Flame retardant materials can be incorporated or applied to products, including plastics and textiles, to increase their resistance to fire. Incorporating a flame retardant in combustible materials and plastics is a common procedure to reduce the risk of fires. Flame retardant applications include interior and exterior woods, structural steel columns, fabrics, open and closed cell foam, pressure treated wood, Formica and all types of fabrics for use in commercial applications as well as residential applications where their fire protection products can save lives and valuables. Huntite and hydromagnesite are amongst the most important flame retardant additives materials. Although various areas of the world have potential huntite and hydromagnesite deposits, their place in industry is not well known, and a detailed field search for their deposits has not yet been conducted. They are active during the starting phase of a fire, in that they prevent the spread of an inner or exterior source of ignition to the flame-retarded material, thereby, preventing, delaying or inhibiting the spread of a fire. Flame-retardants are, therefore, just one element among many in a concept for preventive fire safety. To obtain huntite and hydromagnesite concentrates that are more than 95% pure, which are used in flame retardant industry, flotation tests were conducted on low-quality huntite and hydromagnesite ores.

O estudo da composição mássica de cerâmicas vermelhas é de extrema importância para a produção de peças com propriedades tecnológicas aceitáveis. Nesse contexto esse trabalho tem por objetivo determinar as propriedades tecnológicas de cerâmica vermelha para fabricação de blocos de vedação. Dois tipos de argila foram usados, argila forte e fraca, para a confecção dos corpos de prova que foram moldados por prensagem uniaxial. Após essa etapa foram determinadas a absorção de água e a resistência em flexão. Os resultados mostraram que a massa composta por 50% de argila forte e 50% de argila fraca apresentaram os melhores resultados de resistência à flexão. Assim, o estudo mostrou que todas as massas estudadas atendem aos requisitos mínimos exigidos por norma e que a massa composta pela mistura das argilas apresentou o melhor desempenho mecânico tecnológico.

Laboratory data for 155 field muds and 77 .shales have been used to develop correlations to estimate the net streaming potential component of the SP. Analysis of these data and comparison with field tests show that streaming potential corrections must be made to obtain an accurate estimate of the electrochemical potential for use in the determinntion of formation water resi-iiviy. The self-potential curve is related to formation water resistivity, and considerable effort within the oil industry has been directed toward clarifying this relationship. The Schlumbergers and Leonardon1,2 recognized that two types of potentials, electrochemical and electro-kinetic, resulted in the net potential variation in the borehole. Most of the later papers have dealt with the electrochemical component and its controlling parameters. The investigations of Wyllie,2" Salisch' and Moore5 provide the most extensive sources of data on streaming potentials across mud cakes. These authors observed streaming potentials of sufficient magnitude to be of critical importance in SP interpretation, if it is assumed that streaming potentials develop only opposite permeable beds. Streaming potentials across shales have been reported by Schenck and by Gondouin, et al.7 Since SP magnitude is the difference in potential opposite shale and sand beds, these authors suggested that the net streaming potential component may be negligible. The present investigation was initiated to evaluate empirically some of the parameters controlling the magnitude of the net borehole streaming potential and to determine whether useful relations between mud properties and net streaming potential could be established. Field muds were used in this investigation. These muds were characterized by the amount and type of chemical treatment utilized for five days before Sampling. Filter loss, mud resistivity, mud density and filtrate resistivity were determined for each mud with conventional methods and apparatus. Mud filtrate pH was estimated with Hydrion pH paper for the appropriate range. Streaming PotentIals Across MuD Cakes Commercial calomel-saturated KC1 electrodes are subject to potential changes attributed to contamination of the very small fiber-tip bridge by particles of clay from the drilling mud.3 To minimize this difficulty, a large diameter bridge (Fig. 1) was constructed with saturated KC1-agar gel and a filter disc of microporous porcelain. In recent years observational techniques of tunneling have become increasingly popular methods to facilitate complex underground infrastructure projects. The traditional design and construction management practices developed in Europe have been adapted for application in North America to suit a more restrictive management and legal culture. This paper will discuss three recent projects, the San Diego Mission Valley East Extension, Washington Dulles International Airport People Mover, and the Seattle Beacon Hill Station and Tunnels, with the objective of identifying the challenges of applying observational tunneling methods to established contractual practices in North America.

With access to the World Wide Web, many resources are readily available for improving claim reports. With a little time spent on line, a more thorough report can be created. Claimants will accept the conclusions of a report more readily when they can view support information on their own computer, particularly when the support information is not just from blasting related web sites. Some suggested resources are discussed including aerial pictures, local tax maps, topographical maps and home repair web sites. This paper provides suggestions for tracking down support information on the web and information on how to properly reference this information. Case studies of several claim investigations are presented. These are some examples of how a little time spent online provided clear and convincing evidence to support the conclusions of the investigation.

O presente trabalho busca apresentar o desenvolvimento, as diferenças e os resultados dos testes de flotação em bancada em circuito fechado (locked cycle test - LCT), desenvolvidos para avaliar o circuito industrial do projeto Morro do Pilar da Manabi que foi projetado para processar um itabirito com 30% de teor de ferro. Para buscar a máxima eficiência na recuperação de ferro a rota de processo desenvolvida prevê a flotação em duas estreitas faixas de tamanho: a faixa -0,15+0,044mm será processada em células mecânicas e a fração -0,044mm em colunas de flotação. Por se tratar de um minério de baixo teor, houve a necessidade de desenvolver um teste de bancada, preciso e robusto, para avaliar o desempenho do itabirito no circuito industrial projetado, composto por etapas de flotação rougher, cleaner, recleaner e scavenger. O teste em circuito fechado desenvolvido apresentou excelentes resultados, coerentes com o desempenho de testes piloto contínuos feitos com o mesmo itabirito pobre.

As curvas limite de conformação (CLC) são utilizadas há mais de 50 anos. Propostas inicialmente para o desenvolvimento de produtos provenientes da indústria automobilística, em função das necessidades apresentadas pela indústria de estampagem elas são aplicadas atualmente de maneira geral na produção de inúmeros tipos de peças, oferecendo previsões de possíveis falhas e/ou defeitos durante as etapas do processo de estampagem. As CLC´s permitem prever o afinamento excessivo, enrugamento, estiramento e é claro, a fratura da peça. A raiz da curva limite de conformação (CLC0) é considerada como a mínima deformação obtida pela curva, ou seja, a obtenção de deformações superiores pode levar a peça a falha. As ligas de latão compostas por cobre e zinco, são utilizadas em inúmeras aplicações que necessitam de excelente estampabilidade, como o repuxo profundo, objetivado na fabricação de projéteis. Desta forma, torna-se interessante o entendimento da CLC ou CLC0 para liga de latão em estudo. A obtenção da CLC0 através de ensaios de tração uniaxial no plano da chapa pode ser realizada de acordo com corpos de prova de formatos específicos, como os propostos por Björklund e Nilsson (2014), IRSID (1975) e Wagoner (1980 e 1981). Concluiu-se que o corpo de prova proposto pelo IRSID (1975) é o que melhor se apresentou na determinação das deformações e1 x e2 e com rompimentos dos corpos de prova na região central.

Dado que el método de minado empleado por la compañía Perúbar en la mina Juanita generaba ciertos riesgos de inestabilidad y dificultades operacionales, se propuso un nuevo método de explotación de minado: el de corte y relleno mecanizado por subniveles, cuyo sistema está clasificado como un método de explotación especial y de alta recuperación del yacimiento. En este sentido, el presente texto describe los beneficios de este nuevo método -en tanto ofrece una resistencia de relleno cementado en la masa rocante, así como la estabilidad de los materiales en el relleno hidráulico de los tajeos secundarios.

Long tendon support systems provide several challenges when used in-cycle as part of the secondary or primary support cycle. A two-component pumpable resin, Carbothix, has been in development for use with self-drilling rock bolts, but many of the attributes of this new resin system make it ideal for grouting long tendon support systems. While neat Portland cement grouts or polyester resin capsules have been used with long tendon support systems for many years, two-component pumpable resin systems overcome many of the shortcomings in these systems. The two-component systems dramatically improve the set-time to enable mining face advance with fewer delays, enable longer pumping distances, improve quality control, and enhance load transfer mechanisms. This paper describes the key benefits associated with a new pumpable resin and details the Australian Department of Mines and Petroleum department atmospheric testing results and cable load testing completed by Minova personnel to date. It also details the results of the Australian mine site trials and the introduction of these systems into production use.

"The problem of recovering potash from the mineral polyhalite (K2SO4.MgSO4.2CaSO4.2H2O), occurring in large quantities in the salt beds of Texas and New Mexico, has been under investigation at the Nonmetallic Minerals Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines continuously since 1928. Most of the results previously obtained have been published in technical journals and in a series of Bureau of Mines Reports of Investigations.The experiments described in the present report were performed to ascertain whether a continuous countercurrent extraction of calcined polyhalite by hot water would yield satisfactory recoveries and concentrations of sium sulphate in the top liquor. Previous investigation by Storch 4 had shown that the rate of solution of uncalcined polyhalite was too slow to be of value in an industrial process, and Storch and Clarke 5 had demonstrated that calcination of the polyhalite greatly, accelerated the rate of solution in hot water, allowing most of the potassium sulphate to be readily extracted."

Drilling slurry has become an effective aid to the construction of drilled shafts in caving and/or waterbearing soils. Historically, drilling slurry made of bentonitic clay and water was first used in the US in water well drilling as early as 1889. In coastal Texas drilled shaft contractors began using slurry, often made of on-site clay mixed with potable water, in the years following World War II, on a relatively routine basis. This type of slurry was used to "process" boreholes, in which the borehole was drilled "in the dry" until water or unstable soil was encountered, after which water and on-site clay were introduced into the borehole and mixed in place with the auger or other drilling tool. Drilling then continued under a slurry consisting of the uncontrolled mixture of clay and water until the excavation had reached a relatively impermeable and cohesive material. At this point, a steel casing was dropped into the hole and sealed into the lower stratum of impermeable geomaterial (soil or rock). The slurry inside the casing was bailed or pumped out, drilling continued to plan depth in the dry, a reinforcing cage was set in the partially cased borehole, concrete was placed and the casing was withdrawn. Some soil-slurry was undoubtedly trapped between the casing and the borehole wall, but the quality of that slurry was usually of no concern, because engineers of the period usually viewed drilled shafts as nothing more than deeply buried footings. Any unejected slurry would only serve to lower side shearing resistance, not yet considered in design, but would have no effect on end bearing. An ignition detection and suppression system was developed under the scope of this contract. The objective of this machine mounted system was to detect flames caused by frictional sparking from the cutting bits of a continuous mining machine and to suppress it with sufficient speed to prevent the development of an explosion, and to keep the flame from harming the machine operator.

The seismicity of the Witwatersrand Basin and Bushveld Complex has been analysed, revealing significant differences in source and damage mechanisms. A comparison of mining taking place at similar depths and extraction ratios indicates that the seismic energy release rate is considerably lower in the Bushveld Complex. Technologies introduced in the past decade to manage the risk of rockbursting are reviewed and assessed. These include geophysical methods to detect hazardous structures ahead of mining, new mining layouts and support systems, and the mechanization of in-stope processes. Despite important differences in geology, in situ stress, mining layouts and methods, there are many opportunities for the reciprocal transfer of knowledge, experience and technology between the gold and platinum mining sectors to improve the management of the rockburst risk.

Extraction of minerals can be achieved by a variety of technologies; one of them is ion exchange. There are several ion exchange configurations and mechanical set-ups available, but only one technology will provide more process performance and flexibility compared to the other. The multiple column Continuous Countercurrent Ion Exchange (CCIX) technology provides the highest form of process flexibility with also the highest mineral recovery feasible through ion exchange. In comparison with a fixed bed system, the PuriTech CCIX system offers the benefits of continuous counter-current contact mode. This way the resin capacity is fully exploited leading to reduction in resin inventory and, at the same time, in chemicals and water consumption, and product dilution. For any set of operating conditions the mass transfer zone has a characteristic length (MTZL). The MTZL can be expressed in duration, column length, or volume, but is the measure of the quantity of resin in the system that is doing "work" at any given moment in the process. The objective of continuous ion exchange processing is to eliminate all resin volume from the process equipment that is not within a mass transfer zone. In most commercial ion exchange processes for the recovery of metals, CCIX engineering can eliminate as much as 20 - 80 % of the ion exchange resin inventory. Consumptions of water and chemicals are typically brought down around 40% or more. For each type of resin the selectivity/affinity towards a particular metal depends on the basic process conditions such as pH, concentrations of other competing metals in solution. By changing the pH in the ion exchange process phase, the selectivity of the resin can be changed. By doing this, a split elution, or extraction of metals separately can be achieved and the effect of other competing metals (cross-contamination) can be reduced. For example the DOW resin XUS43578 is commonly used for the recovery of copper or nickel/cobalt separation.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo o estudo de matérias-primas utilizadas nas indústrias de cerâmica vermelha da Região do Cariri-Ce, de forma a adequar o processamento às especificações de composição, umidade e temperatura para obtenção de componentes com qualidade e características satisfatórias. Para tal, foi realizada a análise de composição através de FRX, limites de Atterberg, retração linear, absorção de água e tensão de ruptura à flexão, pós queima, em três temperaturas distintas. Pode-se observar que algumas argilas apresentaram composições típicas das utilizadas para a fabricação de produtos da cerâmica vermelha, aumento de tensão de ruptura e retração com a temperatura de queima, redução da absorção com o aumento da temperatura de queima e a penas as amostras AM e BP encontraram-se no intervalo de extrusão satisfatória.

No setor de trocadores de calor para refrigeração industrial e câmaras frias o maior desafio é a corrosão do equipamento quando exposto a intempéries. Esta situação em regiões litorâneas é agravada devido ao ataque de sal e ácidos provenientes da atmosfera. Diante disto este mercado sempre procura um aumento na resistência dos componentes das unidades evaporadoras. Neste contexto as aletas, que são feitas utilizando folha de alumínio com revestimento epóxi orgânico dourado, tem papel de grande importância. O presente trabalho visa entender os mecanismos de corrosão da folha nos principais fatores, tais quais, liga, têmpera e revestimento em relação a resistência a corrosão em áreas litorâneas. Os materiais escolhidos foram as ligas 8006 e 8079, na tempera O e com revestimentos base Epóxi e Poliéster. As amostras foram ensaiadas no laboratório utilizando ensaios de corrosão salina e acida que simulam as condições encontradas.

"Efficient use of land is constantly requiring more underground construction. Minimized execution time and disturbance to surroundings and nearby structures are essential benefits for all construction techniques. To meet the demands of a modern construction project, suppliers have to be able to provide high-quality and tailor-made products just on time. RD pile wall is a retaining wall based on drilled steel pipe piles which are connected to each other with special interlocking profiles. RD pile wall is a solution which enables penetration of overburden soil, dense fill layers including stones and boulders, and embedding into the bedrock in one single operation. Several test installations and laboratory tests have been made to develop the system and to test and improve the water tightness of the wall. Beside these tests, RD pile wall has also proven its reliability in almost 70 projects. Largest project so far has been Pasila Tripla project in Helsinki, Finland. A permanent retaining wall with surface area of 18,000 m2 (193,750 ft2), excavation depth of 21 m (68 ft) and over 17 m (56 ft) of water pressure was made with 711 mm (28”) and 406.4 mm (16”) pile sizes. Piles were delivered to site in one piece with lengths up to 33.5 m (110 ft).INTRODUCTIONExcavations in cramped city centers and in between of existing buildings and other structures are facing more and more challenges. Installation of sheet pile walls is often problematic or even impossible due to obstacles in ground from old structures and due to demand to extend the excavations to even deeper and harder soil layers. Also installations of secant pile walls are facing difficulties due to cramped construction sites and constantly tightening execution times.On the other hand, an efficient and reliable piling technique suitable for the demanding soil conditions described above, percussion drilling, has been developed since the 1960’s, and especially from the mid- 1990’s, when the concentric drilling method with the ring bit and pilot was introduced. A new retaining wall application, the RD pile wall, was developed by combining that drilling method with the widely used retaining wall solution based on steel pipe piles and welded interlocks (a pipe pile wall normally installed with vibratory or impact hammers).PRINCIPLE AND MAIN BENEFITS OF THE METHODRD pile walls can be used in all soil conditions. Most beneficial the system is in extremely demanding soil conditions where the installation of traditional retaining walls is challenging or even impossible. The RD pile wall is a combination of drilled steel pipe piles and interlocking sections as shown in Fig. 1.Individual RD piles are connected to each other with interlocks welded to the piles on the automated welding line at the workshop. The matching dimensions of the drilling system and interlocking sections allow the installation of RD piles through stones and boulders and even into the bedrock, if necessary, in a single operation. Installation is done by a down-the-hole (DTH) hammer using the centric drilling system and oversized ring bits or a drilling system consisting of a pilot bit and reamer wings shown in Fig. 2."

The Camp Dresser & McKee (CDM) has been retained by the Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District (SRCSD) to design the Mather Interceptor, a portion of the South Interceptor and Mather Interceptor program. The Mather Interceptor consists of 14,667 feet of 54 to 72 inch gravity interceptor. Approximately 90 percent of the alignment will be constructed via tunneling. Cobbles and boulders in a sand/gravel matrix dominate the ground conditions combined with seasonal perched groundwater table at some of the deeper reaches of the alignment, impacting design consideration. This paper will present the results of a comprehensive geotechnical investigation conducted for this project and in-depth technical evaluation of various trenchless techniques feasible for tunneling in the cobble and boulder laden formations of this project. This paper will also present the risks and issues of the design alternatives and selection criteria.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi desenvolver um suporte cerâmico apropriado para a soldagem unilateral de liga de alumínio, utilizando a cordierita, uma vítria cerâmica constituída de óxidos. Trata-se de uma proposta tecnológica que viabiliza a produtividade da operação de soldagem, mantendo-se inalterada a qualidade da junta soldada ampliando os conhecimentos relacionados aos suportes cerâmicos focando a redução dos custos de fabricação.A soldagem unilateral com este tipo de suporte de solda foi executada em chapas de alumínio com arame de solda de alumínio 4043 pelo processo Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW). A eficiência do suporte cerâmico em suportar o metal de solda líquido foi verificada durante a soldagem do passe de raiz. Várias soldas foram executadas em chapas com espessura de 6,35mm para testar a eficiência do suporte. Parâmetros e variáveis do processo foram estudadas: a abertura de raiz, a tensão, a corrente e a energia de soldagem. Os resultados mostraram que o suporte foi eficiente para suportar a poça de solda líquida. Foi possível estimar uma faixa de operação do processo, com abertura de raiz de 2,0 a 6,0 mm e a energia de soldagem calculada ficou entre 0,62 e 1,46 kJ/mm. A soldagem foi realizada com mecanismo para facilitar a saída do arame de alumínio (tocha Push-Pull) sendo soldado puxando, da esquerda para direita, com pequena oscilação lateral em relação ao cordão de solda. As macrografias das juntas soldadas, além de revelar boa penetração lateral (entre 2 a 4,5mm) e reforço de solda com até 2,1mm de altura, pôde revelar ausência de descontinuidades como: trincas, falta de fusão, inclusão de escórias e porosidades.
