The forecasting of floating earth inrush into the working is to a great extent connected with the investigation of the rock mass stressed-deformed state around the working. The aim of such investigations is to estimate the carrier ability of the protective layer (which is stabilized by the physico-chemical mode of fixing) and to determine it's thickness, which is to be sufficient to present the floating earth inrush into the working. We consider the protective layer to have exhausted it's carrier ability if the rocks of this layer reached the overlimit phase of deformation and it's greater part (section), which adjoins the working. is destroyed up to the limit of the remaining strength. So, the aim of investigations is to determine the size of the rocks inelastic deformation zone in the roof of the working. It is necessary to take into account the presence of water saturated seam in the roof and the overlimit characteristics of the rocks, their ability to lower the carrier capacity up to the level of the remaining strength.

O tamanho de grão austenítico prévio é determinante na área de tratamentos térmicos dos aços, pois este parâmetro influencia sua microestrutura e propriedades. Para que o tamanho de grão possa ser medido, é necessário que antes se aplique métodos de contraste para sua revelação. A literatura relata, entre métodos desenvolvidos, dificuldades em se conseguir bons resultados em função deles serem susceptíveis a variações de composição química e histórico de processamento dos aços. Neste contexto, esse trabalho propôs métodos para a revelação dos contornos de grãos austeníticos prévios dos aços ABNT4340 e ABNT1030. Foram utilizadas duas técnicas: ataque químico e ataque térmico. Para a técnica de ataque químico, utilizou-se um reativo a base de ácido pícrico. Já na técnica de ataque térmico, as amostras foram austenitizadas de forma a promover uma oxidação controlada. Os resultados obtidos mostram o sucesso das técnicas, com destaque para o ataque térmico que se mostrou mais efetivo para o objetivo proposto. Foi possível mostrar que no ataque químico, o ajuste da concentração de HCl em função da composição química do aço é o ponto de maior importância, ao passo que no ataque térmico, a segregação química e a temperabilidade dos aços são relevantes para o sucesso da técnica.

The combustible volatile matter in coal mine roadway dusts (CVM) has been determined using x-ray backscatter techniques. The correlation between x-ray and chemical techniques is reasonably good for the 92 samples from collieries on the Bulli seam, and the maximum error expected at the maximum level of 11· 5 weight per cent CVM permitted in the N.S.W. Coal Mines Regulation Act, 1912, as amended, is about ± 2·5 weight per cent. This x-ray technique can be used only when the combustible volatile content of the coal matter (cvm) varies within a limited range, and a separate calibration is required for each coal seam.Portable equipment based on a radioisotope x-ray source ahd digital ratemeter makes possible simple and rapid analysis, and with adaptation to use in coal mines should lead to much more comprehensive testing- ofroadways and hence improved overall prevention of coal dust explosions.

A research programme has been undertaken to evaluate and predict the effect of total extraction of coal by underground methods on the superimposed strata, aquifer systems and ground surface in the Collie Basin. Western Australia. The research work has integrated comprehensive field monitoring of surface and subsurface subsidence with empirical, analytical and physical modelling in an effort to develop an effective predictive tool which can be used in all mining scenarios. Early results indicate that although each method has certain limitations, this approach has enabled the researchers to develop a very good understanding of the subsidence mechanisms from the mine panel through to the surface in the weak, water saturated sediments in the Collie Basin. Given that both subsurface and surface subsidence characteristics have tied in well, greater confidence can be held for predictions made by representative models.

This presentation describes a major modernization project at the Geco concentrator. The objectives of the program were to replace obsolete flotation equipment and upgrade process controls.Noranda Minerals Inc. — Gecc Division is located at Manitouwadge in Northern Ontario. The community is situated north of Lake Superior approximately equidistant from Thunder Bay and Sault Ste. Marie.Milling operations began in September, 1957. The mill processes a complex base metal ore by differential flotation techniques to produce copper, lead and zinc concentrates. To date some 43 million tons have been milled, qualifying Geco as a rather major base metal deposit.II. BACKGROUND:The Geco concentrator was designed and constructed in the mid 50's. A number of features specific to a concentrator of that vintage provided the justification for the modernization efforts described herein.Firstly, the mill was constructed without any instrumentation, not even pneumatic controls. Solid state electronics, computers and related instrumentation were unheard of, or rather primitive by today's standards.Secondly, some of the major equipment, in particular the flotation equipment, did not compare favourably to that in use today. MacIntosh flotation machines (more commonly known as Mac cells) were installed at Geco. These cells were prevalent in a number of concentrators built by Noranda, including Quemont Mining Corporation Limited, Gaspe Copper Mines Limited and Noranda — Horne Division. The Mac cells were used for copper and zinc rougher and scavenger operations. Some units were also installed for a pyrite recovery circuit that was never operated. In total, 104 Mac cells were installed in the main flotation area of the concentrator.

As the mining landscape continues to transform, the challenge of accessing deeper orebodies quickly and safely is becoming a frequent topic of conversation amongst those in the mining industry. The rapid development of underground mine entries to gain earlier access to deeper orebodies is an ever-present challenge to mine owners and contractors. Overcoming this and providing economical solutions to unlock the value in these deeper deposits is a challenge that should be confronted.In 2013, Redpath Australia Pty Ltd (Redpath) commenced construction of what would be the first of two drifts excavated through the use of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) in Queensland’s Bowen Basin.The excavation and development of the two drifts (declines) was completed as part of a contract for underground mining services between Redpath and Anglo American at the Grosvenor Coal Mine Project in Central Queensland, located approximately 5 km north of the town of Moranbah. Having recently completed the drift development, this paper will extend on the early writings of Donnelly, Ramage and Donghi (2014) and provide detail on the operational achievements, advance rates, threats, opportunities and learnings during the excavation of the two declines: the conveyor (CV) drift and the transport (M&M) drift.CITATION:Ramage, G, Donghi, M and Barnes, A, 2016. Mineral exploration and mining in New Zealand has had almost five years of new legislation. The requirement for different consents is a challenging, time consuming, expensive exercise but in most cases the new procedure is working, although the matter of obtaining access to land is still a major issue. Priority is critical. After lodgment of an application for a minerals permit there are many other matters to address such as identifying land owners, occupiers and administrators, preparation of access applications, consultation and preparation of various resource consent applications.

"In preparation for the milling of a new nickel and copper mine ore, Nickel Rim South, Xstrata’s Strathcona Mill is undertaking numerous process improvement projects. Within the grinding circuit, several projects are under development and an automated grinding control strategy, consistent with the operating objectives, was identified as a key requirement. The grinding strategy is to maximize the throughput (quantitative objective) while maintaining the cyclone overflow within specifications (qualitative objective).This paper describes the implementation of a robust grinding control strategy using the existing control system. The implemented controls maintain the cyclone overflow density at the desired target, while continually optimising the rod mill feed rate to allow maximum throughput. This approach has the added benefit of improving the stability of the rougher flotation circuit down stream of the grinding and improving energy efficiency of the rod and primary ball mills. This paper discusses the comparison of the before and after the implementation of results.INTRODUCTIONThe grinding process is a size reduction operation used in the mining industry to liberate the valuable minerals from the gangue. Grinding is one of the most important and expensive processes in a concentrator (Xi-song, 2007; Pomerleau 2000; Najim 1995), often accounting for around half of the total operating costs in base metal concentrators (Wills, 1990), which has led to a focus on development and implementation of control and optimisation strategies. The grinding process prepares the ore for the subsequent concentration step, which for sulphide base metal operations, is predominantly flotation. The performance of the concentration (flotation) is very much determined by the feed characteristics of the slurry coming from grinding. The valuable minerals recovery process in flotation is very much influenced by the grinding process and the liberation of the desired minerals from the gangue minerals (McIvor, 1991).The true objective of grinding is to obtain a proper liberation of the minerals as defined by a particle size distribution referenced typically by d80 (80% passing size of product). Besides achieving the desired mineral d80 size, it is clearly desirable to produce as narrow a size distribution as possible to squeeze the maximum amount of the mineral value into the highest recovery region (McIvor, 1991). This is an important criterion for the mill in economically optimizing the grade and recovery for the concentrate product. It is important not to over or under grind, while keeping the specific comminution energy as low as possible (Nunez, 2005) to achieve the target liberation. In other words, maintain an optimal throughput depending on the ore conditions to the capacity of the grinding mills, while providing the flotation process with a constant and narrow size distribution, at a cut size selected to meet the metallurgical requirements (Bascur, 1991)."

Controlling noise has proven difficult in mining, and noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) remains common. In 2008, a South African Mine Health and Safety Council study focused on small- to medium-sized mines in relation to the milestones set by the industry to prevent NIHL. An evaluation of the compliance of ten diamond, sand, aggregate and Ready mix concrete mines and production sites with standards, legislation and best practice guidelines relating to NIHL prevention was conducted, using a noise compliance audit tool. The findings indicated that all mines surveyed had poor compliance with the international standards, compliance with International Standards Organization standards being the poorest. There was a clear distinction between the small and the medium-sized mines in their compliance with local standards and legislation (ranging from 14 per cent to 66 per cent). The areas of best compliance were audiology and medical examinations. The lower-than-expected compliance was largely attributable to shortcomings in hearing conservation programmes for occupational noise. Initiation of remedial practices in the small- to medium-scale mining sector to facilitate improvements in NIHL prevention and compliance with standards and legislation is recommended. Kennecott Utah Copper adopted Outokumpu Flash Smelting and Kennecott-Outokumpu Flash Converting in 1995, a process based on granulating high grade copper matte. While nickel mattes and very small quantities of copper matte had been commercially granulated for years, no large scale copper matte granulation system had been built. This paper summarizes the history and benefits of copper matte granulation, the Kennecott design basis, the successful operation for over 10 years and potential problems inherent in some matte granulation approaches.

This report chronicles the historical development of longwall mining in the United States and speculates on future developments to the turn of the century. Five eras of technological development during the modern period are described and analyzed. These eras discuss the development of (1) mechanized extraction, (2) self advancing roof supports, (3) high capacity roof supports, (4) shield supports, and (5) system automation. Current trends are analyzed in terms of: longwall utilization, production capability, support capacity, face widths, and new technological developments. From these analyses, the future of longwall mining to the year 2000 is speculated. It is concluded that longwall mining will continue to grow in importance during the next decade and that the next major technological milestone will be the realization of a fully automated longwall mining system.

The mineralogy and textures of a portion oC ore from the 25 level northern orebody, North mine, Broken Hill are described. This ore, in places, contains up to 70 per cent cubanite (CuFe2S3 ) which has crystallized directly with other sulphides and associated gangue minerals.Several breakdown reactions involving the cubanite are also considered.

Este estudo teve como objetivo investigar o efeito da substituição da dolomita por magnesita como fonte de MgO no processo de sinterização. Em testes realizados em escala piloto, observou-se que a utilização de magnesita eleva a resistência mecânica do sínter. A diferença de resistência foi decorrente da formação de uma solução sólida entre magnésio e ferro durante a sinterização. No caso da dolomita, que é fonte tanto de cálcio quanto de magnésio, a solução sólida Mg-Fe promove o encapsulamento do cálcio no seu interior, o que dificulta a formação das fases mineralógicas que promovem o endurecimento do sínter. Assim, a participação do cálcio na formação das fases ligantes é inibida, limitando a resistência mecânica obtida. A magnesita, por sua vez, não apresenta cálcio em sua constituição, sendo esse elemento adicionado via calcário. Dessa forma, o efeito do encapsulamento do cálcio não ocorre, havendo grande disponibilidade desse elemento para a formação de fases ligantes, permitindo a obtenção de níveis mais elevados de resistência mecânica do sínter. Portanto, a substituição da dolomita pela magnesita mostrou-se viável, desde que a granulometria seja similar à da dolomita, com grande potencial de melhora produtiva da sinterização industrial.

Based on fundamental process performance objectives, a standard system for base-level control of most ball mill installations is presented. This system is simple, inexpensive, and provides the major economic benefits available from contemporary automatic control technology.Value Analysis of Grinding OperationsValue analysis (or engineering, or management), originally developed by Lawrence D. Miles of the General Electric Company (1), focuses on the identification of value (product or process worth versus cost) and provides a systematic procedure for its improvement. A recent research and development project involving the application of the principles of value engineering to grinding operations has provided a basic technoeconomic model of grinding processes (2). The functional objectives of the ball milling process and the means to achieve value based grinding circuit control originate from this study.The Need for Grinding Circuit ControlThe economic effectiveness of a process is determined by the quality or value of the product and the related processing costs. If the inputs (both the raw feed and the applied processing work) are absolutely constant, the product characteristics and the process efficiency will be determined only by the engineering design. To improve the understanding of the support interaction mechanics between grouted bolts and coal mine roofs and to help lay the foundations for improved design and evaluation techniques, the 0.8. Bureau of Mines has conducted laboratory, field, and analytical studies of the load transfer mechanics of grouted roof bolts. Mechanisms by which load is transferred from a bolt through the grout to the rock mass are analyzed. Strain gauges were installed on over 70 bolts and tested to observe the rate of load transfer when a force was applied at the bolt head. Laboratory and field tests were conducted to determine bolt-grout- rock interaction behavior in both the elastic and postyield phases. Long-term laboratory tests were run to determine the time-dependent properties of both polyester resin- and-gypsum-grouted bolts. Numerical studies using finite- element techniques were compared to the experimental results. Elastic tests showed that 90 pct of the applied load was transferred within 24 in of bolt length. Long-term tests indicated that creep is more significant in gypsum-grouted bolts than in resin- grouted bolts. Plastic studies showed that yielding of steel will translate down the length of the bolt from 6 to 20 in.

Em coquerias, o período compreendido entre o início de operação até a desativação devido final de vida útil é relativamente longo. Torna-se tarefa muito difícil determinar-se o tempo exato de desativação por degradação uma vez que as coquerias possuem muitos fornos tipo batelada e o grau individual de degradação varia de acordo com as condições operacionais e método de preservação aplicados. Apesar dos cuidados adotados na operação e manutenção das coquerias, torna-se inevitável um desgaste inexorável em suas estruturas com o passar dos anos, com progressivo decréscimo na capacidade eficaz de produção até a sua paralisação. Tendo em vista o elevado custo envolvido na construção de novas coquerias, torna-se prioridade para as siderúrgicas prolongarem ao máximo a vida útil das baterias existentes, adotando o tipo de reparo adequado a cada fase da vida da bateria. O presente trabalho tem o objetivo de descrever os tipos de reparo em baterias de coque disponíveis, visando restaurar as estruturas e recuperar a capacidade produtiva das coquerias, respeitando as normas ambientais vigentes.

La voladura es un procedimiento que está diseñado para obtener pilas a través de una fragmentación adecuada para el carguío y transporte, aumentando así la productividad de las palas y camiones y asegurando la estabilidad de los taludes y condiciones del piso de los bancos en la mina. Asimismo, el diseño de la voladura debe optimizar las operaciones posteriores tales como chancado, zarandas, clasificación, molienda, flotación y lixiviación. En ese sentido, el presente texto describe la metodología de optimización de procesos de la miina Antamina hasta la oncentradora a través de la recolección de datos de campo, caracterización, modelación matemática y simulación de las operaciones, donde además se utilizan sistemas de rastreamento de minerales y de análisis continuo de imágenes.

Dado que en los últimos quince años se buscó mejorar el stándard de vida de la población latinoamericana, a través no solo de su economía sino de su salud propiamente dicha, es necesario que América Latina repare en el ambiente de la comunidad que vive el trabajador como los demás habitantes. Por tal motivo, el objetivo del texto radica en una evaluación de los riesgos del ambiente del trabajador, como en la legislación social, que suele enfatizar más en la indemnización que en la prevención del mismo. Asimismo, se revisan los 13 trabajos realizados en diversos paises de Latinoamérica, encontrándose que solo 5 tienen un programa efectivo en salud ocupacional. En este sentido, los objetivos del programa de salud ocupacional son importantes puesto que un ambiente de trabajo seguro y saludable donde los empleados cuenten con una salud óptima en la producción industrial, beneficiará a la comunidad y la industria minera, respectivamente.
