INTRODUCTION The Ballard Siphon was built in 1935 and consists of two 91.4 cm (36-inch) diameter wood-stave pipes. These pipes convey sewer flowsunder the Ship Canal from northwest Seattle and the Ballard Regulator to the North Interceptor and the West Point Treatment plant. The siphons were constructed using open cut construction, are now buried in the sediment on the floor of the canal, and have severely limited ability to be dewatered, inspected, or cleaned. The existing siphon is 394.7 m (1,295 feet) long from the junction structure on the southern shoreline to the regulator structure on the north. The location of the Ballard Siphon is shown in Figures 1 and 2. The area around the Ballard Siphon has become more populated and developed since the siphon was built. Additionally, the Ballard Siphon is subject to high flows that are greater than the capacity of the pipelines. This has resulted in predict-able Combined Sewer Overflows(CSO?s) whenever a large, long duration rain event occurs. The aged pipeline of uncertain viability has become a critical piece of the sewer system infrastructure. Because of the age of the pipelines and their importance, a sonar survey was completed on both barrels of the Ballard Siphon in December of 2005. The sonar images appeared to indicate crown intrusion of the wood-stave pipes, which suggested that the pipes were in imminent danger of collapse. As a result, an Emergency Declaration was executed by King County and the Ballard Siphon Replacement Project was initiated. Staheli Trenchless Consultants was retained to perform feasibility studies to deter-mine the viability of using microtunneling and horizontal directional drilling (HDD) for replacement of the Ballard Siphon. For the evaluations, the preferred site location was determined to be at or near the site of the existing Ballard Siphon in order to minimize the ancillary sewer work which would accompany moving to a new site. To meet flow demands and hydraulic requirements, the replacement siphon needed a mini-mum equivalent diameter of 182.9 cm (72 inches). This could be accomplished with a number of different siphon diameters and configurations including, but not limited to, three 106.7 cm (42-inch) diameter pipelines, two 152.4 cm (60-inch) pipelines, or two 91.44 cm (36-inch) pipelines and a 121.9 cm (48-inch) pipeline.

A study was conducted to assess a new wet gravity-separation machine, identified as the Multi-Gravity Separator(MGS). Chromite fines, obained from an Albanian chromite and olivine ore and containing 23% Cr2O3 and 18% SiO2, were used in the study. The first step was to determine the influence of various operating parameters. The study indicated that the most important variables for the MGS are rotational speed, tilt angle and shake amplitude. The best treatment conditions for the ore were then identified by investigating a series of circuits designed to produce a marketable product. In open circuit, a concentrate containing 50% CI-203 was obtained with a recovery of 72%.

Industrial-scale test results indicate superior metallurgical performance of column flotation compared to conventional cell flotation for copper cleaning. A technical comparison of bubble generation systems for column flotation is made. Two types of bubble generation systems are considered: the filter-cloth type spargers and the Turbo-Air® sparger, which utilizes an air-water mixture fed to the column through injection tubes. Examples of the improved technical performance available with an external sparger system are presented using data from plant tests conducted for specific applications with several different mineral ores. INTRODUCTION Column flotation is now a valuable unit operation which mineral processing engineers employ in the design and operation of flotation circuits in nearly all mineral applications. The acceptance of columns in the mid- 1980s by the minerals industry was paralleled by a rigorous approach to developing a scientific understanding of the design, scale- up, and operation of column flotation units (Finch and Dobby, 1990). Since then, column flotation has become a standard unit of the cleaning stage in many new mineral concentrator projects and has replaced older mechanical cells to improve process efficiency. The size of column cells has continued to grow from the initial 0.9- to 2.1 -meter diameter range, and it is not uncommon to find column cells today being 2.7- to 3.6-meters in diameter. With the success of the smaller units, the scale-up to larger cells has been proven and demonstrated by the performance of the large-diameter cells (Murdock and Wyslouzil. 1991). The use of columns in flotation circuits has also been accompanied by developments in modelling. control, and optimization of column performance (Lee et al, 1991). The bubble generation system is the heart of the operation of column flotation cells. The most common methods for generating bubbles can be divided into two types: the internal and external spargers. Internal spargers are typically a porous material, such as sintered glass, porous rubber or filter-cloth, or maybe a single- or multi-nozzle sparger. External spargers implies that a gas and a liquid (either water or slurry) are brought into contact outside the column and that mixture is then introduced into the column. Several types of external spargers are available today, and innovative designs for externally mounted air sparging systems have been a significant factor in the successful application of columns. INTRODUCTION Application Measurement of rock deformation is essential to stability and behavioral monitoring of underground openings. The difficulties of obtaining adequate sample distribution, density, and orientation can frequently be overcome by the use of single and multiple position borehole extensometers. In its simplest form, a borehole extensometer consists of an instrument head, usually anchored in the collar of a borehole, and a number of in-hole anchors, each of which is fixed in place at a known distance from the collar. As rock adjacent to the borehole deforms, the component parallel to the borehole direction causes a distance change between adjacent in-hole anchors, as well as a distance change between individual anchors and the instrument head. These changes are measured by means of a mechanical link (usually wire or rod) extending to the instrument head from each anchor. The resulting data can be used to compute the distribution, magnitude, rate, and acceleration of deformation in the material intersected by the extensometer's borehole. Wire Vs. Rod Extensometers Since the early 1960s myriad varieties of borehole extensometers have become available through the combination of various special features of two basic instruments, the wire and rod versions of borehole extensometers. Recent publications have recommended shallow depth limitations for wire extensometers, and favor rod extensometers for a broad range of borehole inclinations and depths. There are three main reasons for using a deep wire system: its cost effectiveness; the fact that tremendous depth means tremendous rod weight which will cause the rod to buckle or rub against the borehole or casing wall; and users' attitude and proper understanding of how to install and apply a wire-type extensometer. Here experience plays a big role. Over the years, many have learned the hard way that untensioned rod extensometers are simple and inherently inexpensive, but limited to vertical up holes where sensitivity is not influenced by friction between the rod elements and the borehole wall or protective conduit, the inertia of the rod elements, or the direction of the movement to be measured. In deep, horizontal, or inclined holes, and in instances where compressive as well as tensile strains or displacements are anticipated, tensioned rod or wire systems are preferred. System Components Borehole extensometers are made up of at least the following five principal components: the instrument head; the collar anchor assembly; the downhole system of anchors and rods or wires; the signal cable if the head is equipped for electronic readout; and the readout apparatus, whether mechanical or electronic. These components are shown in Fig. 1. Borehole Requirements Most extensometers are designed for installation in nominal 75 to 57-mm (3.0 to 2.25-in.) diam drill holes. Either a diamond drill or a percussion drill hole is satisfactory, provided the variation in drill-hole diameter is within the tolerance of the standard anchor design. The basic system may be modified for other hole diameters by changing the dimensions of the collar anchor and downhole anchor assemblies. Some instrument heads and collar anchor assemblies require enlarged borehole collars, though usually not over 150 mm (6 in.) for a depth of 1 m (3 ft). It is desirable, although not essential, that holes be free-draining. Holes must be clean and free of debris before installation. Depth/Orientation of Extensometer Boreholes Extensometers are designed to measure axial strain components in the instrumented drill hole. As the drill hole is axially deformed, the distances between individual downhole anchors and the instrument head change, as do the distances between adjacent anchors. The distance changes measured by a multiple position borehole extensometer, for example, are reduced to functions of time, hole depth, anchor position, or other parameters of significance in terms of the structure under investigation.

Magma Copper Company's San Manuel SX-EW facility has operated since May, 1986. The original facility had a design capacity of 25,000 tons per year of electrowon copper cathode produced by processing pregnant leach solution from an open pit/heap leach operation. In 1988, the plant was expanded to 50,000 tons per year to incorporate processing in-situ leach solutions. This paper focuses primarily on the heap leaching area with regard to exploration, testing, feasibility, permitting, design and construction, and operating practices. Research utilizing surfactant leaching aids to enhance copper recovery is also discussed.

The interphase modification activity of 1,3-phenylene dimaleimide (also known as m-phenylene bismaleimide (BMI)) has been studied in composites based on magnesium hydroxide (60% w/w) and a polypropylene block copolymer (PPBC) that featured an ethylene-rich elastomeric impact modifier phase. BMI was found to be a unique product that led to significant simultaneous improvements in composite strength and toughness, even at the high filler levels. BMI modification was found to promote encapsulation of filler particles with the elastomeric phase of the PPBC together with formation of a PP boundary layer of increased crystalline content.

The Carlin Gold Mining Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Newmont Mining Corporation has been successfully operating an open pit gold mine and cyanide mill for approximately the past ten years. It is a unique operation in that about 20 percent of the mill feed is a carbonaceous ore refractory to cyanidation that must undergo a pretreatment stage developed for, and by, Carlin. The mine and plant are located in the Tuscarora mountain range is north-eastern Nevada near the towns of Carlin and Elko. Claims were staked at the minesite in 1961 and 1962. A drilling program was initiated late in 1962 and after drilling a total of 250,000 feet of rotary drill holes an estimated 9,300,000 tons of ore at a grade of 0.32 ounces of gold per ton was delineated.

The project now under construction will comprise a 1.2 km long raw water aqueduct, a major new 0.25million cubic metres per day water treatment works (with space for upgrading to 1.2Mm³/d), a 12.1 km long treated water aqueduct and a primary service reservoir. A computer-aided method for optimization of bench blast design in surface mines is presented. The design procedures basically consist of two steps. Firstly, a series of normalized, full- scale bench crater tests must be carried out in the field to find the optimum burden that produces the largest amount of acceptable fragments and other parameters that defines the effective fracture zone. Next, the locations and initiation sequence of blast-holes will be determined in such a way that each hole, at its time of firing, will be responsible for same amount of burden rock and will be in a position favorable to effective fracture of burden rock. A computer software "B.B." which can assist the second step of the design is fully introduced and its application is illustrated by an example.

Mines the world over tend to face a common range of problems. They begin life by trying to determine if there is sufficient product, usually under tons of earth, of sufficient quality to justify the operation. Once such a determination is made the mine must then be planned and brought into operation. Once operating most mines find that they are far away from suppliers, using very expensive equipment. Hence the three most common mining problems are, what does my ore body look like and how can it best be mined, how can I get sup- plies to my mine in the most cost effective way, and how do I control the vast dollars required to keep it all operating. Mincom started life by providing technical mining software to address the first of these problems and was very successful, particularly in the coal mining industry. However the company soon realized that if it was to become a significant provider of mining industry software it must also address the other major problem areas. Hence started what is now Mincom's largest business which is the provision of fully integrated mine management software with strong emphasis on materials and maintenance management to control costs. Mincom not only supplies the software but also provides a comprehensive implementation package using its own staff of experienced mining industry specialists. This papaer highlights some of Mincom's international implementation experiences.

The New South Ferry Terminal in the New York City Transit system represents an important milestone for the city. This is the first station designed and built in the 21st century. The design of the fire safety system included relying on Computational Fluid Dynamics to analyze the dispersion of heat and smoke, and modelling of people egress to determine the egress requirements. The project also looked into how to protect the structure from the heat exposure in order to meet the fire rating requirements. This paper provides an overview of the fire safety design approach taken to design the new South Ferry Terminal station in lower Manhattan and looks into fire modelling, structural fire protection, and station evacuation.

There are 3 steps in the process of forming a mine ventilation system, (1) selecting a reasonable ventilation pattern (included pit shaft arrangement); (2) optimizing of the ventilation network and (3) computing and outputting the flow splitting results of the network with the optimal ventilating equipments selected. In the past, the first step was relied on artificial decision-making. In order to design a common ventilation system, some ventilation experts were needed to participate or do some examinations. Even so, the design made was reasonable only for those experts. If there is a mistake in the first step, then even the followed 2 steps are best done, the losses are very difficult to retrieve. So that, the first step is very important. The development of expert systems provided an efficient means and tool for all engineering fields. This paper presents an expert system of selecting mine ventilation pattern and pit shaft arrangement. After testing many times, it is shown that the system can perform the first step of designing a mine ventilation system, and can help the experts doing their study works more efficiently.

Three spatially separate porphyry copper/molybdenum deposits are associated with the Tertiary Needle Creek igneous center in the southern Absaroka Mountains, Wyoming. In all three deposits a central zone containing disseminated copper and molybdenum is surrounded by a halo of small, discontinuous base and precious metal veins. Propylitically and phyllically altered rocks are common in all three mineralized areas, and potassically altered rocks are locally present. Fission- track age data from apatite and zircon indicate that mineralization occurred about 32-40 m.y. ago. Limited data suggest that the lead isotopes are nonradiogenic, similar to porphyry copper deposits elsewhere in the western United States. The complex igneous history of the Needle Creek center has involved several periods of intrusive and probably extrusive activity. lntrusive rocks are calc-alkalic and include andesite, granodiorite, diorite, quartz monzonite, dacite, and rhyodacite. Stocks (1-30 kmz in exposed area), radial dike swarms, and sills make up the presently exposed plutonic masses and constitute lower-level vent fillings in an old stratovolcano. The Needle Creek igneous center is located approximately midway along a northwest-trending belt of intrusive rocks extending more than 100 km along the central axis of the Absaroka volcanic field. The igneous and mineralized centers within this belt were probably localized at the intersections of northwest- trending Laramide and possibly Tertiary fracture systems and earlier northeast-trending Precambrian structures in the underlying basement rocks.

The Round Mountain gold mine, located 90 km (55 miles) north of Tonopah, Nevada began large-scale production in 1977. During 2008 Round Mountain Gold Corporation (RMGC) relocated the primary crusher facility approximately 300 meters (1,000 feet) to make room for the next phase of open pit mining activities. This facility was installed in 1988 and used a log-crib retaining wall and dump pocket RMGC selected Hilfiker Retaining Walls and Collins Engineers, Inc. to provide design and materials for a new 17 meter (56 feet) high Mechanically Stabilized Embankment (MSE) wall to support the haul trucks at the new location. The construction contractor was EarthTech West Ltd. of Norwood, Colorado. An MSE wall with a cast-in-place concrete face was chosen as a durable, yet less expensive alternative to the reinforced concrete dump pocket that was originally designed for the project. The arrangement of the MSE wall is of an unusual configuration to meet a variety of operational and maintenance requirements. This paper outlines the selection process, design, and construction of the MSE wall.

The literature of mine ventilation is very diverse in nature, widely interdisciplinary, and extremely international in scope. Important references are found in indexes, abstracts, government documents, technical reports, journals, conference and symposia proceedings, and monographs. In this decade computer searches of the literature have greatly aided researchers in finding needed items. There is, however, no convenient summary of recent English language literature in coal and non-coal mine ventilation. This paper attempts to fill that gap in the literature. Because of the worldwide provenance of the subject and the attendant publication deluge, this paper covers only current English language publications on ventilation. The writers have examined the field's English language abstracts, indexes, bibliographies, periodicals, technical reports, books, and symposia and conference, proceedings. The survey also considers the field's most important bibliographic data bases. It should be noted that addresses for many of the literature sources listed in the paper are given in the section on literature and data base information sources.

Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC's) are currently used extensively in the minerals industries; this paper looks beyond PLC's and that vintage of “computer control”--it looks toward what the authors see as new in the next five years. Topics covered include expert systems, neural networks, intelligent signal processing, and hierarchical controllers as applied to mining and mineral processing operations.

Teeter-bed (i.e., hindered-bed) separators are used throughout the mineral processing industry for both classification and density separation. The high capacity and sizing characteristics of these units make them ideal for feed preparation prior to coarse flotation (+0.100 mm) circuits. Teeter-bed separators are typically easy to control with two basic operating parameters including fluidization water rate and bed level. However, data show that these two parameters greatly interact with one another. Given this finding, a high-level automatic control scheme was developed and implemented on a full-scale separator. In addition, dialogue with plant operators has led to several simple changes to an already established design that improves operational and maintenance characteristics.

Combustion processes, comminution and materials handling can generate airborne particulates. Regulation of these particulates by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) is becoming progressively more stringent, and regulations will soon include ?nanoparticulates,? which are particles finer than 100 nanometers (0.1 mm). Nanoparticulates are believed to have significant negative health effects due to their high surface area and reactivity. Although it was argued that nanoparticulate concerns were only important for combustion, studies at Michigan Technological University have shown that materials handling and comminution release significant quantities of nanoparticles into the air. Laboratory studies have shown that the use of sodium metasilicate reduced airborne particles finer than 10 mm (PM10) by 86% and particles finer than 2.5 mm (PM2.5) by 80% for iron ore. Additional studies were conducted that revealed that nanoparticulate emissions were present in the types of operations conducted at pyrometallurgical facilities.

This work describes the effect of the degree of energy transferred to the pulp, during the conditioning stage, on gold flotation fines recovery, grade and kinetics, with three types of frother (Dowfroth 250, pine oil and MIBC) and amyl xanthate as collector. Best results show an increase in 24% recovery and 50% in concentrate grade, depending on the intensity of conditioning and type of frother (better with Dowfroth 250). For low or intermediate energies (0.5-1.5 kWhlm3 pulp), the fine particles adhere to larger ones, increasing the recovery due to a mixture of carrier (pyrite, in this case) and autogeneous carrier flotation and at higher shear (2-3 kWhlm3 pulp), gold fine particles aggregate themselves. These phenomena are demonstrated by measurements of flotation rate, true flotation (flotation by actual particle-bubble adhesion), and by the amount of entrained particles. Alternatives for this type of pulp conditioning and mechanisms involved are discussed.
