INTRODUCTION For many years, in Europe and in North America, pre-formed metallic and concrete segmental linings in tunnels have been used extensively as temporary and permanent ground support systems. In the United Kingdom the use of cast iron as a means of ground support in mining shafts dates from the first decade of the 19th century. Although at that time wood tubbing was extensively employed, cast iron was used in shafts at Wallsend and Percy Main collieries in the North East of England. The original form of cast iron tubbing consisted of cylinders which were lowered bodily into the pit and were built from the bottom up, but subsequently they were subdivided into segments which involved the making of vertical as well as horizontal joints. Principally, the practice of providing immediate pre-formed support developed because of the incompetent state of the surrounding ground and, although this still remains the over-riding consideration nowadays, several other factors are examined before finally deciding what type of lining to use. Other branches of sub-terranean technology such as tunnel thrusting or immersed tubes (both of which involve pre-formed linings) can provide alternative solutions to problems hitherto thought better solved by bored tunnelling methods. However, this paper will confine itself to those linings developed for the more traditional tunnelling methods. Usually the shape of segmentally lined tunnels is circular because this profile is the most suitable for bad ground and many tunnelling machines. Cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts are one type of the two oxidic metallic mineral resources in the deep ocean that incorporate metals supplied and transported from both land (aerosols, continental run-off) and sea sources (oxygen-minimum zone, hydrothermal alteration of the oceanic crust). The substances directly precipitate from cold seawater under more or less oxic conditions and form thin layers (2 up to 25 cm thick) on hard substrate rocks like volcanic hyaloclastites, weathered basaltic rocks and/or carbonate-fluorapatite; in the crusts many metals therefore exist in the highest state of oxidation. Deposits of the Co-rich ferromanganese crusts are found throughout the global oceans on the flanks, terraces and summits of seamounts and submerged volcanic mountain ranges and platforms, where the ocean currents have kept the seafloor more or less free of sediment for millions of years. The process of hydrogenetic precipitation is basically an inorganic colloidal-chemical and surface-chemical mechanism. Elements in seawater may occur as dissolved hydrated ions or as inorganic as well as organic complexes which in general have either a positive or a negative surface charge depending on the pH of the respective aqueous environment. Those complexes may form hydrated colloids that interact with each other and with other dissolved hydrous metal ions. Hydrated cations such as Co, Ni, Zn, Sn are, for example, attracted by the negatively charged surfaces of colloidal hydrous Mn-oxide particles, whereas hydrated anions (e.g. oxyanions) and elements forming larger complexes with low-charge densities (e.g. U, As, Th, Hf, REE) are attracted by the slightly positively charged hydrous Fe oxihydroxide particles.

Building aggregates, basic materials for the construction industry, must be produced according to socio-economic and environmental sustainability principles, i.e. the three fundamental components of Sustainable Development. On this subject, an introductory discussion about the interpretation of these concepts in the field of mineral production and construction industry is first presented. As for the socio-economic aspect, aggregates are then illustrated as being essential resources for the development of the society, underlying that it is possible to understand their fundamental socio-economic role only through the analysis of the whole product life cycle, from production to end use and beyond. The same has to be done on the environmental side to assess the environmental impacts of aggregates: one should look for, not in the quarry phase only, but also in all the downstream activities of the construction process, including the use phase and beyond. Based on this approach, in the second part of the paper, the results of some investigations focused on eco-profiles of building aggregates, gathered through the application of LCA methodology are presented and discussed. In such a context, strengths and weaknesses of LCA indicators will be discussed, as well.

The critical surface tension of wetting (?c) of Cu2S, FeS2, PbS, and MoS2 were determined by plotting flotation recovery versus YLV which was arranged by methanol, and Extra-polating to % R = 0. ?c values ranged from 26 dyne cm-1 for MoS2 to 49 dyne cm-1 for PbS and elemental sulfur gave a value of 31.5 dyne cm-1. Minerals exhibiting natural flotability of different extents, could be separated from their mixtures in the absence of conventional flotation reagents, but controlled ?LV. Correlations between non-stoichiometry and degree of natural hydrophobicity for MOS2 are also reported in this paper.

After many significant advances in mining including development of sophisticated methods for strata characterization and numerical modeling analyses, the engineering design process in mining is as primitive as it was two decades ago. Yet, major advances in design methodologies have occurred in other branches of engineering. Is creative design in mining a myth only? Are we deluding ourselves when we talk about innovative mining design of today? What is the reality of the situation? This paper explores the methodology of creative engineering design as a new recognized discipline. It warrants applications in mining since design experts are sometimes unaware of their own decision-making processes.

Olivine is a name of a mineral group that has a chemical formula of: (Mg, Fe), SiO4. The most important rock for the olivine group minerals is dunite, which can contain olivine up to 95-99%. Dunite can be obtained from chrome enrichment as a by-product. As a result of alteration of the olivine group minerals, several kinds of different minerals can occur. Main consumption areas of olivine are steel and iron industry. Also olivine is used in not only casting and refractory industries but also production of radiator, ballast material and abrasive. North of Bursa-Orhaneli has got more than 5 billion tons reserves in ultrabasic massifs. M.T.A found that olivine has got high quality of using in refractory and casting industry.

Considerable success has been achieved in recent years in reducing concentrations of respirable dust in UK coalmines; thankfully this has been reflected in significant improvements in pneumoconiosis statistics. However, continuous increases in mechanisation and in rates of working, accompanied by more stringent dust regulations, necessitate the introduction of improved and often more sophisticated methods of dust control. The increased application of exhaust ventilation and air cleaning techniques seems likely to be the most important step forward in dust control in coalmining during the next few years. A typical drivage in a UK mine is not more than 16 ft (5 m) wide and is supported by steel arches. In the past the majority of such roadways were driven by the conventional means of blasting and loading. Since the main purpose of ventilation was to clear blasting fumes and to provide adequate scouring of firedamp, not surprisingly it was usual to have 'forcing' ventilation. Present systems of operation are making increasing use of heading machines and it is not surprising that well over half of all drivages are now ventilated by exhausting methods. (1) The great majority of coal getting in the UK is from longwall faces, usually in seams of less than 6 ft (1.8 m) thickness. Although this method of min¬ing has many advantages in terms of safety and productivity, dust control is made more difficult because of the need for men and machines to work in the same ventilation stream. Much emphasis has been placed on improving the design and methods of opera¬tion of longwall machines to reduce dust production, and improved ventilation has provided greater dilution, and in consequence, reductions in dust concentration. On all machines water is now fed through internal galleries to the cutting elements. Unfortunately, one of the difficulties associated with mining thin seams is that there is some unavoidable cutting in the roof or floor and in many seams there are faults to be traversed and dirt bands which must be removed with the coal. Under these conditions it appears that the use of exhaust ventilation and air cleaning offers the most promising way of achieving satisfactory dust conditions.

The mining/mineral processing industry constantly faces the challenges of handling tons of material in a variety of processes such as crushing, milling, drying, belt transfer and loadout. These processes result in the production of high volumes of dust. A variety of dust detection and collection equipment is needed to properly manage these emissions to remain compliant with stringent air quality and safety requirements. Dust monitoring and bag leak detection can provide ways to reduce air pollutants, make work environments safer and remain compliant with requirements from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). There are several approaches to monitoring particulate emissions from dust collection equipment. These can include visual inspections, differential pressure gauges or bag leak detection systems. Bag leak detection and monitoring systems can be optical, light based or electrostatic/triboelectric. Recent developments have advanced the efficiency and reliability of electrostatic/triboelectric style monitors. New technological improvements have been developed that are based upon the principal of unifying dc (impaction) and ac (induction) signals and incorporating other proprietary circuit innovations. This higher signal resolution technology results in a more robust and stable measurement for detecting the presence of particulate in a dust collector emission duct or a flow process pipe.

A hydraulic rock breaker was developed in Germany by Helmut Darda and uses a wedge-plug and feathers mechanism powered by a 10,000 p.s.i. power pack. During the past four years these tools have been increasingly used all over North America for secondary breaking of boulders and rock. More recently, techniques have been developed to break rock off the solid in trenches and rock emplacements where blasting is pro¬hibited or very limited. Underground operations are commencing to adopt the splitter for scaling plus including systems which can be efficiently applied to chambers and mines. Mr. Neil Duncan, who was originally scheduled to give the main part of this presentation has, during this past month accepted a position with the Alberta Energy Resources Conservation Board in Calgary. The board encourages its members to take part in seminars such as this but, unfortunately, due to the heavy pressure of work, it was impossible for him to attend this conference. Mr. Duncan has, however, forwarded me his notes and suggest¬ions, and using these, combined with a slide presentation, we feel that we can quickly and clearly define the operations and application of the hydraulic splitting technique as it applies to your profession and tunnelling work. The first question that most of you are asking is, "Why use a hydraulic splitter if you can blast?" In the late1970s, mineral processing plants producing copper sulfide concentrates and oxide leaching feedstocks went online with operating tonnages that exceeded traditional installations. This created a need for larger capacity belt conveyors and apron feeders. Apron feeders are slow moving, heavily loaded conveyors that feed a deep bed of ore from a bulk holding location (a bunker) as a controlled stream, often into a large capacity crusher. Apron feeders use sprockets and caterpillars, while belt feeders use rubber belts with motorized head pulleys to convey the material. The damaging of belts and clogging of transfer points from tramp iron required larger magnetic separators and the removal of tramp metal cannot prevent these serious problems. Corrective action at this location is important for two reasons: Removing tramp iron early in the ore stream protects downstream equipment from potential costly damage. Installing apron feeder magnets before the primary large capacity crusher means that secondary and tertiary crushing steps (made up of multiple parallel units) operate more efficiently, since tramp metal is removed at the onset.

Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited, one of the world's largest iron ore producers, operates a 3.0 million tonne per year pelletizing facility at Dampier in Western Australia. The plant produces pellets for the export market using a blend of natural hematite fines from the Company's two mines at Tom Price and Paraburdoo. Processing includes fluidised-bed drying of the ore feed, open circuit dry grinding, disc balling and pellet induration in a travelling grate furnace of Dravo-Lurgi design.

Introduction The Carlin Trend is North America's premier gold producing district. It is located in northeastern Nevada's Elko and Eureka Counties along a northwest trending belt about 65 km (40 miles) long and 8 km (5 miles) wide (Thorstad, 1989; Jones, 1989). This trend is the worldwide reference site for epithermal, sedimentary rock-hosted microscopic gold deposits. At least 19 deposits have been discovered to date, varying in size from 933 kg to 1.08 kt (30,000 to 35 million contained oz) of gold (Fig. 1). Newmont Gold Co. and its parent, Newmont Mining Corp., jointly constitute the largest mineral right holders in the district. They own or control more than 1000 km' (386 sq miles) in and around the Carlin Trend and own all or part of I6out of the 19 mines and prospects identified to date. Since the initiation of Newmont's exploration activities in the Carlin Trend in 1961, 2.24 kt (72 million oz) of cumulative gold resources have been identified. Cumulative production from all mines since the start-up of Newmont's Carlin mine in 1965 to the end of 1989 was about 202 t (6.5 million oz) (Jones, 1989). The incentive of sustained high gold prices and innovation in processing technology resulted in a significant acceleration of gold output over the last few years. Newmont Gold alone produced more than 43.5 t (1.4 million oz) in 1989. That is equal to 22% of the cumulative 1965 to 1988 output, and an almost 200% increase over its 1986 output. The same incentives produced even more spectacular exploration results. In each of the last five years, net additions to reserves and resources outpaced current production by substantial margins. These facts demonstrate the spectacular past prospectiveness of the Carlin Trend and the success of focused, multi-disciplinary exploration methods that made it possible to more than offset the recent accelerated depletion of gold resources. However, is this situation sustainable? How long can the mining companies along the Carlin Trend keep on finding resources faster than they deplete them? These are some of the questions that motivated this study. The authors have not quantified the future potential for gold exploration in the Carlin Trend nor established a deposit discovery path. But strong indications were discovered that the [ ] Carlin Trend remains a relatively immature exploration district and that the potential for significant new discoveries is high. Methodology and data The approach chosen to address the above questions was simple. The authors compiled deposit size data, measured in contained ounces of gold resources, for all known deposits along the Carlin Trend (Table 1). The resource information was obtained by adding cumulative historical production (adjusted for mining losses and metallurgical recovery) to 1989 year-end published resource inventories. In a mature exploration area, where most deposits have been discovered, this distribution would be expected to approximate lognormality and would plot along a straight line on a lognormal probability scale. This result was found in previous work by Allais (1957) and recently confirmed by Cox and Singer (USGS, 1986) in regard to various types of mineral deposits in several regions of the world. It was also found to hold true for oil and gas pool size distributions (Arps and Roberts, 1958; Kaufman, 1962; McCrossan, 1969). [ ] The data used were compiled by Newmont Exploration geologists. The purpose of the study is to make inferences about the underlying geologic processes in the district and the maturity of the exploration effort. Therefore, deposits were not classified according to ownership but according to geologic occurrence as known from current information. Newmont's Post and Barrick's Goldstrike and Betze deposits, for example, are shown as a single occurrence to reflect the actual geologic setting. The cumulative frequency distribution of deposit sizes was plotted on lognormal probability paper (Fig. 2). The abscissa shows the cumulative fraction of deposits at or below a certain deposit size and the ordinate shows the deposit size in thousands of ounces of contained gold resources.

Prior to 1971, there were several clinical trials to evaluate programs for early detection of lung cancer. Among these, the Philadelphia Pulmonary Neoplasm Research Project,(3) the Veterans Administration Study published by Lilienfeld,(7) and the controlled trial of the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan showed an overall five year survival rate of 8% for newly detected cases (the same as the national statistic for unscreened patients). In 1971, the National Cancer Institute initiated three randomized, controlled mortality studies using lung cancer screening of persons at high risk (male smokers over 45 years old). The studies are being conducted at the Johns Hopkins University Hospital, the Mayo Clinic, and the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. The studies have slightly different designs in the combination of sputum cytology and chest x-rays. At the Mayo Clinic the study group is offered screening with sputum cytology and chest x-rays every four months, whereas the control group is advised to have an x-ray and cytology every year. No reminders are sent, and it is believed that only about 20% of the control group is screened. At Johns Hopkins and Memorial, both experimental and control groups are offered annual chest x-rays. The experimental group is additionally offered sputum cytology every four months.(5) At present all of the programs show that screening can detect cancers that are undetectible by other means. However, at this time mortality rates in the control and experimental groups are not significantly different in any of the three studies. OUR PROGRAM Our clinic is located in Grants, New Mexico and we provide most of the pre-employment physical examinations for the mines operating in the Grants area (Kerr McGee Nuclear, Homestake Mining, United Nuclear, Western Nuclear, and Ranchers). In the examinations, we obtain the previous mining history of the worker, a chest x-ray, a sample of sputum for cytological examination, and a blood sample. We also provide routine annual physical examinations of the workers, with special interest in the detection of bronchogenic carcinoma. In the early seventies, we did not have a definite surveillance program. We did not know whether we should have a program like the one started at Memorial or like the one started at the Mayo Clinic. After long consideration, we decided to have a program that does not demand a sputum cytology and chest x-ray every four months, but that allows as many chest x-rays and sputum cytologies as needed to diagnose lung cancer as early as possible. We believe that, if a screening method for cancer is to be optimally effective, it must detect the process at stages early enough for curative therapy. We order a test depending on the age of the miner, the race, the mining history, the smoking history, the radiation exposure levels, and the results of the previous chest x-ray and sputum cytology. With the help of the computer, we have a list of all the miners who should be watched closely because of age, race, mining history, smoking history, radiation exposure, etc. Examination of the miners is performed at our clinic, where all the records are kept. The sputum is collected there but examined in Grand Junction, Colorado, by Dr. Geno Saccomanno. There are two ways to collect sputum. The best way is to collect three consecutive morning samples. For this, we need the cooperation of the miners. They have to follow these instructions and mail the bottle containing the sample to Grand Junction. "Instructions for obtaining a good cough specimen" The enclosed plastic bottle contains a preservative solution, so do not empty out the liquid in it. When you go to bed, place the plastic bottle at your bedside where it will be handy in the morning. When you first get up in the morning (before breakfast) try to cough up some "phlegm" from deep in your chest, and spit it into the liquid in the bottle. Try coughing several times. If you have difficulty coughing, try inhaling deeply the steam from a teakettle (or home-type inhalator). Keep the amount of saliva (ordinary spit) that you put into the bottle along with the cough specimen as small as possible. Do not collect the "phlegm" or mucous that comes from the back of your nose. Put the cap back on the bottle, and shake it vigorously for two minutes. If the amount of material you have coughed up is quite small, then keep the bottle at your bedside for three or four days, and each morning try to add another cough specimen. After obtaining your cough specimen, repack the bottle in the mailing container, and attach the enclosed mailing label. It does not require any postage stamps. Unfortunately, some miners "forget" to mail the sample and end up with an incomplete physical examination. To avoid this some companies, like Homestake, request that we obtain the sample in our clinic by forcing cough and expectorant with a nebulizer machine. This method does not give as good a sputum sample as the previous one, but we do get a sputum sample for every miner. Mining companies are increasingly approaching the social aspect of sustainable development within the rural communities that neighbour their projects and operations. Rural community engagement requires significant effort and resources, and it can be extremely challenging for mining companies to earn and sustain social capital. The focus on rural, proximal community engagement is not to be understated and has led to significant benefits in many communities. However, opposition to mining projects is often exhibited in urban environments, where there may be potential for mining companies to gain social capital with relative ease. Cities tend to have existing frameworks for community engagement and public activation, such as annual parades and festivals, that make it easy for a mining company to provide financial support or value-in-kind. Local organizations and community groups can achieve the same amount of engagement in an urban environment with significantly less effort required from the mining company. By applying simple marketing principles to community engagement strategies, corporations can increase awareness for their business and encourage city residents to think critically about the origin of resources. Unlike many corporations, mining companies are not marketing or selling products to individual consumers. From this arises the opportunity for a company to use marketing to promote other positive initiatives and, as such, connect their brand with positive messaging thus earning social capital. This may lead to a wide variety of secondary impacts including benefits to recruitment efforts, increased political support, and positive media coverage. This paper explores these matters with special reference to Vancouver, BC, Canada and the mining companies Teck and Goldcorp.

Detailed underground geologic map- ping at a scale of 1:1200 has been carried out at the Crown II Mine of Freeman United Coal Mining Company, which operates in the Herrin (No. 6) Coal Member. The roof sequence, upward from the coal, includes (1) soft, medium- to dark-gray shale; (2) hard, black, fissile shale; (3) argillaceous nodular-bedded limestone, and (4) fine-grained, shaly, water-bearing sandstone. The first unit is highly lenticular, and any or all may be missing at a given locality. The sand- stone has a sheet facies and a channel facies. The Herrin Coal is eroded in channels near the Crown II Mine. Structural features mapped at Crown II include normal and strike-slip faults of small displacement, "slips" and clay dikes, and limestone "bosses." Less stable roof and wet con- ditions are encountered where the limestone is thin or missing or where it is broken by natural fractures or by artificial openings that inter- sect the water-bearing strata above the limestone. Geologic mapping of the underground workings has allowed us to predict faults, fracture zones, and channels ahead of the face for this mine. Some lithologic and structural patterns apparently are random and cannot now be projected. Conventional exploratory drilling is entirely inadequate to map faults or lithology of the roof, but it does indicate the range of lithologic variability, which can be used to project needs for roof sup- ports. Drilling also is useful In locating channels and in mapping regional variation in thickness and facies of the sandstone.

As the first wave of precious metal heap leach closures and reclamation projects occur, a number of companies are being hit with costly surprises. While this paper refers specifically to U.S precious metal projects, it could be conceptually directed at copper leach operations and acid rock drainage (ARD) problems on an international basis. ARD is Mother Nature's version of heap leaching, only with different products and timing. Although many precious metal deposits tend to be small in comparison with some base metals systems (porphyry copper deposits), adjacent or nearby discoveries have extended the operating lives of numerous precious metal mines. Now, depleted reserves, several years of relatively depressed precious metals prices and some properties with technical difficulties have resulted in numerous mine closures. As a result, our industry is getting a diverse and comprehensive initial look at mine closure and final reclamation. The situation has been further complicated by the evolutionary trend in regulations and their enforcement and increasing public and political awareness of all environmental issues. Concurrent (proactive) vs. deferred (reactive) reclamation and a realistic early appraisal of ultimate reclamation and closure requirements, not just regulatory compliance, need to be a part of project design. The U.S. and Canada are the current fertile testing grounds and have set the design, regulation and closure standards for the next wave of operations in Latin America, the CIS (?), etc.

Flowsheet improvements, such as series/parallel SX plant configurations, discontinuation of plant sumps and improved filter pumping concepts, the use of in-settler baffle systems, and the Krebs and combined mixer-settler designs offer opportunities to reduce SX plant cost. Today's plants employ permanent cathodes and mechanical stripping, and the increased capital cost can be offset by labor savings and higher current densities. The wider use of HDPE and new cell construction materials also reduce capital cost. The "Portelex" type of relocatable design embodies such new, cost-saving measures in a simple basic plant. Organic inventory and losses are reduced by new, fast-settling, hybrid organic reagents with improved kinetics and selectivity.

The quantum of coal fines below 6 mm in run-of-mine (ROM) coal has been increasing due to progressive mechanization of mining methods which has created a substantial incentive, worldwide, to develop suitable fine coal beneficiation techniques. The majority of the efforts have been directed toward reduction in ash/sulfur contents in clean coal. The beneficiation techniques may be broadly grouped as those based on specific gravity and surface property. The processes, which use heavy medium cyclone, water-only cyclone, concentrating tables, and spirals, belong to the former group while the latter group encompasses froth flotation, column flotation, oleo- flotation, and oil agglomeration. In almost all the gravity based techniques, it has been noted that a classification step prior to beneficiation is essential for effective treatment. In general, the effect of design and process variables on the performance of these units and also the quantification of the processes have been the main areas of research and development. In froth flotation, efforts throughout the world have been mainly to understand the effect of variables and to optimize the process. Quantification of the process has been attempted through kinetic studies and mathematical modeling. The efforts have led to the development of new reagents, machine designs, and flowsheets for a specified objective. The attempts so far with the column flotation and oleoflotation processes have indicated a great potential. Extensive R&D efforts are in progress to understand as well as to commercialize the processes. The efforts in the oil agglomeration process have been toward substantiating the inherent merits of the process by developing cheaper bridging liquids and technology to recover and reuse the oil to make the process commercially viable. Modeling of the process has also been attempted to predict the yield and size distribution of the agglomerates. This paper reviews and summarizes the recent developments in the science and technology of fine coal beneficiation processes. The current trends in R%D efforts for these processes are also highlighted.

Suggestions have been made that the appraisal of mining assets using discounted cash flow techniques should be based solely on proven and probable reserves in reliance upon the widespread international recognition of uniform resource definitions. Following a review of generally accepted valuation principles, a survey of the literature and, most importantly, a review of real transactions in the open market, it is clear that valuators should not be constrained by the growing acceptance of modern mineral resource codes. On the contrary, valuation practitioners should be encouraged to examine all classes of mineralization and, after making due allowance for risk, to utilize all mineral resources as a basis for determining fair market value.

Determination of the best time to replace an aging unit of equipment is a recurring problem which is common to essentially all surface and underground mining operations. Virtually all mining equipment is subject to wear and the resulting deterioration that increases with equipment life. This mechanical deterioration results in lower availability and, thus, decreasing, production. Due to decreasing production and increasing repair costs, there is an optimum age at which the replacement of a given equipment unit with a new unit will result in the lowest cost per unit of production for the equipment operation in question (Figure 1). Determination of this optimum replacement age is further complicated by factors such as: possible overhaul alternatives, fleet replacement and expansion alternatives, remaining life of the mine, and technological improvements in the potential replacement or differences in the production capacities of these replacements. Determination of the optimum time to replace an equipment unit becomes more critical each successive year due to the rising capital costs of new equipment versus maintaining old equipment. An incorrect choice of the replacement age for an equipment unit can result in excessive costs to the mining operation. If a unit is replaced too early, the capital cost of the unit is not fully utilized; conversely, replacing a unit too late results in excessive maintenance costs and low production. The economic life of a piece of equipment is the equipment age that results in the lowest total discounted cost per unit of production for that piece of equipment, not considering the cost of future replacements. The economic life of a piece of equipment is usually shorter than the physical life, the maximum age at which a machine is capable of doing useful work. The optimum replacement age for a piece of mining equipment may vary from the economic life of that equipment due to the remaining life of the mine, fleet considerations, costs associated with potential replacement machines, and capital rationing constraints. For example, the equipment life of the current machine that may result in the lowest cost per unit of production might be 10 years; however, when the timing of the future replacement costs are entered into the calculation, a different life for the current machine might result in the lowest total cost per unit produced for the remaining life of the mine.
