Two house trailers and a modem modular house, all pillar-supported with cantilevered perimeters, were monitored for structural response to vibrations from surface coal mine blasts. Due to the large blast site distances, peak particle velocities measured in the ground beside the houses did not exceed 0.32 ips, and airblasts did not exceed 106 dB. However, the structures responded significantly to the ground vibrations, with maximum high-comer amplification factors as high as 8.5 in the horizontal directions. Vertical structural responses were as high as 10 times the vertical peak particle velocities in the ground, but appeared to be driven more by horizontal ground motions. No measurable airblast responses were observed. The natural frequencies of the structures ranged from 5 to 10 Hz.

Como una alternativa a la organización existente en geología, se propone un sistema jerárquico de tres niveles, donde la escala juega un papel clave y la enseñanza, es un proceso orientador antes que descriptivo. La principal ventaja de este esquema sobre el tradicional es que la relación entre segmentos de materia en cualquier nivel es conducido por profesores en el siguiente nivel superior, sin que haya necesidad de colaboración detallada entre profesores dentro o entre niveles.

Final mine sealing of BMA’s Crinum North mine, near Emerald, Queensland was undertaken in December 2015. Due to the benign atmospheric environment at Crinum North, the Queensland Mines Rescue Service (QMRS) Górniczy Agregat Gasniczy (GAG) unit was utilised to reduce oxygen levels throughout the underground atmosphere as part of the final sealing process.The GAG was utilised by way of a vertical borehole from the surface to seam to successfully reduce oxygen levels throughout the underground mine workings. Application of the GAG unit enabled the underground mine to be classified as stable and inert within days of the GAG operation, and subsequently cease gas monitoring at Crinum North. The data and information obtained from this activity provides valuable information to the underground coal mining industry on successful application of the GAG in realistic situations.This paper discusses the strategy used for sealing, the assisted inertisation and the results obtained from the application of the GAG unit. It discusses both the overall results and gives a detailed review of the gas monitoring data obtained via the tube bundle and real-time system, both during and following the use of the GAG unit.Gas monitoring results obtained and the strategy used are critical to share with the industry to obtain a better understanding of how the GAG unit works, and how it can be applied for emergency preparedness, emergency response or planned inertisation.CITATION:Westthorp, E, 2017. Neste trabalho foi estudado o efeito da adição de argônio à atmosfera de nitretação sob plasma sobre a resistência à corrosão do aço inoxidável austenítico AISI 316L. As nitretações foram realizadas em reator a plasma pulsado, a 420°C, por 6 h, adicionando-se 0%, 5% e 10% de argônio à mistura gasosa. Os resultados mostraram que a adição de 5% de argônio promove um aumento na espessura da camada de austenita expandida em relação ao material nitretado sem argônio. Com o aumento da concentração de argônio de 5 para 10%, no entanto, verificou-se a formação de camadas de austenita expandida mais finas e de baixa resistência à corrosão devido à presença de nitreto de cromo em sua estrutura.

A large lab apparatus was designed using a scale-down methodology based on the design legacy of the current FLSmidth commercial forced air flotation machines. This new apparatus, along with a new test methodology, was used to evaluate new rapid prototype concepts. The apparatus was designed to monitor bubble size, power, pumping capacity, Jg, velocity profiles, froth character, and tip speed. The methodology developed follows a sequence that goes from hydrodynamic tests and solids suspension tests to a flotation kinetic test. This methodology has been demonstrated to be a good tool to determine the effect of machine design changes on flotation.

"This paper reviews the Falconbridge- SMRQ’s Raglan project in northern Quebec and the process that was used in developing its current long-term mine plan. Challenges were many and not only limited to the longevity of the project, numerous ore deposits (both underground and open pit), and a 40 km property strike length. As a result of its remote northern location, other factors such as progressive reclamation, leachable mine waste, water treatment, and waste management were also part of the plan. A combination of modern planning tools were used to formulate the plan including DataMine, Mine 2-4D, AutoMod Simulation, and an Excel-based financial spreadsheet to bring the total plan together. The focus of the paper is to show the complexity of modern mine planning and associated economic modelling of mine processes. IntroductionThe Raglan project is located 1660 km directly north of Quebec at the northern tip of the Quebec Peninsula in Nunavik. The main property is 40 km in length stretching from the Donaldson airport area at the eastern edge of the property to East Lake at the western edge. The Deception Bay port is 90 km north of the main complex/mill situated at Katinniq which lies approximately in the middle of the property (Fig. 1). The mine processes 1 000 000 tpy of ore from both open pit and underground sources. The mill is forecasted this year to produce more than 150 000 t of concentrate grading more than 18% nickel. All personnel and critical cargo are transported to the site via a company-leased 737 jet from Rouyn-Noranda where the main administration office is located. The majority of cargo is shipped to the site via Deception Bay from Quebec and on the return trip, nickel concentrate is shipped back. From Quebec, the nickel concentrate is sent by rail to the Falconbridge smelter in Sudbury and on the reverse rail haul, nickel matte from the smelter is sent to Norway via Quebec."

"New or improved mathematical models of mineral processing machines are published almost on a monthly basis. Often, these models can be calibrated from bench-scale test results and programmed using spreadsheet software to simulate different designs and operating conditions in open-circuit configuration. However, since mineral processing plants frequently operate comminution, separation and/or extraction machines in closed-circuit configurations, open-circuit simulations often have limited applicability.The simulation of closed-circuit configurations necessitates the programming of an iterative loop to bring the circuit to equilibrium. This can be done by using spreadsheet software but often requires advanced programming skills. As an alternative, LIMN® software, which simplifies the programming of closed-circuit configurations within spreadsheets can be used. This software was specifically designed to turn a Microsoft EXCEL® spreadsheet into a closed-circuit modeling and simulation platform with minimal programming.During the past few years, the Mineral Processing Group at the Noranda Technology Centre, has used this software for numerous projects which include the simulation of multi-stage cyclone circuits, closed-circuit regrinding and locked-cycle flotation tests. Using these projects as examples, the flexibility and the easy to use nature of the LIMN® software is demonstrated.INTRODUCTIONMineral processing engineers routinely have to make predictions regarding comminution and separation processes. Predicting the appropriate dimensions of equipment and the process response to changes in operating mode are probably the most common situations that they face. In all cases these predictions are expected to be rapid and accurate.Predictions made by engineers are frequently based on mathematical models. Many first principles, empirical, semi-empirical, steady state and dynamic models of mineral processes can be found in the literature. In fact, new or improved mineral processing models are continuously being proposed and in spite of this variety, process engineers often have to either develop their own or tailor existing models to suit their particular needs."

El presente trabajo presenta alternativas indirectas para la exploración de depósitos de pórfidos de cobre (DPC), en los dos arcos magmáticos desarrollados entre Arequipa y Tacna. Estos dos arcos están representados por la Formación Guaneros y los batolitos de Punta Coles e Ilo, con edades Jurásico a Cretáceo inferior, y El Grupo Toquepala con el Batolito de Yarabamba de edad Cretáceo a Paleoceno. El análisis tectónico, aeromagnético y geoquímico de estos dos arcos, evidencia posibles áreas favorables al emplazamiento de cuerpos ígneos que puedan haber originado yacimientos económicos. De forma que se busca reevaluar los conceptos geológicos en tectonomagmatismo para la exploración de pórfidos de cobre, así como el desarrollo de ideas conceptuales a nivel regional de los patrones magmáticos y estructurales especialmente entre Perú y Chile y contribuir la exploración de Porfidos de Cobre desde el punto de vista geoquímico y tectónico.

Some 800 analyses for Cu, Zn, Pb, Ag, Fe, S, CaO, MgO, C02, Si02 and Al203 were used to examine the elemental constitution of the Mount Isa ores, and, for comparison, those of the Northern Leases area.Lead: zinc relations show little order from sample to sample, but means of large zones (Le. individual orebodies) show a highly linear inverse relationship. Lead: silver ratios are fairly constant from sample to sample, and means show a highly linear direct relationship.Sulphide sulphur appears to be related to carbonate and alumina abundance, sulphur decreasing systematically with increase in the ratio CO2:AI203. In all graphs involving members of the group CO2-A203-S the lead-zinc and copper ores conform to the same simple trends, confirming that the two ore types and their host rocks are genetically closely related. The earlier deduction of a volcanic-sedimentary origin for the sulphides of the Black Star orebodies appears compatible with present findings.On the basis of such an origin, the pattern of sulphide occurrence and mineralogy in the Mount Isa district is possibly related to the configuration f the upper surface of the "Eastern Creek Volcanics", the facies patterns of the overlying sedimentary rocks, and to the oldest faults affecting the two.INTRODUCTIONStanton (1962) described and interpreted the chemical constitution of the Black Star No. 2 lead-zinc and the 650750 copper orebodies at Mount Isa. The investigation has now been extended to the other principal orebodies of the area.The earlier study showed that the host rocks of the two adjacent Black Star orebodies were constitutionally closely related, and suggested that this was probably due to their original formation in contiguous zones of sedimentation. On this basis the silica-dolomite of the copper ore appeared to represent the slightly more shoreward, "limey" member, probably a fairly massive algal calcareous sediment laid...

A leaching model for gold ore that takes into account the impact of cyanide and oxygen concentrations as well as gold surface exposure on leaching performance is developed. Cyanide consumption is estimated by an empirical model that is a function of ore particles size distribution as well as cyanide, copper and sulphur concentrations. The research reported here concerns a four year study of the rock mechanics aspects of two underground hardrock mine study stopes. The first study was conducted at Anaconda Minerals Company's Carr Fork Mine near Tooele, Utah. The second study was conducted at the Homestake Mining Company's Homestake Mine In Lead, South Dakota. Both case studies were cooperative efforts of mining company personnel, the Spokane Research Center of the Bureau of Mines and the Department of Mining Engineering, University of Utah. Large diameter (6 1/2 In.) blastholes were an integral part of the stoplng method at each mine. A true vertical crater retreat (VCR) method was used at the Homestake Mine, while a vertical bench mining method (VBM) was used at the Carr Fork Mine. VCR and VBM methods were developed In the 1970's; they offer significant productivity gain and are now used throughout the world. The new technology, however, brings with It a requirement for more sophisticated engineering design and control. Since there are no personnel in a VCR or VBM stope, all ground control Including dimensioning of stopes and pillars and the layout of cable bolt assays or other artificial support must be done in advance of production blasting. Accordingly, the objective of the research study was the establishment of a procedure for optimizing stops and pillar sizes. The approach taken was In each case a combination of mine measurements of the study stope response to mining, laboratory testing for rock properties and In situ stress measurements of the premining stress field, and theoretical calculations of the study stope response to mining. All calculations were done with the UTAH-II finite element computer program. Simulation of the blasting sequence gave a correlation of 0.88 between measured and calculated extensometer readings (Incremental relative displacements) at the Carr Fork Mine where other 30 Instrumentation boreholes were used to monitor the test stope response. A correlation of 0.84 was obtained at the Homestake Mine where 19 instrumented boreholes were used for monitoring purposes. These high correlations validated the computer mode and calibrated It for rock mass properties. The calibrated model was then used In parametric studies of alternative design layouts.

The smelting of lead ores has been carried out in southeast Missouri for centuries, and modern smelting practices have generated a variety of waste products. Lead blast furnace slag is one such product, which typically contains 10% zinc, 25% iron and 2% lead. This slag has often been stockpiled on the producing smelter site and accumulations have now reached several million tonnes. It is possible that in the near future these slags will be classified by the federal Environmental Protection Agency as hazardous, and therefore there is considerable interest in possible treatment processes to render the slags non-hazardous by removing the offending metallic elements. To ensure that the overall slag processing costs are kept to a minimum, it is imperative that lead and zinc be recovered in a form suitable for sale or further processing. There are two generic routes for processing blast furnace slags and they involve hydro-metallurgical or pyrometallurgical techniques. With hydrometallurgy, the slags would be leached directly and the metal values recovered from purified leach solution(s) by electrowinning. One problem with processes of this type is that the zinc and lead grades of the slags are low and the iron content is high, and thus the economics of metal production are often not favorable. For pyrometallurgical processing (1), it has been shown that the slags can be fumed to produce an oxide dust containing all the lead and zinc, and representing only a fraction of the weight of the initial slag. The oxide dust may then be processed hydrometallurgical to recover zinc and lead.

Remote methane detection State and federal regulations require frequent measurements to verify that safe methane levels are maintained in underground coal mines. Ventilation control is the primary means of maintaining safe methane levels. In the immediate face area, where the highest methane levels occur, methane measurements are required every 20 minutes during active mining. To perform these measurements, temporary roof supports must be erected. This allows a miner to reach the face. There a hand-held methanometer is used to make the measurements. This procedure is time consuming and potentially hazardous. To facilitate the measuring process and reduce the miner's exposure to roof falls, the US Bureau of Mines has developed a prototype optical device. It can measure methane remotely from distances up to 12 m (40 ft). The device uses two infrared signals, reflected from the coal face, rib, or roof. One signal is absorbed by the methane, the other is not. The ratio of the two signals determines the average methane concentration in the face area. The prototype detector has also been successfully tested at the Lake Lynn, PA Laboratory. Instantaneous responses were obtained for methane in the ventilation airflow and for methane layered near the roof. Conventional methanometers required from five to 25 seconds to respond to the methane in the ventilation airflow. They did not respond to methane in the roof layer. Ignition suppression system The incidence has increased of fractional spark ignition at the mine face. One reason is the advent of mechanical mining. Another is the more difficult ventilation conditions associated with deeper and more extensive underground workings. To cope with the problem of frictional ignition, the Bureau of Mines initiated research to develop a system that would provide rapid detection of incipient methane-air ignition. Then, rapid dispersion of a quenching agent would ensure that the methane flame was extinguished while it was still relatively small. This concept was successfully demonstrated by suppressing explosions in the Bureau's Bruceton, PA experimental mine. But the bulkiness of the early storage-dispersal system proved impractical to retrofit onto face equipment. In a cooperative effort by the Bureau and the Mine Safety and Health Administration, a more compact system has been developed and is being tested. O uso do nitrogênio como gás de injeção através de plug poroso no forno panela pode ser importante do ponto de vista econômico, no entanto pode provocar pick-up excessivo de nitrogênio caso seja realizado de forma inadequada. No presente trabalho, são apresentados os resultados de testes de injeção de nitrogênio e nitrogênio seguido de argônio em aços para produtos longos. Visando compreender os processos de absorção e sua cinética, um modelo cinético é formulado e ajustado aos dados experimentais. O modelo cinético clássico descreve bem os resultados experimentais e permite o uso para previsões do efeito da injeção de nitrogênio sobre o teor de nitrogênio no aço. Observa-se que a cinética de absorção é controlada pela agitação da panela e pela presença de elementos tenso-ativos, notadamente o oxigênio, como esperado, de acordo com os modelos clássicos do fenômeno. A técnica da injeção de nitrogênio seguida de argônio é bem-sucedida economicamente e o modelo permite a previsão e o controle da absorção de nitrogênio pelo aço.

O estudo do padrão de fluxo do aço no molde de lingotamento contínuo é de grande importância para a siderurgia, uma vez que permite compreender como as variáveis de processo afetam a qualidade do aço produzido. Existem diversas técnicas, numéricas ou experimentais, utilizadas para realizar esses estudos. Este trabalho apresenta um estudo de simulação numérica, que tem como objetivo avaliar a influência da fração de argônio injetada no sistema no padrão de fluxo do aço no molde de lingotamento de placas. As condições de processo simuladas foram obtidas de diversas máquinas de lingotamento, com diferentes vazões de aço e argônio injetado. Os resultados numéricos foram validados através de um método experimental denominado “Nail Board”. Após a realização do estudo, foram constatadas consideráveis alterações do padrão de fluxo devido à variação da fração volumétrica do argônio injetado no sistema.

This study traces the development of the bucket-wheel excavator, points out the differences in the German- and American-type wheels, and gives the major design criteria and the advantages and disadvantages of bucket-wheel operations. A computer program, written in FORTRAN IV for use with an IBM 360 computer, simulates the operation of the digging components of a bucket-wheel excavator. By supplying certain mining dimensions, soil characteristics, and machine design specifications, this program will print out a time study of the various components of an operation, power calculations for the operation, and production data. This program, when combined with a truck, belt, or rail program, should be helpful in planning a complete mining system In material suitable for a bucket-wheel excavator operation.

On the 26th of June 2000 a hydraulic fill retaining barricade failed at the Bronzewing mine in Western Australia. The barricade failure resulted in the release of 19,000 m3 of saturated hydraulic fill into the mine and caused the deaths of three miners. Following this tragic accident, the practices and procedures of mines using hydraulic fills came under intense scrutiny by regulatory bodies and mining companies. At this time, the use of hydraulic fill at Normandy?s zinc/copper Scuddles mine was suspended and waste rock became the sole backfill material in use underground. By 2003, development of the adjacent Gossan Hill mine had progressed to a point where a self supporting fill material was required to enable full recovery of high grade ore. Cemented hydraulic fill (CHF) was identified as the optimal fill type and work began on designing appropriate management procedures and controls to ensure the safe implementation. This work included definition of the fill properties, plant design and construction, reticulation system design, design of stope barricades and drainage systems and fill placement control and monitoring practices. CHF placement began on 16th July 2004 and has continued to date. Significant operational experience has since been gained in areas including plant performance, fill product quality assurance, barricade construction, stope drainage and in-situ performance.

In a modern blast furnace, production depends, to a large extent, on the rate at which the furnace gases can be forced through the charge. Since these gases must make their way through the voids between particles of coke, ore, and limestone, the size and size distribution of the stock-column materials are of considerable importance. Also, because the coke pieces support the weight of the overburden and provide the majority of the voids through which the gases pass, their ability to withstand the shattering and abrading forces to which they are subjected should be related to the maximum obtainable production for any particular furnace. Although the wide acceptance of this point of view is indicated by the ever-increasing demand for stronger and more uniform blast-furnace cokes, economic considerations demand that a quantitative evaluation of the relation between coke quality and blast-furnace performance be made available to the industry at the earliest possible date. The following studies of size-distribution patterns and breakage processes were, therefore, conducted as a part of a preliminary investigation intended as a basis for future studies of the relation between coke quality and blast-furnace performance. The major findings may be summarized as follows: 1. New evidence for the presence of two independent distributions of sizes in run-of-oven cokes has been obtained, and a method for characterizing and estimating the relative importance of the individual distributions has been demonstrated. This method has also been used to study the different types of degradation taking place during the tumbler test.

De acuerdo a su diversidad biológica, la pila de la lixiviación de La Quinua es única en su género, por lo que es importante la clasificación de los diferentes frentes de minado. Posteriormente, de acuerdo al avance de explotación fue cambiando las características del mineral, facilitando la descarga directo a la pila de lixiviación. Sin embargo, la presencia de finos, arcillas y la poca profundidad de remoción del mineral, perjudicó la extracción de oro, orginando un incremento de inventario de oro en la pila de lixiviación. En este sentido, el presente texto describe los contínuos cambios del mineral y sus características, originando un cambio en el método de lixiviación a través del cambio de los controles operacionales de altura de banco y flujo de riego, en respuesta de pruebas metalúrgicas que se desarrollaron con el tipo de mineral.
