Introduction Examining the short- and long-term job prospects for engineers in the coal industry might include looking at coal tonnage projections, future export markets, federal regulations, and the decrease in overall graduates. But coal is the US most competitive basic industry. As such, why not go back to basics? That is, there are three basic challenges that need to be faced by students, faculty, and members of the coal industry. These challenges are counseling, career placement, and professionalism. Counseling Counseling can include elementary, high school, and college students, as well as individuals already employed. But what happens to students after they have selected a course of study at a particular university? As shown in Fig. 1, only 87,000, or 7.25% of our graduates have technical degrees. Generally, there is a strong market projected for these engineering graduates. However, many students who have majored in other nontechnical curriculums, have to scramble for jobs. This says something about our ability to make students aware of where the real job opportunities are. As a student spends four or five years pursuing a degree, he or she is looking for professional guidance. The student has the right to expect "real world" counseling - counseling that is not "the way it should be" but "the way it is." The influence of faculty members is significant. They should take this long opportunity to tell students not what they want to hear or what the problem's of academia or the industry are, but what the real job market is all about. If faculty do not use this opportunity, they in-advertently-through omission - mislead their students. Once a student graduates and is a working alumnus, faculty should take advantage of their relationship with the student and continue to stimulate conversation leading to a two-way exchange of ideas and information. Faculty should also encourage and solicit financial support for their mining departments from their alumni. These monies, in many cases, will be matched dollar for dollar or more, depending on the company the alumnus works for. In the private sector, the responsibility is to communicate with faculty and students. Alumni can be effective by participating in this two-way dialogue with their professors at meetings, technical seminars, and conventions. In many cases, alumni will employ summer or co-op students in their organizations. While getting to know these students, industry members should level with them on where the true opportunities are and what it takes to be successful. It is important to communicate with both faculty and students candidly on both the posi-

"Although diamond mining is a relative newcomer to the Canadian mining industry, with the first diamond mine coming on stream in 1998, Canada is already a significant producer of high quality diamonds. This paper will review diamond production trends and highlight some of the projects currently under development, which have the potential to enhance Canada’s role as a significant diamond producer.Diamond recovery plants generally incorporate well-established mineral processing and recovery techniques, with issues such as product security, cut-off sizes, and diamond preservation becoming important considerations when developing process flowsheets. A diamond processing plant must achieve three key objectives, namely:• Liberation of the diamonds from the host rock;• Separation of the heavy minerals, which include the diamonds, from the host rock;• Recovery of the diamonds from the heavy mineral concentrates.Processing technologies and equipment commonly utilized in diamond processing plants will be reviewed and some of the significant issues associated with each option briefly discussed.Typical process flowsheets will be presented.Finally, an overview of De Beers’ Victor diamond project, located in northern Ontario, will be provided. This potentially significant diamond producer is currently at a pre-feasibility stage of development.DIAMONDS IN CANADAWorld Diamond ProductionCommercial diamond mining commenced in earnest with the discovery of the Kimberley diamondfields in South Africa in the late 1800s, and this resulted in a dramatic increase in the supply of diamonds. As can be seen from figure 1, world diamond production, mainly from South Africa, Angola, Congo, and Namibia, remained relatively constant through the early 1900s until the development of the large Russian kimberlite pipes in the 1950s. Production increased again in the 1960s and 70s with the development of the Botswana mines, but the most significant increase in global production came from the Argyle mine in Australia, which came on stream in 1983 and produced a peak of almost 43 million carats in 1994, representing approximately 40% of the world market. Production from Argyle has since fallen-off as grades have declined and the strip ratio has increased with the deepening of the open pit."

Este projeto tem como objetivo desenvolver o uso do transporte multimodal nas operações de entrega de produtos via cabotagem, para as regiões Norte e Nordeste, em sinergia de todas as usinas da ArcelorMittal no Brasil. O trabalho visa demonstrar os principais dificuldades e benefícios da utilização da cabotagem. O projeto foi subdividido em etapas de implantação, que se iniciou com um processo de contratação, envolvendo os fornecedores de cabotagem e serviços de ovação para as operações das unidades de Longos (Cariacica, Sabará, Itaúna, Juiz de Fora e Piracicaba) e de Planos (Tubarão) de forma conjunta buscando uma melhor condição comercial e contratos sólidos de atendimento, com foco na utilização das mesmas estruturas de terminais, portos, fornecedores e até containers. Foi estimada uma redução significante dos impactos socioambientais e dos custos de fretes para organização.

En este sentido, el presente texto señala la producción de oro de esta minera peruana, utilizando dichas herramientas mencionadas. Para ello, se describe la geología, minado, características del monitor seleccionado, características de la bomba de alta presión, metalurgia y las plantas de lavado.

Efficacy of Enhanced Gravity Separator in Processing Indian Iron Ore Slime The slime sample was subjected to concentration using Falcon concentrator for their enrichment. The effects of three important variables, eg bowl rotation frequency, back water flow rate and per cent solid were studied on the process performance. Increasing the rotation of the Falcon bowl, enable more material to the underflow by increasing the yield, whereas, the iron content decreases steadily with increasing the rotation of the bowl. The increase in the back water flow effectively removes the clay materials from the underflow at the expense of the yield. Similarly, increasing the per cent solid concentration in the feed produces a better product both in terms of yield and Fe content. Results show that EGS/Falcon can be used for processing Indian iron ore slime and producing pellet grade concentrate.

Dado que la extracción de metales exige revisar la tecnología existente para así proveer de los metales necesarios que se requieren para suplir esas exigencias. En ese sentido, el presente texto describe la lixiviación bacteriana como la tecnología de vanguardia para recuperar elemetos metálicos a partir de materiales mineros marginales. Los sulfuros metálicos tienen propiedades electroquímicas que pueden transferir electrones, generando reacciones tipo redox. Por ello, los thiobacillus thiooxidans y los thiobacillus ferrooxidans para su metabolismo, requieren ganar energía de aquellos electrones ubicados en orbitales de un alto nivel energético. De esta manera, una bacteria puede catalizar un proceso redox con un sulfuro metálico. La pérdida de electrones en un sulfuro significa enlaces rotos y esto origina la disolución del sulfuro metálico. Así, se postulan dos mecanismos por el cual se produce la disolución del sulfuro.

The El Boleo Copper Project is currently in the final design stages for development of a 3-MM-tonne/yr underground copper mine located in Baja California, Mexico. The nearly horizontal mineralized zones are amenable to exploitation by conventional mechanized coal mining technology using continuous miners, shuttle cars, and belt haulage. The mine design resembles a typical full-extraction coal mining operation utilizing a sequence of mains, sub-mains and production panels. Due to numerous faults, mining will be conducted as several small adjacent mines accessed through adits from large arroyos cutting through the mine area. Up to four seams may be mined in some areas with a maximum overburden depth of about 250 m. The ore zone is relatively weak and plastic, subject to extensive creep over time. The mine workings will pass through areas of historical shortwall mining panels where the ground has flowed into old entries and gob areas, and then reconsolidated. A small test mine was developed to evaluate mechanical cutting performance, roof-bolt anchorage capacities, roof and pillar stability and caving behavior. In-mine measurements were combined with two- and three-dimensional FLAC models to evaluate alternative development and production pillar designs. The paper will discuss the various factors influencing ground stability at the El Boleo project and the strategies employed in developing a suitable ground control design.

O lingotamento contínuo de tarugos é um processo extremamente complexo dependente de variáveis que influenciam diretamente na qualidade do aço lingotado e na produtividade. Geralmente essa influência é conflituosa. É necessário conhecer melhor os parâmetros de processo para compreender seus efeitos naquilo que é a base do lingotamento contínuo: a transferência de calor na interface metal/molde. Foram levantados dados de temperatura durante o lingotamento de diversas corridas de aços em uma planta de aços longos especiais. As medidas de temperatura das paredes do molde da máquina LC foram obtidas, utilizando-se termopares estrategicamente posicionados ao longo do comprimento do molde e nas suas faces. Através da obtenção dos valores de temperatura desses termopares e do levantamento dos dados de processo de cada corrida monitorada, foi possível correlacionar a influência da velocidade com a transferência de calor na interface metal/molde. Por fim, os resultados mostram que o aumento da velocidade de lingotamento gera um aumento na transferência de calor.

Tungsten metal, chemically equivalent to commercial grade, is produced by electrolysis of impure tungsten compounds or scheelite in an alkali, phosphate or borate electrolyte. A preliminary investigation of fused-bath electrolysis shows the effect of electrolyte composition, temperature, and current density on current efficiency, yield, crystal structure, and purity of product. Experiments show that tungsten can be electrowon from scheelite in a fused alkali, phosphate, or borate bath with similar results. Studies on electrolyte composition show that the addition of sodium chloride is essential to both electrolytes in treating scheelite. Although its main function is to react with or flux the CaO, it also increases the bath fluidity. Temperature studies revealed optimum ranges between 900° and 1,100° C.; 900° C. proved satisfactory for tungsten trioxide, and 950° to 1,050° C. for scheelite. Current efficiencies were satisfactory for all current densities ranging from 10 to 57 a./dm.2. Yields were 400 to 650 g./kw.-hr. over the same current-density range. Crystal size and purity of the product are functions of temperature, current density, and amount of impurities in the electrolyte. Deposited crystals vary in shape from spherical grains to clusters of dendritic hexagonal needles, and in size from smaller than 35 to 570 microns. The purity of the tungsten metal produced ranges from 99.7 to 99.94 percent.

Oceana Gold (New Zealand) Limited (OceanaGold) has commenced mining operations at the Globe-Progress mine in the Reefton Goldfield, an area that historically produced 2.1 million ounces of gold from underground quartz lode deposits. During the construction phase of the operation, advanced exploration programmes targeting near-mine prospects commenced. The focus of this ongoing exploration is the discovery of near surface, refractory gold deposits that are amenable to open-pit mining methods and treatment through the Globe-Progress process plant.   One such discovery is the Supreme deposit, located along strike approximately 3 kilometres to the south of the Globe-Progress mine. The Supreme area was tested extensively with diamond drilling in 2006, defining a deposit with similar mineralisation styles and grade to the Globe-Progress deposit. The mineralisation comprises a central core of gold-bearing quartz veins, locally containing visible gold, surrounded by a more extensive halo of refractory, disseminated gold associated with an arsenopyrite-pyrite sulphide mineral assemblage. Three subparallel mineralised structures host the mineralisation. These structures are highly oblique to the country rock orientations, extending approximately 250 metres along a northeast-southwest strike and at least 220 metres down-dip, with an average thickness of 12 metres and moderate dip to the southeast. Records of historical workings indicate that mineralisation extends further down-dip and remains open at depth. 5175 ounces of gold were mined historically at the Supreme deposit. OceanaGold have defined an Inferred Resource for the Supreme deposit of 0.84 million tonnes at 1.46 grams per tonne for a total of 40 000 ounces (at a 0.8 grams per tonne cut-off). Higher-grade zones of mineralisation exist within the deposit and further drilling is planned to test the extent, continuity and geological controls of the mineralised structures.

The separation performance of a raw coal sample from South Africa based on the dense gas-solid fluidized bed beneficiation technique was investigated. Analysis showed that the raw coal sample distributes mainly in the -50+6 mm size range with the -1.6 g/cm3 density fraction accounting for 78.20% of the cumulative mass distribution. A flow sheet of the sequential coal beneficiation technique was introduced. The experimental and simulation results of the hydromechanical and density distribution stability indicate that the dense gas-solid fluidized bed could provide a stable separation environment with uniform density fluctuations under suitable operating conditions. With the application of this technique on the raw coal sample, the separation results show that three products, consisting of 73.25% clean coal with an ash content of 9.59%, 11.31% middlings, and 15.44% gangue were effectively separated at two different densities of 1.82 g/cm3 and 1.57 g/cm3. This study provides an effective flow sheet for achieving the high-efficiency separation performance on raw coal from arid areas. "Silver and gold leaching by cyanidation is a well-known process used around the world. This reaction is often accompanied by the leaching of other species throughtout the cyanidation circuit that causes the diversion of cyanide towards non valuable by-products (SCN-, Cu(CN)x, Fe(CN)x, etc.). One of the detrimental impacts of the formation of these by-products is the precipitation of silver-cyanide complexes that occurs when cyanide concentration is too low. Without any extra-addition of free cyanide, the precipitated silver is lost and cannot be recovered causing an important economic loss. To overcome silver precipitation, cyanidation circuits are often operated at higher cyanide concentrations. Recently, COREM’s research team has been working on a technology to measure and control silver precipitation during the cyanidation process. Moreover, a methodology has been elaborated in order to evaluate threshold cyanide level which corresponds to the cyanide concentration at which silver starts to precipitate. This technology has been tested on site on a real cyanidation circuit at Agnico Eagle’s LaRonde mine."

1. Domestic Production and Use: In 1984, 12 companies operated 27 primary aluminum reduction plants, with 3 firms accounting for 57% of production. Washington, Oregon, and Montana accounted for 35% of the production; Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, and Tennessee 25%; Alabama, Arkansas, Texas, South Carolina, and North Carolina 20%; other States 20%. Based on published producer prices, output of primary metal in 1984 was valued at $7.2 billion. Aluminum consumption by 25,000 firms was centered in the east-central United States. Packaging accounted for an estimated 35% of domestic consumption in 1984, transportation, 20%; building, 18%; electrical, 9%; consumer durables, 8%; and other uses, 10%.

"Rock rejection during the flotation of a copper-nickel ore was improved by adding carboxymethyl cellulose to both a rougher and cleaner flotation stage. The selection of the rock depressant was based on laboratory rates studies. Plant operating results are presented which confirm the laboratory selection of two particular brands of carboxymethyl cellulose.The rock assay of the concentrate was reduced from more than 40% to less than 15%.IntroductionThe traditional method of selecting flotation reagents relied upon batch bench scale tests, conducted under arbitrary conditions, to identify the effect of the reagent under examination. Too often these were ""one-off"" tests with little or no regard paid to the reproducibility of the results. Sophisticated researchers used statistical methods to design and evaluate the experiments but they were still obliged to rely on the arbitrary and often unreliable batch tests to generate the numbers that were analyzed statistically. An interesting side-effect of the enhanced sophistication of the statistical analysis was often that no significant effects would be uncovered in a series of experiments that would have generated many positive conclusions and much further experimentation if the same results had been evaluated by the traditional method.In the recent past, at least two groups of researchers a have directed their attention to the reliability of the batch experiments with a view toward improving the reproducibility of the test data. In this work the best of the improvements advocated by both of these groups have been adopted in order to generate kinetic data from batch tests that are as reproducible as possible.The objective of the work was to reduce the rock content of a bulk sulphide concentrate produced at Inco's Shebandowan mill. During 1982 the Shebandowan concentrate analyzed 3.5% Cu, 7.4010 Ni, 25% pyrrhotite and more than 40% rock, which resulted in an MgO content of 10.4%. Besides the expense of shipping all of this rock to Sudbury, the rock also contributed to the poor filterability of the concentrate. On favourable occasions the moisture content of the filter cake was slightly over 20% by weight. The magnesia content of the concentrate was deleterious to the reverberatory furnaces used by Inco for smelting nickel concentrate because the slag viscosity increased as the magnesia content increased, and the nickel lost in the slag went up."

"There is a dire need of a technology which can break the mineral interfaces to enhance liberation with minimum energy consumption in mineral beneficiation processes. Understanding of mineral crystal system and interfaces is essential to develop such methodology. So, this study is carried out to find out the role of mineral crystallography in milling and liberation. Data related of mineral crystallography, Vickers Hardness Number, Bond Work Index and beneficiation processes were collected from literature and detailed statistical analysis has been carried out to establish a correlation among these parameters. It was found that atomic weight and cell parameters shown statistically significant relationship with Vickers Hardness Number of minerals, which controls the milling characteristics of ores. Liberation characteristics of five different kinds of ores were analyzed considering the types of interfaces between valuable and gangue minerals. It was found that phase interfaces play vita role in liberation and coarser liberation can be achieved in the minerals of incoherent crystal systems like manganese and zinc ores. Study of this subject can help us to understand the effect of stress wave propagation in solids and its effect on crystal interfaces. It can also help us to design a technology of future to break the mineral interfaces.INTRODUCTIONCommunition is energy intensive mineral processing operation and consumes up to 2% of the total electric power generated in the world. Energy consumption due to comminution is increasing every year as there is growing needs to exploit lower grade ore bodies and process rejects (Blazy et al., 1994; DOE, 2005). Low grade ores require crushing and grinding to liberate the valuable minerals which are further separated from gangues by various beneficiation methods like gravity separation, floatation, leaching etc. Currently, comminution methods are selected based on the reduction ratio and energy consumption but effect of grinding methods on subsequent processing methods specially on liberation also need to be studied to optimize the entire beneficiation process. Most of the attempts made in past to minimize the energy consumption in milling to enhance the mineral liberation were focused on compression mechanism, chemical additives, thermal treatment, microwave treatment and electric disintegration (Kilpelm and Austin, 1982; Norgate and Weller et al, 1994; Bearman et al., 1997; Kumar et al., 2010; Wang el al., 2011; Singh et al., 2012). But the role of mineral crystallography on milling and liberation behavior of minerals not fully explored yet."

O objetivo desse trabalho é planejar e controlar a chegada de veículos para carregamento nas plantas ArcelorMittal Tubarao e ArcelorMittal Vega, apresentando uma agenda com os horários disponíveis para o transportador escolher. Esse processo de escolha de um horário disponível é suportado por uma agenda gerada pela usina, considerando as restrições operacionais e de capacidade de expedição por ponto de carregamento. Programar a chegada de veículos aumenta a previsibilidade da necessidade de recursos adicionais para realizar o carregamento e assim não gerar filas, não perdendo produtividade no processo de transporte com veículos parados. A ausência da programação tem uma abrangência muito maior que apenas perda de produtividade e atrasos, ela também eleva o custo total de transporte da cadeia de suprimentos. Visando aumentar a competitividade e melhorar a previsibilidade do processo de expedição, foi implementada a solução para regular o fluxo de chegada dos veículos, sistematizando o processo de agendamento do veículo para carregamento.

O trabalho consiste na avaliação das Tensões Residuais através da técnica dos Furos-Cegos. O componente em estudo consiste em chapas de Aço A36 aplicadas para compor a estrutura de prensas hidraulicas. Com auxílio do software Solid Works versão 2013, foi realizado a simulação do estado de tensões sofridos pelas chapas quando a prensa hidraulica encontra-se em trabalho, determinando assim o seu fator de segurança. Em seguida, pelo método da aproximação sucessiva, foi adicionado furos-cegos ou furos passantes com diâmetros variados ao longo da geometria das chapas a fim de verificar o comportamento dos estados de tensões. Portanto, através da aplicação de furos-cegos nas chapas, foi possível identificar o diâmetro e posição ideal que permitiu um ganho significativo no fator de segurança das chapas, permitindo assim, reduzir o número de chapas no processo impactando diretamente nos custos e no tempo de fabricação do equipamento.

En esta investigación, con criterio de circularidad se identificó la oportunidad de aplicar una variante del proceso SART, ya que en el flujo proveniente de la precipitación de plata y oro denominada solución pobre o barren la concentración de cianuro Wad es superior a 2000 mg/L. Por otro lado, en los depósitos de mineral piritoso expuesto a la intemperie se generan flujos de drenaje ácido de diferentes características, destacando dos de pH menor a 0.5 unidades y altos contenidos de metales solubles que son tratados actualmente en una planta de neutralización y precipitación de metales.

El presento trabajo revisa las diversas medidas preventivas de seguridad minera que se dieron en el periodo colonial peruano. Durante la colonia, la deplorable situación económica y social del indio, conlleva una reacción de defensa humanitaria por parte de los frailes a través de leyes en favor de los indios. Posteriormente en 1551, el virrey La Gasca elaboró una serie de medidas como "Las leyes de indias", "Las ordenanzas de nuevos descubrimientos y poblaciones",entre otros, que protegian a los indios. En 1783 se dictaron "Las Ordenanzas de minería" para la nueva España y fue el virrey Francisco de Toledo, el primero en dictaminar la construcción de pozos y puentes en lugares convenientes, castigando a los infractores. En su Ordenanza II, refiere el caso de las minas de Potosí y ordena no desbaratar puentes ni pilares para evitar riesgos inútiles, mientras que su Ordenanza III dispone la regulación de las escaleras seguras de scrinejas. Asimismo prohibió el trabajo de menores de edad y el "pallaqueo" de mujeres en la mina. En cuanto a la salud ocupacional refiere, el virrrey Toledo dispuso la distancia entre el humo generado por el plomo y zinc, y los trabajadores, asi como su indemnización durante tres meses. Don Juan Solórzano fue otro de los partidarios que ordenó la eliminación del régimen de "obrajes"puesto que era excesivo para la salud de los indios. Las "Ordenanzas de la minería" rescatan también la valía de los operadores mineros, así como las "Declaraciones de Escobedo", donde se estableció la ventilación en el lugar a explotar y la supervisión adecuada de parte de un guardaminas calificado por algú facultativo de la minería. Tanto estas ordenanzas como otras disposiciones tuvieron su base en el Derecho romano. Finalmente, en los inicios de la República, el químico y primer director general de minería, Mariano Eduardo de Rivero y Ustaríz inspeccionó los centros mineros de Puno y Huancavelica, y dictaminó un decreto como medidas de protección para los obreros expuestos a enfermedades y accidentes ocasionados por el mercurio. Dicho decreto está compuesto por 8 considerandos y 4 artículos y apela a los conciudadanos a cumplir las normas en beneficio, salud y seguridad de los trabajadores mineros.
