The Phoenix mine on the Mararoa Reef at Norseman, Western Australia, provides an outstanding: AUstralian instance of the recurrence of payable ore beneath the bottom of an abandoned mine, and an interesting and instructive example of the development ofideas with regard to ore recurrence in a particular district. The Mararoa Reef is the most productive of several hypothermal goldquartz vains in pre-Cambrian basic volc81olics which strike northsouth and dip on the average, 45 degrees east. The Phoenix minewas abandoned at 500 ft. vertical depth after producing 342,000 tons of 9.9 dwt. recovery grade (equivalent to nearly half of the total production of the Norseman field) from a 2,500 ft.. long, horizontally disposed oreshoot, which is reported to have had an ore outcrop only 30 ft. in length.Interest in the field was revived in 1933, and by 1941 new ore mined and developed on the Mararoa Reef by Central Norseman Gold Corporation N.L. amounted to approximately 700,000 tons of 6.7 dwt. recovery grade. In the same period another oreshoot of similar size and grade was developed by Norseman Gold Mines N.L., south of the old Mararoa company's site. As shown by the plans, the ore occurs in discontinuous shoots. The intervening area of shear is poor in quartz as well as in gold. Geological work on behalf of Western Mining Corporation Ltd., and Central Norseman Gold Corporation N.L. has been in progress in the mine and in the field more or less continuously from 1913 to 1941 and again since 1946. This paper describes the successive advances in the understanding of the exploratory problem up to late 1941, to which several investigators have contributed. McKinstryl visited the mine and recognised that the ore occurred primarily on the flatly dipping sections of the vein, as distinct from the steeply dippingsections, in a wide shear zone with reverse movement. Many of the flatly dipping fractures were seen to exhibit tension phenomena and to link one shear plane to the next below on the footwall side. La largeur de l?armature peut être modifiée selon les besoins du client entre 48 " et 64" de largeur totale, donc 2 sections de 24" à 32". Ceci permet à l?opérateur d?effectuer le démantèlement de l?équipement pour le déplacement dans les endroits restreints. Le déménagement d?un niveau à un sous-niveau devrait se faire dans un quart de travail de 8 heures. L?option de largeur permet au client de choisir un équipement adapté à son environnement de travail (1). La largeur de la table de forage peut être modifiée selon les besoins du client entre 48" et 96". Cette particularité permet une meilleure stabilité, et plus de précision dans le forage (2). Il y a 4 pattes hydrauliques à chaque coin pour la stabilisation lors de forage (3). La table de forage a 360° d?angle de forage sur 3 côtés du transporteur. La table peut sortir de chaque côté du transporteur de 40 ½" à partir du centre du transporteur pour faciliter la mise en place de la foreuse dans les endroits difficiles d?accès. La plage de forage est considérablement agrandie. Cette caractéristique qui fonctionne hydraulique, permet à l?opérateur de forer sans être obligé de changer la position du transporteur pour des changements de trous. Tous les types de foreuse peuvent être installés sur cette table de forage (4). Sa petite dimension lui permet d?accéder, par des monteries de 30" de diamètre, à des sites de travail de 2,5 mètres de hauteur et largeur. C?est un équipement adapté aux gisements filoniens. Ce genre de gisement est de moins en moins rentable pour les compagnies minières. La mécanisation des ces gisements va permettre de les rentabilisés en augmentant la productivité et la santé du travailleur, en réduisant la dilution (5). Les manettes de contrôle de la foreuse, les mouvements de la table de forage ainsi que le déplacement du transporteur ont été installés selon les recommandations d?un ergonome. Des recherches ont été effectuées par ce spécialiste sur les cas d?accident survenus avec l?utilisation de ce genre d?équipement. Il a déterminé les positions le plus confortable que l?opérateur doit prendre pour éviter les douleurs prolongées (6). Le système de roulement est composé de 4 roues pleines installées sur 4 planétaires de 9000 à 15000 livres de capacité munis chacun d?un moteur hydraulique. Des freins ont été installés sur les planétaires pour assurer la sécurité de l?opérateur et faciliter le positionnement du transporteur lors du forage. Des roues rétractables peuvent être installées pour faciliter l?accès sur rail (7). Ce transporteur peut être alimenté par une puissance électrique plutôt que par une puissance pneumatique. Cette puissance électrique est fournie par un Power Pack qui transforme l?énergie en puissance hydraulique. Ce type d?alimentation est employé lors du forage de développement, mais il peut aussi être utilisé pour le forage long trou. Cet avantage permet au client qui a un problème de pression d?air d?utiliser l?électricité. Par contre si vous utilisez l?électricité mais que dans un secteur isolé le gros courant électrique n?est pas accessible vous pouvez utiliser votre équipement en utilisant la puissance pneumatique. Le changement d?alimentation énergétique se fait facilement (8). Cet équipement est construit pour effectuer 4 types d?activités : forage de développement de niveau et sousniveau avec l?installation d?un bras porteur, forage et pose de câbles d?encrage pour soutènement de terrain, forage de production long trou et forage de monterie ascendante et descendante. L?avantage est que vous investissez dans un seul équipement au lieu de 2 ou 3. Cet avantage vous fait économiser dans votre budget d?équipement. En plus cet équipement est construit pour de dure travaux et ne contient aucun système électronique (9).

Stoppings are required to resist lateral forces on the face of the structure to control pressure differentials created by ventilating air. The design criteria in other parts of the world, including Australia, exceed this requirement by specifying over pressurization control to as much as 14 kPa (2 psi) in the active sections and 35 kPa (5 psi) in the main ventilating control areas. This is done to provide protection to the mine workers from explosive or air blast events within the mine that can create this over pressurization. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting research to develop a new testing protocol for rating mine ventilation stoppings. The premise of this work is that arch-loading conditions more accurately reflects the transverse load capabilities of stoppings in underground coal mines than the freestanding flexural strength test specified in the current Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). This work clearly shows that the transverse load capabilities of dry-stacked, mine ventilation stoppings are dependent upon the material strength of the block and the height and thickness of the wall, none of which are part of the current CFR criteria based on ASTM E-72 specifications. This paper compares the transverse load capabilities of several block materials and wall dimensions commonly used in stopping constructions based upon simulated three-hinge, rigid-arch loading tests of half-wall constructions in the NIOSH Mine Roof Simulator. The results indicate a wide-range of transverse load capacities, ranging from as low as 21 kPa (0.3 psi) to as much as 117 kPa (17 psi) for the conditions evaluated in this study. The current CFR criteria do not distinguish between applications of these stopping designs despite their wide variance in transverse load capabilities, which is not conducive to employing ventilation control strategies that isolate certain sections of the mine to prevent injury to mine workers.

1977 was the modern day low point for productivity in the coal industry. At that time, no one could have predicted that the industry was about to enter a productivity rise that would continue unabated through the 1980s. Thirteen years later, the cause of this phenomenon is still not well understood. While many government studies focused on the fall in productivity from 1969 to 1977, none have been undertaken to explain the rise. Some of the likely causes of the gain in productivity during this period will be discussed here. An attempt will also be made to quantify the value of some of the technical innovations that have taken place. The remainder of the gain is assumed to come from non-technical sources. The nature of these sources, although largely non-quantifiable, is also discussed. Since the number of mines that have adopted the technical innovations noted here is largely unknown, the actual contribu¬tion of technological changes to the overall productivity gain can only be estimated.

"An estimated 600,000 tons of bentonite clay are used annually in the U. S. as binder for production of iron ore concentrate pellets. Since this is a significant cost item for the plants, and the addition of bentonite to the pellets contributes undesirable silica into the finished pellets, there is considerable incentive for finding methods to reduce bentonite use. One way to reduce bentonite levels is to selectively use those bentonites that are most effective in this application, so that a lower dosage will still produce a sufficiently strong pellet. Unfortunately, there are no satisfactory methods available for accurately predicting which bentonites are actually most effective, short of using them to actually make pellets. One of the popular methods for attempting to evaluate bentonites is the “Plate Water Absorption” (PWA) test. While some plant operators accept the PWA results as indicating the relative quality of bentonites, others disagree and claim that, over a fairly broad range of values, PWA does not correlate with bentonite performance.Since both Ca+2 and Mg+2 ions are known to reduce the swelling and water absorption capacity of bentonite, it was believed that the presence of these ions in plant recycle water could be changing the bentonite performance. Since the standard PWA test uses only distilled water for its measurements, it could not detect these effects. Experiments were therefore carried out on a number of different bentonites using a modified PWA tests, with plant recycle water replacing the distilled water. These experiments showed little effect of the plant water on the PWA value, and chemical analysis of the water showed that the levels of dissolved salts were quite low.Water and accompanying salts were then extracted from a magnetite concentrate filter cake by rinsing with distilled water. Analysis of this water showed an extremely high level of dissolved salts, particularly salts of calcium and magnesium. When concentrations were compared with the recycle water from the plant filters, it was determined that levels of Ca+2 and Mg+2 retained in the filter cake were over 500 times higher than levels in the recycle water. This extreme elevation of soluble salts in the filter cake is believed to be due to adsorption of these ions into the electrical double layer of the magnetite particles."

"This presentation will cover some crushing and grinding considerations in plant design and operation. There is nothing basically new in the subject matter presented here; however, the viewpoint and interpretation may be novel and some of it controversial.The presentation is based on experience gained in the metallurgical design of plants for Placer Development Limited from 1960 to the present. The plants are listed on SLIDE No. 1.These plants have conventional crushing, followed by rod mill and ball mill grinding. I would like to think that autogenous grinding plants are the answer for eliminating secondary crushing plants and reducing the capital and operating costs; however, the autogenous plants seem to have some problems of their own and I have had no experience with them.Fineness of Grinding RequiredFirst let us consider the fineness of grinding required.The fineness of grind will affect the recovery obtained, and the relationship must be determined. If the grinding is too coarse, some of the valuable mineral, either free or locked in middling grains, will not be floated. However, as grinding is probably the greatest single operating cost, we do not want to grind any finer than is justified economically.Finer grinding should not be carried beyond the point where the net smelter return for the increment saved becomes less than the added operating cost. Even this fineness will be beyond the economic limit because of the additional capital cost for the equipment needed to achieve it. These factors will be discussed in more detail later.The Bond work index is the commonest method of expressing a measure of the effort that has to be expended in grinding. It is the kilowatt-hours required to reduce a ton of rock from an infinite size to 80% passing 100 microns. The formula allows a calculation to be made for other size ranges."

A number of biodynamic models of the hand-arm system have evolved on the basis of measured driving-point mechanical impedance (DPMI) responses to facilitate analyses of the coupled hand-tool system [1]. The parameter identifications in such models are based upon minimization of an error function of the model and the target impedance data, which may not yield a unique solution. Consequently, a number of model structures and parameter sets could be realized that would equally satisfy the target curve. Moreover, the vast majority of the reported models exhibit acute deficiencies due to excessive static deflections of model masses, presence of a low frequency mode and very light masses in the order of 1.2- 4.8 grams. The models also do not characterize the dependency of the biodynamic responses on many factors, namely the hand forces, hand-arm posture and vibration intensity. This study aims at development of a hand-arm biodynamic model with considerations of the hand forces, and both the DPMI and power absorption measures, to enhance the uniqueness of the model. Methods Two different model structures are chosen for identifying the model parameters on the basis of measured DPMI and absorbed power characteristics of the hand-arm system under zh-axis vibration over a range of hand-grip and push forces. Owing to the strong influence of the hand-handle coupling forces, the models were initially derived for fixed hand forces, namely 30 N grip and 50 N push forces, as suggested in the ISO 10068 standard [2]. The equations of motion for the model are formulated and solved to compute both the DPMI and absorbed power responses. A constrained minimization function comprising weighted errors of both the DPMI and absorbed power is formulated and solved to identify the parameters. Alternate functions corresponding to different combinations of hand forces are then applied to identify hand-force dependent model parameters. Variations in the model parameters are investigated as functions of the grip, push and coupling forces through linear regression analysis. Regression-based models are formulated for deriving the hand-handle forces dependent model parameters. The validity of the model is also examined under selected combinations of hand forces. [ ]

Development of a vertically integrated light metals industry in Australia needs to be pursued with vigour, as does the continued development of global strategic alliances through the value adding chain.

I am wearing two hats today. When the invitations went out to participate in this forum, two were received in the head office of the Department of Lands and Survey - one addressed to the Director-General of Lands and one to the Chairman of the National Parks Authority. It seemed logical that as the department is responsible to the Government for the administration of the National Parks Act 1952, we should respond by providing one speaker to cover both the department's interests and those of the National Parks Authority. I hope, however, that this will not blur the clear distinction which exists in the context of the mineral industry between Crown land on the one hand administered by the department for the statutory Land Settlement Board and national parks and allied reserves on the other hand which are the responsibility of the National Parks Authority.

En ese sentido, el presente texto señala el potencial geo-económico de las rocas y minerales industriales que existe y explota en estas regiones y así estimular su inversión en actividades mineras e industriales, relacionadas con el aprovechamiento de los recursos de rocas y minerales industriales (RMI), orientándose a disminuir las importaciones y aumentar las exportaciones capaces de generar divisas.

The application of biogeochemical methods in mineral exploration in semi-arid to arid environments in Western Australia has been investigated in an area near Norseman.The study involved a comparison of trace element characteristics of rock, soil and plants in the vicinity of the Pioneer BB prospect, where nickel-iron sulphide mineralization occurs in a "greenstone" sequence of ultrabasic, basic and sedimentary rocks.Analyses of unweathered and partly weathered rock from diamond drill cores show the ultrabasic rock to be highly variable with respect to Ni, Cu, Co, Zn and Mn.Samples of weathered bedrock and overlying soil were analysed for total trace element contents and for the trace elements associated with secondary iron and manganese oxides. Approximately 30 per cent of the total nickel content of the weathered basic rock is associated with secondary iron and manganese oxides, compared with approximately 15 per cent in the weathered ultrabasic rock.The soil has a sufficient residual content to provide a reliable indication of the chemistry of the underlying rock. Total trace element analyses of the -89 mesh fraction show strong anomalies for nickel and copper over the mineralized zone. Important amounts of nickel, cobalt and, to a lesser extent, copper are apparently associated with secondary iron and manganese oxides in the soil.Melaleuca sheathiana (tea tree) has been used to study the relationship between soil and plant chemistry. No strong relationship between plant and rock type was observed. Analyses were made of leaves, twigs, wood, bark and roots, and all plant organs were found to have anomalous nickel and copper contents near the mineralized zone. Leaves were found to give the best contrast in the anomalous area and to show fewer erratic values than other organs. It is concluded that the uptake of trace elements by tea tree is low in the semi-arid to arid environment of Western Australia, but that analyses of the plants do reflect the presence of mineralization.

"Abstract Vibration limits for buildings with respect to ground vibrations from pile driving published in international standards are reviewed. At first, relevant vibration parameters are defined and the evaluation of vibration records is described. The sensitivity of structures to different vibration parameters (displacement, velocity and acceleration) is discussed. Most vibration standards relate to blasting activities, the dynamic characteristics of which can be significantly different to those from construction activities and in particular, pile driving. Several vibration standards are reviewed. The Swedish vibration standard is described in detail, as it is the only one accounting for several important factors, such as ground conditions, building material, and type of building foundation. Many standards limit the guidance to values based on the dominant vibration frequency and a wide scatter of frequency-dependent vibration limits exists. It is difficult to compare limiting values of ground vibrations proposed in different standards.1. INTRODUCTIONFor poor ground conditions, placing structures on piles is the most common foundation solution, while sheet piles are widely used to support deep excavations. Piles and sheet piles must often be installed in the close vicinity to buildings, structures or installations in the ground, which can be affected by ground movements and vibrations, (Massarsch and Fellenius, 2014). In many areas, environmental concerns with respect to noise and ground vibrations can restrict or even prohibit driving of piles or sheet piles or reduce the efficiency of installation. The design engineer must prescribe – often at an early stage of a project — the permissible levels of ground vibrations in order to minimize the potential risk of building damage. When seeking guidance from the literature, little or practically no applicable information can be found on how to assess permissible levels of ground vibrations."

Reduce respirable dust exposure of workmen operating auger-type continuous mining machines. Approach: An auger miner was fitted with an exhaust system which draws dust laden air through a [scruber] and discharges it behind the line curtain. How It Works: Dusty air is drawn into the space above the coal conveyor and through a scrubber, by two fans mounted side by side above the conveyor. Exhaust from the fans passes through a duct to the side of the auger miner, and into tubing that runs back and into the air return passage formed by the line curtain. See Figure 1. Of the 5,000 cubic feet per minute of air normally entering the working place, 4/5 is drawn out through the dust exhaust system. Rehabilitation of mining sites helps to achieve the purpose 5(2c) of The Resource Management Act 1991 û æavoiding, remedying, or mitigating any adverse effects of activities on the environmentÆ. The environmental outcomes for recent and current mining operations on the West Coast are variable. There are some exemplary mining operations which are restoring or even improving land use and environmental factors in the region, particularly those operated by the larger mining companies. There are also examples of an exploitative mentality where the environment and land have been severely degraded by mining activities. Technology has been developed to prevent a repetition of the historical destruction of the environment through mining. Failure to rehabilitate mined land is no longer acceptable to the New Zealand public in the 1990s and damages the credibility of the mining industry. Examples of successful mine site rehabilitation to pastoral farming and to production or plantation forestry are illustrated from the alluvial gold mining industry. Planning, sequencing of operations, the utilization of sailor plant growth materials, and aftercare are key factors in successful land rehabilitation to these productive uses. There is also a recent focus on restoring indigenous forests and wetlands at both coal and gold mining sites, particularly for mines on or adjacent to the conservation estate. The results of scientific research and efforts by the industry on techniques for rehabilitating rainforest and pakihi wetland after mining are presented, particularly from the Giles Creek Dunoille Coal Mine. There is a need for further research and trials to apply and extend rehabilitation techniques to other geological and environmental situations, particularly to mines in mountainous areas and to difficult environments like the coal measures ecosystems of the plateaux above Westport.

Devido à obstrução no distribuidor, os aços ultra baixo carbono estabilizados ao titânio apresentavam baixo sequencial de lingotamento na ArcelorMittal Tubarão (AMT). Foram identificadas práticas utilizadas na redução de obstrução nestes aços, que foram adotadas para a produção na AMT. Uma das práticas foi estabelecer uma relação entre alumínio e titânio com menor propensão à formação de compostos de alumina e óxido de titânio que se aglomeram na região da válvula superior do distribuidor. Também foram introduzidas melhorias no processo visando a melhorar a condição de fluxo na região próxima da saída do aço no distribuidor. Neste projeto, um aço UBC de maior volume de produção foi escolhido e novas práticas foram adotadas para sua produção. Amostras de aço foram retiradas de corridas produzidas nesta condição e foram enviadas para análise na ArcelorMittal Research USA. Os resultados mostraram melhorias nos índices de qualidade tanto em laminados a quente como em laminados a frio. Neste trabalho será apresentado um resumo das ações adotadas na AMT, que resultaram em um aumento do sequencial médio de distribuidor, permitindo atingir um máximo de 18 corridas. Os níveis de esfoliação com esta nova prática atingiram também nível mínimo histórico.

Severe drought in the Colorado River Basin over the past 10 years has caused water levels to drop in Lake Mead by more than 113 feet. The current lake level is at elevation 1,112 feet mean sea level (msl). Lake Mead is the primary source of water supply for greater Las Vegas. Water for Las Vegas from Lake Mead is accessed through two existing submerged intake shaft and tunnel systems. If the water levels continue to drop in the lake, the Intake No. 1 will become inoperable below water level elevation of 1,050 feet msl. To sustain the current levels of water delivery to all member agen-cies in the southern Nevada region, the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) has decided to construct a third intake at a deeper depth in the lake to ensure better quality water and enhanced reliability.

The Sullivan Concentrator treats a complex sulphide ore consisting mainly of galena, marmatite and pyrrhotite. The ore carried minor values in silver, antimony, bismuth, indium and tin. The products of the concentrator are lead, zinc, iron and tin concentrates. The minor metal values other than tin are recovered from the concentrates by the refining processes in the smelter at Trail.The concentrator was completed in 1923 and first operated with a capacity of 2,500 tons per day. In the years 1926 to 1929 changes to equipment and buildings brought the operation up to 5,500 tons per day and then, in the years 1935 to 1945, the daily tonnage was raised to 8,500 tons. After 1945, the rising insoluble content of the ore made it necessary to consider the construction of a Sink-Float plant. At this time consideration was also given to the construction of a new crushing plant underground to replace the rolls crushers and cone crushers located at the concentrator. By 1949, construction of the Sink-Float plant was completed along with a new underground crushing plant, and an electric haulage way between the underground crushing chamber and the Sink-Float plant. The ore was hauled in forty 14-ton car trains which discharged into a 3,000 ton receiving bin by means of an air operated five car rotary dumper. With the start up of the,Sink-Float plant, a 1 ½ ft. by 12 ft. Hardinge rod mill was also brought into operation. The Sink-Float plant made it possible to treat 12,000 tons/day of mine run ore with up to 40% of this being rejected as float.
