The selection of tensioned versus non-tensioned roof bolts, for primary coal mine roof support, has been debated for well over 25 years. The wide spread use of fully grouted rebar marked the beginning of the discussion of the relative importance of bolt tension and the resultant immediate roof compression. The focus is on roof conditions encountered in coal mines however the discussion may be extended to hard rock mines as well. The theoretical bases for both systems are presented, with the analysis focused on the bolt's ability to actually fulfill the theoretical assumptions. Of specific concern are assumptions about bolt tension upon installation and the likelihood of maintaining useful bolt tension over time. The usefulness of tension roof bolting is limited by the mechanical interaction of roof bolt assembly and the rock, which may be valid at the time of installation only. Ambient mine atmosphere and fluctuation in moisture content changes the physical condition of rock, which may have a significant impact on the effectiveness and longevity of bolt tension. Changes in the material properties of the surface of the immediate roof can invalidate the assumptions, which were made in the design stage of roof support system. This means that the roof support in the long term excavations may be inadequate requiring costly rehabilitation. The presented arguments are illustrated with the examples of some relevant experimental data. Tension primary roof bolting is recommended where the immediate roof is: ? "LaModel uses a laminated overburden boundary-element model and can calculate not only seam-level stresses and displacements but also surface subsidence for thin tabular deposit such as coal seams (Heasley, 1998). Up to this point in time, the material property wizards in LaModel have primarily been designed for calculating accurate stress distributions in single- and multipleseam situations, and for investigating and optimizing pillar sizes and layouts in relation to overburden, abutment, and multipleseam stresses. However, the critical input parameters that will give the most accurate seam-level stress distribution do not necessarily produce the best surface subsidence prediction. The objective of this paper is to develop a methodology for calibrating the critical input parameters in LaModel to optimize surface subsidence prediction.For optimum surface subsidence prediction, it was found that the gob convergence (as defined by the final gob modulus) and the overburden stiffness (as defined by the lamination thickness) were the two most critical parameters that needed to be calibrated (Heasley, 2016). By calibrating numerous panels with various widths and depths, a formula that provides the optimum final gob modulus to use for subsidence prediction was developed. Also, three different empirical formulas for optimizing the lamination thickness as a function of overburden depth and/or the panel width to- depth ratio were determined for the three cases: supercritical panels, and subcritical panels with and without offsets. Further, if the user has measured data for subsidence factor and angle-of draw, the optimum final gob modulus and lamination thickness can be determined from the measured data. These new subsidence prediction formulas are being implemented into new material wizards in LaModel.INTRODUCTIONIn the past few decades, with the increased need for highly productive mining techniques, full extraction mining methods have been increasingly employed in the U.S. coal mining industry. These total extraction mining methods, which include both longwall mining and room-and-pillar retreat mining, normally cause immediate roof caving and the associated surface subsidence. These methods can be highly productive and cost-effective, but the associated surface subsidence can cause damage to surface structures and negatively impact the surface environment (Peng, 2008). Therefore, a reliable program for predicting the surface subsidence associated with full extraction mining is required for appropriately engineering and managing the surface subsidence impacts of full extraction mining."

This paper describes the importance of considering ground control measures when importing U.S. continuous mining technology in foreign countries. Important ground control factors are discussed. Each year the USA exports a significant amount of continuous miner equipment (i.e. continuous miners, roof bolters, coal haulers, shuttle cars, continuous haulages, scoops and feeder-breakers). International customers see the opportunity to significantly improve their productivity and increase their longwall gateroad development rates by implementing the room-and-pillar (place changing) mining systems used throughout the USA. However, a number of issues are often overlooked or not thoroughly evaluated when selecting the equipment, often resulting in lower than expected productivity. Ground control is one of the critical factors that must be addressed. Since 1993, the author has assisted numerous international customers and manufacturers with implementing or improving the performance of continuous miner and room-and-pillar systems in Australia, India, Mexico, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. An essential first step is to conduct a thorough ground control study, and then integrate its findings into mine layout, equipment selection and section operating plans. Based on actual case histories, the author will present a number of examples and "Do's and Don'ts." Another key to success is the involvement of manufacturers and suppliers with customers when implementing new systems and technology. The importance of allowing for cultural evolution by both management and workers for acceptance and successful implementation of any new system is also discussed. Over the past ten years, the global coal industry has gone through some very dramatic changes. Countries that previously experienced a freight advantage, such as Australia shipping coal to Japan and Korea versus the United States, are finding they are now in a world coal market similar to other commodities and products. Today, coal prices arc stated F.O.B. at the consumer, and the origin is often irrelevant. Also, previously state-run coal industries have been privatized, such as the United Kingdom, and others such as Poland and India are currently going through the same transition from state-run to the private sector. In all cases, the key to continued viability, or survival, depends largely on reducing costs in order to compete for a market share. Two ways exist to reduce costs. First, almost everyone tries to reduce expenditures. Depending on the circumstances at a given mine or in a specific country, this helps to some point. However, most find that secondly, production must be increased to achieve the necessary cost reductions to compete in today's global coal market. As a result, over the past ten years, foreign companies and countries have looked to the USA for new mining methods and systems to significantly increase productivity. Thus, a major portion of American equipment manufacturers and suppliers sales have been exports, which has played a major role in helping to "keep-the-doors-open" for a number of companies through the lean 1990's, when American coal companies were postponing capital expenditures and expansions. As foreign companies and countries have looked to the USA for ways to improve productivity, they have become particularly interested in continuous miner equipment systems and most often "room-and-pillar," "bord-and-pillar" or "place changing" mining systems for four reasons. First, in countries such as the United Kingdom and Germany, who have been longwall mining for generations, there remain numerous remnant small pockets of reserves in existing mines that are either too small or too difficult to longwall mine, and are conducive to the flexibility of continuous miner systems. Second, for countries such as Australia, who have experienced the constant problem of developing longwall gateroads in a timely manner to avoid longwall move delays, new or alternate methods are required. Third, companies and countries using roadheader machines on coal production are recognizing the increased productivity potential of continuous miner equipment. Fourth, countries such as South Africa and India, where a substantial amount of the production comes from conventional mining methods, "drill-and-blast", companies are recognizing the opportunity to improve by implementing continuous miner technology. Colliers & Associates, Inc. has found that over the past eight years too often foreign companies or countries purchase American continuous miner equipment without first conducting a thorough geologic, geotechnical and ground control study for the reserves to be mined. The problems are compounded by not developing mine plans, and submitting them to the regulatory authorities for approval prior to purchasing and even implementing the equipment.

"A West Kentucky mine operation in No. 11 seam, encountered floor heave, due to the localized increase of the thickness in the fireclay mine floor. Floor heave has overridden seals installed in two mined out panels. The third seal’s location was planned for isolating that area from the Mains. A plan of support has been developed to prevent repetition of the floor heave and related problems outby the seals. The applied ground control measures were successful. An attempt of a 3D numerical modeling was made, that it would match the observed behavior of the mine floor and could be used as a design tool in similar conditions. In the paper described are sequence of events, a mitigation ground control system applied, and the first stage of numerical modeling.IntroductionWest Kentucky coal mine operation in the No. 11 seam has approached an area where the fireclay floor thickness increases to about 5 ft. Delayed floor heave has been observed. In the first sealed area (Panel KK), floor heave has overridden the seals and has begun to progress outby. This could not be allowed at the new seal location PP described in this paper because such override would affect the mains. Previously numbers of standing support systems were used, but their effectiveness was not satisfactory as is illustrated in Figure 1, Figure 2, and Figure 3. Therefore, with sealing of the next area approaching, mine management was looking for a better solution that would eliminate the problem. In that stage, our team looked closely at the geology and strength of roof and floor, as well as the characteristics of ground failure around the seal at the first site. The technical literature has been searched as well Haramy et al. 1986 Hsiung and Peng 1987, Peng 2008, Santos & Bieniawski 1987. This led to the identification of factors responsible for the ground failure. It has been determined that increased fireclay thickness from typically less than 2 ft to about 5 ft, when compared to the previously mined parts of reserve, and the strong limestone strata just above the immediate roof composed of 2 ft of black shale, created conditions of failure. It appeared that, when pillars were punching into the mine floor, the strong roof did not break but was bending, exerting high pressure on outby pillars, causing rib failures and closure. This is a similar mechanism to a strong roof affecting longwall shields. The remedial action planned was additional support."

Surface subsidence associated with coal mining activities in the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa changes the natural environment in several ways, and current challenges for mining companies include rehabilitation of the natural environment and the prevention of further degradation. To monitor the spatial and temporal evolution of surface subsidence, traditional fieldbased monitoring approaches such as GPS and spirit leveling are employed at a number of locations. However, the resulting measurements are point-based, and frequent revisitations are necessary to map the evolution of surface subsidence basins over time. To address these limitations, differential interferograms derived from repeat-pass satellite-borne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems were tested for their ability to measure and monitor surface deformation. The SAR data was captured by the European ERS-1 and ERS-2 satellite and covered a timeframe between 2008- 09-15 and 2008-09-15. The resulting interferograms revealed several features indicative of surface subsidence. Ground truth data confirmed the presence of a subsidence basin, detected using differential interferometry techniques during the 35-day period between April 12, 2008 and May 17, 2008; a maximum vertical deformation of 3.2 cm (1.3 in) was recorded. Interferometric monitoring revealed an eastward migration of the subsidence basin between June 2, 2008 and September 15, 2008 with an additional 4.7 cm (1.9 in) of subsidence observed. This migration coincides with the advance of the working face of the mine during this period. Finite element modeling will be performed in order to model the rates and evolution of surface subsidence haloes as underground mining advances. These presented results demonstrate the ability of interferometric synthetic aperture radar techniques to measure surface subsidence as well as the monitoring of the evolution of subsidence basins over time. This implies that the technique could be included, together with traditional field-based surveying techniques, in an operational monitoring system. With knowledge on deformation rates and subsidence basin evolution, informed decisions on current and future infrastructure development can be made and remedial actions and prevention strategies can be formulated for the problems associated with environmental degradation.

"The stability control of longwall coal face is the key technology of large-cutting-height mining method. Therefore, a systematic study of the factors that affect coal face stability and its control technology is required in the development of large-cutting-height mining method in China. After the practical field observation and years of study, it was found that the more than 95% of failure in coal face are shear failure. The shear failure analysis model of coal face has been established, that can perform systematic study among factors such as mining height, coal mass strength, roof load, support resistance, and face flipper protecting plate horizontal force. Meanwhile, sensitivity analysis of factors influencing coal face stability showed that improving support capacity, cohesion of coal mass and decreasing roof load of coal face are the key to improve coal face stability. Numerical simulation of the factors affecting coal face stability has been performed using UDEC software and the results are consistent with the theoretical analysis. The coal face reinforcement technology of largecutting- height mining method using the grouting combined with coir rope is presented. Laboratory tests have been carried out to verify its reinforcement effect and practical application has been implemented in several coal mines with good results. It has now become the main technology to reduce longwall coal face failure of large-cutting-height mining method.INTRODUCTIONLarge-cutting-height mining method of more than 3.5m mining height, is one of the main methods for thick-seam mining in China. Currently, the largest mining height is 7.3m and the support capacity is 1,800mt. Shendong and Jincheng mining area have the best use of large-cutting-height mining technology (Wang, 2009). Generally, the mining height ranges from 6.5m to 7m and the support capacity ranges from 1,000mt to 2,000mt, annual output of the panel is between 10 and 12 million tons and the highest are 15 million tons. The main goal of large-cutting-height mining technology is to achieve high yield and high efficiency by increasing the advancing speed of longwall face (Yuan, 2011- 2012). However, in certain geologic conditions, rib spalling and roof falls in the unsupported area often occur. Because of the large tonnage of large-cutting-height mining equipment, once the rib spalling and roof falls cause the equipment to be out of alignment, the face advancing speed could be affected seriously that in turn affects the output (Yang, 2012). Therefore, studying the failure mechanism and control technique of coal face in large-cuttingheight mining method is of great significance."

For several centuries surface subsidence has been recognized as an inevitable consequence of most underground mining. In fact, British court records of disputes and litigations related to property damage due to mining subsidence can be traced to the early fifteenth century (Shadbolt, 1978). The first systematic investigations of the mechanisms involved in mining subsidence can be credited to Belgian Mining Engineers. The re- search effort was initiated after the widespread movements and the resulting structural damages suffered by the City of Liege in the 1920's. The publication of Gonot's 1871 treatise "Loie de la NomZ" (normal theory) was one of the most not- able achievements of the Belgian school of that era (Gonot, 1871). During the past 100 years the phenomenon of mining subsidence has been the subject of intensive research, particularly in Europe where long- wall is the most common method of underground coal mining. Many theories have been advanced to explain the mechanism of ground movement as it develops from the excavation, through the superincumbent strata, to the surface. Such theories include the original concepts of beams, arches, domes and the contemporary mathematical modeling principles of strata movement assuming two extreme concepts-- a continuous elastic medium and a stochastic medium for the superincumbent strata. An excellent review of the development of these theories ?-s given by Shadbolt (Shadbolt, 1978). In conjunction with the theories of mass strata movement in the vicinity of mine workings, the subject of surface subsidence predictions has also been the subject of extensive research. The development of reliable and rational techniques of subsidence prediction is imperative, if this phenomenon is to be recognized and controlled within acceptable environmental levels. Empirical as well as mathematical methods have been proposed to fulfill this objective and a comprehensive analysis of these methods has been presented in the literature (Bramer, 1973; Shad- bolt, 1978; Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1980). As a result of this intensive research effort, it is now accepted in many )coal fields-- mainly in Europe-- that the state of art in subsidence prediction and control has approached a level where mining induced surface displacements can be predicted to a suggested accuracy of less than + 20 percent. Furthermore, such movements can be translated into anticipated structural failures using established damage criteria, thus enabling appropriate precautionary measures to be implemented. In this country, subsidence is rapidly gaining emphasis as an important environmental problem of underground coal mining. Damage resulting from this phenomenon ranges from land settlement to severe structural damage and has been witnessed in rural (Illinois, Colorado, West Virginia, Virginia, Pennsylvania) as well as in urban areas (Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Illinois, Wyoming). Yet, the art of subsidence prediction and hence control in this country, for both longwall and room-and-pillar coal mining, is far from approaching the maturity reached by the Europeans. In this paper, field measurments and computer modeling techniques have been used to develop some basic relationships of longwall subsidence and its related parameters. Because the objective of this study was to develop regional subsidence trends, all processed information pertains to the Appalachian coal region.

It is known that the backfilling confinement increases the pillar strength and also reduces the rib lateral displacement. With backfilling, it is possible to increase the room-and-pillar mining recovery. This paper aims to study the behavior of coal pillars confinement using rock fill as backfilling material. Laboratory tests were carried out to determine the behavior of backfilling materials. Constitutive models were developed for the tested backfilling materials. Numerical simulations for the effect of backfilling materials on the ground stability in room-and-pillar coal mine entry were performed. The backfill method is a good strategy to (i) improve the ground stability in room-and-pillar coal mines for long term, especially for weak coal seams, (ii) increase the coal mining recovery and (iii) reduce the quantity of waste material on waste piles at the surface.

Austar Coal Mine (formerly Southlands and Ellalong Collieries) has had a long association with difficult strata control conditions associated with mining depth and a highly jointed/cleated coal seam. The conditions include poor longwall face conditions, cyclic loading, heavy tailgate (TG) roadway conditions, and difficulties in maintaining stable roadways on development at 5.2 m (17 ft), as well as the geotechnical challenges of an 8.5-m (27.9 ft) -wide roadway required for installation faces. The introduction of Longwall Top Coal Caving (LTCC) to this environment has aided in the management of some of these issues, but LTCC has also given rise to other geotechnical considerations. Additional geotechnical issues associated with LTCC not only require management during operations, but also require consideration when evaluating new mining areas at Austar Coal Mine or potential LTCC extractable resources throughout Australia and the world. In September 2006, LTCC commenced at Austar Coal Mine in longwall panel A1. Since this point the LTCC face has been increased from 147 to 216 m (482 to 709 ft)and finally to 227 m (745 ft) in width, and it has also been rehanded and modified in the three fully extracted panels to date. The application of LTCC in panels A1, A2, A3, and now A4 has been very successful, both from a coal resource recovery point of view and in the management of the principal hazards of spontaneous combustion and strata control. This paper focuses on the geotechnical aspects of the application of LTCC at Austar Coal Mine and also reviews some advances in general strata control management at the mine.

The swelling process is an important problem causing damages to the structures in or on swelling rocks, both during construction and operating life. To understand swelling problem, a number of testing methods have been developed by many researchers. In these studies, the swelling parameters, in most cases, are derived from pedometer tests. The swelling parameters determined from oedometer type tests represent one-dimensional behaviour (one-dimensional swelling law) therefore, it is quite difficult to extrapolate the pedometer type test results to the three-dimensional in-situ conditions. To overcome these problems, a three-dimensional approach is suggested for clay bearing rocks. Results of triaxial swelling tests conducted on marl from Dodurga Lignite Coal Mine are presented. Triaxial swelling characteristics of the marl are presented and design approach for tunnels is described.

The chemical consolidating materials and three consolidating methods, that is, capsule, forced infusion and spraying, were introduced. Finally the application effects of the chemical consolidating technique to reinforce the fractured surrounding rock of roadways were analysed.

Fully mechanized mining technology, with a large cutting height in thick coal seam, has been developed to be large-scale, mechanized, and intelligent. Furthermore, it is also superior to other mining methods because it operates more efficiently and has higher recovery rates of coal resources. Dongpang coal mine (located in north China) is one of the largest coal mining productions in Hebei province. It is significant because it is the first set of coal mines in China to adopt fully mechanized mining technology that has large cutting height potential. When looking at the coal seams of deep mining, specifically in the mine No. 2612 where the working face is 4.5–6.5 m cutting height, the coal walls have low stability due to the way the coal seam fluctuates in a large working face. This paper adopts mechanical analysis, numerical simulation, and field observation research methods to control the rib fall of coal walls in a coal mine. By adopting research methods that analyze the mechanical characteristics of face roof, we are able to conclude the main roof structure of the masonry seam stability criterion in overhead mining with large cutting height. This is done through employing the numerical simulation method, which helped to determine the main factors that influence the rib fall of a coal wall and weighting factor. Through field observations, we discovered the technology method to relieve, control, and mitigate rib falls of coal seam in a coal mine. We also discovered methods that would ensure the smooth mining of the working face of the mine by strengthening the bolting and grouting reinforcement methods used to improve the working face of stope surrounding rock conditions. This paper discusses research results that enrich the stope wall rock control method by expressing how fully mechanized mining technology, with a large cutting height, is meaningful to solve the complex conditions of rock fall caused by thick coal seam.

Tailgate pillar and tailgate-face corner humps have been a major threat to longwall coal mines where hump-prone conditions exist. The yield pillar design concept, in which the longwall chain pillars are designed in such way that they can yield in a nonviolent or controlled manner during longwall retreat, has been used in many longwall mines to prevent tailgate pillar humps. However, this practice often shifts the side abutment load onto the tailgate-face corner especially when a massive and strong sandstone member is present within the caving zone or in the vicinity of the coal seam. Therefore, the abutment pillar design concept has also been used in some hump-prone coal mines to minimize the stress concentration on the tailgate panel rib for the control of tailgate-race corner humps. The disadvantage of using the abutment pillar design concept is that it is more costly and puts additional pressure on mine operations for gate entry development and significantly reduces the recovery of coal reserve. In addition to pillar size, panel layouts. such as the panel width and panel orientation also play a critical role in pillar or face humps and should he taken into account. Based Upon the Cyprus mine design and operational experiences at Willow Creek and case studies at other bump-prone longwall nines in the U.S., the authors attempt to identify the critical factors causing coal mine bumps and to introduce some guidelines and criteria for the design of both yield and abutment pillar systems and panel layouts.

Roof falls and other ground control incidents make up a significant portion of fatal accidents in underground mines. BHP Billiton has undergone a review of all fatalities in their operations and divided these into 10 fundamental categories of which underground ground control is one. Each underground roof fall fatality was investigated and the root causes workshopped to develop a protocol for the control of fatalities due to falls of ground. This protocol sets out 22 requirements which each BHP Billiton underground mine site must comply with. This paper describes the development, requirements and application of the protocol within BHP Billiton.

The finite element method was used for forecasting the state of massif during the development of mining works. In recent years, Peabody Coal Company has enjoyed a great amount of success using roof trussing as a secondary support system. Since 1975, over 180,000 trusses have been installed in 12 different Peabody mines with varying geological conditions. Projections from Peabody, and throughout the mining industry, indicate a continuous growth in the trussing principle for roof control. Peabody's primary supplier has sold over 1,000,000 trusses to 50 different mines throughout the country. (1) Roof trusses provide an improved means of controlling difficult roof conditions which, in turn, improves worker safety and mine production. Since the original development of the truss, (2) the only major modification to the trussing procedure has been the addition of the resin point anchor system in the mid-70's. The resin point anchor was the catalyst needed to provide a reliable anchor and create acceptance of the roof truss by both management and labor. Peabody began using trusses in their mines in 1975. For the first few years, most of the truss effort was geared toward determining proper anchorage, spacing, and gathering historical data. In recent years, Peabody's activities have centered on the development of improving trussing procedures. Through monitoring and trussing activities, a number of areas of improvement have been found.

Caterpillar has been involved in highwall mining since the purchase of Bucyrus in 2011. The Cat® HW300 is a continuation of the Superior Highwall Miner that was first sold in the USA in 1994. Currently, there are more than 80 machines supplied worldwide, and Caterpillar envisions increasing the population steadily in the coming years. The Cat highwall miner product group, based in Beckley, WV, has been involved in the sales of all miners to date. With the dealer model that Caterpillar is using, more people, dealers in particular, need to be trained on the application of highwall mining. A site investigation is a highwall specialist?s work, and Caterpillar assists dealers and customers in determining the technical feasibility of highwall mining on mine sites. With the ever-increasing amount of requests, it proved to be important that people without highwall mining expertise, yet who are familiar with mining, could perform a very quick analysis of a potential highwall mining site to determine at an early stage if it is worthwhile to invest the time and money of all parties?customer, dealer, and Caterpillar?in further follow-up. Therefore, Caterpillar would like to introduce the Cat HW300 QuickScan tool.

"Rib failures are a major hazard in underground mining. When pillars are subjected to loading, extensile cracks are generated parallel to the excavation boundary, which can manifest as rib falls. A common mitigation measure is to install supports, especially bolts, normal to the rib surface. The type and spatial distribution of these supports along the pillar is often based on experience rather than comprehensive analysis. Since conducting field experiments is often impractical and expensive, a convenient alternative is to perform 3D numerical modeling. In this study, FLAC3D has been used to capture the interaction of rib bolts and the failure processes governing the stability of pillars. An associated goal is to determine whether, at all, a continuum software is capable of modeling the effect of supports. The modeling involved two important steps: selection of a proper constitutive model, and, explicit simulation of rock bolts. Based on precursory work in the last decade, an S-shaped strength criterion was chosen that can describe the tensile fracture mechanism of rock at low confinement and shear failure mechanism of rock at high confinement. The built-in pile structural element in FLAC3D is a simplified representation of the complete bolt system. INTRODUCTION Rib failure-related hazards and injuries have plagued the mining industry for decades (Mohamed et al., 2016; Iannacchione and Prosser, 1998). In highly stressed environments, excavation parallel cracks are the primary initiators of skin instability. In absence of any support, this failure can indirectly destabilize the excavation by increasing the exposed span of intersections and roadways. Over the last two decades, there have been numerous injuries (fatal and non-fatal) due to rib failures in underground coal/non-coal mines."

Board and pillar system of mining has beer, practised in India in view of abundant availability of cheap labour force, low investment and quick return. Subsequently, selective mining from thick seems and partial mining under surface features boosted the trend. As s result over 2000 million tonnes of coal is locked up in form of developed pillars inclusive of about 1000 million tonnes of high grade coking coal in Jharia field alone. The trend of pillar formation is still uninterrupted as the estimated pillar reserve in this field in 1974 was only 700 million tonnes which increased to 961 million tonnes in 1983. The trend is not much different in other coalfields end as a rough estimate 100 million tonnes of virgin coal reserve is being transferred to pillar every year. The method of board and pillar mining is likely to remain moat preferred technology for decade9 to come in view of several inherent advantage in Indian mining conditions.

Cyprus Shoshone is an underground coal mine in southern Wyoming owned by Cyprus Coal Company, a subsidiary of Cyprus Minerals Company. To date, seven longwall panels have been extracted from the pitching seam under increasing depth of cover from 150 ft to 1200 ft. The purpose of this paper is to describe the geology, rock mechanics needs identification, design, testing and successful application of the current headgate/tailgate cribbing system. The immediate roof of the Shoshone is unique in that the first 50 ft of lithology is interbedded mudstones. The mudstone is slickensided, highly friable and has characteristics of unconsolidated fill relative to self-spanning and beaming abilities. Finite element modelling analysis of the overall geomechanical environment showed the mudstone to yield under applied longwall abutment stress. Roof bolt system design methodology also pinpointed the relative weakness of the mudstone roof. In-mine entry vertical convergence and weight response from the mudstone identified the need to design a crib which had superior weight capacity over a wide range of convergence. Design of a structure ensued to achieve the superior strength properties of wood parallel to the grain and the displacement properties of wood perpendicular to the grain. Testing of the prototype structure along with other alternative wooden cribs was done at the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation facility in the Denver Federal Center, Colorado. The test results verified the design. Crib placement pattern was chosen to maximize support with a confined core crib under the high convergence area. The design has been successfully installed in over 5,000 ft of headgate entry in the 11 left panel.
