"Materials selection for Gen IV supercritical water reactor in-core components faces major challenges due to severe operating condition. Beside high-temperature mechanical properties, SCC and general corrosion resistance of commercially available materials are also major focuses in recent research. Recent reports suggest that certain types of surface modifications are beneficial to SCW corrosion resistance. In this study, the effects of surface modifications are investigated, and possible mechanisms for improved corrosion performance are discussed.IntroductionThe current Canadian pressure-tube supercritical water reactor (SCW) design specifies a core outlet temperature of 625°C under 25 MPa of pressure, with peak cladding temperature as high as 850°C. Challenges in materials selection include high-temperature mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, SCC resistance and radiation damage. Most of the SCW corrosion test results available are below 730°C. Early work by Allen [1] summarized the corrosion resistance of alloy groups including Ni-based super alloys, stainless and ferritic/matensitic (F/M) steels that can potentially be used for SCW reactors. F/M steels can only be used at low temperature sites (e.g. down stream piping). At 500°C and 25 MPa, F/M steels develop a thick but mechanically stable oxide layer. However, the long term stability of the surface oxide layer is largely unknown. Ni-based alloys appear to form very thin surface oxide, however pitting was observed in the vicinity of some intermetallic precipitates [2-5], and dissolution of major alloying components could pose significant problems for down stream piping [6]. In addition, concerns of Helium formation due to Ni transmutation prevented this alloy group to be used as fuel cladding. The corrosion resistant austenitic stainless steels (e.g. 316L) are found to be susceptible to localized corrosion such as pitting, intergranular attack and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) [7]."

The author has developed a seven-step process called the Applied Rock Mechanics (ARM) Protocol that the author has used to solve numerous roof stability problems in mines throughout North America since 1975. It is a practical evaluation process using trained observation, innovative data collection instrumentation, video borehole cameras, analytical processes, and controlled testing methods that have become highly effective in solving ground control problems in every type of underground mine. This paper will describe each of the steps of the protocol and how the rock mechanics engineer applies them to resolve a typical ground control problem.

"The recovery of manganese from the Boleo project of Baja Mining is via an acid oxidation and acid reduction process in seawater. Manganese as manganese dioxide is leached into solution as manganese sulphate with the addition of sulphur dioxide gas as a reductant and then precipitated as a manganese carbonate. The use of the manganese carbonate intermediate to produce electrolytic manganese metal (EMM) has been extensively studied. The manganese carbonate can be used in place of natural (MnC03) or reduced ores (MnO) of manganese as a feed to the EMM plant. Manganese carbonate can be dissolved in spent electrolyte from manganese plating, followed by purification using ammonium sulphide precipitation of minor elements and then electrowinning in a selenium free process. The results of small cell testing of manganese electrowinning are reported.IntroductionThe Boleo Project of Baja Mining is a greenfields development currently under construction approximately 5 km north of the town of Santa Rosalia, Baja California Sur, Mexico. The Boleo property is held by the Mexican company, Minera y Metalurgica del Boleo S.A. de C. V. (MMB). MMB is owned 70% by Baja Mining Corp. and 30% by a consortium of Korean companies consisting of KORES - Korea Resources Corporation, LS Nikko Copper, Hyundai Hysco, SK Networks and lljin Copper.The Boleo deposit has Measured and Indicated resources of264.7 million tonnes grading 1.50% copper equivalent (CuEq) & Inferred resources of 159.9 million tonnes grading 1.15% CuEq. The calculation of copper equivalent is based on a combination of metal prices and predicted metallurgical recoveries (Table I). The metallurgical recoveries have been confined by extensive bench and pilot plant testing. Proven and probable reserves are available at Boleo to provide for more than a 30 year mine life. Initially, 25 years of mine life and 23 years of process plant operation have been scheduled in the February 2010 Technical Report Update (www.sedar.com)"

"Furnace resistance is a function of the complex interrelationship between many factors including: operating practice, slag conductivity, temperature, power intensity, and geometry (electrode shape, diameter, spacing, immersion, slag depth, etc.).Accurate prediction of resistance is critical for success of the overall furnace design. The sizing of electrodes, columns, bus-bars, and transformers are all impacted. Estimation of minimum and maximum resistance or maximum operational current, as well as the maximum operating voltage are of fundamental importance.Various mathematical tools have been developed to assist designers with the selection of furnace dimensions and the prediction of resistance. Elkem found the methods of Downing and Urban 1965 and Westly 1975, to be particularly useful.In the current paper, comparisons are drawn between data from spent aluminum pot lining (SPL) demonstration testing at Elkem Bjolvefossen and predictions based on these classical tools and 3D finite element modeling (FEM) with COMSOL.®"

This report is the first in a "final" series of publications on the Juneau Mining District (JMD). This volume summarizes the results of Bureau of Mines (Bureau) investigations in the JMD during the period 1984-1988. Volume 2 consists of a detailed description of Bureau investigations of mineral de-posits, prospects, and occurrences. Volume 3 is a report on industrial minerals within the district. This study has identified and examined more than 300 mines, prospects, and occurrences containing gold, silver, copper, zinc, lead, nickel, cobalt, tungsten, molybdenum, chromium, and PGM. More than 20 of these were discovered during this study. An additional 20 prospects not mentioned in the literature were rediscovered during the JMD study.

"Cathode impurity levels of electrorefined copper were evaluated based on 1/10* scale laboratory electrorefining tests. Cathodes were evaluated near the top, mid-section, and bottom sections of cathodes on both the set and mold sides and strip and scrap cycles. Slime weights were measured, and slime and electrolyte samples were also evaluated for impurities. Results from these tests have been compiled and compared to evaluate the effects of changes in operating conditions and electrode location on cathode impurities.IntroductionMany types of impurities are commonly found in commercial copper electrorefining anodes. The smelter operations that produce the anodes process concentrates that contain a wide variety of impurities that vary based on the mineralogy of the ore. Most anode impurities are removed during electrorefining. However, a portion of the anode impurities is incorporated into the copper cathode product. The mechanisms by which impurities are transported from the anode to the cathode are not well understood. Some impurities can be transported as anode slime particles to the cathode where they are incorporated into the cathode. Other impurities can be transported as dissolved species that are electrochemically reduced with the copper to become part of the cathode. Although research has been performed on anode slimes and impurities [1-4], there is a need for additional information regarding the relationships associated with electrorefining cycles, electrode faces, local electrode positions, anode impurities and specific cathode impurities. The objective of this study was to evaluate lead, arsenic, and antimony cathode impurity trends associated with electrorefining cycles, electrode faces, local electrode positions, and anode impurities. A variety of techniques including electrolyte filtering, anode heat treatment, high electrolyte arsenic concentration, high arsenic and/or lead in anodes, flocculation of slime particles, and appropriate current density control were used to vary cathode impurity levels. Each test was performed only once for a strip cycle and once for a scrap cycle. Consequently, the results for the individual conditions are preliminary and are not the focus of this study. However, the collective set of data with varying impurity modifying techniques provides a broad range of impurity levels, and the associated trends with respect to lead, arsenic, and antimony are discussed in this paper. Approximately 180 analyses of copper cathode were used to track the antimony, arsenic, and lead impurities. Eighteen anode slime samples were also analyzed for antimony, arsenic, and lead."

The selection of the main mineralised zone (MMZ) concentrator milling circuit has followed a comprehensive route over the preceding 10 years. Many knowledgeable parties have contributed and assisted in developing the milling circuit according to the best available information. The final selection of the flow sheet was completed after DRA conducted a techno-economic study on four possible comminution circuits ranging from conventional crushing and ball milling to fully autogenous (AG) milling. The results from all the above mentioned work indicated that it is possible to treat the MMZ ore at the desired throughputs to the desired grind sizes in a fully autogenous grinding circuit. The flow sheet was designed to treat the main mineralised zone (MMZ) arising’s from both underground and open cast operations and incorporates a fully autogenous grinding (AG) circuit. Commissioning of the 375ktpm concentrator at Nkomati Nickel began in August 2009 with the first ore reporting to the mill on the 15th of September 2009.

"On average, one out of two glass bottles coming on to the market is provided by recycling processes in Europe. Glass recycling has been started by the early of 1970s in Turkey, and the recycling amount has been reached to 70 thousand tons recently, while 4.2 million tons which represents only 25 percent of total glass manufactured, is the amount of glass collected annually for recycling in the world. The glass recycle process basically involves collecting, sorting, then crushing and grinding after which glass cullet is produced as the secondary raw material. Removing of the contaminants from the glass cullet, and then melting are the next steps. In this study, recent developments of 100% recyclable without any deterioration in quality, and never decomposable glass, are discussed detailed in terms of glass production processes.1.IntroductionIn many countries, waste glass constitutes a large proportion of solid wastes, and recycling the glass is a major environmental problem all over the world [1]. Among the diverse types of waste, glass is one of the most valuable recycling materials because it can be revived and recycled completely and hardly decomposes [2]. Between 80% and 85% of the mass output from the worldwide glass industry is either in the form of containers for the food, beverage, and pharmaceutical industries, or flat glass for building construction or for motor vehicle manufacture. Other product segments, whilst only constituting about 15% of the mass output, produce high value technical and consumer products by comparison with container and flat glass [3].In the present study, the recycling of Liquid Crystal Display (LCD), Cathode Ray Tubes (CRT) and Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) were examined. The production of glasses and glass-ceramics from glass cullet, synthesis of different compounds from recycled glass were other subjects of interest. The use of recycled glass for construction industry and using glass as aggregate were emphasized. Finally the recovery of glass fibers were investigated."

"The Metropolitan Miami development, a downtown mixed-use complex developed by Miami-based MDM Development Group, has weathered the economic downturn by adapting to the needs and pressures of the local market. The development (a.k.a. Met Miami) epitomizes the term “mixed-use urban development” with its combination of condominium ownership, rental apartments, hospitality, office and retail components within Miami’s urban core. Initially conceived and conceptualized in 2004, the development has gone through several concept changes. Today, the global USD $900 million development approaches completion.The foundation evaluation, design and construction for this development included the use of innovative and state-of-the-art augered-cast-in-place (ACIP) piles. The testing for these elements included (1) the first-ever, multi-level O-cell load test of an ACIP pile, (2) a world record 5,200 ton (46,261.5 kN) equivalent top load test of an ACIP pile, and (3) continued the advancement of the ACIP pile industry to include the deepest and largest diameter pile installation to date. Those dimensions were up to 36 in (914 mm) in diameter, and 120 ft (36.6 m) deep. The project showed ACIP piles were a proven alternative for structures exceeding 70 stories in South Florida.The development includes four parcels. Met 1 and Met 2 are completed, and the construction of the Met 3 development is just beginning, with completion expected in 2014. Once the Met 3 development is completed, the design and construction phases of the project will have spanned a decade. The Met Square portion of the development, which will be a retail and cinema component, is proposed for the parcel between Met 1 and Met 2."

"The beneficiation of poor manganese ores containing phosphate gangue is very difficult by conventional processes, because of the similarities in the physico-chemical properties of the constituent minerals. The shaking table gravity concentration process and concentrated strong acid selective intensified leaching process were used for dephosphorisation of Yunnan manganese ore. The leaching process was effective. The effects of intensified leaching time, solid-liquid ratio and particle size were investigated. The relevant leaching factors were optimized as -0.125+0.088 mm particle size with 68% nitric acid for 24 h when using a solid-liquid ratio of 1:1 at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. Under these conditions, the P/Mn ratio was reduced from 0.0107 to 0.0056, and the grade of manganese was increased from 12.32% to 42.76%. The dissolution of manganese during leaching was negligible.IntroductionManganese and its compounds are widely used in the iron and steel industry as deoxidation and desulfurization agents and as alloying additives [1-2]. Because of the increase in demand, low grade refractory manganese ores are becoming a new source. Many Chinese manganese ores are high in phosphorus, which cannot be used directly for metallurgical purposes. This occurs because phosphorus enters into the metal phase during smelting and its presence sharply deteriorates the mechanical properties of the metal [3-4].Kanungo and Sant [3] investigated the dephosphorization of phosphorus-rich manganese ores by selective leaching with dilute hydrochloric acid. They observed that leaching with dilute hydrochloric acid (0.1-0.6M) could reduce the phosphorus contents to the specified limit of 0.12%. Ye [5] investigated dephosphorization of high-phosphorus manganese ore of the Huayuan type. Using high intensity magnetic separation, roasting and leaching with acid for dephosphorization, as used in the industry, a 40.15% manganese concentrate with a P/Mn ratio of 0.0037 was obtained. Yimin [6] investigated magnetic separation followed by inverse flotation of high-phosphorus manganese ore, and found that the P/Mn ratio could be reduced from 0.046 to 0.002."

"AngloGold Ashanti Brasil, with assistance from Sherritt International Corporation, has recently commissioned a new autoclave for the pressure oxidation of refractory gold feeds at their Corrego do Sítio operation in Brazil. Design of the new plant, including feed acidulation, pressure oxidation, oxidized solids washing and solution neutralization circuits, was based on the results of test work conducted by Sherritt at their pilot plant in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. This paper describes the results of the pilot plant study as well as highlights of the design exercise.INTRODUCTIONAngloGold Ashanti Brasil (AGA Brasil) has recently commissioned a refractory gold pressure oxidation plant at the site of the original São Bento operation in Brazil. The design of the São Bento pressure oxidation facility was based on Sherritt technology; Sherritt carried out the original process development test work in the mid-1980s, provided a process design package and detailed specifications for critical pressure oxidation equipment and participated in the training of operators and commissioning of the plant. The São Bento plant was operated between 1986 and 2007, when the original ore body was exhausted (Silva et al., 2004). AGA Brasil purchased the facility from Eldorado Gold in 2008, with the intent of refurbishing the plant to process refractory gold concentrates produced from the nearby Córrego do Sítio mining area.Sherritt International Corporation has a long history in the development and application of commercial pressure oxidation and pressure leaching processes. Sherritt’s development of technology for the pressure oxidation of refractory gold ores and concentrates commenced in the 1980s in collaboration with Homestake for application at the McLaughlin project in California. This was followed by several commercial applications in Canada, Papua New Guinea and Brazil (Berezowsky et al., 1991). More than thirty pilot plant campaigns investigating the pressure oxidation of refractory gold ores or concentrates have been conducted by Sherritt since the 1980s, and projects with Sherritt contributions to the process development studies and/or engineering design account for about half of the commercial plants that have operated to date with this type of process (Collins et al., 2011a; 2011b)."

In 2007 Copper Mountain Mining determined that there were sufficient resources to consider reopening the Similco Mine near Princeton, BC. The mill facility that had been built by Newmont Mining in 1972 was closed in 1996 and all of the process equipment removed. The mill had been built on the west side of the Similkameen River to facilitate mining of the Ingerbelle Deposit. In 1980 construction was completed on a primary crusher and cable belt to deliver ore across the Similkameen River from the Copper Mountain deposit to the Ingerbelle mill. With the decision to restart mining of the Copper Mountain deposit, the decision was made to design and build a 35,000 tpd grinding and flotation mill near the mining operations. This paper discusses the application of historical operating data for the selection of the mills for the new grinding circuit and provides an overview of the grinding circuit design.

"China is the world's largest steel producer, in order to give environment load comprehensive analysis of steel and iron industry in china using LCA method, the life cycle inventory was compiled and assessment model based on Gabi software was also established. Environmental impact of two different routes ofBF-BOF and the EAF were analyzed respectively and intercompared. The results show that the modem EAF route is superior to the traditional BFBOF route on almost all the environmental impact indexes, which including acidification potential, eutrification potential, global warming potential, ozone depletion potential, etc. In the whole life cycle ofBF-BOF route in China, the transporting process ranks the biggest contribution part to the overall global warming potential, which can be explained by the fossil fuel burning of transporting vehicles during the long distance from Australia to China as the iron ore used are mainly imported from Australia. Apart from transporting process, Coking, blast furnace and iron mining processes could induce great environmental problems, while for the EAF route, the electricity consumption is considerable, which causing large amount ofC02 emission indirectly. Based on the analysis, several further countermeasures were proposed. At the year of2009, China crude steel output of 568 million tons, accounting for 46.6% of the global crude steel production, more than the total sum of crude steel production produced by 20 countries ranked behind. In 2011, China's crude steel production which is expected to be or close to 700 million tons, an increase of 12% than last year, will account for half of the global steel production.The steel industry, however, is intensive resources industry with huge consumptions of energy and water together with mineral resources. Energy consumption of the iron and steel industry has been about 10% of the total energy consumption since 1980. Coal dominants, power next and other energies share least in the energy consumption structure, for example coal accounts for 72.19%, power 23.52% and other total sums less than 5% in the steel energy consumption at year of 2002[2,3]. The consumption of coal discharges much emission of CO2, yet emissions of C02 in China steel industry, secondary only to the power and cement industry, ranked the third, and the coal dominant energy structure and its process have a close relationship. The aim of this research is to target steel production of typical blast furnace-converter (BFBOF) and electric furnace, using GABI software to evaluate and analyze resources and environment influence of LCA, directing at the existing problems in the development of China steel as well as finding the possible way to improve ability of reducing pollution and energy consumption in order to realize the sustainable development of the steel industry [ 4-7]."

The Toulon tunnel project is a key component of the Highway corridor on the French Riviera between Marseille and Nice and is a fundamental transportation infrastructure for the region. The first design studies started in the 1960?s. The tunnel project is made of 2 separate tunnels: South and North tunnel. The North tunnel was built between 1992 and 2002 after 10 years of difficult construction (for example, on March 15th, 1996, a collapse of the tunnel in the ?Marchand Area? generated a sink hole in the city Center, causing 20 months delay). The South tunnel alignment runs parallel to the North tunnel at the same depth below Toulon historical downtown (20 to 40m depth with some areas with less than 10m of cover). The Risk management program was studied to be a State of the Art program in urban tunneling construction. The Hydro Geological Context The whole project area is covered with backfills and colluviums of 1 to 4m thick. The Schist, marls and sandstones, randomly distributed along the alignment below the first layer have different characteristics. While the Schist are pretty compact, the marls are fractured. The other layers have very different characteristics, and many faults are located along the alignment, especially in the limestones. The Breccia are heavily decompressed and deformable, as well as the other soils located in the Marchand Area. This 80m long area is where the settlements need to be controlled with an extensive monitoring program. The complete Geological profile is presented in Figure 1. [ ]

"The FFC Cambridge process was suggested as a promising Si production technique for the expanding solar energy industry. Direct electrochemical reduction of bulk SiO2 plates and porous SiO2 pellets in molten CaCl2-NaCl salt mixture were investigated at 750°C by applying 2.8 V potential difference. The produced Si powder was brown and found to be contaminated by the Ni and stainless steel plates used as the cathode contacting materials. The reduction rates of the bulk SiO2 plates and porous SiO2 pellets were compared from variations of current and accumulative electrical charge that passed through the cell during the electrochemical reduction. The amorphous bulk SiO2 plates were reduced slightly faster than porous pellets of crystalline SiO2. The overall reduction potential of SiO2 pellets against the graphite anode at 750°C in molten CaCl2-NaCl salt mixture was determined as 2.3 V by cyclic voltammetry. This potential was supported by calculations.IntroductionMetallurgical grade Si cannot be directly used in electronic industry and some intermediate steps are required to produce industrial solar grade silicon (SOG-Si). A promising alternative solar grade silicon production technique is the FFC Cambridge Process [1]. Production of Si by electrochemical reduction of SiO2 at 850oC in molten CaCl2 electrolyte was first studied by Nohira et.al. [2]. In their study; Si formation was observed on bulk SiO2 cathodes after 1 hour of electrolysis. Complete electrochemical reduction of porous SiO2 pellets was first reported by Jin and his coworkers [3]. The mechanism of electrochemical reduction of SiO2 to Si in molten CaCl2 was explained in another study [4]. Reduction rates of bulk SiO2 and porous SiO2 pellets were also compared previously and it was found that reduction rates for bulk plates were higher [5]. Furthermore, it was reported that mixing Si into porous SiO2 pellet increased the reduction rate [5]. Mo [2, 4-7], Ni [3, 8, 9] or Si [6] were used as cathode contacting materials in various studies. Yasuda et. al. [6] produced Si with 99.80 % purity using Si plates as cathode contacting material to reduce metal contamination."

The investment decision making process in the insurance and finance industries is affected by new advances such as simulation techniques. These advances have improved the discounted cash flow method (DCF). In DCF, a dynamic and flexible model construction is not possible because it does not consider uncertain conditions. Each project should be evaluated taking into account the related uncertainties because the related uncertainties determine the characterization of the project. Related uncertainties can be processed in dynamic DCF, which is applicable to both financial and non-financial industries with different kind of uncertainties, such as power generation and petroleum projects. The dynamic DCF method can estimate net present value (NPV) while managing related project uncertainties with a simulation method like Monte Carlo Simulation. The simulation method is preferred because its output is unbiased. Therefore, a more realistic financial evaluation of the project can be concluded. In spite of the improvement of dynamic DCF, this project evaluation method is not used frequently in mining industry. However, the mining industry is ideally suited to this concept because it is highly dependent on estimations such as orebody size and ore grade. During the project evaluation stage, these uncertainties can be included with the dynamic DCF method. This study aims to contribute to increasing the usage of this method in mining projects. A copper reserve in Turkey is selected as a case study to apply uncertainty assessment for the evaluation of NPV.

Problem statement: One of the most challenging safety problems in room-and-pillar coalmines is controlling roof falls during retreat mining. Roof falls not only cause both fatal and non-fatal injuries to miners, stoppages in mining operations, and equipment breakdowns, but also results in the inefficient recovery of coal reserves. Approach: Sufficient awareness of effective parameters related to roof falls is an important factor in roof control. In this study, the major contributing parameters on roof falls during retreat mining are introduced based upon experience and judgment acquired from extensive retreat mining case histories and a review of relevant literature. Key findings: The main roof fall parameters in retreat mining can be divided into three categories: geological, design, and operational. Key conclusions: The design and operational parameters can be controlled by the engineer and/or operator. By the appropriate selection of these parameters in the design and implementation stages of retreat mining, the roof fall risk can be decreased to an acceptable extent.

In Huoqiu region of Anhui Province, Fe2O3 occurs mainly in the form of specularite. Besides quartz, the gangue minerals include iron-bearing silicates such as chlorite and sericite which account for about 10% of the total gangue. The separation effect of conventional collectors is poor in the flotation of the minerals, that is, the average grade of iron concentrates is only 60-62%. Using the developed amphoteric collector can successfully realize not only the separation of specularite from various gangue minerals with results of iron concentrate grade above 65% and iron recovery of above 80% but also low temperature flotation at 15°C.

Following a study by NIOSH on the availability of teams in the U.S. as well as existing training sites and their capabilities, the Penn State University, leaders of the Pittsburgh Section of SME, providers of mine rescue equipment, and industry sponsors united to establish and make fully functional a student mine rescue team at Penn State University. With the growth of MERD and mine rescue competitive events at Missouri S&T, the Mine Training and Technology Center in PA, and at Colorado School of Mines Edgar Mine, a critical mass of effective training venues were made available to help student teams progress and develop mine rescue skills. The challenges to be met in creating and developing a student mine rescue team will be discussed. The rewards from this type of effort will be the quick capability of graduates from mining engineering programs to be involved in not only mining operations, but industry mine rescue teams and other leadership roles as well.

"Palabora Mining Copper has a unique ore body composition which unlike other copper ore bodies has three main components in significant proportions; these are copper bearing ore, magnetite and dolerite. The high content of dolerite, a hard barren material, creates a high proportion of pebbles which normally are recycled back to the mill. This action increases the mill bearing pressure and power progressively until corrective actions are taken.A logical action to solve the pebbles generation would be to incorporate a pebble crusher. This in fact was done however two fundamental issues were encountered; the high content of magnetite and existence of a cyclone classification section. Due to the high content of magnetite, metal detectors have not been able to work efficiently to separate tramp metal which causes damage to the pebble crushers. The existence of cyclones in the circuit had a detrimental effect on the final product when the pebbles crusher was online producing coarse sandy material.Due to the difficulties in treating pebbles via conventional procedures and the unique Palabora ore composition and characteristics, sorting technology was investigated at laboratory and pilot scale. It was found that a combination of optical and electromagnetic sorting could efficiently separate dolerite from the copper bearing and magnetite ores.This paper reports the findings of the laboratory and pilot scale work performed and discusses the additional benefits to the circuit."
