"La mine Lamaque est située a Val d'Or, Québec; les roches hônes appartiennent au groupe de Malartic, partie supérieure, et sont des andésites et des pyroclastites. On y retrouve deux formes d'intrusifs; des petites cheminées (ca. 150 m D) et des dykes (ca. 10 m d'epaisseur). Les petit es cheminées contiennent:1 - des diorites et des tonalites (cheminées principale, est et ouest) d'affinité calco-alcaline: Zr 140 ppm, Sr 761 ppm, P2O5 0.31% et (La/Sm)n 3.0;2 - des diorites (cheminée 4) d'affinités tholéiitique: Zr 32 ppm, Sr 181 ppm, P2O5 0.27% et (La/SM)n 1.5.La diorite de la cheminée no 5 contient deux fractions, une de chacune de ces deux affinités. Les dykes tant de porphyre feldspathique quartzifére que ceux de prophyre feldspathique sont d'affinité calco-alcaline: Zr 83 ppm, Sr 500 ppm et P2O5j 0.10%.Le gisement de 10 mine 2 est filonien: veines subhorizontales (""flats "") surtout et veines sub-verticales dans des zones de cisaillement. Le dernier réajustement structural de direction de compression nord-sud a broyé le quartz des veines existant es et rendu possible leur minéralisation. Les veines minéralisées contiennent du quartz, de la tourmaline, de la calcite avec des traces de scheelite, de pyrite et d'or; elles sont bordées par de minces (2 à 20 cm) bordures d'altération où l'on retrouve un enrichissement en carbonate, paragonite, apatite, rutile, saphène et zircon et où les phases ferromagnésiennes sont disparues. On a documenté le migrations géochimiques suivantes:I - de la bordure d'altération vers l'éponte, K2O, Rb et MgO;2 - de l'éponte vers la bordure d'altération, Na2O;3 - de l'éponte vers la veine, SiO2.P2O5, TiO2, Zr, Y, Nb et CaO sont enrichis dans la bordure d'altération."

"Le gisement polymétallique (Cu-Zn-Au-Ag) des Mines Selbaie est forme par un réseau de filons encaisses dans une séquence de pyroclastites felsiques du sill on Harricana-Turgeon. Les minéralisations sont encaissées dans le tuf de Selbaie, situe sous une épaisse séquence d'ignimbrites Iitées. Ce gisement se distingue des autres gites archéens par une chronologie atypique des minéralisations: les veines de chalcopyrite, de sphalérite et de galène recoupent un amas exhalatifpyriteux stérile. Un vaste halo d'altération hydrothermale a chlorite et mica blanc est associe à cette minéralisation.La mise en place des veines minéralisées est associée à une phase d'extension NNW-SSE. Le complexe volcanique subit, par la suite, trois phases de déformation. Une compression, orienté N-S, développe une schistosité à peine pénétrative et un réseau de fentes de tension. Une réorientation des contraintes locales selon une direction WNW-ESE conduit au chevauchement de I' écaille d'andésite et de tonalite de Brouillan. Un réseau conjugue de failles normales cassantes est associe au relâchement des contraintes."

"Nos travaux de terrain dans le Grenville, effectués dans le cadre d'un projet d'inventaire des gîtes de wollastonite, ont démontré qu'il existe un secteur exceptionnellement favorable à l’exploration pour la wollastonite. Ce secteur s'étend de la municipalité de Grenville jusqu'au pare du Mont-Tremblant (nord de St-Jovite). D'autres secteurs favorables a 'exploration pour la wollastonite ont été délimités dans les regions du Lac-Saint-Jean, de Shawinigan et de la Gatineau. Neuf categories litho-structurales de gites de wollastonite furent identifiées. L'importance d'un système ou vert pour la formation des gîtes de hautes teneurs fut établie. Un guide de prospection pour la wollastonite propre à la province tectonique de Grenville fut développé. Plusieurs des indices sont prometteurs et mériteraient des travaux de raise en valeur afin de determiner s'ils représentent une source de wollastonite exploitable à profit. Lac-Saint-Jean, Shawinigan and Gatineau areas. Deposits may be classified into nine categories depending on their relationship to intrusive rocks, discordant or concordant contacts with the host rocks, morphology, and major structural controls. Deposits consist mainly of wollastonite, calcite and clinopyroxene. They may contain one or several of the following minerals: feldspar, scapolite, quartz, titanite sulphides, zoisite, clinozoisite, garnet, idocrase and prehnite. Wollastonite content may reach over 70%. Some deposits are associated with graphite veins. Better understanding of the geology, combined with the proposed classification provides new exploration guide for wollastonite. Several deposits have grades of economic interest. Further work is needed to determine if any of these deposits can be exploited for profit."

The discovery of the Prudhoe Bay field temporarily reduced interest in the development of coal conversion processes, but interest is being re¬newed by the current energy crisis. According to M.A. Wright, Chairman of the Board of Humble Oil and Refining Company(l), the reserve in the Prudhoe Bay bield has been confirmed to be about 10 billion barrels. At first glance this appears to be an extremely large reserve which will eliminate supply problems for the United States for some time. This feeling of security is lost when one realizes that by 1980 the world will consume the reserves of a Prudhoe Bay or a Libya, or Venezuela in less than a year, based on the recent predictions of U.S. and world reserves made by Eastman-Dillon, Union Securities Company(2). Recent forecasts of U.S. demand and source of supply made by Kenneth E. Hill of Eastman-Dillon are shown in Figure 1. This forecast shows a decline in domestic supplies (excluding Alaska) after 1973, with the total domestic supply leveling off in 1975 at about 13 million barrels per day. Since the predicted demand increases from about 14 million barrels per day in 1970 to about 20 million barrels per day in 1980, about 35% of domestic consumption must come from imports or non-conventional sources by 1980. More imminent is the shortage of low sulfur fuel oil which has been created by the new, tough air pollution regulations that are basically legis¬lating eastern coals out of the market. As an alternate to importing large quantities of low sulfur fuel oil or importing and desulfurizing regular fuel oil, one of two domestic solutions is possible: stack gas clean-up or solids fuel pretreatment. Stack gas clean-up may be the cheapest approach for old installations, but fuel pretreatment has real advantages for new installations. The H-Coal process, an ebullated bed reactor system for converting coal to liquid fuel, is described. Results from long-duration continuous flow bench-scale operations with Wyoming Wyodak, Arizona Black Mesa, and Utah Kaiparowits Plateau coals are presented. Economic data on the conversion of these coals to liquid products are given. The potentials of the H-Coal process in regard to coal from western producers is stressed.

Newest of those elected to the Institute's roster of Honorary Members, Sir Harold is distinguished for his achievements in the field of metallurgy as an investigator, teacher, administrator, organizer, and director of research. His interests in research have been in both the ferrous and non-ferrous fields. His name is particularly honored in its association with the establishment of fundamental con¬stants and of critical ranges of iron and iron alloys, and with original and fundamental studies of the preparation and properties of metal single crystals.

H G. MOULTON should not be confused with the famous economist of the same name. Our H. G. stands for Herbert George, whereas the chief of the Brookings Institution is Harold Glenn. Like most so- called New York members of the Institute's hoard, Mr. Moulton came from the West, in this case from Idaho where he was born, and Oregon, where he was educated at the University of Oregon. His early work included such jobs as mucker, assayer, smelter, chemist, mine surveyor, draftsman, engineer on surveys and construction, and assistant on mine examinations. In 1909 he was engaged as mining engineer by the firm of Eugene Meyer, Jr. S' Co., continuing with them for the next eight years.

H20 is present in many flash furnace inputs. Examples are: (a) moisture in concentrate and flux (b) humidity in blast (c) moisture in hydrocarbon fuel, particularly coal, Appendix IV. H20 may also leak into the furnace from damaged water-cooling jackets. H2O, especially that it be included H2O, exerts a strong cooling effect on the flash furnace. It is important our calculations. As will be seen from the calculations, gaseous and liquid H2O both increase flash furnace industrial oxygen and oil requirements. This is because gaseous H2O (humidity in blast) must be heated from its input temperature to the flash furnace off gas temperature. Liquid H2O must be evaporated and heated.

Waste phosphatic clay presents a difficult disposal problem and a significant loss of P2O5. Recent developments make this study on the use of phosphatic clay as a feed material for H3PO4 production worthwhile. (a) New data from Florida Industrial and Phosphate Research Institute (FIPR) suggest that the Bclay^ waste can be effectively treated by improved solid separation coupled with flotation to produce feed material for recovering additional phosphate. (b) The use of BOLI Flowsheet^ provides capability to predict performance of aqueous-based processes for a range of possible operating conditions. Using the new FIPR data and BOLI Flowsheet^ enabled the design of a new process that can potentially extend the usefulness of current P2O5 ore deposits. Predictions using OLI Flowsheet were able to identify process conditions that effectively overcome the difficulty of high Mg content of phosphatic clay. Estimated manufacturing cost in the current study lead to valuation of the P2O5 content of the phosphatic clay recovered/utilized at 60 to 70% of that of the phosphate rock feed material currently used. Phosphatic clay should be considered as a valuable material that is currently given zero value. The Haber Gold Process (HGP) is a proprietary. hydrometallurgical extraction methodology that was developed in 1983-1984 by Norman Haber and Dr. John Lee of Haber, Inc., a small public company in Towaco, New Jersey specializing in hydrochemical process development for precious metals. It was pilot tested repeatedly in 1985 at our pilot plant in Tombstone, Arizona, with different types of gold bearing mineralization. Both Pincock, Allen and Holt (USA), and PA Technology (Australia) were involved with some of these pilot tests. The ores tested included easily cyanide-extractable oxide type gold ore from Australia, marginal heap-leach type ore from Cripple Creek, USA, and a hematite bearing ore from California. In all cases, extraction time was 6 hours or less yielding 90-99% recoveries of assayed gold values. The HGP operates as a lixivient which parts the gold from the rock matrix, yielding gold in solution in a fully recoverable form. Both precipitation methods, such as zinc participation or Carbon in Leach systems ( or Carbon in Pulp) have been shown to be feasible with this technology for the recovery of gold from the pregnant solution. Both batch vat leaching as well as continuous processing are realistic for use with the HGP. It has also been considered that the HGP might also benefit heap leaching due to several advantageous factors over cyanide. One such consideration is that the HGP can operate effectively with acidic ore types. The use of cyanide with such ores often requires attention to pH and neutralization with lime. This tends to reduce and even clog the permeability of the leach bed.
