Heavy medium cyclones (HMCs) are commonly used to clean run-of-mine coal in the 50 x 0.5 mm size range. Unfortunately, field studies suggest that industrial HMC circuits are often poorly designed or improperly operated, resulting in significant losses of recoverable clean coal. To assist plant engineers in overcoming these problems, a spreadsheet-based simulation package has been developed to predict HMC performance based on mathematical expressions originally developed by Wood (1990). A case study is provided to illustrate the predictive capabilities of this simulation package for an industrial HMC.

INTRODUCTION Probably the most important family of chemicals used in mineral processing today is a category of basic commodity chemicals loosely denoted as pH regulators. Typical chemicals which are referred to as pH regulators include lime, magnesium hydroxide, soda ash, caustic soda, ammonia, sulfuric acid, and hydrochloric acid. These chemicals are often used in very significant amounts in almost all of the major mineral processing operations such as flotation, hydrometallurgy, etc. (in dosages up to ten pounds per ton of feed ore treated). While cheaper in cost per unit weight of chemical than more specific chemicals such as collectors, frothers, extractents, etc., the overall cost to the mill operator is generally higher with pH regulators per ton of ore processed than with any other given processing chemical. For example, a rough rule of thumb in sulfide mineral flotation is that the cost of lime is double that of the collector(s) used. The symbol pH is used to designate hydrogen ion concentration. When acids, salts, and bases are dissolved in water, individual molecules are dissociated into their constituent radicals or ions. The strength of an acid or a base increases with the extent of such dissociation or ionization. An alkaline solution is one in which the number of Qydroxyl ions (OH ) exceeds the hydrogen ions (H ). In an acid solution, the hydrogen ions predominate. In either case, both ions are always present as water itself ionizes to a limited extent, that is: [ ] The pH scale is logarithmic and the pH value is the negative of the logarithm (base 10) of the molar concentration of hydrogen ions per liter of solution. For example, a pH of 5 means that the molar concentration of hydrogen ions per liter is 0.00001 (1 x 10-5). Likewise, a pH of 9 means that the molar concentration of hydrogen ions per liter is 1 x 10-9. Normally, the relationship between hydrogen ion and hydroxyl ion concentration is based on the relationship: Concentration of H ion x concentration of OH- ion = constant. Eq. (1) In dilute and/or moderately concentrated solutions that are normally used in mineral procygsing processes, the constant at 25°C is 10-14. On the pH scale, the value of pH equal to 7 represents the hydrogen ion concentration of a neutral solution. pH values lower than pH 7 indicate increasing acidity and higher values than 7 indicate alkalinity. Table 1 shows the nature of the pH scale at 25°C. Temperature affects the extent of ionization of dissolved acids, salts, bases, and water so that the hydrogen ion concentration (hence pH) of a solution is also affected by temperature. As a means of demonstrating this dependency, Table 2 shows the change of the exponent of the constant (base 10) in Eq. 1 and the pH value corresponding to neutrality as a function of temperature. It is also important, for example, that alkalinity or acidity expressed by pH not be confused with total alkalinity or total acidity. For example, total alkalinity is commonly determined by titration with a standard acid solution (usually HC1). pH is a measure of the hydroxyl ion concentration of an alkaline solution, whereas titration is a measure of an alkaline solution's acid neutralizing capacity. Thus, if one takes a series of various alkaline solutions prepared using different chemicals but all of exactly the same pH (and temperature) and then subsequently carries out a titration on each solution with a standard acid, it would be observed that the various alkaline solutions would neutralize entirely different amounts of acid. As an example, 0.08 grams of caustic (NaOH) , 6.32 grams of soda ash (Na2CO3), and 8.17 grams of ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH) all have a pH of 11.3 at 25°C. One liter of each of the above solutions neutralizes 0.073, 4.348 and 8.496 grams of HC1, respectively. Mining activities have recently been taken place in Vourinos mountain, northern Greece, exploiting the so-called ?olivinite?. A representative sample was collected from this mining area. Mineralogical analysis was conducted using X-Ray powder Diffraction (XRD). A thin section was prepared and analyzed under optical microscope. X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) was employed for the chemical analyses of major, mi-nor and trace elements. Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled with energy dispersive x-ray analysis system (ESEM-EDX) was also applied for the characterization of the sample. Forsterite (Mg-rich olivine) and enstatite (Mg-rich orthopyroxene) were the main mineral phases determined by XRD, with a 56% and 44% content respectively. Trace amounts of chromite spinels were also determined. Based on this characterization, the industrial rock proved to be a hartzburgite (a type of peridotite in petrological terms). Optical microscopy and ESEM-EDX provided similar observations and confirmed the above-mentioned results. XRF revealed a composition of 43.31 MgO, 44.25 SiO2, 9.98 Fe2O3, 1.40 CaO, 0.67 Al2O3, 0.22 MnO, 0.01 TiO2 and negligible amount of LOI (<0.1%). Trace elements with high concentrations were Cr (2678 ppm) and Ni (2044 ppm). The comprehensive characterization of this mining product suggested the suitability for various uses, such as refractories, foundry and slag conditioner. Additional experiments are being carried out for environmental applications, e.g. wastewater treatment.

The Dee disseminated gold deposit is the northernmost mine in the Carlin gold belt. We analyzed soil samples £ran undisturbed areas overlying the deposit to determine the usefulness of soil geochemistry in identifying ore zones. The depth of sampling ranged from 12 to 14 inches, depending on soil development. The -80 mesh fraction was analyzed by atomic absorption for Au, As, Sb, Hg, and T1 and by semiquantitative spectrographic analysis for Ag. Highly anomalous Au, Kg, As, Ag, and Sb are most closely associated with ore zones whereas T1 is more broadly dispersed. Hg is the only element that identifies deep ore.

For the year 1985, the U.S. coal industry produced 881 million tons of bituminous coal and lignite. Domestic consumption amounted to 814 million tons. The electric utilities consumed 689 million tons, almost 85 percent of total consumption, over 78 percent of production. In May, 1986, the NCA forecast that with moderate growth rate averaging 1.9% per year from 1985 through the year 2000, production could reach 1,176 billion tons and domestic consumption 1079 billion. The estimate for electric utilities indicate 924 million tons for the year of 2000, about the same percentage of production and consumption as now experienced. Before we consider the main topic of this paper, the cost of using high sulfur coal, let us examine the coal use patterns of the last 25 years, the changes in those patterns and consider the reasons for those changes. Utah Power and Light Company&apos;s Deer Creek Mine had been developed to a point where mine ventilation efficiency had declined to an unacceptable level. Problems identified were ventilation of inactive areas, excessive leakage, and restrictions in the return and intake air ways. Mine management implemented an intensive mine ventilation improvement program to alleviate future problems with respirable dust in the working sections and diesel equipment emissions. Program objectives included sealing of inactive areas of the mine, rehabilitation of high resistance areas, and construction of additional intake and return aircourses. Applications of computer modeling techniques are used to predict the effects of ventilation changes and improvements. Improvements are then prioritized to achieve the largest efficiency increases first. Actual real time assessment of the mine environment and ventilation changes are accomplished with a mine wide monitoring computer system. The Deer Creek ventilation improvement program has more than doubled the ventilating efficiency of the mine.

The copper mines of Michigan are all in the northern part of that state on the Keweenaw Peninsula, which extends from the (Michigan) mainland for about seventy miles northeasterly toward the middle of Lake Superior. The mines occur in a belt or zone occupying the central portion of the peninsula from end to end.. The most productive mines for many years past have been those located not far from the city of Houghton in&apos; the central part of the zone, in a section extending about ten miles southwest of Houghton and fifteen miles northeast. The most important mines in order of location, from the northeast to south¬west, are the following: Mohawk, Ahmeek, Allouez, North Kearsarge, Wolverine, South Kearsarge, Centennial, Calumet. and Hecla, Osceola, Franklin, Quincy, Hancock, Isle Royale, Superior, Baltic, Trimountain, and Champion. The first three named are in Keweenaw county and all of the others are in Houghton county. Still farther to the southwest are the Lake, Mass, Adventure, Michigan, Victoria, and White Pine mines. These are in Ontonagon county.History. The exploitation of these copper mines extends back into prehistoric times. There is little evidence that the American Indians carried on mining operations in this region in the period shortly before the advent of white men, but there is abundant evidence that the ancestors of the Indians, •or some earlier inhabitants of the region, carried on primitive mining operations. For example, Mr. S. O. Knapp, Agent of the Minne¬sota Mining Company, in the winter of 1847-48, made the first discovery of prehistoric mining. "Sustainable long-term restoration requires adequate planning and preparation, implementation, and measurement goals to monitor success associated with restoring sites to pre-disturbance levels of ecological health. The Buckhorn Mountain Mine riparian habitat restoration project has been a multi-year endeavor with a variety of restoration techniques implemented by Kinross Gold/Crown Resources Corporation. INTRODUCTION The Buckhorn Mountain Mine procured mitigation lands during the permitting process to be set aside for long-term restoration. A portion of this mitigation land included three aquatic habitat mitigation parcels; a spring and wetland complex and two stream and riparian corridors. These properties were historically used for agriculture purposes and livestock grazing. During initial permitting, habitat monitoring and mitigation plans were created to help guide restoration, and provide measures for success. Various techniques and adaptations have been implemented on the properties since 2007, and continued efforts are being implemented annually to ensure the long-term success of the project. Field measurements are collected annually to ensure mitigation objectives are being met, and provide opportunity to modify restoration efforts when necessary. MATERIALS/METHODS Restoration efforts have included implementation of several methods including livestock exclusion, treatment of state and locally listed noxious weed species, installation of regionally sourced riparian plant species and local stock willow cuttings. Annual mechanical and herbicide treatments for noxious weeds have been conducted annually. Efforts to control reed canarygrass (Phalaris arundinacea) have been implemented since 2013; methods include mechanical and herbicide treatments. A combination of methods has been employed to help aid restoration of native species within the riparian corridor, and increase survival of planted species, including weed matting and browse barriers to aid riparian planting success. Instream planting of local stock willow have also been employed to increase stream vegetative cover and provide long-term bank stabilization. Most recently, a perched culvert near one of the properties has been replaced with an aquatic life passable culvert designed to aid in the upstream migration of fish species into the stream system. Efforts to provide increased fisheries into upstream portions of the system and aid in restoration of stream bed and bank have been employed to increase the ecological value downstream of the replacement. In addition to efforts completed by the client to provide restoration efforts, a local non-profit organization, in conjunction with the client, installed beaver dam analogues (BDAs) in the fall of 2014. These structures are intended to raise water levels along stretches of incised channel in an attempt to flood historic off-channel floodplain"

"Tunneling and Underground works are unequivocally subject to a diversity of inherent uncertainties associated with the geotechnical, hydro-geological and environmental regime that surrounds them. On many occasions, these uncertainties can provoke loss events of considerable consequences. The present contribution elaborates on losses that the insurance market has suffered in the recent years, following a construction failure event. These losses are being considered and analysed on a quantitative basis through evaluation of cost related data, with explicit discretization of the applied construction methodology and of the subsequent developed failure type since both of which are considered of major importance. Given the identified persistence and regularity of some loss-contributing factors, recommendations are provided on the basis of a proactive risk engineering management approach that are envisaged to reinforce the understanding of project risks and alleviate the incurred insurance cost. 1 INTRODUCTION The underground construction sector has always been a very challenging area for all involved parties, including the insurance market. Main reason for that remains the uniqueness of the uncertainties sources and the subsequent inherent risks that the tunneling and underground projects are exposed to. In many instances, these risks materialize, leading to loss events with substantially high impact on reinstatement cost and incurred delays, which depending among others on the insurance coverage will have to be bared by the Insurance market. In the recent decades and as the tunneling industry boomed and expanded with many major and significant projects undertaken around the world, the insurance market was faced with additional challenges. Increased competition during tender coupled with the scale and complexity of the projects and politically driven decision making exerted pressure on the project timelines, completion dates and budget. The pressure for on-time or even early project completion- to avoid liquidated damages or achieve bonus payments, respectively- along with cost reduction efforts and the incentive for innovative failure events. That, in turn, put additional pressure on the Insurance market which had experienced a significant amount of losses with substantial cost. One of the triggered mitigation actions was the introduction of the Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works (ITIG, 2006 & 2012; MunichRe 2006, Wannick, 2007, Spencer, 2008, Adeyemo, 2011)."

Disseminated Au-As-Hg mineralization is localized along the Getchell Fault system at the Getchell Mine in north-central Nevada. Replacement ore bodies occur in Cambrian carbonaceous limestone and limy shale beds. Cretaceous granodiorite, dacite porphyry, and andesite porphyry dikes parallel the fault zone and are spatially associated with the mineralization. Hydrothermal alteration and mineralization occur continuously along 4-5 km of the fault system, and extend more than 1 km down-dip. Alteration consists primarily of removal of carbonate and deposition of quartz, pyrite, and carbonaceous material. Marcasite, sericite, kaolinite, calcite, barite, and fluorite are common. Gold content reaches more than 43 ppm in parts of the altered zones and averaged 9.3 ppm in the mined ore bodies. For the mineralized zones as a whole arsenic averages 0.28%, and occurs primarily as realgar, orpiment, and arsenopyrite. Mercury (22 ppm) is finely disseminated and mercury-bearing minerals are seldom recognizeable. Accessory mineralization includes antimony (100 ppm), copper (47 ppm) , lead (18 ppm) , molybdenum (10 ppm) , tungsten (16 ppm) , and zinc (50 ppm) . Geologic field studies and K-Ar dating suggest that the mineralization is related to a hydrothermal system produced by the granodiorite and related dikes.

Fine grinding in an air swept and a grate discharge ball mill working in closed circuit with a forced vortex air classifier has been investigated in continuous laboratory scale. Minerals with different physical properties were ground down to 40, 20, and 10 micron top size. The shape of the product particle size distribution curve was investigated and specific surface (BET) was measured. During production of material with top size of 40 microns in an air swept mill, the capacity was up to 25% higher when compared to a grate discharge mill. This difference dropped to 180A during production of 10 micron top size material. A corresponding decrease in power consumption was observed. An important finding is that by regulation of the air flow rate through the mill, it is possible to achieve products with different specific surfaces and particle size distribution curve steepness. During production of the 10 pm material, the specific surface could be varied in the range 3 to 4.5 m2/g. Such powders could hardly be produced in a grate discharge mill because fine particles coated the grinding media and the lining. On the other hand the internal classification in the air swept mill kept the size distribution of the mill content relatively free of fines. This prevented a similar slowing-down of the air swept grinding process.

The success of the excavation of a sewage tunnel in a very extreme geological conditions, from river deposits and sandy layers to hard dolomite, and several meters below the estuary under the sea water influence, shows that the choice of a right equipment together with the use of chemical products like foam and polymers enable to dig tunnels in unexpected areas and give solution to the environmental problems. The paper describes the excavation and support process as well as the adopted solutions in every material and during the cross through the intermediate shafts, also under sea influence.

Status of ISO 14000 standards. The ISO 14000 are voluntary international standards providing a frame-work that allows a company to integrate an effective environmental-management system (EMS) into its operations. The purpose of an EMS is to provide a systematic procedure to identify the environmental aspects of a company&apos;s activities, evaluate any significant impacts and use the information to set objectives and targets toward continuous improvement of the company&apos;s environmental compliance and performance. In addition to the specifications for certification, ISO 14000 can be used as a guide to develop an effective environmental-management system or for self-declaration. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is a worldwide federation founded in 1947 to promote the development of international manufacturing, trade and communication standards. The organization is now represented in 118 countries, with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) representing the United States. The principal goals of the ISO is "to promote the development of standardization and related ac¬tivities in the world with a view toward facilitating the international exchange of goods and services and to develop cooperation in the sphere of intellectual, scientific, technological and economic activity." ISO develops standards with input from government and industry. Because the standards are voluntary, there are no legal requirements to pressure countries to adopt them. However, many governments, industries and US agencies are adopting the ISO standards as a requirement for business trans¬actions, thereby, compelling suppliers to adopt ISO standards. These business and market forces, which are likely to be strategic business issues in the 21st century global marketplace, are imposing the need to develop a systematic approach to environmental management. The ISO 14000 series evolved from a United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in 1972. It includes a broad range of elements: the basic environmental management system, environmental auditing criteria for internal and external auditors, criteria for environmental performance evaluation (EPE), environmental labeling criteria and life-cycle assessment methodologies. The standards comprise two categories: organization evaluation standards and product oriented standards (Table 1). The ISO 14001 specifications contain the requirements for developing an environmental-management system that may be objectively audited for certification. The ISO 14004 standard provides guidance on interpreting the ISO 14000 specifications for the development and implementation of the EMS and for coordination with the management system of the company. On Sept. 1, 1996, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Registrar Accreditation Board (RAB) signed a formal agreement to create a new entity called the National Accreditation Program (NAP). To obtain certification, a company must fulfill the requirements outlined in ISO 14001. It is required that "a third party give written assurance that a company&apos;s EMS meets all the requirements of ISO 14001." Preparing for ISO 14000 can include subscribing to voluntary environmental initiatives; learning from ISO 9000 quality-management experiences; and utilizing information from recognized training courses, publications and numerous Internet resources. Once committed to an EMS, the management should provide sufficient resources to achieve continuous environmental-performance improvement, as outlined in an environmental policy. A thorny issue now being debated concerns the potential liabilities of documenting the environmental performance of a company. General impact of the ISO 14000 EMS standards. With increasing stakeholder awareness, costly end-of-pipe pollution-control approaches and the success of ISO 9000 quality-management standards, the ISO 14000 EMS standards are being adopted by companies and governments worldwide. The United States and Canada have well-established programs. In Europe, countries differ but are firmly committed toward environmental-management standards (BS 7750, EMAS and ISO 14000). The Department of Environmental Protec¬tion of the State of Pennsylvania is using ISO 14000 as a vehicle to develop a closer working relationship with industry, and it is anticipated that this policy will eventually lead to fewer environmental site inspections for those companies with ISO 14001 certification. Since 1955 Gaspe Mines has produced 144 million tonnes of ore, averaging 0.87% Cu, mined from two open pits and underground workings. In 1994, four exploration drill holes discovered a buried porphyry/skarn Cu-Mo deposit at depths of between 1000 m and 1700 m below the top of Porphyry Mountain. The mineralization and alteration associated with the Porphyry mountain quartz monzonite does not outcrop. A total of 19,500 m of drilling in 12 drill holes has outlined 200 million tonnes grading 0.73% Cu and 0.08% Mo. Mineralization occurs as veins and disseminations of chalcopyrite and molybdenite. Rockfall hazards are ubiquitous in mining environments making their control critical for safe mining operations. The complex processes involved in rockfall events necessitate a probabilistic modeling approach with well-calibrated material properties. The controls designed to mitigate rockfall hazards need to be reliable, efficient, and safe to deploy to meet the constraints present at an active mine. This paper presents an innovative solution to rockfall at Rio Tinto’s Bingham Canyon Mine. The solution incorporates the site-specific calibration and creation of a predictive rockfall model with the design, field testing, implementation, and monitoring of the rockfall controls.

The roles of pulsating mechanisms such as the amplitude and frequency of the jig cycle are well established in jigging. Also well established are the roles of the size ratio and the volume fraction of the feed. In iron ore beneficiation plants, these process parameters are optimized to achieve the highest efficiency. However, the role of one of the more important feed characteristics, the liberation characteristic of the feed, has not been studied in detail. Evaluation of the liberation characteristics is difficult because the required washability test is not viable for iron ore feed. In this paper, a new method is proposed in which the liberation characteristics are measured through a separation efficiency value. In the new evaluation method, jigging parameters such as amplitude and frequency of the jig cycle are optimized from the fundamental understanding of the process dynamics and feed characteristics such as size distribution. Then, feeds with different liberation characteristics are tested to evaluate the liberation characteristics of feed in jigging.

The Province of Ontario covers an area of some 400 thousand square miles, however the subject I will be talking about today, the licencing of pits and quarries in southern Ontario, refers to about one quarter of this total area but contains better than 93% of the total population of the province or about 8 million people. Southern Ontario had and still has many inviting features to industry. The Great Lakes almost surround us, hydro power has been relatively inexpensive and abundant, but more in line with our topic today are the ample deposits of sand, gravel and limestone, all of which are used directly or indirectly throughout and are the mainstay of our construction industry. I say we are fortunate to have these non-renewable resources in abundance in close proximity to our industrial and metropolitan areas, but like so many of our resources we have taken them for granted for too long. What has happened in our case, as I am sure is common in many of your own similar situations, because of the recent, current popular trend by naturalists and environ- mentalists to preserve our natural heritage at the expense of all else, through parklands and indiscriminate zoning policies, these once abundant reserves have been tremendously eroded.

The mechanisms of chalcopyrite oxidation in alkaline solutions have been studied using cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy techniques. The cyclic voltammetry was used to elucidate oxidation/reduction reactions, whereas impedance spectroscopy was used for in-situ characterization of the interface. To analyze the impedance spectra, equivalent circuit models were constructed based on a layer- wise growth of reaction products. Parameters of the equivalent circuit were calculated by comparing the experimental spectrum with that expected on the basis of equivalent circuit. From the value of equivalent circuit parameters, properties of the surface layers were inferred. These properties change substantially with the change in oxygen and/or collector concentration in solution. From such changes the effect of oxygen and collector concentration on the contact angle and flotation behavior of chalcopyrite were interpreted.

"In underground metal/nonmetal mines, repeated short-term exposure to high levels of airborne contaminants can become a serious health issue. Currently there are no common mechanisms to control or mitigate these localized short-term high exposures to contaminants. To improve miners’ health and safety, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) is developing a Smart Monitoring and Control (SMAC) system for real-time monitoring of mine air quality, with integrated countermeasures to reduce these high concentrations of airborne contaminants in localized sections of mines. To develop and test a SMAC system that could be implemented in an underground mine, researchers at SMRD built a test apparatus incorporating a fan, louver, ducting, and sensors combined with atmospheric monitoring and control software. This system will institute effective countermeasures to reduce contaminant levels, improving miner safety and health. INTRODUCTION Underground metal/nonmetal mines continue to expand production by employing large equipment in greater numbers and by mining into hotter and more challenging environments which are typically further away from fresh air sources. This challenges the ventilation system to provide adequate quantities of fresh air to the workplace and increases the potential for air contamination that could result in immediate and long-term health and safety issues to miners. Currently, airflow and contaminant concentration in mines are typically based on full-shift sampling which may not identify repeated short-term exposures to high levels of airborne contaminants such as NO2, CO, diesel particulate matter (DPM), and dust with high silica contents. Repeated short-term exposure to these high levels of airborne contaminants over long periods can lead to serious health issues which are documented in several studies [1-3]. Based on data from ventilation surveys and contaminant measurements, mines often attempt to minimize exposures by sending more fresh air to the working areas where contaminant concentrations are found to be high. Real-time monitoring and control allows mines the option to monitor contaminants and implement controls in real-time. Real-time monitoring and control of the underground mine atmosphere has been a subject of research since its beginning in Finland at Outokumpu’s Pyhäsalmi Mine in 1969 [4]. More recently, the real-time monitoring and control problem has been addressed using ventilation on demand (VOD) systems [5, 6]. A VOD system attempts to deal with this issue on a global level by controlling fans, louvers, and doors to increase airflow to active work areas and reduce contamination. However, a VOD system only controls the distribution of airflow and may not be helpful in mines where the airflow is at maximum capacity. Researchers at SMRD are developing a SMAC system for real-time monitoring of mine air quality with an integrated ability to trigger countermeasures to reduce high concentrations of airborne contaminants in localized sections of mines. The SMAC system will be designed, tested, and refined in the laboratory environment before being demonstrated in an underground mine. This system will not only try to minimize the gaseous contaminants by regulating the airflow locally, but will also potentially employ a filtration system to reduce the airborne contaminants in case the maximum airflow capacity is reached. This paper presents development of the test apparatus for the SMAC system."
