The amount of lead in concentrates that moved in international trade in 1952 was only 16 pct of the world mine production of lead and was less than 27 pct of the total of lead in concentrates and lead metal that traveled from one country to another. Because almost all lead is derived from galena, lead concentrates are high grade, with a theoretical maximum of 86 pct lead, and can be shipped as such without transporting a considerable weight of waste material. It would not be surprising, therefore, to find the large share of lead in international trade moves in concentrates (Rule 5). This is not, as has just been mentioned, actually the case. There is more than one explanation for the situation. Lead smelting is not a particularly difficult process and is one for which smelting equipment can readily be made of the best size for the tonnage to be handled. Another factor that encourages local smelting is the effort of many mining countries to see that a maximum of profit from their raw materials remains in the home country. Still another factor is the newness of large scale lead mining in two of the three largest exporters of lead in concentrates. In these countries, South West Africa and French Morocco, there has not yet been time to erect enough smelting capacity to process all of the concentrate output. Even in these countries, however, it will not be long, if present trends continue and plans are fulfilled, before most or all of the lead mined is domestically smelted.

In contrast to international trade in lead, a much larger percentage of zinc shipped from one country to another is shipped in concentrate form. In 1952 international commerce in zinc concentrates accounted for 37 pct of world zinc mine production, and of the total zinc which traveled from one country to another, slightly more than 65 pct was in concentrates. The comparable figures for lead, given in Part VI, were 16 and 27 pct. Of the zinc mined in the world in 1952, 56.6 pct entered international trade; the analogous figure for lead was 57.4. This similarity in proportion of production traded is paralleled by a similarity in sources of exports. The three leading exporters of zinc in all forms in 1952 were Canada, Mexico, and Australia, in that order; the three largest exporters of lead were Mexico, Australia, and Canada. In contrast to the 86 pct theoretical maximum in lead concentrates, the maximum for zinc concentrate is only 67 pct. On this basis alone, it would be reasonable to expect that more zinc would be traded as zinc metal than lead as lead metal. Actually, the reverse is true. Less than 28 pct of the lead in international commerce moves as lead in concentrates, while 65 pct of the zinc so traded is as concentrates. Mexico, a country which has attempted to retain as much metal processing activity as possible within its own borders, has negligible exports of lead in concentrates.

INTRODUCTION In 1974, Industrial Miners Mexico, S.A. (IMMSA), agent for the borrowers, was the largest privately-held mining, smelting, and refining company in Mexico (accounting for 32% of Mexico's nonferrous metal and coal production in 1974), the fourth largest company in terms of sales, and the second most profitable company in Mexico, excluding government wholly-owned and operated industries. The company was engaged in the mining, smelting and refining of coal, copper, fluorite, gold, lead, silver, zinc and related by-products for domestic consumption and export. A combination of favorable factors led IMMSA to propose an investment plan amounting to US$286 million for 1974 through 1978, of which US$150 million was to be financed. These factors included: Substantial profits in 1973 and 1974 Positive near-term outlook for metal prices Success of the reinvestment program in increasing productivity Substantial additions to proved reserves during 1973-1974 and Fiscal incentives provided by the Mexican government to stimulate investment in the mining industry. The primary purpose of the investment program was to construct a new electrolytic zinc refinery and to expand and modernize many of the company's existing mining and refining facilities. THE BORROWER Company History Compania Miners Mexico, S.A. was incorporated in the city of Monterrey in 1918 as a wholly-owned subsidery of ASARCO Inc. (formerly American Smelting and Refining Company, New York) for the purpose of mining and processing non-ferrous metals and related products. In compliance with the Government's Mexicanization program, ASARCO Inc. divested itself of 51% of its equity in Compania Miners Asarco, S.A. on June 30, 1965. Subsequently, ownership in the divested share was apportioned as follows: 15% ownership in Compania Miners Asarco, S.A. to a group of private investors, and 36% in trust for subsequent public sale. The company's name was changed to Asarco Mexicana, S.A. in 1965. Mexican ownership in Asarco Mexicans, S.A. was increased to 51% in 1967, following the purchase of the 36% share ownership held in trust, and then to 66% in 1974 when ASARCO Inc. divested itself of an additional 15% of its holdings in Asarco Mexicans, S.A. Following its 1974 divestiture of 15% of Asarco Mexicans, S.A., ASARCO Inc's ownership in Asarco Mexicana, S.A. was reduced to 34%. In 1974, the company changed its name for the second time to Industrial Miners Mexico, S.A. (IMMSA). Fiscal Agreement IMMSA entered into a fiscal agreement with the Mexican government in 1969. The agreement, which was renewed in 1974, provided for 100% of the production and export tax corresponding to the federal government with a minimum of 50% of the amount refunded to be reinvested in fixed assets. The International Mining Convention held in Nelson, B; C., May 17 , to 19, was attended by nearly 500 delegates, of whom about 100 were from Spokane, 150 from the Slocan district, and the others from different points in Canada and the United States. Arrangements were in charge of the Nelson, Slocan and Eastern British Columbia Mining Men's Club, under the direction of Secretary Fred A. Starkey, assisted by the City of Nelson, Associated Boards of Trade of Eastern British Columbia and Nelson Board of Trade. The Columbia Section of the American Institute of Mining Engineers; cooperating with the Western Branch of the Canadian Mining Institute, provided the technical program, under the management of Secretary E. Jacobs, of Victoria, and Secretary L. K. Armstrong, of Spokane. Three technical sessions were held, at which the following were read: Difficulties of the Electrolytic Zinc Process, by Thomas French. In recent years there has been a trend among mining companies to diversify exploration and development away from the countries that have dominated mining activity for the latter half of this century. With some exceptions, this trend is accelerating and is a function of the recognition that many parts of the world, with no previous exposure to modern exploration, are endowed with considerable mineral potential. In addition coincident with changing political and economic circumstances, many countries have recognised the benefits of attracting international mining investment and have radically changed policies, fiscal and legal regimes so as to encourage exploration and mining. Some countries, however, have not readily accepted mining for cultural or social reasons and have yet to make effective changes to mining legislation. For historical reasons, other countries may have little or no direct experience of western economics, nor may they fully recognise the need for stability and competitive fiscal and legal systems to attract foreign investment. Not all ventures in new countries have been commercial successes and there have been some lamentable and recent lapses from grace. In 1997, a group of Canadian mining companies met to review the Mine Environment Neutral Drainage (MEND) program and to consider future activities. They concluded that (1) that Canadian industry and Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) should fund a small secretariat in Ottawa to support technology transfer in Canada and, (2) that it was important for industry to continue the momentum of MEND on an international scale. The need for the International Network for Acid Prevention (INAP) was strongly endorsed by consultants, company, university, and government experts from Australia, Canada, and the United States who convened in Vancouver in February 1998. The initial focus was the development of a solid knowledge base covering the collective experience of INAP?s members to promote the dissemination of successful practices, the identification of knowledge gaps, and the formulation of effective research proposals. The sharing of information on past successes and failures alone was viewed as sufficient justification for the formation of INAP. INAP was officially launched in October 1998, and is now an effective, industry-based initiative to globally coordinate research and development in the management of sulphide mine waste. Significant improvements in the management of sulphidic mine materials through knowledge sharing, research, and development of technology by INAP will reduce liability associated with acid drainage. The International Symposium-cum-Workshop on Management andControl of High Gas Emissions and Outbursts in Underground CoalMines was held in Wollongong in March 1995. Coverage of high gasemissions was virtually confined to instantaneous outburst implications, essentially seam gas pre-drainage. Globally, instantaneous outbursts have been known for 150 years, andthe first Australian outburst occurred in 1895 and Australian occurrences and mines affected have increased since. Few significant coal producing countries are unaffected. The coals affected range in rank from lignites to anthracites. Geological disturbances are the most likely environments for occurrences. The most likely mining geometry is of virgin headings, with some occurrences on longwalls and in other situations. Widespread research into many aspects of the problem has yet to produce a generally accepted explanation. Explosive inducement is a well-known control. Apparently high advance rates increase face gassiness and create higher stress abutments, increasing proneness. The most popular preventive measure, pre-drainage of virgin coal ahead of faces has produced highly successful very long hole drilling performances but without the precision necessary for accurate geometric hole patterns, despite quite sophisticated drilling equipment and hole surveying instruments. For the future, more precise degasification is sought, even from the surface, together with rapid face coal gassiness assessments to confirm lowering below threshold values, as well as other proneness lowering measures, perhaps related to new heading and longwall geometries and to new equipment to provide them. But above all, safe management plans are required for each operation, to safeguard the miners and their working environments, and thus to protect underground coal mining from this mounting threatening problem.

The major underlying threat to man's successful survival and happy existence on this planet is our own prolification. This poses an even greater threat to the future of civilization than continued wars and even "The Bomb" itself. Just the predictions of the world's population trend are awesome and demand our serious thought. This trend has been given the now well-known term, "The Population Explosion" - and this is literally what is taking place throughout most of the countries around the globe. Today, the world's resources support approximately 3.3 billion people. Based on the present world population growth rate of 2.1 percent, there will be another 65, million just one year from today. Such an increase in one year means that the world will add a greater population than that of Mexico and Canada combined. Projecting at this remarkable, but unchecked, growth rate, 6.7 billion people will be competing for survival by the end of this century.

This paper provides an overview of the international ?state of the art? with respect to underground coal mining methods used in seams of thickness greater than 4.5 m, through a review of a selection of high performing thick seam mining operations around the world?both Single Pass Longwall (SPL) and Longwall Top Coal Caving (LTCC). The paper discusses the recent operational experiences from these selected faces, together with the ground control issues faced, and identifies some of the major, inherent geotechnical factors that can influence the mining method selection, design criteria, and ultimate performance, from both an operational and safety perspective. It is clear that both of these methods are developing quickly? not only from an operational and equipment perspective, but also from the understanding of critical geotechnical criteria. There is an increasing role for both methods in thick seam environments, although the higher SPL faces will only be successful in the near to mid-term under benign geotechnical environments. Regardless of the method, a thorough understanding of the critical geotechnical factors is a key to successful implementation of either method.

As the mining industry is enjoying a much needed and long awaited increase in demand for natural resources, consolidations in both the mining and mining service industries and a generational departure of experienced industry professionals is challenging today’s mining companies, not only in maintaining their existing operations, but also in securing qualified resources for developing new projects. These challenges are compounded for junior mining companies, oftentimes lacking in operating properties to draw from for experienced professionals and having to compete with the majors’ “mega-projects” for experienced project personnel from the reduced ranks of engineering companies. This paper discusses some strategies developed by Anatolia Minerals Development Limited in developing its Çöpler Gold Project in central Turkey.

During the last ten years seven applications for nodule-bearing areas of the World Ocean Floor International Region (IR) have been made by national companies of Russia (Yuzhmorgeologiya), France (IFREMER/AFERNOD), Japan (DORD), India (The State Department of Sea Resources Development), China (COMRA), Korea (KORDI) and the Interokeanmetal Joint Organization (IOM) of some East European countries and have been registered by the Preparatory Commission of the United Nations International Seabed Authority (ISA). Besides these groups registered within Resolution 11 of the Final Act of the III United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea there are four international consortia registered in the USA [Kennecott (KCON), Ocean Mining Associates (DMA), Ocean Management Incorporated (OMI), and Ocean Minerals Company (OMCO)], which have interest in areas in the IR and can be considered as potential applicants. All registered areas (with the exception of the Indian Ocean) including the areas of potential applicants and also 6 areas, reserved for the ISA are located in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone of the Pacific Ocean. If within each area not less than one deposit of polymetallic nodule-bearing ores can be discovered, then, the total number of such deposits, for the present moment, is 20.

"By now, most geologists and engineers in the Canadian mining industry are familiar with National Instrument 43101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects (NI 43-101) and the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) Definition Standards for Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves, which are incorporated by reference in NI 43-101. In recent years, significant progress has also been made in establishing standard reporting practices internationally that recognize the globalization of the industry and enable investors to compare projects anywhere in the world and make informed investment decisions. This article is part of a series that will summarize the background and development of international resource and reserve reporting standards by the Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO), highlight its current activities and provide insight into international mineral reserve and resource reporting issues. CRIRSCO was formerly the Mineral Definitions Working Group of the Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions (CMMI), an organization representing professional bodies in all of the major mining and mining investment countries. In 2002, CMMI disbanded and CRIRSCO continued as a volunteer committee with limited funding from those professional bodies and increasingly from other sources, such as mining companies and regulatory bodies. CRIRSCO was adopted as a Task Force of the International Council of Mining and Metals (ICMM) in 2007. The ICMM is an influential industry body representing all of the major mining companies and many junior companies through its associated members, such as the Minerals Council of Australia, the Chamber of Mines of South Africa and the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada. CRIRSCO now has funding to pursue its objectives."

Automation of mining operations is pushed by cost pressure and cyclical product prices. However, until now the different types of equipment were not able to communicate electronically with each other or with central computer systems. Therefore, the International Rock Excavation Data Exchange Standard (IREDES) was launched by major players in the industry. The task of this initiative is to define a ‘common electronic language’ for easy and standardized data exchange. As in other industries, this standard is expected to have significant impact on the use of automation in general and on the markets for third party components and software. The standard’s technical architecture is open and flexible for future applications. It consists of an ‘horizontal’ structure defining ‘Application Profiles’ for different types of data sets. An additional ‘vertical’ structure (‘Equipment Profiles’) implements equipment dependent definitions for each of the applicable Application Profiles. First profiles will be available for Drill Rigs. The standard bases on the XML language thus enabling easy data exchange with commercial databases. IREDES data sets may use storage media as well as networking infrastructures for information exchange. The IREDES work is carried out by the initiative members working jointly together in the IREDES work groups. It is open for participation of all interested organizations. First prototyping applications are expected to start during 2001, the first products may be available in the following year. The supply of clean copper ores, which have high copper concentration and low impurities like arsenic, has declined year by year. Therefore, both mine and smelter sides have to consider how to remove impurities like arsenic. We focus herein on arsenic as an impurity because it is an extremely important issue from the environmental point of view. Approximately 150,000 t of arsenic is input into the copper industry every year. A small part of it is mainly treated in the smelting side. For instance, Ministro Hales Limited, which is a mining corporation in Chile, has performed the calcination process to remove arsenic from ore with high-arsenic content. In the process, flue gas is washed by water, and the final residue is treated by a hydrometallurgical process. Many processes for arsenic removal in various stages have been proposed, and several bottlenecks exist to achieve it. One of the difficulties encountered is getting an assessment of the process, which depends on the countries and/or areas of operation. The standardization of the assessment procedure will be desired in the near future to keep the same environment standards all over the world, and now is the time to start making discussions on this matter. This will be the first step in making an international assessment procedure for arsenic treatment in the copper industry. INTRODUCTION Using the term “sustainable development” without any scientific basis can give people a false sense of security. Engineers and scientists must analyze the total mass flow of energy and materials and estimate local drain on the environment as well as the global impact of a particular industrial activity to ensure sustainability on this planet. The operations of the mining and smelting industries have a strong effect on the environment even if they provide useful materials for human beings. The copper mining and smelting industries have brought about serious environmental problems in the past. For example, the Ashio mine pollution caused big damage to the agricultural sector near the Ashio area in Japan in the late 19th century. One of the most serious problems at that time was SO2 emission because copper ore is sulfide, and the smelting process basically results to sulfur oxidation. The resource balance from a copper smelter in a year, assuming a total production of 16 million tons, can be summarized as follows: discarded minerals, 30 billion tons; sulfur, 16 million tons; iron oxide, 8 million tons; additional smaller amounts of other metals, electricity, and fuel.

VISIT TO THE COUNCIL FOR SCIENTIFIC AND INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH On 23rd June, 1970, members of the Institute visited the C.S.I.R. in Pretoria. More members had booked for this tour but the current flu epidemic caused cancellations which was unfortunate. The visit was organised with military precision, which prevented detailed discussion of any particular subject, but provided a bird's eye view of a large number of interesting projects. The visit was packed with interest for all and those requiring further information were invited to contact the relevant divisions afterwards. Or Denkhaus welcomed the delegates and stressed the importance of integrating research efforts with industry's requirements. An excellent colour and sound film was shown which depicted the work of the Rock Mechanics division. This showed very clearly methods used for preparing rock samples and demonstrated the machines and instruments for the various tests. It made one realise the extent to which this research has been integrated with the actual mining situation. The fullscale experiments underground showed the failure of pillars under applied loads and were very interesting. This is undoubtedly a film which all mining people should see. After the film the rock mechanics laboratories were visited where the actual machines were seen and described. We then visited the metal and strength mechanics sections where the metallurgists were able to see some interesting experiments and tests. We also visited the Aeronautics Research group where a large 1 000 hp wind tunnel was inspected. We were told enough about this to realise something of the complexities involved in the design and operation of a closed circuit tunnel of this type. The tunnel is used for tests on models which are necessary for the design and modification of aircraft. After a very excellent lunch at the C.S.I.R. recreation centre, the delegates attended two lectures-one by Mr. Mandersloot of the Chemical Engineering group, who outlined the varied functions of this group and told us something of their work. Of particular interest was the research into the suitability of various South African manganese ores for dry cell batteries. Work on the thickener settlement studies interested the metallurgists. The second lecture was given by Mr Donaldson of the National Building Research Institute. This Institute has about ten divisions each of which covers a particular aspect of building research. The work of the soil mechanics division was described in detail and illustrated by coloured slides. This was particularly interesting and demonstrated clearly how building failures result from lack of attention to detail of construction where unstable soil conditions exist. Cracks in walls of compound blocks brought the subject home forcibly to the mining delegates. This division has also caried out important work on sinkholes and sUmes dams and produced some positive results. Altogether the visit was most interesting and enjoyable. It was made more worthwhile because the emphasis was on the work being carried out and not on just seeing the laboratories. The Institute is greatly indebted to the C.S.I.R. and its staff for the very excellent arrangements made.

The Tooele plant is situated at the mouth of Pine Canyon, five miles northeast of Tooele City. The site forms one terminus of the Tooele Valley railway, which runs southwest through Tooele City to Warner, a station on the Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad, thirty-five miles southwest of Salt Lake City. An aerial tramway, four miles in length, crosses the Oquirrh mountains and connects the plant with the Bingham district. The plant consists of a lead-zinc flotation concentrator, lead smelter and copper smelter.
