The classical slope analysis and a statistical technique were used in order to determine the iron complexes formed in the organic phase during the extraction of Fe(III) from Fe-Ni-Co sulfate solutions with Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) in kerosene. Equilibrium constants for the extraction based on these complexes were also calculated. The complexes determined were of the general form (Fe(OH)3-nRn?sHR)x' where n varied between 1 and 2.5 and s between 0 and 3, and both were found to be decreasing as the iron loading in the organic phase increased. Values of 1,2 and 3 were generally found for x, indicating that the complexes were monomers, dimers and trimers.

The quest for productivity improvement, exclusively through capital investment and technological advances, is an incomplete process. Improvement, through capital and technology, is often not achieved because we fail to energize the true potential and commitment in our employees.

Improvement on controlling the stope limits has enabled the assessment of technical performance in several underground mining operations. Technical performance, integrated to stope geotechnical and geomorphological parameters, constitutes the basis which guides mining engineers in the Mineral Reserves Estimation process. Moreover, there are established definitions to report this information in Canada, incorporated in NI 43–101, which stipulates that “A Mineral Reserve includes diluting materials and allowances for losses that may occur when the material is mined” [1]. However, some loopholes have been identified regarding practical standards followed to specify the way to include and report ore losses when the lost material was blasted and must be left behind unrecovered inside the stope. In fact, general efforts to estimate and quantify the negative effects of operational ore losses only consider under-break ore loss. However, mining engineers frequently confront situations requesting the anticipated closure of a stope. Therefore, reconciliation process should reflect the amount of unrecovered Mineral Reserve. This work presents a discussion of possible practices to integrate adequately operational ore losses consisting of blasted but not recovered material and focuses on how different approaches regarding the material constitution could severely affect the stope technical performance interpretation.

Groundwater Monitoring is typically required by regulatory agencies at potentially hazardous landfills or surface impoundments. Agencies have often required an arbitrary number of wells with limited evaluation of the effectiveness of the network to detect a leak. A Monitoring Efficiency Model (MEMO) has been developed to improve the design and cost effectiveness of monitoring well networks. MEMO 15 an analytical model that simulates the migration of hypothetical contaminant plumes from a site and quantifies the efficiency of alternative well network designs in detecting the plumes. The computed monitoring efficiency provides a quantitative measure of the well network adequacy based on hydrogeologic considerations. The model was recently used to design the groundwater monitoring well network for a heap leach pad at the proposed Beartrack Project.

This paper reviews some of the factors involved in selecting amine flotation reagents used to remove silica from ores. A comparison is made between the chemical reagent design approaches used to identify flotation reagents that are used to recover silica- and oxygen-containing minerals and the chemical reagents used to recover sulfide minerals. This introduction gives practitioners who are involved with oxide- and carbonate-type minerals and who may not be familiar with sulfide mineral flotation some ideas of the chemical reagent design challenges that exist with froth flotation on a broader scale and why oxide type mineral flotation reagents are what they are. This is followed by several sections that discuss various classes of available amines. The closing sections emphasize that the optimal choice of an amine collector depends not only on that amine's specific chemical characteristics and costs but also on the operating conditions, especially the flotation feed particle size distribution.

"The Greater Paris projects involves the creation of a 200km extension of the actual public transport network on the close outskirt of Paris. In 2011, SYSTRA has been awarded the Engineering studies of a 20km underground section in the densely urbanized southeast quarter of the Parisian suburb. In order to both guide the TBM technology choice and identify and mitigate the risk due to soil settlement during tunnel boring, several analysis have been carried out and integrated into a Geographical Information System to share and manage this risk during the successive design phases of the project. The geological context‘s complexity and the Owner‘ requirements have led to the necessity of using an innovative analysis approach, leveraging both the numerical modelling analysis’s accuracy and the analytical method‘s ease of programming and implementation in a GIS, by the mean of the calibration of the analytical approach’ parameters on the FEM results.INTRODUCTIONThe Greater Paris Transport Project foresees the extension of the actual public transport network to the close outskirt of Paris through the extension lines 11 and 14, the creation of a circular new line around Paris - line 15 completed by lines 16 and 18 linking developing territories - and line 17 to Roissy-Charlesde- Gaulle airport.The SOCIETE DU GRAND PARIS (SGP) is the public institution that promotes this project and awards SYSTRA as Engineering for the 15th Line southeast section.Line 15th – South-East sectionIn 2011, the Owner SGP (SOCIÉTÉ DU GRAND PARIS) awarded to SYSTRA the preliminary and detailed design of a 20km-long underground section of Line 15, between the stations of Villejuif-Louis-Aragon and Noisy-Champs. Hornestake's Mclaughlin Mine is the first commercial application of pressure oxidation pretreatment of gold prior to cyanidation. Inherent to the autoclave process are several liquid/solid separations. Flocculant consumption represents a significant portion of the consumable reagent costs at McLaughlan. This paper focuses on the efforts of the Operating, Metallurgy and Engineering groups to improve thickener operation and minimize flocculant consumption. An operating philosophy incorporating feed solids control, increasing flocculant dilution water and minimizing flocculant solution shear has resulted in a reduction in 1986 flocculant costs of $0.054/t ($0.06 st) versus 1985 costs. Additional changes are projected to result in a further cost reduction of $0.20/t ($0.22/.st) in 1987.

It is hypothesized that the Hotelling Valuation Principle (HVP) can determine the value of developed gold reserves using simple methods and easily obtained data. This paper reports the results of an empirical test of this hypothesis. Using publicly available data from North American gold companies, we obtained data for V, R, p, and c and ran a simple linear regression using equation (1.1) as the definition of the dependent and explanatory variables. By examining the value of the coefficients of the resulting regression equation, we can draw conclusion as to whether or not the HVP can be confident1y used as an estimator of the value of developed gold reserves.

The paper industry is an $80 billion/year business that is the largest consumer of industrial minerals. Paper industry generally refers to paper and paperboard products, including pulp mills. Grades and uses of paper and paperboard are very diverse, including such things as napkins, paper plates, corrugated boxes, magazines, newsprint, currency, and copier paper. Only about 40% of paper utilizes industrial minerals as fillers or coating materials. Minerals are used for both functional and economic reasons. Most often, minerals such as kaolin clay and calcium carbonate are used to improve print quality, brightness and opacity of paper. The minerals can be added as fillers into the paper in the wet end of the papermaking system, or can be applied as part of a coating to the paper. Coated papers are the highest quality paper, being used for magazines, advertising brochures and annual reports. Common uses for filled uncoated paper are books, copier paper, envelopes and many of the Sunday newspaper advertising inserts.

Smectite is a common impurity in the kaolins of Georgia.This impurity is harmful to the low-shear rheology of kaolin slurries in concentrations as low as a few weight percent. The deleterious effect of smectite on the low-shear rheology is due to the swelling of the mineral. Montmorillonite containing clays were treated to precipitate a compact brucite layer {Mg(OH)2} in the interlayer region of the expandable layer silicate mineral. This treatment forms ahydroxy-Mg-montmorillonite with characteristics similar to chlorite. This treatment effectively reduces the swelling capacity of the mineral and improves the rheological properties of kaolin slurries contaminated with smectite impurities.

When I wrote the Railroad portion of "Mining Engineering" magazines 94 Powder River Basin (PRB) Coal Article I described to you some definite destinations the Railroads had in mind. As with many destinations, the ones I wrote of turned out to be merely stops on the way to places that we have yet to reach. Somewhere along the way we discovered that making it better is a continuous process not just something that you can do in phases I, II, III, & IV. We always knew this I suspect, but perhaps not at the awareness level that exists in RR environments in 1997. The purpose of this article is to update the 94 article, which I could do very quickly. Everything I told you we were going to do in 94 is done, end of story! But in addition to making it a very short article it would not be telling you the things RR has done beyond what we were planning in 94 and for the future.

Resin bolt performance is dependent on the size of the resin annulus, i.e., the difference between the hole and bolt radii. The majority of the millions of resin roof bolts installed each year in the United States employ an annulus of 3.175 or 4.775 mm (0.125 or 0.188 in.). Short encapsulation pull tests with resin annuli of 3.175 and 2.413 mm (0.125 and 0.095 in.) resisted an average of 0.08 t/grouted mm (2.25 st/grouted in.) with no significant variation. Resin loses to simulated fractures increased as annulus size decreased.

This paper shows how technology developed to analyse stabilised slurries can be applied to paste flows. The rheological characterisation of paste mixtures using the generalised yield pseudoplastic rheological model is described. It is noted that the slump test does not provide a complete rheological characterisation of a paste. Methods for calculating pipeline pressure gradients for laminar and turbulent flow are presented. The minimum pressure gradient is an important consideration to ensure that solids do not settle on the pipe invert. Important points to be considered for a pipe loop test programme are noted. The usefulness of the pseudo shear diagram for scaling pipe loop test measurements is demonstrated. Issues to be considered for the design of paste reticulation systems are discussed.

All gold occurrences in Tanzania are of Precambrian age and in geological settings similar to gold deposits in other parts the world. The three main areas of interest are perhaps the least prospected of areas of gold mineralization in Precambrian rocks in non- aligned, or market economy nations. Historic production exceeds 77.660 kg (2.5 million oz). Current results by small scale workers go unreported, but have been estimated to be as high as 11.000 kg (350.000 oz) annually. Gold occurs in both lower and upper Precambrian rocks. In the older. gold is associated with greenstones and iron formations typical of many cratonic areas of Precambrian age. The Tanzanian Craton lies in the north west quarter of the country where it is flanked on both east and west sides by mobile belts involving upper Precambrian rocks of high metamorphic grade. Gold occurs in fractures in the western belt within two distinct areas.

Stochastic simulation has been routinely used for performing risk and sensitivity analyses in a variety of fields. The commonly used means of generating the simulations has been the Monte Carlo approach, which usually employs a Simple Random Sampling (SRS) scheme of the variable distributions. This method is prone to sample clustering and requires a large number of samples to represent the distribution faithfully. This can become problematic for simulating complex processes where it is impossible to run an arbitrarily large number of replicate simulations. The Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS) method uses a stratified sampling approach that assures representation of the input distributions for any given number of samples. In this paper the LHS and SRS approaches are compared, using a petroleum resource estimation example.

Introduction Until recently, there were many jobs for mineral engineering graduates. Traditionally, minerals-related career paths available to university graduates stem from rather standard offerings in the disciplines of mining, metallurgy, petroleum, geology, geophysical engineering, and mineral economics. Within each discipline, there exists many career opportunities. In fact, until fairly recently, the most difficult decision for most graduates was choosing among all the available alternatives. Unfortunately, this relative state of euphoria changed quickly and dramatically within the minerals sector. Within two or three years, graduates from minerals-related engineering disciplines found it exceedingly difficult - and then almost impossible - to secure employment in the minerals sector upon graduation. At the same time, there were dramatic reductions in production requirements and, ultimately, mine closings. This resulted in massive layoffs and often termination of professional personnel possessing significant and valuable industrial experience. Obviously, this worsened an already bad employment picture for those hoping to begin a career in minerals. Certainly, there is no universal agreement on what the future offers for the US minerals industry or the career opportunities associated with it. However, there are a number of considerations that deserve study by students, faculty, administrators, and industrial personnel before minerals-related career paths are chosen. Where Will the Jobs Be and How Many? Everyone is aware that the minerals industry is very cyclic. It is not surprising then that job opportunities for new graduates also fluctuate. Typically, there is a two-to-four year lag between industry's engineering manpower needs and the academic community's ability to produce this talent. Due to the response lag, there will necessarily be years when supply and demand do not match. Employment Projections It is extremely difficult to anticipate what the key career paths might be within the next few years. Considerable speculation remains with respect to whether activity in the US minerals sector over the short-, intermediate-, and long-term will improve, remain status quo, or further deteriorate. However, some information pertaining to the prospects for career opportunities in mining engineering was offered by Tingley and Ghose (ME, Sept. 1983, p. 1274) from a study performed by Fenvessy and Schwab. Results from this industry-sponsored survey suggest that the US will experience 700 more mining engineers than needed in 1985, 1300 in 1990, and 1800 in the year 2000. These conclusions were based on the assumptions that future graduate levels remain flat and demand increases 3.6% annually. Educators quickly argued that depressed job markets, coupled with university student mobility, would negate the assumption of flat mining graduate levels in the immediate future. Student Mobility Student mobility from one engineering discipline to another is high. This is perhaps best demonstrated by the tremendous growth in programs such as computer engineering and computer science at the expense of enrollments in the more traditional engineering programs. The ability and willingness of students to quickly change engineering disciplines in response to existing and perceived job market demands have created significant student, faculty, and resource dislocations within universities nationwide. Gold cyanide equilibrium adsorption isotherms in the loading range typical of operating carbon-in-pulp/carbon-in-leach plants have been established and the effect of various cations and the presence of copper cyanide species quantified. It was found that the equilibrium loading of gold was enhanced by the presence of sodium or calcium, with calcium having an order of magnitude stronger effect. The presence of copper has an adverse effect on the equilibrium loading of gold. A unified model was developed to predict the effect of sodium and calcium concentrations in solution and the competitive carbon adsorption of copper on the equilibrium loading of gold on carbon. A satisfactory agreement between the measured gold equilibrium loadings and the model results was obtained over a wide range of solution conditions.

Wetting agents used for heap leach gold applications would appear to have technical merit in aiding in recovering higher levels of precious metal. Many questions, however, remain as to whether they will function in practice, on what type of ore are they effective and if there are any negative affects associated with their use. A series of experiments are conducted at Bateman Labs, Sparks, Nevada, to determine under what conditions reagents of this type are useful. Carbon kinetics test work was also performed to determine if there are negative aspects associated with carbon loading with the use of these treatment chemicals. This paper outlines the results of these research evaluations, the general chemistry associated with action of wetting agents on leach ores and future work which is planned to further determine the viability of these products in the mining industry.

Spherical or oil agglomeration has been recognised for many years as a possible process for the recovery of mineraVmetal values. BP has investigated the potential of spherical agglomeration for a number of minerals as have other workers. Testwork has also been carried out by both BP and others on the selective agglomeration of fine coal. The spherical agglomeration of both minerals and coal depends on the use of an immiscible liquid e.g. a hydrocarbon which is added to a suspension of the solids in water. On agitation the oil is distributed over oleophilic/hydrophobic surfaces and particle impact allows inter-particle liquid bridges to form causing agglomeration. It is also possible to enhance the oleophilicity of the material to be recovered by the use of collectors similar to those used in froth flotation.
