Successful longwall gate entry design requires control of vertical and horizontal stresses. Vertical, or overburden, stresses are most severe in the tailgate where they are concentrated by longwall panel extraction. Horizontal stresses can also be highly destructive but they are less well understood. This paper discusses measurements of in situ horizontal stress fields in the eastern United States, experience with horizontal stress in longwall mines and methods for predicting and controlling horizontal stresses. The information presented was collected through site investigations at 45 US longwalls and an international literature review.

Ion exchange techniques have been growing fast and spectacularly in all phases of Science for the last two decades, but still its acceptance as a unit operation in Metallurgy is resisted. Mainly this is because ion exchange procedures are thought of as glamorous techniques by which only relatively expensive metals are to be recovered. Perhaps this concept comes from the early and basic marriage of uranium and other high price metals and ion exchange procedures. The general trend is that ion exchange technique requires equipment and materials which are too expensive to economically perform a chemical step whenever "cheap" commodities are produced. However, we are here presenting a means of utilization of waste hydrochloric acid by an ion exchange technique. We have studied this from the engineering and economic standpoint in a number of variations of the main procedure discussed here and we-conclude that under proper economic circumstances, the cost of the ion exchange material as well as the equipment and labor involved in the ion exchange section, is by no means unreasonable.

Throughout the years, research studies have reached a consensus in acknowledging the relevancy of surface chemistry phenomena on minerals separation and metals extraction. Many techniques, and notably, scanning electron microscope-based technologies have revolutionised the entire mineral processing industry. Nevertheless, the comprehensive understanding on how surface chemistry properties influence the performance of many processes involving ores is still a challenge, a matter of controversy. The latter is mainly due to the fact that all interfacial processes do not necessarily require stoichiometric and well defined atomic structures. This is particularly true in the case of sulphide minerals which are well known to be superficially unstable in aerated media. When trying to measure any variable related to mineral-mineral or mineral-aqueous solution interfaces, there are too many unknowns regarding how sensitive the interface is when facing sampling protocols and sample handling. The aim of this research work is to make a case for improving future concentrators? survey protocols. It suggests a methodology to study effectively chemical changes at the outmost mineral surface layer at different stages of a mineral processing operation. The sampling protocol and sample handling is presented in details and it is applied to the regrinding stage of an industrial plant.

Lost foam casting is a process in which a polymeric material is formed into the shape of the part to be cast. Parts that are more complex are fabricated by simply gluing several patterns together. The pattern is then coated with a refractory material consisting of a mineral mixture and binders. Finally, hot metal is poured into the pattern, evaporating the expanded polystyrene and taking the shape of the coating shell. Prior to casting, a significant number of the patterns are damaged and inevitably landfilled. In this study, a process was developed for the recovery of expanded polystyrene from the coating and glue contaminants. The process consists of shredding, impact comminution, size classification and pneumatic separation. It is successful in separating up to 97% of the contaminants, while recovering 95% of the polystyrene. Key words: Casting, Lost foam process, Expanded polystyrene recovery

"The purpose of this study is to explore how the geochemical and petrographic components of coal may impact its physical properties, as well as how these components correlate with a history of reportable dynamic failure in coal mines. Dynamic failure events, also termed bumps, bounces, or bursts, are the explosive failures of rock in a mining environment. These events occur suddenly and often with no warning, resulting in worker injury up to and including fatality in greater than 60% of MSHA reportable cases. A database of variables was compiled using publicly available datasets, which included compositional geographic, strength, and Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) data (ACARP, 1998). Results indicate that bumping coals are less mature, lower in carbon, higher in oxygen, softer, and less well cleated than coals that do not bump. High liptinite content was found to correlate with higher average UCS values. However, no clear, direct correlation between UCS and dynamic failure status was observed. The findings of this study establish that differences exist between coals that have experienced reportable dynamic failure accidents versus those that have not. These differences are inherent to the coal itself, independent of mining-induced risk factors. Results further illuminate how compositional attributes of coal influence physical properties and begin to clarify potential links between geochemistry and dynamic failure status. Only through the better understanding of risk can more effective mitigating strategies be enacted.INTRODUCTIONDynamic failure events, also termed bumps, bounces, or bursts, are the sudden failures of rock in a mining or quarrying environment. Failure occurs when the rock’s critical bearing capacity has been exceeded and the rock fails energetically through the outward expulsion of rubblized material (Peng, 2008). These events occur suddenly and often with no warning, resulting in worker injury up to and including fatality in greater than 60% of reported cases through the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Much research has been devoted to the prevention of these events. The effects of overburden depth and stiffness, mine design, mining practices, and in situ stresses are well documented (Agapito and Goodrich, 2000; Brauner, 1994; Campoli and Kertis, 1987; Holland and Thomas, 1954; Iannacchione and Zelanko, 1995; Lawson et al., 2016b; Mark, 2016; Newman, 2002; Peng, 2008; Whyatt, 2008). Despite these significant advancements in coal mine ground control, however, events continue to occur. Proactive risk mitigation remains an important research area. When it comes to the analysis of gold bearing ore, there are literally dozens of variables that contribute to the final "true value" of a given sample. Initial sample selection, splitting size and method, inherent nugget gold, pulverization method, and analytical method variations are but a few. However, it seems that the inherent nugget gold particle is targeted as the primary reason for intra and inter-laboratory variations in assay. The following study will show that this is not always the case. A series of tests were undertaken for the Aurora Partnership-Aurora Project to solve inter-laboratory variations in the analyses of blasthole cuttings. Initial concern was centered on the probability that free gold occurrence was resulting in erratic results for the mine's cyanide shake assays and outside laboratory fire assays. Comparison of fire assay and cyanide shake assay was sporadically consistent with previously demonstrated extraction percentage for the cyanide method. The goal was to delineate the factors that ensure consistency in analyses; implement, where needed, Good Laboratory Practices; and reestablish acceptable analytical method correlation.

Pumpable roof supports provide an alternative approach to secondary support in underground mining. Unlike all other supports that are either partially or fully prefabricated prior to being transported into the mine, the pumpable support is fabricated in place in the mine entry. This reduces the underground material handling efforts and thus the injuries historically associated with in-mine support construction. On-site fabrication also facilitates application of the support in areas that are inaccessible to transportation equipment such as scoops or rail cars, making it ideal for many bleeder applications. One of the main advantages of the pumpable support is that it fully bridges from the mine floor to the roof, thereby eliminating the requirement of ?topping off? the support with wooden wedges or crib blocks that soften most other support responses. This report examines the development of modern pumpable roof support technology and provides a full description of the performance capabilities of each of the support products now on the market.

It is hypothesized that the Hotelling Valuation Principle (HVP) can determine the value of developed gold reserves using simple methods and easily obtained data. This paper reports the results of an empirical test of this hypothesis. Using publicly available data from North American gold companies, we obtained data for V, R, p, and c and ran a simple linear regression using equation (1.1) as the definition of the dependent and explanatory variables. By examining the value of the coefficients of the resulting regression equation, we can draw conclusion as to whether or not the HVP can be confident1y used as an estimator of the value of developed gold reserves.

The Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP), commonly known as the Deep Tunnel Project, was developed by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago as a two-phase solution to the problem of waterway pollution and basement flooding due to sewer system backups created by the combined sewer overflows. With only one contract left before completion of the Phase I tunnels—the 12.4 km(7.7 mi.) long Little Calumet leg—the pollution control phase of the 175.7 km(109.2 mi.) long system will be 93% complete, once the Torrence Avenue tunnel project comes to an end. This paper describes the Torrence Avenue tunnel project, currently under construction by the joint venture of Kenny (Sponsor) / Kiewit / Shea. Mining of the10.4 km (34,151 feet) long and 8.3 m (27'-4") diameter mainline tunnel was completed in a record thirty-one-weeks period and the concrete lining is nearing completion. Details on the complete muck handling system, numerous mining and concrete lining records will be given.

Dr. Ft: L. Handy of Iowa State University's Engineering Experiment Station very handily reduced the relatively complex cement making process to ultimate simplicity: "Take two cups of crushed limestone; add one-half cup of clay or pulverized shale (plus perhaps some sandstone or iron ore; depending); mix thoroughly and grind up fine. Bake in white-hot oven at about 2,600 F. Cool. Add a tablespoon of gypsum: and, again, grind very fine. If you can do this for about a penny a pound, you can almost compete.' Before Dr. Handy's time, is the early days of the U. S. Cement Industry, from 1817 when the Erie Canal was started to 1895 when the first rotary kiln was built, this was the recipe, more or less. Dr. Handy's raw materials were deposited in a natural "cement rock" found in the Hudson, New York and Lehigh, Pennsylvania valleys. At first the natural rock was pulverized (not ground fine) and interlayed with wood for "baking" at about 1,800° F in a batch process vertical shaft kiln or beehive oven; then the calcined pozzalonic (lime and silica) product was cooled and ground fine for shipment in wooden barrels. Later, in 1871, true portland cement was made. The same natural rock was ground fine to make briquettes; interlaced with wood or coal in the "Beehives"; and baked at a clinkering temperature of about 2,6000 F to produce clinker (calcium silicates) which was ground fine for sale. In those days, the crude cements dropped in price from over 1 cent to 1/2 cent per pound. In 1895 the rotary kiln introduced-continuous instead of batch processing. The countercurrent process allowed the same raw materials (now finely ground to about 80% minus 200 mesh like face powder) to be fed at one end of the rotary kiln. Heat from a coal burner was introduced with combustion air at the other end to produce the requisite clinkering temperature. The clinker product was discharged for atmospheric cooling, mixed with gypsum, and again ground fine as face powder. The cement was sold primarily in barrels, later in jute or cloth bags, then paper bags, and now primarily in bulk truck and barge carriers. The price dropped to a 1/4 cent per pound by 1910, but with recent inflation it now sells for 2 cents per pound.

A high calcium fluid-bed combustor ash has been shown to be an effective binder at dosages of 1 to 2% of the magnetite concentrate weight. Magnetite pellets 1.3 cm (1/2 inch) in diameter were produced with dry crushing strengths greater than 22.3 Newtons/pellet (5.0 pounds force/pellet), which is comparable to the results produced using conventional bentonite binder. The effectiveness of fly-ash-based binders was considerably improved when calcium chloride was added as an accelerator. Addition of calcium chloride at a rate of 0.1 to 0.2% of the total powder weight increased the strength of dried pellets by as much as 22% compared to the strength of pellets made using fly-ash without accelerators.

Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (SIMS) was used to study copper ion adsorption, and its effect on subsequent sulfide collector adsorption, on pyrite and pyroxene minerals under flotation related conditions. Copper was found to adsorb on both of these minerals and cause enhanced sulfide collector adsorption. The distribution and depth profile of copper and collector on these mineral surfaces were obtained by using SIMS in the imaging mode. The results of this study have provided a valuable insight to understanding pyrite and gangue flotation observed frequently in operating plants.

Some gold production was obtained from placer deposits in Puerto Rico during the period of Spanish colonial rule, but most of the gold was produced prior to 1536. There had been no significant hard rock mining, other than in quarries for road metal or construction purposes or for raw materials to make cement, prior to 1954 when the government of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico recognized that changes in the mining code were necessary to stimulate exploration for metalliferous ore deposits. The Puerto Rican Legislature passed an act (No. 6), which was approved on Oct. 6, 1954, that reiterated that the title to all "commercial minerals" is vested in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. The act provided for the establishment of a Mining Commission, stipulated the power% with which the Mining Commission was vested, and provided that no one may dispose of "commercial minerals" in Puerto Rico without a Commonwealth grant issued on its behalf by the Mining Commission. Act No. 6 also provided for prospecting permits, mining leases, and grants. The Mining Commission, by authority granted to it by Act No. 6, adopted regulations effective Nov. 21, 1957, relating to prospecting, leasing, and producing commercial minerals in Puerto Rico. Royalty rates were also specified for various types of deposits at different annual tonnage production levels.

With the recent demand for increased coal production there has been a corresponding increase in the horsepower of the shearing machines. The resultant increase in the machine haulage pull has heightened the incident of haulage chain breakage resulting in machine downtime, but more seriously the danger to face personnel. This paper discusses the application of chainless haulage to longwall mining and describes the systems currently available.

Haile Gold Mine is located near Kershaw, South Carolina, approximately 50 miles south of Charlotte, North Carolina. Gold was first discovered at the site in 1827, and the property has been through several operating periods since. The relatively low grade and refractory nature of the deposit has been a challenge for efficient processing since the start of mining on the property. Early processing techniques included gravity separation and barrel chlorination. The last operation employed heap leaching in 1985 through 1992. After being closed and reclaimed for over 20 years, the property is poised to re-open and produce once again. In this chapter of the Mine?s legacy, flotation and ultra-fine grinding will be employed to achieve economic extraction of gold and silver from the pyrite. This paper briefly reviews some of the mine?s history, the metallurgical testing, the flowsheet and discusses design considerations. Many unique ventilation problems have been faced as Avery Island Mine's large openings have been mined. High humidity of outside air combines with the hygroscopic salt to create a corrosive atmosphere. Massive rooms preclude routine use of brattices to direct air flow to the working faces. Large amounts of explosives are consumed in single blasts. Resulting concussion pounds air control structures and ANFO ignition creates large amounts of nitrogen dioxide in single rooms. Geologic constraints confine new shafts and slopes to areas thought to be free of potential ground water hazards. Dust control techniques are limited by dry product demanded by customers. The Avery Island Mine's ventilation system has evolved to deal practically with the conditions and to dependably provide fresh air to the miners. International Salt Company's Avery Island Salt Mine, a multiple level room and pillar operation, has been mined steadily since about 1900. It is known as one of the "Five Island" salt dome mines of South Louisiana's Gulf Coast. Production from the area places Louisiana first in United States rock salt mined tonnage, according to the United States Bureau of Nines, 1982 (1). International Salt Company is a major force in U.S. salt production, as it also operates mines in Detroit, Michigan; Cleveland, Ohio; and Retsof, New York; a solar salt facility in Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles; and a solution mining plant at Watkins Glen, New York.

The sequential copper analysis method is a particularly useful technique to semi-quantitatively define the geologic, mineralogic, and metallurgical types and zonations commonly associated with porphyry-type copper deposits. The method is based on the partial dissolution behavior displayed by the prevalent copper minerals malachite, chrysocolla, chalcocite, and chalcopyrite to solutions containing sulfuric acid and sodium cyanide. Results from sequential analyses of the sample and analytical residue using sulfuric acid followed by sodium cyanide and then aqua regia solutions when compared with conventional total copper analyses can determine the amounts of leachable oxide minerals, leachable secondary sulfide minerals, and primary copper minerals, respectively. Sequential assay analytical results and interpretation are presented for copper deposits in Chile, Mexico, and the United States.

Consider a deep gold orebody with grade of 4 g/t (0.11 oz/st). At the time of this writing, with gold prices at historic highs, it could be a good, but not great, prospect. But if it is a vein deposit, and those veins are 200 g/t (5.8 oz/st), it would be significantly more attractive if there was a way to produce directly from those veins, leaving the rest of the rock in place. It has been a viable commercial technology for more than five decades.
