This paper chronicles the mining of a main interceptor sewer through a residential neighborhood for the MWRA's Boston Harbor clean-up. The Wellesley Extension Sewer Tunnel consisted of 490 m (1600 ft) of rock tunnel, 107 m (35V ft) of mixed face and 336 m (1100 ft) of softground. The tunnel was located 4.6 m (15 ft) below water table and passed directly beneath six buildings with as little as 7 m (23 ft) of cover. In addition, the tunnel ran parallel to and within 4.6 m (15 ft) of an existing sewer tunnel with flows up to 187,5 million liters (50 million gal.) per day. The rock encountered by the tunnel was comprised of gramodiorite, amphibilite and diabase. The soils which passed through the tunnel face consisted of tills, sands and non-cohesive plastic silts. The techniques developed and the equipment utilized to successfully mine this complicated ground are described.

Use of computers for hoist evaluation and design dates back to the early 1960's. Mine hoist production calculations, repetitive in nature, were computerized first. More elaborate modeling of hoist operations followed soon. Typical for this, early period are the models described by Touwen (1973), and by Albert and McIvor (1984). Apart from the simple hoist production calculations, the models were very complex, typically written in Fortran, and often required advanced computing facilities and expertise to run the simulation. The early models were strictly deterministic, with no consideration given to the random nature of hoisting operations. The effects of randomness of the hoisting process on hoist performance were often accounted for by introduction of the deterministic factors, most notably of an "utilization factor" related to the hoist production. The value of the latter was based on observations of actual hoist performance, and could vary in a wide range. For example Harvey (1973) reports values of the "utilization factor" to be between 0.7 and 0.92.

Calaverite is a gold telluride species, with the composition, AuTe2. Calaverite is usually characterized by an exceedingly slow dissolution rate in a cyanide solution. Cyanidation of a slurry containing synthetic calaverite (P90 of 10 microns) was studied to determine the leaching kinetics and surface reactions. Alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, lead nitrate and sulphide minerals (pyrite and chalcopyrite) were among the parameters evaluated. The reaction products at the surface of calaverite were documented using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. High lime concentration with lead nitrate and injection of oxygen produced the fastest leaching rates. New gold leaching mechanisms were identified which appeared to be related to the parameters selected.

Part of Capital Improvement Project SE-754 tendered by New York City Department of Design and Construction included installation of a 96-in. (2.47 m)diameter sewer by pipe jacking methods. The pipe selected by the Contractor, EIC Associates, Newark, New Jersey, was a glass-fiber-reinforced thermosetting resin pipe installed in two reaches: 72 m (235-ft.) and 222 m (728-ft.). The machine selected for the excavation was an open face shield. This paper describes the set up of the tunneling operations, subsurface conditions, progress of excavation, pipe performance and other details of the project including unexpected difficult ground conditions that were encountered during excavation and how these conditions were overcome.

INTRODUCTION Shabanie mine, situated some 180 km east of Bula¬wayo, has been a producer of chrysotile asbestos for more than 50 years. The ore bodies occur in serpentinized dunite, which overlies talc-carbonate schist. A zone of relatively competent rock of varying thickness occurs between the schist and the ore bodies, which are gen¬erally less competent. The hanging wall of the ore bodies is economic, and the hanging-wall serpentine carries a variable subeconomic amount of fiber. It is important to note that, in general, the ore body competence is less than that of the foot and hanging-wall formations. Historical After surface operations ceased, cut-and-fill stoping was used to win ore from underground; this was success¬ful until the increasingly stoped-out area caused insta¬bility in the stope pillars and back. Consequently, dur¬ing the early 1950s, a gradual change to cave-mining methods was made, the ore being won by hand lashing in drawpoints, situated in the basement of the stope blocks, and passed through orepasses under gravity to the haulage level some 13 m below. About this time, interest was focused on the sub¬level caving method in use in Swedish iron ore mines: it was felt that it might be applied economically to the Shabanie ore bodies. Accordingly, in 1958, an experi¬mental stope block was laid out in which sublevel inter¬vals and extraction tunnel spacing were 9 m. The tun¬nels (ring drilling drives) were oriented on strike-in contrast to the Swedish system, in which crosscuts that retreat from hanging to footwall are used. The advantages of the method were quickly appre¬ciated by the operating personnel and, despite the in¬evitable teething troubles pertaining to the introduction of any new mining method, it was not long before sub¬level caving was providing a high proportion of the mill feed. The disadvantages also became apparent at an early stage, however, and, from that time to the present, continuing modifications have been made to mining lay¬outs in an effort to improve ore recovery. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF METHOD The mine is served by a vertical hoisting shaft, in which two skips, a man cage and a service cage, provide adequate capacity for production requirements. The rock hoist is a Ward Leonard control hoist, in which two electric motors drive a common gearbox. The man winder is driven by an a-c motor. Several auxiliary shafts provide secondary egress and intake and return ventilation. Main haulage levels are above (Fig. I a and b). Blasthole fan patterns are drilled by drifters of 100 mm bore, drilling 41-mm holes; when a sufficient strike length has been drilled, a slot is cut in the upper¬most sublevel and the rings are broken into the slot. Initially, a limited tonnage is drawn, since it is essential to ensure that the hanging wall caves behind the retreat¬ing stope face. Once this has been established, maxi¬mum tonnage can be drawn, as described later in this chapter, under the heading "Draw Control." The broken rock is loaded by 0.14 and 0.20-m3 load¬ers into cocopans (rocker-dumping type of tipping truck), which are hand trammed to orepasses, discharg¬ing on the haulage where 11-t electric trolley locomo¬tives haul 3.95-m3 Granby cars to the main shaft bins. As is evident from Fig. 1, the layout is simple, the block is brought rapidly into production, there is a high degree of selectivity and flexibility, and the result is a low-cost high-productivity mining method. DEVELOPMENT Main haulages are developed at 3.2 x 3.2 m, and once the service winze connections have been completed the development of the sublevels is undertaken. The footwall drives are cut first, to obtain access to the block. These ends are of the standard section, 2.4 x 2.8 m, and from them crosscuts at intervals of 70 m are driven through the ore body to the hanging wall. These crosscuts are used to supplement the geo¬logical information previously obtained from diamond core drilling, and they provide additional and more de¬tailed data on fiber percentages and lengths, structural features, and other relevant criteria which are used to build up the geological assessment of the area and to classify it in terms of the geomechanics rock classification (Laubscher and Taylor, 1977). The crosscuts also allow the necessary orepasses to be sited conveniently so that tramming distances from the loading points are not excessive. Development Drilling Once the skeleton development has been completed, the extraction headings are developed at 2.4 x 2.4 m as shown in Fig. 1. Standard development practice is to use crews of a machine operator and his helper, equipped with air-leg mounted jackhammers, to drill rounds of 1.8 m with integral tungsten carbide tipped drill steel. The Plant. The annual production of the Pyhasalmi mine is 900 000 tons of copper- zinc-pyrite ore containing approximately 0.7 % Cu, 2.5 % Zn and 30 % S. During 1976...1981 altered surface ore, 850 000 tons in all, was also treated at the concentrator. The surface ore was crushed and ground in a separate plant and was then fed into the copper or zinc flotation or was flotated in its own circuit, depending on the degree of alteration and the content of copper and zinc in the ore. The surface ore was exhausted in October 1981. Flotation comprises three consecutive flotation circuits; copper, zinc and pyrite circuit. The zinc circuit includes an open circuit roughing and scavenging. The scavenger concentrate and cleaner tailing are pumped to the middlings flotation. Rougher concentrates of the open circuit and the middlings flotation are pumped to cleaning which includes four stages. Figure 1 describes the flowsheet of the zinc circuit.

"Gravity concentration is still a challenging area in the mineral industry. This is mainly because of the fine size valuable mineral losses to the tailings during its application. But the recent developments in centrifugal separation methods and their mutual application with conventional separation techniques has increased mineral recoveries. In this paper, field application of conventional gravity separation methods with the combination of 2” diameter hydrocyclone cluster unit and a multi gravity separator (MGS) was discussed. Additionally, particle size distribution and chromite content of the plant streams is presented and initial laboratory test results were compared with the actual plant data throughout the paper. As expected, field data showed derivations from the laboratory tests but the combination of MGS and conventional gravity separation techniques resulted in gravity separation of -0.1 mm chromite particles. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this mineral processing plant project was to investigate the possibility of upgrading chromite ore from 12% to 48% Cr2O3 and having final tailings assay as 2% Cr2O3. For this reason, initially a set of laboratory gravity separation studies were conducted to evaluate the performance of combination of 2” diameter hydrocyclone cluster and multigravity separator. After obtaining successful results from the laboratory work, a feasibility study was initiated. Economical results of the feasibility study showed that an achievable high net present and return on investment values. Following the investment decision; engineering, equipment procurement, construction of the processing plant was completed in eighteen months. This paper focuses on the initial laboratory test work results, operational data of the 2” diameter hydrocyclones and MGS units; resulted chromite recoveries. Processed ore has the chromite associated with serpentine and olivine minerals. The chromite particles are generally in round shapes with sizes between 50 µm to 1600 µm and average size of 450 µm. The microscope images of the chromite and associated formations are presented on Figure 1.Chromite is formed in mixture with iron oxides, with varying amounts of magnesium, aluminum. The average chemical composition of the representative drill core samples of the ore deposit is given on Table 1."

"INTRODUCTION The recent drop in iron ore prices has claimed an unwitting casualty in vanadium. Vanadium is dominantly produced as a co-product of steel production. The recent shutdown at EVRAZ’s Mapochs steel-vanadium operations in South Africa has cut-off 10% of the world’s vanadium output. Earlier in February, 2015, Australia’s Atlantic Ltd. suspended operations at its Windimurra iron-vanadium complex after a fire caused severe damage at the plant. Since then, challenging market conditions has resulted in the permanent closure of this operation. This decoupling of vanadium production from integrated iron ore producers presents an opportunity for vanadium exploration companies to target single-product deposits. This trend is manifested in the increasing number of pure-play vanadium ventures around the world.The mine production of vanadium is dominated by three countries namely, China, South Africa and Russia, which collectively produce 98% of the world’s vanadium. While the use of vanadium as an alloy in the steel industry remains by far the largest application for this metal, growth in demand is expected to come from the renewable energy industry in the form of batteries for energy storage. This paper summarizes the current state of vanadium exploration, briefly describes the vanadium market and lists sources of future demand for the metal. TREND IN VANADIUM EXPLORATION The most active participants in the current vanadium exploration are pure-play vanadium ventures in Brazil, South Africa and Australia. These ventures are targeting deposits with higher vanadium grade than those typically mined in titaniferous magnetite operated by integrated steel-vanadium producers. The 10% shortfall in vanadium production resulting from the shutdown at EVRAZ’s Mapochs is expected to be partially compensated by Largo Resources’ Maracás Menchen vanadium operation located in the State of Bahia in Brazil, which commenced operation in August 2014 and is expected to reach design capacity of 11,400 tonnes of vanadium pentaoxide (V2O5) by the end of 2015. The estimated production1 for 2015 is 6,500 tonnes of V2O5 at a target production cost of $3.60/lb. This is the first vanadium operation to be placed in production in the Western Hemisphere in over 35 years."

Although most bauxite mined is used to make metallic alu¬minum, more than a million tons of bauxite is used annually in the United States in the manufacture of refractories, chemicals, abrasives, and cement. Raw material requirements are becoming increasingly difficult to meet because high-grade bauxite, required for some uses, is limited. The supply of raw material for high-alumina refractories is most critical because a low-iron bauxite is needed. Although there are substantial bauxite reserves in the world, bauxite suitable for use in refractories is limited to a few districts.

Volcanogenic base metal ores contain about 0.5 to 7 g/T Au, commonly as an intermetallic compound with Ag and/or Hg, and to a small extent • "invisible gold" in pyrite and arsenopyrite. The Au-bearing phase (electrum, Au-Ag-Hg alloy, etc.) generally occurs as fracture fillings in pyrite, arsenopyrite and chalcopyrite, and rarely • minute inclusions in pyrite and arsenopyrite. The Au-bearing phase in fractures generally occurs • small grains, and is frequently associated with galena, tetrahedrite and other late minerals. The gold is readily liberated from fractures and recovered by flotation in Ca concentrates. Copper concentrates usually recover around 60% of the gold when the ore grade is around 3 g/t. Higher recoveries are obtained for higher ore grades, and lower recoveries for lower grade ores. Lead and zinc circuits act as scavengers for gold, and recover all the exposed gold attached to small particles. Only unliberated gold, "invisible gold" and very minute gold grains attached to large particles are lost to tailings.

Magnesium is the eighth most abundant element in the earth's crust and the third most plentiful element in seawater. It is found in more than sixty minerals and in brines and seawater as a magnesium salt. One of the more important magnesium minerals is magnesium carbonate, MgCO3, with a theoretical maximum magnesia, MgO, content of 47.6%; this carbonate form represents the world's largest source of magnesia. The next most used sources for magnesia are magnesia-rich brines and seawater, where it occurs as magnesium sulfate and magnesium chloride. Other commercially important magnesium-bearing minerals are dolomite, CaMg(CO3)2, which serves the aggregate industry as well as the chemical industry; brucite, Mg(OH)2, which is used in the production of both caustic and sintered magnesia; olivine, ([MgFe]2-SiO2), which serves the refractory and heat storage industries; talc, (H2Mg3(SiO3)4), which serves several industries as a filler and as an ingredient in cosmetics; and serpentine, (H4Mg3SiO9). All these minerals are of commercial value because of the desirable characteristics given to them by magnesia and by its placement in the crystal structure. These minerals are the starting raw materials for a wide range of products. These include the production of magnesium metal, and several grades of magnesia used for the production of both sintered magnesia for refractory manufacture and lighter fired caustic magnesia, the latter is used in fluxes, fillers, insulation, cements, decolorants, fertilizers, chemicals, in the treatment of waste water including pH control, and in the removal of sulfur compounds from exhaust stacks. Magnesite is one of several major minerals possessing a dual character, i.e., non-metallic industrial mineral because of its principal end use as a calcined/dead burned raw material in non-metallic end products and magnesium metal. A large percentage of the magnesia used to produce magnesium metal comes from seawater1 brines. The total primary metal production worldwide is about 350 ktpy. This report reviews magnesite solely as an industrial non- metallic raw material. Magnesite for most refractory purposes must have a content of sintered magnesia above 85%, with a preference for those sources that have the potential for 90 to 98% magnesia values. Dolomite, used in large tonnages because of its physical properties in the construction industry, also has a use in the chemical and the refractory industry. In its calcined form, dolomite is used as a slag addition in the making of steel, and it is used in a high-purity calcine to precipitate magnesium hydroxide from brines or seawater. The precipitated magnesium hydroxide is intermediate for the production of deadburned clinker for refractories and the production of magnesium metal. In many cases the high-purity magnesium hydroxide obtained by precipitation with calcined dolomite, or in some cases limestone, has supplanted much of the world's production of magnesia from the natural mineral magnesite. This is especially true of the United States and in major industrialized areas of Europe and Japan. The best known of the minerals directly and widely exploited for its magnesia content is magnesite (MgCO3), one of the calcite group of rhombohedra1 carbonates, which includes calcite (CaCO3), siderite (Fe2CO3), and rhodocrosite (MnCO3), among others. The members of this group enter into a wide range of substitutional solid solutions when the positive ions have similar radii. The radii of magnesium and iron ions are within 6% of each other; hence magnesite and siderite form a complete series, of which the mineral breunnerite (ferroan magnesite) is a well known end member. The radii of calcium ion is 36% larger than that of magnesium ion and only limited substitution exists at each end of the MgC03-CaCO3 series. Dolomite is not a member of the calcite group, but it occurs when calcium and magnesium ions alternate in equal number in an ordered structure among carbonate ions. The result of this relationship is that calcite and dolomite are commonly found intermixed with magnesite. They occur, commonly, as identifiable crystal entities, which can be separated to a varying degree from the magnesite by benefication techniques. Magnesite, when pure, contains 47.8% MgO and 52.2% CO,. The pure mineral is found occasionally as transparent crystals resembling calcite. Magnesite principally contains variable amounts of the carbonates, oxides, and the silicates of iron, calcium, manganese, and aluminum. Although the genesis of natural magnesite deposits can be complex, it is distinguished in nature in two distinct physical forms, namely crystalline, (with a wide range of visible crystal sizes) and cryptocrystalline, sometimes referred to as amorphous, where the crystal size is not detectable to the eye and will range from 1 to 10 pm. The two types not only differ in crystal structure but in the sizes of the deposits and in modes of formations. The crystalline form has a Mohs hardness of 3.5 to 4.0. The color range is from white to black with shades of yellow, blue, red, or gray. The color is not a significant indicator of purity but in a given deposit an experienced person can often roughly grade the magnesite by observing color and crystallinity. Macrocrystalline deposits occur in relatively few, but generally large, deposits on the order of several million tons. The ore shows a marble-like crystal structure and belongs to the sedimentary or metasomatic groups of origin. The cryptocrystalline variety of magnesite frequently occurs in many small deposits, although there are exceptions. Cryptocrystalline magnesite is typically massive with no cleavage and is sometimes descriptively called bone magnesite. The fracture is usually conchoidal, with a hardness of 3.5 to 5.0. The color is mainly white, but it can have tints of yellow, orange, or buff. Accessory silaceous minerals such as serpentine, quartz, or chalcedony are usually present. Calcium minerals are normally absent or in low concentration, this contrasting with the macrocrystalline form where calcium minerals are almost invariably present and some- times in high concentration. A coal mine study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a compressed-air, foam spray system installed under a continuous miner boom and directed to cover the pan and the gathering arm. The study's objectives were to evaluate the foam, underboom sprays' effect on: • the respirable dust concentration in the ambient air, and • the quartz concentration in the airborne, respirable dust. The foam generation and delivery system's engineering design is described in the paper, followed by descriptions of the mine and the dust sampling strategy. The data were analyzed to study the foam's effects on respirable dust and quartz concentrations at the continuous miner cab, the face return and the intake. The data indicate reductions in the dust's quartz content, ranging from 19.7% to 64.6%, in eight of 11 comparisons of the foam vs. no foam cuts. In addition, airborne intake dust reductions were observed in eight of 11 comparisons.

In 1993, the United States' economy grew at a rate of about 3%. The Gross Domestic Product rose to $6.4 trillion. With more than 258 million people - 599,000 in mining including petroleum - the United States has more than 100 million dwelling units and more than 190 million licensed motor vehicles. New private housing starts rose 7% to 1.3 million units, new car production fell 3% to 5.5 million units and truck and bus production rose 21 % to 4.9 million units. The rate of inflation was under 3% and the prime rate of interest 6%. The Producer Price Index (1982 = 100) was unchanged from 1992 for fuels and re¬lated products and power at 80 and met¬als and metal products at 119, while chemicals and allied products rose 2% to 128 and non-metallic mineral prod¬ucts rose 2% to 120. The merchandise trade deficit rose 27% to $116 billion.

A mathematical model describing the concentration profile of fine particles in the axial direction in liquid fluidized beds has been developed for the removal of fine particles. A forward finite differentiation technique has been used to solve a continuity equation with a source term to predict the concentration profile and, hence the recovery as a function of time. With the aid of experimental results obtained using a fluidized bed of 3-cm diam, dimensionless parameters were identified. These parameters were used to predict the concentration profile of fine particles in fluidized beds of larger sizes. Four different sizes of fluidized beds, namely, 1.3, 3.0, 4.0, and 7.5 cm in diam, were used in this investigation. The amounts of bed particles used included 4, 8, 16, 24, 59, and 120 g, and the size of bed particles were 48x100, 100x150 and 150x200 mesh.

The Coteau Properties Co.'s Freedom Mine is a surface lignite mine that uses large draglines, trucks and shovels, tractor-scrapers and bulldozers to uncover a single coal seam. In 1989, a work order system was instituted to record data by equipment type, cost, productivity and distance. The system was also used to provide historical information to plan the most efficient and economic use of each equipment type in the mining operation. The Coteau Properties Co. is a wholly owned subsidiary of The North American Coal Corp. The company was formed in 1972 to supply lignite from its Beulah-Hazen coal reserve to a coal gasification project and an electrical generating facility located near Beulah, ND. The reserve consists of a single coal seam between 3 and 7 m (10 to 23 ft) thick. The overburden above the coal is predominately glacial tills and clays and ranges from 6 m (20 ft) to more than 60 m (200 ft) thick.

The mining sector, which is important in terms of raw-material and energy supply, is seen as a sector with high number of fatal accidents compared to other sectors. In this century of heightened occupational health and safety awareness, it is important to review past accident statistics and analyze current deficiencies using the information in inventory. Although there are many studies assessing occupational accidents occurring in the mining sector, there are few studies using the nonparametric linear programming method. There are many input and output parameters related to occupational health and safety. Nonparametric linear programming method has been found to be useful because it provides simultaneous evaluation of these input-output parameters, does not require functional form in the analyses and provides guidance on the improvement needed by the related parameter. However, this method analyzes data using a single period of time and does not take into account any changes in efficiency over time. In the literature, there is no study in which the change of occupational accidents occurring in mining and even other sectors over time is examined and the Malmquist total factor productivity index (MPI) is used. Within the scope of the present study, the aim was to examine the change of occupational accidents occurring in Western Lignite Corp. in Turkey, where underground and surface production methods are applied, between 2005 and 2018. It is the first time MPI is used to examine the change of occupational accidents over time. The DEAP 2.1 computer program written by Coelli [1] was used in the solution of the models [2].

Hydrodynamic investigations in exploratory boreholes and grouting holes are conducted for the purpose of obtain¬ing information about the hydraulic properties of the hydrostratigraphic section to be intersected by the proposed underground workings. The information obtained from the investigations provides the basis for calculating the hydrau¬lic coefficients of fractured permeable rock, the dimensions of the anticipated grout isolation curtain(s) around the un¬derground workings, the number and location of grouting holes, the injection pressure modes, and also the volume(s) of grout that will be required (Anon., 1976, 1978). The following data on each aquifer are obtained from the investigations conducted in monitoring and grouting bore¬holes and the analysis of the results: 1) the top of each hydrostratigraphic unit, 2) the thickness of each unit, 3) the ground water fluid potential distribution in each unit, 4) the coefficient of permeability, 5) the piezoconductivity, 6) the fracture porosity, 7) the geometry of the fractures in the rock, 8) the elasticity-compressibility coefficient of the fractured rock, 9) the chemical composition of the ground water, 10) the direction of flow of the ground water, and 11) the expected inflow rate of water into the shaft, drift or tunnel. STG uses its DAU-3M type flowmeter to conduct in¬vestigations of directions of flow in vertical, inclined and horizontal drillholes. The DAU-6 instrument is used to de¬termine the direction of flow of ground water in each frac¬ture or fractured aquifer. Various singular and double DAU type packers are used for pumping and for injection studies (tests) and for flowmeter investigations. Normally the instruments enumerated above permit in¬vestigations to be conducted in each separate aquifer with¬out reinforcing the holes with casings. On the basis of these investigative data, both the hydraulic properties of unfractured rock and the hydraulic properties of the fractured rock are estimated. Dual porosity rocks require special attention because they tend to segregate the grout. 3.1 FLOWMETER INVESTIGATIONS IN BOREHOLES The STG flowmetric methodology is based on the mea¬surement of the ground water flow rate through the borehole by hydrostratigraphic interval after the disturbance of the hydrostatic equilibrium in the "hole-aquifer system" (after pumping or injecting). The relationship of the head changes to the discharge into or from a particular hydrostratigraphic unit obtained during the tests serve as the basis for calcu¬lating the hydraulic properties. Flowmetric investigations facilitate the determination of the number of aquifers, their depths, their thickness, the hydraulic properties of the fractured rock and the magnitude and direction of the flow of ground water. 3.1.1 FLOWMETER HARDWARE STG conducts flowmetric investigations in boreholes using its DAU-3M-108, DAU-3M-73, DAU-3M-57 and DAU-3M-44 instruments.' They have respective external diameters of 108, 73, 57 and 44 mm. The type of flowmeter selected for use depends on the borehole geometry and the technological scheme for carrying out the investigations. Boreholes with a drilling diameter of 76-93 mm are inves¬tigated with the DAU-3M-73 flowmeter; boreholes drilled by bits with a diameter of 112 mm and more are investi¬gated using the DAU-3M-108 flowmeter. The DAU-3M¬108 and DAU-3M-57 instruments are used for flowmetric investigations with a packer. 3.1.1.1 The Downhole Sensor The sensor design of the DAU-3M-73 hole flowmeter is shown in Fig. 2. The design of the DAU-3M-108 instru¬ment is similar to the design of the DAU-3M-73 instrument. The frame of the flowmeter sensor shown in Fig. 2 consists of a casing, an upper and lower centering mount and two rings to which the guiding rods are attached. The upper rods are built into the connector bushing; the lower rods are built into the coupling sleeve. The borehole cable is attached using a half-coupling, a packing ring and a constriction nut. Thus, the frame of the flowmeter sensor is made so that the free passage of water to the impeller is facilitated along with the necessary rigidity. The primary moving component of the flowmeter is the double-bladed impeller, which rotates on cobalt-tungsten pivots and agate thrust bearings. Special extended air cham¬bers protect the supports of the impeller from the action of the borehole fluid which may contain fibrous and abrasive particles. The air located in the chambers shields the sup¬ports from direct contact with the borehole fluid when the sensor operates in a borehole. Designers, engineers, and contractors are using three-dimensional seismic tomography for geotechnical site investigations and during tunnel excavation for hard rock and soft ground applications. Utilizing multiple types of seismic signals produced by a TBM, drill, or impact breaker, the reflection of different velocity features are processed into a holographic image of the actual structure to be encountered. The Mill Creek Phase 3 alignment in Cleveland, Ohio, was imaged to define existing conditions along a 1,200-ft section of a proposed 6.1-m (20-ft) diameter CSO tunnel and, specifically, a zone of expected anomalous conditions where drilling was inconclusive. In Japan, Kajima Corporation used TRT™ to image a number of tunnels including the Fujikawa and Kanaya tunnels in a combination of methods to map structural features along the alignment.

In this paper the main subsidence- ground-structure interactions and an overview of the response of surface structures to subsidence ground movements are presented. The purpose of the paper is to augment our understanding for more effective application of available data as well as to highlight the essential site conditions in building response. The data presented general1 y applies to houses to structures up to 2-3 stories high and no more than several hundred feet in length. Superstructures of these buildings are supported by exterior (wood-frame or masonry) bearing walls with the interior floor loads carried by essentially one row of interior columns. This paper is not directed towards the response of tall buildings, steel-framed structures, or building types commonly associated with schools, churches, libraries, etc.
