The area under discussion includes districts 2 and 4, so designated by the Texas Railroad Commission,‡ and comprises the following 26 counties: Bee, Brooks, Calhoun, Cameron, De Witt, Duval, Goliad, Gonzales, Hidalgo, Jackson, Jim Hogg, Jim Wells, Karnes, Kenedy, Kleburg, Lavaca, Live Oak, Nueces, Refu-gio, San Patricia, Starr, Victoria, Webb, Willacy, Wilson and Zapata. Drilling and Production The total number of wells drilled in this district during 1944 is shown in Table 5. This indicates a 41 per cent increase in all drilling over 1943. In spite of every handicap created by the war, the oil industry more than met the crisis in its drilling program in this district. Last year we thought it would be impossible to add to the total number of wells drilled in the previous yea;, but in spite of the lack of manpower and materials this large increase was shown. During 1944 this district produced 124,201,978 bbl. of oil from 11,607 producing wells, whereas in 1943 it produced 88,421,693 bbl. from 11,211 producing wells. This is an increase of 35,780,285 bbl. of oil. Some decline has been shown in the older fields arid undoubtedly the majority of wells in the district are producing at too high a rate. However, this district has been able to meet any demands made on it by the Petroleum Administration for War for increased production. Discoveries and Extensions There was a slight decline over the preceding year in the number of wildcats drilled, but the number of discoveries increased. In most instances subsequent development has not been sufficient to arrive at preliminary valuations but it appears that the over-all oil discoveries were below normal and that the gas discovcrics were relatively more important. The Canolis and Tijerina pools, Jim Wells County, and the Dan Sullivan pool, Brooks County, appear to be the outstanding oil discoveries of the year. No important oil reserve was discovered or developed in the Wilcox horizons, although considerable wildcatting was done. Important extensions were made at Agua Dulce and Stratton in Nueces and Teleberg Counties. Production was increased appreciably at Willimar, Willacy County, and Seeligson, Jim Wells County, in sands and areas which were apparently productive at the beginning of the year. Refining Most of the major work in the changing and completing of refineries was finished this past year. Some of the most modern refineries in the industry are now located in the Corpus Christi area. Gas and Condensate No new recycling projects were commenced during the year, nor were there any important additions to the old operations. No major gas reserve was developed, although several new discoveries suggest potentid possibilities.

An inventory of the mineral resources of a region is a most desirable basis for planning their systematic development. In the absence of appropriate samples upon which to base a reliable estimate of this inventory, investigators have resorted to a number of indirect approaches; the unit regional value concept forms the basis for one such approach. The produced resources of a region are a function of the inventory multiplied by the degree of intensity (some fraction between zero and one) of development of the resources. A convenient means of expressing this amount is to accumulate the weight and value of resource and to prorate the totals over the area represented by the unit sampled; i.e., weight and value per unit area or tonnes/km.2 and U.S. 1967 $/km.2. When this approach is used for the U.S.A., South Africa and Rhodesia the average value of (log.) U.S. 67$/km.2 for the states of the U.S.A. and South Africa are similar ($55,176 U.S.$67/km.2 and $52,538/km.2 respectively); whereas, Rhodesia is relatively underdeveloped (10,301 U.S.67$/km.2). On the other hand if the individual commodities are used as a basis for comparison, the U.S.A. shows the greatest diversity (67 commodities out of a possible total of 75) with South Africa next (50 commodities) and Rhodesia last with only 26 commodities. Since it is known that area and value are not simply related perhaps diversity is directly related to area. Again the kinds of commodities which have contributed the greatest value to the totals differs, with fuels (petroleum, coal and natural gas) predominating in the U.S.A. totals; whereas, South Africa and Rhodesia obtain their greatest contributions from gold, diamonds (S. Africa) coal and asbestos. In each case the greatest value of resources is produced from sedimentary rocks. As a somewhat different kind of example, consider a single resource (petroleum, the most valuable in the U.S.A.) over a large area (number of sampling units) the U.S.A. by state. Furthermore, assume that the model frequency distribution of the amount of petroleum (tonnes/km.2) is log normal. Then the present production fails to match the model first because 17 states (34% out of 50) have not produced petroleum. Of the remaining 33 states, Louisiana has produced the most (15,177 tonnes/km.2) and the frequency histogram is still skew. A spatial analysis of the distribution of the amount of petroleum by state shows that the samples (i.e., states) are not random; the non-producers and producers tend to cluster. It remains to be seen if this is indeed a true representation of the incidence of petroleum or is a function of the exploration philosophy currently in vogue.

THE transformation that occurs in lithium and its solid solutions containing magnesium1,2 is similar in many respects to other diffusionless transformations of the martensitic type. This general similarity makes it desirable to investigate the transformation curves in detail. The current interest in the phenomenon of stabilization in martensitic transformations has created a need for a careful appraisal of possible stabilization effects in both cooling and heating transformations in lithium alloys. The effect of prior heat treatment on the temperature at which transformation begins and the effect of various temperature cycles in partially transformed alloys also merit attention. Limited data on some of these features were presented previously,' but the present studies have been made with improved apparatus, in which erratic fluctuations were smaller than in the earlier work, and include many independent determinations of certain critical observations. Material and Methods Geiger counter X-ray spectrometers were used: a Norelco instrument, original model, and a General Electric XRD-3. The low-temperature specimen holder has been described elsewhere." Specimens 10 mm in diam and 1.5 mm thick were held in firm contact with a copper block which was attached to the lower end of a stainless steel tube that extended up to a reservoir of liquid nitrogen. A heating coil on the tube permitted a controlled temperature gradient along the tube, so that desired temperatures and rates of heating and cooling could be obtained by controlling the heating current. The specimen was surrounded by an atmosphere of evaporated nitrogen in an insulated chamber having double cellophane windows. The temperature of the specimen was read by a thermocouple imbedded in it close to the irradiated area; the specimen could be held at constant temperature within 1°C for long periods. The body-centered cubic 200 reflection near 8 = 26" was used as the index of the amount of b.c.c. material present; occasional checks were made using the most suitable line of the low-temperature phase, the close-packed hexagonal 110 line near 8 = 29". Copper radiation was used throughout. A continuous record was made of the reflected intensities on a strip chart recorder, both when the peak intensity of a line was being followed and when the lines were being scanned at constant temperature. On the continuous recordings of peak intensity, periodic checks were made on the background intensity between the lines, and on the setting of the spectrometer for maximum intensity. The lithium-base solid solution containing 12.4 atomic pct Mg (33.3 wt pct) that had been used previously' was chosen, as it had a transformation range at relatively high temperatures, so as to permit wide temperature cycling within the range. Relationships are derived between average dimensions measured on a polished cross section and the spatial dimensions of particles dispersed as uniform cylinders. The equations are applicable to the measurement of rods or plates without the stipulation that they be extremely thin. QUANTITATIVE analysis of the elements of mi-crostructures has been limited by a lack of knowledge concerning the relationships between observations on plane surfaces and the spatial nature of the structure. This paper is an extension of previous efforts to establish equations suitable for the quantitative investigation of microstructures. The equations derived fill two gaps in the range of particle shapes for which measurements may be required, namely those shapes lying between extremely thin plates and equiaxed particles (approximately spherical), and those intermediate between equiaxed particles and extremely thin rods or needles. In a previous paper' equations were developed relating dimensions measured on a polished cross section to the average spatial dimensions of particles in the form of spheres, extremely thin plates, and extremely thin rods. For extremely thin rods the dimensions measured on a polished cross section were found to depend on the radius only, so that no information concerning the rod lengths or number of rods per unit volume could be obtained from observations on a cross section. In this paper equations are derived relating dimensions measured on a polished cross section to the spatial dimensions of particles in the form of identical cylinders. These equations may be used to evaluate the dimensions of rods, as well as the dimensions of plates, without the stipulation that the plates or rods be extremely thin. The impossibility of evaluating the length of extremely thin rods from planar measurements appears as an increase in the amount of data required for a given precision, as the length-radius ratio increases. Consider a sample containing particles of a phase in the form of cylinders of uniform radius T and height t. If the cylinders are randomly oriented, as in a sufficiently large sample of a fine grained poly-crystalline material, area and lineal analysis may be carried out with parallel cross-sectional planes and lineal traverses. If the cylinders are not randomly oriented, it is necessary to randomize the orientations of the cross-sectional planes and traverse lines. Let a unit cube be cut from the sample, and a cross-section plane be passed through the cube parallel to one of the cube faces. The number of particles N, cut by the cross-sectional plane per unit area is equal to the number of particles N, per unit volume times the probability p1 of a plane intersecting a single randomly positioned and randomly oriented cylinder in the cube. Let J be the maximum cylinder dimension in the direction normal to the cross-section planes, as shown in Fig. 1. The Atlanta Mine is located in east central Nevada, in Lincoln County, 116 km (72 miles) south of Ely and 80 km (50 miles) northeast of the old mining town of Pioche. From this famous district, high-grade copper ore was mined and shipped to a smelter in Wales in the 1850s; an early day lead blast furnace was also in operation. The Standard Slag Company began operations in May 1975 on the well known Atlanta Mine, which was operated by Roy Hardy in the 1930s. The mill is currently processing 450 mtpd (500 stpd) of gold-silver bearing ore. Mining by open pit is in a brecciated zone occurring between limestone-dolomites on the foot wall and tertiary rhyolites on the hanging wall. The quartz breccia is considered among the most abrasive in the world - shovel teeth must be replaced every week. Stripping ratio is 3.9 to 1.0. Because of the hard abrasive ore, the crushing plant consists of four units: two jaw crushers in series, one Hydrocone, and one Gyradisc. Mine feed to the primary crusher is limited to 610 mm (24 in.) in size. The remaining crushers work in closed circuit with screens to produce a mill feed of 6 to 13 mm (0.25 and 0.50 in.). Hardness of the ore is demonstrated by the fact that the reversible liners of the primary jaw crusher had to be replaced in early 1978 after handling only 39,000 mt (44,000 st) at a cost of $0.095 per mt ($0.086 per st). Another example of the extreme abrasiveness of the breccia ore was the total cost per ton in 1977 for all wear parts in the comminution circuit, including screens and grinding media. This amounted to $2.84 per mt ($2.58 per st). The Atlanta grinding plant consists of three ball mills to grind the 7 mm (1 /4 in.) crushing plant product to 85 to 90% minus 150 microns (100 mesh). Feed rate to the primary Tricone mill is determined by maintaining a cyclone overflow at 28 to 38% solids, which controls the grind mentioned above. A mixture of 90 and 65 mm (3.5 and 2.5 in. ) balls are charged to this primary mill. Both the secondary mills are charged with 50 mm (2 in ) balls. Total ball consumption is 2 kg per mt (4 lb per st). All three ball mills use rubber liners. Primary mill cyclone underflows are fed to the secondary mills close circuited with the same cyclones.

THE work of, the Mining Methods Committee is now well under way. Following discussions previous to and during the February meeting, an Outline for Papers on Mining Methods was prepared, and over a thousand copies have now been distributed to committee men, to section secretaries and to members who have indicated any interest in the subject. The objective of the committee is to prepare a symposium on mining methods which will be of real practical value to the operator and engineer in the solution of every-day mining problems. It is planned to cover the entire field of mining in such a way that the different branches of mining, such as coal and ore (iron, copper, lead, zinc and precious metal) can benefit from the experience of the others at points where they have problems in common.. It is realized fully that each of these branches of mining possesses its own peculiar problems, but at the same time, there are prob-lems in connection with each, where the experience in others should be of value. The committee proposes to proceed along the following lines: 1. To present a general classification of mining methods, showing their inter-relationship, and at the same time .provide a common language for the discussion of mining methods and a nomenclature that will have the same meaning wherever used. A com-plete set of illustrations will accompany the classi-fication to make clear the terminology adopted and to show graphically the inter-relationship of methods. 2. To show the relationship between the physical characteristic of the deposit, the economic consider-ations and the. mining method., It is not proposed to treat this subject as a mere academic problem, but to secure reports from every mining company of impor-tance in this country, which will show what methods or modifications and combinations of methods have actually been applied and the physical conditions and economic considerations which have led to the adoption of these methods in each case. The Mining Methods Committee has drawn up an Outline for Papers on Mining Methods to be distributed among mining engineers and operators, giving in detail the information desired. This outline is the result of several months of careful thought and is a composite of the suggestions of many engineers and mining company officials from all parts of the United States.

AMIDST the tumult and the shouting of the times, there are perceptible certain tendencies, quiet though serious, to take stock of the situation with a view to putting our house in order, and of these none is more encouraging than the awakening, interest in the higher education, and especially in technical education. Various committees of the professional organizations have cast much light on the matter and have pointed the way to progress and reform, but their scope is necessarily restricted by the requirements of precision and any excursion beyond these bounds must be undertaken by the unfettered individual who is free to rush in where responsible committees fear to tread. A discussion of the bearing of the higher education on character scarcely lends itself to objective treatment and yet, fraught as it is with imponderables and abstractions, the theme cannot be escaped in any com-prehensive scheme of education. The question is being pressed with growing insist-ence, why these United States, relatively to Europe, are deficient in intellectual output, and the ready reply, "Because America is a new country and Americans are too intent on developing their natural resources," is too facile and too false to carry conviction.

As is generally understood, the word geophysics means literally ?the physics of the Earth? and the science of geophysics is therefore that which treats of the study and measurements of the various physical properties of the Earth. The broad and general study of the elastic, the gravimetric. or the magnetic properties of the Earth as a whole belongs to the general science of geophysics. The detailed application of this science to rocks of shallow depth and in small areas for the purposes of ascertaining data on their character and structural attitude gave rise to the present well-known science of ?applied geophysics.? Since the discovery of enormous new quantities of oil, gas, and sulphur has been by far and wide the principal benefaction of geo-physics in the United States, this paper will refer only to geophysical methods employed in the search for these particular minerals. The application of methods and appliances originally used for geophysical research to the solution of the practical problems of finding new oil-fields, plus the counterflow or new and highly refined techniques and Instruments from the company and consulting geophysical research laboratories and into non-economic geophysical research, has provided another case of that gen-eral cycle of events which is familiar to all scientists. That this closed-circuit flow or scientific current has been tremendously important to the whole science of geophysics is probably well known to all members of this audience, but the gen-eral status of the exploratory geophysical arts as now used In the search for new oil-fields, the scales on which different methods are being used, the magnitude of the costs involved, and the far greater magnitude of the practical results achieved may not necessarily have come so directly to your attention. It is, I understand, for this reason that this paper has been sug-gested, and I shall seek to provide the information requested by using as case-illustrations those changes in the oil-reserve picture for the United States as a whole, and for the Gulf Coast, California, and Illinois Basin regions in particular, which have occurred in the period of the past 17 years, during which time oil-field discoveries have proceeded at a rate which served to build up known and readily-available (or proven) oil supplies to a reasonable figure, and have dispelled the fears of a serious oil shortage during any period for which valid fore-casts can be made. Not that geophysical-prospecting methods have alone been responsible for this transformation, but they have an indispensable and leading part in the picture of exploration and production-to which geophysics, geology, engineering, and general technical progress have jointly made contribution. So far as the United States as a whole is concerned, its total proven, probable, and possible oil reserves (discoverable and recoverable by then-known methods) were estimated at about nine billion barrels in 1920, whereas proven reserves alone are now com-puted at about 16 billion. In 1920 the driller in ?wild-cat? territory was faced with the knowledge that for every new oil-field opened by a successful well, from 20 to 100 unsuccessful wells would have to be drilled and, in some territories, that the chances for a discovery were really less than one in 100 for new drilling, in contrast to which may be cited the record for the past year in parts of Louisiana where the 67 wells drilled opened 16 new oil-fields, that is to say, where the score of hits to misses was increased to approximately one out of four.

Fox the past 20 years it has been generally accepted that the flotation process is made possible as a result of the action of certain chemical substances on the surface of the mineral particles. In fact, it has been suspected, but never demonstrated, that this action produces on the mineral particles a layer of chemosorbed ions that is of the order of magnitude of a monolayer; that is, of a layer one ion deep. It is the purpose of this paper to present certain initial results on the relationship of mineral surface area and collecting-agent requirements. Up to about eight years ago, all considerations involving the surface area of finely divided solids were-limited by the fact that there was not in existence any general method for determining the extent of such surfaces, especially on mixed materials. However, the method invented by Brunauer, Emmett and Teller1 has changed the situation by providing a general procedure (BET method). This procedure has already been applied to mineral dressing problems2 -4 and has now received confirmation as to accuracy by an entirely independent method.5 This confirmatory or "absolute" method uses a very tedious calorimetric procedure and is not suitable for routine determinations; but still another method6 now is available to relate the results obtained by the BET method to those obtained calorimetrically. This Harkins-Jura method has the advantage that it does not require an assumption concerning the parking area per molecule of adsorbate (nitrogen). In the original work by Brunauer, Emmett and Teller the parking area per nitrogen molecule was calculated to be either 13.8Å2. or 16.2Å2. according as the nitrogen was assumed to be closely packed as in crystalline nitrogen or loosely packed as in liquid nitrogen. The initial experimental work from this laboratory2 supported the 13.8Å2. figure; that work was done on glass spheres of measurable geometric area and it was based on the assumption that the glass spheres were truly smooth; any deviation from this assumption would, of course, have made the calculated parking area higher. Harkins and Jura's results suggest that the parking area is not the same for all substrata; furthermore, the average of the 87 measurements cited indicates a "preferred" parking area for the nitrogen molecule of about 15.2Å2., with extreme values at 13.7 and 16.9Å2. The average of 21 determinations made in connection with this study' gave a parking area of 14.3 ± 0.27Å2. In view of this result and of the Harkins and Jura

In the original work by Brunauer, Emmett and Teller the parking area per nitrogen molecule was calculated to be either 13.8?2 or 16.2?2. according as the nitrogen was assumed to be closely packed as in crystalline nitrogen or loosely packed as in liquid nitrogen. The initial experimental work from this laboratory2 supported the 13.8?2. figure; that work was done on glass spheres of measurable geometric area and it was based on the assumption that the glass spheres were truly smooth; any deviation from this assumption would, of course, have made the calculated parking area higher. Harkins and Jura's results suggest that the parking area is not the same for all substrata; furthermore, the average of the 87 measurements cited indicates a "preferred" parking area for the nitrogen molecule of about 15.2?2., with extreme values at 13.7 and 16.9?2. ABOUT a year and a half ago, at the San Francisco meeting of the American Chemical Society, in connection with the excursions to local smelting-works, I had occasion to show some lantern-slides illustrating the recent commercial development of electrical methods for precipitating the suspended matter from smelter-smoke, the underlying phenomena of which were clearly brought to the attention of the technical public by Sir Oliver Lodge as long ago as 1884. In the Journal of industrial and Engineering Chemistry, August, 1911, most of these views were reproduced, together with an account of the work from its beginning up to July, 1911. To-day I wish particularly to show you some of the further developments of the work since that time; but in order to make these clear they will be prefaced by a brief abstract of the article above referred to. The removal of suspended particles, front gases, by the aid of electric discharges is by no means a new idea. As early as 1824 we' find it suggested by Hohlfeld 1 as a means of suppressing ordinary smoke, and again a quarter of a, century later by Guitard.2 These suggestions, which do not seem to have stimulated any practical study of the question, were soon entirely forgotten, and only brought to light again by Sir Oliver Lodge,3 many years after he himself had independently rediscovered the same phenomena and brought them to public attention 4 in a lecture before the Liverpool Section of the So-

Originally round tensile specimens of a eutectic Zn-A1 alloy develop elliptical cross sections during superplastic deformation. This observation, coupled with a detailed study of the microstructure and preferred orieniation, suggests that crystallographic slip and continuous grain boundary migration or re-crystallization are important processes during super-plastic deformation. In spite of the extensive activity in superplasticity1-15 and the numerous explanations proposed, no single model has had universal acceptance. It has been established, however, that the general requirements for superplastic extension of two-phase alloys include an extremely fine, stabilized grain size of the order of a few microns, a temperature about equal to or greater than one-half the melting point, a critical range of strain rate, and a similarity in the mechanical strength of the major phases. The proposed models can perhaps best be characterized in terms of the important phenomena associated with them. These phenomena include: phase instability,1 diffusional creep by volume diffusion3 or grain boundary diffusion4,5 slip and continuous grain boundary migration or recrystalliza-tion,= grain boundary Sliding,7-9,13,14 and dislocation glide.'5 In this paper, experimental observations will be reported which support a model involving slip and continuous grain boundary migration or recrystalliza-tion. Specifically, a correlation will be made between this model and the development of elliptical cross sections as originally round specimens are superplas-tically deformed. For the most part, superplasticity studies have been conducted with eutectic or eutectoid alloys. Probably the most thoroughly studied material has been the monotectoid Zn-A1 alloy.1,2,6,12,13,15 No attention to the eutectic Zn-A1 alloy has previously been reported, and the results discussed in this paper represent part of a general study of the superplastic properties of this alloy. MATERIALS The alloys used in this investigation were prepared by melting appropriate quantities of 99.99+ pct A1 and 99.999 pct Zn in air, mixing, and pouring into a water- cooled stainless-steel mold. Wet-chemical analysis was conducted with each heat of alloy prepared, using the procedure of Fish and smith.16 The composition of the eutectic alloy was 95.1 wt pct Zn. Ingots about 2 in. thick were rolled to 0.4-in. plate at about 300°C with a reduction of 5 to 10 pct per pass. Specimens were machined from the plate with the tensile axis parallel to the rolling direction. The specimens were round, with 0.150-in.-diam, 1.25-in.-long gage length, and 0.25-in.-diam threaded grip sections. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Specimens were mounted inside a uniform-temperature quartz tube which was surrounded by a double elliptical radiant furnace with a 12-in.-long uniform-temperature hot zone and a low thermal capacity. The tube extended through the top and bottom of the furnace and permitted rapid quenching of the loaded specimens when quickly filled with cold water at the conclusion of the test. The quench precluded any effects on specimen microstructure from a normal, slow cool. Constant stress was applied to test specimens by suspending a load on a constant stress cam of the type described by Hopkin.17 The design of this cam permitted application of a constant stress for elongations up to 200 pct. For greater elongation, approximately constant stress conditions were maintained by systematically reducing the load manually. RESULTS As part of an investigation of the superplastic properties of the eutectic Zn-A1 alloy, evidence was obtained for the development of elliptically shaped cross sections as originally round specimens were extended. For example, after an elongation of about 100 pct, a round specimen with an initial diameter of 0.150 in. became elliptical with major and minor axis of 0.128 and 0.88 in., respectively. Photographs are presented to illustrate the ellipticity developed during superplastic deformation, Fig. 1. The specimen shown was deformed at a stress of 500 psi, at a temperature of 285°C, and a strain rate of 2.28 x 10-2 min-1. Several samples of copper-nickel ore from the Duluth Gabbro were studied to relate their mineral-ogical characteristics with their amenability to concentration by flotation. The most common rocks in the samples were norites, gabbros, and troctolites. The texture of the rocks varied from coarse pegma-titic to very fine. The copper contents ranged from 0.2-0.7% and the nickel contents from 0.07-0.15%. The ore minerals were chalcopyrite, cubanite, pyrrhotite, and pentlandite. Most of the ore minerals occurred in interstices between laths of plagioclase, but some were included in the gangue grains. The samples responded readily to xanthate flotation. After a 65 to 100-mesh grind about 95% of the copper and 85% of the nickel were recovered in a bulk sulfide concentrate. Such recoveries remained constant even with grinds as fine as 270 mesh due to the extremely fine inclusions of sulfides in the silicate gangue. A finer grind than 270 mesh was necessary to free the copper-iron sulfides from the nickel-iron sulfides. A combination of time and British gum* was quite effective in producing concentrates analyzing 25-30% copper. The nickel concentrate averaged 1.5% nickel. Most of the nickel lost in the tailing was present as un-liberated sulfides and not as nickel in the olivine structure. The nickel content of the olivine was only about 0.05 or 0.08%. Western world nickel usage in 1967 is expected to be the second highest on record, amounting to 825 million lb. Despite a rise in mine production, however, demand is expected to exceed supply in 1968. ' Hence, exploration, development, and production expansion projects are being accelerated on a world scale. In Minnesota the copper-nickel bearing Duluth Gabbro is receiving much attention. During the past year 11 companies have been granted leases in the region, and the 1967 Minnesota legislature enacted a tax law designed to encourage the development of a copper-nickel industry. Although it is only during the past few years that mining companies have shown an active interest in the Minnesota copper-nickel deposit, copper-nickel minerals have been known to exist in northeastern Minnesota since 1899.3 At the 28th Mining Symposium, Dr. P. K. Sims, from the Geological Survey of Minnesota, gave a review of copper-nickel exploration in northeastern Minnesota,4 in which he emphasized that the potential of the Duluth Gabbro complex is large. Tests on samples from the Kawishiwi River area were reported by the United States Bureau of Mines in 1955.' In 1964, the Mines Experiment Station described tests on samples from the Gunflint Trail: and in 1966 the Minnesota Geological Survey published a geological map of the Gabbro Lake Quadrangle. The Mines Experiment Station published a study of the concentration of a Minnesota copper-nickel ore in 1967.7 The present paper is divided into three parts. The first describes the mineralogy of some rock samples from the Kawishiwi River area of northeastern Minnesota; the second summarizes the results of numerous flotation tests that were made on the samples, and the third explains the loss of nickel in the flotation tailing. MINERALOGY OF KAWlSHlWl ROCKS Recently five samples of mineralized gabbro from the Kawishiwi River area, a few miles east of Ely, were received at the Mines Experiment Station. One of the samples was a 175-lb composite, which was designated Ore 1556. The other four samples were 7-lb grab samples that had been obtained from four different exploration pits. They were designated Ore 1626, Lots 1 through 4. Basic Mineralogy: Many authors have reported that the rocks of the so-called gabbro of the Duluth Intrusion vary widely in composition.8-9 The samples on which our studies were based also contained a wide range of rocks. A gabbro, olivine-gabbro, anorthosite-gabbro, norite, and a troctolite were represented. The essential minerals in the samples were plagio-clase, pyroxene, and olivine, in variable proportions.

The following notes are contributed, not with the idea of offering a complete history of the development of this very important process as applied to the Leadville district, but with the hope that the practice, as it was carried out in the Bi-Metallic Smelter, may still be of interest to others. The Bi-Metallic Smelter, at Leadville, Colo., was the first to make a commercial success of the process described in the following pages, which consisted essentially of smelting raw silver- and copper-bearing sulphide ores in blast-furnaces to form a matte, which was generally re-smelted with siliceous ores for a second high-grade matte. Robert Sticht, in his excellent monograph on the subject,1 has outlined briefly the plant belonging to this company. He says, in effect: The Boulder, Mont., enterprise set the example for others with whom the patentee (w. L. Austin) had been negotiating, and the old La Plata lead-smelter at Leadville, Colo., was fashioned into a crude, temporary experimental plant for the Bi-Metallic Company, and the feasibility of the process demonstrated by a trial run. Subsequently, the plant was considerably improved, and, being supplied with very favorable ores, continued to run without interruption from August, 1892, to June, 1893. In September, 1893, smelting was resumed in a completely remodeled establishment, some $200,000 having been expended upon the new work. Thus, aside from the Montana experiments, which, under the direction of W. L. WITH Thomas G. Fear, chairman of the Coal Di- vision, presiding, the coal miners opened their program Monday morning with a general session at which three papers were presented. The first, "The Classification of Coal for Stationary Steam Generation," was presented by the author, Thomas W. Harris, Jr. In discussion, H. T. Coates inquired if it would not be possible to pick out a geographical coal section, certain seams or a group of mines, which would rank high in a desired feature or features, perhaps giving different -- - local sections or different mines something to designate a rating ("good," "fair," and "poor"). This might be done relative to anti-clinkering, free-burning, ,anti-slagging, smokelessness, friability and grindability. These might be listed or arranged on a map or diagram so that the prospective customer could find a coal that rated particularly high in desired characteristics. C. A. Reed pointed out, in part, that coal producers and sellers have found a bad but necessarily present condition in the country, especially with the smaller user of coal. This is entirely due to the fact that the employer expects his purchasing representative to be a genius and have expert knowledge of everything he buys, coal included, whereas in the larger plants he has and uses expert knowledge from the active organization when necessary. J. B. Morrow said that size rating was important in classifying coal and he emphasized that it was impossible to come to a definite basis on analysis alone.

A large consolidated sand core was used in this investigation. Four groups of experiments including gas drives, water drives, and water drives combined with gas injection, were made. The results of the gas-drive experiments indicate that greater ultimate recovery may be obtained by higher pressure gradients. However, other considerations challenge the absolute veracity of this conclusion. Results indicate that with connate water present and a low pressure gradient during a gas drive, less gas is required to produce a given amount of oil. The saturation gradient determined during a gas drive is presented. Results of the water-drive experiments indicate that the recovery of oil is not a function of either gradient Or input rate. The presence of initial gas saturation resulted in a slightly lower final oil saturation. Injection of sufficient gas to maintain the initial gas saturation during a water drive resulted in lower final oil saturation. Introduction With the demand for petroleum products reaching an all-time record high and the location and exploitation of new reserves becoming more difficult and expensive, the oil industry must look to more thorough and efficient methods of producing the petroleum already located. Much of the previous work along these lines is exploratory and suggests a more complete investigation. For example, a great amount of laboratory work has been done on flooding sands initially saturated roo pct with oil. Since sands saturated roo pct with oil rarely, if ever, exist in nature, and because the water content is a vital factor in the ultimate recovery from the sand, laboratory investigations on cores without water must be supplemented by comparable work on cores with water present.1'2 Other investigators have done a considerable amount of laboratory work using gas and water drives.3 Krutter and Day4 have reported results of investigations using cores saturated IOO pct with oil and have concluded that " the ultimate recovery obtained, using air drive, from a completely oil-saturated core depends on the pressure gradients used. The higher the pressure gradient, the greater will be the recovery until a certain Pressure range is reached above which the reward of increased recovery is much smaller for similar increments in pressure." Yuster and Day6 conclude that less gas and less time are required to produce a given quantity of oil at high pressure gradients than at low pressure gradients; they also conclude that an increase in the viscosity of the oil requires a proportionate increase in the gas needed for recovery. Their results indicate that the gas required to produce a given quantity of oil is greatly reduced by the presence of connate water. R. C.
