Explosion-resistant seals in underground coal mines isolate the environment within the sealed area from the active workings of the mine. The current United States Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) requires these seals to be constructed of solid concrete blocks. The CFR also allows for alternative methods or materials to be used to create a seal if they can withstand a static horizontal pressure of 138 kpa (20 psi), provided the method of installation and the material used is approved in the ventilation plan. The purpose of this report is to identify those explosion- resistant seals that have been tested and meet or exceed all the requirements of the CFR.

Stanford University operates the National Research Facility which is located at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) in Menlo Park, California. In order to improve and allow for enhanced experiments, the current facilities required expansion. A1500 foot long tunnel (20 ft wide by 21 ft high) and a 220 foot long underground cavern (49 ft wide by 32 ft high) were excavated through the Ladera Sandstone formation which is an intermediate geo-material with week rock properties. The overburden between surface and crown of the structures varies from 10 to 80 feet. The underground structures were excavated according to the principles of the NATM (New Austrian Tunnel Method). This paper addresses the challenges that were encountered during the construction phase of the project and how construction issues were resolved mutually by the owner, engineer and contractor. The implementation of geotechnical instrumentation, recorded data and interpretations, soil conditions and behavior encountered during construction are also presented.

Coal production in the United States reached a record level in 2005, ending the year at 1.03 Gt (1,133.3 million st) according to preliminary data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (Table 1). Production in 2005 was 19.2 Mt (21.2 million st) higher than the 2004 level of 1 Gt (1,112.1 million st) and surpassed the prior record set in 2001 by 5.1 Mt (5.6 million st). Although total U.S. coal consumption rose in 2005, not all coal-consuming sectors had increased consumption for the year. Coal consumption increased in the electric power sector by 2.2 percent and declined in the other industrial sector, while coking coal consumption decreased slightly.

Introduction In preparing this paper considerable time was spent attempting to find some upbeat data about the mining industry, so those of us in the field could feel somewhat better about future prospects. Much to my regret, I failed to uncover substantial evidence that our near-term or, for that matter, our long-term opportunities appear all that bright in North America. That is certainly not the kind of assessment anyone likes to hear or accept as even a possibility. Those remarks may, on the surface, appear far too pessimistic. This industry will experience a recovery and most likely will see conditions begin to improve later this year or early next. The kind and degree of recovery, however, will more than likely differ from those experienced in the past. Fundamental Changes Clearly, the fundamentals on a world scale of our business have undergone important changes. In recognizing these fundamental changes, mining authorities believe productivity advances are needed to change the direction mining has taken in recent years. The really tough question is whether increases in productivity will be enough to change the course of events that has dominated the mining sector for the past decade. Before one can provide an honest answer, an appraisal of what has and is happening now is necessary. Here are some changes and events that have taken place that effect domestic mining and will probably continue: • Mineral-rich lesser developed countries (LDCs) in Africa, South America, and Asia-Pacific have reached a point where they have developed the needed mining infrastructure to not only produce at a high rate, but in many instances, at a lower cost than fully developed countries. Just as importantly, these countries, even if they do not enjoy lower costs, will produce for world export with government subsidies because min¬ing products are key in obtaining badly needed foreign exchange. • These producing countries also have the distance advantage of lower labor, environmental, and other important regulatory costs. If that were not enough, these same countries have minerals with considerably higher grade ore and, in some cases, much lower cost accessibility. • Exporting North American commodities is impaired by a dollar that continues to strengthen against other important currencies around the world. There are other impediments to overcome, but these represent some of the realities our industry faces. Can those obstacles be overcome through improving productivity? In the past, this industry has offset the impact of these events to a sizeable degree through innovations of mining techniques, equipment and processes, and by increasing the size of its individual operations to reduce costs. Will further enhancements along these lines be enough to alter this changing balance in the future? While there is no answer, it is apparent that if we do not mount a full-scale assault in some key areas, our prospects will not be encouraging. Productivity improvements throughout the entire chain of the mining industry most certainly rates as a high priority. Every link in that chain from mine planning, equipment selections, and transportation considerations needs to be examined and reexamined to assure the lowest effective cost is developed. Quality, while oftentimes costing a little more initially, is still the most cost effective purchasing decision to make. Tailings disposal is a significant consideration for the mining industry, with the majority of the ore processed in most mining operations ending up as tailings. Several tailings dam failure accidents have occurred during the past few years and mine tailings dam failures are occurring at relatively high rates. Tailings dam failure is disastrous with the serious damage and the loss of lives. To increase the tailings dam safety, a tailings dam monitoring and pre-alarm system (TDMPAS) based on the internet of things and cloud computing platform has been accomplished with the abilities of real-time monitoring of the saturated line, impounded water level, rain fall and the dam deformations etc. The TDMPAS has been applied in several mines in China and helped the mine engineers monitor the tailings dam safety and get warning information automatically and remotely in any kind of weather conditions. This work has been demonstrated the tailings dam monitoring and pre-alarm system (TDMPAS) is meaningful to monitor the tailings dam physical safety condition. The TDMPAS could be applied to monitor all the national tailings dams online in the future.

These preceding factors, coupled with the in-house retention of a core project group that fully understands the breadth of skills and abilities needed to undertake development of multiple large projects successfully, have been the cornerstone of Cyprus Amax’s project development success.

Mineralogical analyses of carbonates in depyritized tailings and pyrite concentrate (from depyritization of the tailings) were completed as part of the tailings characterization for the Crandon Project, a massive sulfide deposit in northeastern Wisconsin. The mineralogical study was designed to determine the proportion of calcium and magnesium carbonates, and therefore the effective buffering capacity of carbonates in the tailings. The depyritized tailings are net acid consuming and will be stored in a surface tailings management area. The pyrite concentrate is net acid generating and will be used as backfill in the underground mine workings. The majority of carbonates in the depyritized tailings were ferroan dolomite containing 10 to 15% iron (by weight) and lesser amounts of siderite and magnesian siderite. The proportion of calcium and magnesium-rich carbonates corresponds to several independent tests of carbonate neutralization potential (CO3-NP) availability. The pyrite concentrate had less CO3-NP, indicating segregation of the carbonates during pyrite flotation. These carbonates reported higher iron contents, consistent with the relatively lower availability of CO3-NP in the pyrite concentrate.

As a preventive action, the geotechnical department at the mine analyzed the original topography overlying a conveyor tunnel at the mine. Several dewatering drains were installed to intercept water collecting from an old lakebed. Subsequently, 20 steel arches were installed to provide additional support in an area of tunnel where original geological mapping indicated Type IV rock. This project was completed ontime with no loss to production. Construction schedules had to be developed to half hour precision, to accommodate the installation.

A 220-meter (m) segment of the Henderson/ ML King Combined Sewer Overflow(CSO) consists of two 1.8-meter-inside diameter (I.D.) pipe-jacked tunnels that pass beneath Interstate-5 and the BNSF and UPRR railroads. A seismic tomography survey was conducted to develop a 3-dimensional profile of the tunnel zone and better define potential obstructions. The tomography was conducted through three 11 cm high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes installed in a triangular pattern around the future tunnel alignments using horizontal directional drilling methods. The pipe-jacked tunnels have been successfully completed, thus permitting a comparison between the predicted obstructions and those actually encountered. The top HDPE tomography pipe was also used to monitor settlements with an experimental horizontal profiler above the advancing tunnels during construction and located two areas of ground loss beneath I-5 that were subsequently grouted.

INTRODUCTION The high speed rail link between Madrid and Asturias, in the North of Spain, has encountered in the Cantabrian range the biggest challenge of the whole line, a very deep tunnel, 25 km long through a foreseen difficult geology. This tunnel was divided in the following four lots for construction: ¦Lot 1: Pola de Gordón- Folledo. L=10,7 km ¦Lot 2: Folledo-Viadangos. L=4,166 m ¦Lot 3: Viadangos- Los Pontones. East tube. L=10,4 km ¦Lot 4: Viadangos- Los Pontones. West tube. L=10,4 km. Dragados S.A. leading a JV was contracted to design and built the Lot 2 on the captioned Pajares High Speed Railway Tunnel. The Lot 2, comprising the middle third section of the 25 km long tunnel has an additional challenge: the construction of one access from the surface to allow it own construction. Feasibility reports and preliminary design do not foresee the use of TBM due to the risk of squeezing ground at the deepest area of the tunnel. On the other hand, conventional NATM excavation of the twin tunnels and ancillary works, including access shafts were against the expected construction schedule by the client, due to the poor ground foresee at the early stage.

Selection of tunneling method, specially the use of shielded machines for application in deep rock tunnels can be heavily impacted by presence of ground convergence and squeezing conditions. Tunnel convergence is a function of ground conditions (i.e., rock mass behavior, groundwater, in-situ stresses), size of the opening, and TBM operational parameters. The case study of Ghomroud water conveyance tunnel project in Central Iran, which is under construction using a double shield TBM, is used to examine the effect of rock parameters on tunnel convergence and hence on the need for over excavation and shield lubrication to avoid problems with the shield getting stuck. Although it is impractical to perform a continuous assessment of rock mass conditions within the shield or in the lined tunnel, results of field observations and subsequent studies show that the amount of the tunnel convergence has direct correlation with the percentage of fines and large rock fragments in the muck and TBM thrust/torque/ROP. These relationships have been examined and will be presented in this paper.

A series of flotation experiments were carried out in a 2.25-dm3 laboratory-scale Rushton turbine cell using hydrophobic quartz particles. Flotation was performed at a constant mean bubble diameter over a range of superficial gas velocities and impeller rotational speeds. The overall flotation rate constant increased linearly with increasing superficial gas velocity (and hence bubble surface area flux). The rate constant also increased linearly with increasing energy dissipation, until a maximum value was reached. A further increase in energy dissipation had little effect on the rate constant. The dependency of the rate constant on energy dissipation is a reflection of the size range and hydrophobicity of the particles used in this study. The flotation rate constant increased with increasing particle size, except at the highest energy dissipation value examined, for which the flotation rate of the larger particles reached a plateau and, in some cases, decreased. Good agreement was obtained between the experimental results and those predicted by a fundamental flotation model using experimentally measured values for mean energy dissipation and the Sauter mean bubble diameter. The bubble velocity was adjusted to obtain the best fit to the experimental data. The inferred bubble velocity, based on the flotation model, was found to increase with increasing superficial gas velocity (and bubble surface area flux) and was found to decrease with increasing impeller rotational speed. While the inferred bubble velocities were significantly lower than experimentally measured bubble velocities, and, except at low superficial gas velocity values, significantly higher than the bubble swarm velocity calculated from gas holdup measurements, similar trends with impeller rotational speed and superficial gas velocity were observed in all cases.

The elimination of the incidence of silicosis in employees in industries such as mining and pottery is an ongoing international initiative. After many decades of industrial activity in these industries and many dollars spent on preventative measures, silicosis is still occurring. The exposure-prevention measures taken so far have certainly improved the working environment dust concentrations; however, the illness is still regularly diagnosed in workers. More funding is needed for interventions to improve working conditions. Many aspects of dust prevention and suppression will be researched and exposure assessment methodologies and equipment will need to be reviewed for the purposes of improvements in effectiveness. This paper presents results from laboratory tests carried out on gravimetric sampling pumps and cyclones. It highlights the erratic flow produced by gravimetric pumps of three different manufacturers who claim their respective pumps are equipped with flow stabilisers. The standard BS EN 1232:1997 is used as a basis for the tests. A method, albeit impractical for fieldwork, is shown for the elimination of the pulsation in the flow. This method serves to prove the method and protocol used in this study. The pressure loss caused air-flow resistance of cyclones is measured. The air inlet aperture size of cyclones is measured. The large discrepancy in the two criteria between individual cyclones is shown. The paper concludes that all the pumps tested failed the prescribed limits of BS EN 1232:1997 regarding the pulsation of the gravimetric sampling flow. The difference in flow characteristics of the cyclones, together with the erratic flow produced by the pumps, throws into question the accuracy of the exposure assessments. It is suggested that substantial resources be channelled towards solving these flow problems in parallel with measures taken to reduce exposure. In principle, the accurate assessment of exposure and dust concentration levels is a prerequisite for effective management of the problem of silicosis.

Although many SAG operators may agree that on-line measurement of SAG feed-size is an attractive notion, applying this information in a control strategy that recovers the investment, engineering time, and maintenance is not necessarily straightforward. The P. T. Freeport Split-Online system was justified based on the assumption that SAG feed-size could be used in a feed-forward control strategy either at the regulatory or expert system control level. Something like “as the feed size changes adjust the throughput to avoid under or overloading the mill” was envisioned. However, following installation and calibration, Cluster Analysis showed that such an approach would not be successful. However, the sensor has been successfully integrated into Freeport’s grinding control strategy other ways. It provides an input to the Kalman filter parameter estimator used in a model-based control strategy that optimizes throughput and grind. The Split sensor also provides a characteristic feed size parameter for use in an on-line work index estimator. This paper describes the calibration and installation of the Split SAG feed-size analyzer, and reviews the evolution of its use in the Freeport C3 grinding circuit control strategy.

Rhenish lignite will continue to play an indispensible role in the energy mix of the German Federal Republic for a long time to come. The use of lignite for electricity generation, upgrading and, if necessary, as a raw material is geared to the long term. The holistic management of opencast mines underpinned by approval law in the long term and a stronger focus on man, the environment and nature contribute to the acceptance of the mines by the local population. The same is true of state-of-the-art lignite uses: as regards their operational flexibility, lignite-fired power plants are ideal partners for the expansion of renewables. It is along these lines that RWE is continuing its power plant renewal programme as planned. With a view to that which will be conceivable the day after tomorrow, RWE is researching future technologies today in order to meet objectives such as security of supply, profitability and environmental compatibility to the same extent in the long term. Another important contribution to acceptance is public transparency and communications as means to support approval procedures and the implementation of measures in all areas related to lignite mining and utilization.

Following the Sago Mine accident, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) asked the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center to study several possible methane explosion scenarios in the Sago coal mine. The study used a 1-ft resolution map of the mine to produce a 3-dimensional (3-D) model of a portion of the mine, including the sealed area where the explosion occurred. An advanced 3-D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code was used to calculate the explosion pressures within the sealed area, on the mine seals, and in nearby regions of the mine. Based on the best available information on methane concentrations and assumptions on homogeneity and on layering and mix composition, three separate initial conditions of methane-air concentrations and location were studied. This paper discusses the CFD modeling technique, the results of the calculations, the challenges of conducting this type of modeling, and the advantages and limitations of CFD modeling of accident investigations of mine explosions.

This paper presents a review of several models of roadheaders being used in today?s tunnel projects. The features of different models of roadheaders are presented and compared. Roadheader size and cutter power generally determine which roadheader is best for a particular job. We will also present a model for matching features of the roadheader to the anticipated ground conditions such that the most efficient machine is selected for the project.

The global bentonite industry is a dynamic market balancing a range of end uses with an ever growing number of bentonite producers. In addition, markets in developed countries are elevating the level of detail and transparency for materials reporting in programs, such as the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and restrictions of Chemicals (REACH) program in the European Union. Bentonite is impacted by programs of this nature. The majority of the bentonite products sold around the world are sodium bentonites. These sodium bentonites consist either of natural sodium bentonites, or naturally occurring bentonite dominated by divalent interlayer cations (Ca+2 andMg+2) subsequently exchanged with sodium cation. The latter variety is often called “sodium-activated“, or “soda-ash treated” bentonite. Once exchanged with sodium, these bentonites are often difficult to distinguish from natural sodium bentonites using common commercial testing protocols. Due to their similar colloidal and bulk chemical properties; the lack of test procedures designed specifically to identify this product feature; and the failure to completely or effectively explain their differences, sodium-activated bentonite is often considered to be identical to natural sodium bentonite in the industry. This article defines both general types of sodium bentonite and presents a technique that could serve the industry as a tool to confirm the variety of sodium bentonite in question. Specifically, geochemical properties such as carbon (C13/C12) and oxygen (O18/O16) isotopic ratios can distinguish activated, even slightly activated bentonites, from bentonites not introduced to additional sodium during manufacture.

This paper evaluates the effect of longwall mining on a cluster of unconventional shale gas wells located in a district barrier pillar between a current longwall panel and the future panel north of the barrier pillar. A cluster of 19 unconventional shale gas wells have been drilled and 5 additional gas wells have been proposed in the barrier pillar. The closest gas well is 25.6 m (84 ft) to the current panel tailgate and 26.2 m (86 ft) to the tailgate of the future panel north of the barrier pillar. The rib-to-rib width of the barrier pillar is 57.9 m (190 ft). The distance between the two gas wells across the barrier pillar is 6.1 m (20 ft). The pillars in the current tailgate are on 22.9-m (75-ft) and 32.0-m (105-ft) centers, and the pillars in the tailgate of the panel north of the barrier will be on 22.9-m (75- ft) and 36.6-m (120-ft) centers. The two longwall panels adjacent to the barrier pillar are 475.5-m (1,560-ft) wide. The overburden depth at the shale gas well site is 321.6 m (1,055 ft). When the price of gold cracked the US$9.60/g(US$300/oz) mark last year, the gold-mining industry began to crank up again. This followed several years of gold prices that had languished in the mid-200s. Existing mines increased production and mines that had lain dormant for many years were getting second looks. The United States still produces a large amount of gold. But not much of the new production is coming from that country. Instead, strict environmental regulations still have companies wary of trying to invest the millions needed to start a new mine or expand existing ones. And after years of studies and negotiations between legislators, environmental interests and the mining industry, the United States still has not crafted a new mining law.
