"Soil reinforcement using stone columns is one of the well-developed ground improvement techniques for soft clay deposits. The load carrying capacity can be further improved by encasing it with geosynthetic material around the column which offers effective lateral confinement, prevents column contamination with improved drainage and strength characteristics. Improvement of undrained shear strength using vacuum consolidation is a type of hydraulic modification technique in which negative pore pressure will be developed which increases the effective stresses in soil without changing the total stress. The improvement in effective stress resulted in improved undrained shear strength of surrounding soil. In this research work, combined geosynthetic encased stone column and vacuum treatment method is examined for improving of extremely soft clay soils. The improvement in the time rate of consolidation and load carrying capacity of stone columns after vacuum treatment was studied using experimental investigations. It was observed that both load carrying capacity and stiffness of the encased stone column increased significantly with vacuum application. Also, application of vacuum accelerates rate of primary consolidation settlements. With this reduction in time, the construction activity can be accelerated which makes the project economically beneficial.INTRODUCTIONThe rising demand for the land for country’s infra-structure compels the engineers to work with even soft clay deposits which are not suitable for construction activities. As these soils have low bearing capacity and excessive settlement characteristics, ground improvement methods will be required before commencing construction. Among all available treatment methods, soil reinforcement and hydraulic modification technique are well-known popular techniques for its reduction in time required for consolidation settlement with improvement in load carrying capacity. When stone columns are used as a reinforcing member, it creates drainage with improves bearing capacity (Greenwood, 1970; Mitchell & Huber, 1983). However, the limitation includes lack of lateral confinement in very soft clay deposits, possibility of contamination, reduction in drainage path all which leads to the failure of stone columns (Mckenna et al, 1975). To overcome these limitations, encasement using geosynthetic material was adopted around the column which offers better lateral confinement, prevents intrusion of finer clay particle inside the column and provides effective drainage path with improved load bearing capacity characteristics (Van Impe, 1986; Raithel et al. 2005; Short et al. 2005; Borkemper et al. 2006; Murugesan & Rajagopal 2010; Kumar et al. 2014)"

The mineralogy, textures, and genetic significance of a silver-rich siderite vein and an apparently co-genetic galena vein from the South mine, Broken Hill are discussed.Both veins cut sharply across the Main Lode Horizon and appear to be coeval with thc A.B.H. Consols lode.The minerals of thc siderite vein apparently result from the preferential leaching of silver from Main Lode Horizon ore with a demonstrable "breakdown series" commencing with tetrahedrite, passing through silver sulpho-salts, and ending with simple binary compounds or with elemental silver.The siderite vein has been deposited by metahydrothermal fluids along the lines of Schneiderhohn's "secondary hydrothermal" mineralization.

The case study has identified and characterised additional subsidence arising from longwall mining above or under existing longwall goaf. It suggests that the magnitude, mechanisms and prediction methods for such additional subsidence are different between the two mining configurations. This paper presents a proposed method to predict maximum vertical subsidence due to longwall mining under existing longwall goaf. It suggests that, unless different results from further new cases become available, the findings presented in this article, including the aforementioned prediction method, be applicable to the majority of sites in New South Wales, where multi-seam longwall mining is to take place. This article also presents an important concept of 'overburden modification' due to multi-seam mining. A causal relationship between the above-mentioned additional subsidence and 'overburden modification' has been identified as a result of the case studies. Further investigations into the physical processes that cause such overburden modification will be fundamental to the understanding and management of multi-seam subsidence.

The Pipeline gold ore body was discovered in Lander County, NV in March 1991. Construction of the new mine and mill did not start until early March 1996. The $289-million project was placed on a fast-track development schedule upon completion of permitting and corporate approval. The mine and mill were commissioned 11 months after the start of construction and the project ended up $40 million under budget. Project design and construction management were provided by Placer Dome Project Development Division (PDD). History The Cortez Joint Venture has operated in northeast Lander County since the late 1960s. The business structure is comprised of 60% Placer Dome and 40%Kennecott Exploration. Throughout the years, production has been from several small open-pit deposits— Cortez, Horse Canyon, Gold Acres and now Pipeline.

"SkimAir®, Outotec’s Flash Flotation unit, is placed in the grinding circuit to float the valuable liberated mineral particles from the circulating load of the grinding process while still relatively coarse. Esperanza copper-gold deposit located near Sierra Gorda, Chile, hosts 535 Mtn ore grading 0.57 % copper, 0.27 g/t gold. A series of laboratory and pilot flotation tests were conducted to find out the flotation performance of different ore types both with and without the Flash Flotation. This data was used in modeling and simulating to find the optimal flow sheet for the highest Au and Cu recoveries with required Cu concentrate grade. Simulations with the HSC Chemistry 6.1 software showed that with the SkimAir® and Flash Cleaning it is possible to achieve the required copper grade of 27% Cu with 5% higher recovery for gold and 2% higher recovery for copper compared to the circuit without the Flash Flotation. The pilot tests with simulations were the back up for the installation of four Outotec SkimAir® SK 2400 Flash Cells in the Esperanza circuit for the processing 95.000 tpd of copper-gold ore.INTRODUCTIONEsperanza copper-gold deposit is located near the town of Sierra Gorda, 2nd Administrative Region in Chile. Deposit hosts 535 Mtn ore grading 0.57 % copper, 0.27 g/t gold. The main copper minerals are chalcopyrite and bornite. Gold is carried by native gold and solid solution of copper.Antofagasta Minerals S.A. conducted a series of flotation studies at SGS Minerals Services. The studies included both laboratory and pilot scale work. In the pilot scale study the applicability of the Flash Flotation technology was studied with High-grade Andesite and High-grade Porphyry samples (SGS Mineral Services). The Flash Flotation technology gave significantly higher recovery for gold than the conventional flotation circuit. The recoveries for copper were slightly higher using the conventional flotation."

"The geology of the Ore Fault Ni-Cu deposit has been reinterpreted in the light of recent studies of the geology of the Neoarchean Bird River Sill Complex and the occurrence of economic Ni-Cu and Zn-Cu-Ag mineralization. The Ni-Cu sulfides are hosted by the lower of two parallel NNW-trending and moderately W-dipping mafic-ultramafic intrusions related to the Bird River Sill Complex. The bod¬ies intruded a bimodal volcanic suite consisting of weakly deformed mafic flows and felsic pyroclastic rocks. The mafic volcanic rocks are geochemically related to the MORB-type rocks of the Lamprey Falls Formation, and the felsic volcanic rocks are related to arc-type rocks of the Peterson Creek Formation. The original pyroxene- and olivine-dominated mineralogy of the sills has been replaced by variable ser¬pentine-amphibole-talc-carbonate assemblages.The Ni-Cu sulfide assemblage exhibits textures and geochemical signatures typical of orthomagmatic sulfide mineralization. The sulfide minerals are associated with cumulate layers of magnetic ferrochromite that range in thickness from a few to tens of centimeters. A later event of Zn-Cu-Ag sulfide mineralization associated with quartz veining and garnet-chlorite alteration along a fault that strikes north, dips vertically, and cuts all rock types. The mineralized fault is cut by the NE-trending Peterson Creek shear zone. Where the Ni-Cu and Zn-Cu-Ag mineralized zones intersect, remnant magmatic features such as amphibolite or cumulate ferrochromite bands occur within quartz veins or local chlorite alteration. The mixed zones contain a very unusual polymetallic assemblage of Ni, Cu, Zn, Ag, and platinum group elements (PGE)."

Exposure?response relationships between the relative risk of lung cancer and quantitative measures of exposure to asbestos are available from a number of epidemiological studies. Meta-analyses of these relationships have been published by Lash et al. (1997) [Lash, T.L., Crouch, E.A.C., Green, L.C., 1997. A meta-analysis of the relation between cumulative exposure to asbestos and relative risk of lung cancer. Occup. Environ. Med. 54, 254?263] and Hodgson and Darnton (2000) [Hodgson, J.T., Darnton, A., 2000. The quantitative risks of mesothelioma and lung cancer in relation to asbestos exposure. Ann. Occup. Hyg. 44, 565?601]. In this paper, the risks derived in these meta-analyses have been compared. Lash et al., concentrated on process and found that the risk of lung cancer increased as the asbestos is refined by processing. Hodgson and Darnton concentrated on fibre type and found that the risk was highest for exposure to amphibole asbestos (crocidolite and amosite), lowest for chrysotile and intermediate for mixed exposure. Some of the differences between the conclusions from the two meta-analyses are a consequence of the choice of studies included. The range of asbestos types included in the studies in the analysis of Hodgson and Darnton was wider than that in Lash et al., enabling differences between fibre types to be analyzed more readily. There are situations where occupational exposure to chrysotile asbestos has shown no detectable increase in risk of lung cancer. concentrations) and physical nature of receiving streams, which in turn affects the stream ecosystem. Benthic macroinvertebrates are used to illustrate these impacts, and to investigate natural recovery in affected streams. In Charming Creek, a severely impacted stream in the Buller District, the macroinvertebrate community recovers diversity and the proportion of sensitive species (EPT) in the community is more significant with increasing downstream distance from the source of AMD. This is most likely due to dilution of AMD contaminated water by tributaries to the Charming Creek mainstream. Other impacted systems with less dilution from tributaries did not display similar levels of recovery. The effectiveness of remediation products BauxsolÖ and Zeolite was investigated using laboratory trials. Both products mitigated the toxicity of AMD and enhanced the survival of mayflies exposed to AMD contaminated water. Such products may be of use in the New Zealand environment but are likely to be most effective in conjunction with other systems (eg wetlands). Mitigating the impacts of AMD on stream ecosystems needs to include systems to directly address water chemistry issues (low pH, high metal concentrations) as a component of a holistic approach to restoring environmental conditions.

"Currently mine process studies and geochemical waste characterisation are considered as two interdependent studies, necessary for the development of the mine and inclusion in the environmental impact statement (EIS). Geochemical waste characterisation will utilise the simulated tailings produced by the mine process studies team to understand the behaviour of the tailings, but the two teams rarely integrate these to develop a coherent and agreed final design.Thorough mine waste geochemical assessments can develop processes to minimise environmental harm, resulting in substantial savings in the decommissioning, closure and rehabilitation phases, and may also be able to address changes in mineral processing methods that can result in substantial savings in process inputs, or even recovery of metal concentrates.Based on geochemical waste characterisation, the full cost of waste management can be calculated and incorporated into the costing of milling.  This allows for a more effective evaluation of the metallurgy.  A number of examples are presented in which substantial improvements have been made from the collaboration of both the metallurgical and geochemical teams during planning and the metallurgical team and environmental team during operations.*This paper is only available for individual download. The first documentary evidence for the use of fire to extract a metal was furnished by the wall paintings of the ancient Egyptians showing workers using the blowpipe and bellows to increase the temperature to melt gold in a crucible. Furnaces grew in size and complexity, coke replaced charcoal in the blast furnace, and the Industrial Revolution took place in England that gradually spread worldwide. More metals became known and new techniques were introduced for their extraction. Among these, metallothermic reactions became prominent in the nineteenth century immediately after the discovery of the electric current and its use to liberate the alkali metals from their salts. Once these metals became available, they were used to produce aluminium from alumina that resisted all other methods of attack. Aluminium, now available on a large scale, was used to decompose the most stable compounds and liberate more metals that became the basis of modern civilization.

Copper ores are widespread through the Lachlan Geosyncline in New South Wales, but the size of the orebodies is generally small. The largest deposits occur in the Cobar district where an iron-rich copper ore type has been developed in Silurian sediments. Similar de- . posits to the south in the Nymagee-Mt. Hope-Melrose districts are related to quartz feldspar porphyries of probable Upper Silurian age. Deposits to the east in the Tottenham-Girilambone districts are less complex mineralogically and are possibly related to an ultra-basic source.Copper mineralization in the Highlands further to the east is often developed in Ordovician andesite or MiddleUpper Silurian acid volcanic sequences. The deposits in andesite contain considerably less galena than those in the acid extrusives; a small proportion of the mineralization in the latter has texture, mineralogy, and geologic setting analogous to the Captain's Flat copper-Iead-zinc deposit, for which both syngenetic and epigenetic origins have been proposed. Very little copper mineralization occurs within granitic material, even though rocks of this type ranging from Silurian to Carboniferous in age crop out through much of the geosyncline, and the extent of the metal contribution from plutons to the deposits in volcanics is open to question. Numerous deposits are known in the contact zone around Mid-Devonian and Mid-Carboniferous granites, however, and the formation of these orebodies has undoubtedly been influenced by plutonic activity. Small occurrences of copper with associated minor nickel sulphides are developed in a narrow serpentinite belt of possible Lower-Middle Devonian age in the southern section of the Highlands.

The current state of knowledge concerning mesothelioma risk estimates is reviewed. Estimates of the risk of mesothelioma exist for the commercial asbestos fiber types chrysotile, amosite and crocidolite. Data also exist on which to assess risks for winchite (sodic tremolite) and anthophyllite asbestos. Uncertainty in estimates is primarily related to limitations in measurements of exposure. Differences in the dimensions of the various fiber types and of the same fiber types at different stages of processing add a further complication. Nevertheless, in practical terms, crocidolite presents the highest asbestos related mesothelioma risk. The risk associated with sodic tremolite (winchite) appears to be similar. In chrysotile miners and millers, the mesothelioma risk has been linked with exposure to asbestiform tremolite. Exposure to chrysotile in a pure form seems likely to present a very low if any risk of mesothelioma. While the majority of mesothelial tumors result from exposure to the asbestos minerals, there are other well established and suspected etiological agents. While a practical threshold seems to exist for exposure to chrysotile, it is unlikely to exist for the amphibole asbestos minerals, especially for crocidolite. To date there is no indication of an increased risk of mesothelioma resulting from non-commercial fiber exposure in the taconite industry. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Introduction The Fortitude deposit is located in Nevada's Battle Mountain mining district in the central Great Basin region of the Basin and Range province of the western US. The deposit is at Copper Canyon in the southernmost portion of the district, about 19 km (12 miles) southwest of Battle Mountain (Fig. 1). Mining activity in the district began in 1866 (Roberts and Arnold, 1965). Base and precious metals were mined by underground methods intermittently until 1955. Placer gold was first discovered at Copper Canyon in 1912. Moderate scale dredging of alluvial gravel at the mouth of Copper Canyon was conducted by the Natomas Co. from 1944 to 1955 (Johnson, 1973). In 1967, Duval Corp. began large scale open-pit copper mining. (Sayers, Tippett, and Fields, 1968). Copper prices decreased and precious metals prices increased in the mid-1970s so Duval's exploration efforts at Copper Canyon shifted to precious metals. These exploration efforts resulted in the discovery of the Tomboy-Minnie deposits and shortly afterward, the Northeast Extension deposit at Copper Canyon (Blake, Wotruba, and Theodore, 1984; Fig. 2). The Fortitude deposit was discovered in late 1980, after Duval had proceeded with precious metals production at Copper Canyon. Converting the existing plant facilities at Copper Canyon to a precious metals recovery system was completed in 1978 (Jackson, 1982). Production from the Tomboy-Minnie deposits began in early 1979. Precious metals production moved to the Northeast Extension deposit in 1982. In late 1984, after three years of preproduction stripping and mining of the Upper Fortitude ore zone, production from the higher grade Lower Fortitude ore zone began. Currently, Battle Mountain Gold Co. operates the Fortitude deposit. Production from the Battle Mountain mining district before 1967 included 4.6 t (150,000 oz) of gold, 65.3 t (2.1 million oz) of silver, 13.6 kt (15,000 st) of copper, 4.5 kt (5,000 st) of lead, and 13.6 kt (15,000 st) of zinc (Roberts and Arnold, 1965). At the time of Duval's 1967 start-up, ore reserves at Copper Canyon included 12.6 Mt (14 million st) in the East ore body and another 3.6 Mt (4 million st) in the West ore body. Both had average grades of 0.79% copper, 16.1 g/t (0.47 oz per st) silver and 0.86 g/t (0.025 oz per st) gold (Blake et al., 1984). The Tomboy-Minnie deposits collectively contained 3.5 Mt (3.9 million st) of ore grading 3.09 g/t (0.09 oz per st) gold and 9.6 g/t (0.28 oz per st) silver. The Northeast Extension reserves were identified as 1.4 Mt (1.5 million st) of ore with an average grade of 2.9 g/t (0.085 oz per st) gold and 5.1 g/t (0.15 oz per st) silver. Initial total reserve estimates for the Fortitude deposit were 14.5 Mt (16 million st) grading 5.14 g/t (0.15 oz per st) gold and 29.8 g/t (0.87 oz per st) silver (Jackson, 1982). Therefore, before large scale mining, the Copper Canyon area contained a minimum of 102.6 t (3.3 million oz) of gold and 541 t (17.4 million oz) of silver as mineable reserves. The Fortitude deposit reserves as of Jan. 1, 1985 were 10.6 Mt (11 million st) grading at 5.28 g/t (0.154 oz per st) gold and 28.5 g/t (0.83 oz per st) silver.
