MILLER, Canada. The nomination for President has attracted the attention of a large number of members, as is evidenced by the receipt of many hundreds of letters and postcards. Most of these favored either Sidney J. Jennings or Philip N. Moore, each of whom received many cordial endorsements. Such a wide interest on the part of the members is a very wholesome sign, but where there is so much activity it is natural to expect a certain amount of criticism. Some of the letters indicate that the authors feel that the nomination of President should be left entirely to the Committee on Nominations without any effort by the members at large to influence them. Others feel that the nominations are largely controlled by a small group and that the members at large can have little influence. As the result; of the experience of the last few months; a majority of the Committee on Nominations begs leave to suggest that the method of making nominations be changed so that two candidates, at least, for the various offices to be nominated, and suggests that the Directors appoint a committee to investigate this question thoroughly with. a view to making definite recommendations. In accordance with its opinion that the best interests of the Institute would be served by a change in the Constitution, allowing the nomination of two candidates, and in view of the fact that this Committee has no authority to make more than a single nomination for each office, considering the high standing of both Mr. Jennings and Mr. Moore and the large number of members favoring each of these gentlemen, this Committee respectfully suggests the desirability of ,the immediate nomination of Philip N. "Semi Autogenous (SAG) mills exhibit complex interactions between the competing processes occurring inside them. Traditional practice is to measure the operation of the SAG mill at an operating point in terms of its load, power draw, steel load, ore throughput rate, water addition rate and more recently the feed size distribution. However significant departures from standard operating conditions can occur due to changes, for example, in ore hardness, the quest for higher throughputs and mill internal geometry.Fundamental to SAG mill operation are the internal processes that ensure that a given ore throughput and discharge grind size are obtained and maintained. These processes can be measured using non-contact acoustic emissions from the SAG mills which utilise the information rich noise that is generated by the grinding, flow and charge movement inside a mill. Non-contact acoustic in-mill measurements can be used for the validation of discrete element modelling (DEM). The approach being reported in this paper is to model the individual physical processes and then to simulate the assemblage of a physical mill.By modelling the assemblage of steel balls in a 1 m pilot mill and duplicating the experimental arrangement exactly with the PFC3D model, it was possible to replicate the pattern of falling balls in the experimental mill. Furthermore, the key features of the acoustic emission spectrum that was calculated compared favourably to the measured spectrum at low frequencies. The experimental spectrum is shown in Figure 1."

Nuclear gauging is used world-wide in almost every industry. From mining and ore-grading to finished product, the metallurgical industry is one of the biggest users of nuclear sensors for inventory, process control, and quality assurance. This paper will discuss the basic theory of gamma transmission gauging techniques found useful in mining, milling and metal production. Techniques to be discussed are gamma transmission for level and density. A major new technique will also be discussed. This technique is called gamma backscatter. The uniqueness of this technology, how to apply and the differences between transmission and backscatter will be accentuated.

In this paper I will attempt to present an up to date review of the type of exploration' that has previously been carried out in Alaska, discuss some of the more significant past producers and recent discoveries, and suggest some approaches to future exploration. Hopefully this information may be of some use to those parties tempting to evaluate Alaska's non ferrous, non placer, metal potential or contemplating initiation of exploration in the state. II. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS Past production of non ferrous metals from lode deposits in Alaska has been meager considering the size of the state. Since there have been no major lode mines operative in Alaska since World War II, and since logistical conditions vary throughout the state, it is not possible to generalize with respect to mining costs in Alaska as compared to those in other areas. There seems to be little question, however, that a major deposit situated in a reasonably favorable location' could be profitably operating at present. Host of the known metal prospects in Alaska were discovered by early gold prospectors prior to World War I. From World War I through World War II exploration consisted chiefly of surface prospecting by prospectors on a diminished scale, as compared to the early gold rush days, drilling of some prospects by the U.S.B.M,, and occasional mine or prospect evaluations by mining companies. From the end of World War II to the present time, there has been a generally steady increase in exploration by mining companies consisting chiefly of prospect and district evaluations, large scale aerial reconnaissance programs in search of color anomalies, and regional drainage geochemical surveys. The post World War II increase in mining company exploration has not been matched by an increase in conventional surface prospecting.

Flotation is an operation widely used in mineral processing because of its aptitude to recover minerals of interest very efficiently. Flotation is often responsible for making possible the exploitation of mineral deposits of low concentration. In flotation various processes phenomena occur, some of which have still not been explained scientifically. Due to this fact, there are no models that can be widely applied in flotation control. Thus, in most cases, the control is done by experienced operators who are able to visually classify the types of foam into different categories and each one of them is associated with an operating actuation. In this situation, image analysis is configured as a solution that has already been employed in several ways. In this paper, a control strategy based on the colour of froth on a direct flotation of a nonferrous metal is presented. Moreover, the paper reveals the theoretical basis of the method, the critical points, difficulties and improvements that can be implemented. Data of grade were collected from the mineral of interest and RGB (red, green and blue) data of final concentrate of the froth. The mineral grade was collected and analysed during one month of operation and RGB was obtained using a camera. It was verified that the red colour showed the same trend of the grade curve in the concentrate. Thus, the use of this online data in optimising control was introduced. The laboratory grade is used to calibrate the colour set point. Therefore, it was possible to monitor in real time the trend of enrichment and depletion of a non-ferrous mineral in a flotation. It was possible to establish an online control strategy based on simple data acquisition. The result was an increase of 10% on production.

Much of the coal and gold mining industry of New Zealand is small scale. Funding is tight and mechanisation limited. The country has many well documented small coalfields (some with significant outcropping) and alluvial gold deposits. These are generally remote, difficult to access (physically and otherwise) and of submarginal value (largely a consequence of size when viewed for extraction by traditional techniques). The industry is also burdened by environmental and bureaucratic constraints. The above over simplified setting suggests to the Author, a newcomer to New Zealand, the opportunity to consider some novel concepts based on technology and techniques developed overseas or borrowed from other industry sectors. The objective being to make viable in economic and environmental terms projects that might otherwise be stillborn if considered for exploitation by conventional means. The paper mainly discusses 2 concepts focusing on the application of augers for exposed high wall or outcrop coal and micro-tunnelling augers for alluvial gold extraction. These may be considered high mobility 'container' (as in shipping container) packaged, or 'non invasive' mining systems. It is stressed that these are but concepts and have yet to be subjected to rigorous financial or engineering scrutiny. This could only follow their acceptance by, and input from, New Zealand miners. There will also be brief mention of a new modular conveyor system which might have application within the concepts or existing small scale mineral extraction operations and mention of a project currently in progress to apply tangible 'sustainability' to underground coal mining.

Mineral ownership determination is not always straight forward as in many cases the relevant details are not recorded on the latest Land Transfer title held in the local Land Registry Office. To determine mineral ownership can be difficult, time consuming and expensive especially in a confused sector. Non statute minerals can be owned by the Crown, Land Owner or other persons. Statute minerals (Gold, Silver, Petroleum, Uranium) are always owned by the Crown and thus present no problems. In simple terms the only accurate and reliable method of determining the mineral ownership under subject land is to historically search back to the first registration when the land and minerals were definitely intact. Then carefully ascertain from the evidence gathered along the way to the present day whether any legislation or private agreement altered or affected the status quo.

The Ferris-Haggarty underground mine was abandoned circa 1910, and portal discharge has since resulted in degradation of a trout fishery in the receiving waters of Haggarty Creek. Although tunnel discharge varies dramatically in volume throughout the year due to infiltration of snowmelt, compositionally it is a nearly constant low-TDS, pH-neutral, low-sulfate, copper-silicate dominated water. Between infiltration events, components of ARD accumulate in unsaturated, oxygenated environments within upper workings and are delivered to the main haulage level by the subsequent annual snowmelt flush. Mixing with non-ARD mine waters results in neutralization, dilution, and precipitation of amorphous copper carbonate and silicate phases. These mechanisms, combined with variations in the water balance, control the composition of the portal discharge. Understanding the chemical and hydrologic control mechanisms was critical to the design of a passive treatment system to decrease effluent copper concentrations.

Although alumina constitutes about ii percent of the earth's crust, it is expensive to separate and purify for the production of aluminum with the exception off the alumina in bauxite. The United states has a variety of non-bauxite resources that could substitute for bauxite, including high alumina clays, alunite, dawsonite in oil shale, anorthosite, and nepheline syenite. Each of these resources are discussed from the standpoint of geology, geography, processing, potential recovery, and environmental problems. Potential by-products include silica from clays, potash and sulfuric acid from alunite, soda ash from dawsonite, and soda ash and potash from anorthosite and nepheline syenite.

"Bauxite has been the almost universal ore of aluminum for about 100 years, with most of the world's reserves oc¬curring in the developing countries. As a result of fiscal and political activities prompted in part by the energy crisis, the formation of the IBA combined with increasing freight and labour costs, these reserves are no longer as competitive or as secure as they once were. This has given fresh impetus to the development of processes for alumina production that utilize raw material other than bauxite. Canada has no bauxite and it is prudent to look for alter¬native raw materials within our own boundaries suitable for one of these processes.Of the three igneous rocks that have been used as a source of alumina, only anorthosite is considered as a potential source in Canada. The Al content would be extracted by a sinter process, which currently requires a raw material with a. minimum of 28% Al2O2. Thus, about 4 tons of anorthosite and 10 to 12 tons of limestone are needed to produce one ton of alumina. There are two petrologically distinct types of anorthosite, one containing the plagioclase andesine-labradorite and around 26% Al2O3, and the other containing upwards of 30% Al2O3, in by¬townite-anorthite; for our purposes they may be con¬sidered as low- and high-alumina anorthosite respectively. The high-alumina anorthosites are somewhat rare; the low-alumina anorthosites are much more common, partic¬ularly in Eastern Canada. Geologically speaking, there is no shortage of anorthosite in Canada. The reserves are im¬mense, although their low Al2O3 content coupled with con¬siderations of location, access and proximity to limestone could be constraints to their development. Fly ash from coal-fired thermal power stations and nepheline syenite can also be used in a sinter process, but neither is likely to be utilized in Canada in the immediate future.The H+ process utilizes an acid attack to leach Al from a raw material with at least 20% Al2O3. One of the best raw materials is kaolinite-bearing clay; not only is it high in Al, but most of it can be extracted. With the possible exception of the Whitemud clay in Saskatchewan, Canada is apparently deficient in clays with sufficient reserves to support an alumina plant utilizing the H+ process. Low-alumina clays with illite and montmorillonite may also prove to be a suitable raw material if advantageously sited with respect to industrial centers. The average shale con¬tains only 15% Al2O33, much of which may be contained in minerals, such as feldspar, not amenable to acid leaching. If shale is used as a source of alumina, it will be because it contains some other valuable commodity, such as oil or uranium, the extraction of which leaves the spent shale upgraded in extractable Al2O3 and lowers the over-all costs to a point where it is economic, Thus, rejects from coal washing plants are most commonly considered as a source of alumina; they are already mined, are available in large and ever increasing amounts, and may contain significant amounts of combustible material which upgrades the Al2O3, content of the resulting ash. Coal rejects from existing and developing coalfields in Alberta and British Columbia are a possible source of raw material, but present data indicate they may contain insufficient Al2O3."

A Large Sub-structure with open top of S.Y.P. float line requires a 90m x 50m in plan and 13m-deep excavation in soft soil, Shanghai. The geological conditions in site are rather severe. The technology specifies that no permanent braces nor partition walls are allowed to be constructed inside. After a series of discussions the scheme of semi-gravity type cellular D-walling without any braces or earth anchors is finally adopted and successfully executed by SFEC. This paper deals with the technical problems in the design, construction and in-situ monitoring we met with in this difficult project.

A variety of ZnO nanostructures such as sea-urchin-like structures composed of nanowires and nanorods, nanocombs, nano/micro spheres and cages, star-shaped ZnO nanostructures, flower-shaped nanostructures, needle-like nanostructures etc. have been synthesized applying two different fabrication techniques i.e. thermal evaporation and cyclic feeding chemical vapor deposition techniques at different reaction parameters such as reaction temperature, growth period, reactant concentrations, types of source material and substrates etc. It was observed from the experiments that the morphologies of the grown structures were highly influenced by the reaction parameters and fabrication techniques and specific morphology can be obtained at particular reaction parameters in a specific synthetic procedure. Extensive morphological investigations of the obtained products demonstrate that the grown structures are single crystalline and having a wurtzite hexagonal phase. Room-temperature photoluminescence spectra of all the deposited products exhibited good optical properties. Finally, the growth process of the fabricated structures were proposed and discussed in detail.

High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) are mostly used prior to pelletising processes to increase the specific surface area (SSA) of iron ore concentrate. For expressing SSA, the Blaine index is utilised as one of the most important dimensional properties of iron ore pellet feed. ISO 21283 is a standard test method that explains the manual of Blaine air-permeability apparatus for determination of this parameter. In this standard, the disaggregation method is based on passing the minus of 1 mm samples from the 0.150 mm sieve. The disaggregation process has an effective role on the results of Blaine airpermeability test especially for regrinding HPGR products. In this research, firstly the Blaine index of samples was measured without disaggregation. Following this, disaggregation was done by passing the minus of 1 mm samples through three sieves with different dimensions, 0.150, 0.090 and 0.045 mm, separately, and the Blaine index was calculated for each one. Finally, lab-mill with rubber balls, called Jar mill, was investigated as another option. Screen analysis and image analysis with SEM were performed to evaluate the effects of the sample's disaggregation on the size distribution and agglomeration of samples. The results showed that the disaggregation method with sieve size 0.150 mm, according to ISO 21283, was not applicable for HPGR products because the particles were still stuck together. In addition, the disaggregation method with the sieve size 0.045 mm or with Jar mill offered reasonable results. Heavy machinery such as AG and SAG mills generate a significant amount of noise due to the processes that are occurring inside them. From an environmental perspective, the level of noise generated is a significant occupational safety hazard. However from a technical perspective the noise presents an opportunity to determine some details of the processes occurring inside the mills. The noise generated is not random and can be attributed to a range of events that occur inside these mills, consequently non-contact acoustic determinations of in-mill behaviour provide powerful insights into the operation of the primary comminution tumbling mills. Traditionally, the use of perfect mixing has been assumed when modelling the operation of AG/SAG mills. If this were true then the acoustic emissions from AG/SAG mills would be uniform along the length of the mill. Experimentally this has been found not to be the case. From another perspective it should not be the case because of the different conditions existing at the feed end compared to the discharge end. This paper presents the results determined by non-contact acoustics and their analysis in terms of understanding of the mechanisms occurring inside a mill.

Information of liquid steel flow patterns inside the mold may be obtained from the velocity at the free surface (meniscus). This meniscus flow may be measured using the contactless electromagnetic technique termed Lorentz force velocimetry (LFV). It is based on the measurement of Lorentz forces acting on a magnet system when an electrically conducting metal melt interacts with the field lines stretched by the magnet system. Force sensor and the magnet system form a so-called Lorentz force flowmeter. In this paper we present a series of model experiments that demonstrate the feasibility of using two identical flowmeters that are arranged in a certain distance one behind the other. In this case, surface velocity may be determined by just cross-correlating the two force signals recorded by the two sensors. This technique is called time-of-flight LFV. A special prototype of a respective measuring device, called meniscus velocity sensor (MVS), has been developed to measure local free-surface velocity. In the present paper we describe experimental results of respective measurements in the model test stand LiMeSCo (liquid metal surface velocity correlation). To check the potential of the time-of-flight technique, in a first step we measure surface velocities during solid-body rotation of metallic substances. We observe that small modulations in the signals that are due to the natural unevenness of the solid body can be used to determine surface velocities. In a second step we apply the time-of-flight technique to liquid metal free-surface flow. Here we use the low-melting eutectic alloy GaInSn as a test melt. In this case we observe that the cross-correlations between the signals are much rarer and much weaker than in the solid-body experiments. We conclude that the presence of the localized magnetic fields, produced by the permanent magnets of the flowmeter, give rise to intense deformation of the free surface and the creation of surface waves. The field acts as a magnetic obstacle. We observe that the flow velocity is decreased right underneath the magnetic field and is accelerated in the side regions. This magnetic obstacle effect may restrict the determination of the local surface velocity in application.

The use of shock tube in the blasting industry is relatively well characterized and understood within the realms to which it is used. Non-conventional uses of shock tube within the EOD and the Aerospace Industry however has not been as widely researched and published. Characteristics of shock tube such as its reliability, simplicity and its non-electric nature make it ideal for functioning or driving mechanical mechanisms, detonators, and timing devices. Outlined in the text are the performance characteristics of shock tube in an array of atmospheric environments including pressures ranging from ambient to 100,000 ft equivalent atmosphere. In addition the useful exit work energy or impulse of the shock tube for driving these various EOD and Aerospace mechanisms is published as a function of tube lengths and atmospheric pressures. Of particular interest to these devices is the required length of shock tube needed to produce the steady state detonation energies and the accompanying properties of the shock tube at these lengths. Various sources publish an arbitrary run distance for steady state detonation and output some where between 20 cm and 1.0 meter. Statistical and experimental evidence with in the text show these numbers to be low and provides an updated reference for shock tubes usage in nonconventional situations.

A number of novel solutions have been proposed in recent years as alternatives to props and tie-backs in deep excavation support e.g. Adekunte (2008), Deschamps et. al. (2008), Adekunte et al. (2010) and Adekunte (2014). A number of these non-standard restraining solutions involve the construction of permanent or temporary vertical or raking buttress piles that are rigidly connected to the excavation support wall at regular intervals along the wall run. This paper chiefly focuses on the design and construction of twin-vertical buttress piles as restraining systems behind or in front of embedded retaining walls. The system essentially relies on the push-pull mechanism that develops between the twin piles, to maintain the overall stability of the excavation support. The paper’s main areas of concentration include; finite element modelling, geostructural design, construction procedure, instrumentation and monitoring that are associated with the application of twin- buttress pile systems. These are supported with project details of three recently completed high-end luxurious residential developments in Greater London, England, on which the twin-buttress pile system was used to restrain the excavation support walls for the basements on the sites. The mode of application of the system varies across the three sites. While the system was adopted as a long term solution behind the retaining wall on one of the sites, it was designed and constructed for temporary use in front of the retaining walls on the other two sites. Instrumentation and monitoring results from all the sites show the non-traditional system to be safe and effective, whilst having significant beneficial effects on construction programme, sequence of works and project cost.
