Anomalous geologic or stress conditions ahead of a longwall face have the potential of causing great harm to both the individual miner and the mining operation as a whole. NSA Engineering has been developing seismic tomography techniques to image the panel ahead of the face. This paper presents the results of afield effort in which a 60-m (200-ft) segment of a longwall panel containing a fault zone was surveyed daily as the face approached. Stress distribution, geologic structure and dynamic elastic properties within the panel were plotted and compared to static laboratory measurements. The surveys successfully imaged an anomalous stress concentration that was likely influenced by the presence of the fault zone. The calculated dynamic physical properties generally agreed with the laboratory measurements.

The Montana Talc ore body was discovered in 1983 in Montana's Gravelly Range, about 40 km (25 miles) south of Ennis. Initial drilling indicated a 910-kt (1-million st) ore body of high purity talc. Preliminary analyses on ore cuttings included chemical analysis, brightness measurements, and microscopic evaluations of the structure of the talc. Results indicated it was similar to talc currently being marketed from Montana and it would probably have good commercial value. Based on the positive test results, a test pit was made and a 180-t (200-st) sample of ore was mined. A portion of the ore was ground to various particle sizes and evaluated to determine its strengths, weaknesses, and other characteristics. The deposit is located close to the Cyprus Yellowstone deposit. It was therefore believed that Montana Talc ore may possess many of the same characteristics. Testing and analyses showed the talc to have a high purity and an extremely large surface area, even for Montanatype tales. The ore was also situated in a massive deposit, indicating low cost mining. While the lab analyses were encouraging, the true evidence would be obtained from commercial tests in the marketplace. About 91 t (100 st) of ore were ground to product specifications for pitch control, paint filler, and plastics filler. Consumers were contacted and requested to evaluate the sample talc products. A major trial for the talc as a pitch control agent was arranged at a Northeast paper mill. The trial indicated the new Montana Talc product performed as well or better than the current standard in the industry. In fact, due to a minor modification in the compaction process to make the transport of the talc easier, the product had substantially less dust than the currently used product. The operating people at the paper mill requested that management purchase this talc. Trials were also run at paint plants for use as a pigment filler. And the talc was fabricated into a number of plastics compounds. The initial product tests were largely positive and provided encouragement to proceed with the project. Different grinding mills were used and their performance evaluated. Significant data were generated by the custom grinders. They indicated how the Montana Talc ore ground and the particle size distributions produced at different grinding settings. Encouraged by the positive marketing tests, a prefeasibility study was commissioned. A talc grinding plant and mine plans were designed and capital and operating costs estimated. Initial economics showed an attractive return. The operating costs were among the lowest in the industry. The positive economics, along with the excellent results by the products in the marketing tests to the paper, paint, and plastics industries, led to the recommendation to proceed with the project. Plant construction began in June of 1985. The Montana Talc Co. (MTC) analyzed the data from the commercial tests. Based on the product's outstanding performance and the uniqueness of its high purity and platy structure, a strategy was developed to position the company as a premium talc supplier.

In the last decade or so, the importance of effective preventive maintenance controls and practices has taken on a new and accelerated emphasis. Advances in technology and changes in equipment and product designs impose more precise and demanding standards of quality, productivity and customer service at a very rapid pace. Daily, it is becoming more apparent that in order to fulfill current requirements, existing manufacturing practices and associated control programs must also be upgraded and expanded. This is particularly true in the field of maintenance services. As production and quality standards become more demanding, effective equipment maintenance takes on more importance and becomes more difficult to sustain. In modern plants, the failure of a single equipment component can shutdown a complete production line causing interruptions to operating and shipping schedules that result in costly downtime, dissatisfied customers, and reduced profits. These costly experiences can be minimized with an effective maintenance program that provides maximum equipment reliability and minimum downtime and readily adapts to revision and change. "Urban tunneling projects are usually extensively monitored. Most of the instruments used rely on benchmarks providing a sustainable datum throughout the life of the project. The monitoring program also is based on a predicted model of deformation induced by specific construction methods. Events can interfere with those assumptions and eventually alter the stability of these datum. In addition, the anticipated ground conditions and hence the theoretical deformation model often differ from reality. Satellite Radar Interferometry provides useful information to overcome the weakness of the hypothesis made before construction. It is also a powerful tool to ensure the continuity of the monitoring program throughout the life of the project, accurately describing the true effect of the project on the surrounding environment. This paper emphasizes the benefits and limitations of this technique for urban tunneling applications, illustrated by examples of major tunneling projects around the world. MONITORING URBAN TUNNEL PROJECTS Why Monitoring? Retrofitting existing tunnels or constructing new tunnels – including access and retrieval shafts, portals and cross passages – implies an alteration of the neighboring soil structure. Excavating, dewatering, grouting, loading tie backs, etc. artificially modifies the natural equilibrium of the pore-water pressure, of the water table level and of soil stability. In many cases, the effects are immediate: ground loss, deformation of utilities, settlements of buildings, and distortion of infrastructure are a few examples resulting from construction activity.Instrumentation and Monitoring Scope To control and mitigate the risks of damage associated with the above effects, tunnel projects usually include an instrumentation and monitoring program. Depending on the level of geotechnical, structural and environmental risk, the magnitude of this program varies. Projects with a low exposure to risk may restrain the program to conventional methods such as limited topographical surveys and intermittent manual readings of geotechnical instruments. On the other hand, iconic projects with high risk or with controversial history may implement complex and extensive instrumentation plans, involving highly technical solutions such as Automated Motorized Total Stations (AMTS – see opposite Picture 1), Multi-Point Borehole Extensometers (MPBX), In-Place Inclinometers (IPI) and a wide series of fully automated geotechnical, structural and environmental sensors. In this case, all the devices are usually connected to field data loggers collecting raw data around the clock at frequencies ranging from days to seconds, depending on the sensors."

This article offers one of the infrequent looks at Chinese mining. It includes a brief review by Parrish of a tungsten symposium held there and his comments on and impressions of the mines he visited. In early Oct. 1981, a Symposium on the Geology of Tungsten was held in the Peoples Republic of China. There were approximately 100 participants. Half of them were Chinese. The remainder included representatives of the United Nations, geologists from other nations in Southeast Asia, and 10 invited specialists from other countries. The invited guests included K.F.G. Hosking of the Camborne School of Mines, United Kingdom; C.S. Hutchinson of the University of Malaysia; K. Mattson of LKAB Int. AB, Sweden; T. Kwak of Latrobe University, Australia; K. Sato and S. Ishihara of the Geological Survey of Japan; M. Clarke of the Department of Mineral Resources, Indonesia; P. Bateman of the US Geological Survey; and the author. R. Horsnail of Amax was also invited but was unable to attend because of delayed visa clearance. The meeting was noteworthy because the Chinese were presenting more than half the papers. In addition, following the formal session, everyone was taken to the famed Jiangxi tungsten district and toured four mines there. Organization and Background The idea for a symposium on tungsten geology was brought up in late 1979 during a visit to China by the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and, in particular, by members of the Regional Mineral Resources Development Centre (RMRDC) of the United Nations. Discussions continued and in the spring of 1981 invitations were sent to selected geologists throughout the world. China's Ministry of Geology handled arrangements, scheduling, and logistics. Travel to China and all correspondence before the symposium were coordinated by the Bandung, Indonesia Bureau of RMRDC. All costs in China were met by the Peoples Republic of China. Airfares and "per diem" enroute for participants were paid by respective governments, sponsors, or individuals. On Oct. 10, visiting participants entered China from Hong Kong. The author and a few others traveled by train to Guangzhou (Canton). Most of the group flew in the next day. The entire group was then taken to Nanchang, traveling by sleeper train and arriving on Oct. 11. The symposium group stayed at the Kiangsi Hotel, where the meetings were held. Meetings Oct. 11 was a day of orientation and rest. The group was taken to an art museum and treated to a Chinese opera movie. The formal meetings began on Monday, Oct. 12. Simultaneous translations aided presentations, though more than half the Chinese speakers delivered their talks in English. The acoustics and sound system were excellent, and the Chinese provided 35-mm and overhead projectors. There was no screen, however, and the yellow, painted wall that was used detracted from projection clarity. In general, the Chinese papers were detailed, thoughtful, and professional. Some, naturally, were stronger than others. Taking them as a unit, one derives the following sequence to the Chinese approach to tungsten exploration: (1) Geologic investigations with mapping at a scale of 1:200,000 accompanied by only minor geochemical or geophysical work. (2) Geophysical investigation with regional gravity and magnetic surveys directed toward identifying deep, tectonic systems and seeking granites in thick, crustal environments. Increasing conveyor capacity and reliability is a common goal for many underground mines. This task is especially challenging when you must work with existing structure, belt, etc. Meeting this challenge, The Pittsburgh & Midway Coal Mining Co. North River Mine switched from constant fill to actively controlled fluid couplings, realizing a capacity increase from 2,100 tons per hour (2,300 stph) to 2,550 tons per hour (2,800 stph), with improved reliability. This paper will present a case study of The Pittsburgh & Midway Coal Mining Co.'s North River Mine underground conveyor haulage system. These conveyors included the main line conveyors as well as a tension controlled tripper booster panel conveyor. Characteristics and performance of the coupling and control system will be illustrated, demonstrating the systems controllability, simplicity, and dependability.

Most of the mines in Sweden are metal ore mines in hard rock and none of these mines are classed gassy because there is no methane emission. The risk of methane explosions in Swedish mines is therefore very small. Since the 1960?s, in Swedish mines, there has been a change from electric and pneumatic loaders and transport machines to diesel. Today in almost all Swedish underground mines diesels are used. One of the most common complaint from the underground mine- workers is the exhaust gases from the diesel-vehicles. This is a strong motive for attempts to assure a more comfortable environment. Another motive for a better efficiency of ventilation under ground is the increasing cost of energy for fans and for heating the air during winter. For the largest mine in Sweden, the Kiirunavaara Mine, 36% of the energy for ventilation is used for preheating the air during the seven months when the temperature is below zero. The air quantities used for ventilation are large. In table 1 a comparison of the ratio between yearly produced ore and waste rock and installed fresh 'air capacity is shown. [ ]

In past years, water drainage control in coal mines has been primarily directed on the basis of water quantity rather than quality. Due to the recent intense interest in total ecology and environment, emphasis has shifted to the point where the water exiting from a mining operation may be of better quality than when it enters. In most operations this has meant the use of treatment methods (neutralization) while the technology for the prevention of acid drainage is being developed or refined. To date, underground abatement of acid formation has generally been less expensive but also less effective than surface treatment of the mine water. It seems probable that total mine water pollution control will have to include both underground abatement and surface treatment methods. The general acid producing reaction involving the oxidation of pyrite - 2FeS2 (pyrite) + 702 + 2H20 ? 2Fe2S04 + 2H2SO4 - is well known, even though the individual steps are not clearly understood. The major implication of this reaction, that acid production can be eliminated by not allowing the contact of pyrite with free oxygen or water, has been well substantiated both in the laboratory (1,2) and in practice. (3) Underground abatement or control processes can be generally classified into two types: (1) the effective control or elimination of acid causing reactions within the mine, and/or (2) the reduction or prevention of water flow into and out of the mine. Recognizing the fact that these two types may be directly inter-related, this paper will, for the purposes of clarity and simplification, discuss each separately.

"Flotation is regarded as the best available method of upgrading minerals and coal fines. However, its efficiency deteriorates rapidly with decreasing particle size. Further, ultrafine concentrates are difficult to be dewatered economically, forcing companies to discard part of the ultrafine materials to impoundments. To overcome these problems, a new method of separating and simultaneously dewatering ultrafine particles has been developed. Following extensive laboratory-scale test work, the process, known as hydrophobic-hydrophilic separation (HHS), has been tested successfully in continuous operations at proof-of-concept (POC)- and pilot-scale tests. The results show that the HHS process is capable of producing high quality clean coal with high recoveries and low moistures. INTRODUCTION Coal preparation plants are designed with up to four parallel processing circuits for treating coarse (> 12 mm), intermediate (12x1 mm) small (1x0.15 mm), and fine (<0.15 mm) particles. The plus 0.15 mm fractions can be effectively cleaned efficiently with gravity separation methods (Wills, 2006). At present, the only commercially viable option for cleaning the finest fraction is froth flotation (Yoon et al., 1999). In flotation, air is dispersed in the form of small air bubbles in a tank in which coal fines are suspended. The small air bubbles selectively collect the hydrophobic coal particles and float to the surface, forming a froth phase which overflows into a launder. As is well known, ultrafine coal particles of less than 30-50 µm are difficult to be collected by the air bubbles, resulting in low recoveries. Furthermore, fine particle flotation suffers from low carrying capacities and poor selectivity due to entrainment problems. (Bethell et al., 2005; Luttrell et al., 2014). In addition, the froth products containing ultrafine coal are difficult to dewater. Mechanical dewatering in general becomes inefficient with decreasing particle size due to small cake porosity and high surface area, resulting in high moistures (Hucko et al., 1988). The cost often becomes prohibitive with particles of smaller than ~45 µm (Bethell et al., 2005). Moreover, the high-moisture products are difficult to handle and incur high shipping costs and lower thermal efficiencies (Honaker et al., 2013)"

A powerful methane explosion in the mid-shaft pump station of a main service and ventilation shaft killed several persons on the station; more workers were killed when a mancage travelling down the shaft fell to the shaft bottom under a pile of broken concrete slabs from a brattice wall destroyed by the explosion venting into the shaft and a tangled mass of twisted steelwork from the equipped compartment. The newly-commissioned shaft serves a recent extension of an established mine on the Orange Free State (OFS) goldfield in South Africa. After outlining the circumstances in which the paper was written, and reviewing the nature and extent of the methane hazard in OFS mines, the paper describes the physical layout of the shaft and summarises evidence given by witnesses at the official inquiry concerning events prior to the explosion. No attempt is made to apportion blame for the incident.

A test to characterize the amount of gravity-recoverable gold (GRG) in an ore is described. Typical GRG results are given and possible uses are discussed. The overall database, which includes 68complete tests, is presented. The ore samples treated had an average GRG content of 63% of the total gold in the sample, with a standard deviation of 20% and a range of 3% to 97%. Both the F8(, of gold and the GRG content at a grind of 100% finer than 850 pm correlate well with the overall GRG content (at 80%finer than 75 pm). The primary use of the test is to determine whether gravity recovery should be used and how. Results can also be used to predict gravity recovery, as many of the ores tested are from plants employing gravity recovery. Gravity-circuit simulation can be used to refine recovery estimates or for optimization studies.

Metallurgists are trained to seek synergisms and to optimize trade-offs in the selection of processes and flowsheets. The subject of my paper and the focus of this entire conference is on synergisms involving more than just metallurgical recovery, but encompassing mining and environmental management too. Operators have always known that by recycling tailings water they could recover some cyanide and lime values or reduce the amount of new flotation reagent additions. The trade-offs have changed at many US mines today where concern about avian mortality necessitates that water in the tailings pond be detoxified. This is just one example of how selection of processes and technology today requires integration of environmental management. MUDDER & GOLDSTONE (1989) showed how cyanide can be recovered from tailings slurries by an acidification­volatilization-reabsorption (A VR) process which was installed in New Zealand, and which in 1992 is being commissioned also at Nerco DeLamar Silver Mine as described by OMOFOMA & HAMPDEN (1992). FRICKER (1990) and FRICKER & OWERS (1992) show how using A VR to recover cyanide from pregnant pulps ahead of gold recovery improves the yield of recoverable cyanide while improving the performance of the gold recovery step and detoxifying the tailings. This is an excellent example of the synergisms that can be achieved ,y applying a "systems approach."

The operation of an activated charcoal system has five separate unit operations. These unit operations have common points for CIP, CIL and CIS system, which vary widely in application. a. Absorption b. Desorption (Stripping) c. Acid Washing d. Reactivation e. Carbon Handling ( carbon transportation, sizing, de­watering, etc.) Cost optimization starts with the basic operating parameters (design philosophy) set down at the time of engineering design. This parameters undergo almost immediate change due to site specific ore requirements, throughput changes, operator requirements or reagent availability. Activated charcoal is sometimes viewed as simple, uncomplicated reagent that requires not optimization. To some extent, this statement is true, but under most circumstances, if the time necessary to optimize the use of activated charcoal is available, the effort is rewarded with significant savings. CPL-Carbon Link has embarked upon a program of supplying technical support with its activated charcoal. Several operation in the United States have under taken to have CPL-Carbon Link do an operational survey to determine if potential savings are possible. CPL-Carbon Link has offered to do these surveys for projects that are clients or simply would like to have CPL-Carbon Link review their operation. The information accumulated by CPL-Carbon Link is being used to attempt to fashion industry standards so that a common reference point came be establish for activated charcoal usage.

Chemical oxygen supplies have been used for nearly 60 years, with their greatest application during the last 25 years. They are of two types, the superoxides and chlorate "candles", The superoxides are demand chemicals, responding to the needs of the user and to supply oxygen and remove carbon dioxide. Chlorate candles are formed solid element which furnish oxygen only and do not remove carbon dioxide. Properties of these materials will be described, with comments on the respiratory requirements of a man under various workloads, types of equipment which use chemical oxygen, comparison with other systems and potential application to an underground mine survival system.

The use of high-resolution seismic surveys in coal exploration and mine development is becoming established as a standard technique in the industry. Their most significant contribution is in the effectiveness of reducing the number of core holes needed to understand the complex geological nature of coal by identifying geologic faults and mapping coal seam continuity and relative coal thickness. With these goals in mind, a high-resolution seismic survey was conducted in 1980 in the Wasatch Plateau coalfield of Utah. As a result of the success of this initial survey, numerous additional surveys have been performed over the past six years.. The interpretations of these subsequent surveys have led to the location of faults, fluvial channel sandstones, and coal thickness trends. This paper presents a review of high-resolution seismic technology as applied to coal exploration followed by three case histories, two of which illustrate the utility of the technique related to coal thickness determination and faulting and one that serves as an example of pitfalls in interpretation.

Various pyrometallurgical methods for treating ilmenite and zircon concentrates are reviewed. Laboratory experiments using a thermal plasma reactor were performed to evaluate the conversions of ilmenite to TiC or TiC-Fe and zircon to ZrC or ZrC-SiC. Results are examined and possible processing routes are identified.

The Bureau of Mines has investigated the fundamentals of the flocculation process. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of various physico-chemical parameters such as shear rate, polymer dosage, and polymer concentration on floc growth and to determine the applicability of a model in predicting polymer flocculation behavior. A rapid in-line particle size analyzer was used to follow the progress of both the floc growth and the breakage as a function of time. A genetic algorithm (GA) was used to determine the unknown parameters in the model and to fit a curve to the experimental data. Results show that the model, using GA as a tool to determine the unknown parameters, reproduces the experimental data with only reasonable accuracy and was relatively insensitive to the parameters. Results of the flocculation study showed that increases in polymer dosage had greater effect on the time required to reach the maximum floc size than on the floc size itself. It was also determined that, given all the aforementioned parameters, the degree of slurry mixing during the flocculation process had the greatest bearing on the floc growth.

A one-day seminar designed to help quarry and mining managers make their operations more productive, more efficient and less expensive was held in Harris- burg PA. "Rock-Solid Productivity" was sponsored by Pittsburgh Power & Light (PP&L). The seminar, one of a series sponsored by PP&L in 1997, proved to be well-organized and provided valuable information to the many quarry and mining professionals who attended. The information presented included a comparison of on-site diesel power vs. electric power, discussions of equipment improvements and topics on environmental management.

Modem mineral processing plants handle large amounts of ore and produce large tailing streams. Plant performance can be optimized when the water is quickly recovered with a thickener. The caisson thickener was developed to overcome process and mechanical problems with the conventional traction and center column units. The caisson is a hollow center column that serves as a pump house. The rake arm structure is supported by a hydrostatic bearing which sits on top of the caisson. The caisson thickener with a hydrostatic bearing has operated for many years in several mineral processing applications.
