"Kennecott Utah Copper (KUC) Smelter scheduled a rebuild of their flash smelting furnace forSeptember, 2014. KUC’s goal in this project was to reduce the rebuild time from 65 to 55 days by using explosives to break the matte and brick layers of the uptake shaft and hearth sections of the furnace. Previous rebuilds had employed the slower technique of mechanical breakers to remove the matte and brick layers which took 22 days. KUC has many years of experience in removing slag from the uptake shaft, but they had never used explosives to remove the hearth. As far as KUC was aware, no other smelter operation had attempted a hearth removal in this way."

This contribution presents an introduction into that part of the field of elastic wave propagation which is relevant to blasting of boreholes and addresses briefly borehole breakdown and the formation of the fracture network around a borehole which ultimately leads to the disintegration of the rock mass. Phenomena of this kind are encountered in mining and quarrying. Numerical as well as experimental work referring to stress wave expansion from a detonating borehole is addressed.

The Hercudet™ non-electric delay blasting cap system has exhibited outstanding performance and economic results in surface work. The versatility inherent in the system, which allows the combining of the built-in cap delays with the tubing delay (i.e.: the travel time of the gas reaction through the tubing), has resulted in outstanding blast results. Examples of blast patterns used, details of the blast design process, and recently-developed methods of use of Hercudet for surface initiation of detonating cord downlines are given in the paper.

The deadline for meeting legal requirements relating to the sale of explosives in the European Union was 1 January 2003. The paper examines the range of materials that have already been certified by the different Explosives Notified Bodies as well as recent national and European Commission decisions relating to this work. The implications of enlargement of the European Union are also discussed as is the future role of the Great Britain Explosives Notified Body in certification and assessment.

KANSAS CITY, MO - Performing one of the most impressive urban building-implosion projects in recent memory, Tulsa, Oklahoma-based Dykon Explosive Demolition Corp. and Omaha, Nebraska-based Anderson Excavating recently felled the landmark Columbia Bank Building in downtown Kansas City, Missouri, USA. Although every structural blasting project presents special challenges, this undertaking was most notable for its unusually unique structural design, tight clearances, and high risk to adjacent structures.

On these occasions, the stresses, complications - and most notably the dangers - related to the industry increase exponentially, and conspire to test the mettle of even the most seasoned experts.

The Beirut Hilton Hotel, which was built in 1975, but never occupied, was imploded on Sunday, July 14, 2002 by Controlled Demolition, Inc. (CDI) of Phoenix, Maryland and their client, Optimal Engineering Consulting & Contracting, SARL, (OECC) of Antelias, Lebanon to make room for a new hotel. Twenty-seven years ago, just days before the grand opening, the Hilton Hotel became the site of fighting in Lebanon’s Civil War. Christian and Muslim militiamen fought room to room for control of the building and other nearby hotels. The Hilton, two other major hotels and other high-rise buildings were ravaged by the fighting. The building was one of the three major hotels badly damaged, but not rebuilt, in Lebanon. Located in the City Center, the Hilton stood out in a major redevelopment area which, in recent years, had erased the scars of the 15 year long Civil Wa r.

Dallas/Fort Worth Airport recently took a major step in its fiveyear expansion project with the explosive demolition of the Hyatt Regency Hotel West. Built in 1965, the Hyatt Regency held the distinction of hosting five U.S. Presidents over the years and was reportedly one of the first hotels in the world to be built within an airport’s boundaries.

As farms decrease and subdivisions increase there is a continuing demand for easy and safe silo removal. A few years ago I attended one of the Omni istribution explosive classes and was impressed by a product designed by Omni owner Bill Nixon called the Omni Breach. Its original purpose and main current use is law enforcement; specifically door breaching and tactical operations, with most of the force coming from water using a minimal amount of explosive component. I experimented with various charge strengths on concrete and found that it can be easily shattered with little flyrock or airblast. A neighbor of mine had an old silo within a foot of a barn that he was rebuilding and inquired about its removal. His property was sandwiched between an elementary school and Interstate 40, so I told him that I would do some test shots and if the results proved satisfactory, I would take the job for free to test the following theory.

The Iron Ore Company of Canada [IOC] is a global leader in Arctic mining applications, and the blasting crew have something to be very proud of. On Wednesday 21 Dec 2005 at 3:28 PM the largest single bench blast in the company history was detonated. The successful firing of this 5.0 million tonne [5.5 million ton] blast surpassed the previous company record of 3.8 million tonnes [4.18 million ton].

The recruitment and retention of future talent into the explosives industry is becoming increasingly important. Student chapters help with this effort but what are they doing and are there things they could learn from each other? This paper discusses the University of Kentucky Student Chapter's efforts to grow membership, retain its recruits, and integrate them into the explosives industry. Several social and professional events during which the students are able to meet and network with members of their future industry are introduced. The special relationship that has been fostered between the University of Kentucky and Missouri University of Science and Technology is discussed. Professional development initiatives which are critical for a student to become vested in the industry are shared in this paper. These opportunities which range from internships to research positions allow a person to get a better understanding of the explosives industry and find the niche that best suits them. Many of the student chapters are closely connected with engineering programs. While this makes sense and both entities benefit from these arrangements there is a trend of job placement primarily in the engineering industry. By providing these students with the chance to learn more about the explosives industry and get hands on experience more of these future engineers and professionals can be retained after their graduation.

Delay detonators that are damaged by cross-hole wave interactions degrade blasting work and raise the risk of incidents. Damaged detonators impose risk, because they can retain sensitive explosives that respond to stray energy during recovery, inspection or disposal. Laboratory techniques were developed to rank the ruggedness of delay detonators under replicated field-shooting conditions. The hazards are tremendously magnified if trial detonators are installed directly in secondary explosives to rank initiation strength. Therefore indirect ranking techniques were sought that mitigate the risks without compromising the worthiness of the method. Four types of hardware fixtures, referred to as simulators, were developed to yield distinct forms of transient compression. The shock and rift versions generate compression pulses representative of in situ waveform components. The waiting time, until the trial detonator functions, duplicates typical delay periods. The trial detonator is mounted within water, which has a density and inertial resistance comparable to most blasting explosives. The work output from the trial detonator explosion is registered as fixture wall-expansion. This work output determines malfunction results, regardless of which type of simulator is used.

Lowering of quarry energy consumption participates to answer both environmental and financial issues. The “EE-Quarry” European project, supported by the European Commission (EE stands for Energy Efficient), develops a new and highly effective modelling and monitoring Energy Management System technique to improve Energy Efficiency and move to a low CO2 emission rate in the nonmetallic mineral industry. Within this global quarry project, blast design, as the first link in the chain, has to be optimized in order to satisfy requirements of downstream operations. The authors have been developing and implementing an operational methodology using continuous field measurements and field adaptation methods for blast design. It drives the drilling and blasting work, aiming at a more energy efficient and environmentally friendly operation. Based upon actual local conditions (rock-mass assessment, face geometry, borehole deviations, etc.), blast patterns are optimized through a specific hole-by-hole blast design software. It provides a better and more consistent energy distribution, to achieve a better rock fragmentation, while avoiding explosive overconsumption. The software also calculates total energy inputs and the drilling and blasting contribution to Greenhouse Effect. Coupled with methodical fieldwork and variable density explosives, it has been leading to a real reduction in energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions. As the project is now reaching its final stage, demonstrations were conducted in various quarries around Europe. Several simulations were carried out and compared to the site data, in order to propose enhancements for the different phases (extraction, loading, hauling, crushing and transport) while bearing in mind the environmental impact of the quarry. This blasting methodology allows to assess the carbon footprint of drilling and blasting in conjunction with the downstream operations, thus to evaluate the global carbon footprint of quarrying. Production blasts at one of Copelmi’s coal mine operations will be carried out 100 m (330 ft) from a neighborhood located in the town of Butiá, southern Brazil. Mine management is concerned about the possibility of damages and complaints due to blasting operations at close distances to structures of substandard construction. Blasting in the area is characterized by the use of very low powder factor resulting in confined shots in which movement is restricted to a point of almost undershooting the rock. Over the past year, tests were conducted mainly in the overburden area to determine the best approach to be implemented when blasts move closer to the town. Mine management wants vibration levels to be reduced lower than the damage limits proposed by Brazilian regulations to ensure a safety margin and mitigate perception by the community hoping to reduce the number of complaints.

The use of air-decks to reduce explosive costs has become very topical in recent years. The majority of the research in this area has been arried out between the Soviet Union where reductions in explosive consumption of between 10-30% have been claimed with apparent benefits being gained in both fragmentation and movement. Work carried out by the University of Maryland using thick plexiglass blocks has supported these findings and indicated that air-decks in measetbe duration of action of the shock wave on the surrounding material by a factor of 2 to 5 (see Figure 1). Although the fracture network resulting from this mechanism is not as intense as that produced adjacent to the explosive charge it does appear to act over a larger volume of material. Although the mechanism attributed to air-decking has been studied in some detail the effect of this mechanism on the size distribution of material produced during a blast does not appear tot have attracted much attention.
