a few men-the few who know how to keep notes that will be understood by even a novice without further word of explanation. Of all mine-records, survey notes are perhaps the most important. The maps made from them serve as a working-guide, and as framework for other data ; and when, from any cause, access to underground workings is shut off, the surveyor's record often becomes invaluable. So seldom does a surveyor have a chance to check underground surveys by making a closure, that he is compelled to rely on the precision of each step of his work for the accuracy of the final result. When data are fully recorded on the spot, the notes, even in the hands of second parties, become evidence of the care and precision with which the surveying was done. It is worth a great deal to be able to pick up the work of a former surveyor where it was left o$; and to be able to carry it forward without retracing from the beginning. The purpose of this paper is to describe the survey-note system of a mine now under my direction, in which underground surveys had to be relied upon entirely for the proper division of rich ore-bodies between neighbors, thereby placing a premium on accurate surveying and permanent records. In survey-work, it soon turns out that paper is the least item of expense, and that little is gained by trying to economize note-book space. For many purposes it is best to record notes on cards or loose-leaves, which may be left in the office at the end of the day's work, and need not be carried into the mine again, there to become smeared with grime and grease. A wire-feed mechanism has been employed to fabricute metal alloy film resistors to various sheet resistivities on oxidized silicon substrates. The effect of several thousand hours storage in air at elevated temperatures on the resistance and temperature coefficient of resistance is presented. Unprotected films of- sheet resistivity between 100 and 500 ohms per sq fabricated at 300°C substrate tenzperatures were unstable when stored at 150°Cfor extended periods. The higher sheet resistivity films exhibited the greatest instability; however, even the 100 ohms per sq films drijted excessively for device application. When stored at still higher temperatures, the normalized resistance increases to maximum, then decreases until a minimum value is obtained, then finally increases in resistance until open. The use of a protective overcoating of SiO has had considerable benejicial effects on the film stability, so that 250 ohms per sq films deposited on 300°C substrates are now stable after 1000 hr storage at 250°C and possess a temperature coefficient of resistance less than 200 ppm per C. The use of a low substrate temperature during depositon (100°C) enables the preparation oj resistors with very low tenperature coefficients of resistance (10 to 20 ppnl per 'C). However, these films are less stable than their higher substrate temperatuve counterparts. During extended storage, the resistance of the protected films always decreases with lower substrate films exhibiting larger normalized resistance decreases. This resistance decrease is accompanied by a linearly related increase in the temperature coefficient of resistance. The electrical behavior of these films may be explained by postulating That the structure of the films is in the transition region between thick continuous films and ultrathin island structure films so that the conductivity is the restlt of both electron scattering and tunneling-activated charge carrier creation between neighboring grains. The annealing behavior when thermally aged is the result of defect anneal, grain growth, and selective oxidation. TheRE is a considerable interest in thin metallic films for use as resistor elements in microelectronic circuits.1,2 These resistor films must be stable when exposed to elevated-temperature storage or operating ambient, possess low temperature coefficients of resistance (hereafter referred to as T.C.R.), and be of a high enough sheet resistivity to be useful. The resistivity and T.C.R. of a thin metallic film are determined by the structure and thickness of the film. Hence the stability of the film when exposed to stress would depend on the stability of the structure. The resistivity of a thin film is the result of the electrons' interaction with the lattice vibrations (electron-phonon scattering), scattering of electrons due to impurities, defects, and grain boundaries and specula reflection from the film surfaces.3' All of these effects serve to reduce the electron mean free path and result in a resistivity higher than the ideal bulk. In ultrathin films possessing essentially an island structure consisting of a planar array of aggregates separated by a few to a few tens of angstroms, conduction is dominated by a combination of tunneling and activated charge carrier reation. Thin films would be characterized by relatively low resistivity, positive T.C.R., and reasonable structure stability whereas ultrathin films possess unstable structures, negative T.C.R., and exhibit high resistivity. Feldman6 has investigated films intermediate between the two regions and postulates that the resistivity of a film in the transition region is composed of two linearly additive parts: that due to the resistance of the grains and that due to the gaps. The grain resistivity would represent the scattering of the conduction electrons by defects, surfaces, and phonon interaction while the gap term represents the tunneling contribution. For gold and platinum films, he found as the film structure becomes progressively less continuous, corresponding to thinner films, the absolute value of the T.C.R. becomes progressively smaller until negative values are observed with respective zero T.C.R.'s at about 35 and 150 ohm per sq, respectively. Recently the author7 investigated the behavior of a multicomponent alloy of nickel, chromium, and iron and found the T.C.R.'s of these films decrease with decreasing substrate temperature during deposition. The lower T.C.A. associated with lower substrate temperatures was attributed to an increased contribution to the total resistivity from the negatively temperature-dependent gap tunneling since it is well-known that thin films deposited on low-temperature substrates consist of a higher density of smaller grains than the same sheet resistivity films deposited on higher-temperature substrates. Under conditions of thermal anneal, the author found that, when various sheet resistivity films fabricated at 300°C substrate temperature are exposed to extended storage in air at 300°C, the thinner films increase in resistance until open, while the thicker films

A graphic method has been devised for three-di-mensional analysis of hot deformation and for correlating the amount and directionality of the deformation with resulting directional properties. Deformation is evaluated in terms of dimensional change ratios referred to three orthogonal axes. Since all combinations of the three ratios can be represented in a triangular coordinate field with logarithmic scales, a two-dimensional chart of extent of deformation and degree of asymetry is possible. The entire gamut of shape changes from upsetting through flat-rolling to rod-rolling is accommodated. The resulting coordinate system is a base upon which can be represented the properties of the wrought products measured in the directions of the axes employed fir evaluating the deformation. When property data are available for many types and amounts of deformation, a three-dimensional figure can be constructed, and the projection of this figure is referred to as a ''3d'' chart. Experience in using such charts to plan fabricating operations for a variety of thick-section forged and rolled products of heat-treated aluminum alloys has verified its practical value for optimizing directionality relationships. MechANICAL anisotropy of thick section products of heat-treatable aluminum alloys is recognized by producers and users of these products, and the extent of the directional differences is apparent in property tabulations included in handbooks, standards, and specifications.' Attention has also been directed to the existence of important directional differences in the resistance of these products to stress-corrosion cracking. Metallurgical structure factors responsible for these directional differences include, among other possibilities, shape and alignment of grains, voids and nonmetallic inclusions (when present), volume fraction and spatial distribution of secondary phase particles and solid-state precipitates, crystal-lographic textures, and Bauschinger effect. The contributions of the individual factors vary with alloy composition, heat-treated temper, type of working process (forging, rolling, extrusion), and the amount and directional nature of the deformation. In general, the cast ingot used as the starting material for producing these wrought products exhibits only a modest degree of directionality. A monotonic and continuous transition from this nearly isotropic state with progressive hot deformation would appear probable, assuming that the working temperature is sufficiently high to cause continuous dynamic recovery. Several years ago a project was undertaken to evaluate the effects of hot deformation and metallurgical structures on the directionality of thick wrought aluminum alloy products, and the method to be described was developed as an analytical tool in this investigation. DIRECTION NOMENCLATURE The nomenclature system adopted by industry for the three mutually perpendicular directions employed in testing aluminum alloy products includes four terms: "longitudinal", "transverse", "long transverse", and "short transverse". These terms are conventionally related to the external geometry of the product but also by implication to the deformation and resulting metallurgical structure. Occasions arise in which through use of unusual fabricating methods, intentional or otherwise, the structure does not have the usual relationship to external geometry or may be very complex because of inhomogeneity of deformation throughout the piece. The longitudinal direction is generally parallel to the primary rolling direction or to the direction of extrusion. In the case of forging, it is parallel to the direction of maximum extension (not maximum "working" or "flow", as frequently stated). The term transverse is applied to any direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction in a product having symmetry about the longitudinal axis, and generally, although not always, the deformation to produce these forms is nearly symmetrical in the transverse plane. This term then may be applied to a round, square, hexagon, or other polygonal, symmetrical shape produced by extrusion or rolling or by forging, if produced by a simple, symmetrical drawing procedure. The initial phase of a research program on smoke abatement from Bessemer converters is described. In work sponsored by the American Iron and Steel Institute, a 300-lb experimental Bessemer converter was assembled to simulate blowing conditions in a commercial vessel. Measurements of smoke and dust were also made in the field on a 30-ton commercial vessel. During normal blows the dust loading from the laboratory converter averaged 0.51 lb per 1000 lb of exhaust gas. This was similar to the exhaust-gas loading of a commercial vessel. The addition of hydrogen to the blast gas of the laboratory converter caused a decided decrease in smoke density. Smoke was also reduced markedly when methane or ammonia was added instead of hydrogen. The research is continuing on a bench-scale investigation of the mechanism of smoke formation in the converter process. DURING the past 2 years, on behalf of the American Iron and Steel Institute, Battelle has been conducting a research program on the control of emissions from pneumatic steelmaking processes. The objective of the research program is to discover a practical method for reducing to an unobjectionable level the emission of smoke and dust from Bessemer converters. PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION Although conceivably some new collecting technique may be devised which would be economically practicable for cleaning Bessemer gases, no such system based on presently known principles seems feasible because of the extremely large volume of high-temperature gases involved. Hence, the research is being directed toward prevention of smoke formation at the source. A thorough review was first made of former work to determine the present status of the cleaning of converter gases. No published work was found on work done in the United States on collecting smoke or on preventing its formation in the bottom-blown, acid-Bessemer converter. In Europe, however, a number of investigations have been made on the basic-Bessemer converter. Kosmider, Neuhaus, and Kratzenstein1 conducted tests on a 20-ton converter to obtain characteristic data for dust removal and the utilization of waste heat. They concluded that because of the submicron size of the dust, special equipment would be necessary to clean the exhaust gases. Dehne2 conducted a large number of smoke-abatement experiments at Duisburg-Huckingen in a 36-ton Thomas converter discharging into a stack. A number of wet-scrubbing and dry collectors were tried unsuccessfully. A waste-heat boiler and electrostatic collector with necessary gas precleaners was felt to be the best solution for this particular plant. Meldau and Laufhutte3 determined that the particle size was all below 1 µ in the waste gas of a bottom-blown converter. Sel'kin and zadalya4 describe the use of oxygen-water mixtures injected into a molten bath in refining open-hearth steel. They claim that with use of oxygen-water mixtures the amount of dust formed was reduced between 33.3 and 20 pct of its previous level, and emission of brown smoke almost ceased. Pepperhoff and passov5 attempted unsuccessfully to find some correlation between the optical absorption of the smoke, the flame emission, and the composition of the metal in a Thomas converter in order to determine automatically the metallurgical state in the melt. In a recent U. S. Patent (NO. 2,831,762)' issued to two Austrian inventors, Kemmetmuller and Rinesch, the inventors claim a process for treating the exhaust gases from a converter. By their method the inventors claim that the exhaust gases from the converter are cooled immediately after leaving the converter to a degree that oxidation of the metal vapors and metal particles to form Fe2O3 is inhibited in the presence of surplus oxygen. Gledhill, Carnall, and sargent7 report on cleaning the gases from oxygen lancing of pig iron in the ladle. They claim the Pease-Anthony Venturi scrubber removed 99.5 + pct of the smoke, thereby reducing the concentration to 0.1 to 0.2 grain per cu ft, which resulted in a colorless stack gas after the evaporation of water. Fischer and wahlster8 developed a small basic converter and compared the metallurgical behavior of the blow with that of a large converter. Later work by Kosmider, Neuhaus, and Hardt9 on the use of steam for reduction of smoke from an oxygen-enriched converter confirmed that the cooling effect of steam is detrimental to production. From review of all of the published information on the subject, it was concluded that a practical solution to the smoke-elimination problem had not been found. Accordingly, it was deemed desirable to investigate the feasibility of preventing the initial formation of smoke in the converter.

AS a result of recent studies, the constitution of the zirconium-uranium system has been fairly well defined. A diagram for the system is shown in Fig. 1. However, both oxygen and nitrogen are known1-3 to have a pronounced effect on the limits of both ß- and e -phase regions. It has been shown that small amounts of oxygen severely constrict the compositional limits of these phase regions in the ternary zirconium-uranium-oxygen system. A previously published tentative diagram shown in Fig. 2 illustrates the ß-phase constriction resulting from oxygen additions. Generally, iodide zirconium has been used in constitutional studies of zirconium-uranium alloys. While this is the highest purity material available, cast iodide zirconium-uranium alloys will generally average from 200 to 300 ppm 0 and from 50 to 60 ppm N. Thus, while the constitution of the zirconium-uranium system is fairly well defined, it must be realized that this definition applies to alloys containing in the vicinity of 250 ppm 0 and 50 ppm N. THE high affinity of molten titanium for oxygen and nitrogen has resulted in considerable difficulty in developing a satisfactory melting procedure. It has been found necessary to perform melting operations either in a vacuum or inert atmos-phere, and failure to obtain a satisfactory crucible material has necessitated the use of special melting techniques. These techniques have included cold-mold arc-melting utilizing both consumable and nonconsumable electrodes, skull-melting, drip-melting, and levitation melting.' It has been recognized generally that the melting of both titanium sponge and titanium scrap would be expedited by the use of induction-melting procedures but the lack of a crucible capable of containing molten titanium without objectionable contamination thus far has prevented the use of induction-melting procedures. An extensive investigation: which included the common refractory materials was not successful in developing a satisfactory crucible for induction-melting. Some success in induction-melting has been attained with the use of a graphite crucible material, but in all instances sufficient carbon contamination was encountered to cause an appreciable reduction in the optimum mechanical properties of the titanium or titanium alloys. These investigations"" report an increase in the carbon content from approximately 0.3 to 1.0 pct. A serious reduction in the tensile and forming properties has been observed as a result of this carbon contamination. The development of a satisfactory induction-melting procedure for titanium without undue contamination undoubtedly would have considerable economic significance. Such a process would be particularly useful in melting the large quantities of low-cost scrap now available that can only be reprocessed at considerable expense and difficulty by the more elaborate techniques referred to previously. In addition, the process could provide a satisfactory method of melting and alloying of bri-quetted sponge for forging ingots.

P. Coheur and L. Habraken—We read this paper with great interest and are glad to congratulate the authors for their valuable work, supplying an important contribution to the mechanism of tempering on the carbides in vanadium steels. We are in a good position to appreciate this work since we have been studying, for more than a year, Cr-Mo steels of a composition similar, but less highly alloyed (namely 0.1 pct C, 3 pct Cr, 1 pct Mo). Our results are quite in concordance with the authors', however, we wish to point out that it is very interesting to use equally the electron microscope in order to observe the variations of microstructure in steels. We have studied simultaneouslv the evolution of the carbides in situ with the electron microscope, and, after extraction, again with the electron microscope, and then with X-rays. The first results which we have obtained have been communicated at the Congress of Delft (July 1949) and at the "Journbes de la Metallurgie" in Paris (October 1949). These may be summarized as follows: After tempering with varying either the tempering temperatures or the tempering times, the carbides show two evolutions. The effect of pressure on the extension of the ? loop in the FeSi system has been determined by means of metallogvaphic studies and hardness measurements performed on a series of high-purity Fe-Si alloys containing 7.5, 11.0, and 13.9 at. pct Si, respectively. These mensurements, performed at 42 kbar and temperatures up to 1200oC, indicate that the ? loop is expanded to about 10 at. pct Si at 42 kbar as opposed to a maximum extension of 4 at. pct Si at 1 atm. Comparison of the experimental results with thermodynamic predictions of the pressure shifts yields satisfnctory results. DURING the past few years, several studies have been performed in our laboratory1-' in order to determine the effect of high pressure on phase equilibrium in pure iron and iron-base alloys. The purpose of these studies has been to elucidate the effects of high pressure experimentally and to compare the observed results with predicted pressure effects derived on the basis of known thermody-namic and volumetric data at 1 atm. These studies have included work on pure iron2,5,7 as well as Fe-Ni,1,5 Fe-cr,l,5 and Fe-c4-6 alloys. In addition, Tanner and Kulin3 have reported results of pressure studies on two Fe-Si alloys containing 2.0 and 6.25 at. pct Si. At the time of this latter study, no detailed information was available concerning the difference in volume between the a (bcc) and ? (fcc) phases in the Fe-Si system as a function of silicon content. In order to compare their observations with calculated pressure shifts, Tanner and Kulin were forced to assume that silicon had no effect on the difference in volume between a and ? iron. The resulting discrepancy between their calculation of the a/? phase boundary at 42 kbar and the observed results led them to the conclusion that silicon additions probably decrease the difference in volume between a and ? iron. Recently: Cockett and Davis8,9 have reported de- tailed studies of the lattice parameters of a series of Fe-Si alloys at temperatures ranging from 20" to 1150°C. These measurements, performed on alloys in the bcc and fcc range, show that silicon does indeed decrease the difference in volume between a and ? iron. By correcting the calculations of Tanner and Kulin in line with the observed effect of silicon they were able to show improved agreement between computed and observed pressure shifts.' The present measurements were undertaken to provide additional corroboration of this effect, by extending the range of composition, in addition to exploring a situation where large extensions of a ? loop could result in impingement of the ? field with an ordered bcc phase (based on Feo.75Sio.25). I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES AND RESULTS The alloys investigated were obtained from Dr. F. Kayser of M.I.T. They were prepared at the Ford Scientific Laboratory by vacuum melting electrolytic iron and high-purity silicon. The melts were poured under an argon atmosphere into hot-topped steel molds. Subsequently the ingots were hot-worked down to 1/2-in.-diam rods. Three alloys containing 7.5, 11.0, and 13.9 pct Si were studied. Carbon, regarded as the principal impurity, analyzed at, or below, 0.001 wt pct for all of the alloys. Prior to pressure-temperature treatment, the rod was annealed for 24 hr in vacuum at 1000°C, water-quenched, and subsequently machined into 0.100-in.-diam by 0.100-in.-long specimens. Subsequent to machining, the specimens were again annealed and then examined metallographically. They were found to exhibit a clear coarse-grained ferrite similar to Figs. 10 and 110 of Ref. 1 and Fig. 2 of Ref. 3. Subsequently, specimens of each alloy were equilibrated at 42 kbar at various temperatures in supported piston apparatus.1,3,4,6 Three specimens, one of each alloy, were wrapped in platinum and exposed simultaneously. The pressure-temperature cycle consisted of increasing the pressure from ambient to 42 kbar at 25oC, heating rapidly to the desired temperature, holding for 15 min, and quenching to 100°C, followed by slower cooling to 25°C and pressure release. The crystal orientation in silicon iron that has been given a particular treatment described by Goss,l has been studied by Goss, by Bozorth2 and by Sixtus,3 but their results do not agree and are almost entirely qualitative. The following pages give a description of the orientation of the crystals in the material as determined by means of X-rays and expressed graphically in a pole figure. The treatment consists of hot-rolling the material into strip and then giving it two cycles of cold reduction followed by recrystallization. This produces remarkably good properties in the rolling direction, the product having a maximum permeability in this direction of more than 25,000 and a permeability at 16,000 Gauss of more than 2200. It is now generally agreed that Goss's original conclusion1 that the crystals in the final product are randomly oriented was incorrect, since Bozorth2 and Sixtus,3 using different methods, have shown that there is a decided preference in orientation. Those writers, however, expressed their results only in terms of one or more ideal orientations with deviations therefrom. X-ray Data A strip of the material containing 3.1 per cent Si, prepared by Goss,† 1.2 by 0.0125 in., was etched rapidly in warm dilute hydrochloric acid until it was 0.005 in. thick, in order to eliminate the effect of the two surface layers. The specimen was then mounted in an integrating camera similar to one described in the literature.4 The purpose of this camera is to translate the specimen during exposure, so that a statistically large number of grains contribute to the pattern photographed. The camera also allows the plane of the specimen to make various angles with the X-ray beam. An area 5 by 1.2 in. was scanned by a beam of unfiltered radiation from a molybdenum target tube operating at 37 kv., and the measurements were made principally on the peak of the white radiation. THERE are many who know The Lucky Tiger and will remember the 35-mile road from Esqueda, a station on The Nacozari Railroad in northern Sonora, Mexico. They will remember the box canyons of the Agua Caliente Mountains which are scarcely wide enough for two cars to pass; the Bavispe River which one hour may be a lazy trickle and the next a sweeping torrent, and the tortuous road up Tigre and Espuela canyons, now following the wash, now hugging some gigantic red cliff. It is still the same. From camp the view of the distant blue-gray mountains is the same. But one thing a visitor of a former day might miss: The hundreds of pack mules and burros, loaded with concentrates from the mill, which used to take most of the road and show up at the most inopportune places, have almost disappeared, replaced of course by the auto truck.

The presence of soluble base metals in precious-metal ores usually precludes cyanidation as the best method of treatment. The laboratory experiments described in this paper show the possibility of cyanidation of gold-silver ores containing less than 0.5 per cent. of cyanide-soluble copper and the effect of zinc in the cyanide solution. Part I.—Copper in Cyanidation The proposed process of cyanidation of precious-metal ores containing copper is based on the regeneration of about 80 per cent. of the cyanide used in the dissolution of the copper. The method of regeneration involves a combination of the sulfide and the acid precipitation of the copper and silver. The resultant solution is made alkaline with lime, and the gold is precipitated with zinc dust. Solubility of Copper Minerals in Cyanide Solution In order to determine the solubility of copper minerals, including metallic copper, under the usual conditions for cyanidation, experiments were conducted with synthetic ores. Each ore sample was prepared by mixing the particular pure copper mineral with barren sea sand. Both the mineral and sand were ground to pass 100 mesh before they were thoroughly mixed. The percentage of copper in each head sample was determined by direct assay, excepting the metallic copper sample, which was computed on weights before mixing. Table 1 gives the results. Azurite, bornite, chalcocite, cuprite, malachite and finely divided metallic copper are readily and completely soluble under the usual conditions for cyanidation. Enargite and tetrahedrite are sufficiently soluble to cause an excessive loss of cyanide, and they also cause fouling of solutions with arsenic and antimony. Precious-metal ores containing small percentages of chalcopyrite or chrysocolla may give satisfactory returns with the usual cyanidation.

THE world-wide continuation of low prices for zinc in 1934 has militated against any striking changes in the position of the metal. The price of zinc in London at the end of the year, about £11 5/8 per long ton, or 2.5c per pound at the existing rate of exchange, is more than 25 per cent below the average price for last year. In these circumstances probably the most significant event of the year was the putting into operation of the new electrolytic plant of the Giesches company at Magdeburg, Germany. This plant is designed to have an initial capacity of 20,000 long tons per year, and it is planned to increase this to 40,000 tons annually. This development is significant not only as indicating a continued swing of zinc metallurgy towards electrolytic methods, but also because it will make Germany virtually independent of foreign sources of zinc. This will mean that the zinc tonnage normally exported to Germany from Belgium and Poland will. become available for other markets, and it is feared may lead to lower prices unless the production of Bel-

Back pressure test data on natural gas wells are short time test data of unsteady state nature. Performance curves from which unsteady state effects have been eliminated, called stabilized performance curves, are necessary for understanding the behavior of gas wells and for scheduling gas fields for periods up to 20 years. A calculation procedure has been developed whereby three day, seven day, 30 day, or other duration stabilized performance curves may be calculated from back pressure test data. Such curves are essential for correct gas deliverability calculations and gas field scheduling. I NTRODUCTION The manner in which a back pressure test is made will affect the slope of the back pressure curve because the radius of drainage changes with the length of time that the well is allowed to flow. The reciprocal of the slope of the back pressure curve is defined as n in Equation 1 and varies from 0.5 to 1.0. If the flow is viscous and the radius of drainage constant, n will have a value of 1.0. Because of turbulence in the formation near the wellbore, the pressure drop is usually greater than the viscous flow pressure drop and the exponent n is frequently less than 1.0. In addition, since the radius of drainage moves away from the well-bore during the test, the gas flows a greater and greater distance as the test proceeds, with a resulting increased pressure drop at the high flow rates, and, again, n for the test tends to be less than 1.O. The effect of the changes in the radius of drainage may be calculated and the results used in preparing stabilized performance curves for fixed values of the radius of drainage. Such curves can be made for a defi- nite time period, such as three day, seven day, or 30 day stabilized performance curves. These cukes will show the effect of turbulence near the wellbore and can be used to predict the performance of the gas well at any flow rate or for any production period. In order to discuss the importance of the radius of drainage quantitatively, it should be defined. Muskat" defines the radius of drainage as follows: "... the radius of drainage gives the distance from the well to which the approximately steady state condition has been established ... it being assumed that no gas is removed from any point until the radius of drainage has passed that uoint." An eauivalent definition of the radius of drainage is that radius at which the extrapolated portion of the steady state portion of the pressure gradient gives a pressure equal to the shut-in reservoir pressure. This definition is also implied in the back pressure equation. The radius of drainage is, then, the distance into the reservoir from which the gas appears to originate at any time. It is, however, only a useful concept and does not actually exist. Fig. 1 illustrates the definition of the radius of drainage. At the end of each flow period the radius of drainage may depend on three factors: (1) the duration of each flow period; (2) the rate of gas production; and (3) the rate and duration of the previous flow periods. In general, back pressure tests are conducted with various lengths of production time and at various flow rates. Each individual back pressure test, therefore, requires an individual analysis. The calculations of the change in the radius of drainage have been made, however, for the case of equal flow periods for all four production rates and several sets of increasing flow rates. Fig. 2 illustrates the results of such calculations made by the method of Cornell and Katz2 for the case of 8, = 50,000 and the flow rate increasing in the ratio 1.0:2.0:3.0:4.0 for each flow period. The increase in the radius of drainage during the test is apparent.
