A procedure was required for the rapid determination of silicon in low-alloy irons and a suitable method used the formation and reduction of silicomolybdic acid at 50°C. The procedure gives results for elemental silicon and this enables the correct computation of oxidation requirements in basic oxygen steelmaking. The method could be useful in iron foundries which have not installed direct reading spectrometers.INTRODUCTIONOxygen steelmaking experiments required rapid determinations of 0,5-1,6 per cent silicon in iron (3-4 per cent C) within 10 min of sampling; a reproducibility better than ±0.03 per cent Si was desired. Only elemental silicon (Si°) is of interest as a fuel in basic oxygen steelmaking technology, and the proposed procedure determines exclusively this form of silicon. The method is described as it may prove useful to other workers although the interference study would be incomplete for some applications.The analysis of silicon in iron is frequently obtained using direct reading spectrometers, but for the proposed experiments the spectrometers could not be used because of the prohibitive distance from the furnace. ON mineral lease 38 of the Sulphide Corporation Limited, Broken Hill, a shaft was sunk in the early days Ior prospecting purposes and at the present time it is accessible as far as the 1000-ft. level where a connexion exists with the main workings of the Corporation's Central Mine, mineral lease 9. About the year 1895· a crosscut was driven east from this shaft at the 1330-ft. level cutting the Central Ore-body in mineral lease 9 and the shaft is supposed to extend a further depth of 25 ft; but no records of any of this work are in existence, the whole of the evidence being based on hearsay and memory:Fig. 1 shows the position of the Extended shaft in relation to the main workings. Keywords: Copper, ion exchange, sulfonic acid, bis-picolylamine, ion exchange modeling, ion exchange kinetics As part of an investigation into the feasibility of using ion exchange resins to recover copper from aqueous waste streams generated during the manufacturing of semiconductor devices, the uptake of copper onto two ion exchange resins was investigated. The resins studied were DOWEX G-26, a standard gel type sulfonic acid resin, and DOWEX M4195, a macroporous chelating resin with a bis-picolylamine functional group. The equilibrium and kinetic behavior of the uptake of copper were investigated over a range of copper concentrations with constant sulfate concentration and different levels of acidity. The homogeneous structure of the G-26 resin yields equilibrium relationships that fit the Langmuir equation, and equilibration times of less than 30 minutes. The uptake behavior of M4195 is complicated by the need to absorb co-ions to maintain electroneutrality, resulting in uptake profiles that change character with increasing copper concentrations, and extended equilibration times.

INTRODUCTION Project Description The Silver Line is a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Line and is Boston?s newest transit service. Silver Line Phase I extends along Washington Street entirely on the surface in priority bus lanes from Dudley Station in Roxbury through the South End and Chinatown neighborhoods to downtown Boston. The Phase I opened in July 2002. Silver Line Phase II consists of an underground transit tunnel from South Station to the South Boston Waterfront with underground stations at Courthouse and World Trade Center to Silver Line Way east of D Street. Phase II continues through the Ted Williams Tunnel to all the terminals at Logan Airport, and on the surface to the Boston Marine Industrial Park and City Point. Phase II opened in December 2004. Silver Line Phase III is a one mile tunnel connection to the existing Phase II tunnel in the vicinity of South Station and will eventually portal on Tremont Street just north of Marginal Road. After leaving the portal, the buses will use dedicated bus only lanes on the surface roadway network to connect to the Phase I service. Figure 1 shows the alignment of the Silver Line upon completion of the Phase III project.

Measurement of densities, susceptibilities, permanent magnetization, and calculation of demagnetization factors has allowed computer modelling of gravity and magnetic data over the Middleback Range iron formations of South Australia. As well as providing structural information, the study emphasizes the effects of weathering on the interpretation of magnetic data.

According to reports received by the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, as of January 1, 1929 there were 413 completed refineries in the United States, with a total daily crude-oil capacity of 3,509,540 barrels. In addition, 14 refineries, with a potential capacity of 99,000 barrels, were being constructed. Of the completed refineries, 341, with a capacity of 3,325,890 barrels, or 95 per cent of the total capacity, were in operation; and 72, with a capacity of 183,650 barrels, or 5 per cent of the total, were shut down. The improved condition of the refining industry in 1928 was indicated in several ways; namely, in an increase in the total capacity of the completed plants, in the opening up of a few plants which were shut down during 1927, in a decrease in the number of plants dismantled, and in an increase in the number of plants under construction. The majority of the refiners have followed a steady expansion program commensurate in most cases with the increase in demand for petroleum products. Obsolete equipment has been dismantled and modern equipment has been installed, with the net result that the total capacity of the completed refineries in the United States has shown a steady increase since January 1, 1918, the date of the first Bureau of Mines survey. Between January 1, 1928, and January 1, 1929, the number of completed plants fell from 423 to 413, but their total capacity increase 259,160 barrels, or 8 per cent. This compares with an increase in runs to stills of domestic and foreign crude petroleum of 10 per cent, and of domestic crude alone of 7 per cent.

"The experiments were conducted to investigate the influence of various process parameters in rotary degassing of aluminum alloy AS5U3G. Degassing was carried out by use of argon inert gas. The flow rate of the gas was investigated in the range of 12 to 21 L/min., 350 to 500 rpm rotor speed, 6 to 12 minutes degassing time, and 755°C to 780°C melt temperature. Degassing efficiency was evaluated through measuring the density of RPT samples. By optimizing the process parameters, RPT sample density was increased up to 2.73 g/cm3, which guaranties the production of high-quality aluminum castings. Tensile strength and elongation were increased considerably by degassing process. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) shows small size and well-distributed microporosity. IntroductionOne of the major problems associated with the casting of aluminum alloys is the formation of gas porosity. Aluminum and its alloys are very susceptible to hydrogen absorption. Because solubility is much lower in solid state than liquid state, hydrogen atoms leave their position during solidification and combine together to form hydrogen molecules. These micrometer- scale cavities, called microporosity, cause the reduction of mechanical properties, particularly strength, ductility, fracture toughness, fatigue resistance, pressure tightness, and corrosion resistance (Laslaz, 1991; Jorstad and Rasmussen, 1993; Sigworth and Wang, 1994; Korasani, 1996; Anson and Gruzleski, 1999; Zhang et al., 2000). To avoid these problems and produce good quality castings, it is necessary to remove hydrogen from the melt. Several methods are available for degassing aluminum melt. One of them is a rotary degassing system using inert gas, e.g. Ar or N2. Various thermodynamic and kinetic factors govern the removal of hydrogen from molten aluminum (Anderson, 1987; Sigworth, 1987; Pignault, 1993; King and Reynolds, 1995). These are some parameters that affect degassing efficiency. Some of them are discussed here and some are examined in this project."

Test equipment has been developed to record automatically both the displacement of the pile head and the load applied during a conventional maintained load pile test. Some systems also have, in addition, been fitted with the facility for maintaining the applied load, as set by the operator, at very constant levels. The advantages are both commercial and technical, but a well trained operator has to be in attendance to control the test. Since typical test specifications in the UK require more than 19 hours to complete, it became inevitable that at least one equipment operator remained on site to expedite the test for its duration. Although electronic measurement and data logging of load tests may be more safe than previous direct observation of dial gauges. A single person remaining on a construction site alone is not to be recommended, even if they are just supervising the test. Further development of the testing system produced equipment which will perform the entire test specification as required without operator intervention. To achieve this, full automation is employed. The patented method particularly addresses the safety requirements and by using additional sensors, detects any uncharacteristic behaviour of the pile under test or of the reaction system and the equipment takes appropriate action in a controlled and safe manner. The quality of test data returned from these automated systems is a key element when analysing pile behaviour with models such as CEMSOLVE? and TIMESETTM. These analysis methods often indicate ground disturbance resulting from installation technique and have allowed pile design to be optimised using actual field data rather than theoretical considerations alone. An additional feature is remote access, this allows the data recorded to be transferred and the progress of the test to be viewed from practically any location. This permits experts to view the data 'live' and allows rapid diagnosis of any problems with the expected pile behaviour.

During the period January 1, 1977 through July 31, 1977, 5 percent (264,000 tons) of U.S. capacity was closed due to power curtailments in the Pacific Northwest because of the shortage of water. During July, one plant in Tennessee cut production by 50,000 tons annually due to a power reduction by the Tennessee Valley Authority. Full capacity production was resumed at a West Virginia smelter during September. If demand for aluminum is strong it seems likely that aluminum supply during the remainder of 1977 and in 1978 will be tight. The price was increased 3¢ per pound to 51¢ per pound effective March 28, 1977, and by an additional 2¢ per pound to 53¢ per pound, effective July 5, 1977. New projects and expansion of existing facilities are planned by Australian aluminum companies over the next 2 to 3 years. The companies listed have committed themselves to spending approximately A$801 million: Alcoa of Australia Ltd. -New alumina plant at Wagerup, south of Perth. Darling Ranges bauxite is located near the proposed project. A$650 million. Coma 1 co Industries Pty. Ltd. -Increase bauxite mining capacity and upgrade or replace other facilities at its Weipa mines on Cape York Peninsula region of Northern Queensland. A$81 million. Alcan Australia Ltd. -Expansion program that will increase capacity of the Kurri Kurri aluminum smelter north of Sydney about 50 percent, and improvement of other facilities at the plant. A$70 million.

This paper sets out to examine the possible relationships between three factors, they are, the rate of growth of world production of minerals, the growth of Australian production and the growth of scientific and engineering knowledge.The first two are quantified, in terms of tonnes and value. The third, an abstract concept "knowledge", requires to be quantified, in terms of manpower.A mathematical model, which has general application, was derived to demonstrate certain axiomatic premises and to define, more precisely, basic concepts related to the philosophy of knowledge.Finally a summary is made of education-cum-industry issues.

The effect of microwave radiation on the processing of Palabora open pit ore has been investigated. Significant reductions in Bond work index are demonstrated for microwave treated samples. Reductions in work index were found to be sensitive to applied power level and method of application. After single stage magnetic separation tests, improvements in recovery of FeO were noted. However, these were curtailed by oxidation of the magnetite species as a result of continued heating. The effects of microwave radiation upon the recovery of copper after froth flotation were also quantified. Small initial increases in recovery of copper were note dafter microwave treatment. However, with prolonged exposure, recovery was found to decrease. Overall recovery of copper was not affected except for samples treated for extended duration. The influence of microwave treatment upon the conventional Palabora grinding circuit has been quantified with the use of USIMPAC software. Deposits of the Reefton Goldfield, West Coast, New Zealand, are hosted on N-NE striking, upright folds of the Greenland Group. High-grade quartz lodes are hosted on axial planar shears, typically have short strike lengths, and form shoots that pitch steeply on the hosting shears. Deposits within the field area of a detailed structural study share these characteristics. Field mapping and microstructural analysis have demonstrated that the Greenland Group was affected by a multideformational sequence. Gold mineralisation is hosted on shears axial planar to the F2 folds, but occurred during a subsequent deformation event (D4). Deformation during D4 resulted from N-NE directed shortening, near parallel to the trend of the F2 folds. This event produced F4 kink folds that were accommodated by layer parallel slip on S2 parallel shears, gold mineralisation during D4 being confined to the dilational hinges of F4 kink folds. The semi-brittle nature of D4 allowed the formation of stockwork veining and disseminated mineralisation within the F4 hinge zones. Most deposits within the goldfield are similar to those within the field area, and are interpreted to have been mineralised during D4. The two largest known deposits within the goldfield, however, are distinct. The Blackwater Deposit, striking parallel to the hosting folds, has a combined strike length of 1 km. The Globe-Progress Deposit is hosted on an E-W striking discordant shear in which a brittle zone of disseminated mineralisation encompasses high-grade quartz lodes. The characteristics that distiguish the Globe and Blackwater deposits may be due to formation before and after D4 respectively. Detailed field mapping in the vicinity of known deposits throughout the goldfield will further refine the relationships between the F2 folds, later deformations and the localisation of ore deposits. Additional mapping may also help constrain the position, orientation and extent of additional orebodies.

Microaerobic biodegradation oflow-grade manganese dioxide slurry tailings was demonstrated in enrichment cultures treated with dilute molasses at 30°C and pH 5·8. Supplementary nitrogenous nutrients, yeast extract addition and pH adjustment were not required.Continuously stirred, air-limited reactors were superior to still intermittently agitated cultures, in that, at 5 per cent (w/v) MnOz tailings and 5 per cent (w/v) molasses, the yield of 0.12 g Mn++/g molasses, the rate ofleaching of 1·06 g Mn++/l/d and a recovery of Mn++ of 58 percent from MnOz were 2·8 times, 1·7 times and 1·9 times greater, respectively. The best compromise in yield (0·45 g Mn++/g molasses) and rate ofdissolution (0·73 gMn++/l/d) was at 1 per cent (w/v) molasses in a stirred reactor.Where leaching organisms were separated from sterile ore by a bacteria impermeable membrane leaching was shown to be some 20 per cent due to diffusible metabolites and 80 per cent due to a direct contact between the bacteria and the ore particle's surfaces.

The Aluminum Company of America announced a temporary reduction of the operating rate at its primary aluminum plant at Palestine, TX where it is developing a new process to produce aluminum metal by electrolysis of aluminum chloride, Output will be reduced by half to about 7,500 tons per year while some improvements are being made on the chemical segment of the plant. The modifications were expected to take 3 to 4 years to complete. Alcan Alumininum Ltd., a major U.S. supplier of aluminum, reported declaration of force majeure on aluminum ingot shipment commitments following the shutdown of its primary aluminum plants at Arvida, Isle Maligne, and Beauharnois, Que. The shutdowns, which began early in June, resulted from management and labor differences.

With a particular electrode configuration, and a particular combination of electrode voltage and roll speed, a relatively small increase in electrode voltage, or a relatively small decrease in roll speed, resultsin a marked improvement in the separation of zircon from ilmenite. In general, fine minerals can be separated using a higher roll speed, or a lower electrode voltage, than is required to separate coarse minerals. The ionizing electrode should be reasonably close to the point at which mineral is fed on to the roll, and nearer to the roll than the non-ionizing electrode. The optimum conditions for the separation of zircon from ilmenite may not apply for the separation of other non-conductors from other conductors.INTRODUCTIONAlthough the high tension separators used in the Australian beach sand industry are efficient, this efficiency has been gained very largely by a process of trial and error, and not by a systematic study of the effects of changes in the operating variables. The optimum roll speed for a particular electrode position and electrode voltage, and the optimum electrode voltage for a particular roll speed and electrode position, can both be determined quite readily. It is not so simple to determine the optimum electrode position for a particular electrode voltage and roll speed. The reason for this is that the electrode used in high tension separators consists of two parts-an ionizing and a non-ionizing electrode respectively. The angular and radial positions of these electrodes, relative to the feed roll and to each other, affect the behaviour of conductors and non-conductors to varying degrees.
