MUCH of White Pine's success is due to the mechanization of mining operations and the development of an efficient beneficiation process to extract usable copper from the low-grade ore (averaging slightly more than 1 pct copper content). When the mine was first opened, all ore was trucked to a conveyor system installed in the slope leading out of the mine. But as new mining areas have been opened up at increasing distances from the slope, conveyors have replaced the trucks for much of the haulage. This conveyor program is expected to continue as mining progresses. Here is how the present underground system functions: Run-of-mine ore is dumped into two truck hoppers and withdrawn from the bottom of each hopper by a 60-in. apron feeder 22 ft long (see diagram). Collecting conveyors 54 in. wide and 44 ft long receive the material from the apron feeders and discharge to two main-line 54-in. conveyors, one 2000 ft and the other 2600 ft long. Operating at 312 fpm and handling 1200 tph, the main-line conveyors converge near the bottom of the tunnel leading out of the mine and discharge into two 72x168-in. Vibrex screens. Ore under 8 in. goes directly to the bin beneath. The oversize is fed to two 32x40-in. jaw crushers and after crushing joins the 8-in. material in the bin.

It has been well accepted for many decades that hard starting of conveyors has associated problems. It is particularity damaging to the belt and splices. Recent measurements of hard starts on a long conveyor with a low modulus belt showed very unusual responses. These included violent accelerations and repeated "whip cracking" of the belt. Laboratory investigations of the very high strain rates experienced by the belt during the whip cracking, show mechanisms for belt damage that are not associated with normal usage. This paper outlines the measurement to show that for long, low modulus conveyors, constant torque controls are inappropriate and time ramp controls are really essential.

The Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association (CEMA) specification B105.1 “Welded Steel Conveyor Pulleys” adequately defines standard pulleys for most aggregate material handling applications. However, many aggregate applications demand pulleys of higher capacity and reliability than that offered by CEMA pulleys. This paper examines the CEMA Pulley Standard and pulley specifications for aggregate applications requiring greater capacity and reliability than the CEMA Pulley Standard. Higher reliability increases the uptime and has a lower total cost of ownership.

The Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association (CEMA) specification B105.1 "Welded Steel Conveyor Pulleys" adequately defines pulley assembly standards for light material handling applications. However, most mining applications demand pulleys of higher reliability and load capacity than that offered by CEMA standard pulleys. Various sources have published specifications for "Engineered" conveyor pulleys. Typically, these specifications require T-section type pulleys applicable to operating belt tensions exceeding 439 N/mm (2,500 lb./in.). This paper examines the application of CEMA standard pulleys, T-section pulleys and also a mining duty pulley design. The mining duty pulley fills the void between CEMA standard pulleys and T-section pulleys and can eliminate the high cost and long lead times associated with T-section type pulleys.

This paper discusses the development and application of sophisticated monitoring equipment used to measure the operating parameters of conveyor systems. With the radical reduction in price of computer hard- ware and software during the last decade and an associated increase in memory capacity, the concept of continuous conveyor monitor is now a reality. With this tool, the various problems normally encountered in large conveyor installations can now be avoided at an early stage. • The four main areas of application are: • Design verification • Hand-over certification • Preventative maintenance and increase of system availability Failure analysis The paper introduces the techniques used and gives examples where the service has been used.

The conveyor belt is the basic building block of a broad range of material handling applications in modern mining systems. The mining plans and site conditions dictate basic system requirements but this is only a part of total design evaluation. The total system in the typical mining situation can encompass all the activities from the excavators at the mining face to the processing plant, site loadout facilities and/or a power plant. The number of alternative configurations which must be evaluated including subsystems and components is limited only by analytical time and creativity. The constraints and issues which must be addressed continue to expand, driven by reliability, environmental impact and cost competitiveness. All of the system requirements must be translated into specifications for costing, final design and construction.

"This paper reviews the development of new designs in extensible and high angle conveyor systems. These aim to overcome the limitations of prior alternative concepts in design. The application of such systems in strip, terrace, open pit and mountain mining is reviewed. IntroductionTruck haulage costs have tended to escalate in recent years. This has been primarily due to operations generally moving to greater depths with associated increases in haul distances . Periods of high inflation rates have also been experienced for diesel fuel oil, tires and other petroleum based products. Recent international political events have tended to regenerate concerns over future oil supply and price stability. For such reasons, conveyor based transport is becoming increasingly attractive. Truck haulage maintains an inherent flexibility and improvements continue to be made in performance and capacity. Doubts must exist, however, over the extent to which further economies of scale may be made. Conversely, belt conveyor systems do not suffer this constraint and have the following advantages:• Electrical power is used and the specific energy consumption is at least half that required for truck haulage.• Operating costs and skilled labour requirements are lower.• Equipment has superior longevity and is ""inflation proof"" .• Access roads can be steeper and narrower in most mine environments, reducing construction and maintenance costs.• They are less prone to breakdown and bad weather delays .• In long haul, high capacity operations conveyors can save substantially on capital cost.• Environmental impact is improved with reduced noise level, dust and atmospheric pollution. Although conveyor systems are less flexible in operation than truck haulage and although a breakdown in any part of the system can immobilize the total system, mechanical availabilities of + 80% are constantly reported by large operators. There would appear in the past to have been some prejudice against conveyor systems in hard rock mines due to lack of experience. Apparent reservations would apply equally 10 underground coal mines, yet practically all of these mines (and some underground hard rock mines) find conveyor systems more economical than other transport systems."

FACED with rising costs, the mining industry is looking to new methods and equipment to supply the relief necessary for profitable operation. Conveyor transportation is rapidly taking a superior position to motor tramming in underground mines because of lower installation, maintenance, and operating costs. Haulage is always a critical problem in underground mining. The ease of operation and flexibility of a haulage system can have an important effect on ultimate mining cost. With the average tenor of ores on the downgrade, larger tonnages are required for the same metal recovery. This selection of a tramming system can be the key to a successful, paying plant. Because this shift is being made at an ever advancing rate, it may become necessary to tailor mining operations to the transportation system, rather than to select a haulage system fitting set mining methods. In choosing a haulage system, the relative costs of the various methods are of the greatest importance. Adapting the mine to one or the other type of tramming is not considered in the cost analysis, and very likely would make little difference, outside of location of drifts and raises. In the cost sheet, the problem presents recommendations for a conveyor installation and a comparison of equipment, installation, operation, maintenance, and power costs are made. (San Francisco sleeting, September, 1915) THE accompanying chart has been drawn for the convenience of engineers as a means of quickly determining the correct number of plies of conveyor belts operating under specific conditions. The calculations are based on the average safe strength (factor of safety, 15) of the various standard rubber conveyor belts. The, calculations assume maximum loading conditions; that is, the belt is considered as carrying the greatest load that it will handle without spillage at ordinary belt speeds. This not only produces the most economical operating conditions, but also the maximum tension in the belt. The chart is a graphical representation of the formula: p = kgW (L + 1OH) Where, p = the correct number of plies k = a constant, depending on the type of drive g = the weight in pounds per cubic foot of material handled W = the width of the belt in inches L = the length of the belt in feet (approximately twice the center distance). INTRODUCTION BELT conveyors generally are conceded to be the most economical method yet devised for the transportation of large quantities of bulk materials within plants. Belts are coming into greater use for transportation over long distances and are replacing other forms of long-haul conveyance. It is not the intent of the writer to comment on the design of belt conveyors, but to offer some suggestions for improvement in the operation of conveying belts, based on many years experience with belts in several stonecrushing plants. It is the contention of this writer that opportunities for improvement not fully realized by most operators exist in many plants and that a study of the individual conveyors can result in lower unit belt costs. GENERAL RELIABILITY It is the fool-proof nature and general reliability of the belt conveyor that is responsible for its neglect. Even when abused, a belt will carry large tonnages and last a long time, often outlasting the personnel responsible for its care. Some operators look upon the purchase of a new belt as an expensive outlay every so many years, rather than a constant and steady cost amounting in belt wear alone to several dollars every operating day. This belt wear for all conveyors in one stone-crushing plant known by the writer costs 1 1/2 cents per ton or $12 to $15 per hour, based on the present cost of belt replacements. The fact that these replacement costs are double those of prewar quality emphasizes the necessity of improving the conditions that make belts wear out. Some of those conditions are the responsibility of the conveyor designer, and if a serious original error has been made, this handicap cannot be overcome by the operator. If the belt is too narrow, too steep, or too fast for good loading, the operator finds that he has an inherently expensive belt. The other factors that decrease the life of a belt are more or less under his control. The two factors of most importance are the loading conditions and the alignment. Most of the cover wear and carcass cutting occurs at the loading point and if the alignment is not good under all conditions, edge wear or damage may result, Fig I. LOADING THE BELT It is difficult to load a belt in an ideal manner; that is, to flow the material on the moving belt at a steady rate, without impact, without turbulence, and with a velocity equal to and in the same direction as the belt. An inclined belt is especially difficult to load and particularly when its speed is over 300 or 350 fpm. Inclined conveyors require longer skirt plates to prevent spillage until the load settles. It does not seem reasonable to expect an inclined conveyor to carry the same load as a horizontal belt of the same width and speed, because of the difficulty in loading

To facilitate effective land reclamation and comply with existing state regulations, surface coal mine operators have in recent years adopted new mining techniques and equipment utilization for steep-terrain mining. In contrast to direct spoiling with draglines or shovels, these new mining methods require some form of overburden haulage from the excavation face to the point of reclamation. Although current mining methodologies such as Block-Cut, Modified Block-Cut, and Mountaintop Removal with Head-of-Hollow Fills have proven effective in achieving reclamation objectives, some production problems have resulted from pit congestion and excessive equipment delays. Recognizing this problem, the United States Bureau of Mines contracted Skelly and Loy to design innovative mining concepts utilizing conveyor haulage in place of trucks, loaders, dozers and scrapers. Project objectives required definition of current bottlenecks and development of mining systems to: alleviate bottlenecks; increase production potential; facilitate additional resource recovery; enhance reclamation; reduce safety hazards; and improve mining economics. Successful completion of project goals within a four year program involves systematic implementation of the following separate work phases: 1) Develop Concepts for Block-Cut Mining Systems; 2) Determine the Economic and Technical Feasibility of Concepts; 3) Prepare Detailed Design and Specifications of Concepts; and 4) Prepare Specifications for Conducting Field Tests of the Most Promising Concepts. At the time of this publication, Phases 1 and 2 are finalized with Phase 3 efforts well underway.

The Boddington gold mine is located near Perth in Western Australia in the Saddleback Greenstone Belt, a fault-bounded sliver of Archaean volcanic and shallow level intrusive rocks, surrounded by granitic and gneissic rocks. The mine began operations in 1987, producing about 7.7 t/a (250,000 oz/year) until mining ceased in 2001. Built on the footprint of the original mine, the Boddington gold mine expansion project involved opencut mining from two large pits. Expected gold production is around 31 t/a (1 million oz/year) for the first five years. It will be the largest gold mine in Australia. The mine has proven and probable reserves of more than 622 kt (20 million oz) of gold and has an expected life of more than 24 years. The mine is currently solely owned by Newmont Gold Corp., the world?s second-largest gold mining company, employing around 28,000 people worldwide. The conveyor and belt feeder contract for the Boddington gold mine expansion project was awarded by Aker Kvaerner Clough Murray Roberts (AKCMR) to FLSmidth Conveyor Engineering Inc. in August 2006. The contract involved the design and manufacture of 15 conveyors and 17 belt feeders with belt widths ranging from 450 mm to 2.4 m (18 in. to 96 in.) and conveyor lengths from 16 m to 2,172 m (52 ft to 7,125 ft). The total motor power added up to more than 16,700 kW (22,400 hp). The total length of all belting was almost 11.5 km (7.1 miles), and the total fabricated steel weight was approximately 3.7 kt (4,100 st).

UNTIL recently all discussions directed at justify-ing the use of mechanical-loading equipment and conveyors have referred chiefly to tons per man and cost per ton. But there is another consideration that ? will speed the adoption of mechanical loading in mines even though tons per man on present day stand-ards were not increased nor the cost per ton decreased. With restricted immigration, improved facilities for education in our mining communities, and increased opportunities for recreation, the type of man who can or will throw 20 tons of coal per day over the side of a mine car is disappearing. Whether we will it or not provision must be made to replace muscular effort by mechanical means. Fortunately, indications are that the process will be accompanied by increased output per man and lower production cost, and though the outlook may now be a bit clouded in spots, all should profit by the change. The operator should enjoy a more stable business with more assured profit, the miners should get a better livelihood with less arduous effort and under safer and pleasanter working conditions, and the consumer should gain the assurance of a supply of coal always available at reasonable prices. That sounds like the millennium in the coal business perhaps. Of course, it is not, but there is just enough of that millennium stuff in it to encourage those of us who are working with today's problems of applying loading and conveying equipment to underground opera-tions. If we discern clearly that there can be no back-sliding, and that all will share in whatever advantages accrue, we will carry on more vigorously, and may right-fully expect to have the necessary cooperation of all the elements within the industry. As nature does not seem to have followed a definite plan in the formation of coal deposits it is not likely that any one standard method or type of equipment can be evolved for mining the coal. The method of mining that maybe most advantageously employed with load-ing machines and conveyors depends on the character of the strata overlying the coal as much as anything else.

In many ways, conveyors are the lifeline of mining and processing operations. Like arteries in the human body, they continuously supply materials to and carry finished products and waste away from vital on-going operations. And like arteries, when the conveyors are running with less than maximum efficiency and productivity, it spells serious trouble for the operation's overall health. Inefficient conveyors suffer carryback, leading to the build-up of materials on idlers and other expensive components. They spill and leak material at loading zones and conveyor transfer points, causing accumulations that can damage the belt, wear moving components, and increase both clean-up labor and maintenance expense. They wander or mistrack, spilling material and endangering personnel and conveyor components including the belt itself. And through these inefficiencies, they multiply the operation's hidden costs. These added expenses are created in lost production, increased downtime for service and maintenance, and the cost of the replacement of prematurely worn equipment. In addition, the attitude that inefficiency is "good enough" is recognized elsewhere in the organization; as a result, other departments relax or operate at less than peak performance. Quality goes down and with it employee morale.

Chromite ores have a long history of low pricing and for AustraliaÆs only chromite mine this has been a particularly tough challenge, especially as the mine is located nearly 400 km from the nearest port at Port Hedland. A stockpile of chromite fines (-16 mm) has been built up since 2003. The opportunity to develop a facility to treat this material to produce a chip (-16 + 1 mm) product and a sands (-1 mm + 45 micron) product was taken when the price increased to above US$140/t. A simple add-on plant containing a heavy media cyclone circuit for the chips and a spiral circuit for the sands was designed and developed. During construction of the fines plant the price of chromite reached a level where the payback for the entire project was less than eight weeks. Soon afterwards the price and the demand for chromite plummeted and the site was put on care and maintenance, except for the commissioning of the fines plant. This put considerable pressure on whether to continue to operate the plant or to place it in care and maintenance. Times of boom and bust provide management with almost totally opposite views. By not taking a conservative view on prices and costs, the effect of extremely low prices and minimal demand can be devastating to a good project. Designing and building plants with conservative costings in boom times gives a greater chance of keeping projects alive during the bust periods that tend to follow.

At Newmont’s Jundee Operation, exploration and resource geologists collaborated to produce an open pit resource model. Using a variety of modelling and estimation techniques but no new data, an uneconomic underground target was converted into a potentially economic open pit evaluation. During an industry downturn, it is more important than ever to efficiently share expertise, ideas and resources to problem solve and produce meaningful project outcomes. The two departments brought together different methods and ideas, and the process showed that certain methods worked better than others in different situations, thus the appropriate method was applied to each part of the evaluation. The results were used to create new procedures and improved lithology modelling and resource model estimations. Adaptability of the geology departments and collaboration such as this are key to ongoing improvements and future mine life at Jundee.CITATION:Dudgeon, K, Paradis, J and Topping, M, 2014. Introduction Coal is the US's largest indigenous fossil fuel resource and is used to power 57% of this country's electrical generation (NCA, 1986). Congress, however, is focusing its attention on the acid rain issue and public sentiment is leaning toward further curtailments of SO2, NO, and particulates from utility and industrial coal-burning facilities. The Cool Water plant has proven that integrated-gasification-combined-cycle (IGCC) technology can reliably produce economical electrical power while limiting SO2, NOx, and particulates to a rate of only one-tenth of the federal New Source Performance Standards for coal-fired plants. Process water requirements at Cool Water are 40% less than those of a conventional coal-fired utility plant equipped with flue-gas desulfurization units for stack gas scrubbing, thus reducing waste water treatment requirements (Clark and Shorter, 1985). The IGCC technology employed at Cool Water has now been demonstrated to efficiently convert coal to electricity in an environmentally superior fashion. The Cool Water Coal Gasification Program is an unincorporated California association of six partners whose commitment is proving that the integration of gasification with combined cycle power production (IGCC) is commercially viable and environmentally safe. The 120 MW Cool Water plant began commercial production on June 24, 1984. The Program is operating it for a five-year commercial demonstration period. During the last decade, diesel engine manufacturers focused their research efforts on higher efficiencies and horsepower-to-weight ratios. The result was horsepower increases of between 20% and 30%. At the same time, coolant volume decreased by about the same amount. This has made coolant maintenance more important to ensure a long life for the engine and its cooling system. Due to dilution and additive depletion, supplemental conditioners are usually added to the coolant system during an oil change. Dilution occurs when coolant leaks from the system, and water or non-conditioned antifreeze is added. Depletion is a more complicated process that involves oxidation, neutralization, precipitation and metal surface reactions.

This presentation is to outline the current practice of mechanised stoping a one-metre wide, gold bearing ore body to optimise fragmentation, minimise dilution and reduce stoping costs.Coolgardie underground operations have historically been mined using traditional shrink stope methods, but in this recent economic environment (with falling gold prices and high costs of traditional methods) it was necessary to look for alternative methods in order to reduce costs and increase productivity.Although still in a learning and refinement phase, CGNL is satisfied that it is feasible, practical and more economic to use mechanised long up-hole stope and long-hole rising methods to significantly reduce the mining cost, reduce dilution, increase safety and increase productivity three-fold compared to traditional airleg methods used throughout the Fasten Goldfields.

THE process of cooling air by allowing it to expand and do work in an engine is well known, but the theory of obtaining cold air by free expansion without the aid of an engine operating with cutoff has been little discussed. CASE I If compressed air is allowed to expand to the atmospheric pressure through an orifice in an air line that is supplied by a running compressor, no cooling results except the negligible one due to the Joule-Thompson effect, which will not be considered in this discussion. The effect of moisture will also be neglected.
