"As-cast, As-forged, as-solution-treated, and solution treated and aged microstructures of Ti-15Mo (IMI205) with and without carbon were examined using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy .and transmission electron microscopy. Tensile testing was carried out at room temperature. It was found that carbon acts primarily as a titanium carbide former: Titanium carbides increase slightly the tensile strength, but decrease the ductility of IMI205. These observations are interpreted in terms of the titanium carbide morphology observed using SEM and TEM and the phase diagrams of Ti-Mo, Ti-C, and Mo-C.IntroductionIn a recent study on the development of a burn-resistant 13-Ti alloy, carbon was introduced· into the Ti-V-Cr system in order to optimise the mechanical properties. Research results[1, 2] demonstrate that carbon addition can refine the 13 grain size and improve the stability of the 13 phase in Ti-V-Cr alloys. The most attractive result is that carbon addition produced a marked improvement in the ductility of alloys when the carbon content is over 0.1 wt.% in this alloy system. Even after long exposure, the alloy with carbon addition maintains good ductility. One of the main reasons for the ductilising of the alloy is that titanium carbides can getter the oxygen from the 13 matrix.In view of the success of carbon addition in improving the properties and the stability of the Ti-V-Cr alloy, it is of interest to investigate the behaviour of carbon addition in other beta Ti-base alloys. The objective of the present work was, therefore, to assess the microstructures and mechanical properties of IMI 205, a metastable beta titanium alloy, with and without carbon addition using optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), wavelength dispersive X-ray (WDX) analysis, room temperature tensile testing."

The pellet qualities primarily depend upon the thermal profile and gaseous environment during induration. During the induration of the pellet, it undergoes physical as well as chemical changes. Physical changes are mostly due to sintering and chemical changes are due to carbon burning inside the pellet. The effect of carbon on sintering is investigated on a single pellet scale using an optical dilatometer. Sintering is a complex process that involves transportation through various mechanisms. Sintering is quantified in terms of sintering ratio and the kinetic parameter, exponent ‘n’, under isothermal conditions is deduced using the power law equation. The value of n can be used to estimate the sintering mechanism at different isothermal temperatures. Also, the activation energy is calculated using the empirical Arrhenius equation. The activation energy of 0 per cent coke and 1 per cent coke-containing pellets are 531.0 kJ/mole and 552.6 kJ/mole respectively. The order of magnitude of activation energy suggests the same mechanism in both cases. Although the mechanism of sintering is the same, 1 per cent coke-containing pellet sinters more at any isothermal temperature.

Conventional processing of poly-metallic gold containing flotation concentrates are challenging for a number of reasons. One reason is that substantial copper and zinc in the cyanide leach solution compete with gold and silver for carbon adsorption sites. In this study, metal-cyanide adsorption kinetics and equilibrium are measured on three samples of coconut derived activated carbon and one sample of synthetic carbon. Loading selectivity was confirmed to be in the order gold>silver>copper>zinc for all carbon samples. The synthetic carbon tested showed promising results in terms of loading kinetics and capacity for precious metals.CITATION:Lakemond, S, Ku, L I and Vaughan, J, 2013. ?Preg-robbing? is the active adsorption of gold from cyanide solution by the ore components. The role of carbonaceous coatings on chalcopyrite surfaces in the preg-robbing of chalcopyrite has been investigated by using pure chalcopyrite and a copper concentrate. Activated carbon and graphite were chosen as representative carbonaceous contaminants. It was found that the carbonaceous coatings enhanced the preg-robbing of chalcopyrite. Activated carbon coating increased gold adsorption onto chalcopyrite to a lager extent, in comparison with graphite coating. In the preg-robbing of the copper concentrate, gold adsorption was increased to larger extent at finer particle sizes and at higher contents of activated carbon or graphite. The preg-robbing of chalcopyrite was reduced or eliminated, depending on the concentrations of free cyanide. However, the gold adsorption on the carbon and graphite coated chalcopyrite could not be avoided even at higher cyanide concentrations, and this adsorption was solely attributed to the carbonaceous coatings. Zeta potential studies indicated that the carbonaceous coatings reduced the negativity of the chalcopyrite surface charge. As shown by SEM analysis, gold not only accumulated at the edges and defect sites, but was also spotted on the smooth surfaces of chalcopyrite with carbon or graphite present. XPS results revealed that gold was strongly reduced on chalcopyrite surfaces, with the sulfide ions of the chalcopyrite being oxidized to elemental sulfur. Diagnostic elution indicated three mechanisms contributing to gold take-up by chalcopyrite, i.e. gold reduction, physical adsorption and chemical adsorption.

Shale gas wells drilled in longwall chain pillars are influenced by longwall mining. Longwall mining on each side of the chain pillars can create overburden movements and induce deformations in gas well casings. If the deformations result in a casing breach, intrusive shale gas could leak into the longwall mine with serious safety consequences. This study concerns five shale gas wells in the chain pillars between two adjacent longwall panels in the Pittsburgh coal seam under a cover depth of 670 ft and a mining height of 7 ft. The gas wells were constructed with typical casing design, but a casing cementing alternative with uncemented production casings was practiced. Four production casings were uncemented, and one production casing was unintentionally cemented with good quality cement to a 535-ft depth and low-quality cement stringers from a 444- to 535-ft depth. The longwall faces passed by the shale gas wells as each adjacent longwall panel retreated. Production casings were surveyed by a multi-finger caliper after each panel was mined. No deformation was detected in the four uncemented production casings, but small deformations were detected in the partially cemented production casing. The maximum measured deformation in the cemented production casing was 0.05 in. after first panel mining and 0.06 in. after second panel mining. The casing deformations were also predicted by the FLAC3D model set up on site-specific overburden geology. The predicted deformations were in good agreement with the measurements in terms of deformation locations and magnitudes. All five shale gas wells resumed normal production after being temporarily plugged during the period of mine-by. This study provides a successful demonstration of the effectiveness of a casing cementing alternative for decoupling production and intermediate casing, and thus minimizing the influence of longwall mining in the shale gas wells drilled through longwall chain pillars.

A new process for converting sulfur dioxide to elemental sulfur by a cyclic process involving calcium sulfide and calcium sulfate without generating secondary pollutants was developed at the University of Utah. In this process, sulfur dioxide is reacted with calcium sulfide to produce elemental sulfur and calcium sulfate. The latter is reduced by hydrogen to regenerate calcium sulfide. In the present work, the effects of different pelletization conditions for the initial reactant calcium sulfate on the strength and reactivity of the pellets were determined. These conditions include the type, amount, and impregnation method of catalyst, binder amount, and sintering. Experiments were also performed to determine the effects of temperature in the range of 973-1173 K, pellet size, cycle repetition, and water vapor or carbon dioxide content in sulfur dioxide stream on the reaction rates of the cyclic process. Nickel-catalyzed fired pellets produced by the use of molasses or cement as a binder showed good reactivity as well as high compressive strength during the cyclic tests. The binder amount did not significantly affect the reaction rate.

Casting imperfections, such as porosity, in cast aluminum components greatly influence their fatigue properties. The effect of porosity on the fatigue life of 319-F and A356-T6 aluminum alloys was studied, where the porosity characteristics on the fracture surfaces of fatigue-tested samples were examined using SEM and image analysis. The results show that porosity has the most detrimental effect on the fatigue life: 92 % of all tested samples fractured due to porosity acting as the main crack initiation site. In the absence of casting imperfections, other microstructural aspects such as slip bands can be responsible ( 4 % ). The porosity was investigated in terms of the pore size at the sample fracture surface and its location i.e. near the edge or close to the interior. It was found that porosity located far from the sample surface (edge) has less influence on the fatigue crack initiation, and the fatigue life decreases as the size of the pore located at the sample surface increases. "A three-dimensional finite-element heat-transfer model is conducted to predict temperature of hot copper plate in a slab continuous casting mold and the effect of casting speed on temperature difference between copper plate and solidifying shell is simulated in combination with process data. The results show that centre temperature of hot copper surface at casting speed 1.8 m·min-1 and 2.0 m·min-1 are higher than that of 1.6 m·min-1 casting speed 4.7-5.2 °C and 11.2-12.2 °C respectively and temperature is not increased linearly with casting speed. Temperature difference in meniscus between mold and shell is influenced obviously by casting speed and increased 4.0- 6.0 °C with increment of casting speed 0.2 m·min-1• Fluctuation of temperature difference in meniscus is a main reason to deteriorate casting quality as increasing casting speed.IntroductionIn conventional continuous casting of steel, a large amount of sensible and latent heat of molten steel dissipates in primary cooling zone and mold becomes a critical component of caster to govern steel quality, meanwhile, thermal load on mold is increased constantly and environment is also more abominable since high productivity and quality are required and high-effective technologies are applied. So, an in-depth understanding of thermal behavior of mold at high casting speed is essential to design cooling structure and maintain casting stability. Many studies have been carried out to shed light on thermal behavior in mold. Chow et al. [l] applied a mathematical model to heat transfer in billet mold at a high casting speed to give a new taper in order to minimize mold-strand interaction. Thomas et al. [2] researched relation between mold geometry and temperature distribution based on a finite-element heat-transfer model. Lu et al. [3] indicated that slab mold temperature are mainly affected by thickness of copper plate and nickel layer by a heat transfer model. Samarasekera et al. [4, 5] researched temperature of copper plates for both billet and slab molds and effect of a large number of factors ranging from water quality to casting speed. Park and Thomas et al. [6, 7] developed a finite-element thermal-stress model to determine temperature and thermal distortion and stress in both thin and slab molds and O'Connor et al. [8] applied an elastic-plastic-creep finite-element model in a funnel shaped mold to achieve same goals. Cicutti et al. [9] evaluated heat transfer and temperature fluctuation in a slab mold and proposed an expression to predict global heat flux as a function of process parameters and an index to quantify thermal instability. All mentioned above shown that thermal behavior is not only important to casting stability, it is also premise to further understand mechanical behavior in mold."

Four catalytic converters for diesel exhaust systems were tested to determine their effectiveness in reducing the amount of harmful substances discharged into the air. Tests were conducted with four different catalytic converter designs, using two diesel engines as exhaust gas generators. (Of the four noble metal catalytic converters, three are commercially available.) Testing showed that the catalysts varied widely in oxidation efficiency at light to intermediate engine loads, but that all were very effective in reducing emissions of CO, HC, aldehydes, and odor intensity at heavy loads (engine operating modes resulting in high exhaust temperatures). Particulate loading, particulate size, and NOx emissions were generally unaffected by any of the catalysts. The catalysts had one ad-verse effect on exhaust quality--increased sulfate emissions. Because of the potential problem of sulfate emissions, the exclusive use of catalytic reactors for emissions reduction does not appear to be satisfactory. However, when used with a means for subsequent removal of sulfates, a catalyst can function as a key component in an emissions control system for diesel engines operated in underground mines.

Rest potential and linear potential sweep techniques were used to study the cathodic-polarization processes on chalcopyrite, simulating chalcopyrite short-circuited with grinding media in a wet grinding mill. Microflotation tests were carried out to investigate the effect of cathodic polarization on the collectorless flotation of chalcopyrite. It was observed that collectorless flotation of a cathodically polarized chalcopyrite sample could he obtained when oxygen was used for aeration, but not if nitrogen was used. A mechanism for the role that oxygen plays in the collectorless flotation of cathodically polarized chalcopyrite is discussed.

Rest potential, cyclic voltammetry and chronopotentiometry measurements were made to study the effects of cathodic polarization of chalcopyrite, simulating the mineral contacted with grinding media under a nitrogen atmosphere. The reaction products on the chalcopyrite surface were identified by XPS, and the mechanism of the cathodic reaction was proposed. Microflotation tests were performed to investigate the effects of surface changes on the floatability of chalcopyrite.

Thiosulfate leaching has been considered as the most promising alternative to cyanidation for the recovery of gold from ores. The chemistry of the ammonia-thiosulfate-copper system is complicated due to the simultaneous presence of complexing ligands such as ammonia and thiosulfate, the Cu(II)-CU(I) redox couple and the stability of thiosulfate in solution. However, acceptable gold leaching rates can be achieved by maintaining suitable concentrations of thiosulfate, ammonia, cop-per and oxygen in the leach solution. The leaching of gold in thiosulfate solution is an electrochemical reaction involving the oxidation of gold to gold thiosulfate and the reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I). Previous studies have shown that the reaction rate of gold was much higher in the presence of am-monia thiosulfate than corresponding sodium thiosulfate. This indicates that cations may affect the anodic oxidation of gold in thiosulfate solution. The present study utilises electrochemical tech-niques to study the anodic oxidation of gold in thiosulfate medium in the presence of the different alkali metal and alkaline earth metal ions. It has been shown that the presence of the heavier cations such as potassium, calcium, and caesium enhance the oxidation of gold in thiosulfate solution. Leaching tests also indicated the improved recovery of gold from a sulfide ore with the addition of heavier cations. XPS results demonstrated that the binding energy for gold shifted to lower values in the presence of the heavier cations, indicating the ready formation of ion-pair with gold thiosulfate at the gold surface during adsorption.

Bentonite clay is used as a binder for iron ore concentrate pelletization. Bentonites are sensitive to cations such as calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium that are known to be dissolved in the moisture remaining in the iron ore concentrate. These cations affect the ability of bentonite to absorb water, as measured by the plate water absorbance (PWA) test. This paper addresses the relationships between plant water chemistry and pellet strength for a wide PWA range of bentonites. Experiments were conducted to determine the effect of concentrate moisture solute chemistry and bentonite PWA value on the wet knock and wet and dry compressive strengths of iron ore pellets. Experiments used seven different types of bentonite that had PWA values ranging from 564 to 1033. Flushing plant concentrate with distilled water to remove the dissolved cations resulted in increased pellet strengths, to a widely varying degree, for each bentonite tested; wet knock values increased an average of 92% and dry compressive strength increased an average of 46%. In addition, pellet strengths were not found to be directly related to the ability of bentonite to absorb distilled water, measured by the PWA test.

Yilgam Star treats a gold bearing ore which has an association with pyrohotite and pentlandite (Fe,Ni)9S8 Nickel behaves similar to gold in cyanide solution, it leaches in cyanide to form a number of species. It adsorbs like the noble metals on carbon. During smelting Nickel causes significant problems in the crucible as the melting point of nickel is much higher (1452 °C) than gold (1040 CC). The crucible became overheated, holed and increases furnace downtime. To overcome such dif­ficulties an investigation was carried out to reduce the amount of nickel on steel wool during stripping. Yilgam Star has got I.P.S. high pressure zadra stripping system which works on 400 kpa, at 140 °C. The trend of gold and nickel profiles has been observed with varying caustic concentrations. The gold and nickel profile has been monitored with the addition of cyanide in the stripping liquor. It has been ascertained that at lower caustic levels the nickel ion remains in solution and is subsequently not electro­won. The cyanide concentration of0.4% (Wt/Vol) keeps nickel ion in solution and induces metallic nickel to produce nickel ion as NiCN.

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of an eventual slab central macro-segregation in microalloyed steels with low Mn content (0.80%) and high Nb content (0.08 to 0.10%) on the kinetics of recrystallization of austenite during its rolling, on its critical temperatures, that is, of non-recrystallization (Tnr), start Ar3 and finish Ar1 of ferrite transformation and its response to a simulated industrial thermomechanical processing. The determination of the austenite recrystallization kinetics was made through isothermal double compression tests using a dilatometer, while the critical temperatures were determined through hot torsion tests in a Gleeble® 3800. It was found that austenite recrystallization kinetics, Ar3 and Ar1 temperatures did not present significant changes for the samples extracted both at ¼ of the thickness and at the core of the plate, indicating that, as expected, the central segregation in this type of steel was not intense to the point of affecting this phenomenon. The Tnr values determined for the samples extracted in the core of the plate were, on average, 30°C lower than those obtained from specimens extracted at ¼ thickness, which suggests that a significant portion of the carbonitrides present in the core of the slab are eutectic and coarse, not having completely dissolved during the reheating of the specimens. This occurred despite the fact that the austenitization temperature adopted in this treatment theoretically leads to the total dissolution of Nb, as seems to have occurred in the case of specimens extracted at ¼ of thickness, where carbonitrides have a finer size.

"The mechanical properties of cast iron depend on the graphite morphology and characteristics of metallic matrix. In spheroidal graphite iron these properties are affected by the nodule count, nodule percentage, nodularity, nodules per square mm, nodule types and size distribution. In this work an attempt is made to study of the effect of centrifugal and gravity casting process on the morphology and mechanical properties. A comparison of microstructure and mechanical properties of specimens of the cast are studied. It has been observed that the centrifugal effect produces an increase in rupture strain but hardness is unaffected. In microstructure it has been observed that the centrifugal effect produces an increase in the number of bigger nodules and decrease in the number of smaller nodules and an increase of nodules per square mm. It has no effect on nodularity percentage. The centrifugal casting process produces better mechanical properties.IntroductionCast iron, the first man-made composite, is at least 2500 years old. It remains the most important casting material, with over 70% of the total world tonnage [1,7]. The main reasons for cast irons longevity are its wide range of mechanical and physical properties coupled with its competitive price [l]. Gray cast iron is traditionally used in many industries because it is characterized by a flexibility of use, excellent castability, low cost, wide range of achievable mechanical properties. Gray cast irons are selected according to their tensile strength, high modulus of elasticity, good wear resistance and good machinability are desired and for this a high-strength cast iron is selected [2].Flake Graphite and Spheroidal Graphite irons are predominantly being used to manufacture heavy automobile components throughout the world. The properties of gray iron castings are much dependent on foundry practice. Perhaps the most interesting feature of the family of cast irons is the morphology of the graphite phase, which occurs as a result of changes in chemical composition, melting, melt handling techniques and the process of solidification and subsequent cooling. The significance of these differences through graphite morphology is observed primarily in their effect on the physical and mechanical properties of the iron, but in the foundries these are also known to influence the ability to manufacture sound and dependable castings."

After the formation of a concentration gradient of SiC within C-C composite, either zircon or mullite thin films were coated on the surface by sol-gel process. Oxidation resistance tests of as-prepared composites with a couple consisting of a ceramic thin film and a SiC-gradient were then carried out in air at the temperature range from 600 to 1600°C. By the coating of zircon with a thickness of 1.5 µm, a pronounced oxidation resistance was observed; the mass loss by oxidation was almost negligible at 1000°C and one hundredth of original composite at 1400°C. In the case of the coating of mullite with a thickness of 1.0 pm, the marked improvement in oxidation resistance over the whole temperature range examined, from 600 to 1600°C, was found with the combination of a SiC-gradient and a mullite thin film

For the past century, the so-called aluminum bronzes have been assuming a role of ever-increasing importance in the metallurgical field. The last quarter of that century has marked many efforts to find alloying elements that would alleviate some of the undesirable qualities of the aluminum bronzes-for example, the heterogeneity of the alpha solid solution and the extreme hardness of the beta. Much of this work, however, has been rather haphazard-compositions and heat treatment are usually so much at variance as to make comparison impossible. It is the object of this research to study the effect of certain percentages of common alloying elements on aluminum bronzes of analogous compositions and heat treatments. It is hoped that the material gathered here will at least serve as a basis for further systematic study.

THE elements silver, cadmium, tin, antimony and tellurium either are found as impurities in commercial coppers or are intentionally added to produce coppers for special uses, When present in small quantities, each of these metals exerts a significant effect on the properties of copper, but despite considerable experience and investigation much remains to be learned about their specific behavior. The presence of extraneous elements, particularly oxygen, complicates the study of individual additions of impurities in the range 0 to 0.05 per cent, and the use of high-purity copper has been found extremely helpful in circumventing these difficulties. It has also been found that individual behavior can be satisfactorily determined from measurements of two commercially important properties, conductivity and softening temperature, according to methods that have been described previously.1,2 Data of this type, obtained in the course of a general investigation of the effects of impurities on the properties of both oxygen-bearing and oxygen-free copper are presented herewith. All samples except those containing cadmium were prepared as 3/8-in. continuously cast oxygen-free rod from pure copper and weighed amounts of a similarly synthesized master alloy. Composition was checked by chemical methods, which in every case verified the calculated analyses. Test wires were cold-drawn one B. and S. number per pass on a string-up machine using four 30-min. 600°C. anneals at 0.3125, 0.257, 0.204 and 0.162 in. and a final cold reduction of 75 per cent to 0.081 in. Some oxygen-bearing samples were produced directly from the 3/8-in. oxygen-free rods by diffusion from a surface scale at 850°C. and drawn to size as listed above, but most of the alloys were remelted in pure graphite and cast through air into a I-in. round mold, The slugs were then hot-rolled to 5/16 in., drawn to 0.162 in., annealed as listed above, and drawn to 0.081 inch. Conductivity wires were annealed for I hr. at 100°C. intervals between 300° and 800°F., using a hydrogen atmosphere for oxygen-free samples and purified nitrogen for the oxygen-bearing type, All samples were quenched from the annealing temperature in 10 per cent H2SO4 and conductivity was measured on a Hoopes bridge that had been checked against a Kelvin bridge. Bentonite is an important industrial mineral with very wide application areas. Its unique colloidal, swelling, thickening and adsorption properties make it a useful agent in drilling, metal casting, and iron ore pelletizing, environmental, food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and many more industries. Because of its swelling property, bentonite suspensions can only be prepared at rather low solid coentrations, i.e. 8-10%. In order to process bentonite in slurries with high solid content, it was thought that a non-polar organic solvent, instead of water, can be used. Not only large amounts of bentonite can be dispersed in organic solvents but also the solvents may be regenerated. The bentonite obtained through such a process must either equal or better properties than those of untreated bentonite. In this study, the effect of organic solvents such as acetone, methyl-ethyl ketone and n-haxane on the main properties of bentonite, such as water adsorption and rheology, was investigated.
