For perhaps one hundred years scientists have been engaged in attempts at devising a satisfactory method of classification of coal. During this time many charts, tables and graphs have been proposed, some of which have had considerable merit, but no one system has been found to be applicable to all ranks of coal, nor has any one system received general acceptance. In many of the proposals, water eliminated between room temperature and 105" C. has been regarded as extraneous matter and calculations have been made to the air-dry or water-free basis. Such methods of calculation do not lend themselves to satisfactory grouping of the high-moisture coals.1, 2 A consideration not only of the properties of the high-moisture coals and their behavior on drying but of the generally accepted ideas of the coalification process and the role of water in this process indicates that water is an essential constituent of all coals and therefore should not be neglected. For example, in such low-rank coals as the lignites of the Northern Great Plains' deposits the inherent moisture of the lignite as mined plays a very important part in the physical properties thereof. Freshly mined lignite contains upwards of 30 per cent water and is extremely tough and resistant to shock. Upon exposure to the atmosphere, the lump loses part of its moisture and checks and splits, leaving a friable and broken up residue. So far as we have been able to determine, water is the only thing lost in this process and we are forced to the conclusion that moisture plays an extremely important part in the structural properties of the original lignite. With reference to the coalification process, Mack and Hulett3 pointed out in 1917 the important part that water played therein. They observed that water cannot be removed from peat or coal by pressure alone, but only as the result of chemical reaction, and suggested that peat in its early stages may be largely a hydrosol. Many of the auriferous placers of the arid Southwest differ widely from the standard types of stream and eluvial deposits of more humid regions, although exhibiting some of the features of each. This divergence in characteristics is of geological and economic importance and appears sufficient to warrant the consideration of these placers as a class distinct from both stream and eluvial deposits. It is hoped that the consideration of these auriferous gravels as a distinct type of deposit will facilitate recognition of morphological and economic features that might remain obscure if these deposits were viewed in the light of stream or eluvial placers whose type locality is a more humid environment. "Bajada placer" is proposed as the designation for this type of placer deposit. Bajada is the Spanish term for slope and is used locally in the Southwest to indicate the lower slope of a mountain range, the portion consisting of rock debris and standing at a much lower angle than the rock slope of the range proper. It has been used in a geologic sense by Schraderl and others. The type locality of bajada placers is the Sonoran Desert,2 where they occur on the bajada or rock debris slope of desert ranges. Stream placers are represented in the Southwest, but most of them lie within the mountain topographic province, the Mexican Highlands2 section of the Basin and Range physiographic province. Eluvial placers may occur in the mountainous semiarid Mexican Highlands but are almost unknown in the extremely arid Sonoran Desert, as mountain slopes are generally too steep to permit the accumulation of any considerable mantle of residual debris. Since their salient distinctions are almost wholly the result of formation under conditions of extreme aridity, bajada placers are largely confined to the Sonoran Desert, although a few occur in the adjacent Mexican Highlands. They may be modified by the action of ephemeral streams, in which case the placer gravels of these arroyos approach stream placers in type and habit of occurrence, but their relation to an arid environment and the bajada type is usually apparent.

EVEN the weather man joined in a friendly conspiracy to make the fall meeting of the Industrial Minerals Division at Rolla, Mo., Oct. 23-25. the splendid surges that it was. Following weeks of rain, the foliage of the Ozarks was still green, merely enlivened here and there by splashes of autumn coloring. In contrast to the tranquil beauty of the School of Mines campus under smiling Indian summer skies, the pace of the meeting was lively. Registration was larger than at any previous meeting and included an unusual number of prominent names and delegates from all over the country. From 125 to 150 were present throughout the three technical sessions, at the Thursday evening smoker, and also at the banquet on Friday; when students trooped in to the technical sessions the audience was augmented occasionally to over 200.

The deformation mechanisms operating in Ti-5Al-2.5Sn at 20°K under uniaxial and biaxial stress fields were determined by using both optical and electron microscopy. In the uniaxially stressed specimens, de-fu~rnation twins were found only in the immediate vicinity of the fracture. Twinning was, however, established as a deformation mechanism under biaxial stress conditions. The same slip systems were opera-tiz,e under both uniaxial and biaxial stress. Prismatic slip was identified as the major slip syslem; however, basal and first-order pyramidal slip also occurred, but to a lesser degree. The interaction of moving dis-locations on intersecting slip planes resulted in the formation of jogs and dipoles. Hexagonal dislocation networks were formed only under biaxial stress conditions. A discussion is given on the formation of hexagonal dislocation networks. IT has been shown that titanium alloys can exhibit unusually high strengths when tested in a biaxial stress field.'-" The high biaxial strengths are a consequence of a strong basal plane sheet texture which results in distinctly anisotropic flow properties. This texture strengthening appears to decrease with decreasing temperature2 and would seem to indicate a change in deformation modes. For example, in a uniaxial tensile test, Ti-5A1-2.5Sn yields isotropically at 20°K but is strongly anisotropic at room temperature. The increase in biaxial ultimate over uniaxial strength at 20°K is also much less than at room temperature. It is known that titanium car] form deformation twins more readily at cryogenic temperatures than at room temperature.4 Since the formation of deformation twins will reduce the degree of basal texture in sheet material,' an accompanying decrease in texture strengthening would be expected. To investigate more fully the nature of texture strengthening at cryogenic temperatures, the deformation modes of Ti-5A1-2.5Sn tested in uniaxial and 1:1 biaxial tension at 20°K were studied by optical and electron transmission microscopy. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The uniaxial and biaxial stress test specimens were prepared from 0.020-in. thick sheets of Ti-5A1-2.5Sn ELI having the composition shown in Table I. Uniaxial stress conditions were obtained by using flat tensile specimens machined from the sheet material. The longitudinal axis of the tensile specimens was aligned perpendicular to the rolling direction of the sheet. Tile biaxial test specimens were prepared by rolling precut, 19-in.-lengths of sheet into 4-in.-diam cyl- inders. Following longitudinal butt welding, the cylinders were stress relieved at 1000°F for 4 hr. A 9-in. sq "window" was then chemically milled into each cylinder's surface reducing the wall thickness in the milled area to approximately 0.006 in. The testing procedure consisted of pressurizing the cylinders while simultaneously applying a tensile load. Using this technique, a 1:l axial to hoop stress was obtained. Complete details of the specimen and testing procedures are given in Refs. 1 and 2. The biaxial and uniaxial stress specimens were all tested in liquid hydrogen. Specimens for electron transmission microscopy were prepared by first chemically milling to a thickness of about 0.001 in. followed by electrolytic polishing to electron transmission thickness. AT the present time, there appear to be two conflicting opinions on the solubility of boron in titanium. P. Ehrlich' has indicated from X-ray diffraction work that boron is soluble in titanium up to TiB0.8 (17.8 wt pct, 44 atomic pct). The X-ray diffraction pattern for titanium was found in compositions up to TiB0.05_0.07 (1.1 to 1.6 wt pct); then, without a phase gap, superlattice lines appeared up to TiB0.8 On the other hand, Craighead, Simmons, and Eastwood' have estimated the solubility of boron in both alpha and beta titanium to be less than 0.1 wt pct, based on results of metallographic analysis. In some recent work done at Battelle, results were obtained which shed more light on the titanium-rich end of the titanium-boron system. Iodide-type titanium and high-purity crystalline boron were used in this investigation. The boron was prepared by hydrogen reduction of boron tri-bromide and deposition on a hot tungsten wire. The alloys were prepared by arc melting in an argon atmosphere of 10 cm Hg pressure on a water-cooled copper hearth. The ingots were hot rolled to strip at 850°C. Alloys containing up to 1 pct B could be hot rolled. Those containing 2 pct or more B could not be hot rolled. Metallographically, it was found that a second phase was present in alloys containing as little as 0.4 pct B, and that the quantity of second phase increased with increasing boron content. This is illustrated in Figs. la and lb, which show the microstructures of a Ti-0.4B and a Ti-1B alloy annealed in argon at 850°C. X-ray diffraction patterns of alloys containing 1 and 5 pct B revealed the presence of extra lines which correspond to the superlattice lines reported by Ehrlich.' However, no evidence was found of a shift in the lattice constants of alpha titanium indicating that there is very little, if any, solubility of boron in alpha titanium. This fact, coupled with the fact that the alloys were definitely two-phase, indicates that the extra lines are not superlattice lines, but are more probably the result of a second phase of a hexagonal structure almost identical in cell

MUCH the same story can be told about the copper industry for the year 1944 as for the three preceding years. Operators report few or no technical changes at their plants and the main endeavor has been to maintain high production with existing equipment. No large new installations have been made to increase plant capacities and apparently over-all copper production has passed its maximum. The present decline in copper production results partly from the severe labor shortage. As is true of most industries; the outstanding fact about the copper industry during the past few years has been its tremendous and sustained production which has been maintained in spite of serious shortages in material. labor, and technical personnel. The figures in Table I give a concrete example of how production has been increased at one large smelter in the United States-the Garfield plant of the American Smelting and Refining Co. at Garfield. Utah. These figures, reported by W. G. Rouillard. superintendent. give the production of the Garfield plant for the five years 1940-44 inclusive. The total blister production

An account is given of the way in which a new process for desulphurization of hot metal is carried out at a Swedish blastfurnace plant. In the process powdered burnt lime is used as a desulphurizing agent in a rotary furnace. Results are given. IN a paper by Kalling et al.* the fundamentals of a new process for desulphurization of hot metal using powdered burnt lime as a desulphurizing agent were outlined. The purpose of the present paper is to give a brief account of the way in which this process is being carried out in practice by Surahammars Bruks AB, Sweden, and of the results obtained. + The hot metal from the blast furnace is tapped into a ladle of 15 tons capacity and transferred to a rotary furnace, a simplified drawing of which is given in Fig. 1. The rotary furnace has a total length of about 160 in. and an outside diameter of the rings of about 130 in. The furnace is in a horizontal position, with its rings placed on four rollers, and can be rotated by a driving mechanism at various speeds of up to 34 rpm. The rotary furnace and its driving mechanism were designed and constructed at Surahammar. The hot metal is charged into the rotary furnace through the opening to the left in Fig. 1. See Fig. 2. An addition is then made to the furnace consisting of finely ground burnt lime amounting to 2 pct of the weight of the hot metal as well as 0.5 pct of coke breeze. After the additions are made, the furnace is sealed to the atmosphere by means of two lids and set in rotary motion at a rate of 34 rpm. The sulphur in the hot metal is rapidly absorbed by the lime added, the time of treatment needed is normally 30 min. The process is then stopped, the lid is removed, and the furnace is lifted up by a crane and used as a tilting ladle for pouring the metal into the pig-iron molds, Fig. 3. Process Metallurgy The hot metal charged into the rotary furnace has a composition which usually lies within the following limits: C, 3.70 to 4.10 pct; Si, 0.80 to 1.80; Mn, 0.40 to 0.80; P, 0.025 to 0.030; and S, 0.060 to 0.200. Figs. 4 and 5 give examples of the changes in hot metal composition taking place during the treatment in the rotary furnace. As will be seen from the diagrams, the sulphur content of the metal decreases very rapidly during the first 10 min of treatment from about 0.100 to about 0.020 pct S. During the following 20 min, the sulphur content goes down slowly to about 0.005 pct S. The carbon and silicon contents of the metal decrease by about 0.10 pct each during the treatment. The manganese and phosphorus contents remain unchanged. Thus, if the process is started with an iron of the composition given above, the finishing composition of the metal usually lies within the following limits: C, 3.60 to 4.00 pct; Si, 0.70 to 1.70; Mn, 0.40 to 0.80; P, 0.025 to 0.030; and S, 0.002 to 0.020. Several disastrous and a great number of near-disastrous mine fires have been started by igniting the combustible conductor insulation and outer covering of trailing cables. Those who have had experience in fighting such fires know that they are extremely difficult to combat and extinguish owing to the irritating and noxious gases, fumes and vapors evolved from evaporation, distillation and combustion of the sundry compounds used in the construction of cables. When electric-motor-driven coal-cutting machines were first introduced in coal mines, the electricity was transmitted to the apparatus by two single-conductor trailing cables. Later, two-conductor parallel and concentric types were developed. These early cables were made with the materials available at that time with relatively little thought given to using new materials or utilizing the old to the best advantage. The copper conductors were stranded to give flexibility, but there were too few strands and the method of laying them was such that they did not endure well the stresses of twisting and pulling, to which trailing cables used in mines are usually subjected. The rubber insulating compounds used were not satisfactory in resisting water, high temperature, and the crushing stresses encountered in mine service. The outer coverings were cotton or jute braids saturated with tars or asphalts having relatively no abrasive resistance. In fact, the only consideration given to trailing cable design because of its extremely short life, was to construct it at the lowest possible cost. With increased electrification and mechanization, more serious problems were encountered. Cables used in mines were exposed to more severe conditions than in any other industry. The excessive overload currents, poor heat dissipation, severe abrasion, crushing loads from falling material, runovers, and any of the other things that tend to destroy cable, called for vast improvement in trailing cable design for mine use. About 1918, one manufacturer who recognized the need for improving the toughness of cables in order to obtain greater safety and longer life, developed a special rope-stranded conductor, a superior rubber insulation compound and a tough rubber sheath or jacket compound. As a result of this type of construction, broken conductor strands were practically eliminated, the insulating material withstood high temperature without undue disintegration, and the jacket, similar to that used for automobile tire tread, had high abrasion resistance, high tear resistance, and was waterproof. While the initial cost of these cables was higher than the jute-filled braided types, this disadvantage was more than offset by increased safety and longer service. Cables with these improved characteristics were first installed in mines in 1920. Since 1930, the use of braided trailing cables in coal mines has been almost completely supplanted by the more superior types, employing high-grade rubber compounds for insulation and sheath. SINCE Noah pitched his ark within and without with pitch, the use of asphalt in human endeavor has been increasing-for Noah's pitch was asphalt. Asphalt is a bituminous material found in nature, either pure or admixed with smaller or greater quanti-ties of mineral and non-mineral materials, or obtained by the refining of crude asphaltic-base petroleum under proper methods of control. Native or "natural" asphalts are scattered through-out the world, though the commercial value of the various deposits varies greatly, depending upon both their accessibility and magnitude and the quality of the material found. It is an acknowledged fact that such asphalts have been produced through natural causes by practically the same application of tempera-ture and pressure as are used in the modern refining of crude asphaltic-base petroleum. The best known of all the native asphalt deposits are those of Trinidad Lake in the Island of Trinidad, British West Indies, and of Bermudez Lake in Vene-zuela. Asphalt from Trinidad Lake, after refining to remove organic and some inorganic diluents, contains approximately 35 per cent, of inorganic residue, and the asphalt thus produced must be fluxed with lighter asphaltic or semi-asphaltic base oil to make it com-mercially utilizable. The refined asphalt obtained from the Bermudez Lake deposit contains from 4 to 6 per cent. of inorganic material which cannot be removed. This asphalt, also, must be fluxed to produce com-mercial products. Small quantities of similar materials are available in other locations. The best pure native asphalt' is known as. gilsonite and is mined in com-mercial quantities in the State of Utah. In numerous places in the United States, particularly Oklahoma and Kentucky, there are deposits of sand¬stone and limestone impregnated with bitumen, which are known as rock asphalts. These rock asphalts may be used, particularly in the paving industry, either as found or by slight fluxing; from some deposits the asphalt is extracted and marketed commercially.

The solubility of chromium in liquid silver and that of molybdenum and tungsten in liquid tin have been determined by equilibrating Ike Liquid in a crucible of the solule metal. Generally the weight of solute in solulion was delermined both chemically and from crucible weight losses. The resulting weight percent solubilily of chromium in silver as a function of absolule temperature T is given by log w = -6660/T + 4.02 in the range 960° to 1445°C, and that of molybdenlttrl in tin by log w = —5050/T + 1. 79 in the range 1200° to 2200°C. The values appear unaffected by minor changes in solute composition. Calculations aye made of the parlial molar heal and excess entropy of mixing. The estimated solubility of tungsten in tin is 0.001 pct at 2000°C. Evidence is presented that molybdenwm dissolves in tin without compound for mation and that tungsten and tin form W10Sn. RECENT developments in coatings, heat transfer, and brazing require a knowledge of equilibrium solubilities in a variety of systems at elevated temperatures. Of particular interest are solid-liquid interactions in metal systems involving dilute solutions. This investigation was undertaken since little is known about the phase relations or solubility of chromium in liquid silver or of molybdenum and tungsten in liquid tin.1,2 EXPERIMENTAL WORK As indicated in Table I, high-purity metals or those of known impurity levels were used. Crucibles were machined from chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten bar stock 1.3 cm diam and 2.2 cm long. Chromium rod was prepared by arc melting and extruding iodide process crystals.3 The five chromium impurity alloys were in the form of 0.6-cm-diam swaged rod. A Cr-0.06N* alloy was prepared by exposure to NH3 at 1150°C in a closed quartz capsule for 24 hr. Because significant nitrogen was lost during annealing in argon at 1600°C,4 the estimated level was 0.01 pct N. Chromium and Mo,W crucibles were outgassed at 1200" and 1600°C, respectively, at 3 X 10-5 mm. The solvent was placed In crucibles of the solute metal- 6 g Ag in chromium, 0.4 g Ag in the five chromium impurity alloys, and 4 g Sn in Mo,W crucibles. The silver and tin series were outgassed at 900" and 110O°C, respectively, and held at the desired solution temperature in a tantalum resistance furnace under 1.05 atm 99.995 pct Ar. An equilibration time of 0.5 to 1 hr was chosen since 0.3-, I-, and 4-hr anneals at 1235°C for Cr-Ag yielded similar results. Temperatures were measured optically to +10°C under essentially black body conditions which were checked against the melting point of silver. The Cr-Ag and Mo-Sn,W-Sn series were respectively equilibrated at 990° to 1400°C and 1200" to 2000°C. Vaporization losses were generally held to <1 pct by the argon. In the 1800" and 2000°C anneals for 0.5 hr, the crucibles were placed in tightly sealed tantalum cans which kept tin losses to <5 pct. After the anneals, the specimens were furnace-cooled. One anneal was made on small Mo-0.02 C, Mo-0.5Ti-0.lZr, and tungsten crucibles containing tin at 2200°C. The metals were sealed in an electron-beam-welded tantalum can of minimum volume. After the anneal, tin was still present in each crucible, none of which was severely attacked. After equilibration, the saturated solvent metal was selectively removed from the crucible by acid leaching. Weight losses sustained by the crucibles were determined from the initial weight minus the final blank-corrected weight after acid leaching. Chemical analyses were performed on some of the samples. Hot 1:l HNO3-H2O removed silver from chromium with the blank running <0.1 mg or <0.002 pct on measured solubility. Tin was removed from molybdenum and tungsten by hot concentrated HC1 with the respective blanks amounting to -0.004 and -0.0004 pct in the presence of tin. The insoluble residues were weighed and checked for composition. The leaching solutions contained traces of the solute metals which were analyzed by colorimetric methods, Diphenyl Carbazide for chromium, Thiocyanate for molybdenum, and Dithiol for tungsten. The total of the two percentages found from the residue and leaching solution minus the blank gave the desired solubility values. On the basis of annealing empty molybdenum and tungsten crucibles, weight losses due to MoO3 or WO3 volatilization were found to be generally 10.4 mg and affect measured solubilities by <0.01pct. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Chromium-Silver . Since no intermediate compounds are reported to form in the Cr-An system,&apos; crucible weight losses and chemical analysis of the entire melt should provide reliable measures of the chromium in solution. Values obtained by the two methods are in agreement as shown by the results for unalloyed chromium in Table II and plotted in Fig. 1. Furthermore, the results are consistent with those previously determined by melting equilibrated silver out of the crucible and analyzing calorimetrically for chromium.&apos; On the basis of limited thermal analysis data, the solubility of chromium in silver has been quoted as 8 pct at the monotectic temperature of -1445°C.1 This investigation indicates an extrapolated solubility of 1.38 pct which is believed to be more reliable. IT is rather the general belief that acidified, solutions of ferrous salts are readily oxidized when in contact with air, and often elaborate pre-cautions are taken to prevent it. This, however, is not the case and several statements may be found in the literature expressing surprise at the extreme slowness with which oxidation takes place when air or oxygen is bubbled through such a solution. Thus C. Baskerville and R. Stevenson1 "observed with surprise" that no oxidation apparently took place, as shown by titration with 0.5 N KMnO4, when a stream of air was passed for 3 hr. through an acidified solution of ferrous ammonium sulfate or ferrous sulfate. The same authors state that even the presence of salts such as. cobalt, chromium, copper, manganese, etc., which usually act as oxygen carriers, had "no effect upon the oxidation as was observed by passing air for 3 hr.. through solutions of Mohr&apos;s salt acidified with sulfuric acid." While this statement will bee proved further on to be at least partly incorrect the slowness of the oxidation of ferrous salts alone has been previously established by McBain.2 His investigation also showed that the rate of oxidation increases markedly with an increase in the concentration of ferrous sulfate as well as that of oxygen; the concentration of free acid had a comparatively small influence, which in the case of sulfuric acid was to retard slightly the rate of reaction. More recently R. Thomas and E. T. Williams3 investigated the catalytic effect of nitric oxide on the oxidation of ferrous salts, which had been earlier patented by McCulloch.4 They found that the probable mechanism of the catalytic action was the oscillation of the catalyst between two stages of oxidation and its interaction alternately with the oxygen and the ferrous iron.

The Committee on Technical Nomenclature, of which John T. Faig, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Cincinnati, is Chairman, appointed by the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education, has recently issued a report advocating uniformity in the use of symbols to designate engineering and mathematical terms: The selection of the symbols was based upon a canvas of a considerable number of engineers, editors of engineering papers, and professors of engineering throughout the United States. IT is rather the general belief that acidified solutions of ferrous salts are readily oxidized when in contact with air, and often elaborate pre-cautions are taken to prevent it. This, however, is not the case and several statements may be found in the literature expressing surprise at the extreme slowness with which oxidation takes place when air or oxygen is bubbled through such a solution. Thus C. Baskerville and R. Stevenson1 "observed with surprise" that no. oxidation apparently took place, as shown by titration with 0.5 N KMnO4, when a stream of air was passed for 3 hr. through an acidified solution of ferrous ammonium sulfate or ferrous sulfate. The same authors state that even the presence of salts such as cobalt, chromium, copper, manganese, etc., which usually act as oxygen carriers, had "no effect upon the oxidation as was observed by, passing air for 3 hr. through solutions of Mohr&apos;s salt acidified with sulfuric acid." While this statement will be proved further on to be at least partly incorrect the slowness of the oxidation of ferrous salts alone has been previously established by McBain.2. His investigation also showed that the rate of oxidation increases markedly with an increase in the concentration of ferrous sulfate as well as that of oxygen; the concentration of free acid had a comparatively small influence, which in the case of sulfuric acid was to retard slightly the rate of reaction. More recently R. Thomas and E. T. Williams3 investigated the catalytic effect of nitric oxide on the oxidation of ferrous salts, which had been earlier patented by McCulloch.4 They found that the probable mechanism of the catalytic action was the oscillation of the catalyst between two stages of oxidation and its interaction alternately with the oxygen and the ferrous iron.

(Butte. Meeting, August, 1913.). IN metallurgical circles it is known widely, but somewhat vaguely, that the ease of: reduction of metallic oxides depends largely on the way they have been prepared. It is likewise known that different forms of carbon have different and greatly varying reducing powers. It is the purpose of this paper to show somewhat more definitely and scientifically these facts. Some years ago the writer published an account of pyrometric determinations of the reduction- temperature of zinc oxides variously prepared and of several kinds.1 In said paper it was shown that the temperature it which zinc oxide evolves zinc according to the equation Zn0. +&apos; C = Zn + CO depends upon the ;nature of:., the.&apos; two reacting bodies. The determinations bad a range of accuracy of from 2° to. 6° C.,whereas differences were found to. amount to an extreme. of 90° C. :.86 the differences are real ones and must have, definite cause. The equation of boiling water, (H20)4 = 4 (H2O) has a fixed temperature for equilibrium of 100° C. at 760 mm. pressure. , In general, all equations. reacting e in .the liquid or the gaseous phase have-well-defined constant physical conditions which govern the equilibrium point and reaction velocities. In a reaction where we have one or more solid phases, the temperature conditions requisite for the unbalancing of the stable system are found to vary. These variations are due to the fact that in a solid there is a very complex molecule and it is not, a question solely of the tearing away of two interlocked atoms, but also of the destruction of a complex molecule containing hundreds, or possibly thousands, of smaller molecules.

Determination of the Hf-C phase diagram was conducted primarily by metallographic and X-ray diffraction studies on appropriate alloys. The only intermediate phase observed in this binary system was HfC. This phase was found to be homogeneous between 34.0 and 48.0 at. pct C at 2200°c and between 36.0 and 49.3 at. pct C at 3150°C. The lattice-parameter variation was also determined for HfCI-, compositions prepared at 2200° and 3150°C. The most most refractory composition, with a melting point of 3830°c, was established at 47.5 at. pct C from melting-point data. Solidus temperatures of 2240&apos; and 3150°C occur on the high-kafnium and high-carbon sides of the monocarbide, respectively. The invariant point between HfC and carbon is located at 66.0 at. pct C, whereas the 2240°C solidus corresponds to the peritectic temperature at which hafnium is formed from HfC and hafnium-rick liquid. Hafnium has a melting temperature of 2208°C and is capable of taking carbon into solution to the extent of 10.5 at. pct at this temperature. ALTHOUGH the Hf-C phase diagram has not been previously evaluated experimentally in its entirety, the belief has been that the general configuration would resemble the chemically similar Group rV carbide systems, Ti-C and Zr-c.&apos; These binaries are characterized by a single carbide phase with a simple NaC1-type structure which is maintained over wide compositional ranges. This family of carbides has high thermal stability that increases substantially as the atomic number of the metal component increases. This trend characterizes HfC as one of the highest melting materials. According to Agte and Alterthum,2 the melting point for this monocarbide is 3890°C, a value that has been quoted quite extensively for the past several decades. Recently, in repeating the work of Agte and Alter-thum, Adams and Beall3 determined the melting point of HfC to be 3895°C. A significant departure from the commonly accepted version of the Hf-C system was reported by Avarbe and his coworkers,4 who proposed that there is an extreme stabilization of a hafnium in a narrow field to 2820°C, above which it melts peritectically to form HfC and liquid. Their study was also concerned with the melting temperature of various HfCI-, compositions, but the peak melting point was taken from the work of Agte and Alterthum. Avarbe and his associates were not concerned with the high-carbon region of the system. However, three widely varying temperatures have been reported for the HfC-C solidus by other investigators. Cotter and Kohn5 observed approximately 2800°C; Portnoy et al.&apos; reported 3260°C; and, more recently, Krikorian7 indicated 2915°C. Equally as uncertain is the solidus between hafnium and HfC. As noted above, Avarbe et al. report a peritectic temperature of 2820°C, Krikorian7 measured 2150°C, and Benesovsky and Rudy&apos; estimated 2000°C on their diagram. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The starting materials for this study consisted of reactor-grade hafnium hydride obtained from Fair-mount Chemical Co., Newark, N.J., hafnium carbide supplied by Wah Chang Corp., Albany, Ore., and Union Carbide spectroscopic-grade graphite, SP-1. The graphite analysis indicated impurities at levels of only 0.5 ppm or less. According to the suppliers, the hydride and carbide contained the typical impurities listed in Table I. The samples required for these studies were prepared by dry blending either graphite and hafnium hydride or hafnium hydride and hafnium carbide powders for approximately 5 min in a "Spex Mixer Mill". Oxidation experiments were conducted above 600°C to investigate the oxidation products formed on the surface of MoSi2. Results are presented which indicate that minor iron impurities play a key role in the oxidation behavior of MoSi2 above 600 °C. Based on considerations of the crystal chemistry of the oxidation products, MoSi2 with rhenium and iron additions was found to be resistant to oxidation in the pesting temperature range. AS early as 1914, Honigschmidtl observed that some silicides of molybdenum exhibited high resistance to oxidation at elevated temperatures. This fact did not arouse much interest until 1950, when Kieffer and cerwenka2 examined this property in more detail. They found that Mo-Si alloys with approximately 70 pct Mo (by weight) could be heated to 1600°C in an oxidizing atmosphere without any significant damage. The surface was found to be protected by the formation of an extremely thin silica glass layer which had no tendency to spa11 during subsequent thermal cycling. In 1955, Fitzer3 discovered that even solid bodies made of MoSi2 completely oxidized within a relatively short time when exposed to the air in the temperature range from 300° to 600°C. To describe this phenomenon he proposed the name "molybdenum disilicide &apos;pest&apos; ", clearly analogous to the previously observed "tin plague" ("tin pest") which, however, arises as the result of a phase transformation. Studies performed by Fitzer and, in particular, one published recently by Berkowitz, Blackburn, and Fel-ten,&apos; comprise the most extensive research to date on the pest phenomenon in MoSi2, as far as the fundamen- tal mechanism of the process is concerned. The first of these studies revealed the existence of a crystalline phase which appeared at the surface at 750°C and dissolved in the glassy silica layer at 1150°C. The logical assumption was that this phase was some reaction product of MOO3 and SiO2. The formation of a reaction product of this type seemed probable since it had been mentioned by Glemser and Lutz6 in a paper describing their studies of molybdenum oxides; however, this assumption was later disproved.8 It is our belief that information concerning the exact nature of this crystalline phase may be important for a better understanding of both pesting and the protection mechanism. Therefore, since the only available general description of the pest phenomenon was that of Fitzer, it was decided to reproduce his experiments. These experiments established that, in addition to the "pest" and "nonpest" temperature range, an intermediate region exists between 600" and approximately 650°C. This region is characterized by the appearance of a variable amount of yellow to orange colored crystals. The electron-beam microanalyzer was used to qualitatively determine their composition. Iron and molybdenum were found to be major constituents. This result can be explained based on the following facts: 1) iron, according to literature data,* is the most common impurity in molybdenum powder, and its content can be as high as 0.25 pct; 2) technical silicon powder usually contains iron; 3) steel ball mills are often used for the crushing and grinding of MoSi2. In order to clarify the exact role of iron, it was deliberately added to a stoichiometric mixture of molybdenum and silicon. The observed results corroborated the previous experiment, proving that iron (probably as some silicide phase) concentrates along the grain boundaries. Poly crystalline silver chloride specimens having different micro structures were prepared by extruding monocrystals or precompressed powder at varying temperatures. Extrusion at high temperature (370°C) produced a Fully recrystallized equi-axed material which was brittle and fractured by simple cleavage below its transition temperature (60°C for notched specimens). Extrusion at low temperatures (down to -196°C) produced an extremely tough cold-worked material with grains elongated in the extrusion direction. This material fractured below its transition temperature (which varied from —20" to —200°C) by an intergranular mode. It is concluded that cold work increases the resistance to transgranular cleavage. Fracture is then de-flected to propagate intergranularly ouer surfaces making an angle with the tensile axis with a corresponding improvement in notch toughness. This deflection is greater for extruded powder than for extruded monocrystals because of the extremely elongated grain shape. PREVIOUS work1,&apos; on the fracture properties of fully recrystallized silver chloride under notch impact conditions has indicated that the fracture behavior is rather invariant. Thus polycrystalline materials originating from a number of sources ranging from relatively pure Harshaw single crystals to commercial-purity powder and prepared by hot extrusion at 370°C all fracture by simple cleavage with a ductile-brittle transition at 60°C, see Fig. 1. This behavior is also typical for fully annealed single crystals and appears to be fundamental to silver chloride for the particular loading conditions and notch configuration adopted. One way in which this characteristic fracture behavior can be modified is by the dispersion of alumina particles in the silver chloride matrix.&apos; Then, particularly when the alumina particles are in the shape of spheres, the duc tile-brittle transition is much less sharply defined and occurs over a range of temperature, the transition temperature is lowered considerably and the fracture mode changes from simple cleavage to a fibrous or shear mode. The reason for this change is believed to be partly due to the nucleation of cavities in the region of the dispersed alumina particles which influences the state of stress locally and the distribution of plastic constraint at the root of the notch. It is emphasized however that this is not the sole factor responsible for the increase in toughness. In extruded materials it is reasonable to expect that the resultant grain size, texture, and the residual cold work will be influenced by the presence of a dispersed phase. The present experiments were initially designed to determine the extent to which cold work influenced the fundamental ductile-brittle transition temperature and fracture mode of silver chloride. They were stimulated by the discovery that silver chloride could be extruded at temperatures as low as -25°C when commercial-purity powder was used and as low as -196°C when single crystals were used. This working temperature was far below that previously used (370°C) and it was found that such extruded material was exceedingly tough. The reasons for the enhanced toughness and its relation to the previous work on silver chloride-alumina compacts will be discussed. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Materials Used. I HAVE long been aware that ferruginous copper furnace slags if fused in the electric arc will yield metallic iron containing copper, and in order to confirm this knowledge, and to obtain further information of the behavior of such slags in the high temperature and reducing conditions of the electric furnace, a number of samples of slag were fused in an experimental electric furnace. The results obtained, given in Table I., show that a very large amount of metallic iron was produced, and that this iron carried with it practically all the copper, gold, and silver, and more than 50 per cent. of the sulphur, of the original slag. The metallic buttons formed in the electric furnace were clean, hard, but not brittle.

FROM the old-fashioned " grab-sample " to the modern timing- . device, which takes a machine-sample with mathematical precision, there is a wide gap which was only crossed&apos; by many years of toil and unremitting endeavor. Even to-day, notwithstanding the advancement in the art, "grab-sampling" is still practiced-sometimes to afford the unscrupulous mine-promoter a basis for fairy-tales with which to entrap the too-gullible investor, and often by milling and smelting companies to determine the amount of moisture in custom-ores. The latter practice is almost as reprehensible as the former, and it causes more trouble and ill-feeling between seller and buyer than all other factors put together. No reputable concern to-day would think of attempting to determine by grab-sampling the amount of gold, silver, lead, or copper contained in an ore, and yet many buyers expect the miner to accept the results of grab-sampling in the determination of the amount of water contained in the ore, forgetting that accurate results are just as necessary here as in the determination of the metals, because the result determines the percentage of weight of the ore which shall be excluded and considered to have no value whatever. Samples for the determination of moisture should be taken with as great care as samples for the determination of. metallic content, and in order to avoid the extra expense of a separate operation moisture-samples should be taken from the sample-safe. As the sample reaches the sample-bin in a smaller stream and by a more circuitous route than the "reject" travels in its path to the outgoing car, it loses more moisture en route, and a constant should be added to compensate for this difference. Carefully-conducted experiments have shown that the difference in loss of moisture between the two routes does not exceed 10 per cent. in summer and 7 per cent.. in winter. For instance,
