This article describes and evaluates the establishment of Kuyasa Mining including the search for a suitable deposit, the ongoing lack of finance, and market constraints. Despite the dramatic initial growth and success of their Ikhwezi Colliery near Delmas, Mpumalanga, Kuyasa?s experiences offer some sobering arguments for significant changes to mineral rights ownership, the attitude of financial institutions and government policy if South Africa is to have a dynamic and successful junior and small-scale mining sector.

The Kwinana Nickel Refinery began operations in 1970 processing sulphide concentrates from Kambalda using the Sherritt Gordon pressure leach and hydrogen reduction process to produce nickel metal as powder and briquette. Over the years a number of changes have seen the refinery capacity increased from the original design capacity of 15 000 tpa nickel on an all concentrate feed to its current design capacity of 42 000 tpa nickel on an all matte feed. This paper outlines the changes in plant equipment and process for the most recent refinery expansion from 35 000 tpa to 42 000 tpa which have been implemented since 1992.

The KX36 kimberlite was discovered using a high-resolution gradient aeromagnetic survey, with follow-up detailed ground geophysics and deflation soil sampling used to assess and prioritize the geophysical anomalies identified from the initial aeromagnetic survey. Prospect drilling intersected kimberlite in the first hole drilled on the KX36 anomaly. Preliminary evaluation has shown that KX36 is diamondiferous, and a more detailed evaluation and sampling programme is currently underway. The area around KX36 has been prospected by numerous companies over the last few decades, with sporadic kimberlite indicator mineral (KIM) recoveries in regional deflation sampling indicating the possible presence of kimberlites, but without sufficient resolution to ?home in? on specific targets. Previous (lower resolution) aeromagnetic surveys and soil sampling campaigns also did not define anomalies with sufficient detail to guide prospect drilling effectively. The discovery of KX36 highlights the prospectivity of areas of Botswana under deep Kalahari cover that have been explored previously. The kyanite minerals, including kyanite, silimanite, and andalusite, are anhydrous aluminum silicates with the formula Al2O3SiO2. lumortierite and topaz are also included in this group because they are closely allied in composition and thermal behavior. However, leither are mined commercially today. They ire typical metamorphic minerals which are found in metamorphic rocks on every continent. Kyanite minerals are prized chiefly for their refractoriness and are important components in a broad range of acid refractory products, especially in mortars and castables. World production of kyanite minerals is currently about 250,000 tpy and has been increasing at the rate of 3 to 8% a year for many {ears (Anon, 1972). While kyanite minerals lave widespread occurrence, the consumption of kyanite minerals is concentrated in the relatively few highly industrialized areas where refractories are manufactured, and which in turn are typically close to the major iron and steel producing regions of the world. Thus northern Europe, England, the United States, and Japan are the principal consumers of refractories and kyanite minerals. Of these countries only the U.S. is a significant producer. The largest use for domestic kyanite, both raw and calcined, is in the manufacture of refractory mortars, cements, castables, and plastic ramming mixes. In these applications kyanite constitutes from 10 to 40% of the mixture, the balance being refractory clays and coarser grog materials. A certain proportion of raw kyanite is used to offset the shrinking of the clay binder, whereas the calcined kyanite is used in the coarser sizes for body. Certain high grade refractory shapes and kiln furniture are composed chiefly of graded sizes of calcined kyanite bonded with a little ball clay. In most applications, however, kyanite is used only to fortify the mix or as a minor ingredient. Some manufacturers of mullite brick use domestic calcined kyanite for the fine-grained portion of the brick, but seldom in quantities exceeding 10% by weight. Kyanite is used by ceramic manufacturers of wall tile and sanitary ware to offset shrinkage and cracking after firing. Indian kyanite has traditionally been used to make the coarse grog sizes needed for the manufacture of mullite brick, and for the grog portions of mortar, cement, and castable mixes. It has been largely replaced, however, by synthetic mullite, high fired flint, and diaspore clay or calcined bauxite for other applications. Indian kyanite is available in lump as well as in granules and concentrates, as are sillimanite materials from India and South Africa. Andalusite is available as 8 mesh granules and as fines with chemical analyses not unlike those of domestic kyanites. From time to time and from place to place minor amounts of other aluminum silicate minerals such as dumortier- ite, topaz, and pyrophyllite have been made available at various prices and specifications, but have not been significant factors in the refractory industry. Keywords: Kyoto Protocol, carbon credits, global warming, energy, auditing Climate change is nowadays being taken increasingly seriously, and the link between global warming and the carbon dioxide released in the generation of energy is coming under increasing scrutiny. The Kyoto Protocol was signed in 1997, after five years of negotiation. So far, about 84 countries have ratified this agreement, under which terms developed countries have strict targets linked to their 1990 level of emissions. However, ?greenhouse gas? (such as carbon dioxide) emissions continue to rise alarmingly. According to the World Resources Institute, greenhouse gas emissions in the USA increased 13% from 1990-2002, while Australia recorded a 22% increase. In contrast, the European Union, a Kyoto signatory, has seen a small decline in its emissions during the same period. This is led by the UK and Germany, who reduced their emissions by 15% and 19% respectively. The concept of ?carbon credits? provides a funding mechanism for companies in the developed world to compensate for some of their CO2 emissions by paying companies (trading credits) elsewhere in the world to undertake projects to bring about reductions in emissions. In the southern African mining industry, it will be possible to get refunded for undertaking voluntary emission-reduction projects. Concern about the environment is creating business opportunities. A preliminary calculation has shown that various projects in South Africa (those in the pipeline, with quite a high likelihood of coming off) could earn a combined total of about R2.5-billion, under the initial phase of the Kyoto Protocol's carbon-credit scheme, which allows developed-country companies to trade credits with developing countries. A number of local companies are planning projects that could comply with the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), in which they will implement techniques to achieve certified emission reductions (CERs) of greenhouse gases. In order to prevent abuse of such a system involving vast sums of money, vigorous audits need to be carried out. A company has to prove it has made real changes and is not simply conducting business as usual under a cloak of claimed environmental improvements. PricewaterhouseCoopers has applied to become one of only a few international agencies that will be accredited to conduct validation and verification of the credits, by auditing what is called the ?designated operational entity?. An independent validator needs to confirm that the project meets the strict requirements of the Kyoto Protocol. The company has to demonstrate that it?s not business as usual. So, if you refurbished every five years, the next refurbishment is not a good CDM project, unless you can demonstrate that you will do something beyond the maintenance - that is what can be registered. So, Kyoto intends to get additional projects going, and the money for that is actually quite good - prices of 14 euros per ton of carbon dioxide not emitted have been seen. The price depends on who takes the risk for non-delivery if a project doesn?t deliver the emission reductions on time. The highly energy-intensive South African mining industry is heavily dependent on coal. There should be many opportunities for the pyrometallurgical industry to come up with creative ideas to reduce emissions, and there is now an additional financial incentive to encourage this. Companies can actually get money in return for doing these types of projects, in addition to the contribution to corporate social responsibility.

In no Confederation of Independent States (CIS) country does the mining sector play quite so commanding a role as in the mountainous Central Asian republic of Kyrgyzstan. Its president, Askar Akayev, says he would like to develop his country into "a Central Asian Switzerland." However, in Switzerland, the gold is largely under the street along Zurich's renowned Bahnhofstrasse. In Kyrgyzstan, though, the gold is still in the mountains. Accordingly, Kyrgyzstan's recent adoption of a comprehensive new mining law has attracted widespread attention. Akayev recently completed a tour of the United States. His visit drew large crowds from the business community at events staged in New York and Washington, DC. The success can be attributed as much to the attractiveness of Kyrgyzstan's min¬ing sector as to the personal charms of the nation's president. Led by a half-billion-dollar investment by Canada's uranium giant Cameco, the mining sector is leading Kyrgyzstan's economic revival. And Bishkek is beginning to show some of the same signs of a "boom town" that already mark its Kazak neighbor, Almaty. Mercedes and BMWs already outnumber the Volgas on Bishkek's major traffic arteries. After nearly two years of debates involving government advisors and a final round of deliberation in Parliament, Kyrgyzstan finally adopted its second mining law. This followed quickly in the wake of measures enacted in neighboring Kazakstan and proposed in Russia. Kyrgyzstan's new law replaces the 1992 law "On Mineral Resources." It was one of the first enactments of an independent Kyrgyzstan. The 1992 law made a major contribution to the introduction of free-market economics in the country by ending the state monopoly over mineral exploration and development. It also laid the groundwork for an independent mining industry. According to Kyrgyz government reports, Kyrgyzstan has about 270 commercially viable deposits of almost 40 types of mineral resources. These include oil, gas, coal, precious-, nonferrous-, ferrous-, rare- and basemetals. However, the nation's key draw is gold. Since enactment of the first law, the government has issued more than 100 licenses for geological prospecting for and development of established deposits of gold.

Landsvirkjun—the national electric power company of Iceland—is building the Kárahnjúkar Hydroelectric Project in eastern Iceland. Two glacial river systems will be dammed and channeled through a series of tunnels into a 690 MW underground powerhouse. The Project has a total of 73 km of tunnels to be excavated of which mosthave been completed. From three access adits, three large diameter (7.2 m to 7.6 m),main-beam, gripper-type, Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) are being used to complete50-km of the waterway tunnel. Using the TBMs was a first in Iceland to excavate the complex Icelandic basalt formations, which consist of inclined layers of hard basaltic flows with weaker scoriaceous and sedimentary interbeds. Faults, fissures and dykes that frequently cross the lava flows posed both geologic and hydrogeologic difficulties to the TBM tunneling. This paper describes the extreme challenges that the men and equipment had to endure to complete the tunneling, including the harsh winter weather on the surface and the cold, abundant ground water inflows within the tunnels.

Pour les travaux plus compliqués ils utilisaient les services de machinistes qui eux savaient comment réparer Ie moteur à vapeur et couler des coussinets de ""babbit"". Les premières pelles diesel étaient entretenues de la même façon mais pour les réparations au moteur, on devait recourir au représentant du manufacturier qui était Ie seul à avoir les compétences nécessaires.Ce n'est vraiment qu ‘après la deuxième guerre mondiale que I ‘usage de l'équipement mobile s'est répandu dans les mines à ciel ouvert pour débuter les extractions selon les méthodes que I'on connaît aujourd'hui.L'entretien de l'équipement minier de façon organisée à débute avec I ‘usage de ces machines dans nos mines. Ces machines étaient un peu primitives, petites et pas très dispendieuses a I'achat. Même si la disponibilité était basse, elles fournissaient quand même un rendement qui en ces temps était acceptable. L’organisation de I ‘entretien de cet équipèrent était assez primitif et n'occupait qu'une place secondaire aux yeux de la direction de la mine."

L'objectif de l'opération minière est d'exploiter à ciel ouvert le gisement d'hématite spéculaire de Fire Lake et de produire au concentrateur de Lac-Jeannine, près de la ville de Gagnon, 6 million de tonnes de concentré pour alimenter l'usine de bouletage de Port Cartier.Le présent exposé a pour but de fa ire ressortier les caractéristiques d'une opération dont la mine est située à plus de 100 km du concentrateur, d'en faire ressortir les particularités touchant le transport du personnel et du minerai. En plus, on traitera de l'importance dans une telle situation d'une organisation efficace dans la gestion des services et de l'opération (atelier, concasseur, entrepôt, etc.).IntroductionSidbec-Normines Inc . a entrepris l'exploitation minière du gisement de Fire Lake, le 1er janvier 1977. Le but de l'entreprise est de produire annuellement six millions (6 000 000) de tonnes de concentré d'hématite (oxide de fer) titrant 66% Fe au concentrateur de Lac-Jeannine a partir d'un minerai d'une teneur moyenne de 33% Fe, extrait de la mine de Fire Lake. Ce concentré est ensuite achemine à Port-Cartier et alimente I'usine de bouletage.Les installations minières de Sidbec-Normines sont situées a trois endroits différents : la mine à Fire Lake, le concentrateur à Lac-Jeannine et l'usine de bouletage à Port-Cartier. La mine de Fire Lake se situe à 83 km de la ville de Gagnon et à 100 km du concentrateur de Lac-Jeannine. Une route provinciale relie la ville à la mine et au concentrateur. Le minerai est acheminé de la mine au concentrateur par chemin de fer et le concentré est transporté par train sur une distance de 309 km à l'usine de bouletage de Port-Cartier."

"Depuis la fin des annees 1800, la province de Grenville represente pour Ie Quebec une source importante et diversifiée de minéraux industriels. Le Ministère de l'Énergie et des Ressources du Québec, dans Ie cadre de I'entente auxiliaire Canada-Québec, et les compagnies minieres y ant multiplié, surtout depuis 1983, leurs travaux d 'exploration, de cartographie, et d'évaluation pour les minéraux industriels. Ces travaux ant conduit ala découverte et ala mise en valeur de gisements de granite architectural, de graphite, de dolomite et ant aussi permis de repertorier des gîtes et des indices prometteurs de wollastonite, de silice, de calcite. de dolomite, de silicates d'alumine et de terres rares. Les gisements récemment découverts sont actuellement exploités au sur Ie point de l'être et les gîtes et les indices les plus prometteurs ant été jalonnés.ABSTRACTSince the late 18oos, the Grenville Province in Québec has been an important and diversified source of industrial minerals. The Ministere de l'Énergie et des Ressources du Québec, under the Canada-Quebec Mineral Development Agreement, and the private sector have put an emphasis on exploration, mapping and evaluation programs in the Grenville Province for minerals, particularly since 1983. These programs have led to the discovery and the development of deposits such as architectural granite, graphite and dolomite, and have also led to inventories of occurrences and prospects of wollastonite, silica, calcite, dolomite, alumina silicates and rare earths. The deposits discovered lately are presently being quarried or will be in the near future. The most promising occurrences and prospects have been claimed."

Crystalline igneous rocks, known commercially as granite, are exploited in Quebec f rom more than twenty-five quarries for building, ornamental and monumental purpose$. Quebec is the main Canadian producer of construction granite, accounting for nearly 90 per cent of total production. Jn the last three years, this industry has experienced an important growth due to improved marketing and use of modern equipment in rock-cutting and polishing. Jn /983 a 35 per cent sales increase is forecast. The main rock varieties extracted are the following: porphyritic pinkish grey granite and green charnockite from Riviere-dPierre, mahogany brown granite and black anorthositic rock f rom the Lac Saint-Jean area, fine-grained pink granite from Guenette, coarse-grained brown quartz monzonitefrom SaintA lexis-des-Monts. All these rock types occur in the Grenville tectonic province whereas a medium-grained, light grey granite, Devonian in age, is extensively being quarried in the southern part of the Appalachians. In the Superior province a greenish black diabase and a deep red granite are extracted. Search for new varieties and deposits is actively being carried out by prospectors and by the minis/ere de /'Energie et des Ressources du Quebec following growing demand for granitic and gabbroic rocks as dimension stone.

Five phases of ice movement were r es pons ible f or glacial dispersion in t he study area. I ce fl ow directi on changed prog r es s ively from SE to SSW and then to the S. All observed glacial sed iments are associated with a south-southwest to south movement; t hey are grouped, on the basis of their texture, structure, morphology and composition, into four distinct lithofacies. A lithological study of the coarse-grained fraction (4-128 mm) of these lithofacies shows systematic compositional differences. These are: 1) variations in the proportions of local bed rock fragments; 2) variations in the horizontal displacement of the maximum abundance peak of a given lithology relative to its source area, and 3) variations in the length of dispersion trains associated with each lithofacies. Although dispersal trains can obviously be mapped without differentiating li thofacies, studies based on the consideration of lithofacies should give more reliable results than conventional methods.
