Underground bituminous coal mining is a large and significant industry within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and it has a legacy of environmental consequence. For example, in 2008, 13.5 acres (5.5 hectares) of land were undermined by longwall mining every day. Laws and regulations have been promulgated requiring companies involved in this industry to remedy mining damage caused to homes, businesses, and land; replace impaired water supplies; and repair impacts to streams and wetlands. The regulations and technical standards set by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) have been put in place to assure that coal operations comply with ACT 54 of the Bituminous Mine Subsidence & Land Conservation Act and other related legislation. These regulations and standards require operations to address impacts when a mining permit is submitted and as permits are modified and extended. One of the special provisions of ACT 54 is the requirement by the PA DEP to produce an assessment of the surface impacts of mining every five years. The University of Pittsburgh was contracted by the PA DEP to perform the 3rd assessment, which spanned from August 21, 2003, to August 20, 2008. This paper details the findings related to surface structure undermined during this period. A total of 3,735 structures were tracked. Four-hundred-fiftysix reported effects were found, and each required additional information and analysis. The majority of the reported effects were associated with eight longwall mines. Characteristics of the structures were analyzed and discussed, with special attention to those with reported effects. The number of undamaged and reportedly damaged structures (i.e., dwelling, barn, commercial building, etc.) undermined during the assessment period were listed. Lastly, the resolution status and type of resolution were analyzed for all structure reported effects.

Most of the used cathode ray tube (CRT) glass in Japan, which contains lead oxide, was exported and recycled in overseas factories of new CRTs. However, domestic treatment and recycling of waste CRT glass has become necessary because overseas CRT factories have shut down and exports of CRT glass have stopped. Some of the waste CRT glass recycled domestically is charged in lead blast furnaces instead of silica flux, because there is no local reproduction route for glass that contains lead. However, the mass of CRT glass that can be treated in this manner is limited because of its high silica content. Consequently, additional treatment methods for waste CRT glass are required so that more can be used as a lead smelting material. In this study, waste CRT glass was treated with hydrofluoric acid to dissolve the silica contained in the glass, and the dissolved lead was recovered by precipitation. Lead metal was recovered by electrodeposition from the prepared hexafluorosilicic acid solution.

This paper reports the effect of using High Density Poly-Ethylene (HDPE)/coke blends on the reduction behaviour of Mn3O4 to MnO at 1000°C. The results suggest that CH4 release increases with increasing HDPE addition. The results show that the rapid release of methane, over only the initial five minutes, limited the interaction of Mn3O4/MnO with CH4. With the devolatilisation of HDPE there was increased porosity in samples containing HDPE, assumed to be the major factor in differences of reduction rates.

The design of foundations for the tall buildings of lower Manhattan rely on the use of high capacity, rock anchors to resist overturning forces generated by lateral loads from wind, earth, water and, to a lesser degree, seismic forces. Once completed, the proposed towers at the World Trade Center (WTC) site will be among the tallest buildings in New York City. The towers are exposed to coastal winds and from several levels of below grade structure soil and water loads. The design loading required under the current New York City Building Code (NYCBC) is similar to the requirements of the building code used to design the original WTC Twin Towers. We will compare how rock anchors were deployed in the Twin Towers and how they are used in the new buildings. Changes to the building code are less significant that the changes to the design of the structure; that is how the outer skin or perimeter structure interacts with the building core. The result is a significant increase in the number of rock anchors required for the new buildings when compared to those installed in the original WTC Twin Towers.

The target of this study was to clarify the role of lead on the dissolution of gold in the (NH4)2S2O3-Cu leaching system via chronopotentiometry, linear sweep voltammetry and chronoamperometry. It was found that the dissolution of gold was significantly increased with lead concentration up to 10 mg/1 Pb in the system of 0.1 M (NH4)2S2O3 and 50 mg/1 Cu. \/oltammograms suggested that the anodic dissolution of gold was virtually independent of lead concentration in the range of 1-10 mg/1 in 0.1 M (NH4)2S2O3 solution while in solutions containing copper as well, addition of lead increased the anodic dissolution of gold.

With its new continental shelf beyond the exclusive economic zone, New Zealand is a country with just 4% of its territory above water. The other 96% is submerged. New Zealand's marine territory covers an area about three-quarters the size of Australia. This territory includes large portions of the Gondwana continent from which NZ separated more than 80 million years ago. This underwater land mass extends from the shores of New Zealand to a water depth of more than 5,000 m, is largely unexplored and is almost certainly the site of many large, untapped oil, gas and mineral deposits. Underwater oil and gas drilling is now a universal activity. Underwater mining is in its infancy and will become a major activity in the future, contributing greatly to the New Zealand economy. New hydrocarbon deposits will undoubtedly be discovered under the ocean floor in regions such as the Great South Basin located off Canterbury and Otago. Mineral deposits are also undoubtedly located within the oceanic crust of this underwater NZ continent. These are as yet unknown and unexplored. The oceanic crust north of the North Island is currently being extended through the subduction of the Pacific plate into the Tonga Kermadec trench and through the growth of a line of submarine volcanoes extending north to Tonga. Active submarine volcanism has led to the growth of ocean floor mineral deposits consisting of polymetallic sulphides with iron, copper, zinc and lesser gold, silver and other metals.

Al-Mg-Si alloys are widely used as medium-strength structural materials; extrusion is the most common processing route. In the present hot deformation investigation of a 6060 alloy, the microstructure of the alloy has been analyzed in the as-cast state, after homogenization heat treatment and after hot deformation by tensile tests in the range 400-490°C and 10-4 to 10-2s-1 on both as cast and homogenized alloys. After deformation the microstructure of the as-cast alloy exhibited cavitation. The flow curves at the lowest test temperature T show a gradual softening after a stress peak, being more evident for the alloy deformed in the homogenized state in association with a high yield stress; at higher T a plateau is attained which is lower as T rises and strain rates decrease. For each fixed T, the ductility decreases as strain rate increases for the homogenized alloy whereas, for the as cast alloy, it rises with strain rate. Constitutive analysis gives Q = 240kJ1mol for the homogenized alloy in agreement with published values; this indicates a more rapid strength decline with rising T than Al, suitable for good hot workability along with the lack of cavitation.

In-Situ Leaching (ISL) process plants are low cost producers for uranium deposits where the geology is suitable. In the 1970s, a three-year pilot ISL program occurred on gold ore from the Ajax Mine, Cripple Creek District, Colorado, using a chloride and iodide solution [1]. The test was halted due to poor results. With gold and silver the international ISL progress has been slow; however the potential for low capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operating expenditure (OPEX) with large low grade deposits is real. Unless the metallurgy has been demonstrated there are significant risks which could be fatal flaws to an ISL gold or silver project. The metallurgy of gold ISL projects is far from simple and it is early days with project development.

Creating a unified co-simulation solution In this ground-breaking project, the Volvo Construction Equipment design team in Eskilstuna, Sweden, replaced its piecemeal department-by-department process with a single solution based on LMS Imagine.Lab AMESim. With one unified model, they could simulate the behavior of four major vehicle subsystems in wheel loaders and articulated haulers: hydraulics, powertrain, thermal management and the actual driver. Dust surveys were conducted at six underground coal mines to determine if deep-cutting practices expose face workers to higher levels of respirable dust. The surveyed mines were able to successfully mine deep cuts without significantly increasing the dust exposures of face workers. For exhausting face ventilation, field data indicate that scrubber airflow is the most important factor for controlling dust. Data collected for this study indicate that 20-mesh screens should be cleaned for every 40 ft of advance because 22% of the deep cuts surveyed for this study experienced a 20% to 35% decrease in scrubber airflow over the course of the cut. For blowing face ventilation, field data and past research indicate that dust control is aided by maintaining a proper curtain-to-scrubber airflow ratio of 1.0 (measured before scrubber activation) as well as a curtain setback distance that allows the miner operator to stand at the mouth of the curtain for the entire cut. Dust levels on the bolting faces did not appear to be affected by the longer cycles associated with deep-cut mining when good ventilation practices were used.

In this study, the statistical design of experiments (DOE) was applied to study and regulate the properties of near-eutectic Al-11%Si alloys. Develop regression equations for such response variables as hardness, yield stress, ultimate tensile stress, percent elongation, total cutting force, cutting power, and tool life together with other factors which, include the percentage composition of the alloying elements, and the requisite modification (Sr) level. These equations may be analyzed quantitatively to acquire an understating of the effects which the main variables and their interactions may have on the mechanical behaviour and the machinability of the alloy under investigation. The results reveal that increasing the levels of Cu and Fe content results in an increase in hardness, yield stress, and ultimate tensile strength in both modified and non-modified alloys. On the other hand, both Cu and Fe appear to affect the percentage elongation adversely, whereas the Sr-level has a positive effect on this parameter. It was found that Sr-levels have the most significant effect on the cutting forces and cutting power followed by the content in Fe and Cu. The results also reveal that the interaction coefficients of these variables have a significant effect on tool life compared to the main independent variables. This fact may be attributed to the formation of complex insoluble phases between Cu, Fe, Si, and Al as investigated using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) attached to an EDX analysis system. The accuracy of the regression equations in predicting the expected properties has been verified by carrying out random experiments in the range of variation of these variables.

"The two dominant metallurgical problems in treating most base metal sulphide concentrates in both the chloride and sulphate system are iron removal and sulphur elimination, respectively [1-3]. In this paper the opportunities, limitations and fundamentals of the chloride metallurgy system are described against this background. Only the treatment of oxide and sulphide ores is considered. Both hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical unit process operations are highlighted, since most successful base metal processes are based on a combination of the two. Hence, an overview of the technical and also some economical aspects of chloride metallurgy are presented.This overview summarizes the successful applications of chloride metallurgy, but it will not give exhaustive process and plant descriptions. It predominantly focuses on the essential technical features of the metallurgical unit process operations, while providing numerous references separately."

However, India is rich in ores and mineral, but E-waste recycling is necessary due to the report of national and international studies, which cautioned on the generation, treatment and accumulation of e-waste in India. Current data indicate that the total domestic e-waste generation including imports is around 382979 MT, however waste available for recycling and actually recycled are 144143 MT and 19000 MT, respectively. In which recycling by non-formal and formal sector are 95% and 5%, respectively. On the other hand, India has developed expertise in handling verities of metallic wastes in an organized and safe manner. The development of individual process or combined processes for handling the e-waste is underway. Eco- friendly and energy-saving processes are necessary to comply with stringent environmental regulations. The paper includes the recent trend of e-waste generation, recycling process and its future prospects particularly in India.

The vertical distribution of platinum-group elements (PGE) in the Merensky and UG2 chromitite Reefs is highly variable, but does follow certain general patterns that allow the testing of geological models. In the Merensky reef, historically popular geological representations and interpretations have suggested that the mineralization occurs in a pegmatitic pyroxenite bounded by two chromitite layers. However, there are now enough published exceptions to this relationship to expose its fallacy. The vertical distribution of the PGE depends largely upon the separation between these two chromitite layers or the absence of one chromitite layer. Where separation is small or only one chromitite layer is present, there is considerable PGE mineralization in the footwall below the pyroxenite and lower chromitite layer. With increasing separation between the two chromitites, the mineral¬ization occurs progressively higher in the succession, and tends to track the upper chromitite layer. The view presented here is that the entire Merensky package is comprised of three events of magma emplacement, in which each has produced variable reaction with, and erosion of, the footwall, causing recrystallization of pyroxenite into pegmatitic pyroxenite. The magma then produced a chromitite layer followed by pyroxenite. Each chromitite layer is associated with some mineralization, which was extensively complemented by the subsequent formation of a sulphide liquid carrying PGE that trickled down through about 1 m of permeable crystal pile. The sulphide liquid formed after, not coincident with, the pyroxenite layers. The distribution of PGE in the UG2 chromitite shows up to three upward depletion sequences of PGE, also suggesting three events. The PGE are associated only with the chromite. The contribution from a sulphide liquid is considered to have been minimal for two reasons. Cu and Ni are extremely low in the UG2 which would not be expected if sulphides had been present. Also, by analogy with the Merensky, downward trickling of sulphides would have caused some PGE to be present in the footwall. There are some PGE in the footwall, but only where remnants of chromitite occur, and the hanging wall is lacking in PGE. In the northeastern Bushveld the UG2 chromitite is thinner than elsewhere, and there is a UG3 chromitite layer, not present elsewhere, that has a high Pt/Pd ratio. It is surmized that in the rest of the Bushveld the UG3 only appears to be absent because it has merged with the UG2 to produce the high Pt concentration at the top of the composite UG2. The non-accumulation of the package of pyroxenite-norite-anorthosite between the UG2 and UG3 in the northeastern Bushveld, which is not seen elsewhere, creates an interesting challenge to the formation of silicate layering in the complex. Safety nets have been used selectively in several South African mines over the years. Recently, however, an increased emphasis on mine safety has seen a resurgence of their utilization underground. This renewed interest has, however, also raised questions about the design and performance of these nets and their practical applications underground; these are the subjects of this paper. Generally, mine safety nets are used to protect personnel from falling rock in temporarily supported development ends, tunnels, ASGs and stopes. These diverse applications each require specific net designs, resulting in a wide product range. As a rule, however, mine safety nets need to carry specified static or dynamic loads with the least possible deformation. Because of the application-specific characteristics of mine safety nets, there is no South African national standard for them. Consequently, neither the SABS, nor the CSIR, performs standard tests on these components. In 2007, therefore, SIMRAC made available their Savuka facility for the testing of mine safety nets; the Savuka drop test became the accepted industry test standard for mine safety nets. From late 2007 to mid 2009, Norsenet, in collaboration with SRK Consulting, the designated operators of the site, conducted approximately 200 tests, which formed the core of Norsenet's database of safety net performance under various loading conditions. The test specimens comprised a wide range of net materials and config¬urations; the materials included: high density polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester, nylon, as well as a blend of polyester and polypropylene used primarily for reinforcement ropes. Net configurations encompassed the following parameters: net type, i.e., knotted nets or sewn nets; net strand type, i.e., braids, twines, or webbing; strand size; mesh size; mesh orientation, i.e., parallel or oblique to the net edge; net edge reinforcement, i.e., knotted, tied, with or without reinforcement ropes; internal reinforcement ropes, i.e., diagonal ropes and/or orthogonal ropes; as well as net attachment options, including loops and chainlinks. From the number of variables listed above, and the limited number of tests available, it can be appreciated that the findings of the test series required careful scrutiny. Nevertheless, principal performance factors clearly emerged: besides the obvious net mesh variables, such as net strand material, strand diameter and mesh size, it was the configuration of the reinforcement ropes and their attachment to the net panel which had the strongest influence on net performance. All the structural elements of a safety net need to work together to transfer the imposed load from the net panel, through the reinforcement ropes, to the net attachment points. In this load transference chain, the weakest link limits the strength of the structure. From this development work, Norsenet has gained valuable expertise to custom-design and manufacture nets to clients' specifications. The examples presented in the paper will also show the experience acquired in the installation of nets underground. Future work will include the establishment of a state-of-the-art net testing facility at Norsenet's factory in Vredenburg.. The vaporization thermodynamics of the aluminum-silicon carbides Al4SiC4 and Al8SiC7 were studied by the Bureau of Mines over the temperature range of approximately 1,500 to 1,700 K. Vapor pressures were measured by a Knudsen effusion-mass spectrometry technique in which powdered samples were effused from graphite crucibles through small orifices. For each compound, a total of six orifice diameters was tested to verify equilibrium within the cell. Aluminum, mass number 27, was the only vapor species detected over the range 4 to 200 amu. Experimental results are based on the following equations for incongruent decomposition: A14SiC4(cr) - 4A1(g) + SiC(a,hex) + 3C(gr); Al8SiC7(cr) - 8A1(g) + SiC(a,hex) + 6C(gr). The observed vapor pressure-temperature relationships determined with a cell orifice area of 2.0 x 10-3 cm2 for Al4SiC4 and 1.81 x 10-3 cm2 for A18SiC7 are the following: Log P - (-18,682/T) + 12.476, for Al4SiC4 (1,550 to 1,643 K) and Log P = (-19,308/T) + 12.421, for Al8SiC7 (1,526 to 1,784 K), with P in pascals and T in kelvins. Third-law analysis of the data provided the following heats of formation: A14SiC4 ?H at 298.15 K - -50.0 kcal/mol and A18SiC7 ?H at 298.15 K - -92.1 kcal/mol.

"With the development of industrial production, more and more wastewater containing high concentration ammonia nitrogen was discharge into the environmemt, which caused serious harm to the environmemt. Treating the wastewater has great significance to protect water resources. Using air-stripping combined with oxidation to uptake high concentration of ammonia nitrogen wastewater. The influence of operating parameters was investigated. Experimental results revealed that pH of solution, aeration time and aeration strength showed heavy influence on ammonia nitrogen removal. Air-stripping combined with oxidation can be considered as an alternative approach for the removal of high concentration of ammonia nitrogen from practical metallurgical wastewater. When pH was 11, aeration time 20 min, aeration strength 1040 Lh-1, and oxidation with 10 % NaClO solution 10 min, the initial ammonia nitrogen 2130 mgr1 could reduce to 12 mgr1. IntroductionThe rapid development of human activities has caused a worldwide increase of nitrogen in rivers, lakes and coastal waters. It leads to considerable eutrophication and an increase in the frequency of toxic algae blooms [1,2]. The concentrations of nitrogen in the water of China are pervading high [3]. The discharge of wastewater containing high concentration of ammonia nitrogen is one of the most important factors. Great efforts have been devoted to the removal of ammonia nitrogen from wastewater. Traditional methods include biological denitrication [ 4 ], chemical precipitation with magnesium ammonium phosphate [5], electrochemical conversion [6], air-stripping [7] and so on. Biological denitrication is the most common process in the treatment of ammonia nitrogen wastewater. But the process is only suitable for the removal of relatively low ammonia concentration due to the requirement of appropriate C/N ratio [8]. Chemical precipitation needs additional reagents, which may introduce new pollutants to water body. Electrochemical method often uses expensive metal or metal oxide as electrodes, and also consumes large quantity of energy [6].Although air-stripping makes use of stripping tower and consumes energy, it is very suitable for the removal of relatively high ammonia concentration. Different air-stripping conditions would appear different removal efficiency. And only air-stripping the effluent can not be attained the ""Integrated wastewater discharge standard (GB8978-88)"". In this study, we use air-stripping and oxidation to removal high concentration of ammonia nitrogen from simulated and real ammonia nitrogen wastewater."

A new Scramble has hit the African continent. This Scramble has many drivers: the 1978 Deng Xiao Ping liberalizations in China; the 1989 collapse of the Soviet empire; the ICT revolution; the ease of global communications. The underlying dynamic is the end of the bipolar world of the Cold War and its replacement with multipolarity. According to HSBC (2011), in 2050 China will be the world?s largest economy, with India number 3 and Brazil number 7. Russia will be 15th (below its old rival, Turkey). South Africa maybe ranked 30th, yet has been invited to join the exclusive (BRIC) club. One has to ask, why? It is sad to note how low South Africa is assessed to be?currently it is around number 24 in the world; the reason for the fall is that the HSBC model includes population growth, and it is in this domain that South Africa is a loser, being constrained by the impact of HIV/AIDS on its life expectancy. The original four BRIC nations include the factory of the world (China), the garden of the world (Brazil), the gas station of the world (Russia), and the back office of the world (India). South Africa comes to the club both as jeweller of the world and as gatekeeper. China, Brazil, and Russia all have considerable expertise in mining exploration, extraction, and processing.

The current economic downturn has been at the center of media attention for several years. Today, the mining and mineral sectors are being impacted by highly fluctuating supply-and-demand conditions, extreme price volatility and tremendous market uncertainty on a world-wide basis. There have been numerous plant closings, project cancellations and employee layoffs. In this gloomy economic environment, it is easy to forget that the world?s gross domestic product (GDP) has more than doubled in real terms during the last 30 years. While current market turbulence may continue for some time, the long-term trend is unmistakably upward. Living standards are rising all over the world, thereby creating demand for food, clothing, transportation and housing. This translates into tremendous demand for the mining and mineral sectors. In the future, new capacity and plant expansions will be necessary to meet this need. These investments, which typically have a life span of 30-plus years, will have to be based on long-term economic considerations rather than current market conditions.
