The high-temperature Strength oF TD nickel has been observed to be dependent upon the previons thermal and mechanical history of the material. Variations in both the level and the anisotropy of strength have been observed. 01 this paper- these variations are correlated with the storing of annealing resistant elastic strain energy in the matrix of the TD nickel. An x-vay line -broadening tecknique is used to measure the maLrTis elastie strain. THE inclusion of a finely dispersed second phase into a ductile matrix has long been recognized as an extremely effective method of strengthening the matrix both at high and at low homologous temperatures. It has been found, however, that the factors which determine the high-temperature strength are not the same as those which are important at low temperatures. Below 0.5 Tm the size and distribution of the second phase particles are of prime importance in determining the strength,')' while above this temperature the strength is mainly dependent upon the previous thermal and mechanical history of the alloy,3-7 This paper is primarily concerned with explaining the response of the high-temperature mechanical strength of one of these alloys (DuPont's TD nickel) to various thermo-mechanical treatments. It will be shown that this response is not associated with the occurrence of any form of dislocation substructure within the matrix of the alloy. It has been found, however, that a correlation does exist between the elastic strain level in the matrix and the previous thermomechanical history of the alloy and that the observed changes in elastic strain level parallel the measured changes in high-temperature strength. It therefore must be concluded that variations in high-temperature strength are a direct result of the variations in elastic strain level. MATERIAL TD nickel contains approximately 2 vol pct of Tho2 in an unalloyed nickel matrix. It is formed, as a powder, by a chemical technique and this powder is compacted to form ingots which are then extruded to give 21/2-in.-diam rod. Rod of smaller diameter is prepared from the as-extruded rod by swaging. In the studies reported in this paper, 1/2-in.-diam rod was used. This rod received an anneal of 1 hr at 1100°C prior to being used in any of these studies. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Two methods were used to examine the structure of the nickel matrix of the TD nickel. These were: 1) transmission electron microscopy; 2) the analysis of the position and profile of X-ray diffraction lines obtained using the nickel matrix as the diffracting media. To prepare thin foils for electron-microscopical examination, slices of TD nickel approximately 0.050 in. thick were cut from the as-received 1/2-in.-diam rod. These were then chemically polished down to 0.045 in., rolled to 0.009 in., given a predetermined heat treatment, and thinned, using a modified Bollman technique, to provide the foils for observation. All observations were carried out at 100 kv, using a Hitachi HU-11 electron microscope. Specimens of the undeformed rod were prepared by grinding down the 0.050-in.-thick slices to approximately 0.015 in. and then thinning chemically and electrolytically to give the thin foils. The X-ray specimens were prepared by rolling 0.375-in.-thick rectangular blocks down to 0.075 in. The surfaces of the rolled material were ground flat, chemically polished to remove the layer disturbed by the grinding, and given a predetermined anneal in an inert atmosphere. They were then ground lightly to check their flatness and given a final chemical polish prior to being examined. The X-ray diffraction line profiles were measured using an automated Picker biplane diffractometer. A special specimen holder was built to allow a more accurate and reproducible positioning of the specimen. The line profiles were determined by carrying out intensity measurements at intervals of either 1/30 deg or 1/60 deg over a range of 3 deg on either side of the nickel peaks of interest. A piece of pure nickel which had been recrystallized to give a large grain size was used as a standard to give the X-ray line profile generated by a strain-free matrix. The analysis of the X-ray diffraction line profiles is a modification of that due initially to Warren and Aver-bach8and has been described elsewhere.3 This analysis gives a measurement of two parameters associated with the structure of the nickel matrix. These parameters are: 1) the size of the coherently diffracting domains within the nickel matrix; 2) the magnitude of the elastic strains in these domains. Both of these parameters are first determined in terms of a Fourier series. These series are obtained from other Fourier series which describe the measured profile of the X-ray diffraction lines. Thus, for both the coherently diffracting domain size and the elastic strain level, it is possible to plot Ft (the Fourier coefficient) against t (the term in the Fourier series), where t can be expressed in terms of a distance L and the Fourier coefficient Ft(S) (associated with elastic strain level) can be expressed in terms of the root mean square strain (e2)1/2. Thus a plot of (F 2)1/2 vs L can be obtained. Plots of this type are shown graphically in Figs. 6 and 8. Interpretation

The paper presents the results of experiments on the anelastic. behavior of gold, as manifested by grain boundary relaxation. Two grain boundary internal friction peaks are found for 99.9998 pct Au. It is found that the peaks are associated with primary and secondary recrystallization. However, the existence of two discrete peaks cannot be explained on the basis of grain size and shape alone. It is suggested that grain boundary stability, as determined by orientation, plays a role in the observed effects. EVIDENCE for the viscous behavior of grain boundaries in metals has been presented in recent years by several investigators, based upon studies of various anelastic effects, especially internal friction. KG1 has contributed greatly to this field, having put forward a coherent body of evidence for stress relaxation by the viscous intercrystalline flow mechanism. In this connection, he has made extensive use of pure aluminum (99.991 pct) as the test material, although he has also studied other metals and alloys, including pure iron (Puron).² Rotherham, Smith, and Greenough³ have studied the internal friction of pure tin, interpreting their results in a manner similar to that of KG. In view of the importance of such studies in shedding light upon the fundamental structure and behavior of the grain boundaries in pure metals, it appears that the use of a very pure test material which is inert to its environment should provide useful information on anelastic properties and the source of such behavior in pure metals. The present work was carried out on spectrograph-ically pure, 99.9998 pct Au, free of all impurities except for a trace of silver, estimated to be present to the extent of about 0.0002 pct. The term "pure gold" will hereafter refer to this very pure material. Gold of commercial purity, 99.98 pct, was also studied to observe the effects of small amounts of impurities. A pure gold "single crystal" specimen was also tested for comparison. The variation of the internal friction and rigidity modulus as a function of temperature was determined by means of a torsion pendulum apparatus employing extremely low stress amplitudes and a frequency of vibration of the order of 1 cycle per sec. A 12 in. length of 0.031 in. (20 gage) gold wire formed the suspension element. The apparatus was similar to that described by Ke.l The test procedure and the basic requirements to be met for obtaining useful experimental data by this method have been given elsewhere.1,2 It should be made clear that in all of the experiments to be described, the internal friction and rigidity were independent of the amplitude of torsional vibration. The semilog plot of amplitude of vibration vs ordinal number of vibration was a straight line. This was carefully verified for each internal friction measurement. The linear variation shows that the internal friction was independent of stress; i.e., that the specimens were not being cold-worked during testing. The reproducibility of the internal friction curves, which were obtained by cyclic heating and cooling, indicates that the gold was unaffected by its environment during the tests. The measure of internal friction adopted in the present study is the conventional "logarithmic decrement," defined as follows: log. dec. = l/n In A0/An [I] where n is the number of cycles or vibrations; A,, the initial amplitude of vibration; and An, the amplitude after the nth cycle. When the logarithmic decrement is small, the shear modulus, G, of the wire is proportional to the square of the frequency of vibration provided the length and radius of the wire are kept constant. A plot of frequency squared vs temperature gives the following ratio:' This expresses the fraction of the stress which has not been relaxed at a given temperature. Gr and Gv are the relaxed and unrelaxed moduli, respectively. The frequency of vibration in the polycrys-talline specimen is fp, and the frequency of vibration of a single crystal is f8. This latter quantity is obtained simply by extrapolating the linear, low temperature portion of the curve of frequency squared vs temperature for the polycrystalline specimens. The theory of viscous grain boundary stress relaxation as demonstrated by the anelastic behavior of metals has been discussed in detail by Zener4 and need not be reproduced here. Experimental Results Initial measurements of the internal friction of pure gold were carried out on specimens which had been drawn with no intermediate annealing, resulting in a material which had undergone approximately 99 pct reduction of area in final processing. Annealing was then carried out at successively higher temperatures starting at 400°F for 1 hr and proceeding in this manner to as high as 1600°F in 100°F intervals. After each annealing treatment an internal friction and rigidity vs temperature curve was obtained over the range from room temperature to the particular annealing temperature. SME hopes to publish its first separate volume of Mining Exploration Transactions later this year. The reason for this separate publication was stated in "Rock in the BOX," December 1969 [ ], p. 14, as follows: "Because of the great upsurge in mineral exploration (during) the last few years and the fragmentation and narrow specialization of the earth sciences into a great many fields not directly related to exploration, many explorationists feel that a need for a special journal devoted to mineral exploration now exists." To summarize the history behind this change in publication policy of the Mining and Exploration Division, we go back to 1968 when a small group of M&E Division members advocated the establishment of an entirely separate journal devoted specifically to exploration. S. Parker Gay Jr. was appointed chairman of an ad hoc committee to investigate the feelings of the other Division members toward such a journal. Approximately one thousand questionnaires were sent out and the returns showed an extremely favorable reaction. Gay reported the results of his survey to the M&E Division Executive Committee Meeting in Salt Lake City in September 1969. These results were also published in the December 1969 issue of [ ].

THERE is no question as to the importance of the part played by the retort in modern zinc smelting. A satisfactory retort should have properties that will result in resistance to slagging action and fire cracks, and have no tendency, or at least, only a small tendency, to soften and bend under furnace heat. The life and cost of a retort also are extremely important factors. The trend in zinc smelting during the past few years has been toward longer retorts and higher charge density. This is caused by the fact that the diameter is limited to 9 or 10 in. because of heat penetration difficulties in larger sizes. Consequently, increasing the length of the retort and density of charge offers the only practical means of increasing the amount of zinc produced per retort. The stiffness of a retort perhaps is the most important factor, as slag accumulates in the bottom of a retort which has sagged and very quickly cuts through, often ruining the retorts below. The development of the high-silica retort is a result of the demands made by the trend toward heavy charges.

THE recovery of gold and silver from their ores by means of the cyanide process has been so successful in the last few years that any radical improvement would seem impossible; yet the appliance to which I wish to call attention in this paper is really a radical departure from the methods now in general use. The most modern and approved of these, known as the all-sliming method, depends for its success on the grinding of the. ore so fine that practically 90 per cent. of it will pass through a 200-mesh screen. The slimes thus produced are then agitated and aerated in tanks of various types. The main object of this treatment is to insure such a thorough admixture of the pulp and solution that every particle of the ore is surrounded by a volume of solution sufficient to insure the dissolving of the whole of the gold- and silver-content. In addition, in order to expedite the action of the cyanide, and to oxidize such elements as would, if left in their active state, become cyanicides, air is blown in under pressure. In the Pachuca tank, this air is the active and sole means of agitation. The chief objections to all the methods off agitation used heretofore are the expense of operating and maintaining the mechanical devices for keeping the pulp in suspension, and the length of time required to obtain a fairly complete extraction. of the values. These objections are inherent to any method of agitation effecting a circulation of the pulp and the solution together, by giving the whole mass a circular movement, as in the low-tank system, or a vertical circulation, as in the Pachuca-tank system. The deformation and fracture characteristics of eight metals subjected to fully reversed cyclic strain ranging from 0.2 to 50 pct were investigated at room temperature. Strain-hardening characteristics unique to the interna1 structure of a particular metal were found. Complete removal of the strain-hardening effects resulting from prior deformation was brought about by subsequent cyclic strain. Further support for the validity of the inverse relationship between the plastic strain range and the square root of the number of cycles for failure is given. THE resistance of materials to cyclic plastic strain is of interest both from a fundamental and practical point of view. It is now a well-accepted fact that fatigue failure in metals is a consequence of the localized slip deformation which occurs within the individual crystals of metal.'-' Hence the failure process should be strongly dependent upon the magnitude of the gross cyclic plastic deformation of the metal under conditions where this is a measurable quantity. Therefore, an experimental investigation of metals in which the cyclic plastic strain is the independent variable should shed new light on some of the basic aspects of the problem. From the practical point of view, there are many uses for information relating to the cyclic strain resistance of metals. One is the case of thermal stress fatigue where fatigue failure can occur as a consequence of a com- paratively few cycles of thermally induced mechanical deformation. Another is the mechanical working of metals where large cyclic strains are employed. In recent years several publications have appeared relating to the cyclic-strain resistance of metals,8-11 dealing mostly with the fracture aspects where the temperature is cycled simultaneously with the mechanical strain. Some work has been reported on the cyclic-strain resistance of metals at constant temperature, again oriented more toward the fracture aspects of the problem than the deformation aspects. 12-16 The present research investigation was undertaken to obtain information regarding the deformation characteristics of several metals whose structure-property relationships were simple and straightforward under conditions of both cyclic and monotonic strain. It has been shown for example that under cyclic-strain conditions some materials will strain harden, while other materials, particularly cold-worked structures, strain soften and these effects required further clarification.8,17-19 It was also de-

President Turner presided and after the usual formal action on minutes announced that he would create a precedent by transferring the President's annual address (which by tradition has always been delivered at the banquet on Wednesday evening) to the business meeting, and, furthermore, would only present a brief abstract of it. Since it appears in full on pages 127-131 of this issue it can be followed with the careful attention its thoughtful analysis of current conditions deserves.

Rudston Read ;2 and by Juan de Dios Villarello3 The region is a large one, measuring about 24 miles long and 7 miles wide. Dr. Chance, in his interesting paper, tells us very little about the nature of the ores, and, with regard to the geology of the district, contents himself with observing that " the country, as a rule, consists of eruptive rocks; and no evidences of sedimentary strata appear near the mines." The strong temperature dependence of the flow stress of bcc metals has prompted considerable interest and controversy concerning the rate-controlling influence of the Peierls' mechanism upon deformation in metals.18"21 Dorn and Rajnak" recently offered a criterion for Peierls' deformation utilizing a line-energy model of a dislocation to estimate the saddle-point activation energy, for the nucleation of a pair of kinks as a function of applied stress and the height and shape of the peierls9- barrier. It was found that Un/2Uk, where 2Uk is the excess energy of a kink pair, was a unique function of where is the effective stress and 7p is the Peierls' stress as defined in Fig. 20. Interfacial tension divided by the difference in density between the liquid and the vapor phases was determined experimentally by the pendant drop method on several isotherms in the two phase region below the critical point for the methane-normal decane system. The density difference data of Sage and Lacey was used in the calculation of interfacial tension. Both interfacial tension and and interfacial tension divided by density difference were found to vanish at the critical point. Interfacial tensions of less than one dyne/centimeter were observed as far as 1,000 pounds per square inch below the critical pressure. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The interfacial tension divided by the density difference for the methane-normal decane system was determined at the 100°, 130°, 160' and 190°F isotherms, from pressures of about 1,000 psi to the critical pressure, which is more than 5,000 psi for these isotherms. Particular emphasis was placed upon the investigation at pressures slightly below the critical pressure where the interfacial tension is less than 0.5 dyne/cm. Volumetric properties in the two-phase region, including the critical pressures and temperatures, were taken from the work of Sage and Lacey.1 The experimental pendant-drop technique used for the determination of interfacial tensions at high pressures incorporated the ideas of Michaels and Hauser,2 Hough, et a1,3 Walker4 and Heuer.5 In addition, the technique for determination of extremely small interfacial tension by Jennings6 was utilized in the region near the critical points. A detailed description of the apparatus is given in a dissertation by one of the authors.7 Cleaning operations on the stainless-steel sample system included successive washings with chromic acid, tap water and, finally, distilled water. Subsequent cleanings were performed with re-distilled normal pentane, which had an extremely low residue upon evaporation. Specific composition requirements necessitated a fairly precise sample introduction — although, fora two-phase, two-component system, the composition of each phase is completely determined if pressure and temperature are controlled. The normal decane was delivered into the evacuated sample system as a liquid from a burette. The methane was then introduced into the system from a calibrated isothermal container, so that pressure differentials could be used to determine the amount introduced. High pressures were obtained by compressing the sample with a mercury injection pump until the critical pressure was reached for the particular isotherm being studied. Experimental data were then obtained for specific pressures by first decreasing the pressure slightly so that two phases would appear, and then photographing a drop at that pressure. A knowledge of the principles of punctuation is essential to effective and intelligible writing, for the ease and pleasure of the reader, and even his understanding, may depend upon the choice and the placing of punctuation marks. To 'punctuate' is to mark with stops or points; the word comes from the medieval Latin punctuare (punctuatus), which in turn is derived from the Latin punctum, a point. The purpose of punctuation is to show the manner in which the writing is to be understood; to indicate the relations between parts of a sentence and between successive sentences. To some extent "it does for the eye what vocal stress does for the ear", but especially it marks logical relations. Some punctuation marks, such as those indicating admiration, exclamation, and interrogation, are rhetorical as well as grammatical, but most of the common ones are logical, or grammatical. My discussion will be confined to grammatical punctuation in ordinary writing. .'The problem of punctuation in text matter", as George Summey * says, "is to employ words, points, and paragraph breaks in such a way as to achieve at the same time clearness; proper distribution of emphasis, and the desired kind of movement." The criticism of the punctuation of a sentence or of a group of sentences is not final until the context, within the paragraph, is read. A paragraph is a sentence or a group of sentences forming an independent unit of the composition; it represents a unit of thought. A multiplicity of paragraphs produces a choppy effect; 'on the other hand, paragraphs of. excessive length are tiresome, because the belaboring of one unit of thought wearies the reader. The performance of the nation's first geologic repository for Commercial High Level Waste will be evaluated in a variety of ways which will involve the use of the state-of-the-art thermomechanical computer codes. Elastic properties of the host rock and the materials surrounding the repository are required for this numerical modeling effort to assess both near- and far-field effects. Only limited laboratory testing is possible, however, making it extremely beneficial to expand the data base by calculating dynamic elastic properties from available geophysical well logs. Elastic theory dictates that for an isotropic solid there are only two independent variables in addition to mass density, namely the compressional velocity, the shear velocity, and Poisson's Ratio. Compressional velocity and density are readily measured by geophysical well logs or in the lab; the crux of the solution requires measuring or determining either the shear velocity or Poisson's Ratio. Examination of acoustic propagated shear waves measured during confined compression testing demonstrates that Poisson's Ratio is a fundamental lithology-dependent parameter. Once a rock mass is appropriately classified, application of the laboratory derived dynamic Poisson's Ratio will yield a continuous and reasonable in situ modulus from acoustic and density logs. For preliminary characterization and assessment of the mechanical properties of rocks within the subsurface, and for studies of rock quality, this method is sufficiently accurate. The general availability of acoustic and density logs from wells logged for other purposes has made the application of this method desirable.

THE interesting paper recently submitted by Messrs. Tobelmann and Potter' shows that chemical problems have developed which are of great interest in this new and important branch of metallurgy. Those who realize what a process of this kind really involves will agree that it deserves a better name than "leaching process." The word leaching conveys the idea that the copper is simply leached out of the ore with acid and then precipitated on iron; the chemistry of such a process would be of little interest. As, however, during the first year's operation of this plant 24,400,532 lb. (11,067,837 kg.) or about two-thirds of the produce, was electrolytic copper, while 7,992,033 lb., or about one-third, was cement copper, it would seem more appropriate to term the process electrochemical. It further appears, from the particulars given, that efforts have been made to have the entire production in the form of electrolytic copper. -This could be done if the chemistry of the problem were kept in balance, so that it would not be necessary to discard any solutions that carried copper and acid of commercial value. A process, such as that under consideration, in which the copper is precipitated from solution by electrolysis, the solvent being at the same time regenerated, is one that requires special chemical and electrochemical knowledge and experience if all the -copper in solution that has been extracted from the ore is to be successfully and economically produced as electrolytic copper. The object of this paper is to discuss, from the practical and theoretical standpoints, the chemical and electrochemical problems involved in the working of a process of this kind, and' which must be solved to keep it in chemical and electrochemical equilibrium. A novel two-stage froth flotation process for the recovery of pure magnesite from low grade ores is described. The process consists of a first-stage, magnesite flotation step where a rougher magnesite concentrate is floated with amine collectors. The first-stage froth concentrate is then repulped in fresh water, and quartenary ammonium salt and fuel oil are added to float the remaining impurities. The results from laboratory batch tests show that a high-grade magnesite concentrate assaying 0.99-0.20% Si02 and 2.84-0.46%a Ca0 can be produced. Regulation of the variables controlling magnesite froth flotation also allows the variation of the ratio % Ca0: % SiO2, between the acceptable limits 0.32 to 5.79. This ratio is important to the quality of dead-burned magnesite.

There was a notable decrease in drilling operations in 1940 in all of the Rocky Mountain states except Montana, where the two large fields on the Canadian border, Cut Bank and Kevin-Sunburst, were espe-cially active. The expanding markets for Montana natural gas made necessary the more intensive development of such fields as Rowdoin, Cedar Creek and Devon. While there were no important oil and gas discoveries in 1940 in any of the Rocky Mountain states, a few small pools were opened, which may constitute separate areas but may prove with later development to be extensions of old fields. Some of the old fields were extended and deeper pay zones were discovered in others. These have given the areas greatly increased oil reserves and therefore are just as important as the discovery of new fields. The more important of the developments in 1940 are given, by states, in the following paragraphs. Colorado Hiawatha Field, Moffat County.—The Mountain Fuel Supply Co. began the development at Hiawatha of its oil reserves, which were discovered in about 1929, and late in the summer oil began moving from the field by truck to the shipping point at Rock Springs, Wyoming. The Hiawatha field of northwestern Moffat County was discovered in 1927 by the Sormir Petroleum Co., with the completion of No. r Florence Wilson for 4,5,000,000 cu. ft. of gas a day from a Wasatch sand lens at 2200 it. In later development of the field, oil showings were reported in several wells but no development of this resource was undertaken until 1940, when a test of the oil possibilities was started with the release in April of a location for No. 5-A Wilson on the S\W. SW. NW. of sec. 23-1zN-1ooW., on the east side of the field. The Well had an initial production of 327 bbl. of oil a day pumping from three Wasatch (Tertiary) sands between 2005 and 2540 ft. It was drilled to 2562 ft., where the 65/8-in. casing was cemented and gun-perforated at 2005 to 2125 ft., 2260 to 2335 ft. and 2513 to 2540 ft. At the end of the year, this well was averaging zoo bbl. of oil per day, pumping. Two other wells were drilled for oil on Hiawatha during the summer—one a small well of 60 bbl. per day and the other a small gas well. Powder Wash Field, Moffat County.—The development of the Powder Wash field in northwestern Colorado was resumed in 1940 by the Mountain Fuel Supply Co., with the release of a location for No. 2-A Musser in the CWL.NW.SE. of sec. 4-1rN-97W. The Powder Wash field was discovered in 1931 by the Mountain Fuel Supply Co. and the discovery well, No. I Musser, on C.NW. of sec. 5-IIN-97W., was completed at 2152 ft. in the Hiawatha member of the nonmarine Wasatch for-mation for an open flow of 34,000,000 cu. ft. of gas per day under a natural pressure of 685 lb. per sq. inch. Oil was discovered in the Powder Wash field on Nov. 26, 1936, in the company's No. I Carl Allen on the NE.SW.SE. of sec. 32-12N-97W. The oil production was
