Very few of those occupied in pursuits other than mining have any conception of the extent of boring operations that have been carried out on the gold and coal fields of Victoria, or of the valuable and definite knowledge obtainable by such means. The subject comprises various branches, which it will be necessary to describe in detail. The three main divisions are The Administrative, which includes all financial work and general management. The Professional, dealing with topographical and geological work necessary before any scheme of boring can be laid out, the preparation of plans, the inspection of cores obtained from bore holes, the examination of diamonds, etc. The Mechanical Branch, dealing with the drilling machinery, setting of diamonds, maintenance of stores, etc. In 1877, the Goverpment of Victoria decided to assist in prospecting the mineral resources of the colony by the aid of diamond drill boring, and for that purpose, a vote of £5,000 was passed, with which were purchased three diamond dulls, an American type being adopted.

The Nam San copper-gold deposit was discovered in 2011 and is a likely blind extension of the Permian age Phu Kham structurally deformed porphyry/skarn copper-gold deposit.The Nam San mineralisation is hosted within a dominantly sericite altered schist unit located to the north of the current Phu Kham open pit operation and is overthrust by an allochthonous barren cover sequence of limestone, granite and sandstone. Reinterpretation of the Phu Kham geology developed the concept of a possible telescoped porphyry copper-gold system at depth. Initial drilling intersected remobilised copper mineralisation in a basal conglomerate, confirming the concept. A reconnaissance vector array induced polarisation (IP) survey identified a deep chargeability anomaly from which a drilling target was developed from 3D inversion modelling of a detailed follow up dipole-pole-dipole anomaly. Drilling of the chargeability anomaly intersected the blind Nam San copper-gold mineralisation beneath the thrusted cover sequence.The key discovery parameters are the result of an integrated exploration program that included reinterpretation of the local stratigraphy, which developed the concept of a deep blind orebody, IP surveys capable of penetrating through the barren cover and a commitment to a deep directional drilling program to test these concepts and targets. "From 2010, the dolomite concentration in the ore fed to the Usoke Plant increased, resulting in a significant increase in the gangue acid consumption and Mg build-up in the circuit, and thus an increase in the Mg:Co ratio in the plant solutions. This affected the Co salt grade, reagent consumption, filtration and drying capacity. Efforts were put in place to minimise the acid consumption and consequently the Mg dissolution (such as use of pre-diluted acid), but the benefits were negligible. Various efforts were then initiated by CHEMAF to improve the cobalt plant productivity (quantity and quality) by process changes, dual precipitation and seed recycle. The positive results obtained in the laboratory were successfully implemented on plant scale. A change in the process from a single-stage precipitation with Na2CO3 to dual precipitation using a combination of Na2CO3 and NaOH improved the capacity of the Co salt filtration by 30%, the Co salt grade and drying capacity by 50%, and reduced the reagent consumption by 22%. Implementation of precipitate seed recycle increased Mg rejection by 40%, improving the Co salt grade from 20% to 25%, and yielding a further drop in reagent consumption. INTRODUCTION CHEMAF (Chemicals of Africa), a mining company located in Katanga province of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has been operating since 2003. The Usoke hydrometallurgical plant treats the Cu-Co ore from the Etoile pit to produce Cu cathodes via a leach–solvent-extraction (SX)–electrowinning (EW) circuit and Co salt via a selective precipitation process. The plant was designed to treat run-of-mine (ROM) ore grading 6% Cu and 1.5% Co; but, in 2008, due to a decline in grades, a heavy-media separation (HMS) plant was commissioned to enrich the low-grade ROM (3.5% Cu and 0.5% Co) up to 8% Cu and 1% Co before feeding it to the hydrometallurgical plant. Co is recovered by precipitation of Fe and Al with limestone, followed by Co precipitation as Co carbonate using sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), also known as soda ash. 85% of the final effluent from cobalt precipitation is recycled back to the plant as process water; the balance, 15%, is bled out and compensated for by fresh water top up to control and retard the rate of sodium sulfate build up."

Since the first longwall panel development started in the new mining, (Southern) area, a number of roof falls have occurred in L1 and L2 gate-entries. The longwall was delayed for a total of two months due to roof falls in the gate-entries. To prevent roof falls in future gate-entries, an extensive ground control analysis has been conducted which incorporated regional horizontal stress and panel orientation, tectonic stress, roof strata, surface stream valleys, etc. Results of the analysis indicate that a combination of these factors caused the roof falls. Therefore, a Roof Instability Rating (RIR) system was constructed to predict the roof condition and identify areas where supplemental support should be implemented. The L3 gate-entries, supported by the prediction using the RIR system, have not experienced any roof problems.

When a rock particle is subjected to an external force, internal stresses and deformations are experienced by the particle. Assuming that the breakage of a rock is mainly due to tensile stresses generated by the action of a pair of concentrated loads, F, directed in compression towards the loading points at the shortest distance, as illustrated in Fig. 1, the stress and deformation experienced by a particle of irregular shape can be determined with the aid of the theory of elasticity. According to the photoelastic experiments made by one of the present authors,' the stress states in a rock particle of irregular shape are quite similar to that of an inscribed sphere of diameter x, as indicated in Fig. 1, but accompanied by the faint stresses, in the vicinity of the particle outside of the inscribed sphere. Therefore, the stress components in an irregularly shaped particle can be estimated by referring to stress components in a sphere. Applying polar spherical coordinates to an elastic spherical body, as shown in Fig. 1, the stress components are all expressed as multiples of F /x2 and more or less influenced by the loading angle and Poisson's number m. The metal zinc has been around since only about 1400 AD. This may sound like a long time, but when compared to fellow base metals copper and lead, which were discovered in 5000 and 4000 BC respectively, it is evident that zinc is a fairly new kid on the block. This may also be the reason why many new facts and benefits of zinc are still being discovered. For instance, it has been discovered only in the last few decades that virtually no life on earth is possible without zinc. In this address it will be shown that zinc is not only very useful to mankind, but is in fact vitally important for all forms of life. It will be shown that zinc is natural, zinc is essential for life, zinc protects, zinc contributes to the well-being of society and that zinc is fully recyclable. It is therefore hoped, that by the end of this address, zinc will no longer be viewed only as the metal that is responsible for the nice colour of roofing sheets and steel buckets, but may indeed be man?s best friend.

Two types of low-sulphidation epithermal mineralisation may be recognised in volcanic terranes. Chalcedonic Silica- Adularia-Illite type mineralisation is most common in rhyolitic terranes, whereas Crystalline Quartz-Illite-(Adularia- Kaolinite) type mineralisation is more typically formed in andesitic terranes. A third type of epithermal mineralisation, the high sulphidation or Vuggy Silica-Alunite- Kaolinite-Illite type, is also common in andesitic terranes. Episodic violent boiling, accompanying hydraulic fracturing and hydrothermal eruptions, characteristic of geothermal systems in rhyolitic terranes, is stressed for the formation of Chalcedonic Silica mineralisation. Such boiling of deeply circulating meteoric groundwater, with some magmatic fluid contribution, provides chalcedonic veining, episodic banding and brecciation textures, adularia stability, bladed calcite, and extreme loss of H2S from the fluid to cause major gold deposition. Crystalline Quartz mineralisation is probably caused by the mixing of shallow acidic groundwater with ascending deep geothermal fluids beneath andesitic strato- volcanoes. The cooling effect, oxidation, and increased acidity, overcomes the dilution effect, and results in quartz deposition, illite (and locally kaolinite) alteration, and precipitation of metals. Extensive formation of base-metal sulphides further enhances gold deposition. Violent boiling is restricted to local structural dilation sites, potentially producing high grade "bonanza" gold mineralisation.

The use of continuous flight auger piles has increased significantly in the U.K. to such an extent that it is now the most widely used method of constructing small diameter bored piles. This paper describes the improvements in equipment, techniques and particularly monitoring that have led to this growth. A review of the equipment in use describes how purpose built self erecting machines have been generally adopted. Improvements in ancilliary equipment are described. Concrete has almost completely replaced grout and techniques have been developed to extend the length of reinforcement that can be placed. Leading specialist contractors have developed instrumentation to monitor the construction of the pile (in terms of time, depth, torque, concrete pressure and flow) and keep a record for checking. A further significant development of this monitoring by means of sensors at various levels in the auger stem is described. The results obtained from this monitoring are reviewed and future developments discussed.

In the commercial annealing of cartridge brass there are four points regarding which definite data are essential. They have to do with the correct interpretation of grain count in its relation to annealing temperature and, incidentally, to Brinell hardness. These points are: 1. The comparison of the grain sizes of two cartridge-brass mixtures: 69 copper, 31 zinc, 0.376-in. (9.5-mm.) gage; and 68 copper, 32 zinc, 0.130-in. (3.3-mm.) gage 2. The comparison of the grain sizes of annealed metal that had previously been reduced by rolling varying amounts; for instance, 20.0, 36.6, 50.9, and 59.1 per cent. 3. The determination of standards for grain sizes on annealed brass of the composition 68 per cent. copper, 32 per cent. zinc and 69 copper, 31 zinc. 4. The comparison of grain size with Brinell hardness on identical samples of annealed metal. In their comprehensive and thorough investigation of the recrystal-lization of cold-worked alpha brass on annealing,l Mathewson and Phillips have discussed the relations between temperature of anneal, degree of deformation, and structural alteration in alpha brass. They have also shown certain comparisons between the ordinary physical properties and the grain size of annealed brass. The purpose of the present investigation is mainly concerned with the grain size of cartridge brass, its relation to Brinell hardness, and the publication of sufficient data to enable those engaged in the inspection of such material to have a correct foundation upon which to work. The first alloy was taken from regular mill stock that had been rolled from 0.580 in. to 0.376 in. (14.7 mm. to 9.5 mm.) gage, a reduction of 35.1 per cent. This bar (No. 1) had the following composition: Copper, 69.20 per cent.; zinc, 30.76 per cent.; lead, 0.02 per cent.; iron, 0.02 per cent. The second alloy was also taken from mill stock of 0.325 in. The present paper provides a brief overview of the thermodynamics of titania rich slags, an outline of the Multi-Phase Equilibrium (MPE) package and its application to ilmenite smelting. Through assessment of published experimental data on various systems containing TiOx, it was found that despite considerable scatter in measured phase equilibria data for the binary Ti2O3-TiO2system,the behaviour of binary and higher order titania rich slags and oxide solid solutions phases could be represented by solution models in the MPE package. Results from the applications of the MPE model on the stability of solid phases and slag-refractory interactions will be presented and discussed. Parallels will be drawn between the predictions by the model and observations made during pilot plant tests. In pursuance of the investigation into the influence of various elements on the properties of lead during the past year, the effect of several elements on the creep rate of commercially pure lead has been investigated; a standard initial stress of 500 lb. per sq. in. having been adopted for comparison purposes. Other work which has been carried out indicates that the relative results of creep tests may be altered by varying the applied stress, but this aspect of the problem will need to await further investigations for itscomplete elucidation. The results obtained with dilute tellurium alloys are considered sufficiently interesting, and in some respects are so extraordinary, as to warrant publicatiorr at this stage.n must be realised however that, since the results obtained appear to be at variance with those said to have been obtained in practice and those previously published, the present investigation can only be considered as a contribution to our knowledge of the general problem.Consequently it is not considered advisable or necessary to offer detailed explanation of the results given. In fact, some features of the tests about to be described will need further investigation before an adequate explanation is possible.

This paper describes a research project that focuses on developing a diagnostic routine to assist in decision support for the condition based maintenance of mobile mining equipment subject to unsteady duty. The objective is to develop a general method for initial identification of mechanical faults in machinery operating under non-steady state conditions. The platform to be used for the experimental development and validation of the system is the swing machinery in an electric mining shovel operating in an open pit mining environment. The strategic approach that is proposed for the diagnostic routine will involve using novelty detection augmented by temporal classification.

Crocidolite deposits in the Hamersley Ranges, NW. of Western Australia, occur over a length of 180 miles and a width of 20' to 30 miles. Their stratigraphic environment and mineralogy is comparable to that of similar deposits of the Cape Belt, South Africa. It is probable that the known exposures' represent only a small portion of the total extent.Current production is wholly by Australian Blue Asbestos Pty. Ltd. at Wittenoom Gorge and has been in the order of 1,2,000 to 14,000 long t.p.a over the past six years.INTRODUCTIONThe Hamersley Ranges are located in the NW. Division of Western Australia and extend, approximately, from latitudes 21° 30' to 23°S and longitudes 117° to 1200 E. Their mean height above sea level is 2,000 ft, and they rise from 600 to 800 ft above the general level of the tableland which extends SE. from the coastal town of Roebourne.Mt. Bruce, the highest peak, is 4,024 ft above sea level. The ranges are intersected by numerous north-flowing streams, which are dry during the greater part of the year. These streams have carved deep gorges, and it is in these that the principal deposits of crocidolite outcrop.The presence of the mineral was first recorded in 1917, but the deposits remained untouched until 1937 when strong market demand for crocidolite resulted in considerable prospecting and mining activity, particularly in Yampire, Wittenoom and Dale's Gorges. It was established also that the blue asbestos belt extended from Willi Wolli Springs NW. to Millstream station, Le., over a length of 180 miles and a width of 20 to 30 miles. The experimental results of study of atmospheric corrosion processes on Saint-Petersburg bronze monuments surface, received in situ and by means of simulating experiments, have been discussed. Influence of the time factor on corrosion film (patina) mineral composition has been analyzed. Direct dependence between patina mineral composition and environmental conditions has been proved. The sequence of patina phases crystallization has been established. Effect of the chemical composition and heterogeneity of artistic bronze and also monument surface structure on the rate of corrosion process has been regarded. The time variations of mass of the crystallized in the hydrochloric acid vapor phases have been investigated. The kinetic laws of their development at the initial stage of formation, indicating simple (non chain) reactions, have been revealed.

"Gold is present in different forms and associations in different ores. Flotation is used to recover gold and minerals associated with gold, but the applicability and type of flotation vary. The purpose of flotation in a gold recovery plant is largely dependent on the mineralogical association of the gold, and environmental and economic considerations. In this paper, the role of flotation in the recovery of gold is reviewed. The paper will describe examples of gold recovery by flotation including flotation of native gold, gold associated with sulphides including specifically copper sulphides, gold associated with tellurides, gold ores containing carbonaceous material and gold contained in tailings.INTRODUCTIONFlotation is widely used in the recovery of gold. However, the objectives and the mode of application are quite variable dependent on the type of ore, the gold association(s), other metal values, marketing considerations and environmental requirements. In this paper, a range of different applications of flotation incorporated in the recovery of gold are discussed. The reasons for each particular application are outlined and metallurgical results are presented.The mineralogy of the ore and the gold associations are fundamental influences on gold recovery. The use of flotation to concentrate gold is dictated by the mineralogy of the ore and gold. The fundamental factors are mineral/gold size, liberation size, association of the gold and type of gangue minerals or other valuable minerals. Gold can exhibit a range of sizes in a host from relatively large size (+50 µ) to refractory size (1 µ and sub-micron size). Similarly, the gold can occur in a number of phases in the same host. For example, the gold was present as petzite (AgAu telluride), calaverite (AuTe2) and native gold in a gold telluride ore and each of these minerals was associated with the pyrite host.Understanding the gold mineralogy and association is important in establishing the correct process route. The gold mineralogy is established by good mineralogy, use of diagnostic tools such as diagnostic leaching and assay by size fraction analyses and basic metallurgical testwork."

The ore treatment expansion programme at Mount Isa Mines required the erection of a new lead-zinc concentrator to be known as No. 2 Concentrator. This concentrator was designed by Western-Knapp Engineering Company in conjunction with staff of Mount Isa Mines Limited. Metallurgical design followed conventional wet milling practice, but the size of many plant units is larger than previously used at Mount Isa. The. total capacity of the new plant is 150,000 tons per four weekly period, and the plant is designed to operate in two equal parallel sections.Erection was contracted on a turnkey basis, and the plant was commissioned as a production unit on 23rd June 1966.The existing concentrator, No. I, was converted to treat all copper ore, and the total capacity of the two plants is now 390,000 tons per four weekly period.

The use of phosphate depressants in the cationic flotation of silica from francolite in the Florida phosphate industry is rarely practiced. The occasional use of gelatinized starch derivatives and pH adjustments to assure a slightly alkaline flotation feed slurry pH have been used in some processing plants to improve selectivity. This paper presents a preliminary laboratory comparison of several potential phosphate depressants for use with the flotation of siliceous phosphates. It was found that starch is ideal for floating fine (-35 mesh) silica from phosphate, while sodium tripolyphosphate may be the best for coarser (+35 mesh) feeds.
