"New, high-resolution geophysical surveys were undertaken over parts of the Abitibi Subprovince, Canada, to help with geological mapping and to promote mineral exploration. Gravity surveys in the Rouyn-Noranda and Matagami areas (Québec) allowed better 3-D mapping of important geological structures, and a multiscale edge analysis of ground gravity data over the Blake River Group confirms that major faults behave at depth as predicted by surface geology. Airborne gravimetry west of Matagami (Québec) helped to identify a new trend south of Lake Grasset that is almost perpendicular to the assumed geological trend of the area. Electromagnetic (EM) surveys, flown in the Chibougamau (Québec) and Bartlett Dome (Ontario) areas, allowed new conductors to be identified at greater depths than were achievable with previously used EM systems. Airborne magnetic surveys were flown in the Burntbush area (Ontario), and other available high-resolution magnetic data were compiled to produce a continuous and homogenous magnetic grid of the Abitibi region.The resulting compilation map clearly shows the locations of dikes, faults, and shears zones, and reveals some fault extensions in areas of extensive overburden. This grid also allows the computation of enhanced maps, such as vertical derivative and tilt maps (e.g., a tilt map shows subtle magnetic features in the Blake River Group that are difficult to see in the total magnetic field or its first derivative). Results from these new surveys show there is considerable value in (1) resurveying areas covered by older surveys, and (2) recompiling data sets from these older surveys."

Diesel engine particulate matter pollution is a matter of concern currently in underground mines worldwide. A number of real-time Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) monitors have been developed in recent years; two of these by the National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) in the US. One, the D-PDM, is based on an adaption of the successful NIOSH?s Personal Dust Monitor (PDM) unit which is being taken up very successfully for mine respirable dust monitoring. The D-PDM measures all particulate matter within a sub-micron range as classified nominally at 0.8 micrometers by a purpose developed cyclone. The other, the FLIR Airtec, measures the Elemental Carbon (EC) component of DPM by a laser scattering approach. Both instruments have been evaluated underground in robustness and reliability testing in coal mines by the authors. Real time DPM monitors allow greater understanding of the sources and levels of DPM pollution in underground activities. They allow engineering evaluations to determine how conditions can be improved or mining personnel relocated to lower concentration levels. Studies are discussed that examine DPM concentrations from vehicles under varying ventilation conditions. Some of these concern tests undertaken during high activity longwall face moves. They focus on evaluating DPM during the various phases of the face Chock Shield moves. An initiative in some mines has been to limit the number of vehicles in the mining section or panel by the use of a Tag Board or Traffic Controller at the panel travel road entrance to manage exhaust DPM and gases. Diesel tags or tokens are used to control the number of vehicles entering a section or panel and so limit level of pollution. Summation of DPM levels from points monitored throughout a panel demonstrates increasing DPM levels from influence of additional equipment in series within the ventilation circuit. An alternative approach is to invest in underground continuous real-time monitoring of exhaust gases, DPM and section air quantity and integrate this information to determine whether an additional vehicle can enter without exceeding diesel target limit. This optimizes the access of diesel vehicles and replaces the existing manual tag board system. Real-time DPM monitoring allows the industry to pin-point high exposure zones such as those encountered where various vehicles work in areas of constrained or difficult ventilation. Identification of high DPM zones allows efficient modification of mine ventilation, operator positioning and other work practices to reduce underground miners? exposures.

Rio Tinto’s Colowyo Coal Mine produces 2.1 million tons per year in northwest Colorado. Colowyo uses the terrace mining method to recover up to seven coal seams ranging in thickness from 5 to 20 feet. Coal recovery in the 6 foot thick high grade C-seam has recently been challenged due to large variations in the pitch and roll of the seam. As well, some coal damage was seen due to an increased thickness of the overburden consisting of a hard sandstone channel.

New approaches that increase hydrometallurgical recovery from refractory minerals in below-mill-cut-off-grade sulfide copper ore can add significant value, improve profitability and increase ore reserves. This paper describes the development and implementation of an engineered heap (EH) approach to leaching low-grade, chalcopyrite-bearing ore at Freeport-McMoRan?s mine in Morenci, Arizona. The technical evolution of the engineered heap concept is described together with the challenges and benefits following implementation.

"The mechanical behavior of Co-20Cr-15W-10Ni alloy is studied by compression tests at high temperature. Microstructures after deformation are evaluated using SEM-EBSD. Significant grain refinement occurs by dynamic recrystallization for high temperature and low strain rate (T>1100°C, <0.1s-1), and at high strain rate (~10s-1). Dynamic recrystallization is discontinuous and occurs by grain boundaries nucleation, leading to a necklace structure. The nucleation mechanism is most likely to be bulging of grain boundaries. However, recrystallization occurs also by rotation of annealing twins which can bulge as well. The modeling of mechanical behavior gives a fair quantification of flow softening due to dynamic recrystallization, indicating the progress of dynamic recrystallization with deformation.IntroductionCobalt-chromium alloys are used in biomedical applications for the elaboration of implants due to their outstanding mechanical properties and their high resistance to corrosion. For stent application a large ductile behavior is required in addition to the high mechanical strength. Indeed stents have to undergo a deformation until e˜40% during their expansion [1]. Conventional Co-Cr-Mo (CCM) alloys exhibit limited ductility (maximal deformation about e˜30%) [2]. Co-Cr-W-Ni (L-605) alloy is a better candidate for stent elaboration since its fracture strain can exceed 40% (comparable to nickel superalloys (Figure 1), while it keeps high mechanical strength. In spite of the presence of nickel element in this alloy, biocompatibility is sufficient for vascular implants, therefore L-605 alloy is extensively used for heart valves and stent elaboration [3]."

"Since the quality of Vacuum Arc Remelted ingots is linked to their chemical homogeneity and metallurgical structure, a modeling study of the solidification during VAR has been undertaken. It is based on the solution of the coupled transient heat, momentum and solute transport equations during the remelting of a cylindrical ingot. Solidification mechanisms implemented in the model include a full coupling between energy and solute transport in the mushy zone, and accounting for nucleation and finite diffusion of solutes at the microscopic scale, in both solid and liquid phases. This modeling can be applied to actual multi-component alloys. In this paper, the macrosegregation in Zircaloy 4 ingots is investigated. To validate the model, one single melt of a homogeneous electrode has been specifically performed. The comparison between the predicted macrosegregation and the experimental results shows the importance of accounting for solutal convection to forecast properly the macrosegregation in remelted ingots.IntroductionVacuum Arc Remelting of zirconium alloy ingots is a key step in the manufacturing process of fuel assembly components in nuclear reactors. The control of the chemical homogeneity is indeed fundamental to ensure the quality and the in-reactor performance of the final products. Despite the use of electromagnetic stirring to homogenize the liquid melt composition, chemical heterogeneities develop in the mushy zone during the solidification stage. One of the main challenges for zirconium producers, as well as titanium producers, is to master the VAR process in order to control the macrosegregation in remelted ingots. Macrosegregation results from the association of microsegregation and transport phenomena. The latter are primarily due to the flow in the liquid and mushy parts. It is now well established [1-4] that the hydrodynamics of the melt pool in a VAR ingot depends on the combined action of the followings: thermal and solutal buoyancy, self-induced electromagnetic force and the periodic centrifugal force caused by the angular movement generated by the stirring. However, for zirconium alloy ingots, the effects of thermal and solutal buoyancy forces on macrosegregation through their influence on the flow in the mushy zone have not been clearly identified."

When mining accidents occur, workers often become trapped and/or incapacitated. Current rescue operations can be dangerous and too slow to produce favorable outcomes. Currently, no method exists for rescue crews to scout ahead at critical times to assess the situation. Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), through a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) sponsored program has developed the Gemini-Scout mine rescue platform. The Gemini-Scout was created to assist in underground mine rescue missions. It has been designed to go into potentially hazardous environments to assess the conditions (structural, air quality, temperature). In addition, it will enable two-way communications with potential survivors prior to human rescue teams being able to enter the area. The Gemini platform is a dual tracked-chassis design, which gives the robot excellent mobility in unstructured environments. The design includes a passive 2-degree of freedom joint between two identical bodies allowing for ±30deg of pitch and roll. In addition to the base mobility platform, the Gemini-Scout incorporates many other features to help it succeed in its underground mission. The electronics are mounted in explosion proof housings to ensure safe operations in hazardous gas environments. The platform is also able to operate in up to 18in of standing water with its elevated pan/tilt cameras for navigation. A four-channel video link and Two-way audio on the vehicle help to ensure located survivors can communicate with the robot operators. The platform also incorporates a Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approved multi-gas sensor to monitor air quality. SNL believes that this technology is broad enough to be appealing to other first responders, such as police, firefighters and medical personnel. Gemini could easily be fitted to handle earthquake and fire scenarios, and it could provide relief in currently inaccessible situations.

Originally developed as a step change in ultrafine grinding efficiency, the IsaMill? has made inroads into conventional ball mill and tower mill mainstream grinding duties during the last 5 years - beginning with the Anglo Platinum mainstream grinding projects in South Africa. At the 2006 SAG Conference, plant testwork on the incorporation of IsaMill? technology into the McArthur River (Northern Territory, Australia) Pb/Zn primary grinding circuit was reported. The IsaMill? has now become an integral component of that circuit, treating up to 1mm top size feed and directly producing P80 45 µm rougher flotation feed. Two 1.1 MW IsaMills? are now used in this duty contributing to a 27% increase in overall plant throughput and a reduction in rougher feed size distribution. In this paper, we report on the current state of development and performance of the IsaMill? in the primary grinding duty at McArthur River and also consider future directions.

Mining operations, whether new or existing, are constantly looking for ways to maximize production and improve energy efficiency, while keeping the footprint required to a minimum. The Nordberg MP1250 cone crusher was designed with these three goals in mind. A series of side-by-side evaluations comparing an MP1250 to an MP1000 were completed at two Freeport-McMoRan operations. The first evaluation began October 2009 in a tertiary position and the second began March 2010 in a secondary position, where it remains in full production today. Utilizing 25% higher power capacity than the existing MP1000 tertiary crushers, the MP1250 had 29% higher capacity and 17% lower specific energy, adjusted for differences in feed and product size. The MP1250 compared to the existing MP1000 secondary crushers achieved 30% higher capacity at a slightly reduced specific energy, while achieving a finer product. The MP1250?s higher capacity and energy efficiency may have application in many crushing plants. Depending on site specific economic factors, greenfield projects may benefit from a smaller footprint and less ancillary equipment, whereas brownfield projects may benefit from higher capacity or a finer product within the same footprint.

"Recycling of ADC12 alloy scraps for fabrication of open-cell aluminium foams has been conducted via pressure infiltration method of replication process. The scrap, up to 50 wt.%, was melted with pure aluminium billet, followed by infiltration in a replicated mold of polyethylene foam structure. Compared with the pure aluminium foam, the compressive strength and hardness are higher for the foams with recycled scraps. The increase in foam mechanical properties is due to the presence of Si hard phase in Al matrix. The strength and hardness of the foams also increase with increasing contents of the scraps.IntroductionRecently, open-cell metallic foams have been brought to considerable attention of many industries due to their superior properties; such as large surface area, high specific strength, thermal conductivity, high service temperature and excellent anti-microbial activity, that cannot be found in conventional materials [1, 2]. Typically, open-cell foams are used in functional applications for which a requirement of high strength materials is not demanded. Good examples of such applications include heat exchangers, bone-replacement implants, interconnects, catalyst supports, and sound insulators.Among all types of open-cell metallic foams, aluminium (Al) is the most widely used base metal, due to low material cost, low density, low melting temperature and good corrosion resistance. To improve mechanical properties of Al foam, modification of foam microstructure with addition of alloy elements or ceramic particles is commonly carried out [3, 4]. ADC12 alloy is a typical die-casting Al alloy with high content of silicon (Si) close to the eutectic point in Al-Si binary phase diagram. The alloy is extensively used in the casting industry, due to high wear and corrosion resistance, low coefficient of thermal expansion and excellent castability [5]. The mechanical properties of Al-Si alloy are strongly dependent of Si content."

Various types of blasting instrumentation can be used in the field to analyze conditions before, during and after a blast, and to indicate what changes need to be made. When different types of measurements are combined together, the blaster can end up with useful data that can pinpoint the source or sources of problems and what changes have to be made. This paper outlines two case examples where blasting instrumentation was used to overcome problems in separate quarry operations. Extensive measurements with different systems led to significantly improved blasting results.

"Nanocrystalline CdS thin films were prepared by vacuum evaporation on glass substrates at ambient temperature. The films were characterized by recording and analyzing their transmittance, X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, scanning electron microscope (SEM) images and Energy dispersive X-ray (EDAX) spectra. X-ray diffractograms revealed that the material is nanocrystalline with predominant cubic crystal structure and preferential orientation along (1 1 1) plane. SEM micrographs confirmed the nanostructure of the material and showed uniform and well covered surfaces. EDAX reports revealed that the films are cadmium rich and contain oxygen. The first derivative of the absorbance was used to estimate the effective bandgap energies of the nanocrystallites and the hyperbolic band model was used to estimate their radii. The results were compared with those obtained by XRD and SEM measurements.IntroductionCdS thin films are of considerable interest as they can be used in fabrication of solar cells and other opto-electronic devices. In particular, heterojunction solar cells with a narrow band gap base and wide band gap window have been investigated in an attempt to develop efficient, stable and low-cost solar cells [1]. The CdS quantum dot embedded in a glass matrix is one of the well-known quantum dot systems and its electronic and luminescent properties have been studied extensively [2].Three-dimensional confinement of carriers within the quantum dots leads to the blue shift of the optical band-gap and to modification of many properties of semiconductor material [3]. It has been argued that in these semiconductor nanoparticles the hyperbolic band model gives a better fit to the observed quantum size effect as compared to the effective mass approximation [4]."

"Manganese cobalt spinel oxide coatings have been shown to be effective for preventing chromium volatilization from interconnect alloys, and the associated cathode poisoning, in solid oxide fuel cells. During high temperature exposure a reaction layer consisting of chromium containing spine! forms due to reaction with the chromia scale formed on the alloy. The electrical conductivity of this reaction layer is much lower than that of the coating material and thus can increase the overall area specific resistance (ASR) of the system. The approaches to reducing the ASR are to reduce the thickness and/or increase the electrical conductivity of the reaction layer, which includes both the high-chromium spinel phase and the chromia scale. In this paper the effects of transition metal dopants on the amount and properties of reaction products formed during the reaction of spine! oxide coating materials with chromia are presented.IntroductionThe high cost and difficulties involved with the processing of chromia based ceramic interconnect materials for SOFCs are driving the search for metallic interconnects [1, 2]. The reduction in the operating temperature of SOFC has allowed for the use of high chromium alloy steels for this application [3]. However, the volatilization of chromium from the chromia scale, and the associated poisoning of the cathode, remains a problem which needs to be addressed [ 4]. Though the application of manganese cobalt oxide spine! coatings on the alloy surface substantially reduces chromium poisoning of the cathode [5], the low electrical conductivity of the reaction layer formed between the chromia scale and coating affects the performance of interconnect. Incorporating transition metal ions in the reaction layer could alter the electrical characteristics and improve the performance. Copper and nickel doped manganese oxide spinels are widely used as thermistors due to their high electrical conductivity and negative temperature co-efficient of resistance characteristics [ 6, 7]. Hence doping of copper and nickel in manganese-cobalt spine! oxide composition may improve the electrical characteristics of interaction layer as well and is attempted here."

"The effect of La2O3 content up to 15 wt% on phase stability, sintering and microstructure of cubic zirconia (8YSZ) was investigated. XRD results showed that the specimens containing up to 15 wt% La2O3 were composed of only cubic structure. Also, the specimens doped up to 5 wt% La2O3 revealed no La2O3 peaks, indicating that La2O3 was completely solubilized in the cubic structure. However, when> 5 wt% La2O3 was added, the peak of La2Zr2O7 compound emerged, showing that the overdoped La2O3 was not solubilized in the 8YSZ matrix. The lattice parameter of the 8YSZ slightly decreased with the increasing La2O3 content up to 1 wt% but further increase in the La203 amount resulted in an increased lattice parameter. The comparison of grain size of the 8YSZ specimens with various La2O3 content showed that grain size slightly increased with the increasing La2O3 content up to 1 wt% but further increase in the La2O3 amount resulted in a decreased grain size.IntroductionAt atmospheric pressures, three polymorphic forms of Zr02 are stable at different temperatures i.e. monoclinic, tetragonal and cubic. A high-pressure orthorhombic form of Zr02 has also been reported[l]. The successful production of pure Zr02 bodies is not possible all the time due to the large volume expansion associated with the martensitic tetragonal-monoclinic transformation. This fact restricts the applications of zirconia, in spite of its excellent mechanical and thermal properties. However, the stabilization of the high temperature polymorphs at room temperature as stable phases is made possible by addition of suitable dopants. Fully stabilized cubic Zr02 and partially stabilized tetragonal Zr02 show interesting properties and are widely used as ionic conductors, coatings and gas sensors in solid oxide fuel cells and structural applications[2]. Most frequently used dopants include Y203, CaO, MgO and Ce02, although other oxides, such as those of rare earth elements, can also act as stabilizers of the high temperature structures. The incorporation of aliovalent cations to the lattice, forming substitutional solid solutions, allows to control the concentration of anionic vacancies in the structure. This aspect is particularly important in designing ionic conductors[3], and is also determinant in the stabilization process[ 4]. The process of stabilization with larger ionic radii dopants is rationalized by the crystal chemistry model[ 5], that describes the dopant cations as typical stabilizer when they have larger ionic size, lower charged state and higher ionicity than Zr4+ The ionic radius of Zr4+ is 0.84 Å and that for La3+ is 1.016 Å [6]."

Shore Gold Inc. (Shore) is presently designing a diamond processing plant for the Star and the Orion South kimberlite deposits in the Fort à la Corne (FalC) area in central Saskatchewan. The first step in the plant is diamond liberation and occurs in the comminution section. Diamond liberation is the process of breaking up the kimberlite rock, as gently as possible so as not to damage the diamonds. Autogenous grinding mills (AG mills) use a combination of impact crushing, abrasion and attrition to break up the kimberlite. The forces that occur during the actions of abrasion and attrition cause the kimberlites to break up preferentially along lines of weaknesses which offers a ?diamond friendly? method of comminution. Hard competent kimberlite is commonly found in the diatreme zone as well as the root zone of the volcanic pipe and is the source of kimberlite for most of the Southern African diamond mines. Softer kimberlite is typically found in and around the crater area of a volcanic pipe and it is this kimberlite that makes up the majority of kimberlite for both the Star and Orion South deposits. These softer kimberlites can be readily broken up using abrasion and attrition imparted by AG mills. In order for Shore to benefit from the softer kimberlite found in the Star - Orion South diamond project, two large (10.97 m diameter x 7.10 m long) AG mills were designed for the comminution section based on extensive test work and simulations by Metso Minerals (Metso).

Positron-Emission-Particle-Tracking (PEPT) has enabled the non-invasive observation of charge and slurry transport in model mills under operational conditions. We use high quality PEPT data to infer that the charge motion can be effectively described by a non-Newtonian granular fluid. An improved theory for slurry transport, including inertial effects, is presented.

In underground activities ground control is a challenging problem. It affects safety, production, and efficiency. As per statistics of accident data, ?fall of roof/sides? is one of the major causes of mine accidents. In many cases, our experiences and understanding of soil and rock behavior still fall short of being able to predict how the ground will behave. Presently, empirical approaches to design are widely used in estimating mine support parameters. Under these circumstances, expert judgment plays an important role, and such accidents can be obviated with accurate measurement and optimization of data and analysis using the neuro-fuzzy technique of artificial intelligence. Recently, a neuro-fuzzy hybrid approach has become one of the major areas of interest in engineering fields because it gets the benefits of neural networks as well as those of fuzzy logic systems, and it removes the individual disadvantages by combining them on the common features. Neural network and fuzzy logic technologies have common features, such as a distributed representation of knowledge, the ability to handle data with uncertainty and imprecision, etc., like in ground control. Fuzzy logic technique has tolerance for imprecision of data, while neural networks have tolerance for noisy data. In this paper we have focused an intelligent technique, i.e., neuro-fuzzy technique, to approximate the setting load given to the standing support (props) erected for the purpose of supporting freshly exposed roof during underground mining. We have used twelve input variables of rock parameters, and after having trained using a neural network with a sigmoidal function as an activation function, simulation was done to find the output parameter, i.e., the pre-load (setting load)to be applied on props. Outputs of the neural network were again fed to the fuzzy system together with the twelve parameters, incorporating five triangular membership functions for each parameter. Final optimum output was approximated using the MATLAB program, which was found to be satisfactory. Neuro-fuzzy technique has better performance over individual neural networks or fuzzy logic technique.

In this paper, a model of a fuel cell system has been proposed to account for the membrane physics at the micro level which is coupled with the macroscopic flow and mass transport phenomena occurring in a single channel of a Polymer Electrode Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) system. We have developed a novel approach to model the catalyst layer electrochemical processes in a Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA) and coupled it with mass transport and fluid flow calculations at the channel level using STAR-CD commercial software. The predicted values of the cell voltage from this micro-macro model are validated with experimental data available in the literature. A sensitivity analysis has been carried out to study the effect of the design and operating parameters such as catalyst loading and initial temperature on the overall performance of the PEMFC. The results indicate that the cell voltage increases at higher platinum catalyst loading and is also independent of the choice of initial cell temperature.

Reducing SAG Mill feed size has been a major trend in recent years. ?Mine to mill? strategies have reduced blasted-rock size, and in a growing number of operations reducing the primary crusher CSS and/or adding additional crushing upstream of the SAG mill have reduced rock feed size. While reducing feed size will increase SAG mill throughput, issues arise in terms of retaining charge in the mill, exposing the shell lining to impact damage, and maintaining milling performance should the pre-crush system shut down. This paper reviews the past experience on pre-crushing for SAG mills and provides an analysis of liner design (in particular grates and shell liners) for pre-crushed feed.
