In his time on earth, man has mined about 93.3 kt (3 billion oz) of gold. About one-half of this has been produced in the past 35 years. Roughly one-third of this gold is held as reserve in Central Banks. One-third held is in personal reserves. And one-third is held as jewelry or other fabricated products. The world per capita availability of mined gold is increasing. There are many forces shaping gold's future. Gold currently has a favorable exchange ratio. This is encouraging many new gold mining developments. Production is increasing and new recovery techniques are surfacing. The use of gold in the financial markets is increasing in some unique ways. And gold is again fulfilling its role as a universal money, making its future predictable. Gold Today Man is currently mining gold at the rate of about 1.4 kt/a (44 million oz per year). This adds about 1.5% of newly mined gold to the total supply each year. This production plays a small role in the pricing mechanisms since much of the 93.3 kt (3 billion oz) mined is available to the market in some form. The possible closure and subsequent flooding of South Deep Gold Mine?s neighbouring Randfontein Estates Limited No. 4 Shaft (REL 4) necessitated the construction of five concrete plugs in the connecting tunnels to prevent the ingress of groundwater into REL4 from flooding South Deep mine. Several technical investigations had been carried out before and during construction of the plugs in order to reduce the probability of groundwater flow through the boundary pillar between the two mines or through the rock mass immediately around the plugs. This paper describes the geological, hydrogeological and stability investigations carried out to evaluate the structural competence of the boundary pillar.

The development of a resource project inevitably requires the investigation of a vast range of issues across most engineering disciplines û mining, metallurgical, chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical and environmental û as well as the geosciences. It is also a characteristic feature of the resource industry that no two orebodies û and hence no two development projects û are the same. So these technical issues have to be addressed to a greater or lesser extent in evaluating any resource projectÆs development potential. Not surprisingly then, technical issues tend to predominate when assessing the development potential of a project in the process typically referred to as ædoing a feasibility studyÆ. But the principal purpose of a æfeasibility studyÆ is to determine whether a development opportunity makes good business sense, not just whether it is technically possible. Resolution of technical issues is often seen as the primary focus of a feasibility study, whereas in reality, these technical issues are the basis upon which an asset delivery and business plan is built. This is not to say that technical issues are unimportant û they are a prerequisite to the demonstration of a projectÆs viability. The feasibility study process must therefore demonstrate that not only have the technical issues been satisfactorily addressed, but also that the broader commercial, economic and social issues have been considered in the development of a comprehensive business plan, which includes an assessment of the risk-reward profile of the proposed development. This paper will present a framework for the conduct of æfeasibility studiesÆ and provide guidance to minimum standards and best practice.

The pellet plant, built by Dravo Corp, in Groveland, Mich., for the Hanna Mining Co., is now in full operation. Although using jasper, a type of iron ore with low iron content (approximately 28% Fe), the plant has a rated capacity of 1,250,000 tans of pellets per year. In its four years of existence, the nearby concentrating plant has seen its capacity increase from 700,000 tons to 1,500,000 tons a year as part of a major expansion program at Groveland. Utilizing the Dravo-Lurgi continuous grate process, the pellet plant produces %a-in. pellets of more than 60% iron content. The fully-hooded pelletizing grate, largest in the U.S., is 9 ft. 10% in. wide and 223 ft. 1% in. tong over 34 windboxes, with an effective hearth area of 2195 sq. ft. Drying, firing, and cooling functions are all carried out on this single piece of equipment.

"Ground Water or Pore water pressure development in Sandy Soil formation is Critical situation in foundation analysis and design.Moreover it become severe while associated with higher liquefaction probability in river bank areas. It is difficult to find cost optimized solution for liquefaction mitigation under limited budget allocated for the project. Here in these research paper the attempt has been made to have clear picture of liquefaction by using various techniques and field tests. And its mitigation by suitable foundation type. In Bangladesh, On Bank of River Meghana, Power plant structures are proposed. The particular site is full of fine sand having partial silt throughout from EGL to 55 m depth. Hence in addition to Conventional Boring / Drilling operations, CPLT, SCPT, SCHT and PMT had been performed to arrive deterministic effect of liquefaction. By use of Geologismiki software and some excel based programs developed which indicates that Certainly liquefaction occurs under the event of earthquake. By Checking past records of Bangladesh we found, there are small magnitude earthquakes are inevitable and frequent. Hence fourth to overcome the bad effect of liquefaction, the deep pile foundation -Driven Pre Cast Solid Square Pile of 400 mm dia. had been suggested for various types of power plant structures. Which densify the soil and ground will improve in resisting liquefaction.1. INTRODUCTIONA Detailed Geotechnical/Foundation design Analysis had been done to arrive at optimum foundation design solution in highly probable liquefaction zone of Silty Fine Sand near Dhaka City of Bangladesh for proposed 750 MW Cyclic Power Plant. Hence about 24 no. of (Borehole) Boring and Drilling up to depth of 55 m from existing ground level has been carried out. Additionally, 09 nos. of Static Cone Penetration Test (SCPT), 02 Nos. of Dynamic Cone Penetration Test (DCPT), 02 Nos. of Pressure meter test (PMT), 02 nos. of Cyclic Plate load test (CPLT) of suitable capacity with 06 nos. of Seismic Cross Hole Test (SCHT) in boreholes had been carried out. The purpose of PMT and SCHT was to have clear idea about the Seismic behavior - knowhow of site. According to Basic principles of Soil Mechanics and foundation design, it is proved that PMT & SCHT are dynamic test. These tests stimulate field condition of occurrences of earthquake. In later stages of analysis, it is found that site have high probability of liquefaction through use of Geologismiki – Liquefaction Analysis Software. Author of these research paper also felt earthquake vibrations – strong aftershocks during site study where Epicenter of the earthquake was in Myanmar during month of august 2016."

A máquina convencional de usinagem por descargas elétricas (EDM) é utilizada no processo de nitretação por descargas elétricas (NDE), pois permite enriquecer a superfície de um substrato de aço SAE 52100 com nitretos em meio a uma solução dielétrica composta por água deionizada e ureia. O objetivo do presente trabalho é caracterizar as camadas formadas ao utilizar uma solução dielétrica (30g / l) como fonte de nitrogênio e comparar as propriedades obtidas quando se utiliza eletrodo de cobre eletrolítico. As caracterizações das amostras no processo foram por meio das técnicas de microscopia óptica (OM), microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e microdureza Vickers (HV), revelando a formação de uma camada uniforme e endurecida de nitretos, recoberta por uma camada branca (Zona Refundida), como comprovado por difração de Raio-X (DRX) a formação de compostos com nitrogênio. As camadas formadas no eletrodo peça temperado e revenido foram mais espessas do que as que formaram no eletrodo peça esferoidizado. Para avaliar o desempenho do processo de usinagem, foram utilizados parâmetros como taxa de remoção de material (TRM), taxa de desgaste do eletrodo ferramenta (TD) e desgaste volumétrico (DVR).

The Bureau of Mines has conducted studies of the slags related to ferrous technology to evaluate experimentally acceptable substitutes for the auxiliary flux, mineral fluorspar, in steelmaking operations. Comparative heats were made in a 1/4-ton, pilot-scale, basic oxygen furnace (BOF) to evaluate a waste material known as "used potlining." Used pot lining is recovered from alumina reduction cells after its useful life and contains significant levels of fluorine and sodium in various compounds. This material in both lump and pelletized form provided adequately fluid slags, based on observations made during BOF operation. No adverse effects were found on furnace performance, metal and slag chemsitry, the strength of the steel produced, or the environment. Fluorine recovery in the slag was about the same as that obtained when using fluorspar, as were the losses to the scrubber water and solids. No difference was observed in furnace-refractory attack, as determined by the level of magnesia in the slag. The sodium recovered in the slag apparently also contributed to fluidity, since the fluorine input was at about two-thirds that of the fluorspar. Used potlining was determined experimentally to be a satisfactory substitute for fluorspar in basic oxygen steelmaking.

Recent regulatory changes in the United States make it mandatory to conduct structural analysis of coal mine seals used to isolate abandoned workings from active mining areas. Different loading criteria are available for seal design depending on whether gob composition is actively monitored and maintained or not and whether the gob conditions lead to deflagration or detonation type loading. Since the loads involved in seal designs are dynamic in nature, the structural analysis must be made using dynamic stress analysis techniques. However, because of the significant complexities involved in conducting dynamic analyses, some designers use approximate simplified techniques to address the design problem. In this paper two such simplified methods are critically evaluated for their suitability to design coal mine seals. The benefits and limitations of the simplified methods are also outlined. Some comparisons are made to show the differences between sophisticated three dimensional dynamic analyses and the simplified methods and to delineate the problems associated with the latter approaches.

A otimização da matriz energética na produção de metais tem sido um dos tópicos predominantes mundialmente. Um dos principais consumidores ineficientes de energia, em alguns casos impactando inclusive no consumo de fornos elétricos são os sistemas de aquecimento de panelas. Buscando novas alternativas de redução de custos de energia, e redução de emissões, a White Martins encontrou uma alternativa técnica aos convencionais Pré-Aquecedores de panelas ar-gás. É o Sistema de Aquecimento de Panelas Oxicombustão com queimador Optifire, que utiliza oxigênio puro como comburente ou ar enriquecido. Comparado ao sistema ar-gás convencional, é possível promover uma economia de combustível de até 50% e redução de emissões de carbono e NOx. A tecnologia do equipamento consiste em realizar a queima estequiométrica balanceada, através da medição precisa dos gases, utilizando queimadores avançados com maior eficiência e melhorando a distribuição de calor, de forma a não gerar diferenças de temperatura entre seções. Com a tecnologia Optifire é possível inclusive o remanejamento de combustível mais nobre, como gás de coqueria em processos como aquecimento de regeneradores de altos-fornos. Este trabalho descreverá o estudo da oportunidade e dimensionamento para aquecedores de panela.

With decreasing ore grades, the tailings of mining operations are becoming of increasing interest as metal-containing secondary raw materials. The objective of the current work was to investigate chloride leaching of gold, copper, cobalt, nickel, and zinc present in the flotation tailings. In the current study, the effect of cupric ion as an oxidant (0–50 g/L) and NaCl (150–250 g/L) on metals extraction was investigated. The other parameters, such as pH (1.8), temperature (95 °C), solid/liquid ratio (25%), oxygen feed rate (1200 mL/min), leaching time (24 h), and stirring rate (950 rpm), were kept constant. Gold dissolution rate was shown to increase with increase in cupric ion concentrations up to 50 g/L. Also, increase in NaCl concentration up to 250 g/L increased gold extraction. Majority of the copper present in the flotation tailings could be dissolved with all the all solutions investigated. The other base metals, cobalt, nickel, and zinc extractions were also shown to increase with increase in the cupric ion and sodium chloride concentration. However, even in the absence of cupric ion addition (t = 72 h, 250 g/L NaCl), the final extraction of Cu, Ni, Zn, Co, and Fe increased up to 98, 93, 83, 76, and 80%, respectively. This shows the power of inherently originating oxidants present in the tailings. Furthermore, the solid analysis of the leach residue indicated that leaching the flotation tailings in pure NaCl may result in partial gold dissolution. The results demonstrate that significant amount of metals present in the tailings could be extracted even with only NaCl as added chemical in the presence of oxygen feed, oxidizing agents originating directly from the raw material. This can provide an advantageous cyanide-free method for extraction of metals from very low-grade tailings with low chemical consumption.

This is the final report for Research Contract No. 00101300 (Min. 34) granted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to the University of Idaho Mining Research Bureau. The research project is entitled "Development of Improved Ventilation Technology for Non-coal Mines and Other Underground Excavations.' The duration of the project was six calendar months, from 16 April to 16 October 1970. The budgeted cost was $34,867.00 of which $31,953.00 was to be furnished by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The sequence of reporting that follows is to state the objectives as contracted, outline the program of investigation, highlight briefly the important technological factors peculiar to vein-type metal mine ventilation, and describe the normal methods of control. This is followed by the results achieved by the survey, and an itemization of the observed deficiencies in current technology. There follows a section dealing with the adopted Federal Regulations.

Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) project C25073 was proposed by industry stakeholders seeking a potential solution that improves underground air quality and reduces operational costs associated with technology used to control diesel particulate emissions in the underground coal mining environment.The need to protect workers from diesel particulate matter (DPM) has lead the underground coal mining industry to install disposable filter systems on their vehicles. While the disposable filters are efficient at removing significant amounts of DPM, the following major issues have arisen:- high cost of operations; disposable filters cost $A250–300 each and need to be changed at least once per shift resulting in an estimated cost of up to $A164 M/a, in filters alone, to the NSW underground coal mining industry- improper installation, damaged seals and lack of installing a new filter when the old filter is removed; workers are still being exposed to excessive amounts of DPM.The ACARP project successfully demonstrated significant DPM emissions reduction comparable to the incumbent disposable technology on a proof-of-concept wall-flow diesel particulate filter (DPF) system, as well as satisfactory system robustness when assessed using an industry representative test cycle representing operations of a load haul dump (LHD) vehicle typical of that used by the Australian underground coal industry. It was noted in testing that the technology increased modal NO2 formation, but was compliant over typical operational duty cycles.One of the key benefits with the use of a wall-flow DPF system is its tamper-proof design, mitigating the risk of operating unfiltered diesel plant in poorly ventilated areas. Elimination of the need for continual replacement of disposable filters provides significant operational savings estimated to be up to 80 per cent of the incumbent technology.In addition to the above, the project also delivered a number of significant contributions to the knowledgebase of the Australian and international coal industry with regard to the characterisation of operations and control of emissions.CITATION:Coplin, N, 2017. As part of a continuing effort to develop technology that maximizes mineral and metal recovery from domestic resources, the Bureau of Mines investigated a method to totally utilize copper converter slags without recycling them back through the matte smelting furnace. The research was directed toward (1) recovering the contained copper in converting slags by producing a recyclable copper-iron matte, (2) carbothermically reducing the slags to recover the iron, and (3) producing slag wool from the depleted slags. This report deals with the reduction of three industrial converting slags, containing 2.0 to 7.3 wt-pct Cu, in an 800-kVA electric arc furnace to produce a recyclable copper-iron matte. The addition of sufficient iron pyrite to provide 29 to 113 pct of the stoichiometric sulfur (based on producing 40-pct-Cu matte) produced a recyclable matte (36 to 61 pct Cu) at an energy consumption of 520 to 700 kWh per ton of solid material charged. The expected energy saving for treating molten slag in an electric furnace (5-to 9-MVA range) is about 400 kWh per ton of molten slag treated.

"The year 2011 witnessed a major surge in rare earth prices as China, supplier of +95% of the world’s rare earths, reduced export quotas and increased export taxes and duties. In response, companies around the world are scrambling for alternative sources. In Canada too, there is a race to be the “first” rare earth producer. Something that is not generally realized is that Canada has a long history of rare earth production and was a major supplier from the early 1960’s to 1990. At one stage, Canada was said to be supplying more than one third of the world’s yttrium and probably supplied even more than that. Five decades ago, thorium was a key element in many non-nuclear applications and Canada became a major supplier of thorium from the late 1950’s to 1968, first as a by-product of uranium and then as a co-product of rare earths. This paper reviews the development of Canada’s original rare earth and thorium production facilities, which were located in the Elliot Lake uranium camp in Northern Ontario. The uses of these elements, geology, mineralogy, markets of the time, and processing are all discussed. Some of the lessons learned from these pioneering operations might be useful in today’s race to develop the next generation of rare earth production plants.INTRODUCTION The rare earths and thorium were first identified in the early 19th century but were little more than curiosities for the next century. However, in the mid-1960’s the invention of rare earth-based phosphors for the cathode ray tube in colour television sets launched a major demand for certain rare earths. The use of thorium as an alloying agent in aircraft and missiles grew rapidly in the late 1950’s. In the same period, demand for uranium for both weapons and power production soared. Also in the late 1950’s, the Elliot Lake uranium-thorium-rare earth deposits (also known as the Blind River deposits) were discovered. This conjugation of events led to uranium production in the Elliot Lake camp, quickly followed by the co-production of thorium and, later, the rare earths. Uranium production in the Elliot Lake camp continued from 1955 to 1996. Thorium was produced continuously from 1959 to 1969. Rare earths were produced, intermittently, from 1965 to 1990. Complete production records are not readily available for thorium and the rare earths but unquestionably Elliot Lake production made a significant contribution to world production. This paper is intended to present as much of the information that is available."

INTRODUCTION When divers discovered that sections of a tunnel housing the pipeline that conveys wastewater from the Charleston Peninsula to the Plum Island Wastewater Treatment Facility had caved in, the Charleston Commissioners of Public Works(CPW) moved quickly to determine a long term solution for the city’s collection system, immediately focusing on the Ashley River sewer tunnel along the western boundary of the peninsula. Working with the Charleston community, as well as federal, state, and local officials, CPW developed a fast track yet long life design that can be used as a model for underground construction of tunnels in urban areas. The paper that follows summarizes key aspects of the Ashley River sewer tunnel project. HISTORICAL CHARLESTON Charleston, South Carolina is a culturally significant and historic city that was originally settled in 1670. There are over 100 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places within the Charleston area. Additionally, the first shots of the American Civil War were fired at Fort Sumter in the Charleston Harbor in 1861. As one can imagine, tourism generates significant business for the area with over 1.5 million people visiting Charleston each year. No project, especially one that requires digging, is done within the old city on the Charleston peninsula without careful planning. Many precautions are necessary to prevent damage or disruption to the historical properties. The Ashley River sewer tunnel project is exclusively in the old city. A lot of work was done during the design phase to minimize the impact to historical properties. Some of this work included: an archeological study (where pre-digs were monitored at all shaft sites by an archeologist); a building/structure assessment study (where structures near a shaft site were completely surveyed and cataloged); and an environmental study.
