Hydrostatic trunnion bearings were recently provided on large Semi-Autogenous Grinding (SAG) mills driven by wraparound motors assembled on the head to shell flanges. A conventional SAG mill would have a ring gear driven through one or two pinions. The effects of the magnetic air gap forces from this new SAG mill drive arrangement on the performance of the bearing are discussed. A step-by-step systematic analytical de-sign of the hydrostatic trunnion bearing is presented, followed by a discussion of grinding mill erection requirements to conform with the design. A brief comparison with other bearing types and their response to the effects of magnetic air gap forces are also presented.

THE casting of steel in large molds brings into play all of the undesirable effects that result inevitably from slow cooling. The origin of the molten metal, whether basic or acid open hearth or electric furnace, has little if anything to do with the phenomena involved. If the quantity of molten metal to be cast in a single mold is large enough, there is very little one can do about it-the metal will cool so slowly that 'nothing one can do, other than to provide as good feeding as practicable from an adequate reservoir of metal in the sink head, will be of any avail. Recently we have had occasion to cast a 108-in. octagon ingot weighing 545,700 lb, necessitating the combining of metal from three 100-ton open-hearth heats. This is one of the largest ingots ever made. The body of the ingot weighed 448,800 lb, which includes a bottom pool of about 7500 lb of metal, and the sink-head weight was 96,900 lb, or about 18 pct of the total weight.

The significant growth of the world population and its demand for an increasing standard of living leaves no other choice than continuously augmenting industrial production and making available steadily greater quantities of raw materials at still better qualities. Therefore, any raw material has to be utilized to the greatest possible extent and processed at optimum economy on large mechanical equipment. The layout of processing facilities of large throughput rates can be based on multiple or single lines. The latter enables the application of large machines of optimum size. Proven equipment for homogenizing, classifying, separating superfine material, sorting and dewatering are-now available in optimum sizes. By the use of these large machines operating cost of pit coal preparation plant can be significantly lowered by reducing the specific requirements regarding space, capital investment, energy, operation and maintenance.

Large scale open pit mining at Ok Tedi and Misima are described in this paper. The paper also presents the socio-political problems encountered in the construction, operation and waste disposal of high technology, high output gold and copper mines in very remote and rugged terrains. Despite these handicaps, mining companies from all over the world have established top class mining facilities including huge open pits, underground mines and mineral processing plants to extract rich mineral deposits of gold, silver and copper.Papua New Guinea is the sixth largest gold and copper producer in the world. New projects likely to come on stream before the end of this century would make it the world's third largest gold producer. The mining industry is the largest organised industry in the country employing over 10 000 persons and investing over US $1000 million on these mega projects per year.

INTRODUCTION The finding or acquisition of ore bodies containing 200,000 opt gold and greater is becoming more difficult. There are more investors and small heap leach operators who have or can raise the capital to make the investments in the large ore bodies. Echo Bay Mines' approach has been to regionally develop small ore bodies, two or three in the same geographic location, which when considered together contain over 200,000 opt gold. CONCEPT The "world class" ore body syndrome, which many large gold producing companies maintain, can restrict company growth if the finding or acquisition of these large ore bodies is not forthcoming. Another approach has been taken by Echo Bay Mines. The concept is to regionally develop two or three small ore bodies suitable for processing with portable equipment. The systematic scheduling of mining, processing with a single flexible processing plant using the same management/ operator team can reduce your overall investment. The initial selection of mining and crushing equipment suitable for sun11 open pit operations is essential. A very viable option in the mining sequence is to use contract mining/crushing/screening/agglomerating and stacking. This option also lowers your initial capital investment and increases the flexibility in mining as you move from one mining operation to another. LOCATION AND SEQUENCING One single small ore body of itself is not attractive enough for the large producer. The recovery of the initial capital investment, although very rapid, does not make a viable project. The only alternative is to find two or more small ore bodies close enough geographically to each other so that the same management/operator team can be used to run the operations as each is put into operation. Echo Bay Mines has regionally located several ore bodies ranging in recoverable ounces up to 100,000 oz. These small separate ore bodies, located within a 30-mile radius of each other, for planning purposes have been considered as one single ore body. The first small ore body has the initial burden to recover the capital invested in the office, laboratory, power plant and processing plant. Other capital investments such as water supply, access and haul road, fencing, septic system, pads and ponds are reoccurring at each mine site. The first small ore body must recover the initial capital investment in the movable structures as well as the reoccurring capital investment in the fixed structures very rapidly. A total capital recovery time of 6 to 9 months should be used as an economic decision point for both choosing which small ore body should be processed first, and what the plant design capability should be. The sequencing of the small mines is very critical. All the fixed structures mentioned above must be installed at the second mine site before the first mine has been mined out. The ideal sequencing will allow for only one month between shutdown of the first small mine and production from the second. SPECIFIC OPERATION Echo Bay Mines has completed the construction of the Illipah Mine located in White Pine County, Nevada, with this small mine sequence approach. The Illipah Mine is a 40,000 ounce recoverable gold ore body. This ore body met all the necessary requirements. The theoretical requirements for the flotation d large particles are discussed. A flotation machine is described which has components which meet many of the theoretical requirements for the flotation of large particles. The machine's salient features include multiple fine-bubble attachment, froth level feeding, quiescence, shallow depth, and short flotation time. Test conditions and results are presented for the laboratory flotation of 10 mesh phosphate, 4 mesh potash, and 1/2 inch coal. In addition, test conditions and results of pilot plant flotation of minus 14 plus 35 mesh phosphate and minus 14 plus 150 mesh phosphate are also presented.

The current technology of large rock conveyors is reviewed. Based on this investigation two large rock conveyor concepts have been developed and a test facility investigation designed and fabricated. The USBM will test these concepts along with loading and transfer points for handling mine run rock material up to 1.5 m (4.9 ft) in size. An evaluation of open pit mining systems using large rock conveyors documents substantial cost savings when compared to truck haulage.

A process for large scale chromatographic separations using a continuous chromatography technique is described. The process combines the advantages of large scale batch fixed column displacement chromatography with conventional analytical or elution continuous annular chromatography (CAC) to enable large scale displacement chromatography to be performed on a continuous basis (CDC). Such large scale, continuous displacement chromatography separations have not been reported in the literature. The process is demonstrated with the ion exchange separation of a binary lanthanide (Nd/Pr) mixture. The process is, however, applicable to any displacement chromatography separation that can be performed using conventional batch, fixed column chromatography.

A description will be given of an approach to plant process automation based on the strategy of first developing an information system followed by later development of process models. The advantages of this approach over the unit process control will be outlined. Some insight will be given into the risks associated with this method. These risks can be shown to be primarily economic.' Some reference will be made to two Cominco installations in the interests of illustrating the generality of the information systems approach.

Associated Tin Smelters, Sydney, are developing tin smelting operations in a prototype commercial SIROSMELT plant comprising two furnaces of 5 to 8 tonnes capacity. Features of the plant and its operation are discussed and results of its application to tin slag reduction and high-grade tin concentrate smelting are presented. Development work is still in progress but experience indicates that the technology has potential for lowering the costs of tin smelting and relieving constraints on grade and iron content of concentrate imposed by conventional technology.

With the increase in population over the last decade, and anticipated population growth over the coming years, Norway is making significant investments in the Country’s infrastructure. Part of this investment in development starts with the Intercity development project in South-East Norway, which is the largest transport project in Norway. The Intercity Development project consists of 270 km (167 mi.) of new doubletrack rail, capable of train speeds reaching 250 km/h (155 mph). The new stations are centrally located in the major cities, in South-East Norway, to provide the benefit to as many citizens as possible. The goal of the project is to reduce the increase in traffic, which is coupled with an increase in population, and reduce the travel times between the cities. The Intercity Development Project has an anticipated completion date of 2034. The Sandbukta-Moss-Såstad (SMS) project, part of the Intercity development, includes 10 km (6.2 mi) of new double-track railway and is situated on the Østfold Line, near the city of Moss, Norway shown in Fig. 1. The 10 km SMS-section covers three open stretches and two tunnels, including 630 m (2,066 ft) substructure for double-track railways on the open line at Sandbukta. The Moss tunnel is a 1720 m (5,643 ft) long tunnel from Sandbukta to Moss center, including a 420 m (1,378 ft) long concrete culvert. The new Moss station includes an 800 m (2,625 ft) long station area. The Carlberg tunnel is a 2350 m (7,710 ft) long tunnel from Kleberget to Carlberg, including a 200 m (656 ft) long concrete culvert.

Severe dynamic multiple seam interactions can occur when active mine workings are subsided by underlying mining activity. The most dramatic events are usually caused by longwall mining or pillar recovery beneath open, overlying entries. But pillars in abandoned workings can also fail and cause subsidence and damage an overlying mine. This paper describes a case history in which an apparent ?pillar squeeze? in the abandoned workings of a lower seam was initiated during retreat mining in an upper seam. The event subsequently extended more than 1,500 ft and ultimately closed the upper seam mine. Analysis indicated that the pillars in the lower mine were adequately sized for the lower seam mining and were not affected by the initial development above them. When retreat mining in the upper seam had progressed several hundred feet, however, the pillars located directly beneath the pillar line were overloaded, and an extensive squeeze initiated in the underlying workings. The squeeze, in turn, subsided the overlying workings, causing widespread rib falls and roof instability. Previous examples of dynamic multiple seam interactions resulting from delayed subsidence of underlying workings have been reported in the literature. This is, apparently, the first recorded incident in which pillar recovery in an active mine triggered pillar failure in an underlying mine, which then triggered a dynamic interaction that impacted the active overlying seam.

The Process Technology Center of Phelps Dodge Mining Company (PDMC) .operates several test facilities in support of PDMC's hydrometallurgical operations. Installations for small leach columns, 15 cm. to 60 cm. (6 in. to 24 in.) in diameter, and large leach columns, 1.8 m. (6 ft.) in diameter, are complemented by a test facility for SX/EW operations. The history of and reasons for the development of these facilities: are described and original standard equipment is discussed. A primary goal in constructing these facilities was achieving a high degree of flexibility to allow for testing of new equipment and new leaching and SX/EW technologies as they are developed. Along with this challenge, construction of a filly integrated SX/EW test facility on a small scale brought its own set of challenges.

Tuttle Creek Dam was constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the 1950?s on the Big Blue River in north-east Kansas. Since the dam is located in a seismic area, the safety of the dam was re-evaluated under the national U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Dam Safety and Assurance Program. After a series of studies and analyses performed by the Kansas City District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in 2003 the Department of the Army authorized the implementation of the plan ?Stabilize Foundation Soil without Drawdown Alternative?, during a 7-10 year construction period. As part of this plan, in 2006 Treviicos South carried out a large scale jet grouting and deep mixing test program downstream the dam. The test program included the installation of twenty-seven double and triple-fluid jet grout columns and twenty-seven jet-assisted deep mix columns. The jet grout columns were constructed at different levels of specific energy and cement content. The deep mix columns ranged in diameter between 3 ft and 6 ft. During column placement, the drilling and grouting parameters, pore pressures, and soil movements were instrumented in real-time. The downstream test area was enclosed by a cement-bentonite wall extended to bedrock, which allowed a 35-ft deep open excavation around the 45-ft deep columns. The exposed jet grout columns measured up to 15 ft in diameter, exceeding the anticipated target diameter. In addition to coring, some of the jet grout and soil mix test columns were saw-cut along the group axis, providing useful information on the internal column structure.

Full-Scale cyclic field testing was performed on a 3x3 pile group consisting of nine cast-in-drilled-hole (CIDH) reinforced concrete shafts and a comparable single-shaft in order to investigate group interaction effects. Both specimens were constructed with pile diameters of d = 0.61m (2 ft), fixed head boundary conditions, and placed in stiff clayey soil at a test site near the LAX Airport in Southern California. Internal instrumentation was installed in the single pile as well as in three piles within the pile group to obtain pile curvatures. External instrumentation controlled the lateral displacement of the specimens. A combination of experimentally and analytically obtained p-y curves for the single pile was used to simulate results for piles located in the group when field data were not available. All test specimens were tested to structural failure and excavated after test completion to investigate pile damage and plastic hinge formations. Calculated group interaction factors ranged between 1.0 at very small displacement levels of <2.5 mm (0.1 in), 0.8 at the initiation of the pile-soil-pile interaction, i.e. between 4 mm - 15 mm (0.16-0.6 in), and increased towards 0.9 near structural failure (displacement >25 mm or 1 in). A literature set of p-multipliers was found to reproduce an accurate fit to the available load displacement test data from the group.

Velocity of Detonation (VOD) is the most commonly used method to determine explosive performance as VOD is a function of the confinement (ground conditions) density and composition of the explosive. Techniques used to measure VOD include resistance wire, time domain reflectometry, simple start stop and fibre optic methods. All these approaches require a cable of some sort to be inserted into each blast hole being monitored and the holes to be fired in a specific sequence. It is time consuming and fairly technical to position the cables correctly to gather the data from each hole. It slows down the hole loading process and increases the number of people on a bench at that time. The equipment and cable limits the measurements to a few holes, typically 5 or less, that are in close proximity. These measurements can generate useful information about the monitored holes but does not provide a full picture of how the explosive is performing across the whole blast and whether any change in performance is noted with changing ground conditions or confinement.

The Gold Quarry Mine is a large scale open pit mine located 11.3 km (7 miles) north of Carlin, Nevada. The operation consists of an open pit mine, two milling facilities, a leach crushing plant, and three dump leach pads. Gold Quarry is operated by Newmont Gold Company, which is 90.1% owned by Newmont Mining Corporation, a Denver based company. The property is the largest of the three gold producing properties operated by Newmont Gold Company on the famous Carlin Trend. This paper will give a general overview of the Gold Quarry mining facilities and detail mine operating practices. Specifics on cost saving ideas being implemented and those under investigation will be discussed.
