"The metalliferous deposits of Vancouver Island have generally been assigned to the Mesozoic ""Coast Range Orogeny."" However, a metallogenic study by the writer has revealed that several important classes are early or middle Tertiary. Included are porphyry coppers, and gold-quartz, arsenic and copper-arsenic veins.The porphyry coppers and many gold-quartz veins are within and adjacent to Oligocene-Eocene quartz diorite intrusive complexes. Arsenic and copper-arsenic veins have a close spatial relationship to sills and laccoliths of Oligocene dacite porphyry which intrude the late Cretaceous Nanaimo Group.Other deposits of demonstrable Tertiary age include a molybdenum stockwork related to a relatively potassic Eocene plug and a few small copper-skarn occurrences. Some copper stockworks and a mercury deposit are probably also Tertiary.The copper deposits of previously recognized Tertiary age are those of the Sooke area that occur in Eocene basalts and Oligocene gabbros."

Many factors about the HIC (hydrogen-induced cracking) resistance of pipelines are discussed in this paper. The main factors that influence the ability of HIC are environmental and material factors. The chemical compositions, non-metal inclusions and microstructure are discussed in detail, while a group of tests on HIC resistance are done according to varying C, S, Mn and P contents in pipeline steels, different experiment time and different strength to the coupon. It is concluded that decreasing the amount of C and S can obtain good HIC resistance; the test time has an effect on the different microstructure of X70; microstructure is the most sensitive factor for the initiation processes of HIC.

"The Clarabelle Mill rock tailings have the potential to generate sulphuric acid through chemical and biological oxidation of sulphide minerals. Current rock tailings assay between 0.80 -1.40 %S, with sulphur occurring principally as coarse pyrrhotite. Acid generation within the tailings area can be substantially reduced by segregating pyrrhotite rich tailings in a submerged storage area and by depositing only low sulphur rock tailings in exposed areas. Laboratory tests confirmed that low sulphur tailings could be produced by flotation at reduced pH with a small xanthate addition. A plant test was conducted to evaluate the production of low sulphur tailings in conjunction with INCO's continuing commitment to environmental protection and progressive decommissioning of the metallurgical site.During the plant evaluation, approximately 5% of the mill rock tailings were reprocessed in a line of 100 tt3 Denver flotation cells. Tailing grades below 0.40% S were easily achieved through operation at pH 6 -7, with xanthate addition (dosages up to 0.02 lb/ton) and 10 -15 minutes of nominal retention time. Froth depths between 1 -3 inches combined with relatively liberal amounts of frother were required to pull the lightly mineralized froth into the concentrate which averaged 11% sulphur and less than 5% mass recovery. In addition, three field lysimeters were each filled with two hundred.ton bulk samples of low sulphur tails (0.35% S), standard rock tailings (0.98% S), and mill total tailings (2.30% S) for long term monitoring. The implications for full scale plant design, tailings area decommissioning, the possibility of increased nickel recovery and preliminary field lysimeter data are discussed."

In situ leaching of copper has the potential to deliver low-cost recovery for soluble copper deposits of sufficient permeability. In order to provide key inputs for modeling of the in situ leaching process, bench scale test work can be used in conjunction with geochemical software to identify key leaching and precipitation reactions. A case study is presented in which a series of flow-through acid leaching tests were conducted on drill core sections from a porphyry copper deposit without crushing or grinding. Concentrations of copper and other key elements were monitored in the recirculating leach solution over several months. A geochemical model of each leaching test was prepared using Geochemist's Workbench using a combination of diffusion-controlled and reaction-controlled rate mechanisms. Key reactions included leaching of chrysocolla, iron oxides, and plagioclase. The model was able to simultaneously satisfy the evolving chemistry of the recirculating leach solution, mineralogy of the head and leach residue, measured acid consumption, and leaching rates for key minerals reported from previous laboratory studies. Opportunities and limitations for scaling up the model to simulate the commercial wellfield are discussed.

"The removal of iron asgoethite from the high iron bearing solutions generated in zinc hydrometallurgy using a strong airflow device was investigated. The influence of oxygen flow, copper ion concentration, temperature and reaction time on iron precipitation as goethite was studied. The optimum conditions were: oxygen flow 0.2-0.35m3/h, copper ion concentration 0.25-0.5g/L, temperature 80-90oC, zinc oxide powder neutralizing agent and a reaction time of5to 7hours. Under the optimal conditions, the Fe2+concentration was reduced to 0.025g/L after iron precipitation, and the goethite residue contained 38.7wt.%Fe. The SEM and XRD analyses showed that the iron was present as well formed FeOOH crystals in the iron residue, and the amount of iron sulphate was very low. Production practice shows that, when the average iron concentration in the feed solution was 11.61g/L and 4.08g/L after precipitation, the weight of iron removed was 1,439kg/day. When the average iron concentration in the feed solution was 14.51g/L and 2.73g/L after precipitation, the weight of iron removed was 2,454kg/day. This represents a ~70 percent increase in iron removal.INTRODUCTIONThe objective of iron removal is to produce a small volume of iron residue, and our industrial goethite process meets this requirement. The high Fe(II) solution in our reactor isoxidized/hydrolyzed to precipitate goethite and the precipitate is sent to a pyro metallurgical furnace for final residue treatment. Some literature discusses (DengYong-guiet al., 2008;Meiguang-guiet al., 2001;Zhongzhu-qianet al., 1980) research on iron hydrolysis; one of the reported rate limiting parameters was the low availability of the oxidant when using air and another was the inhomogeneous air distribution. There are two iron hydrolysis-goethite precipitation methods; the Electrolytic Zinc process (EZ) and the Vieille Montagne process (VM) (Lei Xiang, 2006; Xuguo-qiang, 2007;ZhaoYonget al.,2005). The EZ method hydrolyzes the Fe3+directly to FeOOH. The weakness of the EZ process is the low recovery rate of the associated minor metals. The VM method reduces the iron to the ferrous state and then oxidizes the Fe(II)to Fe(III),with simultaneous hydrolysis/precipitation of the Fe(III) as FeOOH. Before iron hydrolysis, the minor metals, such as indium, could be selectively precipitated, because Fe(II)requires a high pH for hydrolysis. The Sepon process plant utilises an autoclave to oxidize a flotation concentrate containing pyrite, residual copper minerals, and sulphur. The concentrate is produced from the residue of a preceding atmospheric copper leaching circuit. The function of the autoclave is to provide iron and acid for that atmospheric copper leaching circuit. The key issues in the operation of the autoclave are to maximise the production of acid and ferric ions and to avoid scaling issues related to sulphur balling in the autoclave. Scale control in the autoclave was examined using various dispersants and residue recycle without success. Operation of the autoclave at high temperature and high acidity addressed the scale issue through rapid oxidation of the sulphur and produced a ferric sulphate precipitate in the residue that could be re-leached to provide ferric iron. This paper presents the development steps followed, through batch and continuous piloting that resulted in an autoclave circuit design that addressed the above process requirements. Following definition of the process design basis, modelling of the autoclave operation was carried out to assist with engineering design. The model included thermodynamics and kinetics of oxidation of pyrite, elemental sulphur and covellite and also considered gas/liquid mixing, oxygen solubility as a function of temperature and solution composition, ferrous to ferric oxidation, gangue reactions with acid and precipitation/re-dissolution of basic ferric sulphate and alunite.

Recently, a new approach to controlling alumina feeding in a H.H. cell has been proposed [1, 2 and 3]. This approach, labeled In Situ aluminium cell control, is based on a correlation between the slope of the cell voltage during a no feed observation period and the dissolved alumina concentration in the bath. Once the dissolved alumina concentration has been estimated, a primary calibration surface uniquely relating the dissolved alumina concentration and the anode-cathode-distance (ACD) to the cell voltage is used to estimate the cell ACD. Once both the alumina concentration and the ACD have been estimated at the end of the observation period, a PID controller can be used to regulate the rate of alumina feeding using only the normalized cell voltage to calculate the error between the estimated dissolved alumina concentration and a target value. The In Situ aluminium cell control algorithm has now been tested with the Dyna/Marc [4, 5 and 6] cell simulator demonstrating that it should be possible to control a H.H. cell in this manner with less variation in the dissolved alumina concentration and other process variables producing a prediction of improved cell current efficiency and power efficiency.

"A review of historic operating practices of the heap leach pads at the Los Filos Mine, Mexico, revealed periods of restricted cyanide addition, reduced leach time, and insufficient irrigation flow. These issues all led to the buildup of partially leached recoverable gold inventory within the leach pads. Drawing down this inventory represented an opportunity to bring value forward. This paper outlines the strategic initiatives which were implemented as efforts to accelerate the inventory drawdown, including geophysical mapping and pressure injection.INTRODUCTION Los Filos is a heap-leach operation located in the Guerrero gold belt in southern Mexico. Operational and hydraulic challenges at the Los Filos Mine have led to a buildup of gold in inventory within the leach pads. Operationally, periods of restricted reagent addition, reduced leach time, and insufficient irrigation flow have compounded over the last eight years, and resulted in significant inventory growth. Hydraulically, the leach pad has issues with low permeability and solution channeling due to the fines and clay content of the ore. The leach pad is storing high-grade pregnant leach solution (PLS) as perched aquifers above areas that are compacted and difficult to drain. These operational and hydraulic challenges made it particularly difficult to spatially predict the precise locations of the inventory build-up. Fortunately, the challenges at Los Filos are not unique to the mine, and others have taken steps elsewhere to reduce metal inventory through a program that targets areas for inventory drawdown. For example, Ghorbani et al. (2016) noted that a method of injecting barren reagent solutions, applied directly to specific areas of a leach pad to reduce inventory, was presented by Wan and Brierley (1997) and Wan (1997). Seal (2004; 2007), Seal and Jung (2005), and Seal et al. (2012) have put the injection methodology into practice in Nevada and Colorado gold mines with a technology called Hydro-Jex®. The goal of Hydro-Jex has been to supply reagents at a high pressure over a short duration, followed by periodical low pressure rinse periods to remove leached metal and resupply fresh reagent to the ore."

"Recent years have seen a resurgence of interest in flotation cell design, and one of the areas where attention is being focused is flotation in centrifugal fields which aims at increasing the flotation rates by forced bubble-particle contact.A new cycloflotation device was developed at Laurentian University and tested on the nickel ore of Falconbridge Limited in Sudbury. In comparison with conventional flotation, cycloflotation yielded at least seven times faster flotation rates in terms of the mass of solids floated per unit time per unit flotation volume, while producing concentrate grades similar to those of conventional flotation. These results, which were obtained with a bench-scale ""cyclofloat cell,"" suggest that cycloflotation has the potential of setting a new direction in flotation technology.IntroductionFroth flotation is no doubt the dominant separation technique in the mineral processing industry. Since its inception early in this century, much research effort has been and is still being expended on this process. Until recent years, emphasis seems to have been placed on the chemical aspects of flotation, but there is now an increased awareness for the need to improve flotation machine performance and more and more attention is being directed towards this area. "The fire resistance of several mine conveyor belts is evaluated using a new belt-flammability apparatus developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The test apparatus, experimental details and a calculated flammability index (FI) are described.The FI values are useful for ranking the fir e resistance of mine conveyor belts. Values are determined using parameters readily measured with thermocouples, high-temperature flow probes and a methane-oxygen torch, all of which are components of the Bureau's new test apparatus. The FI varies directly with the flame-spread rate and the rate of heat release during burning and varies inversely with the critical (minimum) ignitor energy output.The fire-resistance ranking of nine different belt types using this moderately scaled apparatus is compared with available full-scale data on belt fires. This comparison shows that the ranking based on the FI is consistent with the full-scale data.IntroductionFull-scale fire hazard evaluations of mine conveyor belts are not easily related to the properties usually measured in small-scale flammability tests. The inadequacy of small-scale belt fire tests has been demonstrated in works by Mitchell, Warner and Reinke.Mitchell and Warner showed that certain neoprene (NP) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) belts, which had been approved by the Code of Federal Regulations 30 CFR 18.65, were nevertheless capable of propagating flame over their entire length when full-scale fire conditions were simulated. Comparable results were also observed by Reinke at the Tremonia experimental mine in Dortmund, West Germany, where all belts burned in full-scale tests even though they passed the small-scale tests. Only by reducing the severity of the full-scale test could these fire-resistant belts be grouped on a pass-fail basis."

The flocculant-assisted hydrocyclone involves the addition of a flocculant to the cyclone feed for the purpose of obtaining a clear cyclone overflow, and thereby eliminating or reducing thickener requirements in tailings disposal operations. This paper describes the testing of this concept on the iron ore tailings of Quebec Cartier Mining Company's Mount Wright Concentrator. The current practice at Mount Wright makes use of conventional hydrocyclones and thickeners for the disposal of their tailings, which are generated in a spiral gravity separation circuit. The test work was conducted primarily on their cyclone overflow product which becomes the feed to the thickeners. A detailed study was carried out to determine the sedimentation properties of these tailings in terms of their response to a variety of flocculating reagents, and to varying conditions of pH, pulp density and flocculant dosage. The tailings were then processed in a laboratory hydrocyclone with the aid of flocculants. The use of a shear resistant flocculant, in particular, was found to yield cyclone overflows with low solids contents. Based on the test results obtained, a conceptual flow sheet has been proposed for the treatment of the iron ore tailings at the Mount Wright Concentrator.

"Conventionally, direct reduced iron (DRI) mixed with char from rotary furnace discharge is cooled down before separating the char via magnetic separator. The DRI must then be reheated for further downstream processing (i.e. smelting). Outotec has developed the PyroMagTM specifically to conserve thermal energy during this separation process. DRI is cleaned by feeding hot particles directly after reduction onto a rotating surface just above a stationary magnet assembly. This allows hot feeding of the clean DRI to the downstream equipment which renders the entire process more energy efficient.Continuous testing of the PyroMagTM was performed to verify design and separation. Because the use of DRI/char was not practical for test use, the pilot plant testing was conducted using a magnetite/sand mixture heated up to and beyond the Curie temperature of magnetite. The separation was efficient for both cold and hot processing with recoveries varying from 98.6% to 99.74%. As expected, the recoveries decreased to as low as 83.99% as the temperature was increased beyond the curie temperature of magnetite (585°C). Long term separation was thermally efficient and sustainable.INTRODUCTIONMagnetic drum separators are widely used in the mineral processing industry. These low to high intensity magnetic separators are used to concentrate various magnetic material, such as iron ore, and less magnetic materials, such as ilmenite and garnet from silica and other contaminantsThere are multiple classes of magnetism based on the effect that each material displays while in and out of a magnetic field. In a simplified fashion, which is more appropriate for mineral processing, the magnetic susceptibility of a mineral is used to define it as being ferromagnetic, paramagnetic or nonmagnetic. In this respect, minerals with varying degree of magnetic susceptibility can be selectively separated with different types of magnetic separation equipment in different stages of a process flow sheet. The lower strength magnets are employed early in the process to remove highly magnetic fractions. Later stages utilize greater magnetic fields for capture of less magnetically susceptible material."

"In 1957, the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys (now Energy, Mines and Resources Canada) issued their first certificate for a fire-resistant conveyor belt. The testing procedure used was a combination of those used in the U.S.A. and the U.K. Subsequently, certification was granted to fire resistant electric cables (1974), fire-resistant mine duct material (1976) and fire-resistant hydraulic fluids (1978).Until recently, the testing procedures were copied from either the U.S. or the U.K. However, since the founding of the new Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Steering Committee for Electrical/Mechanical Mine Safety in 1981, these requirements have come under the close scrutiny of new CSA technical committees who will attempt to adopt or change the existing procedures to meet Canadian needs. This paper outlines the existing test requirements and attempts to predict how they will appear after ""Canadianization"" by the CSA committees.IntroductionFires in underground mines have always been considered more serious than in other locations because of the confined space and limited atmosphere. A fire can make escape difficult or impossible if it is blocking all of the routes to the surface. Also, the products of combustion from an underground fire can asphyxiate anyone not having self-contained breathing apparatus.In an underground coal mine, the consequences of a fire can be even more serious because of the presence of methane and coal dust in the atmosphere (which can explode) and because the coal itself is combustible.For these reasons, the inspection authorities having jurisdiction over underground mine s in Canada are quite concerned about the flammability of any materials that are used in quantity in the underground environmentAs early as 1957, the Canadian Explosive Atmospheres Laboratory (CEAL) was asked to certify conveyor belting as fire-resistant. This is because many miles of this material are used in underground mines in Canada and, as it generally travels through the mine, it is a perfect vehicle for spreading a fire."

Semi-finished copper and copper-alloy products are typically produced by casting, subsequent hot rolling or extruding and further cold working by rolling and drawing. The technological properties of the products depend not only on the chemical composition of the alloys but also on process parameters such as annealing conditions and degree of deformation. In each production step, measuring and control technology is an important tool for optimizing processes and ensuring constant high quality. This paper follows the product all the way from testing incoming scrap packages, chemical analysis of melts, mould level control in casting, non-destructive testing technologies in cold forming processes, controlling geometrical properties in the production process, to the final tests of technological properties. All test methods are focused on the applications and requirements of our customers, as the examples show.

Oxalic precipitation is usually applied to process radioactive wastes or to recover actinides from a multicomponent solution. Precipitation reactions being highly sensitive to many operation parameters, the computer simulation appears to be a very effective tool to forecast the evolutions of the system subjected to various operating conditions. This study focuses on the tetravalent uranium oxalate precipitation modelling which combines population balance and hydrodynamics. Both experimental and numerical studies are carried out in order to analyse the reactor design influence on the precipitate characteristics. The simulations taking into account primary nucleation and crystal growth are in agreement with experiments.
