Mining at Waihi on the Martha Hill commenced in 1878 and between 1892 and 1953 produced 35 million ounces of bullion from some 13.5 million short tons of ore from 40 named quartz reefs. The general geology of the ore is recorded in detail with differing interpretations by Bell and Fraser (1912) and Morgan (1924). The reefs and stringers have formed by fissure filling and replacement in mainly quartz andesite dacite flows within the Waihi 'Graben'. The host rocks are extensively propylitised with intense alteration forming zones of kaolin adjacent to the main reefs.

The Horn Island gold and mineral field produced 194 kilograms of gold in the 4 years subsequent to its discovery in 1894, from an area of shallow workings 1.5 kilometres x 0.5 kilometres. Gold deposits in the adjacent Prince of Wales, Hammond and Possession Islands also drew attention at that time.These islands form part of a Carboniferous sequence of ignimbrites (Torres Strait Volcanics) intruded by the Badu Granite and minor volcanics within the Cape York-Oriomo Ridge. Gold is associated with the epithermal stages of igneous activity. Recent exploration has defined sub-horizontal zones of disseminated gold mineralisation in the sub-surface, as well as reserves in the outcropping sub-vertical structures mined in the past. Released estimates of 170,00 tonnes proven ore and 550,000 probable ore at 4 grams per tonne gold, have been established.Gold is mostly contained in quartz vein stockworks and hydrothermal breccias within the intensely propylitised medium grained granites which form the local host rocks within the coarse grained Badu Granite. Associated vein minerals are sulphides (primarily of lead, zinc and iron) and calcite. Various intrusions of porphyry, aplite and granodiorite occur through the prospect area.

Reduce the potential for injuries in underground mines by providing an alternative to manually lifting and holding heavy roof-support beams. The Problem I-beams, rail sections, and wooden cross-beams are often used in mine haulageways where extensive roof support is needed. Studies by the Bureau of Mines have shown that many mines must resort to manually lifting, moving and installing these beams. Such manual-handling activities have the potential for causing injury to mine workers, particularly back injuries. I-beams used for roof support can typically weigh from 400-500 lbs. Rail sections weigh about the same as the I-beams. Wooden beams can weigh from 200 to 300 lbs. To lift a single beam usually requires the efforts of 3 to 5 mine personnel.

The Mining Association of Canada launched the Towards Sustainable Mining initiative in 2004. TSM’s goal is to improve the mining industry’s performance by aligning its actions with the priorities and values of Canadians. The initiative currently includes performance indicators for four areas: tailings management, energy use and greenhouse gas management, external outreach and corporate crisis management planning. Over the past year, the association has been designing a performance assessment and verification system for these performance areas, as its members prepare to move to external verification of their performance in 2006. The presentation will describe the initiative and its evolution, as well as the challenges faced in developing a verification system applicable to an entire sector.

For years urethane screen surfaces have been used in a wide range of wet screening applications where openings from as fine as 100 microns and coarser have been used. The purpose of this paper is to expose the reader to new developments in both screen surface and screening equipment technologies which allow an end user to consider urethane screen surfaces for fine screening applications. These technologies allow an end user to use the inherent advantages of urethane with regards to wear resistance while also realizing the benefits that a high oper area urethane screen surface can bring. These benefits include non blinding characteristics and feed capacities that which rival that of traditional stainless steel surfaces. The paper will highlight the features of this patented urethane screen surface technology and the screening machines they are used in conjunction with. There will also be a presentation of case studies of commercial installations where these technologies are utilized. These case studies are from the base metals industry therefore relevance to the conference is direct and not inferred. Included in the paper will also be constraints which must be taken into account when considering urethane screen surfaces such as temperature and chemical attacks. This paper will expose potential end users to a possibility of using screens to achieve extremely accurate size separations in applications where screens were previously not considered. The paper will explain and demonstrate that prior concerns of screen surface blinding, high screen surface consumption rates and large screen surface area requirements can be eliminated by proper utilization of high open area urethane screen surfaces.

O complexo de extração, beneficiamento e transporte de minério de ferro denominado Minas-Rio, de propriedade da Anglo American, consome na moagem primária uma grande quantidade de corpos moedores (bolas metálicas). Recentemente, foi desenvolvido em 4 etapas um trabalho para automatizar a reposição dos corpos moedores e estabilizar o grau de enchimento do moinho. Na etapa A, com a reposição sendo realizada com auxílio de um operador. Na etapa B, com a reposição sendo realizada automaticamente de acordo com uma taxa de reposição predefinida. Nas etapas C e D, com a taxa de reposição sendo alterada por meio do sistema de controle avançado OCS-4D©, considerando a potência do moinho como indicação indireta do grau de enchimento. É possível verificar após a implementação das modificações uma maior estabilidade da potência e consequentemente maior estabilidade do grau de enchimento.

Ventilation network modeling in mine planning dates back at least three decades, but it is not widely accepted and/or practiced until the last decade, thanks to the advent of modern computers with their increase d speed and storage space. There are at least half a dozen such modeling software packages available on the market each with different features and acceptance. This paper compares five popular software packages,?? VnetPC Pro, MineVent, VentSIM Visual, VentGraph and MFIRE 3.0. A case study using Missouri S&T?s Experimental Mine is conducted to compare the five software packages in features, interface, output display and user-friendliness.

The socio economic risks of mining in South Africa have been emerging for some time now, and have been brought into sharp relief by recent events in the platinum sector. The slow pace of social upliftment in the country has lead to widespread social unrest with consequent calls for different forms of resource nationalism. Fundamentally, the key stakeholders are not fully aligned, and are not engaging productively. This poses significant above-the-ground risk to mining companies. Measuring social impact, deploying inclusive solutions and engaging effectively with stakeholders are three ways in which mining companies can mitigate this risk.

Despite modest improvements in the performance of domestic interest rates and gross national product,1 fixed investment in domestic producers' durable equipment continued to weaken during the second quarter of 1982 and declined at a 12.8 percent annual rate compared with the first quarter.2 Large declines occurred during the second quarter in expenditures on many of the major mineral-consuming industries such as aircraft, computers, agricultural and construction machinery and mining and oil field equipment. These data appear to be consistent with the low level of business investment plans for 1982 reported in the DOC's Bureau of Economic Analysis survey of expenditures on new plant and equipment.3 Domestic and foreign industrial production and mineral industry production activities continued to decline in the most recent period because of weak demand conditions (Tables 1 and 2). The U.S. mining production index declined 7.7 percent between April and June as compared with 1.2 percent for total U.S. industrial production (Table 1).

"AbstractA laboratory study has been undertaken to establish common understanding of the creep phenomenon of a Portuguese soft soil chemically stabilised with binders. In order to study the effect of different stress levels on the strength and on the creep behavior of the stabilised soil, oedometer creep tests and unconfined compressive tests were performed at different curing times. Results show that the creep stress level does not influence the unconfined compressive strength. In addition, the creep phenomenon increases the unconfined compressive strength of the treated soil. Two different secondary compression indexes were recognized from the one-dimensional compression curve which increase with an exponential trend with the creep stress level.IntroductionConstruction on soft soils requires a mandatory soil stabilization work to improve mechanical characteristics of the natural soil. Deep mixing method is a worldwide employed ground improvement method, nevertheless the creep phenomenon hasn’t been yet thoroughly analyzed. Most of the published papers have focused on the analysis of the compressibility and the strength of the soil-binder mixtures without considering the creep phenomenon. However, numerical results (Venda Oliveira et al. 2009) have shown that although settlements that occur during the creep stage (namely creep strains) are less in case of treated columns, they are still important especially due to the high loads applied to the stabilised soil. The few published studies about creep behavior of soil-binder mixtures reveal that the stabilization of an organic soil with cement induces a reduction of creep deformations, which is related to the amount of cement used and that the increase of the organic matter of the soil has a negative impact on soil stabilization, further inducing a slight increase in the creep deformations (Venda Oliveira et al. 2012).As part of the current research the effect of different stress levels on the creep behavior of a soft clayey-silt soil was studied. The binder mixture used to enhance the properties of the soil had a specific composition and quantity. Unconfined compressive strength tests (UCS) and UCS creep tests were carried out at pre-set curing times in order to analyze the creep behavior of the soil-binder mixture. In particular five different creep stress levels were studied to understand its influence on the strength and on the compressibility of the stabilised soil. In addition, considerations about the secondary consolidation index are also presented."

A new process of recycling valuable metals containing in the slag of jamesonite smelting in the blast furnace was studied. In this process, the valuable metals such as Pb, Sb, Zn and In etc. were fumed and volatilized and enriched in the dust firstly and then the dust was leached by sulfuric acid. In the leaching procedure, Zn and In in the dust entered into the leaching solution and were separated from Pb and Sb which remained in the residue.The optimal operation conditions of the fuming procedure are as follows: the mass ratio of the blast furnace slag, coal powder and lime are 100:22:10 respectively and the fuming time are 1.5~2.5 h, the fuming temperature is not below 1200C and the volatilization rates of Pb, Sb, Zn and In are 95%, 92%, 86% and 75% respectively. The optimal conditions for the leaching procedure are also presented: the consumption of sulfuric acid is 1.15 times of the theoretical consumption, the ratio of liquid to solid is 4:1 and the leaching temperature, leaching -1time and stirring speed are 90, 1.5h and 300 r?min separately. The leaching rates of Zn and In are 98.5% and 95.2% respectively. The experimental results shows that the valuable metals in the dust can be recovered and separated effectively by this process and the?ir recovery efficiencies are as follows: Pb94%,Sb91%, Zn84% and In69%.

El proyecto Antapaccay es un depósito tipo pórfido-skarn de Cu (Ag, Au y Mo) perteneciente a la División Sur de Xstrata Copper, donde se tiene planificado la explotación a través de dos tajos abiertos denominados Norte y Sur. Para ello, se realizó una extensa campaña de investigaciones geotécnicas con la finalidad de determinar los parámetros geotécnicos y el comportamiento geomecánico del macizo rocoso presente y así evaluar la estabilidad de los taludes de diseño. En ese sentido, el presente textoseñala los análisis geoestadísticos (variografía) de los parámetros geotécnicos empleando el método de interpolación espacial kriging, presenta el modelo geotécnico a través de los parámetros geomecánicos de resistencia, así como la metodología seguida en los análisis de estabilidad con el método rígido plástico bidimensional de equilibrio límite.

"A large-scale panel destress blast was fired at Brunswick mine in the fall of 1999 in order to reduce the ground stresses in a critically important neighbouring mining region. This work, sponsored by the Mining Division of CAMIRO and Brunswick mine, consisted in heavily choke-blasting — and subsequently leaving in place — a massive waste sulphide pillar in the southwest end of the 1000 m level. This paper describes the approach and design methodology used to try to maximize breakage in the rock mass in the area to destress, while minimizing damage to critical infrastructures in the vicinity. The loading operations, as well as the results of the blast — in terms of its field performances, as recorded by near-field blast vibration monitoring equipment, visual postblast assessments and measured impact on the regional stress field — are discussed as well. A brief comparison between the measured stress changes and inelastic numerical modelling of the test site is also presented.Un tir à grande échelle de relâchement des contraintes dans un pilier a été effectué à la mine Brunswick à la fin de l’automne 1999 dans le but de diminuer les contraintes de terrain dans une très importante zone de production adjascente. Ces travaux, financés par la division minière de CAMIRO et la mine Brunswick, consistaient à tirer violemment sans aucune face libre, et à laisser en place, un pilier de sulphures massifs au sud-ouest du niveau 1000 m. Cet article décrit l’approche et la démarche conceptuelle utilisées pour tenter de maximiser les fractures dans le pilier visé, tout en minimisant les dommages collatéraux à des infrastructures critiques se trouvant dans les environs immédiats. Les opérations de chargement des explosifs et les résultats du tir — en termes de ses performances, telles qu’évaluées par de l’équipement de monitoring rapproché des vibrations de tir, d’observations visuelles, et de son impact sur les contraintes de terrain locales — sont également discutés."

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 252 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 17 States. All of the samples were obtained and analyzed during calendar year 1976 as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576.3 The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the public in general. Eighteen previous publications have presented the results of 11,065 gas analyses prior to 1976. Cooling of critical furnace equipment to produce freeze lining is of particular interest as many metallurgical processes are intensified while attempting to prolong campaign life. This idea was combined with high-capacity heat pipes in the design of a copper slag launder. The design methodology of the launder and heat pipe cooling system is examined in this paper. With reliable material properties and operating conditions, CFD was used to quantitatively predict the skull thickness and the corresponding heat load applied to the slag launder. The operational limitations of heat pipe technology were considered and an appropriate cooling system was incorporated into the model. Parametric modeling was used to simulate several launder and heat pipe configurations. The generated results were then used to optimize the design of the launder, which was built and tested in August of 2005. The experimental performance of the cooling system is evaluated and compared with the model results.

In a review of so 40 papers on damage to residential structures resulting from blasting, only 3 were found that present data on the observed amplitude and frequency of the vibration levels produced by blasting together with an observed degree of damage to a residential structure. The data from these three reports have been analyzed statistically to determine if one of the quantities, displacement, velocity, or acceleration, is more reliable than the others for estimating the degree of damage to a residential structure. From this analysis the conclusion is drawn that a given degree of damage to a structure is most closely related to the magnitude of the particle velocity of the wave motion passing thru the earth at the structure location. On the average, only minor damage it observed for peak particle velocities of 5.4 inches per second, and major damage is observed for peak particle velocities of 7.6 inches per second. When the spread of the data is taken into consideration, the following statement can be made: Wave motions that have a peak particle velocity in excess of 2 inches per second have a fair probability of producing some damage to structures, whereas wave motions that have a peak velocity less than 2 inches per second have a very low probability of causing any damage. Therefore, the recommendation is made that vibration levels in the vicinity of residential structures should be maintained below a peat particle velocity of 2 inches per second. The above criterion for safe blasting is considered to hold over a wide variety of soil and rock conditions because the original data were obtained for a wide range of soil and rock conditions and on various types of residential structures. O carbono tem atraído a atenção em pesquisas científicas e aplicações tecnológicas devido à diversidade das propriedades estruturais e elétricas. A proposta deste trabalho é produzir diamantes apartir de hidrocarboneto aromático em especial o Antraceno. Este possui uma estrutura de pelo menos 2 anéis aromáticos, de 5 ou 6 átomos de carbono. Com isso, ele foi submetido à pressão de 3,5GPa a uma temperatura de 1000ºC para a realização do processo de grafitização. Após este processo o grafite produzido foi misturado a liga Ni-Mn no sistema catalisador-solvente para o processo de síntese, com uma pressão de 4,5GPa e uma temperatura de 1300ºC com variação no tempo de realização da síntese de 30 a 120s. Para a realização dos cálculos dos parâmetros estruturais foi realizado ensaio de Difração de Raios-X (DRX) e para analisar os aspectos morfológicos foi realizado análise de Microscopia Eletronica de Varredura (MEV). Os resultados apresentam uma evolução dos parâmetros estruturais em relação ao tempoe temperatura de síntese, pode-se observar a presença de diamante nas amostras produzidas por Antraceno com maiores temperaturas de síntese.

Esse trabalho tem como objetivo buscar um melhor entendimento dos fatores que influenciam de forma significativa nas propriedades mecânicas do vergalhão 1350AA, avaliando especificamente a influência da temperatura de bobinamento. Foram retiradas amostras de seis bobinas e então submetidas à diferentes temperaturas de recozimento por um período específico e analisadas mecanicamente e microscopicamente. Os ensaios de tração mostraram que o alumínio 1350 AA sofre uma influência significativa da temperatura, cujo comportamento foi muito similar ao apresentado na literatura. Constatou-se que o fenômeno de recuperação ocorreu de forma mais significativa a temperaturas elevadas. O trabalho permitiu concluir que é necessário um resfriamento mais eficiente no vergalhão para que a variação de LRT seja minimizada.
