Underground raises and slots are a vital part of underground blasting operations. Raises and slots are vertical shafts or openings used for ventilation, ore passes, or creating voids in stopes. In the author’s experience, raise and slot designs can vary significantly from operation to operation or even within a single operation, sometimes for reasons unknown. The results of the various designs can differ depending on drilling accuracy, geology, and the explosives used in the design. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the recommendations found in published literature on raise and slot design in one document, while incorporating some of the author’s own experience with optimizing raise and slot designs in underground operations. Some inspiration is also included from burn round designs; small versions of raises drilled horizontally in development blasting rounds. This document includes discussion points on drillhole diameter and depth, pattern design and relief requirements, explosive types and loading recommendations, and timing. Ultimately, this document can be useful to those looking to design a raise or slot blast for the first time or for those looking to improve on the results from the raise and slot blasts used at their operations.

"The knowledge of the true phase composition of the liquid slag is a very important problem, mastering of which grants the possibilities for the scientifically founded choosing of the decoppering method of the autogenous smelting slags. The investigation using different methods of the phase composition of the flash quenched autogenous copper melt's slags has shown, that the most effective method of the slags' decoppering during smelting with the white matte production is the flotation of the recrystallized slags. In this work the authors posed the problem to realize the slags quenching with the rates similar to those, which are used in the modem investigations devoted to the flash quenching of the ironcontaining alloys, with the subsequent study of the quenched samples using the Mossbauer spectroscopy methods in order to establish the connection between the liquid slag's structure and the metals losses with the slag."

THE older coal chemist had a much simpler conception of coal than we have today. To him coal was a mineral composed essentially of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, ash, and water, in various proportions. His studies on the constitution of coal were directed along the conventional lines of proximate and ultimate chemical analyses and making deductions from these data without any real appreciation of the fact that coal is a conglomerate of various chemical compounds, including many of the most complex structures known to organic chemistry. The view of the modern coal chemist is well expressed by Franz Fischer, I who says that while proximate and ultimate analyses are important both from the scientific and technical point of view, they tell the chemist no more concerning the number and kinds of chemical compounds that constitute coal than the reader would learn of the contents of a book if told that the printed contents consisted of 15 per cent. of the letter "e," 5 per cent. of the letter "n," 1 per cent. of the letter "g," 4 per cent. of the letter "b," etc. As the reader must have the grouping of letters into words and words into sentences, so the chemist must have the grouping of atoms into molecules and the proportion of each molecular compound in the coal aggregate before he acquires an adequate knowledge of the constitution of coal. The mining industry has made strides in planning for operations to be safe for the workforce and public, to protect the natural environment, and to maximize value for shareholders. However, many of the techniques used to accomplish these goals are based on estimated models of mineral content, production efficiency, and economic performance. The industry has begun to recognize the need for understanding the uncertainty in these models, how it affects their decisions, and what the potential impacts are for each project. The challenge has become how technical professionals can effectively communicate the impact of this uncertainty and its importance to both technical and non-technical audiences. This paper presents mining engineers (and other technical professionals) with traditional and modern principles of data visualization and technical communication that can assist with communicating the effects of uncertainty in the mine planning process.

Here, in what is partly a review and partly a personal viewpoint, I take stock of changes in emphasis and comprehension on the subject of basaltic volcanism in the decade that has passed since the completion of the landmark Basaltic Volcanism Study Project (1981). I concentrate attention on the relatively neglected physical-volcanology aspects (in 1988 it was still possible to publish a 340-page book on flood basalts with barely any mention of physical mechanisms).I adopt the useful unifying concept of "volcanic system" to embrace the invariably-present intrusions as well as the volcano; I consider controls exercised by magma-supply rate and modulator-mechanisms on the nature of the system;I emphasize that sheeted-intrusion complexes, consisting either of dikes or inclined sheets (depending on the ability of the system to expand laterally) occur in all eroded major systems and fuel geothermal systems; I show how constraints set by cooling of narrow intrusions cause such complexes to be wedge-like and produce considerable rotations; I consider the role of the level of neutral buoyancy in making magma chambers possible, causing lateral subsurface magma flow and localizing intrusions, while the LNB itself can be accentuated by intrusions; and I examine the possibility that underwater systems could have very different internal structures from systems on land.

The development of welded pipe has paralleled the general industrial development and, in particular, that of the petroleum industry. The petroleum industry's need for high-grade, economical pipeline material to make many 'of its projects feasible has been a significant factor in the development of light-wall, high-grade welded pipe. The modern welding processes, such as high-frequency, electric resistance, flash, submerged arc, etc., have some basically different characteristics. The modern high-frequency weld mill is a complex of specialized equipment that is integrated into a production unit. Each component in the unit performs a specific function in the production process. Quality control must be built into the process on an operating basis and, to maintain the quality required for pipeline standards, must be more than a policing operation. The further development of the welded pipe industry will be determined by changing and increasing demands. The technical and economic views and requirements that will influence the development have to be resolved.

Welding is playing an important role in the manufacture of construction equipment as used in the mining industry. It provides design possibilities which are unique to this method of manufacture, and normally makes possible lighter weight but stronger products, which can be a definite advantage to a user. Welding is an industry that has experienced major developments over the past decade, all of which have improved our capability to make better welds and make them more economically. International Harvester Company has been introducing these newer welding methods into its manufacturing plants, particularly those producing construction equipment, just as fast as their value has been proven. This paper discusses how modern welding methods are contributing to the manufacture of strip mining equipment.

Through the application of the Rietveld method, X-ray diffraction analysis has developed into a fully quantitative method for phase analysis of metallurgical products. The Rietveld method itself has progressed from an unstable method that required constant operator intervention to a stable and robust method suited even for routine process control. Knowledge of the crystal structures of the major phases is essential for Rietveld analysis, and these are well known for most minerals and major phases in metallurgical products. It provides the basic structural information necessary for the determination of mineral stoichiometry and for elucidating solid solution behaviour. Modern methods, such as simulated annealing and charge flipping, permits the determination of crystal structures from powder data. Unit cell data can be used where conventional microchemical analysis is unable to provide an answer to the extent of solid solution in ilmenite roasting. Unit cell data (by XRD) is used to determine the amount of roasting necessary for the development of magnetisation to be able to separate chromite from an ilmenite concentrate. Phase quantification is probably the most widely used application of XRD analysis. It is used for materials balance in the minerals and cement industries, and it is finding novel applications in the iron and steel industry. Applications of XRD in high-temperature metallurgical processes are increasing. In this paper the phase chemistry of iron ore sinters, the evaluation of subsolidus reactions in titania slags and the identification of furnace accretions are discussed. Despite the success of the Rietveld method in phase quantification, the method still needs further development in the quantification of closely related or polytypic phases. The quantification of pyrrhotite phases using various Rietveld programs still gives ambiguous results. This is also true for the different SFCA phases in iron ore sinters. Clearly the analysis of similar phases, differing only in the presence of weak superlattice reflections is still problematic.

X-ray diffraction (XRD) provides useful information about the composition of an ore sample in terms of quantification of crystalline phases and amorphous content. The use of new, fast detection systems implemented in CubiX FAST industrial diffractometers creates the opportunity to use this technique in exploration and modern process control. Besides the chemical composition of iron ores, their phase composition is also an important factor for exploration, quality control and processing. In the analysis of iron ore, XRD can identify the phases containing iron, such as haematite Fe2O3, magnetite Fe3O4, and goethite FeO(OH), and any other mineral phases present, especially silicas. Quantitative analysis is possible by various classical methods such as straight line or polynomial calibration with standards, but modern quantification analysis techniques such as Rietveld analysis or full pattern autoscale analysis are attractive alternatives, as they do not require any standards. These methods offer impressive accuracy and speed of analysis. Another analysis technique offering great benefit to ore exploration and process control is cluster analysis. This technique greatly simplifies the analysis of a large amount of data, eg from drill core samplings, and automatically sorts closely related scans of an experiment into separate clusters and marks the most representative scan of each cluster as well as outlying patterns. This can facilitate multi-dimensional compositional mapping of ore deposits, identifying regions of favourable mineral composition and allows fast and reliable tracking of the process. It is the most economic procedure to have automatic data evaluation without involving any dedicated personnel in the process. Details of the techniques used, sample optimisation methodologies, results, data precision and limitations will be discussed. The approaches have enormous potential as an inexpensive, reliable tool, useful in the characterisation of iron ore materials in an industrial environment.

Neste trabalho é feita uma descrição da moderna planta piloto de aglomeração a frio de finos de minérios de ferro empregando o disco pelotizador SC-1000 (Haver). Essa unidade piloto pertence ao Centro de Sustentabilidade da UFMG, que está localizado na cidade de Pedro Leopoldo (Minas Gerais, Brasil). Esse tipo de equipamento difere dos discos tradicionais no mercado por agir de forma dinâmica na formação da pelota crua durante o processo de aglomeração a frio. A tecnologia Scarabeus permite o ajuste automático da altura da borda do disco, assim como da inclinação e da velocidade de rotação, mesmo durante a etapa de operação. É também feita uma abordagem sobre a inovadora tecnologia Scarabaeus de discos pelotizadores para plantas industriais de aglomeração de minérios. Ademais, são apresentadas as principais linhas de pesquisa referentes a aglomeração a frio de materiais finos.

This paper presents the consequences of modernization and expansion of process plant by implementing SAG and Ball Mill and Carbon-in-pulp technology at the Hutti Gold Mine. From the inception of the process plant, it has undergone many changes for the improvement. In the beginning, only gravity recovery of gold was carried out by using Pebble Mills and Strake Tables. Later amalgamation, Cyanidation and Zinc precipitation and finally Carbon-in-pulp gold recovery system was implemented. Grinding plant was modernized by implementing SAG and Ball Mill and Knelson concentrator for free gold recovery as a result, the production rate, rate of recovery, reduced man power, Modernization and expansion of process plant has also yielded in safe and smooth running of the plant. Rapid development of the automotive industry and motorization has been observed in Poland over the last decade. This phenomenon has increased the amount of used car batteries requiring recycling and has thus posed new challenges for their processing. Orzel Bialy" S.A, is the major secondary lead smelter in Poland. Ibis paper describes the program for smelting technology modernisation and productivity increase through the application of oxy-fuel burners, which has been implemented at "Orzel Bialy'' S.A. The main objective of smelter modernisation, which was to increase the furnace productivity by 20%, has been achieved. This paper outlines the previous and present state of the lead acid battery scrap smelting technology at the "Orzel Bialy" S.A. Specifications of the burners and of oxygen installation are given. Industrial tests with the modernised smelting technology and optimisation of the process parameters are described, and the results obtained are discussed.

The Ilo Smelter has been continuously operating since 1960 with Reverberatory furnaces and Pierce Smith converters producing blister copper. The original installed capacity of 1.134 tons per day of concentrated was expanded in 1976. A process of modernization started in 1995 and 1998 with the installation of an El Teniente Converter, a sulfuric acid plant and an oxygen plant to reduce the gaseous emissions to the atmosphere. With the official approval of the Environmental Compliance and Management Program (Programa de Adecuaci6n y Manejo Ambiental - PAMA) in January 1997, Southern Peru Copper Corporation made a commitment to capture 91. 7% of the S02 generated at the smelter by January 2007. After an evaluation of six different technologies, the ISASMEL T process was selected because it can be easily adapted to the present operation, has a lower capital cost and it is a simple process. The fast learning curve to reach the total capacity will allow to fulfill the PAMA commitment in time. The project construction is in process and SPCC is prepared for a successful start-up and transition of the current operations at the end of year 2006. This paper outlines the factors considered by SPCC in its choice of ISASMEL T technology and describes the construction and the start-up activities of the new facilities.

Underground copper mining at Magma Copper Company's San Manuel Mine has been un going since 1955. The block caving mine has been producing copper ore at the rate of over 16 million tons per year. Depressed market conditions during the 1980's forced Magma to look at new technology. Late in 1984, Magma began testing new equipment and mining methods at the underground mine at San Manuel, Arizona. The tests resulted in a move towards mechanized production using new procedures and equipment. The goal was to increase efficiency and cut costs through mechanization.

This paper deals mainly with the modernization in the coal loading system at the loading piers of the Dominion Coal Company, Ltd., Sydney, Nova Scotia. The history of the operation is briefly outlined, and the construction of the Company's new pier is described in considerable de-tail. Particular attention is paid to the bins and conveyors, and to the loading tower. The paper concludes with a description of the S.S. Cape Breton Miner, built specifically for the coal trade, and the unloading facilities at Lakeview, Ontario. Coal Shipping at Sydney C OAL from the mines operated in Cape Breton by the Dominion Coal Company, Limited, has been shipped from the International Piers, situated on the east side of Sydney Harbour, for over sixty years. There were three piers, of which two were active-ly used in the shipping of coal until 1964. Nos. 2 and 3 were high piers about 600 feet long, of wooden construction throughout. They were founded on' rock-filled cribs and creosoted piles driven into the harbour bottom, and each had two decks which carried standard-gauge railway tracks.

The cement industry is on the horns of an economic dilemma. Within the last ten years, its over- capacity in the United States has varied from 139- 127% of demand (Fig. 1). The most direct effect of this is seen in cement prices, which reached a peak in 1960, retreated steadily through 1966 and only recently climbed back to the 1960 level again. With prices in a slump and production costs estimated to be up almost 30%, there has been a steady drain on cement profits. Since 1960, labor costs have increased 86% while fuel costs have risen 18%. Meanwhile, customer service costs have also soared owing to the competition for cement customers and the wider variety of available cement products. This search for sales advantage has in turn led to a higher Blaine number, which means more grinding and hence bigger mills, more power, and, once again, higher costs. At Bunker Hill the original charge storage and preparation system was installed in 1917 to accommodate lead-silver gravity mill products. Only minor tonnages of wet fines such as vanner and flotation concentrates were received. Charge flux and diluent requirements were provided by an ample supply of siderite middlings and coarse limerock. While oversize material was crushed through Y4-in., the use of roll crushers in series resulted in a more or less granular, free-running charge of adequate porosity. Under such conditions, receipts could be proportioned directly from receiving bins, and suitable blending was obtained by passing the resultant layered composite through a small Stedman disintegrator. This elementary system served well for production and smelting of an extremely lead-rich sinter, in the low column blast furnace. Here sinter physical quality is less critical, and appreciable quantities of raw flux and oxidized ore may be charged directly to the blast furnace without seriously impairing furnace capacity.
