IT seems a common opinion among metallographists that all light-gray inclusions seen with the microscope in polished sections of steel are manganese sulphide. Examples of this belief are continually appearing, as for instance in the paper by Dr. Henry Fay on manganese sulphide as a source of danger in steel rails,1 and in Lieutenant-Commander Cook's paper on Metallography of Steel for U S. Este trabalho teve por finalidade caracterizar e avaliar a evolução microestrutural de um aço carbono com adição de manganês utilizado para fabricação de um tubo através de um processo de soldagem por alta frequência e submetido a uma sequência de tratamento térmico. Foram coletadas amostras pertinentes à região de metal base e linha de solda para cada etapa de processamento, de modo a avaliar as fases e constituintes formados após a etapa de soldagem e pós tratamento térmico. De acordo com as micrografias apresentadas e gráficos dos perfis de dureza Vickers da região de solda referente a cada amostra, foi possível fazer uma avaliação completa no que diz respeito a caracterização microestrutural do material. A sequência de tratamento térmico adotada promoveu uma homogeneização da microestrutura no material como um todo (exceto na linha de solda), resultando em uma estrutura com evidencias de início de esferoidização após o revenido.

Preliminary results of an experiment in seismic holography indicate that the techniques of acoustical holography may be successfully used with seismic waves to determine the size and general shape of underground objects. This experiment was carried out under field conditions on a moderately large scale compared with the typical laboratory experiments in acoustical holography. The object to be mapped was a 100-foot-diameter, spherical, low-velocity zone of explosively fractured rock in oil shale at an average depth of 80 feet. The seismic wavelength of the Fourier component wave used in making the seismic holograms was 50 feet at a frequency of 140 cps. The hologram sampling aperture was 226 feet square and was sampled by 441 geophones in a 21 by 21 rectangular array. One novel aspect of the experiment was the use of a wide-band polychromatic explosive source of seismic waves rather than a narrow-band quasi-monochromatic vibrator source. A successful laser reconstruction of the object image from a lensless Fourier-transform hologram in the form of a 5/l6-inch-square photographic transparency is illustrated. The size of the underground object measured from the laser reconstruction of the object and the size inferred from a knowledge of the amount of explosives used to fracture the site and the tensile strength of the oil shale are found to agree.

Bench-scale test methods were developed by the Bureau of Mines for use by the Department of Transportation in the classification of solid and liquid oxidizers. A burning rate test is recommended for evaluating the fire hazard of solid inorganic oxidizers when mixed with a red oak sawdust as the reference combustible. A spontaneous ignition test is proposed for evaluating liquid and solid inorganic oxidizers which may decompose violently or ignite spontaneously when unmixed or mixed with the wood sawdust under unconfined conditions. Test results are compared for various representative oxidizers and a classification system is proposed for use in the government transportation regulations.

The sparking and gas-igniting tendency of steels and alloys were evaluated my measuring the radiance of spark showers produced by grinding a sample on an abrasive wheel in air, the time required for a spark shower generated on an abrasive wheel to produce an ignition in an explosive gas mixture, and the energy and speed required for impacts between various materials to ignite an explosive gas mixture. Mixtures of air-methane were found quite resistant to ignition by showers of sparks. A mixture of air-9.S pct hydrogen was used to increase the sensitivity of the tests and to thereby extend the range of materials that could be evaluated. The results of the spark-shower tests indicate that carbon steels and the alloy steels found in coal-cutter tools are among the most sparking and most incendive of any materials tested. Stainless steels, nickel alloys, and tungsten carbide are among the least sparking and least incendive. The brightness of the spark showers depended upon the degree of oxidation of the abraded particles. Impact tests against hard rocks such as solid quartz and sandstone, showed that high-carbon steel was more inc endive in the hydrogen mixture than were the softer steels or the alloy steels found in coal cutters. Ignitions were found much less likely to occur at speeds somewhat lower than the speeds currently in use in continuous mining machines.

An experimental hydraulic jetting device intended to operate in a 16-in-diam borehole was designed, fabricated, and used to cut coal and simulated coal samples. This device consisted of two 0.107-in-diam nozzles that rotated in a plane perpendicuIar to a 50-inch length of high-pressure tubing. Experi¬ments were also conducted with stationary jets issuing from a single 0.142-in-diam nozzle. Numerous experiments were performed using systematic variations of jet parameters coupled with assessments of cutting rates. These Bureau of Mines tests showed that when operated at 4,000 psi pressure and a 40-gpm flow rate (1) the device can fragment coal up to a distance of 8 feet from the nozzle, (2) 4,000-psi jets cut more effectively than lower pressure jets with the same nozzle diameter, (3) stationary jets do not cut as effectively as moving jets, (4) interkerf breaking occurs when the kerf spacing is less than 2 inches, and (5) if the kerfs are spaced <1/2 inch, the jet is deflected and thereby reduces cutting effectiveness.

According to the U.S Department of Energy (DOE), mineral processing activities including comminution (size reduction) uses 4% of the world electrical energy consumption. Such numbers reinforce the need to invest in energy savings initiatives in order to produce more using less. ENERGY EFFICIENCY OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES IN MINING OPERATIONS In addition, DOE, in its Mining Industry Energy Bandwidth Study, has identified huge potential for energy savings for the coal, metals and mineral industries. Even knowing the overall causes of energy waste and some potential tools for remediation, mining companies may struggle to apply such tools and get the desired results due to the following reasons: ? Limited staff ? Lack of accurate economic and investment analysis to justify energy savings projects ? Lack of knowledge to identify low or no-cost savings opportunities ? Internal competition for resources According to the workforce and talent management experts, the Talent Strategy Advisors, the demand for mining engineers is expected to exceed supply by 30% by 2013. Mining personnel are likely to be burdened with increasing and varied workloads with limited training. This will result in the need for automated and simple tools to support energy efficiency activities. Mining engineers will simply not have the time and resources to create such tools, collect and analyze the data to make decisions, and track results.

The Bureau of Mines is currently conducting a four year mineral assessment of the 5.7 million acre Valdez Creek Mining District in Southcentral Alaska, as part of its ongoing statewide mining district evaluation program. This report is a summary of the 1987 field work, which included the examination of mines, prospects, and mineral occurrences in the study area. Placer gold has been the most important metal produced in the area, and production totaled 161,131 oz, with the majority of the production coming from the Valdez Creek Mine. Lode gold and silver production totaled 1,581 oz and 8,617 oz, respectively and came mainly from the Golden Zone Mine. Varying amounts of other metals, including copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, antimony, chrome, nickel, cobalt, tin, tungsten and platinum exist in the study area. Occurrences of industrial limestone and coal are also located in the area.

Central Alaska contains a wide variety of pre-, syn-, and post -accretionary mineral deposits that are related to the growth and evolution of the north-west North American continental margin. Withinpre-accretionary terranes, the Devonian-Carboniferous, carbonate platform-hosted MVT zinc-lead deposits of the Kandik and Reef Ridge districts in central Alaska, and the Devonian-Mississippian volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) polymetallic deposits of the Bonnifield, and Delta mineral belts of eastern Interior Alaska have received the most exploration interest to date. Syn-accretionary rift related, mafic and ultramafic sill swarms and zoned plutons of the Kluane-Nikolai igneous belt are currently being explored for Ni-Cu-Co-PGE deposits. Syn-accretionary granitoid complexes in the PurcellMountains, Illinois Creek, and Sitylemenkat areas have been explored for uranium-REE-gold, and tin-silver mineralization respectivelyPost-accretionary granitoid intrusions and associated volcanic fields that range in age from mid-Cretaceous to early Tertiary contain significant gold-silver-polymetallic resources in the East Central Alaska, Hogatza, and Kuskokwim Mineral belts. Collectively the three main post-accretionary plutonic/volcanic belts of central Alaska are part of the Tintina Gold Province, where exploration since 1990has identified about 848 tonnes gold.

Feldspar is no example of special mineralization in isolated spots: it can usually be found within a mile or so of almost anywhere. Along with silica sand, it is a major part of our world&apos;s total mineral composition. This fact imparts to it an economic status different from a sulfide ore, or potash, or phosphate. While every feldspathic "stringer" does not possess economic potential, the generous distribution does yield a high statistical frequency of good feldspar ore bodies: the adjective "good" being subject to some flexibility of interpretation. The strong chemical bonds of this alkali aluminum silicate give it certain use advantages, but under present technology its individual elements cannot practically be separated to create aluminum, potassium, sodium, silicon - or their oxides. Its present uses rely upon chemical inertness - as in fillers; and on its physical melting characteristics and their effect in glass, enamel, or ceramics.

This Bureau of Mines report reviews the recent developments in the heap leaching of gold ores with dilute cyanide solutions and the recovery of gold and associated silver from the pregnant effluents by a carbon adsorption-desorption method. Mineralogical considerations, experimental work, field studies, and commercial operations are described. Also presented are recent process advances developed by the Bureau, including the application of (1) alcohol additives to the conventional hot alkaline cyanide strip solution to enhance gold desorption from precious metal-laden activated carbon, and (2) Na2S precipitation of the silver from geld-silver cyanide solutions as a means of reducing the inventory of carbon required for precious-metal adsorption from heap leach effluents and for the production of low-silver bullion from activated carbon stripping solutions.

INTRODUCTION. THE predominating value of the ores now being treated by the Palmarejo and Mexican Gold Fields, Ltd., is silver, although some gold is also carried. The present method of treatment consists of wet-crushing and concentrating, followed by the cyanidation of the unroasted sands and slimes. The sands are treated by leaching and the so-called accumulated slimes by a system of agitation and decantation. It is only within very recent years that the cyanidation of unroasted silver-ores has been commercially successful. In fact, at the time operations were begun at the cyanide-plant at Chinipas, February, 1902, I knew of no other leaching-plant treating similar ores successfully. The cyanide treatment of the Palmarejo ores differs but little from the ordinary practice in cyaniding gold-ores; and perhaps but little, if any, new information concerning the metallurgy of silver is to be gleaned from it. PALMAREJO MINE. The Palmarejo mines are located in the southwestern part of the State of Chihuahua, Mexico, on the foothills of the Sierra Madre mountains, at an elevation of 3,200 feet. The mills, 12. miles distant, are situated on the Chinipas river, near the town of Chinipas, which is about 150 miles northeast of Agiabampo, on the Gulf of California. Supplies are shipped via this port as this route is the best and most direct to the property. The ore-bodies in the Palmarejo mines have been deposited. along a series of rock-fractures, caused by an intrusion of eruptive rock. O presente trabalho apresenta os resultados de têmpera a partir da temperatura de transformação da austenita para ferrita em um aço microligado seguido de revenido de 200 a 550°C. Foram avaliadas as fases presentes no equilíbrio termodinâmico em função da temperatura de formação para verificar quais fases foram solubilizadas nas condições de tratamento térmico. Após os tratamentos de têmpera e revenido, foram realizadas caracterizações microestruturais e de microdureza. Os resultados indicaram presença de ferrita poligonal em conjunto com constituintes displacivos como ferrita acicular, bainita e martensita em baixa fração volumétrica. Ambos os constituintes apresentaram variação de microdureza com o revenido e apresentaram envelhecimento na temperatura de 550°C. Este envelhecimento foi atribuído à precipitação de carbonetos tipos M7C3 e MC com base nas simulações termodinâmicas.

The client for this project specializes in the use of state-of-the-art technology to fabricate and assemble composites and metal-bonded structures for commercial and military aircraft programs. One of the key components for this operation at the client&apos;s plant is a highly precise computer-numerical-controlled router known as the Shoda Machine. This machine tool was installed at the plant in July 1998 for the manufacture and inspection of aircraft parts, and it is extremely sensitive to deflections. To monitor the occurrence of deflections, an internal laser system continuously checks the machine calibration. Deflections in excess of 5/1000-inch in the foundation on which the machine rests require costly periodic re-leveling and recalibration of this tool. Therefore, a significant problem arose when measured deflections during machine operation were as large as 20/1000-inch. In addition, the foundation was cracked in at least three places as a result of elastic foundation movement caused by dynamic loading as well as shrinkage and loss of base support. Deciding on a remediation procedure to alleviate or eliminate these problems involved the following important considerations: (1) achieving the client&apos;s need for reducing deflections to less than 5/1000-inch, (2) minimizing the repair cost as much as possible, and (3) reducing the time required for implementation of the foundation remediation solution. After evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of several alternatives, jet grouting was selected as the most suitable solution. The jet grouting program provided columnar elements of soilcrete to remediate the Shoda Machine foundation.
