Recent mineral exploration successes in the Proterozoic rocks of the Mount Isa Inlier are unprecedented in the regionÆs history. This new era of discovery, particularly for æblindÆ deposits, owes its origin to perseverance and advances in geoscience and exploration techniques, notably geophysics. Prospective host rocks outcrop over more than 50 000 km2 of the Mount Isa Inlier and extend a further 100 000 km2 below cover. They contain major deposits of copper, lead, zinc, silver and phosphate (Georgina Basin) and significant deposits of gold, uranium and cobalt. The discovery in 1923 of silver, lead and zinc at Mount Isa established the regionÆs world-class mineral potential. Since 1990, major orebodies have been discovered at Cannington (silver-lead-zinc), Century (zinclead-silver), Ernest Henry and Osborne (copper-gold) and extensions to known deposits at Dugald River and George Fisher (zinc-lead-silver), and Esperanza (copper). This success is of global significance and reflects a prospectivity upgrade since widespread copper mineralisation was discovered and mined in the Cloncurry district a century ago.

The Mount Isa Mines Copper Mine in Mount Isa started producing copper in 1966. The Copper Mine gradually increased production rates to nearly six million tonnes per year. Over the last three years the mine has been in a gradual ramp down due to the reduction of primary ore sources and head grade. The majority of ore sources are predominantly in pillar retreat sequences bounded by multiple fill masses. There also a substantial lower grade resource delineated to the south of the main orebody. These remaining ore sources present significant engineering challenges to obtain a safe and cost-effective extraction. Stope designs have become increasingly complex and require additional engineering and operations input and analysis. This paper describes the major planning and operational challenges and issues associated with the stope design and extraction of an orebody in the later stages of mine life.

The Mount Isa Mines (MIM) copper concentrator at Mount Isa processes both chalcopyrite ore from the MIM underground mine and rotary holding furnace (RHF) slag from the MIM copper smelter. There have been numerous changes to the processing practices since commissioning this concentrator in 1973. Current management of the concentrator extends from grinding and flotation to concentrate handling (thickening and filtration) and tailings disposal (fill plants, tailings thickeners and process water systems).Predominant mill feed through the concentrator is chalcopyrite ore. RHF slag is processed when concentrator production exceeds mined ore production. The chalcopyrite circuit has two stages of grinding in parallel lines (Line 1 and Line 2). Each line has parallel preflotation and rougher banks, combining into a common scavenger/retreat circuit (including regrinding) and common cleaner circuit. RHF slag may be milled in parallel with chalcopyrite, utilising Line 2 flotation roughers and a Jameson cell cleaner. All final concentrate produced is combined and pumped to the concentrate handling plant. The concentrate is thickened, pre-fluxed and filtered in hyperbaric disc filters. Fluxing specification is set by the copper smelter, and filtered product transferred via conveyor belt to the smelter concentrate storage facility.Wet fill and paste fill plants utilise flotation final tailings as hydraulic or cemented hydraulic fill for stopes underground. Cement ratios and fill plant utilisation are varied depending on underground stope fill requirements. Tailings from the adjacent lead-zinc concentrator are also processed at wet fill. All tailings that are not utilised for backfill are pumped via wet fill to three parallel tailings thickeners. Thickener underflows are gravity fed to the tailings dams with thickener overflows recycled for site process water use. In addition to summarising historical operations, this paper will provide a detailed outline of more recent changes in the concentrator flotation circuit, equipment upgrades, reagent optimisation as well as product and process optimisation at the final concentrate handling and fill plants.CITATION:Lui, W Y and Radulovic, P, 2013. During the 1960s chalcocite ore was mined from the Black Rock open cut. A large amount of this uneconomic material was not treated by the No 3 Concentrator at the time and as a consequence a surface stockpile was created which contained 750 000 tonnes of material at an average of 1.5 per cent copper.Laboratory trials indicated that due to oxidation, an average of 25 per cent of the copper was water soluble and the remaining copper was leachable using a sulphate/ferriclbacterial leach. On the basis of these trials it was decided to investigate the feasibility of producing copper via a leach SX-EW process. The investigation proved the process was feasible, so began the design, construction and commissioning of a 10 tpd (cathode copper) Copper Leach SX-EW Pilot Plant. CMPS Pty Limited in a joint venture with John Holland Engineering Pty Limited were awarded the turnkey contract for the design, construction and commissioning of the Pilot Plant.

Many mining companies, by their remoteness of location from source of power, have to generate their own power and must experience the same problem that had to be met when deciding to increase the capacity of the power station. At present the Company is treating approximately 54,000 tons of ore mined per month, and the present shift average load. is approximately 8,500 kW. at 0.8 power factor, generated at the power plant, the observed peak load being 10,500 kW.It is proposed to increase the tonnage of ore treated to include 36,000 tons of copper ore, in addition to the present 54,000 tons of lead ore. The average load is estimated to be approximately' 16,000 kW. with a peak load of 17,500 kW. The estimate provides for power of 1,000 kW. to be supplied to the north end leases in the next 12 months, also for increased ventilation in the mines.There are installed in the main power station three turbo alternator sets each of 5,000 kW.; normally two sets are run in parallel and one set is a standby unit. A 12,500 kW. set is being installed and proposed loading with the increased tonnage will require the 12,500 kW. set and one 5,000 kW. set, or alternatively, the three 5,000 kW. sets When the 12,500 kW. set is down for service. "Mount Isa Mines (MIM) acquired a reputation for the successful application of R&D to develop break-through technologies for the mining industry starting in the 1978’s through until the early 2000’s. The ISAPROCESSTM tank-house technology has been licensed to copper refineries throughout the world, and a significant per cent of the world’s copper is refined using this technology. Since development in the late 1980’s more than 20 ISASMELTTM copper and lead smelting furnaces are now installed in countries around the world. Jameson Cell flotation technology developed jointly by Mount Isa Mines and Professor Graeme Jameson is widely used in the Australian coal mining industry and increasingly in the base-metal and gold industry. The IsaMillTM’s developed at Mount Isa and McArthur River made it possible to develop the McArthur River and George Fisher orebodies and has been successfully implemented into base metal fine grinding applications around the world. The most recent commercialised innovation is the atmospheric leach Albion ProcessTM with its supersonic HyperSpargeTM gas sparger, is being adopted as a solution to the increasing complexity of orebodies. MIM’s contribution to the industry was significant given the size and the remote location of its operations with Townsville Copper Refineries more than 1350 km and Mount Isa 1800 km from the nearest state capital of Brisbane. This paper will briefly discuss the development of each of these technologies and why MIM – now owned by Glencore - was so successful innovating and developing such technologies over a period of nearly 40 years.INTRODUCTION Mount Isa is located in the Gulf Country region of Queensland about 1800 kilometers North West of Brisbane (see Figure 1). It came into existence because of the world class mineral deposits found in the area. In 1923 the orebody containing lead, zinc and silver was discovered by the miner John Campbell Miles. Mount Isa Mines Limited (MIM) was founded in 1924 to develop the minerals discovered by Miles, but production did not begin until May 1931. It paid its first dividend in 1947 after 16 years of troubled production. In 1954 the 1100 copper orebody was discovered and with rapidly rising reserves during the 1950’s and 1960’s led to the construction of new concentrators to treat lead/zinc/silver ores in 1966 (#2 concentrator) and copper ore’s in 1973 (#4 concentrator). The difficult nature of the Mount Isa lead-zinc orebodies has meant that the company had always needed to be at the forefront of mining technology. In the 1970’s through to the 1990’s, it became a world leader in developing new mining techniques and processing technologies as a response to declining metal prices and rising costs. Mount Isa has been smelting copper since 1953 and lead since the early 1930’s. Copper Refining at Mount Isa’s fully owned subsidiary of Copper Refineries Proprietary Limited (CRL) had commenced operations in 1959."

Glencore’s Mount Isa Mines Limited (MIM) operates the Mount Isa open cut and underground copper (Cu) and zinc-lead (Zn/Pb) mines near Mount Isa in Queensland, Australia. Tailings from processed Cu and Zn-Pb ore is contained in a 1,315 ha shallow (< 35 m deep) multi-cell valley fill tailings storage facility (TSF). Static geochemical testing conducted by MIM over the life of mine (LoM) verifies that the Cu, and Zn-Pb tailings has a wide range in sulfide content and diverse mineralogy with significant acid neutralising capacity (ANC) in some samples. The tailings are predominantly classified as potentially acid forming (PAF) using static analytical methods. Kinetic leach testing using free draining columns and humidity cell tests simulating tailings placed on the surface of the TSF suggest that the tailings samples are likely to remain non-acid forming (NAF) for 10 to 40 years under aerial exposure, and much longer than this under saturated conditions within the TSF. During this period of weathering, as ANC is depleted, the neutral pH drainage may contain elevated concentrations of some elements including sulfate, manganese and zinc. Six hundred miles inland from Australia's east coast Port of Townsville in Queensland's sea of rock and spinifex lies Mount Isa. The town, as in most mining towns, is dominated by its mine and the mine in turn is dominated by its 503 ft copper smelter stack. This candy and white painted stack is a striking introduction to one of the world's greatest copper producing mines and a town where people of over 40 different nationalities live remote but well. Mount Isa Mines Limited is surging into the ranks of' the world's great mines on the momentum of a relentless push begun in 1956. It is as if the time lost in the lean years of the past should be caught up in a hurry.

Such are the rigors of climate and topography of western Tasmania, that much of the area has remained uninhabited. The mountains, rising to peaks above 5000 ft high, receive the winds out of the west and precipitate 110 in. of rainfall a year on this coast. The drenched forests have a primordial look with such unfamiliar trees as the tru-sassafras, blackwood, cheesewood, ti tree, and man tree ferns. Prospectors speak of the "horizontals," trees which, in the dense foliage, grow out flat. When the explorer climbs over them he does not come back to the ground but continues forward on dense vegetation with the ground many feet below. Gold was discovered by the intrepid prospectors of the late nineteenth century and stamp mills were erected in the vicinity of Zeehan and Queenstown. At Mount Lyell, mining began for gold in the ironstone capping. The familiar story, of course, is that copper was found beneath the gossan and it was this mineralization that lead to permanent mining operations. Two companies began mining at Mount Lyell and their history from 1893 to 1902 was marked by an unreasonable competitiveness, human perversity and technical difficulties. The North Lyell and Mount Lyell companies were mining copper ores within one mile of each other separated only by a ridge. Each company built its own railroad and harbor. For six years of struggle both companies tried to work out the metallurgical problem which was the key to profit. Although they didn't know it, the two ores were complimentary and could have been smelted together. North Lyell ore was strong in silica and weak in iron, whereas Mount Lyell was fortunate in having a first-class metallurgist in Robert Sticht, from Brooklyn, N. Y., who in 1902 successfully achieved pyritic smelting without the use of carbon fuel.

The 14,350 m (47,000 ft) Mount MacDonald Tunnel is nearing completion. North America's longest railroad tunnel is being advanced from each end by two contractors. This presentation outlines techniques employed by the Manning Kumagai Joint Venture, working from the west portal. Rapid construction was achieved by simultaneous installation of cast in place arch-wall lining and drill and blast excavation. Extensive planning, judicious choice of equipment and efficient crews combined to shorten the original schedule. Manning Kumagai was also awarded the tunnel mid-section as a separate contract. This includes construction of an underground chamber and structure for a unique permanent ventilation system.

"The Mount Milligan mine, located in central British Columbia, began operation in September 2013 with a design nameplate capacity of 62,500 dry metric tonnes per day, using a conventional SABC grinding circuit followed by bulk sulphide flotation. Over the last few years, many changes have been implemented in order to debottleneck and optimize the comminution circuit to meet and exceed the nameplate design capacity as well as improve the metal recovery of the flotation circuit. This paper discusses changes, grouped into mechanical modifications, projects, and operational changes. The implementation of these changes as well as ongoing challenges and potential solutions will also be discussed.INTRODUCTION The Mount Milligan mine began production in the fall of 2013. It is a conventional truck-shovel open pit gold and copper mine and concentrator with a 62,500 tpd design capacity copper-gold flotation processing plant. The average head grades for the life of mine are 0.18% Cu and 0.39 g/t Au. At full capacity, the mine produces an average 400 dry tonnes per day of copper-gold concentrate containing approximately 21.5% Cu and 50-60 g/t Au. Current mine life is 21 years. This paper will discuss a selection of the operational, engineering, and administrative changes that have been made at the site since the publication of An Update on Reaching Nameplate Throughput and Continuous Improvement at Mount Milligan (Yue, 2017). PLANT FLOWSHEET CONFIGURATION Run-of-mine ore is crushed through a 60-110 gyratory crusher to a top size of seven inches. Up to 100% of the gyratory crusher product is diverted to the secondary crushing circuit by a moveable gate. The material diverted to the secondary crushing circuit is fed to a vibrating double-deck screen. The screen oversize is placed on a surge pile and reclaimed by four vibrating feeders to feed two 1250 kW standard head cone crushers in open circuit. The screen undersize is combined with the crusher discharge and returns to the conveyor feeding the coarse ore stockpile along with primary crusher product that by-passes the diverter gate."

The 50 million tonne Mount Morgan gold-copper deposit (4.99 g/t Au, 0.72 per cent Cu) was an irregular pipe-like body of quartz and pyrite, with subordinate chalcopyrite, magnetite and gold. Mineralisation was hosted by the Middle Devonian Mine Corridor Volcanics which occur as a roof pendant within the Late Devonian Mount Morgan Tonalite. On three sides, the deposit was enclosed by a series of normal, concave, listric faults and surrounded by outward-dipping Mine Corridor Volcanics. The tonalite which bounded the western side of the deposit transgresses the domal structure with no apparent interference. A pipe of intense, texturally-destructive, quartz-sericite-chlorite ¦ pyrite underlay and partly surrounded the deposit.The volcanic setting of the deposit, its shape, metal content and associated footwall alteration are consistent with a subsea-floor replacement origin for the gold-copper mineralisation. Mineralogical studies have confirmed the deposit has been recrystallised and annealed by a thermal metamorphic event, most likely the intrusion of the Mount Morgan Tonalite. Pyrrhotite Pipe mineralisation replaces annealed massive pyrite, suggesting that it formed during retrogressive metasomatism associated with tonalite emplacement. Telluride minerals have a close association with chalcopyrite, and no evidence for a late telluride paragenetic stage was observed. Telluride mineralisation is inferred to be genetically related to the massive sulphide mineralisation, and a separate magmatogenic origin for this mineralisation is discounted.

THE irregularity of the Mount Morgan ore body presents problems other than those for mining only. For irregularity of outline is coupled with irregularity of grade, and the ore varies so rapidly from profitable to non-profitable, and from highly siliceous to highly pyritic, that the task of estimating quantities and values of ore reserves is manifestly rendered a difficult one, while the actual disposal Of the broken ore demands constant supervision.Four classes of ore are handled. The oxidized ore, cheaply mined and cheaply treated, is obtained by quarrying from the top of the mountain. Below the 315-ft. mine level (measured from the original summit) sulphide ore comes in, and this is divided into siliceous sulphide ore (too siliceous for economic smelting), sulphide ore suitable for smelting, and ore too poor either to be smelted or to be treated by wet process with the siliceous ore. Four generations ago, the Mount Morgan ore deposit sustained the hurly-burly of frantic development common to the finding of a rich discovery. In this case, it was gold discovered in gossan capping on one of the hills of the Dee Range. The bonanza ore, like the flush of youth, has been spent. Today, one recognizes in this operation the orderly manner of the senior citizen, keeping up with the times and husbanding resources. As mining towns go, Mt. Morgan has an enviable situation. The approach is from Rockhampton, Qld, a peaceful, affluent agricultural and cattle center near the sea. To reach the mine, one goes 22 miles, first across farming country, passing orange groves and occasional children on horseback. The ascent into the Dee Range is winding and rapid. In the winter, the hills are green and Bougainvillaea and flowering yellow bracken grow wild on the hillsides. Around a bend, the brown waste terraces of the mine come into view, rising above the surrounding country. The top of the mountain has been sawed off and a deep pit sunk into the core. A little further on, around a few more curves, the town of Mt. Morgan is seen nestling comfortably in the hollows, reaching up the slopes.

The Mount Morgan mine occupies a unique place in the mining history of Australia and although not as glamorous during the second phase of its existence, it made a significant contribution to the technical and financial history of the nation throughout its life. The stories of the intrigue surrounding its discovery and early operation, the enormous return received by its original investors in its first five years as a public company, its influence on the local, national and international scene to its final closure have been documented in many publications, the most recent and authoritative being by John Kerr (1982). Institute publications as far back as 1911 have documented details of the mining, metallurgical and engineering practices of the two companies which worked the 100 or so acres which were alleged to be `the richest single gold mine in the world'. Within the Institute records appear the names of Presidents, Institute Medal recipients and others connected with Mount Morgan who have played an important part in the Institute history.

Coal mine bumps are normally associated with pillar mining under moderate or deep cover. Severe bumps at Sunnyside, however, have not been confined to pillar lines. Many have occurred in virgin development and in localities a long way from active pillar workings. As early as 1918 bumps in virgin territory were attributed to the faulted structure in the Sunnyside area.1 Sunnyside is an old property, mined for more than 60 years. Both man-made and natural conditions contribute greatly to bump occurrences, and loss of life and great destruction of workings have resulted from some unusual bumps in recent years.
