Coal dust explosions in underground coal mines are prevented by generous application of rock dust (usually limestone). If an explosion should occur, the rock dust disperses, mixes with the coal dust and prevents flame propagation by acting as a thermal inhibitor or heat sink. To investigate this process in more detail, a number of explosion experiments using various coal dust and limestone rock dust mixes have been carried out at the Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM). These were conducted in a single entry of about 1600 ft (488m) in length and initiated with a methane gas explosion. A consistent set of post-explosion floor dust samples were taken along the entry after each test. These dust samples have been analyzed in the laboratory using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and solubility to determine how the limestone rock dust behaved during the coal dust / rock dust explosions. The preliminary results are reported in this paper and indicate that the chemistry of limestone plays an important role in its capacity to inhibit coal dust explosions. The results also show that it may be possible to estimate the intensity of the explosion using these conventional methods of analysis. Liberation (the process of destroying the interlock between unwanted materials, such as mineral matter and pyrite, and coal) is one of the most important precursors to the benefication of raw coal in order to produce high grade marketable coals at economical recovery levels. Liberation is achieved usually by comminuting the raw coal. However, because of the significant interaction between the production of fine particles to achieve liberation and the cost of separating fine particles, the coal industry needs a method projecting the change in washability with size reduction. Such a projection can be combined with size reduction and separation simulators in order to examine completely beneficiation circuitry to produce coals of stringent specification. This paper presents the development of an appropriate liberation model for coal and its solution by Monte Carlo simulation to predict the expected washability of the raw coal as a function of comminution. It includes model validation with a known binary mixture as well as with a known teritary mixture.

The mineral Industry, following the economy as a whole, experienced little growth in 1992. However, with modernized plants, efficient workforces, and lower operating costs, the industry is well positioned to take advantage of possible improvement in the national economy during 1993. In addition to the significant 1992 events highlighted below, important events, trends, and issues within individual mineral industries are addressed in the commodity sections that follow. The value of processed materials of mineral origin is estimated to have been about $310 billion in 1992. The value of U.S. raw nonfuel minerals production in 1992 is estimated at approximately $32 billion, a 3% increase over 1991. The value of domestic minerals production has increased in all but 4 of the last 32 years.

El presente trabajo describe la geología de la mina Toquepala -en tanto genera información de modelos geológicos y numéricos para realizar un planeamiento corto largo plazo de calidad, especialmente en los bordes del cuerpo donde la ley se hace marginal, así también se facilita a la concentradora, las características geometalurgicas del mineral a ser tratado en corto y largo plazo, considerando el costo beneficio y planificación de sus recuperaciones. Finalmente, se muestra los controles geológicos para dar soporte a las operaciones minerometalúrgicas, tales como el mapeo, control de leyes, reconciliaciones, microscopia de opacos, y los reportes de control diario, mensual y anual.

With an experimental apparatus developed recently, model tests on piles were conducted in sand subjected to triangular soil movement profiles. Four instrumented piles tests are reported, which show the pile behavior predominantly determined by soil sliding depth. Axial load can create additional bending moment and pile deflection, which also make mode of pile-soil interaction change with sliding depth. Limiting resistance was found 1.5~3 times higher than currently used for laterally loaded piles in sand.

"Potash processing in Canada commenced on a commercial scale in 1962. Over the last 25 years it has grown into a world-class industry with many advances in processing technology. As it is a relatively young industry, many more advances can be expected. Unlike much of the mineral production in Canada, potash is sold as a range of finished products. The processing involves potash recovery and finishing in about equal amounts in terms of the effort of processing. Environmental concerns are not insignificant and are being treated uniquely in some areas. Research and development efforts, while not carried out on a large scale, are attacking industry problems on a wide front.THE INDUSTRYThe Canadian potash industry has 12 producing mines, 10 in Saskatchewan and 2 in New Brunswick. The total productive capacity of the industry is 18,300,000 tonnes of products per year. At capacity, the industry 1•ill process the equivalent of about 53,000,000 tonnes of ore per year. Plants range in size from 8,000 tonnes to 24,000 tonnes of feed per operating day. In product terms this is from 2,500 to 3,500 tonnes of products per day.Of the 12 mines, 11 are conventional underground mining operations with potash recovery principally by flotation supplemented by crystallization and one is a solution mine where mining is achieved by dissolving the potash and salt in underground caverns and then treating the solution in an evaporator/ crystallizer circuit. In all plants there is commonality of unit operation in the product screening and compaction sections. There are three principal ores being treated in the conventional plants. Ticor South Africa is currently involved in the mining and processing of a heavy mineral oredeposit at Hillendale Mine on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast. The orebody is characterized by a high ultra fine fraction (-45µm) that has a variable rheological behaviour when subjected to shear and hydration. Experience at Hillendale has shown that the ultra fine mineral tailings are sensitive to shear history in terms of shear intensity and shear duration as well as hydration history. This phenomenon expresses itself right through the primary beneficiation process influencing the mineral separation, but is especially prevalent on the residue disposal i.e. slurry transport and deposition on the tailings impoundment. Tube viscometer test work was conducted on the flocculated fine tailings that indicated that there was a change in rheology as a result of shear. This paper presents the results of the on-site test work conducted at the mine to measure the rheology at various stages in the process.

This paper discusses the application of a computerised model based on genetic algorithms (GAs), called GenRel, for reliability assessment of underground mine hoisting systems. The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether GenRel can be applied to predict future failure data of a mine hoisting system based on historical records of failures. The incentive of selecting the GAs for prediction of failures is that GAs are a class of evolutionary algorithms which imitate the biological evolution procedures such as reproduction, selection, crossover and mutation. The reliability of mining equipment changes over time due to an array of factors (eg equipment age, the operating environment, number and quality of repair). These factors affect the equipment's failure patterns and have complex impacts on the equipment's reliability characteristics. The failure patterns are assumed to follow a biological evolution process, and thus GAs can be considered applicable in the modelling process.To conduct the reliability assessment, a study was carried out with historical failure data of hoists in the time period from January to December 2007. Two failure data sets of two mine hoisting systems were collected from two typical underground mines in Ontario, Canada, which are denoted as the NA mine and the SB mine. The failure data sets were prepared in the format of time between failures (TBF). Then, these data sets were entered in GenRel to generate predicted failure data sets for the period of January to March 2008. The paper discusses the statistical similarity of the actual failure data sets for the period of January to March 2008 with the predicted failure data set generated by GenRel in the same time period.

Manufacture of lime is one of the oldest industries. Plants are distributed widely and furnish an essential raw material for numerous commodities. Use of lime in hundreds of manufacturing and chemical processes, by the building trades, and in agriculture has created a demand for large production and has necessitated exhaustive research on methods of manufacture and uses. The bibliography of publications on lime is extensive; but, for the most part, each publication has dealt with individual operations. The purpose of this paper is to present a general picture of the industry as a whole. The abundant literature has been abstracted and quoted freely, and the National Lime Association has furnished valuable data for certain sections. Publications containing more-detailed information on the various branches of the industry are referred to in the footnotes and bibliography.

The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER ACT) established a Technical Study Panel (The Panel) to provide recommendations on the utilization of belt air and new technology that may be available for increasing the fire resistance properties of conveyor belt used in underground coal mines. The Panel Report recommended use of the Belt Evaluation Laboratory Test (BELT) as the method for testing and approval of flame resistant conveyor belts used in underground coal mines. The research conducted to establish the correlation of the BELT with large-scale belt fire flammability tests was done using 36- to 42-in wide conveyor belt. Due to today?s coal haulage capacity, the mining industry is using 72-in and wider conveyor belts. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study to determine if the BELT will also qualify wider belts as fire resistant for use in underground coal mines. This paper describes the results of recent experiments comparing results from using the BELT and the large-scale tests for six different belts.

The particle dynamics of a mixture of coal and zircon system wasstudied in a scaled-down cold model of an industrial kiln. Thefactors investigated in the study were rotational speed (N),zircon-to-coal feed ratio (B), coal particle size (dpc) and the angle of inclination (*) of the kiln. The technique used is the residence time distribution (RTD) method. It was found that rotational speed and angle of inclination are important parameters that affect the residence time of particles in the kiln. A mathematical model for predicting the mean residence time of particles in the rotary kiln was developed. Comparisons with reported models for such systems are discussed.

The purpose of the present work is to demonstrate the removal of manganese from a neutral leach zinc-rich solution ([Zn] =150 g/L) at 80°C by oxidative precipitation using a gas mixture of sulphur dioxide (SO2) and oxygen (O2). In order to determine the optimum conditions for manganese removal, several bench-scale semi-batch experiments were performed, where the effects of ORP and gas mixing were investigated. These tests showed that SO2/O2 is a fast and effective oxidant for removing manganese down to ppm level as long as the appropriate ORP is attained/maintained and gas transfer kinetics are optimized.

This volume constitutes the final report for the Rescue Subsystem portion of the Coal Mine Rescue and Survival System program conducted by the Westinghouse Electric Corporation under contract to the United States Bureau of Mines (Contract Number H0101262 dated Jung 17, 1970). The program was directed by the Special Systems Department of the Westinghouse, Baltimore, Maryland facility. The basic objectives of the CMRSS program were to develop and test hardware to determine the efficacy of a variety of coal mine rescue and survival concepts and techniques. These concepts were drawn from two major- sources: the Request for Proposal from the Bureau of Mines and the final report on the Mine Rescue and Survival Study conducted by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE).

In the overall open pit mine planning process, mining phase design is a strategic driver in guiding and constructing the block extraction sequence and determining the annual net cash flow distribution. Mining phase design should obey some practical constraints, such as ?minimum mining width? and ?flat mining phase bottom?, to allow space for haul road development and truck and shovel access on each bench. However, these practical mining phase design requirements are not taken into account in all first-cut mining phase design methods and post-processing is always required to convert an impractical design to a practical one, resulting in a potentially significant loss of Net Present Value (NPV) relative to the first-cut impractical designs. In this paper, we present a method using a meta-heuristic algorithm ? Simulated Annealing ? to enforce those practical constraints in determining a mineable phase design whilst ensuring minimum NPV loss.

O mercado do aço no mundo está muito competitivo, e as indústrias siderúrgicas têm desenvolvidos projetos com foco na melhoria da qualidade dos aços e na redução dos custos dos processos de fabricação. Este trabalho descreve os avanços nos processos de lingotamento contínuo, com foco na redução do sucatamento de placas por “bolsa”. Esta melhoria consistiu na modificação na taxa de refrigeração aplicada na placa de cauda durante o processo de descarga da máquina (final de lingotamento). A implementação dessa ação propiciou uma homogeneidade na solidificação das placas de cauda aumentando assim sua temperatura de extração reduzindo significativamente o sucatamento das mesmas. Outras melhorias obtidas com o trabalho foram a redução das ocorrências de placa parada no interior da máquina, redução das ocorrências de restrição de velocidade por Baumann, redução das ocorrências de intervenção para regularização de GAP e melhoria na qualidade superficial. O trabalho foi realizado sem investimento contribuindo na redução do custo de transformação do aço em placa.

King County (Seattle, WA) is on a monumental task of building the new Brightwater System complete with a new treatment plant, three main conveyance tunnels, a new outfall into Puget Sound and other ancillary works. This paper will describe the first conveyance tunnel, Brightwater East currently under construction by the Joint Venture of Kenny (Sponsor) / Shea / Traylor that is scheduled for completion in early 2010. The project located in Bothell, WA (north of Seattle) is in both King and Snohomish Counties. It was the first of the major tunnel projects that was scheduled by King County for the Brightwater System. The East Contract consists of the following major elements: 14,000 ft of 19'-2' EPBTBM mined tunnel using 16'-8' ID bolted, gasketed precast concrete segments for a primary liner; installing and encasing 14,200 ft each of 48', 66', 27', 84' in diameter steel pipes inside the tunnel along with three runs of fiberoptic cable; 2,430 ft of 72' in diameter microtunnel including three caisson shafts and associated structures; one Intercepting Structure (IS) shell to mine from that is 74 ft deep and 74 ft finished in diameter with 130 ft deep slurry diaphragm walls, tremie slab and final concrete wall lining; one Influent Pump Station shell (IPS) 83 ft deep, twin 77 ft inside diameter cells, with 160 ft deep slurry diaphragm walls, tremie slab, and final lining; two short 12 ft in diameter inter-shaft connector tunnels; one extraction shaft 40 ft deep by 40 ft wide and 140 ft long for connection to the new treatment plant piping.
