Q: This is December 1960 and Jafet Lindeberg and myself are sitting around the tape recorder. Jafet, who discovered the gold in Nome, Alaska, in 1898, is going to tell the story of the discovery and of his life up there-a period of some 25 years. Now. Jafet, let's start this off well back of that-start it of1 when you were in Norway and, briefly, tell about when you were born and where you were born, anti so on. Lindeberg: My home in Norway was Varanger in Northern Norway. I was born and raised there and our industry was lumbering, cutting cordwood out of birch, sawing lumber with water power, fishing and dairy work. Q: Did you have anything to do with reindeer? Lindeberg: I never had anything to do with reindeer. But reindeer were raised in the nearby county, called Kautokeino, and they used to come to the coast in the summer, but we had nothing to do with the industry.

"The Jaguar project is relatively unique in that it was evaluated, financed, built and operated to completion within the last ten years, providing the opportunity to holistically review and reconcile expectations against the actual outcomes. It is a case study that allows wider conclusions to be drawn with respect to the risks and opportunities involved with project evaluation and execution.Jaguar is located in the Leonora Mining District of Western Australia and was commissioned in mid-2007 as an underground accessed, single high-grade volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) deposit with an on-site concentrator, producing copper and zinc concentrates exported via the Port of Geraldton to South-East Asian markets.The feasibility study (FS) had several iterations (JML, 2005a); the last dated July 2005 was specifically targeted to secure project funding, and summarised the reserves-only portion of the resource and its planned exploitation. The commissioning of the mine was the transition for the owner Jabiru Metals NL from junior explorer to producer and the project was the dominant asset of the company.Jaguar operated through several significant deviations from the linear project plan set out in the FS, including the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), a corporate takeover and disruption to the mine plan from the onset of material geotechnical issues. Whilst the GFC or mining disruption were not specifically predicted in the FS or peer reviews, the generic effects of the events were assessed in the project risk assessment and they influenced subsequent management decisions. In parallel to the internal project-specific risks, the short planned life of Jaguar was a risk to the continuation of the corporate entity which was being addressed by significant investment into brownfields exploration to extend or replicate the project, and ultimately added value such that attracted a corporate takeover.Holistically, the project delivered the returns predicted in the FS, but in a much different guise than was expected. This paper will describe the reality of operations compared with the study predictions and expectations through the perspective of the project and corporate risk assessment.CITATION:Jacobs, R, 2016. This paper looks at the design of the Bentayga raisebore with subsequent back analysis using a LiDAR survey. A search for LiDAR raisebore assessment publications shows little work has been done on this subject. The paper examines the empirical design and RS2 modelling assessment with the bored condition. The high resolution of the LiDAR enabled mapping of weak structures that were located on the geotechnical investigation hole the orientations of which could not be determined. In addition, the scan showed were water ingress was occurring, potential stress overbreak and structural controls on stability. The LiDAR results were able to confirm no additional support work such as a shotcrete liner is necessary. The LiDAR results have been analysed in one metre increments as volume of overbreak against the empirical stability criteria (McCracken & Stacey 1989). The future use of LiDAR mapping over a range of rock mass conditions will provide quantification of the established empirical assessment improving its reliability. It is also a useful and accurate tool to monitor long term stability of a raisebore due to stress change or ore pass due to wear.

Jaguar Mining Inc. is implementing a 1.1 Mtpy, 7-year LOM gold project in the Iron Quadrangle (?Quadrilátero Ferrífero?), Brazil. Construction is on schedule and startup is programmed for Q2 2010. Mill feed grade averages 4.43 g/t and LOM gold production is estimated at 800,000 oz. The project entails two sulfide underground mines and three oxide/transition open pit mines. A state-of-the-art flotation/gravity concentration/CIP Plant has been designed based on testwork carried out by internationally recognized Canadian, U.S., and Brazilian laboratories. The mass recovery of the flotation section is only ca 10%, while its gold recovery is about 90%. Therefore, the CIP-ADR Plant will treat only 10% of the solids mass contained in the mill feed, while 90% will be fully cyanide-free material that will be partially used to feed a Backfill Plant. The leached tailings will be conveyed to a rather small tailings dam, whose 20- m3/h supernatant solution will be treated by a new electrolytic technology. The plant design contemplates a High Density Thickener for the cyanide-free rejects exceeding the backfill demand and a Regrinding Section before the Leaching Circuit. The estimated overall metallurgical recovery sits around 92%. This paper focus on the use of modern technologies to reduce costs, risks, and liabilities.

First evidence of bauxite in Jamaica resulted from an analysis of a soil sample collected at Bull Savannah in 1938 during a systematic local investigation of the island's soil types. Results of subsequent work indicated the possibility of the occurrence of deposits of commercial grade and dimensions, and in 1942, with a view to emergency development of the deposits as a war measure, the Jamaican Government declared all bauxite in the colony to be Crown property.

INDICATIVE of the practical importance of the achievement of James Aston , recipient of the Robert W. Hunt Medal for 1930, is the following prosaic item from the financial columns of a recent issue of a New York newspaper. "According to private advices from Pittsburgh, production costs of the A. M. Byers Co. for 1929 were reduced about $5 a ton by the use of the Aston process for making wrought iron pipe. A greater saving is anticipated for 1930, when more of the company?s requirements will be produced by the new method."

THE CONNECTING link between Phelps Dodge and the copper mines at Bisbee and Morenci was a Canadian-born mining engineer and metallurgist named James Douglas. Judged by almost any standard, Douglas was an extraordinary man. Like John Muir of the California red- woods, he had in his blood "the heather and bog juices of Scotland," and the rugged virtues of a singularly great race. His father, for whom he was named, was a graduate of Edinburgh University, a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in London, and a man of rash and adventurous spirit. Extremely catholic in his intellectual interests and attainments, he was unusually skilled in his profession, certain-sometimes to the point of disastrous stubbornness--of his own judgments and decisions, careless of life or fortune where duty or moral issues were involved, and always deeply moved by the sufferings and misfortunes of his fellow men. SELWYN G. BLAYLOCK, who has been awarded the Douglas medal for 1927 for his achievements in the production of electrolytic zinc and the treating of complex lead, zinc and silver ore at the Sullivan mine, British Columbia, is a Canadian and one of the notable men who have come from McGill Uni-versity, where he graduated in 1899. As the medal was founded in 1922 by a group of James Douglas' friends to honor the memory of that distinguished Canadian metallurgist, who was an honorary LL.D. of McGill, it is extremely appropriate that it should be awarded to another Canadian metallurgist and McGill graduate, who has been notably successful in practice. Immediately after gradua- tion Mr. Blaylock obtained a position as chemist at the Trail smelter and two years later was made chief chemist and metallurgist. In 1907 he became superintendent of the Hall mines smelter and after a year became superintendent of the St. Eugene mine at Moyie. While there he was responsible for the purchase of the Sullivan mine and the use of methods of mining, especially sorting, which so improved the relative per- - centages of zinc and lead in the ore as to make it better material for blast-furnace smelting. The losses in zinc, both from sorting out and in the lead blast-furnace slag made a deep impression on him, and various methods of water concentration and the use of air-jigs and flotation to increase the recovery were tried under Mr. Blaylock's supervision as early as 1910. These were followed by experiments with direct fusion, volatilization in kilns, sulfite processes, and one similar to the Ashcroft proc-ess. In 1914 experiments were made with roasting, leaching, and electrolyzing the resultant zinc sulfate solution; the following year a plant was built at Tadanac which has been in successful operation since 1916, its capacity having been increased by successive steps to 275 tons of zinc per day. Experimental work continued on the feed for the zinc plant and a 150-ton mill to use the Horwood process was constructed, but as the results were not encouraging it was altered to wet magnetic concentration, which was successful and the plant was later increased in capacity to 600 tons per day. Meanwhile experiments with differential flota-tion showed promise and magnetic concentration was continued while flotation was developed to where it could be put into operation parallel to the magnetic plant. This flotation plant, started in 1920, was so successful that eventually the magnetic separation plant was abandoned. Lead smelting conditions at Trail were difficult on account of the necessity of mak-ing slags containing as much as 20 per cent zinc and because of the high percentage of fine flotation con-centrate. The improvements in sintering and smelt-ing made under Mr. Blaylock's direction have been notable. The Betts electrolytic refining process for lead was first used at Trail, and the plant has been brought to its present highly developed and efficient state under Mr. Blaylock's direction. The first com-mercial Cottrell plant in connection with lead smelt-ing was also built there. The capacity of the Tada-nac plant is now approximately 750 tons per day of refined metal, including lead, zinc, copper, antimony, cad- mium, gold and silver. All the work necessary for this nota- ble development has neces- sarily been the work of many hands, directed by Mr. Blay- lock. In 1924 he was awarded the McCharles Medal by the University of Toronto for his achievements in con- nection with the production of electrolytic zinc and the solving of the difficulty of treating the complex lead- zinc-silver ore of the Sullivan mine, and developing it from a small producer to one of the most important mines of the world, now producing 150,000 tons of lead and 90,000 tons of zinc annually. Having spent all his professional life in one remote place, Mr. Blaylock is relatively little known per-sonally to others of his pro-fession, and the award indi-cates the truth in Emerson's well known epigram about the mouse-trap.

ZAY JEFFRIES, who has been awarded the Douglas medal, established in 1922 by a group of the friends of the late James Douglas for distin-guished achievement in non-ferrous metallurgy, is one of the most notable graduates of the South Dakota School of Mines where he took his B. S. degree in 1910. The following year he was manager of the Ideal Mining Co., at Custer, and in 1911 he became instructor in metallurgy at the Case School of Applied Science, Cleve-land, where he remained until 1917, and in 1918 he took his D. Sc. degree at Harvard. During all this period he was engaged in experi-mental and consulting work for the Electric Railway Improvement Co., t h e Cleveland Steel Tool Co., the W. S. Tyler Co., the Lincoln Electric Co., the Aluminum Castings Co., and the Cleveland wire di-vision of the General Elec-tric Co. He is now en-gaged in general consulting work, especially for the Aluminum Co. of America, the General Electric Co., and the National Tube Co. He has contributed to the Transactions papers on the determination of grain size in metals (with A. H. Kline and E. B. Zimmer) LIV, 594; grain growth phenomena in metals, LVI, 571; the tungsten-molyb-denum equilibrium diagram and system of crystalliza-tion, LVI, 600; grain size inheritance in iron and carbon steel, LVIII, - 669; effect of temperature, de-formation and grain size on the mechanical properties of metals, LX, 474; metallography of tungsten, LX, 588; physical changes in iron and steel below the thermal critical range, LXIII, and LXVII, 56; and the trend in the science of metals, LXX, 303. In addition to participating freely in the discussion of other papers before the Institute he has found time to contribute notable papers to the Institute of Metals (Great Brit-ain), the principal technical journals, and to write a book on "The Science of Metals" in collaboration with R. S. Archer.

Carlisle: Jim Knapp, has been the good friend of hundreds-maybe thousands-of mining men in these western states in the last 40 or 50 years. Jim is going to talk about many of the mining camps of Nevada, where he has done plenty in the mining field during the last 50 years. Jim, for a starter, how did you happen to go to Nevada? Knapp: In the summer of 1902, two years after the discovery at Tonopah, the professor of mining at Stanford sent out myself and another student by the name of Joe Miller to make a report on the camp. We left San Francisco at 8 p.m., got to Reno the next morning, then took the train to Sodaville, arriving about 4:30 in the afternoon. The first man I met when I arrived at the Tonopah station was Tasker Oddie, a gentleman who later became the Govenor of the State and then a United States Senator. Before we got away from the stage station I also met S. H. Brady, the first mining engineer to put out his shingle in Tonopah. He afterwards became general manager of the West End Mining Co.

At the meeting of the Board of Directors of this Institute on Feb. 16, 1915, the 14 members of the Board present unanimously elected Professor Kemp an Honorary Member. The nomination of Professor Kemp was signed by 21 members of the Institute, none of whom are members of the Board of Directors, and recited his qualifications for Honorary Membership in the following terms: Professor Kemp graduated from Amherst College in the class of 1881, and from the School of Mines, Columbia University, in the class of 1884. After serving as instructor in geology in Cornell University for a few years he was called back to Columbia as adjunct professor in 1891, was made full professor the following year, and has since filled that office with dignity and honor. Among the first to recognize they importance of igneous rocks in the formation of orebodies, his studies have contributed greatly to that increase of knowledge of economic geology in which the Transactions of the Institute has had an influential part, and he is recognized both abroad and in this country as one of the most distinguished scholars in geology which America has produced. This recognition is evident in the honorary degrees of Sc. D. conferred on him by Amherst College in 1906, and LL. D. conferred by McGill University in 1913, as well as by election to membership in the National Academy of Sciences, and a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of. Christiania, and the Geological Society of. Stockholm. Professor Kemp was a Manager of the American Institute of Mining Engineers from 1896 to 1898, Vice-President from 1903 to 1904, a Director from 1905 to 1912, President and President of the Board of Directors in 1912, and Past President since that time. During these years he has labored loyally for the upbuilding of the Institute, serving on many committees, as well as in the offices enumerated. He has also served as President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the New York Academy of Sciences, and on the governing board of the Geological Society of America and the New York Botanical Gardens. His service is not confined, however, to these labors for the good of the profession and his contributions to exact knowledge of geology. In his almost 25 years as a professor in Columbia University there have come under his influence a great group of young men in whom he has inspired unflagging zeal in the search for truth, and to whom he has set an example of unselfish service. The value of such a service cannot be overestimated and in electing him to Honorary Membership the Institute would officially recognize the measure of appreciation which his professional colleagues have long accorded to him.

How did you get into mining; were you from a mining town or mining family? Not at all. I grew up in northwest Kansas. I liked to hunt and fish, so I thought it would be fun to work for a company that made knives or guns. It seemed like metallurgical engineers would be something those companies could use, so I started in physical metallurgy. I got a summer job at the great Climax molybdenum mine near Leadville, CO shoveling muck onto conveyors. I was hooked. I loved everything about mining, so in the fall, I changed majors from physical metallurgy to mineral processing. For many years you actually discouraged young people from studying the mining disciplines. Could that be right? That’s true.

A present the colleges and universities are struggling to meet the responsibilities placed upon them by the return of the veterans from the armed forces to the educational institutions as well as the youth graduating from the high schools. The problems of meeting these responsibilities are complex and upon the shoulders of the educational administrators lies much of the burden. One of those educators who is in the midst of this situation is James Rowland Cudworth, dean of the College of Engineering of the University of Alabama and Chairman of the Mineral Industry Education Division, AIME, both for 1946 and 1947. He was born at Norwich, Conn., on Sept. 23, 1897, and like his father before him went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he received his Bachelor's degree in 1921. His studies at MIT were mainly in the fields of geological and mining engineering. Why a New Englander studies mining is anybody's guess, but it may be due to a love of traveling to far places which so many New Englanders do. After graduating tinder the famed Waldemar Lindgren. Jim trekked to Mexico where he worked at Pachuca for the Cia. Real del Monte and at Charcas with the American Smelting and Refining Co.

Early in life he came to the United States, however, and graduated from the University of Colorado in 1915 .as a geologist. Two major issues are to be addressed in the Copper Concentrator of Mount Isa Mines Limited. The first of these is the need to increase concentrator flotation capacity to increase copper recovery, while the second is the need to reduce the iron sulphide dilution to meet future smelting requirements. Extra capacity in the cleaner and retreatment sections of the concentrator have been identified as key target areas, with additional copper recovery of at least one per cent identified from plant trials. Extensive pilot plant tests have been undertaken to evaluate the performance of the Jameson cell compared to conventional mechanical cell and column circuits. This work has shown that Jameson cells present an opportunity to achieve the desired grade and capacity specifications at lower capital cost than available alternatives. This paper outlines metallurgical results of work undertaken in the Copper Concentrator, together with a summary of pertinent Jameson cell operating parameters investigated during the period.

"In the summer of 1990, pilot scale testing of a Jameson cell was carried out at Falcon bridge Limited, Kidd Creek Division. The Jameson cell is self aspirating and has fewer mechanical parts, thus it has a lower operating cost compared to conventional cells. This lower operating cost combined with positive pilot scale results, justified the evaluation of two full scale cells in the plant. The plant test had two mandates:1. Gain a thorough understanding of the cells operation and design constraints.2. Develop a flow sheet to replace three divisions of copper cleaner flotation.This paper provides an overview on the installation, commissioning and evaluation of the two Jameson cells acquired. The current status of the test program is also discussed.IntroductionThe Falcon bridge Limited-Kidd Creek Division concentrator is located in Timmins, Ontario. The concentrator, commissioned in 1966 and expanded in 1978, consists of four parallel grinding and flotation divisions utilising small cell (60 ft3) technology. With increasing pressure to maintain low operating unit costs a series of studies were undertaken to assess the impact of new technologies in the flotation circuits. The goals of the project were to improve productivity through increased metallurgical performance and/or reduced operating costs.One of the technologies investigated was the Jameson cell designed by Dr. Graeme Jameson of the University of Newcastle and marketed by MIM Holdings Limited, Australia. This style of column technology was chosen based on its potential for reduced capital and operating cost versus large conventional cells.The success of pilot testwork in 1990 led to the installation of two production sized Jameson cells beginning in October 1991. The units were to be used to confirm pilot results and determine equipment requirements for flotation modernisation. This paper will discuss the results and experiences Kidd Creek has had with the Jameson cell from pilot scale through installation and commissioning of the plant units."
