In a solvent extraction (SX) plant, stage efficiency calculations are used to determine mixer efficiency. With modern extractants and mixing equipment, it is generally taken for granted that stage efficiencies will be above 95%, but this is not always the case. Dependant on mixer/solution conditions, stage efficiencies can occasionally be low, therefore leading to higher reagent usage. Proper methods to identify when stage efficiency performance is below expectations, and ways to identify if it is an equipment or chemical issue are valuable tools for a plant metallurgist. With these tools and skills an on-site metallurgist can more quickly return their SX plant to proper operation. This paper will discuss methods for analyzing stage efficiency, evaluating factors that may affect stage efficiency, and evaluating the impact of stage efficiency on the overall operation.

In an earlier study (Deschênes et al., 2009), gold and silver were shown to be efficiently extracted from samples taken from the Kupol Mine in Russia using lead nitrate in a cyanide leach system. In the current study, a com-parison of the technical and economic merits of a new technology called CANMET enhanced leaching process (CELP) was made with the cyanidation/acidification-volatilization-recycling (AVR) process using eight metal-lurgical variability samples, as well as a large composite sample, which was to represent the initial two years of Kupol mill feed. The composite sample leach feed assayed 33.4 g/t Au and 289 g/t Ag. The metallurgical results from the large composite sample demonstrated that CELP produced very similar gold and slightly higher silver leach extractions compared to the conventional cyanidation/AVR leach conditions at 1/2 the cyanide concentra-tion (1,000 ppm NaCN in CELP vs. 2,000 ppm for cyanidation/AVR leach conditions). It was estimated that the total cost per ton was approximately the same for the two technologies (total cost of CELP with the use of Merrill-Crowe at $46.48/t, with cyanidation/AVR at $46.13/t). However, the implementation of CELP would eliminate a capital expenditure of approximately $5 million for an AVR system based on a 2005 feasibility level cost estimate. Eight variability samples used to confirm the composite sample results showed that, on average, the gold leach extractions with CELP and the conventional leach conditions were very similar, but the average silver leach extraction was 2.1% higher for CELP. Furthermore, CELP silver leach extraction was 4.6% higher on average compared to conventional cyanidation for the four mid-grade variability samples evaluated. The decision was made to remove AVR cyanide recovery from the flowsheet and implement CELP at Kupol. The ability to use the conventional leach equipment with CELP and simplify the flowsheet was also a factor, given the remote location of the Kupol Mine.

We have in southeast Kansas a variety of soils underneath which are a variety of subsoils compressed into what is commonly called “ hard pan.” These soils are of six types, ranging from a clay to a sandy loam. The surface soil in Cherokee County and Crawford County, of whatever quality or type is, generally speaking, from 6 to 12 inches in depth. The so-called “hard pan” ranges from the native grass roots to a depth of from 2 to 12 feet, and in some places even deeper than that.

"The electrochemical reduction of CO2 was performed in a laboratory-made, divided Htype cell. A copper electrode was used as the cathode. An Aldrich Nafion 117-type ion exchange membrane (0.18mm thickness) was used as the diaphragm. NaHCO3 and KHCO3 were studied as the catholytes. Hydrogen evolution from water reduction and products from CO2 electrochemical conversion were recorded. Higher CO2 reduction enhancement was observed by KHCO3 as compared to NaHCO3. The main conclusion of this work is that in fact CO2 can be electrochemically reduced with copper electrodes.1.-INTRODUCTIONThe direct electrochemical reduction of CO2 may allow for a simple process and, by avoiding high temperature reactors, would enable the process production rate to be quickly varied to follow the time of day availability of surplus electricity [1]. Temperature has a major effect on the electrochemical conversion of CO2 since its solubility increases when temperature decreases [2]. The electrical potential applied to the electrochemical reacting system will have an influence on the product distribution, as well. For example, a narrow potential range during cyclo-voltagraphic studies will determine the detection of a lower number of products. A recommended potential range to study the electrochemical reduction of CO2 is -2V to 2V. Moreover, the reaction rate on the electrode is governed by various processes, such as the kinetics of electron transfer, adsorption/desorption at the electrode surface, and diffusion of CO2 to the Cu electrode. The availability of active species, CO2 for electro-reduction, is extremely low at the vicinity of the electrode surface and it seriously interferes with the rate of mass transfer. In batch type electrolytic reactors, depletion of CO2 at the surface takes place first. CO2 from the bulk then has to diffuse to the electrode surface, resulting in mass transfer controlled kinetic phenomena. During the above process, several other competitive side reactions could suppress the primary reaction even though the cathode has good electro catalytic properties for reduction of carbon dioxide. When the dynamic supply of specific active species is ensured to electrode surface, the mass transfer effects are minimized to certain extent. Hence it is envisaged that a continuous flow reactor is more efficient for the electro-reduction of CO2 in CO2 saturated aqueous electrolytes. A technique has been developed that analyzes routine mill operating data to determine the key operating parameters responsible for gold losses to tails. These parameters represent the prime operating variables having a dominant effect on gold recovery. The technique quantifies these effects for the specific plant being analyzed, providing a tool to optimize recovery and costs and so enhance the mine?s cash flow. The quantitative relationships generated will be different for each ore and plant: every case is site-specific and has to be treated on its merits. Examples are provided to illustrate the considerable metallurgical and financial benefits which can be realized from optimization. The examples are taken from case studies of mills in four major gold mining districts of the world.

Excessive emissions of methane from the coal seams can have a serious adverse effect on both safety and productivity of longwall coal faces. Mechanization of coal faces has increased production possibilities to the extent that normal ventilation systems may not be able to ventilate coal face areas in order to lower methane content in the air to within legal limits. Production increases may therefore be prohibited for this reason, especially in gassy seams. Methane drainage from the coal seam by means of long holes and before production starts can act as a useful remedial action. In this paper a two dimensional mathematical model has been produced. The model that is based on finite elements, simulates a methane drainage system where the resultant risk is linked to the coefficient of diffusion, coal permeability, holes pattern and the duration for which the seam is subject to drainage. It is concluded that methane drainage of this type can assist in achieving production increases in many coals seems, especially where high gas content is a virtue of the seam.

"The possibilities of greenhouse gas mitigation using various methods are brought out. The special case of utilization of mixture of CO2 with other greenhouse gases in a synergetic way inside non-thermal plasma based system is described in detail.Measurements on pilot system comprising pyrolysis chamber as alternative energy system (production of hydrogen and liquid tar) were made for various biomass and waste as the input material. The exhaust from this system was treated with non-thermal plasma gap suitable for up to 650Nm3/hour of exhaust gas flow. Condensable portion of exhaust is liquefied in distillation unit; produced hydrogen is stored on-line inside nano sized carbon of our own production.The CO2 removal efficiency varies depending on exhaust composition between 45 to 98%. Other oxides as CO, NOx, SOx and several hydrocarbons and VOC are also removed. The main product connected with CO2 removal is a solid powder of proteinoid nature. There exist strong probability, that precursor of the origin of life on the Earth from primary atmosphere were formed in the similar way as it is present in the electric discharge system used. Our system is equipped with on-line as well as ex-post analysis of all forms of products. We have also developed a system for recuperation of all forms of produced heat. It is stored inside as latent heat of waxes.IntroductionNatural greenhouse effect on the Earth is caused mainly by water vapour with the average absolute concentration about 4%. Other gases able to absorb long-wave radiation and thus this causing greenhouse effect are CO2, CH4, N2O, halocarbons and as precursors ozone and NOX. Some of them we produce and introduce into atmosphere in large quantities during production of energy and in transport. This factor leads to permanent increase of average temperature of air, sea and oceans, so called global warming.Nowadays large amount of data exists showing that the temperature of Earth in the last 150 years has been continually increasing. It represents about 03°C per ten years and the most of climatologist believe, that the increased concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is responsible for this effect.The most important greenhouse gas is carbon dioxide CO2. Majority of CO2 emissions comes from electric power stations working with fossil fuels, cars and industry. Burning of fossil fuels contribute up to 80% to world wide anthropogenetic emissions of CO2."

Researchers from the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted geologic investigations in an area of the Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, ID, that included the 5300-107 demonstration stope using underhand longwall cut-and-fill mining. Structural analysis of the area suggested that argillite beds form planes of weakness between blocks of brittle quartzite, and energy may be released along these planes and at the junctures of fractures. Mapping argillite beds and fractures in the stope wall rock showed that the planes of these features diverged and that their attitudes corresponded from one wall to the other. Seismic analysis showed that the number and location of events varied as each cut was mined, with about 39 pct of the total number of events occurring above the cut being mined, about 54 pct below, and 7 pct at the same elevation.

The reliability of a set of flotation results is key to minimizing project risk, either at the commissioning of a concentrator or at the point of implementing an improvement to an existing concentrator operation. High-confidence flotation testing (HCFT) was developed for this purpose and is part of the list of technologies at various scales used by Xstrata Process Support (XPS) in addressing these projects. The methodology is based on two principles: one, to ensure that the ore sample is representative and has been well-blended and subsampled; two, to perform the flotation tests in sufficient numbers of replicates with appropriate quality controls, so as to improve the reproducibility of the test data. Across ten years of research on this methodology at Xstrata Process Support, Sudbury, several improvements to the HCFT method and complementary connections between sampling and quantitative mineralogy have been developed. Two case studies are reviewed. These show the capability of this system in both optimizing an existing concentrator operation and in serving a new mine scenario. The integrity of mine structures, such as the roofs, ribs, face and supporting pillars, is difficult to assess beyond the exposed surface. To mitigate potential rockfall hazards, the U.S. Bureau of Mines is assessing the usefulness of Rayleigh wave dispersion analysis to detect damage and stress-relieved zones in mine structures. Classical surface wave dispersion modeling is utilized at both laboratory and field scales in damaged and undamaged material to assess the integrity of a mine pillar and roof. To more fully exploit Rayleigh wave propagation characteristics, derivation of a novel dispersion parameter was conducted using a convolutional model. The development of a suitable Rayleigh wave dispersion system based on insight derived from forward modeling is presented. The application of inverse modeling for damage and stress assessment in the mine environment is also discussed.

Tin plating operations are of a complex nature due to the many operational variables that need to be controlled in order to create a product of required quality. The work in this report lays the basics for the control of a halogen plating operation based on the DuPont tinplating set-up with regard to the chemical make-up of the plating solution, as well as operational variables such as temperature and current density. To evaluate these aspects of the process, a rotating cathode Hull-cell set-up was used. This allowed for a laboratory scale plating arrangement that simulates industry closely with regard to chemical and hydro-dynamic considerations. Typical industry accepted standards were obtained for the values of operational variables and a ?baseline? test was conducted employing these standards. All subsequent tests conducted were benchmarked against this baseline result. A large suite of results was obtained in which it was found that changes could be made to the industry accepted norm which would improve on the stability of the operation and therefore the quality of the final tin-plated product. Examples of these results are: an increase in stannous tin concentration, an increase in sodium chloride concentration and a slightly elevated plating temperature. In addition, conditions were found that must be avoided to prevent instability and poor product quality.

The Renard kimberlite cluster is located in the Monts Otish region of Quebec, Canada. A Canadian National Instrument (NI) 43-101 compliant resource statement for the Renard kimberlites 2, 3, 4 and 9 and the Lynx kimberlite dyke was first issued in 2008 followed by a Preliminary Economic Assessment and the development of a conceptual mine plan. Following a successful drill program in 2009 that greatly expanded the amount of kimberlite in Renard 2, a revised resource statement was issued in December 2009 comprising 23 million carats of Indicated Mineral Resources and 13 million carats of Inferred Mineral Resources, a threefold increase on the previous estimate. The project is currently the focus of a second Preliminary Economic Assessment and it is expected that a full feasibility and permitting program will commence in 2010 leading to the creation of Quebec's first diamond mine by 2013.

The purpose of this report is to address the method of reducing the overall explosive weight of Explosively Formed Projectiles (EFPs) while still achieving satisfactory performance. This reduction is crucial in order to comply with outdoor explosives testing standards for Missouri University of Science and Technology’s (Missouri S&T’s) Experimental Mine. Initial EFP design testing exceeded given limitations, making reliable data difficult to ascertain. EFPs must be tested outdoors to allow for specific information recordings which aid in defending against them.

A depth-sensing micro-indentation technique is developed for evaluating mechanical properties of materials at elevated temperatures (to 1200°C). System description and design considerations of the test apparatus are described. Based on Hertzian spherical indentation approach, the micro-indentation test apparatus is capable of determining Young?s modulus and creep strength of test materials with flat, tubular, or curved architectures from room to 1200°C under either air or controlled gaseous environments. Calibration tests were conducted on a H13 Tool Steel coupon from 22°C to 500°C and single crystal Haynes 230 alloy at 1000°C with excellent agreement to the literature values. Indentation creep tests of Haynes 230 alloy were carried out at 1200°C with preliminary results showing good correlation to creep exponents. Further system refinements will be investigated, and additional testing will be conducted.

Equator Principles (EPs) are a set of guidelines developed and adopted by a series of financial institutions for assessing and managing social and environmental issues in project financing. Established in 2003, EPs are now adopted by some 68 financial institutions from 27 countries. As more and more financial institutions join this global initiative, it is important for project owners to have a logical framework embedded into the project lifecycle to reduce the risk of non-compliance which could result in costly delays. This paper outlines a proactive approach for project developers in order to integrate environmental and social aspects into entire project lifecycle.

The newly implemented mineral law framework exacerbated the need to clarify the roles and responsibilities of mine and land surveyors in the preparation and registration of plans and diagrams. The main concern is that survey tasks may be performed by persons who are not considered competent under the different laws. The methodology used was to analyse historic and present legislation on the issue in order to formulate a narrow interpretation of the current requirements. The major findings are tabulated to present a summary of who is responsible for which areas of survey.

This paper compares the predictions of the latest Institute of Makers of Explosives Safety Analysis for Risk (IMESAFR) model versus physical test data recovered from ISO-1 and ISO-2 tests in Woomera, SA. ISO-1 testing included placing 1054 kg (2324 lbs) of ANFO (ammonium nitrate-fuel oil) inside an ISO container on a flat bed truck. ISO-2 testing was identical except the NEW was 4000 kg (8818 lbs). The IMESAFR predictions are based on model runs using the best match available to the actual donor type involved in the test. This type of debris analysis is not the standard output of IMESAFR, as the program is designed to assess the probability of human fatality. However, all of the IMESAFR predictions presented were obtained from the use of the actual model equations and algorithms without adjustment. Test results from ISO-1 and ISO-2 will be presented as well as findings from the comparison between model results and actual explosive results from the ISO testing efforts.

Our program continually emphasizes the importance of making no tradeoffs between consumer acceptance of sustainable products and sustainability investments. We also work diligently to overcome the challenges of engaging employees around the world to implement a single coherent sustainability strategy that delivers great results.

My old passport from Czechoslovakia has a stamp with date 10-10-1968 at 10:00 AM, the exact time I crossed the border between the former Czechoslovak Republic and Austria. This date has an important meaning because I could not come back to my country for the next 21 years. The 40th anniversary of Soviet led invasion, which took place on the 21st of August 2008, revealed some unknown and long time kept secret news.

ABSTRACT Sorting has the potential to massively improve the pro?tability of mining base metal, hard-rock ores. However, several barriers to the increased application of sorting have been identi?ed, including a lack of mineral-speci?c sensors available to the industry. This paper presents the outcomes of acollaborative project to develop an induction-balance sensor speci?cally for low-grade copper and nickelores. A review of the basic principles of induction-balance sensing and of the sensor-rock interaction is presented. Early development and testing of the sensor on ores from the Thompson nickel belt in northern Manitoba is discussed. Shortcomings of the prototype identi?ed in early testing have now been over-come, leading to improvements in design and construction, as well as sensor accuracy. The improve dsensor has now been tested on additional ores from the Sudbury Basin, with good results. A discussion of potential applications is presented and recommendations for future development are made.
