SUMMARY La Granja copper deposit, in terms of volume, is among the five largest deposits in the world and represents reserves of three thousand million tones. The field consists of a 40 m. thick layer of copper lying over the secondary ore and further down the primary copper. The flotation process has indicated a recovery rate of 88 to 90 percent and concentrates of 27 to 32 percent of copper. The acid leaching process of low grade ore produces financially acceptable results. To carry out the project, it is necessary to build long distance pipelines and a port. Both the Feasibility Study and the Environmental Impact Study on the project have been approved by the Peruvian government. INTRODUCTION La Granja is located in the district of Querecoto, province of Chota, in the department of Cajamarca, in the Northwest of the country (Figure 1). Geographically it is situated on the eastern slopes of the Andean mountains at an altitude of 2,000 to 2,700 m.a.s.1. (Figure 1). The site is an 8 hour car ride from the city of Chiclayo, capital of the department. The first 60 km. are over a paved road and the remaining distance is over a narrow hard dirt road. The copper porphyry of La Granja was discovered between 1969 to 1971 during some geochemical prospecting activities carried out by the State mining institution, Ingeomin (currently Ingemmet). From 1978 to 1982, Ingemmet continued with its geochemical and geophysical studies supported by a German technical assistance program. A total of 19 bore- holes were drilled (5,814 m.) and a 90 m. long tunnel made. This study calculated reserves of 175 million MT. In 1993, Minero Peru drew up a technical-financial study based on the above studies and proposed a 12 year extraction operating program: 20,000 MT daily using the leaching process, followed by 13 years of operation using the flotation process with the same daily volumes. "The Regional Connector project is a complex subway light-rail project that runs through the heart of downtown Los Angeles, CA. The design-build contract was awarded in April 2014 to the Regional Connector Constructors (RCC), a joint venture between Skanska USA Civil West California District Inc. and Traylor Brothers Inc., and their designer team consisting of Hatch Mott McDonald (HMM) and subconsultants. The project broke ground on Sept. 30, 2014 and is expected to be completed in winter 2021-2022. The main components of the project consist of 6.4-m (21-ft) diameter twin-bored tunnels, three crosspassages, a 87-m (287-ft) long crossover SEM cavern, three new underground stations, and cut-and-cover tunnels along South Flower, Alameda and 1st Streets. The project map is shown in Fig. 1. The design and construction challenges associated with each of these main components are discussed in the following sections.Project designTunnels. The Regional Connector tunnels are located primarily within the Fernando formation consisting predominantly of extremely weak to very weak, massive, clayey siltstone. About 305 m (1,000 ft) of tunnels on the eastern end are in alluvium and mixed face of Fernando formation and alluvium. The tightest curve of the tunnel alignment is 178 m (583 ft) in radius. The tunnels were designed with a reinforced precast concrete tunnel lining (PCTL) to be used with an earth balance pressurized (EPB) tunnel boring machine. The PCTL ring is 5.5 m (18 ft-10 in.) inside diameter, 27 cm (10.5 ft) thick, 1.5 m (5 ft) long, and consists of five segments and a key. The segments were designed with 6,500 psi concrete, 80 ksi yield strength wire rebar, convex joint surfaces to enhance seismic performance, and a dosage of 1.7 lbs polypropylene microfibers per cubic yard of concrete for fire resistance. The rings are designed with a right ring and left ring pattern and a taper of 3.8 cm (1.5 ft) to allow for alignment curve negotiation. Figure 2 shows typical sections of the PCTL. The structural lining design was modeled using FLAC 3D. Four consecutive rings were modeled with 32 dowel connection. Loading considered in the lining design includes temporary ground load during excavation, long-term ground loads, seismic loads and train loads. The seismic loads on the PCTL were simulated with the racking deformation applied at vertical boundaries of the model. Due to variation of geologic condition along the tunnel alignment and different surcharge requirements, three different types of reinforcement (typical, heavy and extra heavy) were designed. The typical type PCTL was required in Fernando formation, the heavy type was required in alluvium or mixed-face condition, and the extra heavy type was required in alluvium and underneath the Japanese Village Plaza where a surcharge of 1,000 psf was required."

Se suministran los procedirnientos preliminares para seleccionar y diseñar tanto los ciclones como las bombas, y se facilita con algún detalle un ejernplo de cálculo para un hipotético circuito de molienda. En general, debe consultarse a 1os proveedores de ciclones y bombas para determinar un disefio definitivo. Algunos suministradores de ciclones emplean normalmente computadores digitales para el diseño definitivo con objeto de asegurar una gran precision.

Si define la simulación digital y las técnicas de simulación son revisadas. La metodologia tipica conlleva la selección de modelos, el ajuste o reajuste de los datos primarios, la selección de una estrategia de acoplamiento, la valoración de la precisión del modelo en un sentido estadistico, y el desarrollo de estructura de simulación ejecutiva. La simulación sirve de ayuda para los ingenieros de procesos para evaluar la viabilidad de un esquema de flujo propuesto y el efecto de la modificación de un flujograma ya existente. Por otro lado, la simulación juega un papel importante en la optimación "off-line" y en la evaluación de estrategias de control de circuitos alternativos. Son presentados varios ejemplos para ilustrar estas utilizaciones para la simulación, incluyendo aplicaciones en los circuitos de trituración, circuitos de molienda y circuitos de flotación. Es de opinión de los autores que, dentro de la próxima década, las plantas de proceso de minerales serán estudiadas rutinariamente a través de una simulación digital durante las etapas preliminares de diseño. La simulación constituirá un importante componente en la toma de decisiones de un proceso.

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) performed a series of lab tests to evaluate the respirable dust removal capacity of an industrial air-cleaning fan. Limestone and coal dust were tested separately in NIOSH’s full-scale drill table simulator at the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD). Gravimetric samplers with Dorr-Oliver Cyclones and 37-mm filters were used at two upstream and four downstream locations inside and outside of the drill shroud chamber. There were six tests performed for both the limestone and coal dust experiments. In the limestone tests, an average respirable dust concentration of 98.86 mg/m3 was achieved upstream of the air-cleaning fan. The filter results show that the averaged respirable limestone dust reductions were 7.84%, 8.81%, 10.94%, and 18.02% at the four sampling locations downstream of the fan. In the coal tests, upstream samplers achieved an average of 129.03 mg/m3 of respirable coal dust. The averaged dust reductions were 9.54%, 9.83%, 18.54%, and 19.21% at the four downstream sampling points. The results indicate limited cost benefits of using this technology because of the relatively low dust reductions determined from this laboratory study.

Long-term anaerobic biochemical treatment for draindown of residual solutions is a cost-effective way to close a heap-leach pad. This article presents a laboratory evaluation of anaerobic biochemical treatment of cyanide heap-leach pad solutions. The traditional approach to heap-leach pad closure is to rinse the pads with multiple pore volumes of fresh or recycled treated water. The effluent from an initial rinse is often treated and recirculated until the solutions passed through the heap meet the appropriate numeric and narrative water quality standards. Column rinsing tests are completed during project planning to determine the number of pore volumes of fresh or recycled treated water required to rinse the pad to meet long-term closure requirements. A traditional closure plan generally includes provisions to sample the rinse effluent and rinsed solids (the Meteoric Water Mobility, Procedure or USEPA 1312) to verify that chemical requirements are being met.

Coal mines in the United States are the most productive in the world in terms of efficient labor employment. This is because of an abundance of workable coal beds, large infusions of capital, improved management practices and continuing competitive pressures. The standard unit of measurement for labor productivity is expressed as tons/manshift, although for underground mines, operators often refer to tons per machineshift. Articles written concerning labor productivity generally focus on measurement techniques, safety considerations, application of technology and training. This article will illustrate by example the impact of labor efficiency (or inefficiency) on the ultimate selling price of coal, f.o.b. mine site. During the past several years, the coal industry has seen significant improvement in labor use. Figure 1 shows the trends in productivity for all active mines in the United States from 1985 through 1994. Productivity in 1985 was 20.1 t/manshift (22.1 st/ manshift). This factor has increased almost linearly throughout that period to 37.5 t/manshift (41.2 st/manshift). This is a 7.2% annual compound growth rate.

[Full-scale laboratory experiments were performed to evaluate the effect of ventilation and water spray pressure on the potential dust capture efficiency of a ventilation system comprised of blowing ventilation and an underboon scrubber. The tests were performed for a 1.52-m (5-ft) roof height and 2.36 m-3/s (5000 cfm) blowing ventilation volume, and a 2.44-m (8-ft) roof height and 4.72 m3/s (10.000 cfm) blowing ventilation volume at three face positions of the miner. The scrubber suction rate was varied for the tests to study the effect of scrubber flow rate on capture efficiency. The airflow patterns and scrubber efficiency were determined by performing tracer gas tests. Tracer gas was released through a manifold placed in front of the rotating miner drum. The gas was sampled in a grid fashion using a real-time multi-point gas sampling system. The capture efficiency of the scrubber was evaluated based an the peak gas concentration of the gas laden air drawn through the scrubber and the amount of gas passing, through the scrubber as a fraction of the gas released at the face. The data were analyzed to yield scrubber peak concentrations, potential exposures at various operator locations and the gas removal percentage (GRP). The underboom scrubber appears to work best in the end sump position, relative to the start sump and start slab positions. The capture efficiency scrubber was higher for 2.44-m (8-ft) roof heights compared to 1.52-m (5-ft) roof heights. The data also showed that the scrubber air discharged behind the mining machine may be drawn into the face area by the action of the blowing ventilation system, resulting in recirculation.]

The laboratory tests evaluated the bag?s effectiveness to contain dust and the effect on canister filter loading in both a bag and bagless condition. The dust emissions from the collector?s exhaust were also measured in each condition during laboratory testing and show that nearly 100% of the test dust fed into the collector was captured by the dust bags. Loading and pressure drop on the dust collector?s canister filter is greatly decreased when using the bags, enabling longer periods of drilling without filter removal/cleaning. The field results showed that, even though dust standards were met, respirable dust in exhausted emissions was reduced around the bolter. Laboratory and field results show that benefits from use of the bags are realized in all areas of operator exposure.

A detailed account is given of the spectral ratio laboratory method for the determination of seismic velocity and attenuation through rock cores under simulated in-situ stress conditions. An account of a computer program called AUTOQ is described for automatic processing of a complete set of laboratory results. Some of these results are shown and discussion is directed to- wards the suitability of in-situ velocity or attenuation measurements in determining rockmass condition or stress regime.

The primary factors influencing the: fragmentation process were found to be: bit spacing, bit geometry, depth of cut, and cutting drum rotational speed. This paper presents the influence of these parameters in achieving optimum energy consumption and minimizing dust generation during rock fragmentation process. Three bits were used simultaneously on Indiana limestone while the bit tip angle was varied from 60° to 90°. Bit spacing was varied from 2.54 cm (1 in.) to 5.08 cm (2 in.) while the cutting process was assessed for varying cutting depths. Respirable dust generated during the course of the experiments was analyzed utilizing cascade impactors. Assessment of these parameters has led to a better understanding of the cutting mechanism by continuous miners in terms of energy consumption and dust generation.

The primary factors influencing the fragmentation process were found to be bit spacing, bit geometry, depth of cut and cutting-drum rotational speed. This paper presents a discussion of the effects of these parameters in achieving optimum energy consumption and minimizing dust generation during rock fragmentation. The removal of rock ridges/walls between adjacent grooves is analyzed with three hits mounted simultaneously on the cutting head, while the bit tip angle was varied from 600 to 900. Bit spacing was varied from 25.4 to 50.8 mm (1 to 2 in.) while the cutting process was assessed for varying cutting depths. Respirable dusts generated during the course of the experiments were analyzed utilizing cascade impactors. Assessment of these parameters has led to a better understanding of the cutting mechanism of continuous miners in terms of energy consumption and dust generation. A review of the literature revealed that a considerable amount of research has been carried out on rockcutting processes. Many authors agree that the mechanical cutting efficiencies of mining machines (e.g., continuous miners, shearers and road headers) are affected by a host of parameters. Some of these parameters are machine controlled, some are operator controlled, while others are uncontrollable. Efforts were focused on understanding the influence of parameters such as bit spacing, cutting depth, attack angle, bit type, drum speed, bit geometry (i.e., tip size, shape and tip angle) and rock type on the cutting process efficiency in terms of specific energy consumption and respirable dust generation (Strehig?? et al., 1975, Hanson et al., 1979, Khair et al., 1989). Roepke et al. (1976) in an attempt to study the dust and energy generated during coal cutting using point attack bits found that the dust and the specific energy consumed both decrease as the depth of cut increases. The four fundamental stages of dust generation luring rock fragmentation are identified by Zipf and Bieniawski (1989). Coal breakage by various types of wedges was assessed by Evans and Pomeroy (1966) in an extensive experimental study on British coals. Yet the industry today requires further attention and guidance to optimize the energy consumption and dust generation during the rockbreakage process. This paper attempts to give a better understanding of the influence of some of the parameters listed above and focuses on further improvement in the rock-cutting process. The specific energy consumed for different types of bits used and the respirable dust generated are analyzed in the context of the variation of a few other parameters. Laboratory investigation The experiments were performed in the Rock Mechanics Laboratories located at West Virginia University. A rock-cutting simulator designed and fabricated by Khair (1984) was utilized for this purpose. The details of this machine are available in the literature (see Khair 1984). For this study, a series of preliminary experiments was carried out to determine the optimum cutting frame advance speed. This was intended to facilitate a maximum cut depth of 31.75 mm (1.25 in.) at an advance rate of 0.525 mm/s (0.0207 ips) for all types of bits being used and various bit spacings being considered. To look into the cutting-process efficiency of a continuous miner in the laboratory, several parameters of influence are being considered. Besides the bit-geometry parameters, machine- and operator-controlled parameters, such as spacing of bits on the cutting head, the cutting head rotational speed and the total cutting depth during an experiment, are varied. At the time this paper was written, only part of the completed experiments were ana¬lyzed, and a number of experiments were still being carried out following an orthogonal fractional factorial experimental plan to assess the effect of all of the above¬mentioned parameters on the cutting efficiency in terms of energy consumption and dust generation. The separating efficiency of a flotation column is largely limited by the degree of back mixing of tailings into the froth zone, and the recovery is limited by the degree of short-circuiting of feed to the tailings. Current columns are typically constructed very tall (30 to 40 ft) to limit the effects of back mixing and short-circuiting. These effects can also be reduced in a much shorter column, provided that the flow in the column approaches plug flow. In this work, horizontal baffles were shown to improve the performance of a 6 -ft laboratory-scale flotation column treating a poorly floatable coal. Tests with variations in the baffle positions showed that baffles are needed both above and below the feed inlet to achieve the greatest benefit. Tracer tests with a fluorescent dye in water showed that baffles reduce the amount of feed water entrained in the froth at any given coal recovery.

Current columns are typically made very tall, on the order of 30-40 feet, in order to limit the effects of backmixing and short-circuiting. These effects can also be reduced in a much shorter column, provided that the flow in the column approaches plug-flow. In this work, horizontal baffles were shown to improve the performance of a 6-foot tall laboratory-scale flotation column treating a difficult-to-clean, heavily oxidized coal. Tests with variation in the position of the baffles showed that for the greatest benefit, baffles are needed both above and below the feed inlet. Tracer tests with a fluorescent dye water tracer showed that the addition of the baffles reduced the amount of feed water entrained into the froth at any given coal recovery.
