Two effects of a difference in density may be observed in miscible displacement. As the difference is increased from zero there is first a change in mode from multiple fingers to a single finger. A further increase results in a more rapid growth of the single finger. Miscible displacement with multiple fingers has been discussed by Blackwell, et al, whereas miscible displacement with a single finger has been discussed by Craig, et al. In the present paper experiments are described which bridge the gap between these extreme cases. INTRODUCTION Craig, et al,1 investigated the effect of gravity on frontal displacements for circumstances in which the gravity forces were significant. Blackwell, et a1,2 dealt with the other extreme in which gravity forces were negligible. The considerable difference between their results is illustrated in Fig. 1 where the breakthrough recoveries are plotted against the mobility ratio. The experiments described in the present paper were conducted to examine how the transition from the one extreme case to the other occurs when the gravity forces are gradually reduced. The transition is well illustrated by the production history after breakthrough. Fig. 2 shows how the number of pore volumes which must be injected at a constant rate to displace 98 per cent of the original fluid depends on the gravity force. For each mobility ratio there is a transition range, and a very significant change in the number of pore volumes occurs when this range is traversed. This range of the gravity force is physically linked with the formation of viscous fingers. A single finger is predominant for larger gravity forces; a multiplicity of fingers is formed for smaller gravity forces. Improved recovery and the occurrence of multiple fingers is concomitant with a large increase in the amount by which the fluids are mixed within the porous medium. The transition range depends on all the dimension-less groups which characterize the problem; but this dependence has not been exhaustively studied as yet and only fragmentary results are discussed in this paper.

MUCH the same story can be told for the lead industry for the year 1945 as for the three previous years. In response to inquiries as to new developments, invariably the answer has been, "No new developments-our men either too busy with the man-power problem or trying to get production out." Time and efforts of industry have been concentrated for the most part on war or readjustment problems. Now that V-E and V-1 day have passed, the lead industry can justly be proud of its record in World War II. As in previous wars, lead played an important role and one of its most spectacular uses was in the production of the atomic bomb. We read that the part lead played was rather obscure, but as a protective agent, lead played a most significant role. "Since the materials in the Pile Plant are intensely radioactive, all storage and handling must be done behind thick concrete walls or lead shields. The material is never seen and all operations are auto matically controlled by a foolproof remote control system especially designed for this purpose." (Chews. & Met., Sept. 1945.) INTRODUCTION In April 1988 discussions were about to start with BP on the possibility of buying their- mineral interests, and it took a long time to arrange a deal. I will talk about RTZ without BP Minerals, look at the new RTZ with BP Minerals, discuss the outlook for metal prices, and review the problems in South Africa and develop the case against sanctions on that country. RTZAT THE END OF 1988 Late in 1987, after completing a worldwide review of our strategic thrust, we decided: 1. That the business focus would be to remain a major diversified natural resource group with interests in related industries. 2. To divest non-core and low growth businesses. 3. To develop a logical acquisition plan. 4. To emphasise organic growth and, most importantly, to enhance shareholders' wealth by capital increase and a progressive dividend policy. Subsequently, we concluded that we should sell our oil and gas business and dispose of several assets for which we saw little growth potential. The disposal programme raised some U.S.$ 1,600 million, representing a significant capital gain on our various investments. All transactions were carried out by our small Head Office staff in London, without the help of merchant banks and lawyers, and we were able to safeguard the employment of our staff in all these operations. The most interesting disposal was of our oil and gas interests. Before the 1987 strategic review, we had ambitions to develop our oil and gas interests and to become the leader in the second division of European oil companies. Our interests, which were purely in exploration and production of oil and gas, consisted of the 100% owned RTZ Oil and Gas company, and 29% of LASMO, a publicly quoted U.K. oil and gas company with extensive worldwide interests. LASMO, in turn, owned 25% of Enterprise Oil, one of the more successful of the North Sea oil exploration and production companies. Prior to the end of 1987, our intention was to acquire control of both LASMO and Enterprise. However, when we evaluated the net asset value of these two companies based on our oil price assumptions, which were pessimistic for the next five years or so, we concluded that they were both trading in the market at significant premiums. This, taken with the additional premium required for acquisition and the high cost of exploration, led us to conclude that, since funds could undoubtedly be used to better effect, we should sell our interests. Turning to the other major achievements in 1988, we commissioned, and built up to design levels in a very short period of time, the Morro do Ouro gold mine in Brazil. This mine reached its design output of 100,000 ounces of gold per year within three months of start-up, which was on time and under budget. We are now considering a possible expansion of this property. In South America, Utah International, Mitsubishi and RTZ arranged non-recourse finance, with post completion guarantees, for the giant Escondida Project in Northern Chile. NO STRANGER phenomenon exists in the American mining industry today than the so-called bootleg anthracite industry in Pennsylvania which now produces probably close to 15 per cent of the total hard coal out- put of the State. Instead of being what - was first thought to be a temporary condition, countenanced because of the desperate condition of some of the miners at the depth of the depression. it is thriving now as never before. Maurice Rey—The influence of cyclone diameter upon the fineness of separation is an important point which, however, cannot be discussed adequately if the injection pressure or the rate of flow are not specified. Perhaps some light can be thrown on the matter by using the formulas derived by Dahlstrom. Let us consider several geometrically similar cyclones where the apertures e and b are equal and proportional to the diameter D and which are operated with the same pressure drop. Eq 8 of Dahlstrom's paper can be written: Q Q = K D'. " or. if F is constant: Q = K D18 K is a constant of proportionality. Introducing this value of Q in eq 13 gives elimination efficiency = K D ,41 Elimination efficiency, in the terminology of Dahl-strom, means the diameter of particles, in microns, which divide equally between the underflow and the overflow. This denomination is regrettable and it would be preferable to call it diameter of separation or characteristic size or any other name connoting a size rather than an efficiency. Whatever the name used, the above equation shows a slow increase in the fineness of separation when the diameter of the cyclone decreases. For example, if a 14-in. cyclone gives a 400-mesh separation (37 microns), geometrically similar cyclones, having the same pressure drop will give separations at the sizes shown below.

The Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act (58 Stat., 190; 30 U.S.C. Sup., Secs. 321- 325) was approved by Congress April 5, 1944; it directed the Bureau of Mines to build demonstration plants to produce synthetic liquid fuels from coal, oil shale, and agricultural products. The most important oil-shale de- posits in the United States are in the Green River formation of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. The oil shale of western Colorado generally is more amenable to exploitation, more persistent, and apparently richer than elsewhere in the Rocky Mountain Region. It occurs at the top of a high plateau surrounded by bold, nearly vertical escarpments 500 to 600 ft in height. The top 400 to 500 ft of these escarpments comprises an oil-shale measure that averages 15 gal of shale oil per ton; the bottom 70 to 100 ft of the measure, called the Mahogany Ledge, averages over 30 gal per ton. The full measure in a 1000-square-mile area is estimated to contain 300 billion barrels of shale oil;' the Mahogany Ledge is estimated to contain 100 billion barrels of oil. T HE OPEN FORUM on this subject called by Mr. Hoover at the recent meeting of the Institute' brought out a large number of very able papers, and a very full discussion of all the problems involved. The criticisms of the bituminous industry were: 1. That it was over-developed with the possible output nearly 50 per cent. in excess of the present requirements; that during the summer there were plenty of cars and no orders, and during the winter there were plenty of orders but no cars. 2. That the mines were not properly developed from an engineering standpoint, and that the recovery of the coal varies from 50 per cent. to 95 per cent. 3. That this industry, employing over 600,000 men, could, if running full time, release 100,000 men for other work. 4. That the studies made by the engineers of the Fuel Administration showed that the cost of production increased with a loss of time and that with a 50 per cent. operation the increase in cost was about 40 per cent.

The need for a practical method of deciding upon new alloy steel analyses to widen its markets was the problem facing the Chrome Steel Works at the beginning of 1927. In addition to determining the physical properties of the alloys under consideration, it was necessary to test their value in service. Small melts of steel in a crucible, from which test specimens could be made, were insufficient to determine more than physical properties, therefore actual castings and ingots had to be made before the products could be placed in service. Furthermore, to save further experimental work, it was desirable that these heats should be made on a "pilot" basis; that is, actually duplicating regular open-hearth furnace practice. Therefore a one-ton (2000-lb.) acid open-hearth furnace was built. Furnace Design There are no special features in the design of this furnace. Standard acid open-hearth practice is followed, with the reproportioning of the dimensions necessitated by its small size; notably, a considerably increased length in proportion to width in order to get proper flame propagation. After the first heat was made it was found that the check-ers were insufficient. The checker chambers were increased in size and the checker openings were made much smaller. The furnace was started late in March, 1927, and made 65 heats. Experimental work was then stopped unti1, the data accumulated could be worked up and summarized. The run was resumed in November and the furnace is still operating, having made at this writing 60 additional heats. For the last series of runs, there was some rebuilding of both the furnace itself and the checkers. Slag pockets were added. Fig. 1 shows details of construction; Fig. 2, the general appearance. All designing was done by the operating and engineering staff. Construction materials were those available around the plant. The reversing valve is a standard butterfly type taken from an old furnace. The slag pockets and checkers are cleaned by digging down to arched openings which have been bricked up.

CENTRIFUGAL force has been utilized for the dewatering of fine coal for over 50 years by means of machines commonly called centrifugal dryers. In any centrifuge the coal and water are subjected to a spinning action which usually inctedtocreases in intensity as the coal progresses through the machine. This spinning action, or the centrifugal force that it induces, tears water away from coal particles and produces a dewatered coal. The effectiveness of the dewatering action for any particular machine is governed by the size-consist of the coal and the centrifugal force imparted to the water on the coal. Four makes of centrifuge are currently being used to dewater fine bituminous coal in the United States. These include the vertical, basket-screen C.M.I. (Centrifugal and Mechanical Industries) Carpenter, Reineveld, and the horizontal solid-bowl Bird. The C.M.I. and Reineveld centrifuges are similar in construction and are variations of the Elmore centrifuge, varying principally in the slope of the basket, operating speed, size of perforations in the basket, and diameter of the basket. The same operating description suffices for both. These centrifuges are made up of two rotating elements, an outside conical screen frame and an inside solid cone which carries spiral pusher blades. The screen frame is supported by a hollow shaft, and the solid cone by a spindle shaft passing through the hollow shaft. Both the screen frame and the solid cone rotate at high speeds; the solid cone, with its scraping flights, rotating somewhat more slowly than the screen. The wet coal enters the machine at the top, falls on the cone, and is thrown against the screen by centrifugal force. The coal slides down the screen until it meets the upper end of the flights, where it is moved slowly along the flights until discharged at the bottom. The elfluent passes through the sieve basket or screen and discharges into a launder. The Carpenter centrifuge consists of a conical rotating element with a vertical axis, built up of three rows of perforated stainless-steel plates or stainless-steel wedge-wire or round-wire sections cut and rolled to conform to the surface of the cone. Wet material is delivered to a conical hopper inside the centrifuge casing and is distributed in a thin, even layer over the inner surface of the cone by a disk mounted on the rotor shaft. Impacting of the coal against the screen and the centrifugal force exerted as the material moves downwards creates a dewatering effect. The moisture is forced through the coal bed and then through the perforated plates of the basket, collecting in a circular trough built into the centrifuge. The effluent is conducted from the trough through the centrifuge casing by outlet pipes. The dewatered coal is discharged over the inside bottom edge of the rotor. The Bird centrifuge consists of a tank or truncated conical shell, which is revolved at the desired speed by means of a drive sheave. A screw conveyor rotates inside the cone or bowl at a slightly lower speed in the same direction of rotation. The feed entrance, in the center of the large end of the truncated cone, is high enough to allow formation of a pool of slurry. Adjustable effluent-discharge ports are located in the large end of the bowl so the level of the liquid can be regulated. The solids are moved forward by the screw conveyor as fast as deposited and carried above the level of the pool for an interval before leaving the bowl. Dean, Zickrick and Nix have called attention to the perpetuation in the literature of several erroneous data, such as a eutectic temperature of 228° C. at 12.5 per cent. antimony, instead of 247° at 13 per cent. The series is given as a classic example of a straight eutectiferous series in such late books as those of Heyn and Grossmann,2 Jeffries and Archer,3 Guillet and Portevin4 Pulsifer,5 Rosenhain,6 and Liddell,7 as well as the somewhat earlier works of Hofman (1918), Wang (1909) and Williams (1920). The work of Dean has definitely showed a solid solution of antimony in lead at about 2.5 per cent. antimony. While lecturing to a class in general metallurgy at the University of Idaho, the writer had the students prepare a series of lead-antimony alloys for the purpose of illustrating methods of thermal analysis. Proper proportions of powdered antimony (sold as C.P.) and test lead were mixed and melted in graphite crucibles under a reducing cover. Cooling

INASMUCH as the arrangements for the preparation of the review of progress and new developments in the field of industrial minerals (non-metallics) were not made until early December, the writing of this review could not be completed in time to appear in this issue and will, therefore, appear in the February issue. However, we desire to call attention to the steadily increasing importance of this group of mineral substances. The recent book, "Industrial Minerals and Rocks," published by the Institute, lists 47 principal varieties of nonmetallic minerals to which may be added several more of lesser importance. Because of the wide variety of uses to which many of these industrial minerals are put, it is difficult to classify them into categories, but to mention a few examples which indicate the widespread industrial employment of these minerals and their products, one may cite: the use of limestone, gravel, sand, clay products, lime, cement, and gypsum in the construction industry; fluorspar, lime, salt, borax, and sulphur in the chemical industry; diamond, corundum, emery, garnet, flint, quartz sand, tripoli. and diatomite in the abrasive industry; fluorspar, limestone, and magnesite in the metallurgical industry; clay, feldspar, fluorspar, flint, chalk, and limestone in the ceramic industry; and asbestos, gypsum, mica, vermiculite, magnesia, diatomite, and rock wool in the heat, sound and elec-
