En el caso de la minería de zinc es común emplear el método de explotación por subniveles, el cual exige rellenar los caserones vacíos, por ejemplo, con una mezcla del relave producto de la planta concentradora de mineral con un 3.5% de cemento, lo que actúa como pilar de sostenimiento de la mina (0.8 MPa). Debido a que al momento de avanzar en los tajos aledaños se producía una dilución con el mineral a explotar y, también, a que era necesario automatizar las operaciones; se decidió evaluar el relleno detrítico cementado, mediante análisis de resistencia, estudios de factibilidad, rendimiento en costos, aumento de productividad y seguridad en la operación. Como resultado, se obtuvieron valores máximos de resistencia de los pilares de 1.6 MPa, lo que evitó la dilución y mejoró el porcentaje de recuperación de mineral.

An elaborate model for the magnetite distribution and genesis in the Smallwood mine, Labrador, based on factor analysis with orthogonal and oblique rotation of the factors, was proposed in an earlier paper. However, it is implicit in that model that variances of one variable shared with all others (communality) are estimated. To avoid the problem of communality estimation in the present investigation, a different type of factor analysis is used which (1) emphasizes the shared variances, and (2) attempts to eliminate, as much as possible, errors associated with the estimation of communality and sampling (unique variance). The samples for the present analysis are not the commonly employed oxide percentage variables, but counts of mineral species in specified areas of thin sections from drill core in the Smallwood mine: quartz, magnetite, calcite, and specular-hematite minerals. El presente trabajo es un análisis del sistema de organización del sistema de seguridad a través del modelo Reason de causalidad o de "queso suizo", donde se identifica qué aspectos y decisiones se convierten en un factor condicionante para un accidente y también cómo la organización puede aprender de un accidente perfeccionando sus defensas en un ciclo de mejora continua. De forma que este modelo explica que un accidente es la consecuencia final de una superposición de fallas que va desde la última línea de defensa, pasando por el acto inseguro, la condición insegura, la falla de la supervisión, la falla de la asesoría (seguridad) hasta la falla de la organización. Para solucionar dicho problema, se realiza una gestión del error que incluye una serie de medidas preventivas como descubrir, evaluar y eliminar los factores que producen el error dentro de la fuerza laboral y así desarrollar la realidad intrínseca de la organización contra los errores humanos.

Veladero es un depósito epitermal de metales preciosos de alta sulfuración hospedado en brechas y rocas de litologías brechadas y está situado en San Juan, Argentina. Regionalmente, se localiza en el cinturón volcánico terciario del Valle del Cura (Argentina), que es adyacente al cinturón de El Indio (Chile). En ese sentido, el presente texto describe los factores que descubrieron el depósito, menciona las principales referencias respecto de su geología local y regional y enfatiza los aspectos institucionales y técnicos del descubrimiento, realizado por Minera Argentina Gold S.A. (MAGSA).

El presente texto describe los factores que intervienen en la economía de la molienda con bolas, considerando la carga y calidades de las mismas. Para determinar cuáles son los factores en el estudio económico, es necesario conocer las cuatro calidades básicas de las bolas de las moliendas: las bolas de aleación de acero, forjadas y con tratamiento térmico, las bolas de acero al carbono forjadas y con tratamiento térmico, las bolas de aleación de acero fundido y las bolas de fierro fundido. Los productos fundidos generalmente no son tratados térmicamente y las bolas de fierro fundido son un producto de bajo precio y más ordinario. En este sentido, una bola tratada térmicamente sea en aleación de acero o de acero al carbono, tendrá una estructura granular más fina que las de los productos fundidos. Para fijar la economía de un tipo de bola, se utilizan dos formas de investigación: la prueba de bolas marcadas y la de resultados de producción, estableciendo esta última como la más exacta, aunque requiera molinos duplicados para medir su producción. Luego, se procede a experimentar con diferentes tipos de bolas -a través del costo de transporte y manejo requeridos para moler una tonelada de mineral- y asi determinar cuál es la bola más económica para cada operación. Posteriormente se evalúa la facilidad de la molienda y se delimita la carga de bolas que se aproxime mejor a la carga balanceada.

This paper presents a matrix formulation of factorial kriging, and its relationships with simple and ordinary kriging. Similar to other kriging methods, factorial kriging can be applied to both stationary and intrinsic stochastic processes, and is often used as a local operator. Therefore, the concepts of intrinsic random function and local stationarity are first briefly reviewed. Kriging is presented in a block matrix form in which the kriging solution is useful not only for understanding the relationships between simple and ordinary kriging methods, but also the relationships between interpolative kriging and factorial kriging. When used as a signal/noise-filtering method, factorial kriging is especially useful for multiscale modelling. Examples for general signal analysis and geophysical data signal filtering are given to illustrate the method..

"The co-deposition of cobalt and nickel as a binary alloy has been studied by both cyclic voltammetry and long-period controlled-potential electrolysis. Cyclic voltammetry experiments showed that the cathodic current density for the mixed Co-Ni (Co-Ni=1:3) electrolyte is noticeably higher than that obtained on electrolyte containing single CO2+ or Ni2+ (II) salt of the same ionic strength. The onset potential observed for the mixed salts electrolyte was also less cathodic (negative) than that for the single metal salts, respectively. The effects of a number of operational and compositional parameters on the co-deposition of cobalt and nickel were studied. The parameters under investigation include cathode (deposition) potential, temperature, CI-/Sol ratio in the electrolyte, the amount of additives such as H3B03, and acidity of the electrolyte.Optimum operational conditions were established for the deposition of cobalt and nickel binary alloy. These results are discussed with respect to feasibility of reclaiming cobalt, nickel and chromium from mixed superalloy scraps by melt-refining (under nitrogen and/or ammonia), followed by electrorerining of cast anode for co-depositing Co/Ni and thermal decomposition of chromium nitride for recovering chromium metal."

ONE of the problems of the fabricator of metals and alloys is the propensity of some composition ranges toward abnormal grain growth during certain stages of fabrication. In this respect magnesium alloys are no exception among alloys. Fortunately, convenient foundry control methods have been developed by which the abnormal grain growth possible in certain magnesium-alloy castings can be suppressed. An unusual characteristic of magnesium alloys, however, is that castings of some composition ranges are subject to local grain growth during heat-treatment without the necessity of intentional mechanical stressing of the part prior to heat-treatment. This effect occurs only under certain critical casting conditions, and only in certain alloys of greater than about 8.5 per cent aluminum content, such as C alloy (Mg, o per cent Al, 2 per cent Zn, 0.2 per cent Mn) and G alloy (Mg, i0 per cent Al, 0.2 per cent Mn). The first observation of this phenomenon in cast magnesium alloys occasioned much surprise, since it is not observed in other metals. Jeffries and Archer' have stated that "the grain size of cast metals, provided they have not been plastically deformed, cannot be changed by heating below the melting point." The study of the conditions leading to abnormal grain growth in cast magnesium alloys, and of the mechanism of this phenomenon, has led to some very interesting observations. Perhaps the most significant of these was the observation that stresses originating from cooling contraction in magnesium-alloy castings are the only stresses necessary, under certain conditions, to cause local recrystallization and subsequent grain growth in the casting during heat-treatment. of abnormal local grain growth was a definite problem in the production foundry on C alloy sand castings. Illustrated (Fig. r) is a picture of a casting scrapped because of this defect. A mottled effect is produced in coarse-grained areas by suitable etching solutions. The properties of metal in the affected area are much impaired by such grain coarsening. Ultimate tensile strengths of half the normal value have been measured in metal of this nature. In this paper are described the techniques that have been developed by The Dow Chemical Co. for studying, and in large measure solving, this production problem. Also discussed are studies of the mechanism by which excessive grain coarsening occurs, and the fundamental conditions that produce this effect. The abnormal grain growth discussed in this paper will be referred to as "germination," since this term has been defined' as any process leading to an abnormally coarse grain size. Acid mine drainage is a serious and chronic environmental problem of mining. This paper discusses the factors affecting the rate of acid generation by mine rocks and illustrates the relevance of these factors to the mines of the Northern Territory, Australia. The factors may be divided into two groups: internal factors and external factors. The first group covers characteristics of ores, mine waste rocks, tailings, etc and the second group covers surrounding conditions. The latter is further divided into four sub-groups, viz surrounding temperature and pressure, chemical conditions (ferrous/ferric adsorption ratio, total iron concentration, oxygen concentration and pH), surrounding biological conditions and mechanical conditions. Special attention is given to the surrounding P-T conditions, especially water partial pressure, and its relevance to the Northern Territory mines.

Thin spray-on liners are increasingly being used as rock support in underground mines. The adhesive strength between the liner and the rock surface is an important design parameter. Adhesion tests were conducted to assess the impact on adhesion of the presence of oil, water, and dust on a substrate, and the roughness and grain size of different substrates. Other factors such as curing time, loading rate, and liner thickness were also considered. Adhesion was measured using a pull test of a 33 mm diameter elevator bolt attached to an over-cored section of liner with strong epoxy. Most tests were performed using Tekflex liner material, although five other liner products were also tested. Adhesive strengths of about 2 MPa can be achieved with Tekflex under optimal conditions. Long-term creep tests showed that the adhesive strength could drop by at least 50% when the liner carries load for about a month. Where the rock surface is contaminated with dust or the rock is weak in tension, it may be difficult to reach adhesion strengths of 1 to 1.5 MPa. As the thickness of the liner increases, the adhesive strength to a substrate appears to decrease.

For many years there have been small scale tests available for evaluating the toxic fumes production by capsensitive explosives (DOT Class 1. l), but these could not be used with blasting agents due to the large charge sizes and heavy confinement required for proper detonation. Considering the extensive use of blasting agents in construction and mining, there is a need to determine the quantities of toxic ti,tmes generated by blasting agents. At the International Society of Explosive Engineers Twenty Third Annual Conference on Explosives and Blasting Technique in 1997, the authors reported on a facility for detonating large (4.54 kg), confined blasting agent charges in a controlled volume that had been constructed at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s Pittsburgh Research Lab’s Experimental Mine. Since 1997, this facility has been used to collect data on toxic fumes produced by the detonation of various ammonium nitrate/fuel oil (ANFO) mixtures and several cap-sensitive explosives. ANFO composition ranging from 1 to 10 percent (pet) tieI oil have been studied. As expected from previous studies, with an increase in fuel oil content the carbon monoxide production increases, while nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide production decrease. The detonation velocity varies from 3,000 to 4,000 m/set for the 1 to 10 pet range of fuel oil content, suggesting that ANFO mixes with improper fuel oil content may appear to detonate properly, while their fume production differs significantly from optimum. The study also considers such factors as degree of confinement, water contamination, and aluminum content on blasting agent fume production. Results indicate that water contamination of the ANFO has little effect on carbon monoxide production, but causes significant increase in nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide production. Decreasing confinement from Schedule 80 steel pipe to 0.4~mm thick sheet metal also has little effect on carbon monoxide production, but significantly increases nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide production. Adding 5 and 10 pet aluminum to the ANFO had no clear effect on carbon monoxide, nitric oxide, or nitrogen dioxide production.

AT THE annual meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers in February, 1923, the Chairman of the Committee on Ground Movement and Subsidence appointed a subcommittee to work out a form of questionnaire and to collect data on subsidence and ground movement resulting from underground metal- and coal-mining operations, and on ground movement and safe slopes in connection with open-cut metal-mining operations. The author was requested to take charge of the collection of data and the preparation of a questionnaire in connection with the Committee's studies of open-cut metal-mining operations, this paper is a summary of the work carried on and information received therefrom up to February, 1924. The first approach to the problem of safe slopes is to gather all information that pertains to finished slopes; in other words, the steepest economic angle from the horizontal that will stand in order to uncover the ores to be mined and be safe while the extraction of the ore at the base of these slopes is in progress. Whether or not this angle is 35° or 45° depends on many factors. The number of benches maintained to take care of falling rock and their height and width are direct functions of this overall slope. The slope is here taken to mean the angle from the top edge of the pit through the edges of the respective lower benches to the bottom of the pit. If we accept this definition of the slope, it might save some confusion as there would be a difference if one took the line from the top edge of excavation to the toe of the bottom slope. This latter slope would not be constant, but would vary with the number of benches. The depth of the various ore faces will vary, of course, depending on the deposit; Table 1 shows this to range from 50 ft. to 1100 ft. The geology is an important factor, as are the climatic conditions under which one is operating. A saturated condition in some rock structure causes rock flows; in the Panama Canal excavation, slides have run on a ratio of as low as one on ten, which is a 10 per cent. grade, or a slope of less than 6° with the horizontal. The relationships that link microstructural properties of advanced permanent magnet materials with magnetic properties such as the coercivity are often difficult to quantify, especially in materials with nano-scale structures. Recent work on RE2Fe14B-based powders fabricated with rapid- solidification techniques such as inert gas atomization (IGA) and melt-spinning provide insight into the nanostructural features which affect the acquisition and stability of coercivity. In all cases the coercivity is found to be a function of both the scale of the constituent microstructure and of the presence and distribution of minor phases.

Vertical crater retreat mining (VCR) requires initiation methods that minimize debris in the borehole. The use of detonating cord and shock tube detonators eliminates debris that could interfere with subsequent loading operations and avoids the cost of using drilling equipment to clear the debris. The explosive must not be sensitive to the strength of detonating cord used, otherwise timing will be affected. “Slicing and Dicing” of product before “Air mailing” down boreholes may facilitate loading, especially in wet holes, and can result in product surrounding the detonating cord. Cord sensitivity testing confirmed that having the detonating cord surrounded by product significantly increases the likelihood of an energetic reaction. Careful formulation and testing, based on a thorough knowledge of the application and the role of ingredients in affecting performance, ensures reliable initiation and avoids cord sensitivity. The use of certain metallic nitrate salts, even in relatively small amounts, was found to significantly increase the cord sensitivity of watergel formulations. Evidence of increasing cord sensitivity includes increasing amounts of damage to product and packaging, to ejection of product from the test pipe, then cracking of the pipe, followed by deflagration then detonation of the product. Predictably, the likelihood of an energetic reaction increases with product temperature, cord strength, and borehole diameter, while it is inversely related to product density.

The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) has been investigating the use of polyethylene oxide (PEO) as a flocculant for a variety of mineral wastes. As part of this investigation, the hydrodynamics of the flocculation process were studied. It was determined that to obtain optimum dewatering results, the factors of energy input into the stirrer, polymer concentration, and polymer dosage must be considered. It was found that at a given polymer concentration, there were an optimum stirrer speed and polymer dosage. With excess PEO, the amount of water removed in the trommel decreased, but no evidence for steric stabilization was observed.
