Acid neutralization titrations were applied to the characterization of soil and overburden for the control and prediction of acid rock drainage in the coal fields of the eastern United States in the 1970?s (1). These became known as the Sobek methods as a result of the early United States Environmental Protection Agency publication and the methods have been modified (2) to be adapted to many applications in the metal mining sector (3,4,5,6,), and, as a result, there are a large number of acid neutralization potential methods being used that are referred to as Modified Sobek methods. Standardization of neutralization potential methods for metal bearing ores and related materials based on carbonate carbon, rather than titration, commenced in the 1990?s through the American Society of Methods and Materials (ASTM) Committee E01 on Analytical Chemistry for Metal Ores and Related Materials Subcommittee E01.02 on Ores, Concentrates and Related Metallurgical Materials (7). A subcommittee section, E01.02.05 on Environmental Methods, was organized to coordinate the method and material standardization efforts of ASTM and the Acid Drainage Technology Initiative Metal Mining Sector (ADTI-MMS) Prediction Committee (8), which took on the project of standardization of the acid neutralization potential acidity titration method (ANPA) to supplement the carbonate carbon method in E1915 (9) for application to samples which have metal carbonates (10), in particular, which result in overestimation of the neutralization potential using the carbonate carbon methods (11).

The Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR) has funded a four-year research project to develop a computer model 'which will predict the hydrologic impacts of phosphate mining on surface and groundwater systems. The core of the model is an analytical geographic information system (SPANS) which integrates EPA's Hydrology Simulation Program Fortran (HSPF) surface water model with the McDonald-Harbaugh groundwater model (MODFLOW). The hydrologic model conducts both event and continuous annual Simulations driven by variable precipitation and temperature data. The model is currently being calibrated and will be ready for distribution to the user community in mid-1991.

There exists a wide array of industrial byproducts that produce beneficial responses in the soil/ plant environment. These materials range from clean-coal-technology residues produced during the generation of electric power (particularly those high in gypsum) to mineral fines produced by the aggregates industry (i.e., sand, gravel and crushed stone). A number of these materials are examined in relation to potential nutritional interactions in soils and crops with emphasis on trace elements. The significance of utilizing these materials in agriculture as a component of sustainable agricultural systems are discussed.

INTRODUCTION If a uranium mill worker is involved in an accident, analysis of excreta for uranium content and[in vivo] counting methods are used to estimate the extent of the possible exposure and to predict the pattern of uranium distribution among tissues (Spitz, [et al]., 1980). Interpretations of urinary excretion data are based on studies of human exposures to single uranium compounds including U02, U308, U03, UF4, U02F2 and UF6 (Alexander, 1974). Refined uranium ore (yellowcake) is a variable mixture of U03-NH3-H20 adducts (ammonium diuranate, ADU) and their thermal conversion product, U308. The variability in composition of yellowcake (Kalkwarf, 1979; Eidson and Mewhinney, 1980; Dennis, Blauer and Kent, 1981) complicates the interpretation of bioassay data from individuals that might have inhaled any single yellowcake material. A test system would be useful to estimate the dissolution behavior of a particular yellowcake aerosol inhaled by a worker and aid in the interpretation of bioassay data collected before and after an accident. A series of experiments was conducted for this purpose. The objectives of these studies were to: 1) develop specific criteria for comparing [in vitro] dissolution systems and 2) use the criteria to evaluate solvents, methods and experimental temperature and pH conditions used in previous studies. Dissolution experiments were conducted using different combinations of solvents, conditions and methods with a common yellowcake sample. Because little information is available from human yellowcake inhalation exposures to evaluate the [in vitro] results, criteria for evaluation of different tests were derived from a model of yellowcake dissolution in lung constructed from a number of cases in which humans were exposed to single uranium compounds known to be in yellowcake (Mercer, 1975). MATERIALS AND METHODS Materials The powder used in the tests was taken from one lot of yellowcake obtained from a commercial uranium mill. The same powder was previously designated as Mill D in Eidson and Mewhinney, 1980 and Mill 2 in Kalkwarf, 1979. The ammonium diuranate content was measured by infrared absorption to be 25% ± 1% (Eidson and Mewhinney, 1980). Solvents The compositions of the two biological fluid simulants used are compared in Table 1. Simulated lung fluid (SLF) (Kalkwarf, 1979; Dennis, Blauer and Kent, 1981) was chosen to simulate the composition [ ] of lung fluid as closely as practical (Moss, 1979). Simulated blood serum ultrafiltrate (SUF) (Eidson and Mewhinney, 1980) was chosen because of previous successful efforts to model human urinary excretion of inhaled plutonium aerosols (Kanapilly Raabe and Boyd, 1974) and the dissolution rate of 241Am02 in Beagle dogs (Mewhinney and Griffith, 1981). Major differences are that simulated lung fluid contains Mg2+ and a higher Ca2+ concentration than SUF and that SUF contains ammonium ion. Both solvents include protein substitutes; acetate is used in SLF, while amino acids are used in SUF. Both solvents include phosphate but the chelating agent diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) is included in SUF to prevent possible formation of insoluble uranyl phosphate precipitates that would result in an underestimation of solubility. In addition to the above solvents, modified solvent compositions were prepared to investigate the role of specific salts in yellowcake dissolution studies. Solutions of SUF (Table 1) were prepared without DTPA (SUF-DTPA) and without amino acids (SUF-amino acids). No solution excluded both DTPA and amino acids. The European Commission published its Communication of the Thematic Strategy on the sustainable use of natural resources ("Resource Strategy") on 21 December 2005. The Resource Strategy aims at reducing environmental impacts associated with resource use - called decoupling - in a growing European economy and worldwide. The impacts of unsustainable resource use include e.g. climate change due to fossil fuel use, land use and environmental degradation due to mineral extraction and processing, or overexploitation of soil and fish stocks. To decouple environmental impacts from economic growth, a life-cycle approach is adopted. It means that the environmental impacts are taking into account at each stage of the life cycle of a resource, avoiding that negative impacts are shifted to other environmental media, to other stages of the life cycle, or to other countries. Key to achieving decoupling are three factors: - More value - creating more value while using fewer resources (?resource productivity?); - Less impact - reducing overall environmental impact per unit of resources used (through ?cleaner? technologies and consumption pat-terns); - Better alternatives - substituting currently used resources with better alternatives. The paper focuses on the implementation actions of the Resource Strategy in particular related to the minerals industry: 1. The Data Centre on natural resources; 2. Indicators to measure progress; 3. The involvement of economic sectors to take concrete actions; 4. EU Member States involvement, focusing on resource uses with the most significant impacts; 5. The International Panel on the sustainable use of natural resources, set up together with UNEP. With its 25 years time horizon and its wide approach the Resource Strategy will have a co-ordinating function to ensure enhanced coherence and efficiency. The challenge will be to integrate this approach into all policies and decision-making.

Weir Minerals ? Linatex has developed a new approach to the dewatering of fine solids, particularly mine and process plant tailings and wastes. The Weir process, patented in 2009, uses standard process equipment in a standard flow sheet, but applies this approach to materials previously thought to be too fine to be dewatered with this type of equipment. The process can be applied to a wide range of materials, making lower moisture products that can be re-used elsewhere or sent to disposal. It has already been tested successfully on a small scale in Australia on coal fines, zinc mine tailings, red mud, iron ore tails, and copper/gold tailings. The principal factors affecting the solids recovery have been established as: 1. The % solids in the slurry feed to the process ? a higher % solids provides a higher recovery. 2. The particle size of the feed solids ? coarser feeds provide higher recoveries. The key factors affecting the % solids in the dewatered product have been determined to be: 1. The particle size of the dewatered product - coarser materials produce a higher % solids in the dewatered product. 2. The height of the discharge weir on the dewatering screen - a higher discharge weir on the dewatering screen also yields a higher % solids. 3. The angle of the dewatering screen. Setting the screen horizontal increases the travel rate, reduces the bed depth and reduces the % solids in the dewatered product. Back-sloping the screen up to 5° reduces the travel rate and increases the % solids in product. Eight plants ranging in size from 3 t/h to 40 t/h have been sold to a range of customers in China, for coal and iron ore tailings treatment. Australia has one plant, a small unit rated at 30 t/h of sand fines, and has recently completed test work on iron ore tailings for a dewatering plant rated at 135 t/h. Additional tests are under way with clients around Australia, to demonstrate the capabilities of this process on specific applications and to provide confirmation that materials can be processed successfully, before moving on to larger scale tests or full size plants. The advantages of the Weir process include - lower moisture in products, uses proven equipment, lower capital and operating costs, lower maintenance costs, reduced power consumption, compact footprint, can be used in parallel or in series with existing equipment, modular design to facilitate redundancy or expansion, efficient water recovery and simpler water management, reduced cement in backfill mixes, smaller tailings disposal footprint, reduced earthworks requirements, much lower seepage losses, more stable tailings mass, progressive site rehabilitation, reduced impact on local wildlife, reduced risk of dam wall failure, and reduced environmental monitoring and compliance costs.

Research was conducted to develop a simulation and animation model for an aggregate (sand and gravel) mine operation. This model can assist the mine engineers to investigate and consider the various options of haulage systems which are critical for the mine operation productivity. Discrete-event system simulation studies can be used for the typical haulage issues that mining engineers are often faced with: using truck fleet haulage, conveyor belts, or a combination of both. The simulation has identified some strengths and weaknesses in the current loading and hauling fleet of the mine, and has resulted in some suggestions for improving the system. The simulation includes animation of the operation. Animation is needed to enhance the benefit of any mine simulation model. By combining the visual power of animation with a mine simulation, a complete picture of the mine system is obtained and displayed. The mine is modeled and animated using GPSS/H® and PROOF Professional®, both of which have shown great applicability in discrete mining simulation projects.

In 1987, LAC Minerals (USA), Inc. conducted a high resolution helicopter electromagnetic (EM) and magnetic geophysical survey on the Ortiz Mine Grant, New Mexico. The primary purpose of this survey was to assist in geologic mapping of a major structural zone, the Tijeras-Canoncito Fault System (TCFS). This structure is a very important ore- controlling feature in the area. Geophysical signatures over known deposits was a secondary goal of the survey, but direct detection of mineralization was not anticipated. The TCFS was revealed to be a complex, branching and anastomosing system of faults which locally form the bounding structures of a graben. The geophysical survey guided subsequent geologic mapping by redirecting field investigations, and geophysically redefining some features which previously had been only partly defined.

In the crushing and grinding of metallics for beneficiation, the sizing is normally done to liberate the metals or sulphides for further processing to improve recoveries of the basic metals or minerals. The objective is to reduce the ore in size through various closely controlled stages to that degree of fineness which gives an economic liberation of valuable mineral, but which avoids as much as possible the production of sliming fractions. A different philosophy applies to the crushing and grinding of Gypsum. Our requirements normally demand controlled grinding and/or crushing of the material not only to a fineness suitable for further processing of the mineral into end products, but to produce various sizes of material which are them- selves saleable products. The majority of our tonnage ultimately ends up in stucco for Wallboard. Therefore, our mineral reduction is normally designed toward this end, but it is done in a manner that permits drawing off inter- mediate products to meet various Customer requirements. This forces us into compromises at times in our equipment installations, and our equipment must sometimes be more versatile and complex than we would like it to be. We try to process our basic rock, Gypsum, for the most efficient size reduction. We market 5 to 6 different sizes intermediate to the end product, which generally is the fineness of material to be used for stucco for Wallboard, and we do this with controlled crushing, grinding and sizing cycles of the material. To summarize, we use a different philosophy of crushing and grinding than the metallic field which uses comminution or crushing and grinding to improve recovery, whereas we choose our equipment to crush and grind primarily for product performance.

A dust concentration meter has been developed with Australian coal industry support for the measurement of total airborne dust concentrations capable of causing explosions in underground coal mines. The instrument, The University of Queensland Dust Meter (UQDM), measures the effective dielectric constant of a mixture of coal dust and air that is drawn between the plates of a capacitor, the capacitance of which is measured by a ratio-transformer bridge and synchronous detector system. This technique measures small changes in capacitance to approximately 1 part in 106. The unique design of the capacitor sensor permits a precise volume of coal dust and air mixture to be sampled. This arrangement overcomes difficulties inherent in optical dust measurement. The meter is portable, battery powered, incorporates data logging and has intrinsic safety approval. The operation of the meter is discussed. The system is designed to monitor dust concentrations along a coal mining face and provide concentration profiles leading to the development of suppression strategies. If data from underground tests are available, the meter's potential to contribute to establishing safe working conditions underground will be discussed. Other areas of potential application of the measurement technique are also examined.

The chemical reactions that occur within a copper-leach recovery system are discussed, and the impact on the overall acid balance is evaluated. Both oxide and sulfide mineralogy are addressed, and their effects on acid consumption, generation and solution buffering are presented. Two case studies that apply the discussed chemistry show the practicality of using a computer spreadsheet acid-balance model for the early planning and design of copper-leach systems.

Now it is time co once again improve the quality and types of coal products coming from future coal preparation plants to meet the changing needs of our society. Clean Coal Technology, along with federal support provided, is forcing our industry to provide cleaner coal products for industrial applications. Liquid fuels from coal is just one of many new products from a coal preparation plant that has a ready market in the transportation sector. UCC Research Corporation is developing these new liquid coal products and this paper will describe the progress and the new slate of coal products to be provided from future preparation plants.

Thirty years ago it was possible to locate a quarry site for crushed rock for concrete aggregate by finding the nearest solid rock bluff accessible by road, But times have changed and the location of a quarry site to furnish crushed rock for concrete aggregate now has become rather complicated, Although both sand and gravel can be used for aggregate, this discussion will be confined to crushed rock in the regions around a metropolitan area. Let us assume that a consultant has been retained to advise on the desirability, and the possibility, of opening a new quarry within a given area. The problems are geological and ecological. Since the geological problems are simpler, they will be discussed first. Generally, the first step is to make a market study of competitive aggregate sources within the projected area. Assuming that the quality of aggregate to be sold by competitors as well as their mining costs will, within narrow limits, be the same, the problem becomes essentially a study of haulage costs from established quarries into the projected new area. Since haulage cannot be effected along straight lines and since each quarry operator may have different unit haulage costs, a map showing lines of increasing cost intersecting points on roads available for truck haulage radiating from competitive quarries can be rather complicated. The nature of adsorbed calcium carboxylates (oleate and stearate) has been investigated by in-situ/ex-situ Fourier transform infrared internal reflection spectroscopy (FTIR/IRS). Previous spectroscopic studies in alkaline solution have shown that adsorbed carboxylate is characterized by a C-O stretching vibration at about 1550 em?1 for less than monolayer coverage. Similar results were found in this study. More specifically, in this study such a singlet at 1550 cm-1 was found for LB monolayers of calcium distearate transferred as a condensed layer at a high film pressure to the surfaces of fluorite and germanium. Normally the spectrum of bulk calcium distearate reveals a doublet at 1575 and 1540 cm-1, characteristic of a three dimensional 7-fold coordination for calcium carboxylate complexes. This doublet is generally found for carboxylate multilayers formed by spontaneous adsorption at the surface of calcium minerals. In this regard, the spectral evidence suggests that whenever the calcium dicarboxylate is constrained at a surface as a condensed layer, the 7-fold coordination can not be satisfied and the surface carboxylate is forced into a two dimensional symmetrical coordination with a singlet at 1550 cm-1. On the other hand, if the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayer calcium distearate film is transferred at a low film pressure the doublet is observed. This analysis is further confirmed by the spectral results for LB transferred calcium distearate monolayers at a hydrophobic silicon surface. Even though these are condensed monolayers formed at high film pressure, the carboxylate group, oriented away from the surface, is no longer constrained by the surface force field, and thus exhibits the characteristic doublet of the bulk calcium distearate salt.

Paste is a high density mixture of water and fine solid particles with a relatively low water content (10-25%) such that the mixture has a consistency as measured by the ASTM slump cone test from slightly greater than zero up to nearly 12 inches (305mm). Particles of different size classes will not segregate or settle when the paste is not being agitated or when it is stationary in a pipeline. Cement may be a component of paste. Larger particles of aggregate can generally be added to a paste without greatly changing the pipeline transport characteristics. A paste may bleed water slightly when it is allowed to be motionless for periods of up to several hours, but the solids do not become so dense that the paste cannot be easily re-fluidized. The dividing line between the definition of a high density slurry and a paste is not sharp. It is a practical matter that must be considered when designing a pipeline transportation system. If the pipeline is very short, there is very little risk of plugging the pipeline with a high density slurry when flow is stopped for short time periods. With longer pipelines the mixture must remain stable without motion for periods as long as several hours to avoid pipeline plugging. The fine particles in a paste mixture can be composed of mine tailings or naturally-occurring clays, silts and fine sands. The mineralogy of the particles thus can have a wide variety from quartz and feldspar to clays, micas and even salts.

Golden Sunlight Mines Inc. operates an open-pit gold mine and cyanidation plant about 11km (7 miles) northeast of Whitehall, MT. Golden Sunlight is a subsidiary of Placer Dome US Inc. Mining is accomplished with conventional open pit drilling, blasting and hauling methods. The mining rate is about 102 kt/d (113,000 stpd). Gold occurs as fine-grained disseminations in a pipe-shaped breccia and in immediately adjacent country rock. The ore body is low grade, averaging 2 g/t (0.059 oz per st) of gold. The metallurgical plant uses conventional carbon-in-pulp (CIP) technology. Daily throughput averages 6.5 kt (7000 st). Recoveries are enhanced through a sand tailing retreatment facility while a preaeration process reduces operating costs. The low grade ore dictates that maximum mill throughput at the desired grind size be maintained. Therefore, in October 1988, an Armco Autometrics (now Denver Autometrics) particle size monitor (PSM) 400 was commissioned. The PSM 400 is an on-line instrument. It measures particle size and percent solids in a slurry stream. The PSM pulls its own sample, deareates the sample and passes it through diametrically opposed ultrasonic sensors. The unit uses ultrasonic sound to measure the deareated slurry stream's particle size and percent solids.

"INTRODUCTION Barrick Goldstrike underground mine is located in Northern Nevada on the Carlin trend. The underground mine produces approximately 1.5 to 1.8 million tons a year and approximately 400,000 ounces of gold a year. The mine is comprised of two main mining methods, underhand drift and fill and long hole stopeing. The mass blast project stated in 2012 as Value in Use project between Barrick, Southwest Energy and Orica, the goal of this project is to be able to blast an entire drilled stope in one blasting event instead of taking multiple blasts. This will improve productivity by eliminating intermediate blasts, reducing additional blast time, eliminate drill hole cleaning due to the previous blast. Project implantation started in the fourth quarter of 2013 and mass blasting has been common practice throughout all of 2014. STOPPING PRACTICE AT GOLDSTRIKE BEFORE MASS BLAST PROJECT The production from the Goldstrike mine is approximately 70% from stopes. The timely completion of all stoping blocks is imperative to maintaining the plan, delays in the execution of any particular block can have detrimental ripple down effects as neighbouring stoping blocks become delayed. Before the implementation of this project the standard practice for Goldstrike was to: 1. Drill the entire stope 2. Blast a bottom shot, normally between 10 feet and 20 feet off the bottom of the slot rings. This would be mucked out before the next shot 3. Blast a pull through shot, this included the raise and one or two production rings. Again mucking this out before the next shot 4. Blast production rings, one or two more blasts depending on stope size. In most cases between each of these blasts the holes in the other rings of the stope would have to be cleaned. This meant either cleaning manually using air and water, or mechanically cleaning with a bench drill. In many cases this resulted in delays in completing the stoping block."
