THE death of Sir Lowthian Bell removes almost the last of the group of heroic leaders who made their age and ours the Age of Steel-a group which his luster and the luster of his peers, Bessemer, Siemens and Tunner, made one of the most brilliant, perhaps even the most brilliant, in the annals of industry. Born on February 15th, 1816, in Newcastle-on-Tyne, he was the eldest son of Thomas Bell, an alderman of Newcastle, and of his wife Catherine Lowthian of Newbiggin, near Carlisle, in Cumberland, and was christened Isaac Lowthian, the name of his maternal grandfather. His father was born about 1788, and came in 1808 from Newbiggin to Newcastle, where he entered the office of the Cumbrian firm of Losh and Company, manufacturers of alkali and wrought-iron, at the Walker Iron and Alkali Works, at Walker, Dear Newcastle. Young Isaac Lowthian Bell was educated at Dr. Bruce's school in Newcastle, whence he went to Germany and Denmark, learning there German and Danish. On his return he studied at Edinburgh University, and then at the Sorboune in Paris. As a student he already showed the remarkable character and application which later gained him such distinction. After studying the manufacture of alkali near Marseilles, he returned, and when about twenty years old (A.D. 1836) was employed in his father's firm, then called Losh, Wilson, and Bell. After spending a year in their Newcastle offices, and after visiting the important iron-making districts of France, Germany, Poland, and Austria, he took charge of their rolling-mills at Walker, and profited so well by his opportunities, and especially by the teachings of his father and of Mr. John Vaughan (later one of the founders of the great firm of Bolckow, Vaughan & Co.), that he was made manager of the Walker works in or about

THE Sub-province of Benguet is in the North Central part of the Island of Luzon. Baguio, the capital, is situated on a piateau 5000 ft. above sea level, and is the main health resort of the Philippines. It is rapidly becoming the favorite resort for the China Coast as well, and has many miles of beautiful, curving drives with nearly every pine-covered knoll surmounted by a summer home. The United States Army has a recreation post here, known as Camp John Hay, with a well-equipped hospital, and there is a Country Club with a good golf course adjacent. The weather during the winter months and until late spring is ideal. The business center consists mainly of Chinese and Japanese stores, several hotels, and a large public market, in which are displayed all of the vegetables of the temperate zone, which are flown near Baguio, and many tropical and other products brought up from below. This district is reached from the Coastal Plain either by the old Benguet road built in 1904 by the United States Government, or by the Naguilian road, built some years later. The former is now a toll road, with a line of stages operating over it to and from Des Mortes in connection with the government-owned rail- road. Auto travel from Manila is also along this road, the trip from Manila to Baguio requiring about seven hours, following up the great valley north of Manila for nearly 150 miles to the lower end of the Benguet road, and thence to Baguio, 25 miles. This is an interesting, scenic trip; the road is especially famous for the zig zags where it climbs out of the canyon of the Bued River to the plateau. In the September number of the National Geographic Magazine, a fine aerial picture of this road, as well as of other interesting points in various parts of the Philippines, appears. Freight for the district is taken in mainly over the Naguilian road connecting with the railroad at Bauang. This route follows the ridges of the mountain slope with broad vistas and views of the coast.

In 1914, the officials of the Brundred Oil Corpn., faced with the problem of introducing new methods to increase production in the old and nearly depleted pools of Venango County, became interested in the Smith-Dunn (Marietta) process which was at that time being tried out in southeastern Ohio and which was already yielding very encouraging results. A license to use the process in Pennsylvania was secured from the owners of the patents. These patents were later declared invalid. The method was first used in Pennsylvania on a property consisting of about 434 acres, of which 300 are productive, at Hamilton Corners, 15 miles northwest of Oil City, in Cherry Tree and Oakland Townships, Venango County. The producing horizon is the First Sand of the Venango Group. A small oil pool was opened up in this vicinity in 1904. By July, 1916, when the compressed air was first introduced to restore pressure, the production had dropped to a point where it was no longer possible to continue profitable operation. From that time until March, 1927, over 100,000 bbl. of oil have been recovered from the tract. The property is being operated at present by the Brundred Oil Corpn. and LUX. The 1926 production, amounting to 10,650 bbl., was only 400 bbl. short of the maximum reached during any year of the 10-year period that the process has been in operation. Inasmuch as the Hamilton Corners pool is the first one in Pennsylvania in which the Marietta process was tried out, and the one in which it has been longest in continuous operation, considerable interest attaches to the results obtained. Through the courtesy of H. D. Brown and W. J. Brundred, officials of the Brundred Oil Corpn., all their data on this operation were made available to the writer in connection with an investigation of rejuvenation methods in the State for the Pennsylvania Geological Survey. Maintaining smooth haulage roads is a key to significant cost savings at Kennecott Copper Corp.'s Bing- ham Canyon copper mine, located near Salt Lake City, Utah. The truck operations section of the mine moves an estimated 300,000 tpd of waste plus some ore to maintain a balanced production cycle. A three-year truck replacement program has produced a dramatic new look in both size and capacity of the truck fleet. Currently there are 95 haulage trucks in the Bingham fleet with capacities up to 150 t. The trend towards the larger haulage units places greater importance on overall truck availability. The impact of a 150-t truck being out of service is far more critical than with the former 65 or 85-t units.

REPUBLIC STEEL CORP. and Armco Steel Corp. have joined in a $160,000,000 project for the production of iron ore from Taconite in the Lake Superior mining region. The two companies announced acquisition in equal shares of 100 pct ownership of the stock of Reserve Mining Co., which controls a vast deposit of magnetic Taconite iron ore on the eastern end of the Mesabi range in Minnesota. Through Reserve Mining the two companies will build a plant for manufacturing high grade ore from Taconite near Beaver Bay on the north shore of Lake Superior. The first announcement calls for about a $60,000,000 plant which will be built as soon as plans are completed and will have an annual capacity of about 2,500,000 tons of iron ore pellets. Longer range development plans call for future expansion of the plant to provide an annual capacity of 10,000,000 tons. This will amount to an additional investment of

Application of the conventional depletion drive calculation methods to volatile oil reservoirs results in erroneous estimates of ultimate recovery. In view of the increasing number and importance of volatile oil reservoirs, a special technique has been developed which will result in more realistic predictions using laboratory data obtained from reservoir fluid studies of a specific type. The experimental data are designed to permit continuous material accounting and, therefrom, provide the hy-clrocarbon composition of both the flowing oil and gas phases. The resultant well-stream composition data are then used directly in surface recovery calculations utilizing equilibrium ratios. A step by step procedure, specifically designed for routine use by the practicing reservoir engineer, is presented in an appendix. An actual study performed on a deep Mid-Continent reservoir is used ay an il-lustrathe example. INTRODUCTION It has been a practice for many years to utilize the conventional ma- terial balance methods in conjunction with relative permeability concepts for the prediction of recovery from solution gas drive reservoirs.' Those who have performed such calculations recognize that compromises of several types are necessary in order to reduce the calculations to a reasonable degree of complexity. The most serious assumption involved results from the necessity of treating the produced oil and gas as separate fluids, independent of each other in their behavior. It is further assumed that the gas which is evolved in the reservoir as a result of pressure decline will not yield liquid upon the reduction of pressure and temperature resulting from production through surface equipment. Although these shortcomings have been recognized,' it has been difficult to attempt refinement of calculation procedures since the laboratory data available normally were not of the proper type or extent to permit such calculations. Three general procedures have been available for depletion drive calculations when laboratory fluid data are of the conventional type. Differential Procedure The most simple, and most widely used, method requires use of the formation volume factor and gas sol- ubility data obtained from a differential liberation performed at reservoir temperature. This procedure ignores the differences existing between the fluid behavior in the reservoir and its behavior as it is produced through surface separation equipment. The errors introduced are not serious when dealing with very low volatility fluids and this method may be utilized if the laboratory data indicate only slight differences between the differential data and the flash data obtained from separator tests. Modified Differential Procedure This method was developed when it became apparent that medium volatility fluids evidenced a wide difference between the flash and differential data. The differential data are adjusted by changing from a residual oil basis to a stock tank oil basis. All that is required is multiplication of the differential data by the ratio of residual oil to stock tank oil relative volumes existing for the original reservoir fluid at the determined saturation pressure. This procedure generally results in increased calculated ul-timate recovery; however, such results should be viewed critically. INDEPENDENTLY of the recognized chemical reactions involved in the production of metallic zinc, the process is affected by physical conditions in efficiency, and by commercial as well as technical economy. To offer some observations concerning these conditions is the purpose of the present paper. Among the important elements of this problem is the physical nature of the particles constituting the mass of zinc oxide to be reduced. This may be the result, either of the manner of the original deposition of the mineral, or of the treatment to which it has been subjected in the roasting-furnace. The physical character of the reducing-agent is another important factor, since the carbon of some coals is much more active in reduction than that of others. The degree of fineness, whether of ore or coal, or both, likewise plays a significant part. These factors, together with the physical admixture of foreign substances with the ore, may give rise also to chemical "side-reactions," sometimes hindering or retarding, and sometimes accelerating, the reduction. Finally, thermal conditions, including the relative conductivity of the materials, deserve to be taken into account. In firing a furnace with retorts charged with a mixture of roasted ore and coal, the first reaction is naturally the boiling-off of the contained water ; the next is the distillation of the light hydrocarbons from the coal; the next is the reduction of the iron oxide to protoxide and sub-oxide successively, and then to metallic sponge; and the final reaction is the reduction of the zinc oxide in the ore by the carbon to metallic zinc. The physical properties, chemical behavior under thermal treatment, and fertilizer value of fluorine-containing pseudowavellite (hydrous calcium aluminum phosphate) that occurs as phosphate clay admixed with quartz sand in an extensive deposit near Bartow, Fla., were determined by experiments in laboratory, pilot-plant, and greenhouse. When the mineral was heated at 500°C, 80 pct of the phosphorus became citrate soluble. The heated product, however, deteriorates markedly under moist conditions such as obtain in the soil.

AT the McGill concentrator of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co., all flotation operations have been carried out in Forrester cells since November, 1926. In respect to cost of operation, the new cell has proved to be superior to the Callow, which it supplanted, and its incorporation in the flow sheet has resulted in a marked improvement in the metallurgy. Before citing the advantages of the new machine over the old, it should be explained that the Forrester has not only replaced the Callow, but it has made possible the elimination of a number of tables as well. When Callow cells were in use, table concentration preceded flotation. The ball mill pulp was elevated, by means of air lifts, to roughing Wilfley tables situated two floors directly above the flotation floor. On an intermediate floor were additional tables which cleaned the concentrate from those above. The finished table concentrate constituted approximately 60 per cent. of the total mill production, and contained about 40 per cent. of the recovered copper. The table tailings were returned to the classifiers, the overflow from which went to the flotation cells and the oversize to the ball mills. As soon as the Forrester cells were installed, this tabling operation was discontinued. The ball mill pulp now discharges into the classifiers direct, without the intermediate tabling. It was impracticable to employ the present flow sheet when Callow cells were in use, for the reason that unless the greater part of the heavy mineral was first removed, it accumulated on the mats and adversely affected the flotation operation. By tabling ahead of flotation, it was practicable to maintain the concentrator at 10 to 20 per cent. greater capacity (depending up on the pyrite content of the ore) than was possible by flotation alone. This was due to the necessity for finer grinding in the latter case. Even though the table concentrates contained only 6 to 8 per cent. copper con- tent, the low smelting costs made it advantageous to operate at high mill capacity, at the cost of low grade of product. S ULFURIC acid made in the United States during the last four years has averaged approximately 7,000,000 tons of 50" B6 acid a year. This is double the production of the year 1913. About 66 per cent of the acid is made from sulfur, 16 per cent from pyrite, 13 per cent at copper, lead, and zinc smelters, and the remainder from miscellaneous sources it her the chamber process or the contact process, (at some plants both) is used. In 1923, the contact process accounted for nearly 30 per cent of all the sulfuric acid made in this country and since then it has been increasingly employed. It was first introduced here in 1898, and has always .proved less expensive than the chamber process for the manufacture of .acid of high concentration and purity, but the latter produces acid of low strength suitable for many industries.

High strength, high-conductivity copper-base alloys have found considerable use in the resistance welding and electrical industry in the form of castings, forgings, or wrought products. There are a number of parts utilized by these industries which would lend themselves to manufacture by powder metallurgical methods provided the required physical and electrical properties are obtainable with such methods. The present paper describes the results of a study of certain copper-base powder metallurgical products susceptible to precipitation hardening. Copper Powders The general types of commercially available copper powders are flake, spherical and electrolytic. Micrographs of these three types are shown in Figs. I, 2 and 3. The difference in particle shape is pronounced and obvious. The type of powder used is determined, or at least indicated, by the final properties desired in the finished article. The type of powder employed during the present investigation was electrolytic powder shown in Fig. 3, and was chosen because of its particular adaptability to the work described in this Paper. The screen and chemical analyses of this powder are shown in Table I. In the preparation of compacts of high electrical conductivity, the purity of the copper powder is of importance in addition to other factors, such as density and the state of internal stresses. These variables were studied briefly by pressing a number of compacts to various pressed densities, sintering them for one hour in hydrogen at 975OC and repressing. The size of the finished compacts was 1/4, by % by 8 in. The time interval from the application to the termination of pressure was approximately 20 sec. Some of the compacts were annealed before testing. The results are listed in Figs. 4 to 8, inclusive. In Fig. 4 the curves of pressed density vs. compacting pressure, and sintered density versus compacting pressure show the typical direct relationship of pressure and density. Compacting pressures exceeding about 30 tons per sq. in. result fiequently in expansion during sintering for the type of powder used. Fig. 5 indicates that variations in the initial pressed density within the range of about 5 to 6 grams per c, c., affect only slightly the pressure required to obtain a

SEVERAL notable papers, and free discussion on many controversial subjects, marked the various sessions of the Petroleum Division at the annual meeting. The Division first convened on Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 16, and wound up with a dinner and technical meeting on Thursday night. H. C. Fowler presided at the opening session, which was devoted to problems of engineering research and production engineering. Joseph Chalmers abstracted his paper on the flow of air and gas through porous media, in the preparation of which E. L Rawlins and D. B. Talia-ferro contributed. G. H. Fancher told how much he and his associates at Pennsylvania State College were interested in this field, and described the problems they had met in conducting test work. He made a plea for standardization of testing methods. Mr. Fowler then read an abstract of written discussion by Professor Barb, which was followed by discussion by Dr. Fancher and Mr. Chalmers of technical points in connection with the Chalmers' paper. H. H. Hill abstracted written discussion from Messrs. Wilde and Moore, of the Humble company. The second paper, by K. B. Nowels, on computing pressure drop in the pipe of flowing oil wells, was abstracted by the author. Messrs. Blair Smith, G. W. Coggeshall, and I. I. Gardescu participated in the discussion, and the chairman abstracted written discussion prepared by Mr. Rawlins. Most of this had to do with the viscosity of gas¬oil mixtures, on which subject Mr. Nowels said there was great need of accurate technical information.

THE orientation relationships resulting from allotropic transforma-tions and the formation of segregate structures in metals and alloys have been the subject of the eight earlier papers in this series1. A brief summary of orientation studies has also been given by Sachs2. A survey of these papers discloses that the factors that determine the orientation relationship of a precipitated phase to its parent solid solution, as Well as the outward form and appearance of the new phase, are not completely understood. It is now evident that crystallographically analogous systems, as a rule, exhibit the same type of Widmanstätten figure and orientation relations, so that useful information is not to be expected from examination of a new alloy involving lattice combinations of which the orientation relationships are already known. Therefore, the determina-tion of the relations existing between lattice types that have not already been studied seems to be the most promising mode of attack upon the problem; both of the systems reported in this paper represent new com-binations of lattice types.

WHILE pure magnesium does not corrode rapidly the presence of even very small quantities of certain other metals accelerates corrosion remarkably. Because magnesium is such an electropositive metal (E° = +2.34 volts)' the presence of substances that permit galvanic activity is extremely undesirable. It is stated that as little as 0.017 pct of iron in magnesium causes a marked increase in the corrosion rate.2 Magnesium and its alloys are commonly melted in iron or steel pots; consequently the commercial metal has the opportunity to pick up iron if it has that tendency. Quantitative data on the solubility of iron in magnesium are of practical as well as of academic interest. Some magnesium alloy castings tend to have large grain size unless suitable treatment is given to the liquid metal just prior to casting. One method of grain refinement consists of "superheating" the metal just prior to casting. "Superheating" is heating to a temperature 100 to 200°C above the casting temperature and holding for a short period of time. Superheated metal has a much finer grain than unsuperheated metal. A satisfactory explanation of this phenomenon has not been forthcoming. One hypothesis attributes the grain refinement in the superheated metal to precipitation of some phase that is miscible at the temperature of superheat but not miscible just below the casting temperature and which is thought to provide nucleating centers for crystallization. This phase, if the foregoing hypothesis is correct, would probably be a metal or an intermetallic compound. Of the metals likely to be found in magnesium alloys, iron is one of the most likely candidates for the role of grain refiner for iron occurs in small quantities in all commercial magnesium and magnesium alloys. A. Beck' states that magnesium, in either the liquid or the solid state, cannot dissolve iron and that iron exists as a finely divided suspension which does not settle out because of its extreme fineness. Beck also presents a micrograph showing a large iron dendrite in magnesium but does not comment on the crystallization of iron from a solution supposed to contain none. It is doubtful that dendrite formation from suspended iron would be possible. This suspension theory is the basis of patents4 covering the removal of iron from magnesium by allowing the iron particles to act as nuclei for the formation of primary magnesium crystals which can be separated by segregation. Also covered by patents is the removal of iron by the addition of another metal to form an intermetallic compound with the iron which, because of its increased particle size, is able to settle out of the molten metal. Here, too, quantitative information on the extent of iron solubility in liquid magnesium is of more than theoretical interest. M. Hansen,5 in his critical collection of the data on binary alloys, states that iron is not soluble in liquid magnesium. W. R. D. Also covered by patents is the removal of iron by the addition of another metal to form an intermetallic compound with the iron which, because of its increased particle size, is able to settle out of the molten metal. Grain boundary grooving has been studied in chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten under a variety of conditions using high vacuum techniques and tantalum -gettered argon. The average surface free energy of solid chromium, and the chromium-liquid silver interface free energy were respectively found to be 2200 ± 250 and 500 i 130 ergs per sq cm from groove formation kinetics and estimates of pertinent volume difffusion coefficients. The results for chromium were unffected by variations in interstitial content ranging from 0.003 to 0.09 pct C, or 0.003 to 0.03 pct O. Surface diffusion is the primary mechanism of groove formation in chromium under 1 atm argon at 1200" to 140O°C, and is essentially unaffected by 0.003 to 0.09 pct C, 0.003 to 0.03 pct O , metastable nitrogen contents up to -0.01 pct, and up to 2 torr Ag vapor. At higher temperatures, the major mechanism is volume diffusion in argon or evaporation-condensation in stutic vacuum. Surface diffusion occurs in molybdenum at 0.5 to 0.96 and in tungsten at 0.5 to 0.9 of the absolute melting tempera -ture by a single mechanism, possibly by the migration of single adatoms or vacancies. Results were slightly affected by up to 23 tory Sn vapor, and in molybdenum were essentially unaffected by 0.5 Ti or carbon in the range 0.002 to 0.02 pct. Volume difffusion through the liquid is the mechanism of groove formation in chromium-liquid silver at 1200" to 1400°C and in molybdenum-, Mo-0.5Ti-, and tungsten-liquid tin at 1200" to 2000°C. The solid-liquid interface free energies involved were estimated from grooving kanetics. WHEN a grain boundary intersects a solid surface, a groove tends to form along the line of intersection at temperatures above about half the absolute melting point (0.5 TM). The groove progressively grows by preferential atomic migration either by diffusion or evaporation. Establishment of a groove angle occurs in accordance with the grain boundary and surface free energies involved. The motivation for groove formation is a reduction in the total surface free energy of the system. This study is a continuation of previous work on thermal grooving of chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten.&apos; The temperature ranges were extended, and the effect of metallic and interstitial impurities was evaluated. The results were such that certain interface free energies and surface self-diffusion coefficients were deduced from the grooving kinetics. EXPERIMENTAL WORK Materials and Preparation. As indicated in Table I, the 0.05-0.08-cm-thick chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten sheet used was nominally 99.99 pct after recrystallization. Extruded chromium rod,&apos; prepared from iodide process crystals, was warm rolled to sheet at 700°C. Sheet of three Cr-0 impurity alloys containing up to 0.03 pct 0 was prepared by warm rolling arc melted, extruded, and swaged rod. Two Cr-C impurity alloys containing up to 0.09 pct C were made by equilibrating unalloyed chromium with a known amount of CH4 for 24 hr at 1150°C in previously evacuated quartz capsules. Chromium containing nominally 0.015 and 0.06 pct N was similarly prepared by equilibration with NH3. The sheet was recrystallized to give a stable grain size about equal to the sheet thickness. Molybdenum and Mo-O.5Ti were recrystallized in a tantalum resistance furnace 1 hr at 1 x lo-5 torr at 2300" and 220O°C, respectively. Tungsten was similarly annealed for 1 hr at 2500°C. Chromium and its impurity alloys were outgassed at 1100°C and recrystallized 1 hr at 1700°C under 1 atm Ar. Except for nitrogen, the impurity content stayed roughly constant. Nitrogen in both alloys was reduced to <0.001 pct. In fact, over 80 pct of the added nitrogen was lost after outgassing at llOO°C and annealing sheet 1 hr at 1300°C in argon in the presence of tantalum. Such a rapid loss can be rationalized since -2 torr N are required for equilibrium with 0.04 pct N in solution,3 while the equilibrium pressure is ~10-5 torr over tantalum at 1300°C.4 The recrystallized sheet was cut into small coupons which were metallographically ground and polished on one side with a minimum of grain boundary relief. The surface roughness was on the order of 0.01 µ. The tin and silver used were nominally 99.999 spec-trographically pure. After being outgassed at 1100°C and equilibrated in a molybdenum crucible for 0.5 hr at 1800°C in argon, the tin contained 3 ppm 0, <0.3 ppm N, and 0.1 ppm H. Following outgassing at 900°C and equilibration in a chromium crucible 1 hr at 1400°C in argon, the gas content of the silver was 1 ppm O, <0.5 ppm N, and 0.3 ppm H. Grooving Under Argon or Vacuum. All specimens were placed in unsealed containers made from rod or sheet of the same alloy, thereby enabling the polished surface to achieve gas-solid equilibrium. The annealing fixtures are shown in Fig. 1. The specimen was placed in a resistance furnace with a tantalum or Ta-10W heating element plus tantalum fixtures or radiation shields. Chromium was outgassed at 1100°C, and molybdenum and tungsten were outgassed at 1900°C to 1 x l0-5 torr or at the grooving temperature, whichever was lower. In vacuum anneals, the specimen was then heated directly to the intended grooving temperature. In argon anneals, 99.996 Ar was admitted

In the course of an extensive investigation of the comparative properties of several types of copper, data were obtained on the cold working and subsequent recovery and recrystallization of the copper. In this paper, relations between the degree of cold work and the course of re-crystallization are developed. In particular, it is shown that the course of recrystallization over long periods of time and at low temperatures can be predicted with reasonable accuracy from short-time high-temperature recrystallization data. Materials Used in The Investigation Three types of copper were used in this investigation; these were tough pitch, OFHC, and OFHC copper with 15 oz per ton of silver added identified herein as Lots C, D, and F, respectively. The material was supplied by the American Metal Co. Ltd., and processed by the Rome Cable Co. The analyses of the three types of copper are given in Table I. Originally, it started as wire bars 4 X 4 X 54 in. These bars were heated to 871° C in air and hot rolled to % in. rod. This rod was cold drawn to 0.204 in. rod (70 pct reduction) in three passes and annealed at 427°C for 4 hr. A portion of the 3/8 in. rod was saved for more detailed cold-drawing experiments. Starting with the annealed 0.204 in. rod, hard-drawn wires were produced by cold drawing to 0.081 in. wire in 7 passes (84.4 pct reduction in area). Half-hard wires were made by cold drawing the 0.204 in. rod to 0.102 in. wire, (75 pet reduction) in 6 passes and annealing at 427&apos;C for 4 hr. This annealed wire was then drawn to 0.081 in. wire, (37.1 pet reduction) in 2 passes. Square rod was made by hot rolling wire bars to Re in. rod in 8 passes. This rod was then cold drawn to 0.445 in.-diam rod and annealed for 346 hr at 538°C. It was then cold drawn to 0.325 in. rod and again annealed at 538°Cf or 3 1/2 hr Hard square rods were then made by cold rolling this material to 0.257 X 0.257 in. rod, a reduction in area of 20.5 pct. Half-hard square rods were made by cold rolling to 0.268 x 0.268 in. square, annealing for 3 1/4 hr at 538°C and cold rolling to 0.257 x 0.257 in., a reduction of 8.5 pct. Soft wire or rod was made from all types of copper by annealing the hard-drawn material at 343°C for 3 hr in steam. The grain size of the annealed 0.081 in. wire varied slightly among the three lots: from o.o15+.oz5 mm in the silver-bearing OFHC to 0.035-0.045 mm in the OFHC copper. The annealed 0.257 in. wires were more uniform in grain size, averaging about 0.035-0.045 mm. Representative structures are shown in Fig I. Effect of Cold Drawing and Tensile Strain on Strength of Copper Conventional tensile tests were performed on the three types of copper in the various degrees of hardness described above.
