"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Com¬mittee of the Coordinating Research Council (CFC) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36. 4/ Further re¬ports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.4/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of l941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed. The present report presents analytical data for 3,011 samples, representing the products of 113 companies. Most of the samples represented in this report were obtained during July and August 1946. As in previous surveys the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 1,585 samples, 311 items, and 99 -brands; premium-price, 1,422 samples, 280 items, and 94 brands; third-grade, 4 samples, 4 items, and 4 brands. A utilização de materiais cerâmicos em componentes que operam em elevadas temperaturas (p. ex.: trocadores de calor cerâmicos que operam acima de 800°C) é vantajosa do ponto de vista térmico, mas não é trivial em termos estruturais, uma vez que estes materiais são frágeis e portanto, suscetíveis à fratura catastrófica. Considerando a necessidade de materiais resistentes a elevadas temperaturas e que garantam a integridade de aplicações como tais trocadores de calor, este trabalho investiga as propriedades mecânicas da alumina a (Al2O3) como função da temperatura na faixa de 23°C a 850°C. Para tal, cem ensaios de flexão em 4 pontos e ensaios adicionais selecionados em 3 pontos foram realizados em amostras de seção transversal retangular de ~ 45 mm2 produzidas por gelcasting, técnica esta que tem grande potencial para moldar peças de geometria complexa. Os ensaios foram conduzidos empregando um dispositivo fabricado em Inconel (superliga de Níquel-Cromo) especialmente desenvolvido para esta finalidade e contendo articulações objetivando autocompensação de desalinhamentos. Os resultados experimentais puderam ser muito bem descritos usando a estatística biparamétrica de Weibull e demonstram o efeito da temperatura na redução da resistência à flexão. Adicionalmente, o dispositivo proposto facilitou e dinamizou a realização dos ensaios, além de garantir pequena dispersão das propriedades mecânicas obtidas, especialmente se considerado o micromecanismo frágil de fraturamento desta classe de materiais.

Mineral resource evaluation requires defining geological domains that differentiate the types of mineralogy, alteration and lithology. Usual practice is to consider the domain boundaries as hard, i.e. data from across the boundaries are disregarded when estimating the grades within a given domain. This practice may hinder the quality of the estimates when a significant spatial correlation of the grades exists across the domain boundaries. In this paper, several geostatistical methodologies to handle soft geological boundaries are compared through a case study on a copper mine in Chile. The estimation methods considered are: ordinary kriging using hard boundaries between geological domains; ordinary kriging omitting the geological boundaries; traditional and standardized ordinary cokriging of the grades assayed in different domains; ordinary kriging within dilated geological domains, that is, incorporating samples from adjacent domains up to a given radius from the boundary of the domain being considered. The estimations are performed using a set of exploration data (drill hole samples) and are validated using a set of production data (blast hole samples collected for grade control). Results indicate that kriging with dilated domains performs better than ordinary kriging using hard boundaries or no boundaries and better than the ordinary cokriging approaches. It therefore appears as a simple alternative to global kriging (without considering the geological domains) and allows accounting for changes in the grade average, dispersion and spatial continuity with the geological characteristics of the deposit, via the use of grade variograms proper to each geological domain. The maximal distance for searching samples from adjacent domains should be chosen according to the spatial correlation of the grades across the domain boundaries, or via a cross-validation at an early stage of the mine or a jack-knife if production data are available. The Bureau of Mines examined the Bear Canyon RARE II area in 1982. The area has no identified mineral deposits. The few claims that were located in the study area are devoid of any workings. No concentrations of economic minerals were found in the samples taken. There are no mineral, geothermal, or oil and gas leases in the area; the nearest oil well is 10 mi (16 km) east. The nearest mining operation was the Ruby Gold Placer worked in 1914, 7 mi (11 km) southeast (Hart, 1966, p. 45); the Pliocene Paso Robles Formation which contained the gold does not extend into the area. SETTING The Bear Canyon RARE II area covers 19.7 sq mi (51 sq km) or 12,600 acres (1500 ha) in west-central California. It lies in the Santa Lucia Range 10 mi (16 km) southwest of King City and adjoins the southeast side of the Ventana Wilderness. It is 10 mi (16 km) from the Pacific Ocean. Primary access is by the San Antonio River road on the Hunter Liggett Military Reservation, which parallels the area's southern border. Further access to the area's interior is by jeep and foot trails.

Em 2014 houve necessidade de substituição precoce de Caixas de refrigeração no Alto Forno devido a vazamentos provocados por defeitos de fundição ocasionando perda de produção. Após análise das falhas no componente, a oficina de fundição da ArcelorMittal Tubarão na busca contínua pela excelência na qualidade de seus produtos, propôs o desenvolvimento de um novo projeto de fundição visando atingimento de nível radiográfico = 3 nas caixas de refrigeração conforme critério de aceitação estabelecido na Norma ASTM E272. Para atingir o objetivo proposto foram inseridos no novo projeto itens para melhorar o processo de alimentação e solidificação do metal. Como resultado o novo projeto apresentou melhora significativa na qualidade do componente do sistema de insuflação de ar do Alto Forno atingindo níveis radiográficos que atendam as exigências da Norma.

Tables of 28 positions for all the transitions for nine common analyzing crystals for first, second, and third order reflections were compiled by the Bureau of Mines to facilitate elemental X-ray fluorescence analysis on multi-element systems. The tables are based on a compatible set of wavelengths for 2,346 observed X-ray transitions of the elements lithium to americium. The results are tabulated in order of increasing wavelength as well as by increasing wavelength for each element.

This paper presents the specific features of the large-scale production and transportation systems (LSPTS), describing the main notions and characteristics of the LSPTS elements. A methodologically unitary approach of the formulation, formalization and solution of the problems regarding the planning of the LSPTS structure development is offered, based on the system description by the aggregation-decomposition method, as weil as on the complex of interreloted models for the planning optimization. The paper describes the characteristics of the complex of dynamic models for investments, utilized in solving the planning problems of the LSPTS structure development.

The Gordonsville Operation of Pasminco US Inc. along with the Center for Advanced Mineral and Metallurgical Processing (CAMP) at Montana Tech studied, developed and implemented a pilot-scale hydrometallurgical facility for the industrial recovery of germanium and gallium. This paper describes the joint testing and engineering programme that culminated in this successful process.

Os principais testes laboratoriais para obtenção de propriedades de escoamento dos materiais serão descritos. Os testes necessitam de pequenas quantidades de amostras representativas do material e os parâmetros levantados alimentam a metodologia de análise de escoamento de sólidos ou softwares de simulação numérica, e são essenciais para a correção de equipamentos defeituosos ou dimensionamento de novos equipamentos.

In the past the blast-furnace industry was under the stigma of being one of the most prolific sources of killed or seriously inj ured and permanently disabled workmen of any of the industries of the country. In the popular mind, labor at blast furnaces was little less hazardous than mining, powder making, or railroad work. This impression wasbased not so much on definite knowledge of the number actnally injured and the causes of injury as on the spectacular nature of the accidents that from time to time were described in the press. As with a mine disaster or a railroad wreck so with many furnace accidents, the number fatally injured in such accidents constitutes only a minor proportion of the workmen who suffer more or less serious injuries. However, the reader of the daily paper receives a distinct impression-of frightful and sudden disaster which is apt to be associated henceforth in his mind with work at blast furnaces. It is true that in the past this impression has not been without warrant, for from the time of the advent of Mesabi ores, taller furnaces, and faster smelting, which begain in the early nineties, the newspapers have chronicled a large number of blastfurnace disasters. Blast-furnace men have never assumed to tolerate failures in construction or defective control of furnaces. But the admitted hazards of the work are many, and the slow development of improvements in the construction and control of the furnace and its auxiliaries have occasionally given rise to a tendency to accept as a part of the day's work not only the unforeseen and difficultly controlled accidents but accidents whose recurrence might be stopped by the adoption of suitable preventive measures. In the smelting of iron, even more than in many other industries, safety is inseparably related to efficiency in production, and. the accidents strictly incident to work about the furnace are proportional in some degree to the success with which obstacles to smooth working are overcome. This relation does not hold, however, in regard .to such accidents as are incident to hand labor, falls, falling and flying objects, machinery, and the use of hand tools.

Globalization creates investment opportunities for enterprises around the world. Attracting foreign investment has been a key challenge for economic growth in developing countries. Corruption, political instability, armed conflict, and other internal problems affect foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows negatively. A framework of criteria provides a basis for comparing non-commercial risk (NCR) among twenty-three mineral economies. Countries competing for foreign direct investment inflows are ranked from least to most risky. This study compares Inward FDI Performance Index (IND) with NCR ratings in developing countries and shows that risk is increasingly mitigated by means of appropriately structured insurance. Given the option for countries with similar mineral potential, investors will generally invest in the country that offers lower non-commercial risk. This paper reports hardness and abrasive wear resistance test results from a wide range of WC-Co alloys, varying in cobalt content as well as WC grain size. The results show that the abrasive wear resistance increases with increasing hardness and that the rate of increase is higher for larger WC grain sizes. The increase in abrasive wear resistance was found to be parabolic up to a critical hardness value and exponential above that value. The transition from parabolic to exponential behaviour was found to occur at the same contiguity value for all grain sizes, which suggests that at that contiguity value the WC skeleton becomes continuous in all WC-Co alloys.

Reagents are added to the flotation process of Merensky Reef ores to achieve specific functions that enable the separation of valuable minerals from gangue minerals on the basis of the difference in their surface properties. However, due to the complexity of the process, the various interactions that occur as well as the incomplete liberation of the ore and range of minerals present, it is difficult to quantify the behaviour of each of the reagents. More specifically, changes made to achieve a particular outcome may have secondary effects that can override the desired effect. If all the effects and interactions can be accounted for, it is possible to manipulate reagent suites and obtain better overall metallurgical performance. This paper discusses the effect of the addition of copper sulphate at different operating points of the recovery of the sulphide minerals. Batch flotation tests indicated that the recovery of chalcopyrite was not affected when operating conditions were varied, whereas pentlandite recovery was strongly affected by the point of reagent addition, and pyrrhotite recovery was enhanced by copper sulphate addition, irrespective of the point of addition, with the extent being dependent on the ore source. Floatable gangue was activated by copper sulphate in the presence of the dithiophosphate collector. Froth stability was also affected by copper sulphate addition.

A series of evaluations is being made to determine the relative processing costs of producing metallurgical-grade alumina from low-grade aluminous materials. These evaluations include the estimated operating and capital costs as well as recommendations for additional research and development to improve the processes and to lower their costs. The design for each process is based on published work. The three processes considered in this evaluation are designed to leach alumina as aluminum sulfate from calcined clay with sulfuric acid and to remove the silica residue by filtration. The filtrate from leaching is then purified by one of the following methods: Removal of iron in electrolytic cells using mercury cathodes; removal of iron by chemical precipitation through the formation of an iron-manganese complex; or precipitation of the alumina from an aqueous-ethanol solution, leaving iron in solution. Both the operating and capital costs for these processes are higher than those for the Bayer process. For plants producing 1,000 tons of alumina a day, the estimated operating costs per ton of alumina are: Electrolytic iron-removal process........... $81.35 Chemical iron-.removal process............... 82.08 Ethanol purification process............... 86.17 The investment in mercury is not part of the operating cost since this cost is considered equivalent to catalyst cost which would not be shown. The estimated capital investments for 1,000- ton-per- day plants on a Marshall and Stevens chemical equipment index basis of 240.0 are: Electrolytic iron-removal process...... $116,775,500 Chemical iron-removal process............... 99,418,900 Ethanol purification process................ 94,210,200 These investments include the working capital but not the land for each of the processes. Included in the electrolytic iron-removal process is an investment of $4,859,400 for mercury. Investigation of other methods for removing iron, of the decomposition operation, and of the leaching operation could reduce these costs.

INSPECTION and test methods of great diversity have been used from the most ancient times to select raw material, control its manufacture, and appraise its finished properties and value. The "miller thumb," expert in grading flour, the vintner's sense of taste, the goldsmith's micro-wear test on a touchstone, the enquiring sniff over the doubtful egg -these are all nondestructive inspection methods, accurate and depend- able, but not readily reduced to numbers in the c.g.s. system. A horse trader inspecting a possible purchase is interested in more than age, size, weight, color. heredity, speed, or drawbar pull which can be reduced to figures. Behavior, temperament, stamina, health-past, present and future---are just as important as the numerically determinate constants.

Pile raft foundation system has been accepted as an economic foundation design for high rises and heavily loaded structures. Seismic response analysis of PR foundation systems involves complex pile-soil-pile interaction as well as raft-soil-pile interactions, for which simplified methods have limitations. Kinematic rocking of a pile group is known to be influenced significantly by the pile configuration. The presence of an embedded pile cap, or a raft, as in the case of a piled raft can further alter the dynamic characteristics of a pile group-soil system. In the present study, frequency dependent kinematic response factors are evaluated for piled raft foundation, using the substructuring approach based ACS SASSI program. Performance of the numerical analysis methodology is first evaluated with results from analytical and experimental studies reported in literature. The effect of pile layout on kinematic response is then studied for a piled raft in clay system based on a centrifuge shaking table test reported in literature. Kinematic response factors and horizontal impedances were determined for varying pile spacing ratios. The influence of raft has been found to increase kinematic translation by up to three times in the piled raft in clay system. Pile configuration is found to play a significant role in kinematic rocking of piled rafts. The presence of raft is observed to significantly reduce dynamic rotational stiffness coefficient in the dimensionless frequency range of 0.23 to 0.6, and increase damping coefficient after a dimensionless frequency of 0.4, for all pile configurations studied. The effect of an embedded raft is hence an important consideration while evaluating foundation input motion as well as impedances of piled raft foundations. INTRODUCTION The Piled raft foundation (PR), is a composite foundation system that facilitates load sharing between pile and raft. It is an economic foundation option for high rises and heavily loaded structures. Soil structure interaction (SSI) in PR system involves raft-soil-pile, and pile-soil-pile interactions which needs to be considered in static or dynamic SSI analysis. The effect of pile can have substantial influence on foundation input motion, for seismic analysis (Di Laora et al. 2017). Piles are observed to depress a wide spectrum of the seismic excitation (Fan et al., 1991, Di Laora & de Sanctis, 2013). Although kinematic response of pile groups have been extensively studied in the past, the influence of the presence of raft on kinematic response characteristics of pile groups has not received much attention.

Estimates for South Africa?s coal recoverable reserves made in 1999range from nine to 59 billion tons; latest estimates by the Minerals Bureau suggest that 33 billion tons is a more likely figure. As much as 70% of that coal is located in the Waterberg, Witbank, and Highveld coalfields, as well as lesser amounts in the Ermelo, Free State and Springbok Flats coalfields. However, the Witbank and Highveld coalfields are approaching exhaustion (estimated 9 billion tons of recoverable coal remaining in each), while the coal quality or mining conditions in the Waterberg, Free State and Springbok Flats coalfields are significant barriers to immediate, conventional exploitation. New extraction technologies, technologies exploiting the energy content of the coal in situ, as well as suitable uses and markets for low-grade, high-ash coal are required before the country can utilize its admittedly vast coal resources. Major challenges for exploiting some Limpopo province coalfields are severe water shortages, insufficiently developed infrastructure, fragile environments and poor roof conditions due to the depth and complex geology. In the Central Basin (Witbank, Highveld and Ermelo coalfields) technical innovations for thin seam extraction, economic mining of both pillar coal and intrusion-fragmented resource blocks and the utilization of lower-grade coals are required. The success of the fluidized bed combustion technology is necessary to utilize the low-grade coals of the Free State and Molteno coalfields, while environmental exemption for past problems, together with strategies for mining small, disjointed thin-seam resource blocks, is required in KwaZulu-Natal. Clean coal technologies, coal cost and quality, environmental considerations, sustainable development, the growth of the South African economy and Government?s regulation of the electricity industry are the main challenges to the continued use of coal as South Africa?s primary energy source.
