Stress corrosion is defined and certain examples are illustrated. A number of test methods, to determine the resistance of materials to stress corrosion, are being developed at Wright Field. The criterion as to the validity of a method is stated. Three types of specimens and the method of stressing each type are described. Five different corrosive conditions are set forth. The results of tests to date, although too few for any general conclusions to be arrived at, are presented. The program for the continuation of the investigation is indicated. A bibliography is included. The development of the method of loading a cantilever-type specimen, so that a nearly constant stress at a large deflection may be realized, is presented as Appendix I.

A technical evaluation of actual performance of the preparation facilities at Beaver Consolidated Coal Co.'s Stinson plant is presented, with special emphasis on sulfur reduction in 1-1/2 x 3/8 in., 3/8 in. x 28 mesh, and 28 mesh x 0 size fractions. Evaluation of the heavy medium section of the plant and the treatment of the 28 mesh x 0 coal is included. Design criteria considered for sizing and selection of equipment required to process 1-3/4 million tpy of raw coal on coals of divergent washability characteristics are summarized.

OUTOKUMPU, a large copper mine in eastern Finland, has the distinction of being one of the few important mines in the world discovered by a geologist the late Otto Triistedt, of the Geological Sur- vey of Finland, having found the out- clop in 1910 by tracing glacial ore boulders, some of which had been carried as far as fifty kilometres. As the mine had no connection with either railways or waterways and the possibilities of transport were poor, the owners first tried the Hybinette hydrometallurgical process to extract the copper. The raw ore was finely crushed, treated by a sulphatizing roast. and then leached. The resulting solution was electrolyzed, using lead anodes. This experimental plant, having a capacity of 10,000 tons (all Ions are metric tons in this paper) of raw ore and producing 300 to LEO0 tons of electrolytic copper annually, was built in 1913 and run until dis-

UINQUESTIONABLY the petroleum industry not only can supply the world's present oil requirements but even can meet a considerable increase in demand if it should come. The United States produced last year 1 1/3 billion barrels of crude oil, or more than 60 per cent of the world's total. It could have provided more, if needed, because we has a large shut-in crude producing capacity. Our refining capacity of 4,500,000 0 barrels per day is more than 2 per cent above our average refinery run for 1940. Adequate crude supplies and manufacturing facilities also exist outside of the United States. Large crude reserves exist in South America, in Iran and Iraq, in Russia and Romania, in Sumatra and adjacent islands. The refineries of the Dutch West Indies, of Iran, and of the Netherland East Indies are well located in relation to crude reserves and world trade lanes. Furthermore, flexibility in the manufacturing facilities permits adjustment of yields to meet a considerable range in variations between demands for products. Only with regard to 100-octane aviation gasoline is there any apparent refinery problem. Even here so far as this country is concerned, additional refining facilities can be installed well within the time that would be required to turn out the airplane engines which will use this super fuel.

An analysis of the semiconductor injection laser is presented which is based on a phenomenological model using device and material parameters. The intent of the laser threshold analysis is not to predict from theory the actual threshold current density but rather to provide a logical means of interpreting experimental results. The device and material parameters have been selected such that they describe both the threshold conditions and quantum efficiency of the lasev. A technique is proposed whereby the current required to obtain a population inversion is predicted from device 1-V characteristics. Experimental data are presented which support the analysis. THIS investigation is concerned with the characteristics of GaAs lasers fabricated in this laboratory. However, the assumptions used in these calculations should not limit their application to GaAs alone. It is felt that the analysis is sufficiently general to be useful in describing the operation of other semiconductor-laser materials. ANALYSIS heavily doped semiconductors to be considered. The absorption and/or generation of optical radiation may be completely specified in terms of q(E) and the probability functions f,,(E) and f,(E) which define the occupancy of the valence-band and conduction-band levels, respectively. The symbols used in this analysis are listed at the end. Following the approach of all' it can be shown that the effective gain coefficient, g, in the plane of a forward-biased P -N junction is g(E)=-ai@)[1-fv(E)-fc(E)] [1I In particular Eq. If the analysis is limited to the P-type side of the laser junction, the function q(l -f,,) is recognized as the band-to-band absorption in the P-type material at thermal equilibrium. Under forward-bias conditions the function f, is determined by the electron quasi Fermi level in P-type material. For sufficiently large forward bias the second term in Eq. [3] will become dominant and net gain will result; i.e., g will become positive. SINCE Maxwell1 first considered the self-diffusion process in 1872 its importance in the kinetic theory of matter has been recognized. Until the discovery of isotopes in 1913, a direct measurement of this quantity seemed impossible. The only information that could be gathered indirectly was for gaseous systems for which the kinetic theory was well developed. When methods of direct observation be-came available, investigations on self-diffusion were carried out in condensed phases. In metals these data are presumably of potential importance in the study of recovery, recrystallization, creep, sintering, and related phenomena. Following the pioneer work of Von Hevesy2 and his collaborators, who determined the rate of self-diffusion in lead with the naturally occurring thorium B isotope, several metals have been investigated. Pb, Ag³, Au.6,5, and Cu6,7,8,9 are examples of isotropic crystals existing in only one phase modification. Anisotropy of diffusion has been demonstrated in Bil6 and Znll. This paper is a study of a single metal in two allotropic forms and also of self-diffusion in a body-centered cubic lattice. Despite the fact that the measurements in each of the papers cited on self-diffusion in copper seem to be internally consistent to about 10 to 15 pet, the curves reported by different authors differ by factors of 2 to 4 at the same temperatures. This uncertainty may account, in part, for the failure to establish a successful correlation between the self-diffusion rates and other physical characteristics of the metals. No satisfactory theory of metallic self- diffusion has as yet been proposed to account for all the existing data and to permit estimation in other metals. Experimental Part: Two units of radioactive iron were used in these experiments, each a mixture of Fe53 and Fe59 (12). Fe53 decays by K electron capture and the emission of an X ray with a half life of about 4 years. Fe59 emits two beta spectra, one with a maximum energy of 0.26 Mev, the other 0.46 Mev, and gamma rays of 1.1 and 1.3 Mev, with a half life of about 44 days. They were present in nearly equal concentration initially. The composite half life started at about 50 days and increased as the Fe59 decayed, leaving Fe55 relatively more abundant. After aging a year, the half life was too long to measure significant decay in a month. The absorption properties also changed with time. Because of the importance of the absorption coefficient in the diffusion calculations, it was necessary to determine this quantity frequently over the period during which these experiments were carried out. This correction was unsuspected at the time of publication of notesl3 on this work and accounts for the discrepancy in alpha iron and for part of the discrepancy in gamma iron.* * The data in the present paper supersede those given in the notes entirely. In one note the scale of log D was inadvertently reversed. In addition to the correction for the drift in absorption coefficient, the D values for gamma iron at low temperatures were high owing to insuficient correction for diffusion occurring during heating and cooling through the high temperature part of the alpha range at a rate much slower than that employed in the runs reported here. The high temperature alpha rates are much higher than the low temperature gamma rates and correspond to large equivalent times at these temperatures. These experiments were discarded and new measurements taken. Independent experiments with the same activity units indicated a radioactive contaminant in the iron, but exhaustive attempts to isolate and identify it chemically failed. These experiments? indicate † These experiments will be discussed in a later publication from this laboratory. that the contaminant represented only a trace of little importance in the diffusion results. The active iron was plated from an iron chloride solution. Enough of the solution was dropped on a 1% in. square of filter paper to wet it thoroughly.

CONSIDERING the importance of the steel trade and the strategic position occupied in it by the Birmingham District, it may be surprising to many to realize that even the first pig iron smelted with coke was made in Alabama on Feb. 28, 1876, although merchant pig iron had been produced in Rockwood, Tenn., in 1867, a plant which is still in active operation. The heavy deposit of Clinton ore extending from Pennsylvania into Alabama, varying greatly in accessibility on account of geological changes such as erosion or anticlinal upthrow, varies equally as much in thickness and in quality. The brown ores extensively scattered through the South also vary materially in quality, some being relatively low in phosphorus and high in manganese, and vice versa. The red ore varies materially in phosphorus, but the iron produced from these ores was always considered to be too high in phosphorus for treatment by acid Bessemer or open hearth and did not contain sufficient for the basic Bessemer process. Under these conditions there remained only the basic open hearth as a possibility, and for many years it appeared impossible to use it, because, with coke smelted iron, the silicon was too high to permit its use in basic lined furnaces.

THE recent completion by the United States Aluminum Company of a $4,000,000 addition to its plant at Massena, N. Y., consisting of a large blooming mill and structural mill, gives this organization, a subsidiary of the Aluminum Company of America, the distinction of possessing the largest aluminum rolling mill in the world, as well as the first mil1 in this country to roll aluminum exclusively. The plant is located near the international boundary line between Canada and the United States, about 3 miles from the St. Lawrence River, to take advantage of the development of cheap hydroelectric power which is needed not only for the manufacture of structural shapes from the ingots, but in the reduction of alumina to the metal by the well-known Hall process as well. A power canal from the St. Lawrence River to the power house on the Grasse River at the plant provides for the waterflow, which, coupled with a drop of 47 ft. in 2% miles, generates 80,000 hp. through vertical turbines. An additional 60,000 hp. is purchased.

MANY papers and reports have been devoted to the geology and ore deposits of the Ducktown district, Tennessee, especially the complete report by W. H. Emmons and F. B. Laney, published as Professional Paper 139, by the U. S. Geological Survey. The present paper discusses the work of the geological organization of the Tennessee Copper Co., which is based on the field work of the above paper and the consulting work of W. H. Emmons. The Ducktown basin lies in the southeastern corner of Tennessee and extends a short distance into Georgia and North Carolina. All productive mines are contained in an area of 15 sq. mi. in the center of this basin, which is an undulating plateau at an elevation of 1650 to 1800 ft. above sea level. It is surrounded by the relatively high mountains of the southern Appalachian region. The rocks are of early Cambrian age. Deposition of the ores probably took place during the latter part of the Paleozoic era. The ore deposits are rudely tabular to lens-shaped bodies of massive sulfide, varying from a few feet to over 200 ft. in width. In general they all strike northeast and dip southeast at angles from 45° to 70°. Locally, where affected by folding and faulting, the variations in dip may be even greater. The lodes usually are parallel at distances of from one-half to one mile measured normal to the strike. The deposits are a replacement of a fairly continuous bed or a series of disconnected limestone lenses, highly folded and somewhat faulted, which probably represent the same stratigraphic horizon.

SOME of the reactions and procedures upon which modern techniques in the production of metal powders are based were used for 2000 years by the ancients to reduce iron and other metals from their ores. Despite this, however, the art of powder metallurgy is relatively new and probably stems from the introduction of incandescent electric lamp filaments. Attempts to improve upon Edison's carbon filaments led to the production, in order. of metallic filaments of osmium. tantalum.. and finally of tungsten, which ha, replaced the others and is the commercial product of today. These metallic filaments were originally manufactured by the extrusion and sintering of a mixture of the metal or its oxide with a reducing agent which also served as a binder. The fall meeting at Chicago was not only well attended but particularly characterized by the virility and scope of the discussions at the various sessions. The program for the February meeting indicates a similar interest in technological developments. The Blast-Furnace Committee continues to have the hearty support of the industry with discussions of such a nature as to be of real help to the operator as well ass the technologist. The work of the Open-Hearth Committee continues to be outstanding, with ever increasing attendance and ever mounting interest in the meetings. Formation of a conference on the physical chemistry of steelmaking has given those interested in this phase of work an organization allowing the same

For the past three strenuous years you have contributed wholeheartedly to meeting the problems of increased production. You have conducted scientific and technical investigations and research, recommended experiments. and gathered all the available and valuable information possible to gain the desired objectives. You have had many obstacles and difficulties to overcome. In the early days of your organization, there was some lack of co-operation from the industry itself-perhaps, for example, some failure to recognize the mutual advantages of free exchange of experiences and information. But regardless of any hindrances, you have made many and valuable contribution which have tended to make iron and steel manufacture leas of an art and more of a science.

INTRODUCTION This paper defines equity as the issuance of a permanent interest in the business on a broadly distributed basis. As such, it excludes the issuance of equity to either a merchant bank or to another corporation. Nearly twenty years ago the equity markets were very simple: The instruments used were primarily common shares, convertible debentures or convertible preferred shares. Another equity-type option often used, especially by junior companies, was the sale of joint venture interests. Issue sizes were generally in the order of $25 - $100 million and issues were syndicated primarily in North America and Europe by one or two investment dealers. Mining corporations today benefit from a market with much more depth. Issues are syndicated by dealers on a truly international basis, and issue sizes now often range up to $300 million. Moreover, dealers are now willing to take significant risk in buying the issues for redistribution. This discussion of trends in equity markets will encompass: 1) common shares 2) warrants to buy common shares 3) convertible debentures 4) commodity backed instruments A review follows of events that affect the mining industry and investment dealers as they have a bearing on the equity markets for the metal producers. FACTORS AFFECTING THE MINING INDUSTRY The current business cycle, up to October 1987, had been characterised by a buoyant stock market and depressed base metal prices. Mining companies entered this period with weak balance sheets and little prospect of cash flows meeting capital needs. The issuance of equity and the sale of assets were used extensively to reduce debt to manageable levels. During this period, the relative high price for gold, and more important, the very high earnings and cash flow multiples afforded to gold producers, caused companies to target gold as the only game in town. The need for capital to acquire and develop gold properties prompted an unprecedented volume of equity issues. (Burns Fry led or co-managed over $1 billion of mining equity issues per year during this period). This high demand for equity capital by the industry prompted an increase in the use of equity instruments, such as commodity backed instruments. In addition, government tax incentive programs in Canada, such as flow-through shares, allowed smaller companies to raise significantly more equity than would otherwise have been possible. Over $1 billion in flow-through equity was raised in 1987 alone. The abundance of flow-through capital in Canada made it easy to form a new company. One flow-through share fund developed a system of providing the working capital required for a company to be eligible to receive flow-through share capital so that an entrepreneur required only a mining property to get started. Many new companies were formed and several flourished in a buoyant stock market environment to the point that market capitalizations grew to $100 million or more. The current period is in stark contrast to that before October 1987. The equity markets are generally available to the resource industry only on a window basis and only for senior companies and for special situations. The industry is benefitting from buoyant metal prices, and bankers are anxious to provide debt capital. Investment dealers previously processing several equity issues

Several high-temperature eutectics of cobalt and nickel alloys were modified by small additions of selected elements. Thes-e alloys were compared to unmodified melts for microstructural variations. A few modified compositions were selected on the basis of structure and their tensile and stress-rupture behavior determined. The results of stress-rupture tests in air at 1800 F and room-temperature tensile tests of four high-temperature eutectics showed modification capable of producing substantial improvements in properties. The microstructures were altered and mechanical properties improved by: a.) dispersing a subordinate phase more uniformly throughout the matrix; b) replacing large continuous -network or platelike constituents with small equiaxed discontinuous phases; and c) by forming new, finely divided phases. tHE term "modification" is most commonly used to describe the refinement in microstructure of the Al-Si eutectic that occurs as a result of rapid cooling from the melt or on slow cooling after treatment with small amounts of sodium.1 "Modification" has also been used to describe the change from flake to spheroidal graphite in the austenite-graphite eutectic of cast iron.2 This change of graphite shape is accomplished by small additions of cerium or magnesium.3 Other systems have also been shown to be capable of modification, for example: Pb-Sn by copper;4 Al-Cu by sodium;5 Al-Mn by sodium;5 and Pb-Sb by aluminum.5 Although modification of Al-Si alloys and cast irons is usually accompanied by improved mechanical properties, a general definition of modification has been suggested to include the effect of small quantities of impurity elements on the microstructures of all eutectic alloys, regardless of the effect on the mechanical properties.6 In this paper, the term "modification" is employed in a broad sense to include the formation of third phases or even the supplanting of one of the binary eutectic phases by a third phase. The mechanism of modification, as for any solidification phenomenon, must be considered primarily in terms of nucleation and growth. Although both nuclea-tion and growth mechanisms are required to explain all the phenomena observed in connection with the solidification of modified eutectics, various investigators have usually favored one or the other.7"16 It has been shown that modification of a binary eutectic can be effected by addition of a solute element that has greatly different distribution coefficients or k values in the two phases of the eutectic. Under these conditions, differences in the temperatures at the solid-liquid interfaces of the two phases retard the growth of one phase with respect to the other.4 It has also been shown that increased undercooling favors a transition from a rodlike eutectic to a globular eutectic.17 A mechanism proposed for the transition from lamellar to rodlike eutectics depends on the concept of constitutional super cooling.18 The modification of eutectic alloys may be of interest for high-temperature service as well as at room temperature. Although "high-temperature eutectic alloys" may appear to be a contradiction in terms, many eutectic systems, including those studied in this work, have melting points in excess of 2400°F. One of the mechanisms by which high-temperature alloys are strengthened is dispersion of a relatively brittle phase such as an oxide, carbide, or an inter-metallic compound throughout a ductile matrix. For a given volume fraction of dispersed phase, strength is increased by decreasing the size and spacing of the dispersed particles.19'20 Furthermore, room-temperature ductility may also be increased by changing the shape of a brittle dispersed phase from platelike to equiaxed or spheroidal.8 Overaging and redissolving of the secondary phase limit the maximum temperature to which precipitation-hardened alloys can be used. However, in a binary eutectic system, both phases coexist up to the melting point. Although all eutectic structures are not completely stable,21 a dispersion-hardened cast high-temperature alloy might result if a fine distribution of one of the eutectic phases could be obtained during solidification. An additional reason for interest in eutectic alloys is their excellent castability.22 Since eutectic alloys, like pure metals, freeze at a single temperature rather than over a range of temperatures, their castability is superior to solid-solution alloys with long liquidus to solidus ranges. The purpose of this research was to study the effects of small solute additions on the microstructure and mechanical properties of a number of high-melting-point eutectic compositions.

The market at present supplied by shipments from the phosphate districts of Quebec, Ontario, and New York State requires high-grade ore, carrying from 75 per cent. to 90 per cent. of phosphate of lime. In sorting out such material by hand, much valuable phosphate is necessarily left in the "culls" or refuse, besides which, much phosphate-rock of low-grade is not now mined at all, because it cannot be made available by the crude method of cobbing and hand-sorting. The utilization of such material, which would, of course, greatly benefit this industry, requires either a mechanical separation or a chemical process which would concentrate the phosphate in a form suitable for agriculture. Considering the rich phosphate now shipped as the first class, we may arrange the lower grades in three classes, as follows: Second Class.—Cull-ore from the first class, and the mass of deposits having, as gangue, pyroxene or hornblende. The following table gives the hardness and specific gravity of the minerals concerned: Hardness Spec. gravity. It may be reduced to fine powder by successive treatment in a rock-breaker and a Sturtevant or Frisbee-Lucop mill, or other suitable apparatus, and in this condition it could be largely used by applying it freely upon exhausted clay soils, such as occur in Quebec and Ontario. EIGHT years ago the Hecla mine, a lead-silver producer, situated at Burke, Idaho, was producing ore from but two levels, the 300- and the 600-ft. All hoisting was done with a 12- by 16-in. slide-valve, double-reel, hoist. The hoist was being worked to its capacity and was unsuitable for hoisting from greater depths. As the work of opening a new level was about to be started, it became necessary to remodel the then-existing equipment or install a new hoist. The recent advent of electricity from Spokane had made available a cheaper power than steam. By a series of tests conducted throughout the Coeur d'Alène district, it was found that it cost $109 per year to generate a horse-power with steam. Electric power was to be had for $50 a horse-power per year. It was decided to substitute for the engines a motor-drive, of sufficient capacity to operate from the 900-ft. level, and ultimately install an entirely new hoist. After disconnecting the engines, installing a new shaft, and making a few minor changes, a 300-h-p., 2,300-volt, 514-rev. per min., variable-speed motor of the induction type was geared to the reel-shaft. The reels were supplied with 3/8 by 4-in. flat rope, and the duty of the hoist was about as follows: Cage, 1,700; ore, 2,600; car, 1,400; rope, 2,250; total, 7,950 pounds. The Bristol ammeter chart, Fig. 1, shows the combined current-consumption of the hoist- and mine-motors. The large intermittent load is clearly shown ; this produced harmful fluctuations in the voltage of the long, lightly-loaded, 60,000-volt transmission-line from Spokane to the Coeur d'Alènes. The power company received no compensation for the increased cost of producing power for this intermittent or fluctuating load. In order to protect its system from similar excessive

In 1972, coal mine productivity was in steady decline and labor and maintenance costs were spiralling upward. Yet, despite this sad state of affairs, nowhere in the US at that time was there a comprehensive and coordinated coal research and development plan in the offing. The Bureau of Mines had not yet been charged with such a responsibility, and industry was content to rely on machinery manufacturers for innovations. It was during this period that Bethlehem Steel Corp. determined that a new approach to coal mining research was needed for the industry as well as for the company itself. After studying Bethlehem's own mining practices, the state-of-the-art of mining research elsewhere, and development work by manufacturers, a comprehensive research package was presented to company management in late 1972. The ideas and experience of many operating and management personnel in the company contributed to the formulation of the final plan as approved.

The self-diffusion coefficient of chromium in various alloys in the iron-chromium system has been measured. A variation in Dofrom 10-4 for pure chromium to a maximum of 102 near 60 pct Cr appears with a range of activation energy from about 50 to 80 kcal per mol. The general pattern of behavior observed is not consistent with present theories of diffusion by a vacancy mechanism. Suggestions are made for further clarifying experiments. RECENT work on the self-diffusion of chromium,' ?-uranium2-4 and ß-zirconium,23, 26 has indicated that these elements have very low Do (10-3 to 10-4) compared to that conventionally expected for vacancy diffusion. Pound et al.5 have suggested that this may be due to ring diffusion being operative, and have proposed a model which gives Do of the correct order of magnitude. The essential difference between this model and Zener's earlier model6 is that whereas Zener assumes tight coupling between atoms in a ring to establish a vibrational frequency, Pound's model allows the atoms to vibrate essen- tially each in their own normal modes. The probability of each atom moving in the correct direction to cause a ring of n atoms to rotate by 2p/n must then be calculated as a "synchronal entropy" which may be -20 e.u. for a 4 atom ring. In iron, the latest determinations of self-diffusion yield Do in the range 18 to 522.7-9 The most accurate is probably that of Borg and Birchenall8 which is 118 ± 3. This value is not inconsistent with that expected for a vacancy mechanism. Since iron and chromium are very closely similar in size, are both transition metals, and their solution is thermodynamically ideal at temperatures of interest in diffusion, it appeared that a determination of self-diffusion coefficients, Do and Q as a function of composition would be of substantial interest to diffusion theory. The following measurements were made with this purpose in mind.

Columbia College has the honor of founding the first well-organized School of Mines in America. The University of Michigan, however, shared with her the honor of graduating the first class, in 1867. Prof. Thomas Egleston was the pioneer in the new movement. He drew up the original plan for the Columbia School of Mines in 1863, and was in 1864 appointed its first professor. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology turned out a class of mining students a year later, and others followed in the order of their first graduating class, as shown in Table I., condensed from the Engineering News of August 11, 1892. Besides those mentioned, mining schools have been organized in the States of Arizona and Nevada, and more or less instruction is advertised in connection with other engineering schools. It will be noticed that Columbia easily heads the list with reference to the number of graduates; the Massachusetts Institute of Technology stands second ; the California University third, and then follow Lehigh, Washington University, the University of Michigan, Lafayette College, Michigan Mining School, Missouri, Colorado and the others. The total number of graduates from these 16 schools in 26 years, has been 871, or an average of 33 per year; but as all these schools give a partial education to many who do not graduate, it is probable that from 2000 to 3000 mining students have received from them considerable training. An interesting comparison of the rate of growth of the engineering schools has been recently instituted by the Engineering News, for the period between 1860 and 1892. Table 11. shows that civil engineering had the advantage in numbers from the start, and maintained the advantage until 2890, when it was surpassed by mechanical engineering.
