The multi-circular face shield (MFS) is a new type of tunnelling machine for construction of the special cross section and has been put to practical use in 1988. The MF shield has two circular faces partially overlapped in a single shield machine and can construct the cross section shaped like glasses for the double track railway. And it is possible to equip two or more cicular faces horizontally or vertically, if necessary. During the development of the MF shield the experiments have been carried out for the purpose of estimating the excavatability and the face stability of the MF shield. As a result it was confirmed that the both types of MF shield (one with double faces aligned horizontally and the other with double faces aligned vertically) has higher performance in the face stability and lower value in the cutter torque and the total thrust than the conventional circular shield.

A description is given of an experimental ventilation control system designed, built, and tested by WVU under United States Bureau of Mines sponsorship. A description is given of the control, system used and the mine-wide microcomputer-based ventilation monitoring system used with it. Test results of experiments conducted with this system at Eastern Associated Coal Corporation's Federal No. 2 underground coal mine are presented. In addition, a brief description is given of a new microprocessor based system presently being tested.

ERIC GUTIERREZ, Knowledgescape: Our next speaker is Randy Ynchausti. He's the director of development, Knowledgescape systems division, of EIMCO Process Equip- ment Company. The title of Randy's talk is "An Expert Control System for Phosphate Beneficiation." RANDY YNCHAUSTI: System integration. How does the systems integrator survive when caught between plant engineers, plant management, and third-party engineering firms, and stay within the budget of the corporate goals? I'm not sure that anyone knows how to do all of that on one project. Results are critical when we talk about how systems integrators work with operating people, how the operating people want systems integrators to work with them, and how both groups work together so that at the end of a project, you have been provided with solutions that meet your needs and solve your problems at a fair price. How does the integrator's role change when working with different types of professionals, such as plant managers, plant engineers, engineering firms, or other system integrators? Finally, what is the dynamics of people working with machines and providing services and solving needs? The average number of employees per pound of copper processed has decreased significantly during the past 15 years. I would dare to generalize and say that the average number of employees per whatever unit of measure we have in whatever industry we work in has decreased over the last 15 years. From a system integrator's perspective, there are some clients who lack a bit of internal expertise as corporate downsizing occurs, and that's one reason why we go out to system integrators or third-party vendors and buy things from them to solve our problems. Downsizing really amounts to savings, but more than that, I think Brian expressed this and I agree with him, it also amounts to a cost. Unfortunately, most of us count the savings and none of us count the cost in that approach. It's easy to count the savings, which is one reason why we count it so quickly. Maybe that also accounts for why we set our pencils down so quickly after we get that dollar value. Maybe we should pick that pencil up every once in awhile and refigure the expense, the cost to us, and determine what we're going to pay during the next year or two or three in losing that expense, or that staff. The expert system for coal preparation plant design mainly solves the crux--separation flowsheet design and optimization of product structure. There are twelve basic flowsheets available in the system which are representative of financial plants. The system can select better flowsheets automatically according to the property of feed and scale of plant. Then, it can choose the best flowsheet and product model from the better flowsheets through analysis and optimum calculation. The expert system is made up in Turbo Pascal 6.0 and consists of three sub-systems: Lump and grain coal system, coal slimes processing system, and raw coal system. Several representation methods, such as production rule, procedure, and object-oriented programming, are used to express the expert's knowledge in the system. To decide the optimum product structure, Zangwill's method is used to make an advance product model. The expert system has the performance of interpretation strategy, by 'tracer" technology and pre-arrangement text, and of learning new expert's knowledge.

Wastewaters generated during the extraction of gold from the ore can contain a variety of contaminants such as cyanide, heavy metals and arsenic. Proper management of these wastewaters is therefore necessary to minimize the negative impact of gold mining and milling operations on the environment. The Wastewater Technology Centre (WTC),located in Burlington, Ontario, Canada, has been involved in several studies related to the evaluation of various effluent treatment technologies which are relevant to the treatment and proper management of gold mill effluents. These studies have included bench and pilot scale tests, and the evaluation offull-scale systems. Furthermore, the WTC staff developed protocols for cyanide analysis in gold mill effluents, and a mathematical model for predicting the degradation of cyanide in tailings ponds. The information generated by the WTC staff has been referenced in several reports and papers published over the last ten years (Schmidt et.al. 1982, Simovic & Snodgrass 1989, Whittle et.al. 1989, Zaidi et.al. 1989, Zaidi et.al. 1991). Recently, the WTC has started to develop a micro­computer based expert system for use by decision makers in the gold mining industry and relevant government agencies who are involved in process design, process evaluation, costing, evaluation of the best practicable technology, approval of suggested effluent management systems, and so on. This paper presents some relevant background information and a discussion of the latest version of the expert system being developed by the WTC.

Mining engineers in charge of open pit mine planning very often face decision making situations dealing with the selection of the most economical method for the removal of overburden. Ripping versus conventional drilling and blasting are the options considered. The choice of a particular overburden removal method depends upon the physic-mechanical properties of the overburden material as well as the various cost factors involved in the process. The analysis of techno-economical factors involved in different methods of overburden removal needs detailed study and investigation by a technical expert. But the expert system "Fragmentation System Design" has been created in a way such that it will help and expedite the decision making process relating to overburden removal in surface mines. Furthermore, this expert system can be used for detailed design aspects of overburden removal in open pit mines.

"The development process of Metal Resources Technical and Economic Evaluation Expert System (MRTEEES) is introduced in the aspects of requirements analysis, design of the expert system, main functions of the expert system and features of the expert system. The system is based on C/B/S mixed mode and uses ASP.NET technology with .Net Framework being chosen as the development platform and metal resources database providing data support at the bottom layer. The system is an auxiliary management system for metal resources technical and economic evaluation and has the basic functions of auxiliary decision analysis, metal resources database management, data management and comprehensive query. Technical and economic evaluation model can be set up by users independently according to at which stage a project is, mainly including exploration stage, development stage and production stage, and according to the mining methods, for example underground mining, surface mining and in-situ leaching mining. Then, the technical and economic evaluation parameters can be generated. By inputting the value of each parameter in a simple and convenient way, the evaluation results can be directly calculated out and shown in the form of diagrams among others, and feasibility evaluation report can also be automatically generated, making the technical and economic evaluation process accurate and efficient. As the system can achieve the functions of scenario analysis, sensitivity analysis, shareholder’s returns analysis, horizontal comparison of different projects, it can improve the ability of project senior decision makers for rapid response to the rival and meet the demand of pricing negotiations. IntroductionWith the arrival of a new round of industrialization upsurge in both developing and developed countries, growth of demand for metal resources is entering a new stage. Population involved in the new industrialized countries is about four times that of all previous industrialized countries, implying resource consumption increases dramatically both in speed and in quantity. It is a must to seize the strategic opportunity of developing and utilizing metal resources around the world to lay abundant resource base for national industrialization. Objectively speaking, global configuration of metal resources is an inevitable tend. Presently, many issues, for example, resources exploration, mining, merge of mining companies, metal trades, mining financing, etc., generally show the feature of globalization. For the reality that competition for metal resources is becoming fiercer, industry standards of mineral resources will undoubtedly be improved. Occupying large scale mineral resources with high grade and developing them with low cost is the base for the survival of mining companies and metal resources merchants. With the growing demand of global investment in mineral resources exploration, which is at the upstream of the industry chain, geological exploration industry is promising. Globally building market relationships for mineral resources exploration companies is key to their sustainable development. Developing large and super-large deposit with low cost is also an important approach to enhancing core competence of a country or an enterprise. Mining companies around the world are rushing to purchase mineral resources globally. However, in different countries, economic, financial and tax systems for mineral resources vary greatly, and mining and processing techniques, technical parameters and equipment selection also change a lot. Thus, pro-phase research work is necessary for feasibility evaluation of mineral resources projects and it can be time wasting if taken in the traditional way. In the past, prefeasibility analysis with CES has involved the solution of regression equations. The new generation of CES uses an object-oriented expert system in a Windows? environment. There are 3 steps in the process of forming a mine ventilation system, (1) selecting a reasonable ventilation pattern (included pit shaft arrangement); (2) optimizing of the ventilation network and (3) computing and outputting the flow splitting results of the network with the optimal ventilating equipments selected. In the past, the first step was relied on artificial decision-making. In order to design a common ventilation system, some ventilation experts were needed to participate or do some examinations. Even so, the design made was reasonable only for those experts. If there is a mistake in the first step, then even the followed 2 steps are best done, the losses are very difficult to retrieve. So that, the first step is very important. The development of expert systems provided an efficient means and tool for all engineering fields. This paper presents an expert system of selecting mine ventilation pattern and pit shaft arrangement. After testing many times, it is shown that the system can perform the first step of designing a mine ventilation system, and can help the experts doing their study works more efficiently.

A longwall-based coal mine in Australia, referred to in this paper as AusMine Colliery, experienced windblasts resulting from goaf falls. Windblasts were the cause of serious injuries and threatened the continued operation of the mine. A microseismic early warning system was installed and a significant success rate in providing early warning of large roof instability resulting in high velocity windblasts, has been achieved. Early warning of goafing is accepted as an operational tool on the mine. Severe demands are placed on the operator in terms of 'real time' interpretation. The development of an expert system allowed for a probabilistic approach to achieve automatic alarms. This paper will quantify the success, failure and false alarm rates achieved by manual operation and automatic expert system-based decisions making, respectively.

The permit generation and review process represents both a time consuming and expensive task for industry and government alike. Changes in regulations and in review procedures cause additional delays. This leads to potentially higher costs of doing business and the extension of time for a project to lie started. This paper describes the motivation and methodology of applying an expert system to function in the role of a permit reviewer. The problems of representing the knowledge of the reviewer and regulatory criteria are illustrated. Futhermore, the selection method for the expert system shell is addressed. Finally, a sample review is demonstrated to show the results of applying this artificial intelligence method to the process of permit review.

The exchange ion on the clays affects their dewaterability. Metal ions in solution and on the exchange sites of smectite clays are known to act as Lewis acids. Recent work has determined that these ions can be titrated with high-molecular-weight polymers. The relative acidity of the exchange ion and the basicity of the polymer determined by the new method give insight into the dewatering mechanism.

At the request of the Mine Safety and Health Administration, a quantitative assessment of the risk of lung cancer associated with occupational exposures to diesel exhaust was performed. This assessment was primarily based upon the results from a study of the effects of chronic inhalation exposure to diesel exhaust in Fischer-344 rats (previously reported by Mauderly et al., 1987). An adaptation of the Armitage-Doll multistage model, which allows for an age-dependent effect of exposure, was used to model the tumor response data. This model was fitted to all tumors (benign and malignant), and to malignant neoplasms alone. Estimates of unit risk (potency) were derived based upon a linear approximation to the results from the multistage model. A biologically equivalent dose was developed to scale the results from airborne exposure in rats to humans, which was adjusted for differences in weight, ventilation rate, deposition fraction, and the percentage of time actually exposed. Comparisons are made with risk estimates derived from modeling other rat inhalation bioassays and from applying different models to the study by Mauderly et al. (1987). We emphasize that our risk estimates are based upon a series of assumptions and carry a great deal of uncertainty. In particular, uncertainties regarding the effects of exposure on lung clearance mechanisms, the deposition rates in humans, and the relevance of our exposure index limit our confidence in these risk estimates. Because of these uncertainties, this risk assessment would best be viewed as an exploratory effort. Key words: Diesel, lung cancer, risk assessment

The US Bureau of Mines is using Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) analysis to investigate the bonding mechanisrn that occurs during the dewatering of clay slurries. High-molecular-weight polymers are used as flocculating agents in these processes. This investigation presents the results of an FT-!R study of calcium-exchanged montmorillonite treated with polyacrylamide (PAM) and polyethylene oxide (PEO). Both thin film and attenuated total reflectance (ATR) spectroscopic techniques were employed to study this clay polymer system. Results suggest PAM is adsorbed to the clay via the nitrogen atom of the polymer. A waterbridge is involved in the bonding between the clay at d PEO. Evidence also suggests that PEO may be adsorbed directly onto the surface of the clay.

European coal mines are facing a very difficult situation. Despite a steadily increasing world energy consumption, the sales of European coal mines have been going down and production has to be adapted. The reason is the collapse of energy prices aided by the decreasing rate of U.S. $ to Deutschmark in the last few years. The problems are not due to the development of European mines themselves. Assured energy supplies are an important condition for the health of a nation's economy. Contribution of domestic energy production ensures some degree of independence from world market fluctuations as to supply volumes and price, and maintaining jobs and should be achieved within the framework of economic constellations. Governmental energy programs are planned towards meeting this end.

"A beautiful America will require the effort of government at every level, of business, and of private groups. Above all it will require the concern and action of individual citizens, alert to danger, determined to improve the quality of their surroundings, resisting blight, demanding and building beauty for themselves and their children." "Improvement of our environment" has become a cause much like "motherhood". The increased awareness of the public concerning this subject makes it most unpopular for anyone to be involved in anything that seemingly is detrimental to our environment. And this awarement goes far beyond our biggest pollution problem in America - the distribution of paper, abandoned automobiles, beer cans and other garbage by our enlightened society along every city, highway, trout stream, river and mountain in America. In fact, the greatest awarement comes because of the "sensational" reporting and writing in our various national communication media, wherein the same voting citizens who so generously distribute their refuse about the countryside are emotionally aroused and duped into transferring what is truly a national problem onto the shoulders of a few industries - notably and particularly the mineral extraction industry. Certainly mankind is more and more stumbling over his own garbage daily, a fact that is easier to sell a citizen of one of our large cities than a resident of the wide open spaces of the west. Yet even in the Rocky Mountain states, the "Land of Sky Blue Waters", the "Big Sky Country", and particularly in Salt Lake valley smog is not unknown. Pollution and littering have become problems that need to be faced squarely. In North Dakota alone it has been estimated that one section of farm land each year flows down the mighty Missouri and the greatest producer of sediment is now reported to be the highway department.
